Trying to shove tiny feet into tiny shoes at 6:30 in the morning was no easy task, especially when the owner of said tiny feet was fighting with all the strength in her five-year-old body to keep said feet out of said shoes.
“Please, Sage. I’ll do anything you want, just please let me put your shoes on.” pleaded an exhausted Eddie. They were already running late, which meant that he would get dirty looks from the other parents, well, dirtier than what he was already expecting. It was Sage’s first day of kindergarten, which he felt bittersweet about. She’d been attending preschool in previous years, so the transition wouldn’t be as difficult for her as it may be for other children, but she didn’t always do well around new people. She was like her dad in that way- she could be shy at first (which deviated from his own standoffishness), but once she warmed up, she was a sweet and bubbly kid.
Sage put her resistance on hold, “Anything?” She asked, raising an eyebrow. Eddie knew that look: mischievous and calculating. It scared him a little to see that she was so much like himself, but it also made him a little proud. “Yes, baby. Just put your shoes on and we’ll do anything you want after school.” Sage thought for a moment, then made intense eye contact with Eddie, “Ice cream. And breakfast for dinner.” She bargained. Eddie chuckled and nodded, “Sounds good to me. We got a deal?” He asked, dropping the small shoe he was holding and sticking out his hand. She nodded and shook it, then stuck her foot out for him, beaming at the fact that she would get her two favorite things later that day. Little did she know that he had already planned on those things happening.
He sighed and thanked her, slipping on her glittery pink sneakers and tying them before picking her up off of the couch and setting her on his hip as he grabbed what they’d need for the day. Sage’s brand new Care Bears backpack- check. Keys- check. Wallet- check. Care Bears lunch box- check.
“Alright, ready to go?” He asked her. Sage nodded warily and Eddie walked out the door, kicking it closed behind them before walking to his beat up van, sliding open the back passenger door and setting Sage in her booster seat. He placed her bags on the floor by her feet and helped her buckle her seat belt. She looked up at him, “Dad?” She asked in a whisper “Yes, baby?” He responded absentmindedly. “Do you think my teacher will like me?” She asked anxiously. That made Eddie pause. He looked at her very seriously, grabbing her tiny hands in his own, “She is going to love you, kiddo. You’re freakin’ metal.” He said, leaning down and kissing her forehead. She nodded, “Metal.”

Your classroom was perfect. You’d decided on a rainbow theme for the year, wanting the classroom environment to be welcoming, colorful, and engaging to the 26 five-year-olds that would arrive within the next hour. Your lesson plans were perfect too. You were quite proud of yourself. Moving to a completely new state after teaching in another for a few years made for somewhat of a culture shock. Learning all of the new standards and adapting your previous lesson plans to fit them, along with having to write completely new lessons that fit your school’s specific curriculum was difficult, but not impossible. It was done. Everything was perfect. You were ready.
You’d moved to Hawkins, Indiana at the very end of the summer. You grew up in another small, southern town, so the small town environment wasn’t exactly new to you. It just meant you had to find your footing here. Declare yourself as a character amongst the established ones. You had been able to meet a few of the other teachers, and they all seemed nice enough, but they were all much older than you were. You graduated college only three years prior, and it seemed like half of your coworkers were on the brink of forgetting what college they went to. You needed to find friends your own age, and quick, because being a teacher can be stressful. Having friends around who you can vent to is key to keeping yourself sane.
You looked in the mirror on the inside of your classroom closet door, adjusting your hair for a moment. It was tied up with a clip, messily, but purposefully and cutely so. You pushed a strand behind your ear and made sure you didn’t have lipstick on your teeth. You decided to wear a light green dress and white sneakers- cute, stylish, and comfortable enough to chase around several very energetic children. You knew that the first day of kindergarten was always one in which you met the parents, and while they’d mainly be focused on their children, you knew there was a large possibility of photos being taken. You wanted to make a great first impression, and if your were immortalized in a Polaroid or two, you’d like to look nice. Above you, the school bell rang, signaling to the children that they could start making their way to class. You smiled and walked over to the door of your class, opening it up for the parents to bring their kids in.
Parents and students began trickling into the classroom. You shook their hands and introduced yourself to each one, smiling genuinely and directing the parents to where their child’s desk and cubby were located. On the first day, you always let parents stay for a while, and even held a carpet story time/coloring session in order to make the transition easier for both parties. You noted that a few kids were crying, which gave you a good indication of what kids would continue to be criers throughout the year. You didn’t judge, you just liked to know what was up.
You were crouching down to take a picture with one of your new students when a man who looked very out of place in your rainbow classroom walked in, a small girl hiding behind his pant leg. You smiled up at him, holding up one finger apologetically, signaling that you’d be with him in a moment. You looked up at the mom who’d just taken your picture, “Would you like me to take a picture of the two of you?” You asked. The woman nodded, so you stood and swapped positions with her. You wound the film on her disposable camera, “Say cheese!” You encouraged, which drew a confused face from the small boy, as he’d somehow never heard the phrase before. You snapped the picture without realizing the face he’d made and smiled, handing the camera back to the also oblivious mother and she walked her son to his desk.
You then turned your attention to the man standing in the doorway. You smiled and stuck out your hand, introducing yourself. “Eddie Munson.” He said softly. His hands were warm, but you noted the rings he wore made them feel colder. Eddie was an attractive guy, you wouldn’t lie to yourself about it. His hair was long, dark, and curly. He wore a leather jacket and a denim vest on top of it. He definitely had the whole rockstar look down, which looked a bit funny when surrounded by rainbows. There was also his daughter, who looked like a pink glitter bomb had exploded over her, as was typical for girls her age. You didn’t linger on his touch like you may have liked to, as you had to introduce yourself to someone more important. You bent and stood on your knees, peeking around Mr. Munson’s knees, “And who is this pretty princess?” You asked, hoping that calling her a princess would help her warm up to you.
You were right. The small girl poked her head out from behind the man’s knees. You saw that she got her looks from her dad; she had brown, curly hair that was currently tied back in a high ponytail, coupled with bright brown eyes and a small smattering of the lightest freckles across her nose. She spoke, barely above a whisper, “I’m Sage.” You smiled encouragingly, “That’s such a pretty name. Did you know Sage is a type of plant? And a color?” You gasped, piquing her interest, “Oh my goodness! It’s the color of my dress!” You said, feigning surprise, as if you were just discovering that fact for the first time. “And guess what?” You whispered. Sage was entranced, gaining the courage to move out from behind her dad and listen to the ‘secret’ you were entrusting her with. “It’s my favorite color.” You smiled softly, making eye contact with the small girl. It made her feel special. She smiled up at her dad, who was watching the interaction intently. “You want to find your desk and set your stuff down, Sage?” You asked her. She nodded fervently, excited to get the day started.
You stood back up to your fill height and led the two to Sage’s desk. “So, Mr. Munson, you are welcome to through story time and coloring. I try to allow time for the parents to stay for a while to help their kids adjust to the new environment.” You told him as Sage was putting her lunch box into her desk. The man seemed to shift uncomfortably, “Ah- I don’t know. Are you sure?” He asked you. You nodded, “Yeah, of course. Every parent is welcome to stay through that time. If Sage doesn’t do well around new people or in a new place, it can help her out a lot.” You assured him. He seemed to think for a moment before nodding, making his decision.
Little did you know, the reason so many people were watching the interaction carefully was because, despite being a good dad who provided for his daughter, the rumor mill still swirled around the Munson family. He didn’t want his daughter to have to deal with the same problems he did, so he was apprehensive about staying, but you seemed to believe it would benefit her if he was there, so he would stay.
Another parent walked through the door, so you excused yourself to go greet them the same way. After your kindergarteners we’re all there, the bell rang, signaling the beginning of class. You smiled wide, walking to the front of the classroom. “Good morning, everyone! I hope we’re all excited to get started with our day! Today, we are going to…”
Tumblr media
After successfully driving Sage to school, and luckily arriving around the time he’d originally intended to somehow, he guided his small daughter through the halls of the school. At the end of the kindergarten hall was Sage’s classroom for the year. He bent down to her level, “You ready? Or do you want to take a minute?” He asked her. He knew that sometimes she had to prepare herself to go into a new situation. He was the same way; needing to take a few breaths or psych himself up for whatever he would encounter. Sage thought for a moment, “I’m ready.” She said, looking determined. He nodded, holding her hand and guiding her to the classroom.
That’s when he spotted you. You had the biggest and most genuine smile on your face as you took a photo with another student. He saw the way you acknowledged him right when he walked into the door, making him feel seen, but still kept your focus on the people you were with, most likely doing the same for them. It was a small gesture, sure, and it may have gone unnoticed by anyone else, but he really didn’t know what to think about all of this. He didn’t recognize you, even though you seemed to be around the same age, so that meant you likely hadn’t heard the nasty rumors that still lingered around him like a rain cloud, even into adulthood. He was drinking in the small kindnesses you showed him in the following interactions.
You reached out and shook his hand, introducing yourself to him. He didn’t know why, but it surprised him that you introduced yourself with your first and last name to him. It made you seem more approachable. He spoke his own name as calmly as he could, internally struggling not to stumble over it. When you bent down to introduce yourself to his daughter, he watched as you related to her immediately, over something as silly as a color. But she opened up quickly to you, which was so incredibly rare for her. He truly couldn’t grasp what it was about you, but he basked in your presence and he didn’t want to leave. Not for Sage’s sake, but for his own. It was no secret to himself that he found you attractive- you were pretty, new to their small town, and he didn’t see a ring- but there was something else he couldn’t place. He obviously couldn’t do anything about it in the moment, so he shifted his attention back to his daughter, helping her prep for her first day.
Tumblr media
Once you wrapped the story up, you had the students start on a coloring page that correlated with the story. This was the time for parents to start trickling out. Eddie watched as other parents left. He looked to Sage, “Listen kiddo, I’ve got to go to work, but I’ll pick you up later, okay?” He told her. During pre-k, they’d gotten pretty good at the whole ‘dad’s going to be gone for a few hours but you will be ok’ exchange. Sage nodded, “Okay. Don’t forget about the ice cream and breakfast.” She said, scribbling with a red crayon and not paying him much attention. He ruffled her hair and kissed the top of her head before standing up and heading towards the door.
Before he could leave, you grabbed a piece of paper off of the desk, “Oh, Mr. Munson-“ you whispered, as the students were quietly working as the parents slowly left, “Here is my newsletter for the month. It basically covers everything we’ll be doing in class, and what you can be doing to help supplement Sage’s learning at home. I usually mail these out to the parents, but the front office said your address changed recently?” Eddie took the newsletter and nodded, “Ah- thank you. Yeah, we moved into a new house last week. It was after I registered her, so I’ll have to get that changed. Do you need me to write my address down before I leave?” He asked. “Well, if you would, that would be very helpful, but if Sage will get upset if you’re here longer, I can just wait until you update your information with the office.” You told him quietly. Eddie shook his head, “Nah, Sage is a trooper. She knows the drill.” He said, proud of his daughter.
You smiled softly, a smile that made his knees feel a little weak, and grabbed a pen and a notepad off of your desk, handing it to him. “If you could write down your new address, as well as your phone number, that would be great.” You told him. He had to fight the urge to make a joke about hitting on him in front of the kids. Years ago, that would have been the first thing he said to you, and he wouldn’t have thought twice. But now, his number one concern was his daughter, and doing anything that may end up being detrimental to her, like flirting with her teacher, was off his radar. He scribbled out the information before handing the paper back to you, “Thank you. Just make sure you update this with the office as soon as possible. Hopefully you’ll only hear from me about once or twice a month, as I do the newsletter and a call home for an update. But keep an eye on the events section of the newsletter-“ you said, pointing it out, “-it will have important dates like any parent/teacher conferences and the kid’s Christmas recital on there. And please, don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions or concerns. My information is down at the bottom. I’ve got an answering machine, so leave a voicemail if I don’t pick up; I should give you a call back within 24 hours.” You informed him quietly, finishing up with a soft smile.
Eddie nodded, taking in all the information you were giving him. It felt like a lot, but he knew that most of the important stuff would be in the paper you gave him. “Thank you. I’ve still got a little more time before work so I think I’ll go to the office now.. where is it again?” He asked, feeling more lost than he should. This is where he went to elementary school, but it had been so long since he’d been in the building it felt a little foreign to him. You smiled and opened the door, pointing him in the right direction through the halls. He thanked you once more, then started off thought the school as you shut the door.
You and Eddie were both left the same thought:
This isn’t good.

ft. modern au, Single(Seahorse)Dad!Eddie, SwimInstructor!Steve
Eddie Munson didn't know how to swim. Growing up in landlocked states while despising every swimsuit he was ever presented with, it just made sense. He didn't need to know how to swim, there was no reason for it, and he was perfectly fine with it.
Until Max.
Specifically, until Max decided, after watching the 2020 Olympic swimming, that she was going to be an olympic swimmer. She kept bugging Eddie, begging him to sign her up for swim lessons with all the umph a six year old could muster.
And Eddie was a weak willed man, especially when it comes to his daughter. So he said yes.
Eddie spent the next week and a half researching the best swim instructors around, googling and calling and looking at reviews. Eventually, he settled for the Hawkins Aquatic Center. With it being relatively close, a 20 minute drive at most, and having the best reviews out of any and all other pools in the area, it was a clear winner.
So that Tuesday, while Max was at day camp, Eddie made the call.
