Racism in the whump community

I'm a tired black woman and I wanna talk about the kind of racism i see in the whump community. This isnt a callout, but a discussion and its an invite for white people to listen not talk over me.

Whump is when characters get hurt, this can be from fandom or with original characters, so I'll go into each of these starting with fandom.

Fandom racism is well documented, white people will actively ignore or hate on people of colour, especially black women, both the characters and the actors. Black, Latino and Asian characters are consistently hated or ignored, especially in whump. As someone who runs a poc whump blog, I have to make gifs (as someone who doesnt have the talent or energy to do that) for franchises like the fucking MCU, where characters like Sam Wilson or T'Challa, who have massive fanbases outside of tumblr/whumpblr, but here theyre irrelevant. Black stories and pain are irrelevant in whump.

Been in servers where people will talk about a whumpee by showing pictures of a group of people, no one has to mention theyre talking about the white man in the group, we all know ofc whumpees are white men. The poc in the shot are the background, even if theyre the main characters, to a white person eyes, they arent relevant, arent important.

And OC content isnt free from this either. Instead of ignoring people of colour, we are simply not present. And whump is derived from fandom so its clear that these are linked. You dont like it when we're there, and make worlds where we are not. And it's not about intention, maybe youre just worried about writing poc, maybe we just dont come to your mind at all. But the effect, the consequence, is more important on poc in the community than any of that.

And when you do write us, you feminise and fetishise asian men, you make black men hypermasculine or subject them to poilce brutality. You make black women the sassy best friend type, the black mama to serve white people. We're never the centre of the story.

And whiteness is glorified. In its pale innocence, in the beauty of blue eyes or brown hair. The whumpee was made to be white and for white people to project themselves on. Not for poc. This wasn't made for us.

Something that is so innocent, so obvious to a white person can be harmful to a person of colour and the problem isnt an individual, its a structure. Fandoms are structurally white, the whump community is structurally white. Places white people go to turn their brain off, to "escape" always mean that its a space where poc cant escape. Because you let the racism that is in you not get addressed, and where no one is addressing racism, it flourishes.

ive never donated to ao3 but just curious why is it bad? this is the first im hearing of this and i want to be educated lol

1) they don't need it.

2) a lot of people actually do need it.

3) they host a bunch of wack shit (actual c/p, r/pe fics, racist fics etc etc) and have bs excuses about why it's being kept up. people also defend this. and it's like. up. still.

what's been particularly vile to me is this group of white online leftists who insist that anyone who cares about more than this one issue for the election is a bad person, like, as if us black and brown people are making up reasons to be afraid and not.....believing the gop when they say they are coming for us. believing trump who has said previously that he does not bluff, that he will do the things he's said he will do (i hate what social media has gone to the word gaslighting but it feels like gaslighting. we lived through four years of trump. we saw the damage. stop treating us like we're being dramatic). it must be great to not have to worry about that i guess? The thing about (the often-white) Online Leftists is that they have become just as much as a radicalized death cult as the diehard Trumpists. If you don't want to die for The Revolution and/or sacrifice your life, friends, family, the rest of the country, etc., then you're Insufficiently Pure and must be Purged. In the deeply twisted minds of the Online Leftists, this is the only possible interpretation of Biden's loss, so they'll push for it as hard as they can! The Frogmore cottage stuff is a genius bit of press given that Harry and Meghan had moved out already and this was really the royal story today. I mean there's a reason Harry and Meghan get pissed off and it's that they are usually the press bait/cover up.

She's absolutely on the money. All of the royal-related news is now about Frogmore instead of Charles's meeting with Ursula von der Leyen. I hate to sound like an obsessive stan, but, good lord, I'm sick and tired of this BS. I don't know how Harry and Meghan do it. If it were me, I would have ended the relationship with Charles and William a long time ago. My tolerance for BS and toxic relationships is low.

I hope that Harry will realize that it's not unconscious bias—it's racism. They do know why you left Harry; they just don't care. But some… will not. And those people are refusing change because they refuse to be open-minded and come to realization that maybe their way of thinking isn’t as productive or rational as they once thought.

