this album genuinely means so much to me, on so many levels. It’s probably one of my all-time favourites. it’s been with me through emotional ups and downs, and brought me to similarly intense emotions - when i first heard special needs, I cried; when i watch live performances of english summer rain, stef and brian’s onstage behaviours always make me smile.

the track arrangements, instrumentation, and lyrics are all so well-done and evocative. it opened me up to exploring genres like trip-hop and electronica - both of which i find really compelling - and yet nowhere else but placebo can you get tracks quite like the title track, protect me from what i want, special needs, english summer rain, or literally anything else on this album. only as of last year’s new album did they immerse themselves in electronic production to a similar extent as on sleeping with ghosts.

what recordings i’ve seen of the live shows from this period only strengthens this appreciation i have for the album - the performances are so electric and imbued with energy and passion in a way not quite like any other period of the band’s output - and even the new takes on old songs from the tour have a similar revitalization. I plan on giving the album a relisten - and if you haven’t yet seen it and want a more spontaneous take on these songs, i highly recommend their 2003 rock am ring show! it’s one of my personal favourite live performances of theirs.

Sleeping with Ghosts

His father is a strung-out alcoholic who still haunts his footsteps and his mother is barely clinging to reality anymore. His only solace is the one night a week that he gets to play in a small underground bar and lose himself to the music that made him who he is. A shattered heart won’t end him, because he can still wear it on his sleeve. That’s enough — isn’t it?

Fey Archer can do this. That’s what Feyre Archeron tells herself everytime she looks in the mirror. That’s a lot — considering she works as a model, living the high life of a New York socialite. Everywhere she goes, everyone knows her name; but she didn’t choose this. If it weren’t for supporting her sisters, Feyre would have disappeared years ago. Her latest problem is no ghost, but he certainly haunts her. Her relationship with Rhys Sanders started as a publicity stunt, but now it’s a personal circus she can’t escape. The best thing she can do is try to hide the bruises and wait for the day that her temporary escape into the world of Sleeping With Ghosts will be real.

They meet in that underground bar long after his last show is over. Is this fate, or will they both linger in orbit until gravity pulls them away? Only time will tell.