“Hawkins Aquatic Center, this is Robin! How can I help you today?” One of the bubbliest voices Eddie had ever heard answered the phone, immediately putting him a little more at ease.
“Hi, I was looking to set my daughter up for some swim lessons?” He asked, hoping Robin didn't pick up on his slight nervousness.
“Of course! I just need a little information. Her name, age and birthday, and skill level is what I need now, and I’ll ask for some more information about you once we schedule.”
“Yeah, for sure. Her name is Maxine Munson, but everyone calls her Max. She’s six, her birthday is June 14th, 2014. She doesn't really… know how to swim?” As he gave her the information, his nerves almost doubled. He couldn't swim, he wouldn't be able to practice with her! What if she drowns? What if something happens? What if-
“Alright, Mr. Munson, I’m assuming?” Robin asked sweetly, interrupting his spiral.
“Uh- yeah that's- that’s me. You can just call me Eddie. Eddie Munson, at your service! Ha! Sorry, that was, like, super lame.” He cringed at his antics, but a bubbly laugh filled the phone.
“Got it, Eddie! So from the information you’ve given to me, it seems like it’ll be best to put her in our beginners class for kids under 7. We typically have two instructors that rotate throughout the week, but one of them is on paternity leave, so she’ll only be with Coach Harrington. There's two options for this class. Twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 in the afternoon, or three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 5 to 6:30 in the afternoon. Do either of those work for you?”
Eddie hesitated. He knew how much enthusiasm Max had about swimming, but he was nervous about taking her so often. But the more time she can get in the water, the more she’ll practice. Plus first grade homework isn't terrible, so she’ll be able to continue when school starts up again.
“Eddie? You still with me?” Robin asked. He must have taken too long to answer.
“Yeah, sorry! Just, uh, just thinking.” He replied lamely.
Robin seemed to catch on to his anxiety. “A lot of parents are nervous about teaching their kids how to swim, I get it! But Steve, or Coach Harrington I should say, is the best in the area. He’s been an instructor here for a few years and loves it. There’s always lifeguards on duty and all of our staff are trained in basic first aid and CPR. Parents are always welcome to sit in on lessons as well, there's seating in the instructional pool area. Max will be in great hands!”
Eddie took a breath. Robin's ramblings helped put him at ease, knowing all of the precautions the center takes to keep everyone safe.
“Thank you so much, Robin. I think three times a week will work best, Max has been bugging me for weeks! I know she’ll be ecstatic when I tell her I signed her up.” Eddie can already picture her reaction, grinning and hopping around in excitement.
“Sounds great, Eddie! I can guarantee she’ll love it. So now I just need to ask you a few questions! I just need your email, the best phone number to reach you at, an emergency contact other than you, and we can get her all set!” Eddie breathed a sigh of relief, giving her the information she asked for.
“Alright, we’ve got her in the system! You guys can come in any time this week for a tour of the place and meet Coach Harrington, but her first lesson will be next Monday, August 10th. We do ask that she brings goggles, but we have extras in case she forgets them. Do you have any other questions for me?”
Taking a second to think, Eddie replied. “I think we’ve got everything covered. Thank you, Robin. I really appreciate your help!”
“It’s really no problem! If you do think of any questions you may have, you can always ask when you tour, or call us! We look forward to seeing you!”
All that was left to do was to invest in a good swimsuit, some goggles, and tell Max.
—-------------------------
“Hey, stinker! How was camp today?” Eddie asked as Max climbed in the car and got herself situated in her seat.
“It was great! We did finger paintings ‘n played on the playground! There was a worm on the slide and Lucas was too afraid to touch it, so I got it ‘n brought it to the grass!” Max beamed at her father, showing her gap toothed smile. “I’m gonna bring home the art tomorrow, but Miss Joyce said we have to let it dry tonight. I did a picture of us!”
Eddie laughed lightly at his daughter's antics, smiling right back at her. “Sounds like today was fun, bug! I do have a little surprise for you when we get home though, okay?”
That got Max’s attention quickly, asking all sorts of questions about it. Eddie simply smiled at her and turned up the music, an old The Cure CD playing on the radio system. As the volume rose, all Eddie could hear was an exasperated “Daaaaaad!” from the back seat.
The ride home was short and sweet, the ending of Friday I’m in Love fading out as they pulled into the driveway. As soon as the car stopped, Max unbuckled and sprinted towards the door, abandoning her backpack and lunchbox.
“I know you're excited, Max, but you have to come get your stuff!” Eddie called out as he exited the driver's seat. The sound of her Skechers on the concrete and her small giggles approaching before receding back to the front door where she bounced on her feet in a poor attempt of patience.
Eddie sighed and shook his head, a small smile playing at his lips as he unlocked the front door. Immediately, Max ran inside, throwing her stuff on the couch and turning to her father expectantly.
“Where is it? What is it? Can I know now?” She asked, her little body practically vibrating in excitement and anticipation.
Eddie laughed warmly, dramatically rolling his eyes. “I guess you can know now, since you’ve been so patient.” Max snorted at his sarcasm, eyes going crinkly at the corners. “Go look in your room, love.”
And with that, she was off. Running as fast as her little legs could take her, not minding her dad’s warnings to not run in the house. Practically tearing her bedroom door off its hinges, she rushed into her room. Sat in a neat pile on her bed was a small black and red one piece swimsuit, a pair of black goggles, and a print out of the confirmation email from the Hawkins Aquatic Center.
Finally catching up and leaning on her door frame, Eddie quietly asked, “What do you think?”
It’s a miracle the neighbours didn't call the cops that day.
All of Max’s excitement and happiness seemed to explode out of her, letting out one of the loudest screams he had ever heard. Before he could blink, the small child tackled Eddie into a crushing hug, jumping onto him like a koala.
“Really? You’re for real?” She asked, pulling her head back from the embrace to look at her dad, unshed tears threatening to escape from her eyes.
“I’m for real, baby. I promise.”

You've been with Joseph long enough that his tiny two year old daughter Dodie, has a routine with you when you're around. You don't live with Joseph yet although he has mentioned it in passing a few times, but you just want to make sure that Dodie always comes first, and you don't want to take up anymore of her and her daddys space that you haven't already. You do has much as you can for the two of them, showing Joseph how much you love him and Dodie. Joseph tries to stop you often, especially when you can't stop buying things for his little girl, but you just love her so much and want to give her everything.
So when Joseph calls you in the early morning on your day off, reluctantly asking if you could come over and watch Dodie while he had to go into the city for meetings you quickly said yes. His usual sitter fell through, and he couldn't get another one in time and didn't want to risk commuting with a fussy toddler and then into a meeting of a potential big project. Reassuring him it was no big deal, and that you would have found yourself on his couch later that night anyway so it was more of a convenience. He sighed and said he'd make it up to you, but you shushed him, he didn't need to owe you anything for taking care of his daughter, it was a privilege to you and you would never say no.
You slip on a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt, chucking an oversized sweater over your shoulders and shoved your belongings into your pockets and headed out the door to Joes apartment. You stopped to grab yourself and Joe a coffee.
When you get to Joes apartment, you could already hear Dodie babbling away on the other side of the door before you unlocked it, letting yourself in with the extra key Joe had given you. Dodie squealed from the other side of the kitchen when she saw the door open and you come through. Two coffees in one hand, tucked under your chin, while you kicked the door shut  with your foot and dropped the keys onto the counter. Joe smiled at you from his spot next to Dodie, an all too small looking spoon held in his hand. Putting the rest of your items onto the counter you rounded the small island towards your two favourite people.
"Good morning my loves!" You cooed, giving Joseph a small kiss, and a splatter of kisses to Dodies cheeks while she giggled. All blonde curls and big brown eyes just like her daddy.
You smiled at her fondly, thinking back to when she was so shy around you. She would constantly hide her face into Joseph, little hands clutching into the fabric of his clothes. In the beginning she wanted nothing to do with you really, not that she didn't like you, Dodie just genuinely had no interest in you being there; and then one day the three of you were cuddled on the couch, she was tucked up into Josephs side while you were tucked up against the other. Your hand tracing patterns lazily across his stomach, only stopping when Dodies small hand reached across to hold onto one of your fingers, sighing in content around the nipple of her bottle while her eyes became heavy and she eventually fell asleep.
"I'm so sorry for calling you on your day off, I feel terrible" Joseph said standing up to greet you, his hands grabbing at your waist to pull you closer to him. "You look beautiful" He said softly, and you wrapped your arms around his neck and stood on your tippy toes to kiss him. "So do you" You said between kisses. "And don't ever be sorry for calling me when you need something, especially if it's for your kid okay?" you grabbed his face in your hands and squishing his cheeks together.
"I love you, and I love her, I'd do anything for the both of you" You kissed his nose and his cheeks  tinged with pink. "Go get ready for work, I'll continue feeding this little gremlin" You said looking down at Dodie, who had her spoon aggressively pushed into mouth, making her cheek pop out, but was content nonetheless. You took Josephs spot in his chair, taking the spoon away from Dodie, scooping up some of the oatmeal in her bowl and bringing it to her mouth, she accepted it happily, shimmying in her seat with each bite.
You watched Joseph get ready for his day, flitting around his apartment, stepping over baby toys, and laundry that needed to be folded all while mumbling to himself as he went. It was all very domestic, and made your heart flutter, and you couldn't wait for the days when this would become your new everyday routine with him.
By the time Joseph was ready, you and Dodie were sat on the carpet in the living room, the wizard of Oz playing on the TV behind you, while you passed different coloured blocks with animals on them back and forth to dodie while she babbled away stacking them.
Laying on your side, propped up by your elbow you reached for one of the blocks and asked "What sound does a cat make Dodie?" Pointing to a square with an orange tabby cat on it. She took the block from you while making small high pitched sounds that sounded like 'maow'
"Good job baby! Cats do meow don't they?" You said while adding a few meows yourself, tickling under her chin until she giggled. You swiped your finger under her chin, catching the drool that pooled there and wiping it on your jeans, leaning back onto your elbow to glance up at the TV. The scene had startled Dodie and her head snapped towards the tv, watching a glimpse of the wicked witch as she cackled loudly, and Dodie was very much not a fan of her. She whined, her eyes quickly filling with tears as she reached her little hands out towards you for help.
"Oh darling" you said sitting up, gathering her into your arms, one hand scooped under her bum, the other resting on the back of her head. You quickly reached for the remote and paused the movie so the witch wasn't on screen, and she tucked her face into your neck. You cooed at her. "It's okay baby it's just pretend" Bringing her with you up onto the couch, you slouched down so she could lay on her tummy on top of you. You patted her back with one hand while you wrapped your finger around one of her curls.
"What's going on over here? A cuddle party without me?" Joseph said standing on the other side of the couch, hands on his hips with a fake scowl across his face. Dodie turned her head hearing Josephs voice, reaching a hand out towards him while using the other to push herself up off of you, her little palm digging into your collarbone harshly but you didn't complain. "Dada" she mumbled around her pacifier, big fat tears rolling down her cheeks, a small hiccup of a sob escaping her.
"Wicked witch" you stated, lifting her up off of you and into Josephs waiting arms and he nodded, knowing exact scene had bothered his little girl, while he joined you on the couch.
"Well thankfully I've got a few moments to spare to give my girls a cuddle before I have to go" he said leaning into you, wrapping one arm around your shoulders to pull you into him while the other held Dodie firmly on his lap, patting at her back to sooth her.
"So mean that daddy has to leave us huh?" You said to dodie, swiping a tear off her tiny cheek.
"Well I have to work if I want to keep spoiling you two don't I?" he teased, kissing your head where he could reach.
"I get spoiled just from being around you Joey" You said honestly, snuggling your cheek into his shoulder, dreading how short this sweet moment is going to be, knowing Joe had to leave soon.
"You're so annoying" he said with a huff. "Can't I spoil you with things?"
"You can! I'm just saying I don't need anything, everything I need or would want is right here" You said glancing down between Dodie and back up at him.
Joseph swore his heart was going to squeeze so tight it would pop out of his chest with how much he adored you. You never once complained about Dodie, not that many people would, she's perfect, but being a single dad while dating doesn't always go to plan. Sometimes sitters fall through, or babies get sick, schedules can't be shifted because you're trying to in-still a routine for your kid, all the while she's sleep regressing and having a full meltdown in the middle of a grocery store. They're all things you took with pride, your smile never faltering, and always eager to help whenever you could.
"I love you" he said in a rush.
You giggled, hiding your face slightly into his shoulder before kissing it and turning back to him. "I love you too Joey"
His phone dinged, signalling him it was time to leave, so he hoisted Dodie up onto his hip while he walked over to the front door. Following behind him while you waited patiently for him to hand Dodie back to you. It was quite impressive how much he could do with one hand, obviously having to get used to it over the majority of the past two years, but it still baffled you nonetheless. He managed to get his shoes and coat on in record time all while his little girl clutched onto him.
"Okay, I shouldn't be gone for too long, probably just a little past lunch" He pulls Dodie away from him slightly. "Be a good girl for me while I'm gone yeah?" He said peppering kisses all over her face until she giggled so hard her pacifier fell out of her mouth.
"Formula is in the cupboard, you already know where that is, I have her bottles already done in the fridge so you just have to warm them up, and if you-"
"Joseph!" You huffed out with a laugh, quickly bending down to grab the pacifier, and held your arms out for her when you stood back up. She let you scoop her up with no fuss, and you leaned forward up on your tippy those to kiss Joseph once more before he left. "I've done this a million times, I know what I'm doing with her" You teased.