And these behaviors are usually taught, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept the “norm” that was taught to you.

I’m sick of senseless violence upon other race, religions, etc. I’m sick of these old bigots running things. And I’m sick of NOBODY taking accountability and fighting to make a change.

This world is legit falling apart because none of us can get on the same page. None of us can accept non-hateful opinions. Nobody can accept different. And nobody can accept and realize that change isn’t always a bad thing.

It’s only bad when your narrative is bad. (Hence the US funding Israel) Oh, yeah. I may not be political but I see things. I hear things. I am well aware of the stuff that goes on around me.

We have one life to live and this is what most people are choosing?

See, I understand what Metzen wants to do—get back to that mythical emotion that kept us playing WoW long ago when the story didn’t make us feel like garbage because we were too busy having fun with friends to notice (or even care enough) the story always had these problematic undertones. Basically restoring WoW pride without the misogyny, racism, and homophobia (seemingly).

And I’m not saying it’s particularly bad that Anduin gets to be tormented and bitter as he works through the bs the Jailer did through him or his own doubts (because he’s like ‘what if these were my inner dark urges’ or whatever), but so many characters have gone through lots of traumatic things and haven’t been given the space or closure he will get.

The former ultra holy white guy gets the space to heal, an emotional support network, and a greater purpose.

Like sure—kudos to them for actually aiming for that kind of plot and not ‘my trauma made me evil/a doormat’ but I can understand how it’ll feel sticky for some players that he’s the one getting this arc.

I clarify I’m an Anduin enjoyer. Perhaps it’s a personal bias because he reminds me of someone important who used to hope for and tried seeing the best in people—a trait I admire deeply because that could never be me.

But some people are going to be mad because ‘why not *insert my fave traumatized character here*?’ And it’s a valid criticism.

Putting the story bit aside, why are they doing a 20-going-on-tired-40 aesthetic choice for his next chapter? It feels like such erasure of the ‘soft pretty boy.’ Must men in WoW always enter a rugged and hardened era because the alternative isn’t masculine enough?

I have no idea what the future holds for WoW, but I’ll keep watching from the sidelines.

Also, do they not know how to age up someone to mid-twenties? He doesn’t even look like himself. They took his nose away.

I cannot stand the way Dameyra stans treat Laena in their fics.I’ve read a few and I scroll through the tag sometimes.I don’t really ship it but they all have in common this completely irrational Laena hate where they’re obsessed with making her suffer or they kill her off in the most brutal way for the sake of Daemon and Rhaneyra.Then everyone in the comments is rooting for her death or downfall.Dameyra shippers are so insufferable they are truly insaneeee.The way my girl is treated in this fandom is horrific.And then they claim not to hate black women.Justice for Laena!!

And you can’t use the excuse of well the show showed that Daemon didn’t love Laena, because in said show Daemon literally choked out Rhaenyra after she just gave birth yet you still have people saying she’s the love of his life🫠

Oh if you wanna get more angry about the drow stuff in bg3 here's some fun info: if you play a seldarine drow at least from what I've seen so far you get dialogue options specific to that and the common theme seems to be 'dont worry I'm not evil like those lolth sworn drow! I'm one of the good ones™' it's so gross. In the druid camp there's this tiefling kid you can talk to and they say something like 'we don't see a lot of drow here, we hear you steal kids' and you get multiple options for how to respond. One of them is a normal and good answer of 'people lie about us all the time' and the kid responds 'yeah people don't say nice things about tieflings either' which like good! That works! Acknowledgement that racism is built on lies with added solidarity between marginalized people! That's well written! And then it gets gross! Because instead of saying that if you're lolth sworn you can say 'we kill way more kids than we steal' which is fucking racist bs and also kinda antisemitic what with how that looks a hell of a lot like blood libel. But wait! There's more! Because if you're seldarine you can tell the kid 'youre thinking of the lolth sworn drow' because of course we need to differentiate between the 'good ones' and the 'bad ones' and to top it off you follow up that statement with "if you see red eyes, run." Because all of the evil drow have red eyes. Because what this video game needed was eyeball phrenology. For everyone who has been following along: Ray/Jordan/The Rat currently has two blogs that are revamped burners and appear to be getting ready to post her usual BS soon, those being lumineisqueen and fandomlover3458. If you haven't already, block her there.

