A couple years back me and @audrey_snyder took a deep dive into New York City’s waste export complex. We jumped off from @freshkillspark Field R/D Residency to connect the dots between landfills, incinerators, parks, and prisons that contain and metabolize the spread of NYCs waste all around the US. I wrote about our project “Wastestreaming” for @archleague ⠀ which you can now check out via the link-in-bio thing. Here’s a bit about the project from the editors at #urbomnibus below:⠀ ⠀ “New York City’s infamous Fresh Kills landfill stopped receiving garbage 18 years ago, and an enormous public park is slowly rising in its place — a process we’ve been documenting on Urban Omnibus. But against the backdrop of the site’s return to leisure and nature, where does all the garbage go? A steady stream of waste — commercial and domestic — flows out of the city every day. Researchers have tracked the movement of trash across the US, revealing just how many miles it can travel, but we know less about the sites our discards shape along the way, and the places where they are finally buried or burned. Artists Joe Riley and Audrey Snyder asked what kind of landscapes grow in Fresh Kills’ shadow. As part of the park’s Field R/D program, they identified almost 100 sites through which New York City’s municipal solid waste moves, from local transfer stations to rural parks and prisons far beyond city limits. I still have goosebumps and a grin from superb surprise hangs with @jo.nesr in Marfa, TX. It’s been ten or twelve years with an ocean in between since we last knew one another—as teenagers—but Rachel recognized me like it was yesterday and went on to make all of 48 hours I spent there the most special. R is currently killing the game as an artist in residence at @chinatifoundation and graciously put me up while also putting up with all the various Jonald Dudd-isms I couldn’t help but come up with. Me & @audrey_snyder ’s project ‘Into the ground’ is now into LA thanks to an exchange of art works and ideas between @clockshopla and @socratespark. The work will be parked at #TheBowtieProject through the end of September, 2019. For the installation at the Bowtie, we proposed to adapt the sculpture from its NYC origins to respond more specifically to this new/old site’s history, needs, and causes for use.⁣ ⁣ We removed the rust-dyed cover from the car and used the material to re-upholster seats that we welded into the steel frame. So the cover of the car is peeled back, and pulled into the interior. From the inside out, the seats are meant to be an open invitation for pause or rest near the center of the Bowtie. For us this geographic center is not a static location. The center is a concept often determined by very particular sets of reasons or desires. Centers change as people move around, such that a place may have multiple centers. As visitors here, Los Angeles feels like a place where the centers at any given moment are determined by automobiles. ⁣ ⁣ With that in mind, we hope this work re-centers the peripheral vision of a site like the Bowtie. Y’all. I’m doing it. I am accepting an offer of admission to the Art History & Art Practice PhD program at UC San Diego. Going off to study with the incredible faculty and students at UCSD Visual Arts and maybe end up somewhere down the line with a doctorate and a practice-based dissertation. I am truly honored and stoked.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ This has felt like an enormous decision to make, and one I struggled with for too many reasons to say here, but I do know for sure that more than a few MFA/MA/MS admit spots opened up to folks on waitlists this past week. Many of those offers were for me incredibly difficult to turn down. All of them were only possible from the enormous support I’ve had from friends, family, and teachers. Thank you all.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ After landing on a decision the other day, I flipped a coin just to make sure. I sent a photo of that coin toss to my partner in love and crime and all things @audrey_snyder and she echoed: “HEADS HEAD WEST”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ And so we go. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Thinking of love and family New York is going to be a hella hard home to leave, even for just a little while. This is not goodbye! And besides I’m told that once you leave NYC you become a New Yorker everywhere else. I’ve got some months/weeks here yet.