"Thank you again sweetheart" he said with his forehead touching yours.
"You don't need to thank me Joey" you said with an eye roll.
"Yeah but that wont stop me from doing it" He kissed you again. "Alright I'm off, see you in a few hours"
"Say bye dada!" You said to dodie, taking her hand into yours and waving it at Joseph while he left. She giggled in your arms.
You honestly didn't have to do much when you watched over Dodie by yourself. She was quite an independent baby and didn't mind playing by herself. You texted Joseph often throughout the day to ease his anxieties of leaving her alone. No matter who she was with he always worried about her, so you always sent him a million pictures of her in the mean time.
Snuggled up on the couch dodie sat in-between your legs while you scrolled through your phone, looking at pictures and videos of animals, and other baby safe videos that Dodie had much to say about, and you let her babble. Pretending to understand what she was saying, a few actual  words slipping into her sentences every so often.
The two of you did that for a while before going back to her toys on the floor, singing and dancing to music, your morning had been filled with so much laughter you thought your cheeks might fall off with how much you had been smiling.
Around 11 you noticed her starting to get a little fussy, rubbing at her eyes with the backs of her hands, and whining until finally turning to you and said "Up?" arms outstretched towards you while her hands open and closed rapidly.
"What do you need little one?" you asked, lifting her up and holding he securely against your hip, bringing her with you to the kitchen because you already knew what she wanted.
"You want a bottle and have a little nap?" you said glancing down at her pouty face.
"Buh-buh" she said with a nod, watching your hands as you made work of one of her pre made bottles, popping it into the microwave for a few seconds.
"Yep, we just gotta warm it up a bit yeah?" She laid her head on your shoulder, her hands playing with the ends of your hair while you swayed her back and forth until her bottle was done. You tested it to make sure the temperature wasn't too hot, and when it wasn't you put the lid back on. Giving it a good shake before handing it to her.
"You wanna lay down in dadas bed?" You asked her, reaching for a cleaned pacifier off of the counter, and a fresh baby blanket off the back of the couch.
"Dada" she said repeating you, looking towards the front door where hours ago she watched him leave for work. "Dada?" she said again, but it sounded like a question and you looked down at her to see the sudden realization on her face, that her father was not around. You made the mistake of mentioning him and now in her sleepy and vulnerable state she just wanted her dada.
"Dada will be home soon my love" you quickly placed all the items held in your other hand onto Jospehs bed. Repositioning Dodie so she was now cradled in your arms on her back, and you held her bottle to her lips. She whined, shoving it away with her hands, and rolling her head to the side. You started bouncing and rocking her side to side. "I know baby" you cooed.
"You don't want your nice warm bottle? It'll make you feel so good" you said while trying again to feed her but she wasn't having it. Whimpering until she wailed, one loud cry before tucking her face into your chest.
"It's okay baby, daddy will be home soon, you're okay" you said softly, bringing her back up your chest, her little feet kicking slightly, trying to push herself away from you in frustration but gave up quickly, too tired to fight you. One hand held under her bum and the other on the back of her head. You began humming 'somewhere over the rainbow' while continuing to rock her back and forth, patting her bum lightly while she cried. Letting her get the emotions out, knowing the only solution was Joseph, but that wasn't an option right now.
She didn't cry for long, and her hiccuped cries faded until she was almost completely asleep in your arms. "Buh-buh" she said leaning back to look at you.
"Yeah? You want your bottle?"
"Pwease" she said looking at you with those big brown eyes, that were almost identical to Joes.
You were laying on your side on Josephs bed, with Dodie laying down next to you. The wizard of Oz continued to play and dodie was interested in it again while her droopy eyes watched the screen. One of her hands holding the bottom of her bottle to her mouth, the other playing with the sleeve of your sweater. "Did you know that your daddy named you after Dorthy?" You said quietly, leaning forward to catch a glimpse at her face. "You were so little, he told me he couldn't believe you were even real" You laughed at the memory. "You were in the NICU and they always had music, or a kids movie for the babies when someone couldn't be in there with him, and this movie" you said pointing to the TV "This movie was on all the time, whenever he came to feed you, or just to hold you, it always happened to be on, and he decided on Dorthy"
You watched her eyes slowly close, and finally, after a few fighting blinks she fell asleep. Her bottle falling from her mouth which you quickly replaced with her pacifier, moving her bottle onto the nightstand before turning back to her. You traced her features lightly. The tips of your fingers trailing their way around her small face. Across her eyebrows, the slope of her nose, the apple of her cheeks.
"Your daddy is doing such a good job raising you" you whispered to her. "I'm proud of him"
You were proud of him. You couldn't imagine what it must have been like to be a single father to a newborn baby, and even now with Dodie at two, I'm sure it's still a huge learning curve.
After a few more selfish minutes of watching her sleep, you scooped her up as gently as you could, bringing her into her small room across from Josephs. Placing her in her crib, pulling the curtain closed, turning the baby monitor on along with her sound machine all before creeping out and closing the door almost fully. Leaving it open just a few inches so you could come sneak a glance at her whenever you wanted.
With a satisfied sigh you turned to make your way back towards the living room, jumping when you noticed Joseph standing just on behind.
"Jesus Christ!" you exclaimed, as quietly as you could. Placing a hand over your heart glancing quickly at Dodie through the door to make sure you didn't startle her awake.
"I mean the name is Joseph but you can call me whatever you want" he teased with that annoyingly handsome smirk spreading across his face.
Overwhelmed with the love for his daughter and the love for him you rushed to him, almost knocking him over when you wrapped your arms around his neck. Crushing the two of you into a hug.
"What's wrong lovey?" he said into your hairline with a kiss. "Usually it's dodie who misses me this much"
"Always miss you" you said into his shoulder, muffled by his jacket. You pulled back from him, arms still wrapped around his neck, and his brows furrowed when he saw your eyes glisten with tears.
"Y'alright?" he asked, bringing both his hands up to cup your cheeks, swiping away a stray tear with his thumb.
"I just love you a lot" you laughed, causing more tears to fall. "And Dodie, you've done so well with her, she's so perfect Joey, and I'm just truly so happy and- and lucky! To have you both in my life"
Joe cleared his throat, trying to shake off the sudden flood of emotions, but he still smiled. He leaned down to kiss you softly. Your wet cheeks molding with his, and you both laughed. "I'm so utterly obsessed with you" he whispered. "Move in with me" he said abruptly
"What?" you said pulling away from him slightly.
"Move in with me" he repeated smiling.  "Or we can find a bigger place, whatever it is we can do it" He peppered your face with kisses.
"Joseph!" you squealed, slapping at his chest playfully.
"What?" he said with that cheeky grin.
"You really want me to move in with you?" you said gnawing at your bottom lip with nerves
"I really do" he said kissing you quick, his thumb coming up to pull your lip from your teeth. "I can't stand another day not waking up to you, I want to see both my girls each day"
"Really?" you asked again.
"Pinkie promise" he said leaning back, only enough to bring his hand up, pinkie outstretched towards you.
Your stomach flipped and you smiled, wrapping your own pinkie around his while he tugged you closer to him for another kiss.

Bed Time
Tumblr media
Balancing on the balls of your feet, you shutter at the feeling of your bare feet on the cold floor as you quietly float down the darkened hallway toward the muffled voices coming from lone bedroom at the end of the trailer. The bedroom was once adorned by heavy metal posters, junk-littered dressers, clothes thrown haphazardly around the space, and an alarming mold stain on the corner of the ceiling. Now it was filled with rainbows drawn on loose paper, barbie doll houses, and stuffed animals matted with the love of the little girl who cherished them since her arrival into his life only four years ago (the mold stain was subsequently evicted). The soft glow of the lamp on the bedside table spilled through the small opening of the door only half shut by the ever attentive father who lovingly settled his firecracker daughter into her small twin bed. Once you reached the door, you gently placed your hand on the wood of the door and sucked in a small breath, holding it there with lips bitten underneath your teeth. As you peered into the room, scanning over the dresser immediately across from you which has mismatched small, frilly socks laid out on top, waiting on the long lost promise of being paired with their mate, your eyes fell onto a scene that threatened to make your heart burst.
From your vantage point, you marveled at the sight of Eddie knelt at the side of his daughter's bed. Not having changed out of his mechanic coveralls yet, he has his right arm lovingly draped over his daughter's small body, which is tucked snuggly in her white fluffy comforter. Her wild, dark curls, a spitting image of her father's, are loosely laying around her head resting on her pink pillow case with frilly trim. Her brow is held in sorrow as she laments at the chain on her tricycle that broke earlier that day on her walk with Grampa Wayne. You watch the movement in his frame under his work clothes as Eddie soothes a hand over her forehead, guiding it back to the apex of her skull as her reassures her, his frizzy curls brushing his shoulder and back as he gently nods his head in agreement as he speaks.
"Baby, I know you're sad, but Daddy will fix it tomorrow morning. We'll have it working good as new in no time," he coos as she releases some of the tension in her face to behold him with trust and comfort etched into her big, doe eyes. A look that could he swore could break her old man's heart. You had intended to let out the breath you were holding as you heard him speak, but after hearing his promise to his baby, it came out more as a pained, pitiful sigh. Eddie turned his upper body slightly so his head could face the doorway as his eyes landed on you with a look of mild surprise to discover that he was being watched. You offered a small, shy smile and brought the cuff of his your oversized hoodie to your mouth to hide behind it. The smaller Munson flickered her eyes over to you and a toothy smile stretched across her face. The same smile reflected on her dear old dad's face as they both regarded you.
"I just wanted to say good night again, Princess," you offered quietly as your cheeks burned to a light shade of pink. You had never intended to be caught. You just wanted to capture the sweet moment between the two people who had so quickly and wholly stole your heart that day in the park some months ago. The little girl brought her small hand flat to her puckered lips and sent an exaggerated kiss into the air in your direction. You huffed a small laugh and returned it to her in double. Still smiling at the interaction, Eddie turned his attention back to his daughter and leaned into her face. "Alright, give Daddy some kisses and then its off to sleep," he said as he plants a sloppy kiss to her cheek and she squeals out a laugh while wrapping her tiny arms around his neck. Once she releases, Eddie reaches to the bedside lamp and clicks it off leaving the room lit only by a small nightlight in the corner opposite her bed. He rises and makes his way toward the door as you take a few shy steps backward into the hallway to allow him to exit the bedroom.
He pulls the door so it is almost shut, but open enough so he can hear if her small voice carries his name should she find herself in need of him during the night. The small sliver of light that peaks from the door lands on you, and Eddie slightly cocks his head to the side as he takes in your form. You're standing there watching him as he as corrects himself to face you when he lets go of the door knob. There is a shyness to your posture, as you hold the cuff of the hoodie to your lips again with your chin dipped down to meet your fist bunched underneath the fabric. You're looking up at him through your lashes with a look he can't quite place as he takes a small step toward you to get a better look in the darkness. Then he notices the shift of your thighs slightly pressing together. He quirks an eyebrow as his eyes flick back to study your face briefly again to discover the hint of desire etched in it. A slow smirk begins to appear on his lips. He takes more steps toward you and as soon as he can, he reaches his hand underneath the hem of the hoodie as slides his fingers gently across the expanse of skin right above where your sweatpants end near your hips as he closes in on you. His hands caress your sides as he snakes his arms around your waist, until they find home on the small of your back and he suddenly pulls you forward into him. Your chest collides with his as he stares down his nose at your face. In the moment, you brace your hands on his biceps and let out a whispered squeal as you adjust to the new proximity to him. You return him a smile for a few sweet seconds before he speaks.
"Penny for your thoughts?" he offered lifting his eyebrows, as the grin fell from his face and was replaced by a poorly constructed false look of innocence. You rolled your eyes as your smiled widened knowing you've been caught. You slid your hands from their place his biceps up his arms and shoulders until they met on the back of his neck bringing your faces closer so you can speak in hushed tones. You scrunched your face in confusion trying to hide the blush and countered, "I have no idea what your talking about." A devilishly handsome smile painted his face once more as he waited in silence for you to break under his stare. You sighed off your façade and pointed your chin down so you didn't have to meet the burning curiosity of his gaze. "Once I say it, I will never hear the end of it," you said as you smiled at your feet. Eddie never made you feel embarrassed about anything, but he did love to tease you a bit to get you worked up. It's not his fault you look so adorable when you're flustered. He removed a hand from your back and brought it out from under the hoodie to slot it between your bodies so he could gently grab your chin between his thumb and index finger to bring your eyes back to his. As he did, you quickly shut your eyes and screwed your face up to resemble something akin to pain as you prepared to say the words. You knew he wouldn't let it go until you did. Especially if it was something that sparked lust in you. Especially if it was for him.
Heaving your shoulders up to your ears with your eyes remaining closed, you let out yet another sigh, this time as dramatically as you could muster. You inhaled just as theatrically causing him to stifle a laugh, as you parted your lips and released, "Hearing you call yourself 'Daddy' does more for me than I want to admit." You tentatively opened one eye to take in his reaction to your admission. Eddie's smile had become more open mouthed with his tongue now sticking out slightly to the side to rest on his upper teeth as a look of amusement danced over his face. Oh, he liked this development. You groaned, defeated and slumped your head against his chest as he let out a quiet chuckle as to not alert all that slumbered in the silence of the trailer. Using his hand to maneuver your face to look up at him again, he titled his head to the side as he said in a low, thick voice, "Is it time for Daddy to get you to bed now?".