Time for my favorite copypasta: Yuuna/Marie/Lumine/Ray/Jordan is a user in the TWST and Genshin fandom with a long history of racism, Sinophobia, homophobia, and TERF behavior, in addition to spamming tags with repetitive content and being linked to the harassment of other users.

Summary and More Below the Cut ->

New readers, once again, please go ahead and at least skim through those posts I linked, otherwise you really won't understand what the significance of the following information is.

She has gone by many names over the months, but so far, I have recorded 17 previous accounts/usernames/burner blogs that she has been using to perpetuate her nonsense. With the two newest renamings, that clocks in at 19 usernames. The names she has adopted, in what I believe to be choronological order starting around March of 2022, are as follows:

xiaoveniscanon, eimikoislove, (supposedly) femtwstocs, genshinlumine, yuunatsukuyomiinwonderland, deadyuunaacount, anonymousdiscourse, discourseinfandoms, lumineforlife, lesbiansinfandom, fandom4lesbians, mult1fandoml3sbian, magicalstorybook, cookiesandfairytales, fandomcoffee, nerdyfandomlover, cutemermaidprincess, and now lumineisqueen and fandomlover3458.

The names she has used consist of Yuuna, Marie, Ray, Jordan, Alex, and Madison, and she has (within weeks or months of each deletion and creation) has claimed to be 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 (not in order). Again, all of this is happening this year, in 2022.

And there are even more accounts that people believe to be her as well, but have no posts or activity yet, so I can't prove it. If you have had any interaction with any of these "people", it is all the same person. Am I annoyed that she's still kicking despite already having been exorcised 17 previous times? Yes.

But... I have a little piece of information that may or may not make you all feel better about the situation depending on how hilarious you find hypocrisy.

As I'm sure y'all see by now, The Rat has some very loud opinions about certain ships, mainly her campaign against people who ship Zhongli and Xiao from Genshin.

According to her, they have a familial relationship, specifically a father and son type bond, even though literally everyone she has interacted with and those who have spoken to me about the issue as well have said that she is wrong and making shit up.

Here's a screenshot from fandomlover3458 (anonymousdiscourse/discourseinfandoms) as an example, just the first one I found (lumineforlife was the old name used for lumineisqueen, same person), and this is a tame one:

I'm know you're probably wondering, "twst-discourse-bot mod, I already know this. This is old news." BUT WAIT. There's more. I received a DM recently from someone who's been basically following this clusterfuck circus from the start (you know who you are, and I love you) and it contained some very interesting information, specifically this screenshot from the fandomlover3458 following list:

HMM. INTERESTING. For those of you who don't want to look it up yourselves, or don't know what this screenshot means, the highlighted user is a proshipper. Meaning someone who believes all ships should be considered valid, including cases of inc*st, ped***ilia, any kind of abuse, etc.

So, ask yourself, dear reader: why is Ray, someone who has been adamantly fighting against a ship that they deem to be inc*stuous (by their own headcanon, not via actual canon information) to the point of viciously attacking users who ship it, following a proship account? Think very hard on this.

BUT. WAIT. THERE'S. MORE. They are not just following one (1) proshipper, no and they are not following 2, nor 3. They are following SEVEN EXPLICITLY PROSHIP ACCOUNTS. Highlighted for easy viewing, inclusionist is another word for proship, I believe:

She's following only 17 accounts and nearly half of them are proship. It was like Christmas came early for me when I found this out, I was giggling and kicking my feet like a devious little schoolgirl. If you're brand new, you wouldn't get just how vindicating this discovery was, after months of dealing with her idiocy. It's like smoking crack.