Can you do like dad eddie since it’s Father’s Day and maybe like him having such a Goofy little baby girl like maybe they have a fun day together?
yes of course! i've been thinking about this all day actually. this concept has been rattling around in my brain, very loudly. here's some singledad!eddie with his little girl at her first concert.
Tumblr media
it was 1993. the crowd rumbled as the opening number started. to say eddie was excited would be an understatement. he was bouncing up and down on his heels and shouting at the top of his lungs. the way he was reacting was fitting as this was his first time seeing DIO ever, and they opened with 'stand up and shout'. hearing the guitars rift on stage with the bright lights was so intoxicating.
eddie was careful in the crowd, making sure to stay away from the men that were moshing a little to hard and shoving into each other in good fun as the tempo carried their movements, as if the drummer was guiding them to move all crazy and brash himself. eddie remembered when he could do that. honestly he missed it.
but now he was making new memories. the little girl on his shoulders kicked her legs to the beat on his chest as he held her thighs tightly to make sure she was on tight. she couldn't see from the ground and he had to be sure she would remember these moments. she was only four but he had read in some parenting book that kids develop their first memories at the ripe age of three. he was sure she would remember something as big as this.
he couldn't tell but the lights from the stage dazzled in her eyes. they were glued to the stage as ronnie james dio himself sung the same lyrics she would hear her daddy sing when he made her breakfast. it was loud but the bright yellow headphones she had on her ears protected her from any hearing damage. her dad.. not so much.
after many many songs and an encore eddie pulled his bundle of joy down from his neck and to rest on his hip. he pulled her headphones off as the sound of the crowd went from a loud rumble to just a busy chatter. "you like that, sweetheart?" she smiled at him and laughed as he nuzzled his cheek into hers with adoration. "you play guitar just like them!" she unknowingly complimented him. eddie chuckled. "yeah? you think so?"
eddie walked both of them towards the merch table, needing to add a new band tee to his ever growing collection, his daughter was squirming in his grasp. eddie timidly put her down so she could walk herself, not without him grabbing her hand almost painfully tightly so he wouldn't lose her in the crowd. she giggled and waved at all the people she passed. all of them looking like different variations of her own father. she looked up to him and pulled the hem of his battle vest. the same one he wore during his high school years. "are these all your friends?" eddie smiled and shook his head at her. "something like that, sure thing kiddo". he tussled her straight hair into a mess with his palm.
after a long walk they had finally made it out of the stadium, though the crowd had dissipated he still held her close as she stomped her feet in a tempo of a song stuck in her head from hearing it live. eddie smiled watching her, now dressed in a new tshirt that was his size. over her clothes and so big that it looked like a dress.
eddie was convinced he would have to pry it off of her when they got home, telling her it wasn't appropriate for her to wear to preschool because of the large devil named 'murray' on the front. she had gotten a lot of complements from her dad's "friends" as they were leaving the venue along side them. they had been shouting that she looked like a rockstar herself. her eyes would light up as she blushed and jumped up and down.
when they finally reached the van and eddie packed her into the backseat she looked up at him as he helped her with her seatbelt. "can we go back soon, daddy?"
eddie smiled, "you bet your ass we can, sweetheart".

Once the weekend arrived, you found yourself dressing a little more casually. It was just a cozy movie date, and you really didn’t feel the pressure of all the first date, first impressions thing anymore. It was starting to feel comfortable, like the two of you were getting into a routine.
You wore jeans and the band tee shirt you’d bought at the concert, tied your hair up, and applied a little bit of makeup. You threw your stuff in your purse and put on some cute earrings before grabbing your comfortable white sneakers and heading out to your living room to sit and put them on.
Pencil hopped up in your lap as you were trying your shoe, needing attention. You chuckled and tried to finish tying the knot, moving your arms and head around the cat, but she was insistent. You sighed and gave up, sitting back and petting her.
Eddie knocked on your door, and you attempted to get up, but Pencil had you trapped, so you just yelled, “There’s a key under the mat!” You heard Eddie move the mat, struggling with the lock, then walking into your house.
He walked in and saw you with one shoe on, half tied, and Pencil on your lap, holding you down. He chuckled and walked over to you, sitting next to you on couch. “I’m trapped.” You sighed, petting Pencil’s back.
He smiled, “Looks torturous.”
You leaned over and kissed his cheek, holding Pencil to you, “I may have to take a raincheck. She won’t even let me put on my shoes.”
“Here, let me help.” He hummed, moving off the couch and tying the shoe you had on, before moving to put the other shoe on your other foot. He tied it, then moved back up to you and placed a sweet kiss on your lips.
“Thanks.” You smiled. “You’re going to have to help me detach her from me, you know.” You said, trying to pry her off of you and hearing her meow sadly, holding on with her claws.
Eddie laughed at the cat’s reaction, “You really weren’t kidding.”
You nodded, sitting up and feeling her finally tumble off of your chest and on to your lap, which made you move quickly and get off the couch while she wasn’t holding on. You raised your hands excitedly, “Success!”
He stood up with you, taking the opportunity where your arms were already up to wrap his arms around your waist and pick you up, causing a surprised laugh to bubble up from your chest, holding on to him as he spun you around.
“Let’s go before Pencil attacks again!” He beamed, still holding you up. You were really surprised at how easily he held you, but you accepted it.
“Get my purse!”
He bend down, still holding you, and grabbed it off of your coffee table before carrying you out the door while you giggled in his arms. He set you in the passenger seat of his van, leaning in and kissing you passionately.
You kissed him back, holding him close and tangling your hands in his hair. His excitement made you giddy like a girl with her first crush. Once he broke the kiss, smiling like a madman, you kicked your feet up on his dash, “Come on, Romeo. Take me on a date.”
Tumblr media
The date was fun. Eddie took you to the movies you’d been at a few days before, and the two of you giggled and whispered throughout the film. The two of you shared a slushee and cuddled up the entire time. It was really nice.
Once the move let out, the two of you were pretty hungry, so he took you through a drive-thru and the two of you were currently sitting in the back of his van, eating fries and talking.
Eddie had been ranting about the plot of the movie since you’d asked him if he liked it. “No, what I’m saying is that they totally shouldn’t have ended up together in the end. Not that I’m not a sucker for romance or anything, but like, the characters really weren’t compatible. Like, the entire film was spent showing how much the two of them hate each other and how different they are, and suddenly something bad happens and they’re all like, ‘oooh I love you so much’! Like, it just doesn’t make sense. I think they should’ve maybe put aside their differences and like, gotten through it with each other, but I think it was kinda dumb to put them in a relationship. Totally took me out of the experience, you know?”
You giggled and nodded, eating a fry, “Yeah, I get what you mean. But did you like the movie?”
He cocked his head to the side, “Did I not answer the question?”
You laughed, “No, Eddie, not really.”
“Oh, well I liked it. Just wish it ended differently. The end was just kinda tropey.”
You hummed and leaned against the side of his van, “I agree.” You ate a bite of your burger, swallowed, then took a sip of your soda, “You should be a film critic. I could listen to you talk about it for hours.” You informed him, a small smile gracing the corners of your mouth.
“Well, I’m sure you could, but I doubt anyone else would want to hear what I have to say about that stuff.” He whispered after taking a gulp of his drink.
“Yeah, maybe it’s just because I like you. Is that tropey?” You teased, a sly smile on your face as you leaned towards him a little.
“Oh, totally. But I can put up with it for you, angel.” His smile more cocky than yours, leaning in your way.
Before he had the chance to kiss you, you leaned back against the car again, “‘preciate it, old buddy old pal.”
He looked shocked for a moment, then scoffed, “Not like I wanted to kiss you anyways.” He huffed, sitting back and pouting like a little kid. “And old buddy? I thought we were more than that.”
“Yeah? Why don’t you come show me exactly what we are, Eddie?” You asked, shoving your food aside, looking at him through hooded lids, suggestion heavy in your tone.
He raised an eyebrow, then quickly forgot about his food, scrambling over to kiss you quickly, placing a hand on the back of your neck to hold you close.
You hummed against his lips and lazily wrapped your ams around his shoulders, letting your lips slot together like two perfect puzzle pieces.
He held you close, his tongue slowly meeting yours and not caring that either of you tasted like fast food and soda. His mind was racing as he kissed you though. Your statements, the question of what the two of you were.. he felt like he knew the answer, but he needed you to know. You were his girlfriend… right? He felt silly having to define it; it felt like he was thinking like a high schooler as he kissed you, but neither of you had stated, what he felt, was the obvious.
You pulled away, needing oxygen, and you made eye contact, “Are you okay?” You asked softly, seeing that he seemed deep in thought.
“You’re my girlfriend.” He stated, still in a daze. His statement seemed to snap him out of it after a moment though, and he blushed and stuttered out, “Ah- well. I mean, if you want to be. I should’ve asked first. But maybe that’s stupid? We’re adults, so like it feels weird to just ask, but-“
“I’m your girlfriend.” You giggled, cutting him off and seeing the palpable relief wash over him.
“Sorry.” He laughed, “I’m not very good at this.”
“Yeah, maybe you aren’t, but I think it’s endearing, so you get a pass.” You whispered, leaning in and kissing him sweetly. You felt him smile against your lips, then he broke it, “And I’m your boyfriend.” He giggled.
“Yeah, I guess you are, boyfriend.” You chuckled, tucking his hair behind your ear. The word felt nice coming out of your mouth, like you should’ve said it earlier.
He sat back and grabbed his soda, keeping his legs tangled with yours as the two of you finished your food, joking and kissing for hours.

The rest of the summer passed easily. You and Eddie went on dates at least once a week, enjoying each other’s company and getting to know each other on a deeper level.
He told you about his darker past, and you opened up about yours, telling him about your last relationship. He’d said he wanted to punch the guy, and you laughed and said that you’d beaten him to it, just once, before you left. You told him that you were a cheerleader in high school, and he said that you would’ve never noticed him, which you found hard to believe considering the stories his friends told you about how he used to be. The conversations flowed easily.
You’d taken Sage out a few times, relieving Eddie of his responsibilities and Sage of her boredom. She loved when you did- the two of you got your nails done, you’d been to the park, and you’d taken her out for lunch a few times. She absolutely adored you, and made sure to tell you every opportunity she got.
You helped Eddie shop for her school supplies last week, letting him know that, while the school supply list was long and some things may have seemed a little excessive, teachers needed every single thing on the list. You’d bought some for yourself too, knowing that not every parent could afford the supplies.
And before you knew it, the first day of school arrived once more, but this time, Sage was down the hall. You kind of missed her being in your class, but you knew it was part of life.
That morning, Eddie got Sage up early and sat her at the table, handing her a plate of pancakes and sitting across from her, sipping his coffee.
“You excited for your first day of first grade, kiddo?” He asked with a tired smile.
Sage poked at her food, trying to stab a small piece of pancake with her fork, her face focused. “I wish I didn’t have a new teacher.” She mumbled.
“Well, your old one is just down the hall, so you can see her whenever you want.” He smiled.
“But what if my new teacher isn’t nice? What if she doesn’t take me to the movies?” She asked, not really understanding that the way your relationship with her wasn’t typical.
He chuckled at that, “Well, Sage, your new teacher probably won’t..” he sighed.
She frowned, “Why not?”
“Well, your new teacher and I aren’t really friends. Not in a bad way- your old one and I are just close. And she’s friends with everyone else- Robin and Uncle Steve and Nancy. That’s not usually the case. You just got lucky with the first one.”
She thought for a moment, eating her pancakes, sticky syrup somehow getting on her hands even though she ate with a fork. “Okay..” she said, her voice muffled from the food in her mouth.
Eddie got up and kissed her forehead, then left the room to set out her clothes for the day. When he came back, Sage had a smile on her face that he knew well: she had an idea, and most likely, it was a mischievous one.
“Daddy?” She asked, using both hands do take a sip of her orange juice.
He squinted his eyes, looking at her as he got a paper towel and wetted it at the sink to wipe the sticky residue from her hands. “What?”
She grabbed her fork, “You should marry her.” She smiled confidently, shoveling pancakes into her mouth after she said what was probably the most shocking thing he’d heard in a while.
He looked over at Sage, confused and shocked. Did she know? Or was she just suggesting it? “Sage…” he whispered, walking over and sitting in the chair next to her and wiping off her hands and her fork. “What makes you say that?”
She swallowed and turned to look at Eddie, “She’s nice to me. And she’s pretty. And you need a wife. All my friends daddies have a wife.” An idea popped into her head, “Oh! And you can get married in a castle!”
He chuckled and sat back, contemplating telling her the situation for a long moment. Sage seemed open to the idea, obviously. And you two had been together for over two months at this point. You’d established the relationship; you we’re officially dating. Plus, half of the town knew, so it might be hard for her to avoid hearing at school. He’d much rather tell her himself, rather than having someone else break the news and confuse her.
“Well, it’ll be a while before we get married.” He said softly, hesitating for a moment before continuing, “But we are dating.”
Sage gasped dramatically, making Eddie thankful she’d swallowed what she’d had in her mouth beforehand, “You are?!” She asked excitedly.
“Yeah, kiddo. Is that okay?” He asked, waiting for her reaction before getting excited. He hoped his daughter would love the idea.
“Yes!” She whisper-yelled, squealing and shaking her fork like a barbarian.
Eddie laughed, “Good.” He took the fork from her hands so she wouldn’t hurt herself.
“And you’re gonna get married? In a castle? So that I can be a real princess?” She asked, looking up at him hopefully.
He looked down at her fondly, “Maybe one day. Not right now, though. We’re still pretty new at this.”
She sighed, “Well I wanna be a princess, so you’d better marry her soon.” She said, crossing her arms.
“You already are a princess, Sage. Ready to go get dressed in your princess dress for school?”
She nodded and held her arms out for Eddie to pick her up, and he happily obliged.

On the first day of school at Hawkins Elementary, it was tradition for the parents to walk their kids in, no matter the grade.
You were flitting around your classroom, getting the last minute details ready when parents slowly started to fill the hallways and your room. You got straight to your usual first day duties: taking photos, distracting kids, and handing out the first parent newsletters.
Before he could stop her, Sage ran down the hallway and into your room and hugged you tightly around your legs, beaming, “You’re daddy’s girlfriend.” She said excitedly, looking up at you.
Your eyebrows raised in shock, and you looked up at Eddie, who was standing in your doorway a little out of breath from chasing her, “Sorry, I couldn’t stop her.” He chuckled.
You bent and picked up Sage, resting her on your hip and walking back over to Eddie. You gave him a look that asked, ‘you told her?’ And he shrugged, whispering “Yeah. Figured it would be better to hear it from me rather than a parent or teacher.”
You smiled softly, looking over at Sage, “Yes, I am. Now, you gotta go to class.” You told her, handing her over to Eddie as she whined.
“But I wanna be in your class.”
“Ms. Ashburn is really nice, I promise.” You smile, “Give her a chance. She has some exciting things planned for you this year.”
She tucked her head into Eddie’s neck and he smiled, “I’ll see you later.” He hummed, leaning over and kissing your cheek before taking Sage down to her class.
You turned and focused on yours, ignoring some judgy looks from a few of the parents in the room. You really couldn’t care less about their opinion. You were happy with Eddie. And now, Sage knew, so you felt that weight come off of your shoulders.
You had a good feeling about this school year.

don't let me drown (part two!)
FINALLY got around to making a part two to this! should i put it on AO3 maybe? lmk!!!
PART ONE, [PART TWO]
Eddie hated the smell of chlorine.
They had decided to come in that Friday after Max’s camp to tour before her first class, not only to ease Eddie's nerves, but to keep Max’s excited momentum. The entire aquatic center smelled like it, and he could tell it would stick to his clothes. They had only just walked through the front door, Max bouncing with each step, her excitement obvious.
A woman with short strawberry blonde hair sat at the front desk, typing intently while almost glaring at the computer screen in front of her. As Eddie and Max approached, she quickly glanced their way.
“Hi! Give me one moment please, our system is being all wonky.” She aggressively pressed enter on her keyboard a few times with a scowl before turning her attention to them.
“Alrighty, sorry about that! What can I do for you?”
Eddie laughed lightly before responding. “It’s okay, no worries! Uh- I called earlier this week about signing Max up for lessons, and we wanted to see if we could get a quick tour before Monday?”
Max popped her head up, staring at the woman intently. “I’m gonna learn how to swim, I think!” She said with a huge grin.
“Ah, you must be Max!” Robin said, matching Max's grin before turning to Eddie. “And you must be Eddie! I’m Robin! Nice to meet you both!” She glanced at her watch. “Hold on one sec, I’m gonna grab someone to watch the desk so I can give you a tour.” She got up from her chair and went through a door, presumably to the staff room, before a short redhead emerged to take her place.
Robin came through a side door and looped around to meet them. “That’s Vickie, our other front desk operator and also one of our lifeguards, when needed!” Vickie gave a short smile and wave, turning to the computer.
“You guys can follow me!” Robin turned and walked towards what seemed to be a small café. “This is our Snack Shack! There's smoothies, soda, water, and gatorade to drink and all sorts of different snacks as well as hotdogs and hamburgers.”
Eddie nodded along, giving a short wave to the bored looking staff member at the counter. Robin turned and walked past the front desk to a stairwell. “This is the stairs to the pools. The locker rooms are to the right at the bottom. We’ll pass the instructional pool, but I’ll show you that one last.”
As they descended the stairs, they passed a doorway with a few parents loitering around, going through a bigger glass door to a huge pool.
“This is our competition pool for our swim team, but it's also used for open lap swim when there isn’t practice or a competition.” They breezed past, Eddie struggling to keep up with Robin and Max while he marveled at the size.
They passed through another doorway with both glass doors propped open, revealing another pool. This one was smaller, but not by much, and had a huge inflatable slide in it while being full of children.
“This is our program pool! It can be rented out for parties, like it is now, but it's also used for the more advanced swim lessons, open swim, and the junior swim team. People can also rent inflatables for parties from us, hence the giant slide!” Robin said, gesturing wildly.
Max gasped and tugged on Eddie's pant leg. “Dad, can I please have my next birthday party here? Please? Pretty please?” She begged with the biggest puppy dog eyes.
Eddie sighed loudly, Robin giggling quietly. “We’ll see, bug. You have to learn how to swim first.” Max nodded, pulling away with a determined look.
“Can we keep going, Miss Robin?” She asked, already walking towards the next set of doors.
At that, Robin gave a hearty laugh and continued walking. “Of course, Miss Max!” She pushed open the metal doors to an outdoor pool. “The last pool before the instructional pool, outdoors! This one is for private adult lessons, training, and open swim. Definitely our most popular for open swim.” Robin continued walking parallel to the building, revealing yet another set of doors.
“This place is huge.” Eddie muttered, earning a laugh from Robin.
“The biggest and the best! The outdoor pool actually opened just last year, so it's attracted a lot more people,” She leaned towards Eddie to whisper, “which was our goal.”
Eddie looked down at Max, immediately melting at her awestruck face. “What do you think so far, Max? You like it?”
Max turned towards her father, eyes lit up in astonishment. “I love it. I love you, Dad. Thank you!” She rushed towards Eddie to give his legs the biggest hug she could muster.
“I love you more, sunshine. C’mon, let's see where you’ll be learning!” He said, patting her head.
Robin stood by the doors, waiting patiently for their little pow wow. “Miss Max, would you like to open the doors for the big reveal?”
Immediately, Max rushed to the doors and pushed with all her might, revealing the instructional pool. As the group made their way inside, Eddie couldn't help but notice the prettiest man he’d ever seen in his life standing by the side of the pool in swim shorts with the center logo and a towel draped around his neck, surrounded by small children.
If this is the instructor, I am definitely going to sit in on every lesson, Eddie thought to himself.
“So this is our last stop, where you’ll be taking your lessons!” Robin said as Max looked around.
“‘S so small…” The girl said, a hint of disappointment in her voice.
Robin kneeled down to Max’s level. “Well, Max, you’re small. And in order to keep you safe while you learn, the pool has to be smaller so we can watch out for you. Once you learn and get bigger, you’ll be able to swim in the big pools!”
Max nodded, walking around the pool as if to inspect it. “M’kay, I guess.”
Robin stood up, following her. She cupped her hands around her mouth to shout, “Coach Harrington!”
The small crowd of children and lingering parents had dispersed, leaving Coach Harrington sitting in a metal folding chair. He winced at the sudden loud noise. “Geez, Robin, there's no need to shout so loud! You're like eight feet away!”
Eddie had never heard such a fitting voice. It was as handsome as him, slightly deep and very expressive.
Robin only grinned as she approached. “You’ve got some newcomers to meet.” The coach stood, glancing behind her, meeting Eddie's eyes (and turning a touch pink in the face) before looking at Max.
“Hello! I’m Coach Harrington, what’s your name?” He said, crouching a bit.
Max stuck out her hand for a handshake. “I’m Max! ‘N I’m gonna learn how to swim!”
Coach Harrington laughed lightly and shook her hand, despite it being larger by far. “Very nice to meet you, Max! I can tell you’re excited! I can’t wait to see how you do!”
He stood up, meeting the man's eyes once again. Eddie stuck his hand out in a similar fashion, trying to hide his slight blush. “I’m Eddie, Max’s dad. Nice to meet you, Coach Harrington.”
“Call me, Steve. Nice to meet you, too, Eddie.” Steve said with a small smile, grasping Eddie’s hand in a firm shake. His hands were warm for someone who just got out of a pool, and almost completely dry. Eddie stared at their hands dumbly before pulling away and shoving his hands in his pocket. Close up, he could see the abs, the chest hair, and the moles littering his face and chest. He wondered how far they went before shaking his head slightly as if to shake the thought away.
Robin clapped, startling the two men. “Alrighty! So, Max here will be in the 1A class three times a week. Now that you guys have met, we can head back upstairs!” She gave Steve an intense look before heading towards the door to the stairwell. Max and Eddie followed, with a final “I’m gonna blow your socks off, Coach Harrington!” That earned her a laugh from the coach that warmed Eddie from the inside out.
As they made their way to the front desk, Eddie turned to Robin. “Is… is he gonna be the instructor every time?”
She looked at him and smiled knowingly. “For now, yes. I think I mentioned our other instructor being on leave, and he’s still got a bit before he comes back. Steve is great though, promise.”
Eddie blushed, covering his face with some of his hair. Returning to the front desk, Robin turned to Max.
“You think you’re ready for Monday?” She asked, smirking at the child.
Max was undeterred, nodding determinedly once again. “I’m gonna swim so good. I know it.”
Turning to Eddie, Robin asked, “How about you? Ready for Monday?”
Eddie nodded as well, though with more hesitancy.
“Ready as I’ll ever be, I guess.”

here's the most random sneak peek i could find as a treat:
not edited so don't look at my grammar
Adrie held up a brown teddy with one glass bead eye slightly larger than the other after surgery was performed on him to replace the one he lost, and said, “This is Mr. Bear.” “Nice to meet you, Mr. Bear,” you said, using your best Children’s Television Program presenter voice to entertain her. You threw a smile over your shoulder at the silliness, and Eddie was already looking at you, warm brown eyes shining with the same fondness as yours. “And he’s married to Mrs. Froggy.” “Wow, a bear and a frog.” You nodded, impressed. “I guess true love knows no bounds.”

Being Weird Is Cool
(SingleDad!Eddie Munson x SingleMom!Reader)
Summary: You and your son are new to Hawkins and meet Eddie and his daughter at the park. WK: 1.7K
Warnings: None really, this is just a fluffy sweet little self indulgent meet cute. Eddie and Reader are in their mid 20s and their kids are around 5 going into Kindergarten. Modern AU. Reader is implied to be alternative but it doesn’t have to be read that way.🩵 But as always, my blog is still 18+
A/N: So this is just a cute little blurb that came to me. I always see single dad Eddie but I hardly ever see single mom reader so I thought this would be cuteee. My son has a speech condition and I never see kids with special needs in fics so this is just something small n cute n close to my heart. Maybe I’ll turn it into a series of blurbs about these four, we will see. If anyone has any ideas/requests for these four I’d totally be open to writing them. 🤭🖤Part 2 - My Masterlist - Series Masterlist
“Excuse me, is that your child?”
You looked up from your phone, hearing the voice of an irritated sounding woman, ready to defend your son at a moment's notice. But when you looked up she wasn’t talking to you, she was standing in front of the man who was sitting on the bench next to yours. A scowl on her face, her hands on her hips, and a pudgy little boy with tears in his eyes and chocolate smudged all over him by her side. She tilted her head towards the little girl across the playground that had been playing with your son since you got here. She was very clearly this man’s daughter by the way the unruly brown curls on their heads matched. She was sitting on the ground next to your son with her hand on his shoulder, seemingly comforting him.
“Yeah, she’s mine. What’s up?” The man sounded annoyed, rightfully so.
“Well, she just made my son cry.” The woman scoffed.
He raised an eyebrow at her, looking at your kids then back at her.
“What happened?”
“Apparently she yelled in his face and pushed him over, you really need to teach your daughter how to behave.” The woman’s dirty blonde ponytail that was so tight it looked like it was going to make her eyes bulge he out of her head waved from side to side as she spoke.
“Charlotte! Can you come over here please?” The man called to his daughter, waving her over.
You watched as she stood, dusting wood chips off her black white colored dress before reaching her hand out to your son. She pulled him behind her as she walked over with a determined look on her face.
“Daddy! That little boy was mean to my friend! He told him he was weird and was mocking fun of his voice!” She stomped a little black booted foot and pointed her finger towards the boy in question.
“Charlotte… honey, did you push him over?” He asked her as he stood to his feet, crouching down so he was eye level with her.
At this point you had fully turned your body in their direction, ready to intervene.
“Oli, are you okay baby?” You asked him gently.
“Mommy!!!” He ran over to you and wrapped his arms around your legs, burying his face into your knees.
“What happened honey?” You ran your fingers through his hair and he buried his face further into you. You look over at the man beside you, who looks at you apologetically before turning back to his daughter.
“Char… did you push that boy over there?”
“Yes! But-“
“Hey, no buts, okay? We don’t push people no matter what they do, it's not okay to push.” He told her and he gently rested a large ringed hand on her little shoulder.
“Okay daddy…” she looked down at her little feet with her hands behind her back, bashful.
“Now, do you want to tell me what happened? Calmly.” He titled his head so she was looking him in the eyes again and she pouted. “Come on baby, we can’t fix it if we don’t know.”