Several people have come to me, over time, asking if I thought The Rat was a troll and was doing all of this for kicks. To them I have to reiterate: no. I now believe she is a slimy, nasty excuse for a human being who is projecting her own questionable enjoyments onto others by playing morality police and using logic that doesn't make sense, unless you're the type to blindly agree to anything that someone slaps the word "problematic" in front of.

And a disclaimer: I'm not interested in starting a debate over pro/anti ship with this post, I am simply putting this information out there to further illustrate her vile hypocrisy and construct my own opinions for the reasoning behind her actions. Your opinions are your own, don't try and sway me one way or another.

This is the honest to god punishment for the arrogance, the prejudice and the horrible way they and their hard core fans act around other humans.

I think RT collecting dust in a vault is just the karma they need and hopefully people don't brush aside the many injustices they've done- The many criticism videos out there were more than right about RT's bs and it just piled up and kept piling it and frankly? I'm tired of the people who pretended it wasn't a big deal or that it can slide under the radar with enough time. If RWBY somehow gets picked up; I think RT ruined it beyond salvation imo but if someone picks it up- eh I doubt I'll watch it, but some people want it to continue.

And I can kinda respect that, it's just not for me; too many people tarnished it.

Honestly I'm really tired of people just unapologetically refusing to be critical of @03 regardless of what BS they pull. They are not your saviors or your friends. Non-profit or not, they are just a website, and you, as one specific user, are not important to them. Neither am I.

And if you are critical, you're an anti. Like be reasonable with me, I don't care about thirty year olds writing porn about the teens from Haikyuu or someone's seven year age gap fic. I care about their refusal to confront racism and racist harassment (despite making a pledge to do so), their allowance of RPF smut fic about REAL LIFE children (NOT their characters, the actual actors), and their middling to positive stance on AI ('well it would be impossible to ban outright'. okay?? at least make a rule against it and try. at least TRY to embed things that make scraping harder).

I care about their terrible policies and their refusal to grow, change, and adapt at all over the last ten years.

Regarding the anon saying that racism in fandom is bs, let me tell you that you are incredibly wrong. Must I remind you how many reacted badly after the scene of Chim punching Buck? Must I point you to fics where Eddie, Chim, Albert and even Hen have been portrayed as the bad guys and the victim is always the poor defenseless white man that too many love to treat like a baby?

Another day, another lie exposed. There is only one South African actor in the Lion King cast, and he is now saying that he never said such a thing to MM, in fact, he has never met her. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I bet you MM believed a lot of actors there were from South Africa (unconcious bias and racism who?)

That being said, I have been thinking a lot a about that interview, and hardly MM is being seen in a good light (just for her Sugars and some woke people on social media). A lot of people are really tired of her BS and seeing a lot of lies and manipulation there. The saddest part is that The Cut printed all the stupidity she told them, without fact-checking 🤦🏻‍♀️ if the Cut was a joke, right now is trash. But, don't you think that that was the goal for them (the Cut)? Making noise, a 'new story' to offer and gain controversy.

I mean, after all, The Cut love the manipulator, scam and narc profiles, remember they were the responsible to make that article about Anna Delvey, so, in my point of view, perhaps the Cut noticed the big red flags and yikes about her, and that's why the editor decided to give the OK, because they know that would keep the world talking (even if was negative to her). And why did MM and her team accepted? Because as Anna Delvey, she believes her own lies and delusions, she believed the article was good for her because it protrayed her as she is (the thing here is that she believes she is cool, but she is not).

Yikes, MM is very similar to Anna Delvey (Making money with a 'Foundation', lies (even knowing someone will expose them), manipulation, playing the victim even when they knew they were the guilties, creating an alternative life, etc, etc, etc.) The only thing that Anna Delvey missed to make her plans a reality, was to got married with a Prince or a rich man.

I had no idea there was a magazine called The Cut until Meghan.

I think she has dwindled so far in popularity this is the best she could get.