“Her PUSHED me! I was just trying play with them and she yelled and pushed!” The little boy spoke up, pointing at her from behind his moms legs.
“No! No! Mean!” Your son, Oliver, who was normally very soft spoken and shy raised his head from your knees to yell at the other boy.
“Okay whoa whoa whoa, let’s everybody calm down.” You looked down at Oli and smiled, rubbing soft circles on his back to try and keep him calm.
“Hey sweetie, your name is Charlotte, right?” You asked her.
“Mhm” She stuck her bottom lip out and nodded.
“Can you tell us what happened please?”
“Yes! That kid!” She pointed and glared at the chocolate covered boy “was being mean to MY new friend! He was mocking fun of his voice and calling him weird! But that’s just not nice!”
It didn’t take you long to figure out what she meant, Oliver was a late talker and very shy. He didn’t talk much and when he did it was only to people he was comfortable with. This wasn’t the first and probably wouldn’t be the last time this happened. Most parents didn’t take the time to teach their kids that everyone is different so you’ve had to take it upon yourself to explain it to them on more than one occasion.
“So that other little boy was being mean to Oli about his voice and you stood up for him, right?”
“Yes! I didn’t want him to play with us and he wouldn’t go away and kept mocking fun of him! so I told him my dad said being weird is cool and I MADE him go away!” She was still stomping her little foot and pointing her little finger at the kid and you had to hold in a laugh at how cute she was.
“Well thank you for standing up for him honey, that’s very sweet of you. But I don’t think your daddy wants you to push people even if they’re mean, right?” You look over to her dad and make eye contact, silently asking for backup.
“Yeah baby, it’s very nice of you to stand up for your friend but I want you to apologize to that little boy for pushing him over, okay?” He put his hand on her back and tilted his head toward the boy and his mother.
“Well is him gonna say sorry? To my friend?” She narrowed her eyes at her father and looked between him and the other child.
“He has nothing to say sorry for! You pushed him! And maybe his mother needs to teach him how to communicate better!” She definitely should not have fucking said that.
“Fucking excuse me???” You stood up and walked past Oliver and straight up to the woman’s pinched face. “We were trying to do the right thing and teach our kids that hitting is never okay but if you want to play it like that?? Okay. How about you teach your son how to treat people? That everyone’s different and it’s not okay to just talk down to people because you don’t understand them? How about you wipe his fucking face and get the fuck out of mine before I show them that maybe hitting isn’t so bad after all.” You practically growled, your eyes boring into hers.
“You people are fucking insane, who let people like you even have children??” She gasped before turning on her heel and leaving the park, dragging her son behind her.
“Fucking bitch.” You scoffed, turning to Oliver and crouching down in front of him. “You okay baby?”
“Yeah mama, okay.” He smiled at you and gave you a thumbs up.
“That was fucking awesome.” The man next to you chuckled and slapped his thigh. “Her face!! She couldn’t even believe you were talking to her like that!!” He laughed.
You looked over at him and smiled, this was the first time you were really looking at him and wow. He was beautiful. You had already noticed his hair but now that you’re looking directly at him you can see his pretty brown eyes, and plush pink lips. When he smiles you see two cute little dimples appear on each side of his mouth and he’s dressed really cute too. Ripped jeans, old band tee, beat up sneakers and a leather jacket. Damn.
“I promise you that is not the first time I’ve dealt with a woman like that and I’m positive it will not be the last.” You chuckled.
“Well you handled it like a goddess, if I was a woman I might’ve punched her.”
“Well I absolutely wanted to.” You both started busting up laughing.
“I’m Eddie, by the way, and you already met Charlotte.” He smiled at you and extended his hand, you took it and told him your name in return.
“And this is Oliver, who you already kinda sorta not really met.” You gestured to your son and Charlotte came bounding over.
“Oli! You want play with me still?” She smiled big at him.
“Yep! Mhm!” He clapped.
“Gotta catch meeeee then!!!!” She ran off towards the playground and he went chasing after her.
“You’re a good dad, not a lot of kids take the time to understand that other kids are different, just because they aren’t taught that at home. You clearly teach her well.” You said with a smile.
“Yeah, I try to teach her that everyone’s different. I mean look at me, it’s not like I had the easiest time growing up, or even now other parents judge me and look down on me for being a single dad and well, just being me. I never want her to feel like that.” He watched his daughter run after your son with a fond smile.
“Yeah” You looked down at your own ripped jean shorts and tights and smiled. “Yeah, I think I get that.”
“Are you guys new in town? I haven’t seen you around and I think I’ve seen everyone in this town at least once”
“Oh, yeah, me and him just moved here last week so we don’t really know anyone yet. I’m hoping once the kids start school next month he will have a bit of an easier time making friends.” You sighed. “He’s just really shy, he has a hard time talking and he gets really nervous.”
“Well, it looks like he already has one friend.” He smiled at you and pointed towards the playground where Oli was pushing Charlotte on the swing.
“Looks like it.” You looked over at Eddie and smiled.
“And that goes for you too, you know? You have one friend now too, if you want.” He smiled at you hopefully, those cute dimples showing.
“Yeah? I think I’d like that.” You felt your face warm when you smiled back at him.
“We were going to get ice cream after this, do you guys want to come? It’s just down the street we usually walk from here.”
“That actually sounds really nice Eddie, thank you.”
“KIDS!!! Ice cream!!?!!” He yelled the magic words and huge grins spread across both their faces as they came running full speed towards you.
Maybe Hawkins wouldn’t be so bad.

─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
The first time Eddie Munson met you…he didn't exactly like you. You just weren't his type in any sense of the word - not his type of friend, his type of girl, or his type of associate. He never would have thought that the two of you would have any sort of relationship. It would actually have been laughable to him, if someone had told him you’d be anything more than a bi-yearly presence in his life.
But here you were, the sweet, kind dental assistant that greeted him and his son as they walked into the new dental practice. As soon as Eddie had completed the new patient paperwork and was checked in, you walked up front and called out his son’s name.
The first thing Eddie had noticed was how pretty you were - he could own up to that but the second thing he noticed was how kind and gentle you were with his little boy. Jamie Munson was a small, shy little boy who had been terrified at the idea of going to the dentist. But you had some sort of magical power because the boy relaxed and came willingly with you, Eddie in tow. He had to hand it to you; you had a way with Jamie…and with him.
When it turned out that Jamie was having a bit of an issue with some of his permanent teeth that were coming in, he quickly realized that he was going to be seeing more of you. For some odd, unexplainable reason, thrilled and terrified him. There was something so magnetic about you that it made his stomach flutter with butterflies. It didn’t help that Jamie had practically fallen in love with you and thoroughly enjoyed telling anyone and everyone about the nice lady at the dentist.
To top it all off, Eddie found himself drawn to you as well, finding any and every excuse to talk to you whenever he was in the office. And to his surprise - and yours - he asked you out. It was fumbled and awkward and sweet, all Eddie and priceless. When you’d said yes without hesitation, Eddie had been shocked. When you told him that you had thought about asking him out as well, he was sure he was dreaming.
When you showed up to what turned out to be the first date of many, he was convinced he was living in a sweet, lavender haze.
But it was real, and you were real, and before either of you knew it - it had all become a vivid, beautiful reality.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Your stomach was in knots as you waited for Eddie to pick you up for your date. Your first date. You never would have thought the metalhead would have one, felt the same as you did and two, actually ask you out. You were almost polar opposites, but you’d developed your attraction to him rather quickly. So quickly that it was almost scary. When he’d shyly asked you out, fumbling over his words and stammering nervously, as he got ready to leave with Jamie, you’d said yes almost instantly.
And…now you were anxiously waiting for him. You looked yourself over in the full length mirror, wondering if you were dressed too formally and or too casually. Your dress was light and pretty, perfect for the summer and you slipped on your shoes before you could talk yourself into changing. Before you could worry too much you heard a loud knock at the door.
“Ugh,” you groaned at your reflection before deciding you looked fine enough and quickly padding to the door. You threw it open without even making sure that it really was Eddie and found yourself breathless as you looked up at him. There was a big, nervous smile on his face and a pretty bouquet of wildflowers in his hand, “Eddie.”
“That’s me,” he chuckled nervously as you slowly stopped yourself from freaking out, “these are for you, sweetheart.”
“They’re beautiful,” you gently took them and clutched them to your chest, “thank you so much.”
“O-of course,” he followed you inside as you walked to the kitchen to put the flowers in a vase. He looked around, trying to get a feel for you who were outside of the scrubs and office, “you look really pretty.”
“Thank you,” your cheeks - your entire face - warmed up under his attention and concentrated your efforts on arranging your flowers, “you clean up nicely yourself, handsome.”
“Figured I had to try if I wanted to stand a chance of looking remotely like I should be taking you out,” you snorted in amusement at his silly antics. There was something about that was relaxing and made you feel like you’d already known him for so long. This was definitely something you could get used to, “but I’m glad I hit the mark.”
“More than,” you promised sweetly, “flowers and handsome? It’s coming up cherries already. Where are we headed tonight?”
“That’s a surprise!” he grinned eagerly, “if that’s okay with you.”
“It’s perfect, Eddie. Really,” your reassurance made him already feel like he had an actual chance with you, “let’s go!”
Eddie had been debating on what to do for your first date since he'd asked last week. He wasn't sure what angle he should take - fancy and formal or casual and fun - eventually he settled on just being himself. Being the fun, dorky Eddie that he was. Which turned out to be the best thing possible.
"No way!" Your eyes lit up when he pulled up to the arcade, and you saw all that it had to offer. He'd been watching your face the entire time, trying to gauge your reaction. He hoped you didn't think it was too much of a single dad move, like it was the only thing he could think of, "I am totally kicking your ass at mini-golf!"
That brought a smile to his face, "you wish, princess. I happen to be a mini-golfing pro - I can beat a five-year-old and I'll beat you too!"
"You're so on," you almost jumped out of the car, motioning for him to hurry up, "and you're going down at air hockey too!"
"You're just a dork too," he reached for your hand without having to think about it, worrying for a moment that he was being too bold, but realized when you laced your fingers with his, "I was thinking after this we could go to that new diner for dinner. I-if that sounds okay, of course."
"It's perfect," you couldn't stop yourself from kissing his cheek excitedly, "I couldn't think of anything better!"
And Eddie was positive he fell in love with you then and there.
When he dropped you off later that night, he could barely manage to keep it together. He hadn’t planned on kissing you, not because he didn’t want to because he really did, but because he had been so nervous. He didn’t want to fuck anything up; but then you went and kissed him of your own initiative and he almost melted into a puddle on your doorstep.
“I had a good time tonight,” you touched his cheek before kissing him one last time, “I…I’d love to do this again, if you’d like.”
“I’ve love to,” his cheeks pinked as he nodded eagerly, “d-definitely.”
“Cool,” you bit the inside of your cheek, butterflies fluttering all around your stomach, “call me?”
“Of course,” he promised softy, “I’ll talk to you tomorrow, sweetheart. Have a good night.”
“You too, Eddie,” you whispered, watching as he reluctantly stepped off your porch and towards his van, “good night.”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
You’d been with Eddie for just over two years now. It was hard to believe it had been that long already but at the same time it felt like it had been forever. The two of you had fallen into each other’s lives so seamlessly. One of the best parts was that the two of you almost never fought. But, like with everything in life, something had to give.
Eventually you were going to have your first fight. It was inevitable…right? Right.
“Hey sweetheart,” Eddie came home to find you in the kitchen, singing along to whatever record you’d thrown on the vintage player. The kitchen smelled delicious, clear evidence that you’d been baking which also made his stomach grumble, “something smells good.”
“Hey my love,” you grinned as you walked over to him, putting your hands on his shoulders as you leaned up to kiss him, “missed you today.”
“Missed you too,” he stole a few more kisses before eagerly eyeing the pie you had cooling on the counter, “it smells amazing.”
“Nuh uh,” you teased, “these are for the bake sale at Jamie’s school tomorrow. I’ll make us something later, promise.”
“Fine,” he sighed dramatically as you snorted in amusement, “where is the kiddo, anyway?”
“With the Carlstroms,” you turned back to mixing the brownie batter as Eddie raised an eyebrow, “they were going to the theme park and asked if he could go along so I said yes. He really likes Eric so I figured they’d have fun and I’d be able to get all this baking done. They’ll be back tonight.”
“You just let him go?” Edide asked and you could tell from the tone in his voice that something was off, “without even bothering to ask me?”
“Ummm…yeah?” you answered softly, giving him a sheepish shrug, “you were at work, and Jamie’s over at their house a lot so I figured it was okay. We know them, and I didn’t want to bother you with it.”
“He’s my son,” he said quietly and your entire face fell as you realized what he was saying. You're not his mother, “you can’t just go and make decisions without me.”
“I-I’m sorry,” you stammered nervously, feeling tears already well up in your eyes, “I-I didn’t mean to sidestep you or anything, I really didn’t think it was a big deal. I’m sorry, I should have asked you before just saying yes.”
“Didn’t think it was a big deal?” he scoffed, “what if something happened and I had no clue where he was? He’s just a kid!”
“Eddie-”
“Don’t,” he shook his head and started to back out of the kitchen, “I’m going to go outside and cool off.”
You watched him go without a word, tears running down your cheeks. You hastily wiped them away with the sleeve of your sweater, trying to hide your sniffle. If you thought, even remotely, that this would have been a big deal, you would have asked Eddie first. It hadn’t seemed like a big deal at all; you loved and adored Jamie as though he was your own son and you’d never do anything to put him even in the smallest bit of danger. You hoped that Eddie would understand that at some point. You loved both of them with your entire heart.
Eddie came back home a hours later, and while you had been worried, you knew that more than likely he had gone to Wayne’s place. That man could talk sense into him and if nothing else, he often served as a neutral third party.
By the time he got back, Jamie was already home, worn out from playing and being in the warm sun, inadvertently napping on the couch. Eddie relaxed when he saw the small boy, affectionately ruffling his hair before finding you.
“Hey,” he rapped his knuckles gently against the wall as he found you still baking. You turned to him with a nervous expression, a hesitant smile on your face.
“Hi,” you whispered as you stopped what you were doing and set the tray of cookies down, “listen, Eddie-”
“Hang on,” he gently interrupted you, stepping closer and reached out to gently touch your cheek, “before you say anything else, I want to apologize. I shouldn’t have talked to you the way I did or said what I did. I’m sorry…I hope you can forgive me.”
You softened from his words, leaning into his touch as he brushed his knuckles along your cheek, “I do…of course I do. But I am sorry for not checking in with you. You’re right too, you’re his dad and it wasn’t my place to make that decision.”
“No,” he shook his head, “I shouldn’t have said that either. Not how I did - I am his dad but you’re his mom. And it is your place to make decisions like that. I guess sometimes I still have a little bit of a hard time remembering that I’m not a single dad anymore, especially when I’ve got someone so brilliant and amazing and wonderful by my side.”
“Eddie-”
“I mean it,” he promised and you knew that he was speaking from the heart, “all of it. I love you, baby.”
“I love you too,” you couldn’t stop yourself from throwing your arms around him and hugging onto him like a koala, “so much. You and Jamie.”
“I know it and so does he,” Eddie sighed softly and pressed a kissed to the side of your head, “thank you.”
“For what?”
“For taking me back,” he chuckled nervously, “not kicking me right to the curb.”
“One little disagreement isn’t going to break us apart,” you insisted gently, “things like this are normal and they’re going to pop up every now and then. But we love each other and we’re a family, so we’re always going to work it out.”
“Of course,” the part of him that worried you would just leave when things got hard was always going to be there, even if just a little bit. But he knew, more than anything, that you were never going anywhere. You were it, you were his forever.
“Daddy? Mama?” Jamie padded into the kitchen and his sweet little voice made you melt. He started calling you that out of his own volition, and it had made you happier than anything. Eddie had panicked and wanted to make sure it was okay, but when you reassured him that it was more than okay, you both knew that this was it. You were a family, “can I have a cookie?”
You exchanged a look with Eddie and you both playfully rolled your eyes. You grabbed one of the peanut butter chocolate chip cookies and broke it in half, handing a piece to both of your boys, “there we are. Good?”
“Mhmm,” Jamie nodded through a mouthful of cookie, crumbs already on his face. The sight was too adorable.
“Perfect,” Eddie whispered as he looked into your eyes, “absolutely perfect.”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
You’d noticed that Eddie had been acting nervous all day. You wondered if something was wrong, with either him or Jamie, but didn’t say anything. The young boy had seemed fine when Eddie left to drop him off at school in the morning. But Eddie seemed jumpy and off all morning. You’d caught him off guard more than a few times and he looked like he’d committed some sort of crime. When you’d asked him what was wrong, he’d insisted that nothing was wrong but you could tell that he was lying; you knew him well enough by now. Your two-year anniversary was coming up soon and you basically knew him like a book. Which also meant that you knew he would come forward and tell you what was going on eventually.
But when you got home…things were still off.
As soon as you walked through the front door you let out a long sigh as you kicked off your shoes and set your purse down. It had been such a long day involving screaming and sick children, irate parents, and malfunctioning tools. All you had been dreaming of doing was coming home and relaxing with your two loves.
“Eddie?” you softly called out his name as you walked into the kitchen; something smelled delicious already and was practically making your mouth water. You found him standing at the counter, intently cutting up some vegetables. You leaned against the counter and looked at him with starry eyes, as he met your eyes and offered you a small smile in return, “hey handsome.”
“Hey baby,” you could see his shoulders relaxing as he turned to you and leaned in to kiss you. You leaned into his touch, and let him kiss you softly, practically melting into him. When he pulled back, you tenderly took his face in your hands and pressed a few more kisses to his lips. By the time you pulled back he was grinning at you with a pretty pink flush to his cheeks, “missed you today.”
“I missed you too,” you sighed dramatically, causing him to laugh fondly at your silly antics, “lemme take a shower and then I’ll be back to whine all about it.”
“It’s not whining,” he insisted as he often did, “and you know I’ll listen to you talk about anything and everything.”
“You’re a good man,” you bit the inside of your cheek, “hey, where’s Jamie?”
“He’s having a sleepover with Jasmine and Ryan over at the Harrington’s,” he explained and you nodded in understanding. You loved that Eddie and Steve were best friends and that their kids were growing up to be the same, “last minute thing, you know how kids are. It’s just us tonight.”
“Oh?” you raised an amusement as he snorted in amusement, “you know what that means-”
“It means you need to hurry up and shower and come back to me," he flourished his hand, before grabbing the knife and going back to chopping, "because tonight we won't be interrupted by a little visitor."
“I’ll be back in fifteen minutes or less!” you practically ran up the stairs to your bedroom, ripping off your clothes as you grabbed a fresh set of pajamas. It wasn't too late into the evening but you weren't about to put real clothes back on; instead you settled on the most comfy pajamas you had, which were a pair of Eddie's boxers and an old, cozy sweater. Definitely not the sexiest outfit but perfect for a quiet evening in.
By the time you made your way back downstairs over half an hour had passed and Eddie was dishing up dinner. Your eyes widened at the sweet gesture and it was then that you noticed the pretty vase with all of your favorite flowers on the dining table.
"Oh, my love," you were touched that your sweet, adorable goof of a boyfriend had remembered your favorites and done this for you, "this is amazing. You are amazing."
"I…" he trailed off as he looked you over, big brown eyes growing soft, "wow."
"What?" You looked down at yourself in confusion before turning back to him, "what's wrong?"
"You're so fuckin' beautiful,” your entire face felt like it was on fire from his sweet words. You shook your head, wondering what had gotten into him, but he immediately shook his head as though he could hear the words in your head. He reached over and gently took your chin in his hand and turned your face towards his, “I mean it.”
“I’m wearing ratty old pajamas, my hair is wet, and I’m pretty sure I look like I haven’t slept in two weeks,” you wrapped your fingers around his wrist and brought his hand to your lips, pressing a gentle kiss to his knuckles, “but thank you.”
“You’re always beautiful,” he promised as he took your hand and pulled you towards the table. You sat down and watched as he set a plate full of all your favorites in front of you, followed by a freshly opened bottle of beer. He did the same for himself and sat down next to you, motioned for you to dig in, “I hope it’s okay. I know you’re the chef in the family but I tried.”
“Eddie,” he loved the way you said his name, almost like a prayer, so gentle and reverent, “you could have made boxed mac and cheese and I would have loved it. Thank you for this, seriously.”
“Anything for you, baby,” he insisted softly as you nodded, “you know that.”
“What’s the occasion?” you grabbed a forkful and shoved it into your mouth as he paled. You raised an eyebrow and swallowed it quickly, “for making all of my favorites.”
“N-nothing,” he said quickly, his voice climbing an octave. You knew that whatever had been on his mind earlier was clearly still stuck in there, “just wanted to do something special for my girl. Tell me about your day, baby. I’m guessing from your sigh that it was either bad kids or bad parents.”
“Both,” you groaned before launching into a full rundown of your day. Eddie listened intently, making you laugh when you needed it and otherwise providing a listening ear. When you finally got it all off your chest, feeling so much better than you had throughout the day, you asked Eddie about his day and listened just as he had.
The two of you just worked so well together, meshing into each other's lives as though it was always meant to be. And, you supposed, that’s exactly what it was.
After dinner, you cleaned up the kitchen before deciding that the whole evening called for some ice cream and a movie. Eddie even let you choose the film, and you settled on a romantic comedy that you’d been wanting to see. You knew it wasn’t his favorite, but he always watched them with you and you knew that deep down it wasn’t too bad for him either. You promised to watch a horror movie of his choosing in return, and he eagerly accepted your offer.
Throughout the movie you could feel his gaze shift back to you. He clearly wasn't paying too much attention and had something on his mind. Once you were finished with your bowl of ice cream, you set it down on the table and turned to him with a sigh.
"Edward," your use of his full name caught his attention and he turned to you with a sheepish smile, "what's going on? Tell me."
"N-nothing-"
"Bullshit," you groaned, "you've been acting off all day. Is it something I did or said? Are you okay?"
He looked at you for a long moment before letting out a heavy sigh and getting off the couch. You looked at him in confusion, hoping you hadn't said something to upset him. You watched as he quickly ran upstairs and you could hear him fumbling around in the bedroom before coming back downstairs.
"Eddie?" You weren't even sure if you should be worried or confused or…something but you were starting to panic.
"Baby," he stood in front of you and you could see his hand trembling with nerves, "I, ugh, this isn't what I planned at all. Not like this but umm, I gotta do it now or I'll never be able to."
"Are you breaking up with me?"
"W-what? No," he shook his head fervently, curls bouncing around, "the opposite actually. I-I love you so much. I never expected to meet you or fall in love with you or anything. I just assumed I'd see you twice a year at the dentist's office with my kid. But that obviously changed, and now we're here. And you, you've always been so good to me, and you've been so good to Jamie and I never thought I'd meet someone that loved both me and my son. And we love you so much, and you're just…what I've always been missing and wanting…"
"Eddie?"
"I wasn't planning on doing this tonight but you're just so…everything that I can't not," he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box, dropping to his knee before he opened it. Oh. This definitely wasn't what you had expected - at all. He opened the blue velvet box and inside sat the prettiest ring you'd ever seen, "will you…will you marry me?"
"Yes," you didn't even hesitate for a moment but then quickly realized the gravity of it all, "wait - you want to marry me? Like for real?"
"For real for real and forever," he grinned as he pulled out the ring and reached for your hand, delicately slipping it on, "the question really is do you want to put up with me forever?"
"It's not putting up with you," you promised, "not with someone you love. And obviously the answer is yes. I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you and Jamie."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah," he admired how the ring on your hand looked before pulling you in and kissing you sweetly, "I love you, so much. I'm sorry this wasn't the most romantic thing in the world."
"This is perfect," you insisted, "I love you more than anything."
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
You stared at the stick in your hand and then up at your reflection in the mirror. It was almost like you didn’t know if you should trust either the rest or yourself. But a million emotions started swirling up all at once and with all the other signs that had led you to getting the test in the first place made sense. The little stick exclaiming pregnant wasn’t wrong at all.
“Holy…fuck,” you whispered to yourself, still in disbelief, “how am I going to tell them?”
“How are you going to tell who and what?” Eddie. Of course your husband had to come home and upstairs at that exact moment. Him and his perfect timing; you could practically curse the universe for it. He was grinning, all big and dopey, at you as he leaned against the door, “what’s wrong, baby? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“Y-you’re here…”
“I am here…in my home after work,” he held up his hands and waved them around as you swallowed thickly, “alright, out with it. What’s up?”
“Here!” you practically shoved the white plastic stick into his hand, squeezing your eyes shut as you anticipated his reaction. You were almost positive that it wouldn’t be bad, but your stomach still churned with nerves…baby you supposed.
“What the fuck,” he whispered it so softly that you almost didn’t hear it. He looked at you with wide eyes as he held up the test, “you’re pregnant?”
“Uh huh,” you nodded dumbfoundedly as you shrugged your shoulders, “I-I guess so.”
“Wow,” he opened and closed his mouth a few times, looking like a fish out of water, “you’re pregnant.”
“I’m sorry,” it blurted out before you could even think about; it was just your natural instinct.
“Baby, why are you sorry?” his face fell as he wondered if you didn’t want to have this baby at all. Maybe you were upset at the positive test while he felt exactly the opposite way, “do you not want this?”
“No, no, no - I do,” you promised and he relaxed slightly, “yes, god, yes I do. I just…it’s habit? I feel like a kid right now, pregnant and feeling a hundred different emotions right now.”
“Well, princess, I’m happy to tell you that while you are pregnant, which I am very, very excited for, you’re in our home and we’re married and have things kind of figured out.”
And that was enough to make you feel better and relax…but it also made tears well up in your eyes as you studied your husband, “I’m excited too. Nervous, but excited.”
“C’mere,” he set the test down on the counter and pulled you in for a hug, wrapping his arms tightly around you as you melted into his warm, soft body. Eddie could feel your tears soaking the fabric of his shirt, and he responded by pressing soft kisses to the side of your head and rubbing your back in soothing circles, “I love you so much. I can’t even imagine what you’re feeling, but fuck I’m so in love with you. There’s no one else I could ever imagine doing this with.”
“Really?” you looked at him with wide, teary eyes and he nodded softly before pressing a kiss to your lips.
“You’re already an amazing mother,” he reminded you, causing your heart to swell. You loved Jamie so much, just as though he was your own, which you knew he basically was. At the beginning you worried if the young boy would ever accept you as his stepmother or even tolerate you. But it was so much more than that - you were his mother and he was your son. And now you were adding another little Munson to the mix, “and you will always be.”
“Thank you,” your lip trembled with effort as you tried not to cry and Eddie couldn’t help but kiss away your pout. He didn’t stop until he felt you smiling against his lips, “you’re an amazing dad, best friend, husband…everything.”
“Flatterer,” he teased as you giggled at him, “we’ll figure it all out together. And if you ever want to kick my ass for knocking you up, I give you full permission.”
“I’m sure - no, I know, I’ll take you up on that offer at some point,” you shook your head at your husband’s silly antics, “no we just gotta figure out how to tell Jamie.”
“You can just tell me,” you heard his small voice as he padded into your bedroom and jumped onto the bed. You and Eddie exchanged a look before he shrugged at you as you sighed softly. These Munson men were going to be the death of you.
“Should we?” you asked him under your breath as Jamie watched the two of you intently.
“It’s up to you, mama,” he kissed your cheek, “he might just explode if we don’t tell him…or he’ll figure it out in a day or two.”
“He’s too smart,” you agreed before sliding past Eddie out of the ensuite and over to Jamie. You crouched down so you were almost eye level with him and tenderly brushed a few rogue curls out of his face, “oh, my love. Daddy and I…we have some news to share with you.”
“Are we getting a dog?” his big, brown eyes practically glittered with excitement as you chuckled softly at him.
“Not quite buddy,” Jamie looked at Eddie in confusion before turning back to you. You were ready to go out and get this sweet boy his new dog and whatever else you wanted. But…you were pretty sure that was just the hormones talking…no need to get too crazy just yet.
“Oh…what is it then, mama?”
“Umm…well,” you swallowed the lump that had welled up, “we’re having…you’re…you’re going to get a little brother or sister soon.”
He was quiet for a moment and your heart started to hammer in your chest as you worried that he was going to be upset. That would definitely have crushed your soul a little bit. But then, you heard him gasp excitedly before he threw his small arms around you in his best attempt to hug you; you didn’t hesitate to tightly hug him back, “finally! When?!”
“It’s going to be a little while bud,” Eddie answered softly, coming over to sit on the bed next to his son. He leaned over and kissed the top of his head, “mama’s gotta grow them first.”
“Wow,” he looked at you with nothing short of awe as you beamed at him, “I’m gonna tell all my friends! I’ve been wishing for a brother or sister for s’long now. Finally!”
You exchanged a look with Eddie, both of you laughing softly. This was everything you could have dreamed of and more.
“Ahh, I love you both so much,” Eddie pulled you both in for a hug, squeezing you until you and Jamie were giggling wildly, “my three favorite people all in my arms.”
And yeah. This was everything.

fluff, angst, eventual smut, mutual pining, strangers to lovers, slow burn, mdni (3.4k)
It’s Blythe’s first day of preschool, she has a difficult morning which effects eddie. But then he meets you.
no warnings for this part! just a whole bunch of fluff and very slight angst! (reader is referred to as ms. honey just for the sake of this fic <3)
˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
the first day.
The soft pitter patter of small sock clad feet echoed throughout the trailer. Eddie was frantically chasing his giggling toddler around, trying to get her to sit still so he could fix her curly, unruly hair.
“C’mon Bly, if you let me do your hair I’ll let you have a cookie before we leave!” Eddie was stressed, trying to gather up his five-year-old for her first day of preschool. Blythe stopped in her tracks at hearing the word cookie. Turning around, she went straight for Eddie’s leg, barreling into him, making him stumble backwards.
“That got your attention, huh?” Even though he felt a bit frazzled, he couldn’t help but smile at his daughter looking up at him with chubby cheeks and her big doe eyes. She inherited a lot of his features, fortunately.
“Cookie! Can I have cookie?” Blythe had Eddie’s pant leg in a white knuckled grip, her chubby little hands grasping onto him tightly. “After, you’ll get a cookie when you let me do your hair.” Eddie bent down to pick her up, cradling her on his right hip, holding the brush and hair ties in the opposite hand.
Moving from the kitchen to the living room, Eddie seated himself on the old sunken in sofa, placing Blythe right in front of him.
Blythe was immediately distracted by the box tv in front of her, currently playing a rerun of ThunderCats.
Eddie was able to quickly put Blythe’s hair into two neat little braids before she became restless. “Okay Bly, you can get your cookie now.”
This caught Blythe’s attention immediately, she turned around to face Eddie, giving him a big toothy smile. Her smile made Eddie smile, giving her a kiss on the crown of her head. Blythe took the opportunity to be an absolute menace, and pull on Eddie’s hair that was halfway draped over her. “Cookie!”
“Hey—ow—you gotta let go of my hair if you wanna cookie,” Eddie breathlessly laughed out, lightly grasping her hands and pulling her off. “Let’s go get you your cookie, you little gremlin.”
Blythe raced Eddie into the kitchen, waiting with her hands on her hips and giving him an impatient foot tap. For a little toddler, she had a lot of fire in her, always keeping Eddie on the tips of his toes.
Eddie broke off a half of the chocolate chip cookie, handing her the smaller half. Blythe was not having it, she furrowed her brows looking up at Eddie with a pout. “Where’s the rest of my cookie?”
“Bly, that’s too much sugar for this early in the morning. You’ll get the other half later,” Eddie imitated her little scowl. “No daddy, I want it now! I want the cookie now!” She stomped her foot, still holding the piece of the cookie in her hand.
Eddie got on his knees to be eye level with her, putting both of his hands on either side of her head. “You’ll get it later, okay? Pinky promise?” Eddie brought his pinky out in front of her, Blythe still donning a pout, brought her smaller pinky into his.
She shoved the cookie into her mouth, getting crumbs all over her rosy cheeks and chocolate on her face, stomping into the living room and climbing back onto the couch.
Eddie stood up from his kneeling position, knees popping from the tension. He glanced down at his watch, eyes almost bulging out of his head from the time. “Shit—Bly, we gotta go honey.” He ran into the living space, quickly shutting the tv off.
“No! I’m not going.” Blythe yelled, crossing her arms over her chest and frowning. Eddie was quickly gathering up all of her stuff, opting to just put her shoes on in the car. He threw her little sparkly backpack over his shoulder.
“Blythe, please. We need to leave,” In reality, they needed to leave ten minutes ago, but time wasn’t a thing with a child anymore.
Eddie absolutely adored Blythe with all of his heart, she was one of the only people he genuinely loved. She was the light of his life. But sometimes, being a single parent is hard, especially since now the trailer was going to be dead silent for the rest of the day. No soft mumbles from Blythe playing with her toys. Just silence.
Eddie knew Blythe wasn’t going to budge on her own, so he just scooped her up off the couch and making a beeline for the heavy steel front door.
Blythe was crying and kicking, trying to get out of Eddie’s grasp. Tears streaming down her face, she yanked on Eddie’s hair, making his jaw clench from the sharp shooting pain.
Eddie didn’t want anyone in the trailer park to wake up from all of the commotion, seeing Blythe crying and in distress would create another rumor about Eddie around the small Hawkins community. Even though she was obviously well taken care of, the people in the town still despised Eddie and would do anything in their power to try to frame him for something that was false.
Blythe let go of Eddie’s hair, now clenching her tiny fists and trying to fight off her father.
Eddie was able to get her into her car seat, safe and secure. Her little body was shaking with small sobs, face red from the oncoming tears. Blythe truly didn’t understand what was going on, all she knew was that she was going to be away from her dad for too long, not wanting to even be a foot away from him.
Eddie quickly got into the car, the sun slowly rising over the clouds, casting a warm glow over the small town.
Eddie was nervous. Anxiously tapping his hands against the steering wheel all the way there, hearing Blythe’s little sniffles the entire time. She calmed down a bit, but she still looked upset. Her lips pulled into a frown, and with her little eyebrows furrowed.
Eddie’s nerves gradually got worse the closer he got to the school, worried about Blythe being made fun of or not making friends. All he wanted was to give her a decent childhood, something he didn’t have. He tried his hardest on giving her anything her tiny heart desired.
Pulling into the school's parking lot, Eddie got a glimpse of the time. Almost eight minutes late. This was definitely not a good starting impression.
“Fuck!” Eddie whispered to himself but not too quietly, as Blythe repeated a quiet ‘fuck’ to herself in between sniffles. “No, no! That words bad, don’t say that Bly,” Eddie looked at her through the rear view mirror.
Luckily, he was able to find a parking spot right in front of the school’s doors, which were still swarmed by teachers.
Eddie hastily jumped out of the car, aiming straight for the back door. He still had to put Blythe’s shoes on her feet, thankfully they were velcro but it was a bit of a heftier task when she kept kicking her feet.
“Look Bly, they light up!” He tried to distract her, finding anything to put her in a better mood.
“I don’t care.” Blythe’s stare was burning holes right through Eddie’s skull.
Thankfully, Eddie was able to get Blythe out of the car a lot easier than it was to get her in, putting her bag right over his shoulder again, holding her much smaller hand in his bigger one.
Blythe was practically attached to Eddie’s leg the entire walk to the front of the school, keeping his hand in her unyielding grip.
Eddie was getting a lot of sharp stares from the teachers chatting at the front doors, not giving him a welcoming greeting like they did for everything else. Eddie didn’t want to seem cold, so he gave them a tight lipped smile.
Eddie made his way over to the front desk, not quite familiar with the layout of the school.
“I’m, uh, looking for, Ms. Honey’s class?” Eddie kept sneaking small glances down at the crumpled notebook paper with the teacher's name written in scraggly handwriting.
The secretary gave Eddie the directions to the classroom, which luckily, wasn’t so far from the front of the school.
The hallways were crowded with sobbing parents and children, the sound of little giggles resonated through the school, and the sound of shoes squeaking on the multicolored linoleum floors.
Eddie was frantically looking around for the proper room number, navigating his way through the crowd.
He was able to find his way, with Blythe’s hand still in tow. Eddie handed Bly her backpack, putting it over her shoulders and kneeling. “I’ll be back later, ‘kay?” Eddie rested his hands over her shoulders, thumbs drawing idle circles over her biceps.
“Why aren’t you stayin’?” Blythe asked with a sad pitiful look on her face.
Before Eddie could answer, he was interrupted.
“Oh my gosh! Look at how shiny your shoes are!” Eddie and Blythe both looked at the same time, but Eddie was sure it was only his heart that was swarmed with butterflies.
You came out of the classroom, bright like a ray of sunshine. A gold dainty necklace adorning your neck, with a small heart pendant resting against the dip in between your collarbones, a white short sleeve blouse that was decorated in little daisies, and a knee length cream colored skirt swaying with your movement.
“What’s your name, little missy?” You were slightly hunched over, hands resting on your knees, looking down at Blythe.
Blythe suddenly became shy, hiding her hands behind her back and tilting her head to the side, resting on her shoulder.
“Blythe.” She mumbled it so quietly it was almost inaudible, but you were listening so intently you heard her just fine.
“Blythe, what a pretty name for a pretty girl!” Your voice was so sweet and soft, a perfect voice for a teacher.
Your compliment got a smile and a blush over Bly’s chubby little face. Her dimples now apparent.
Eddie couldn’t stop staring at you, he thought you were the most beautiful thing. Next to Blythe, of course.
“Thank you.” Blythe whispered.
“And you must be Mr. Munson, right?” You turned your attention to Eddie now, giving him a warm smile.
“Y-yeah, just Eddie’s fine though,” He wanted to slap himself in the face for sounding so awkward, but he couldn’t help himself when you were treating him and his daughter with so much respect and kindness.
“Well, it’s an honor to meet you!” You held your hand out for Eddie to shake, Eddie pulling himself out of the spell you had him under and shaking your hand back.
“Yeah, um, it’s great to meet you too!” He tried to make himself sound a little less inept.
You turned your attention back to Blythe. “Why don’t you say bye to dad and find a seat?” You were still talking to her with such a hushed voice, not wanting to startle her.
Eddie looked down at Blythe, waiting for her to turn around and give him a lung crushing hug. But when all she did was turn to look at him slightly with a frown, and walk into the classroom, Eddie could feel his heart crack right in half. The smile he had on his face quickly fading, now his face filling with hurt.
He knew she didn’t mean to hurt his feelings, she’d be as right as rain when he’d come by to pick her up later.
You immediately noticed Eddie’s mood drop, putting your hand on his shoulder and catching his attention. “I’ll keep an eye on her today,” You gave him a meaningful smile.
“Thank you, really. She wasn’t too thrilled this morning,” Eddie gave an awkward chuckle, ”disappointed that I didn’t give her an entire cookie.”
You giggled.
Eddie smiled at the sound, your giggle sounded like a beautiful spring morning. Colorful and full of life.
You just explained to Eddie what you were planning with the students today. The way you talked sounded like you reread a script multiple times before today, retelling him everything smoothly.
Eddie and you bid farewell to each other, then Eddie waved to Blythe through the doorway.
Blythe was too caught up in socializing with the other kids to notice.
Even though Eddie was visibly stressed from the morning with Bly, he was content with seeing how well she was doing with the other students so far.
Eddie was able to make his way through the lessening crowd, finding his way back to the parking lot unscathed.
When he got in his car, he felt a lot better than he did this morning. Perhaps it was from you. You were able to lift him up with just a small smile and a laugh.
The silence in the trailer felt never ending, it turned Eddie’s once adequate mood sour.
Blythe’s toys were scattered around the trailer. Eddie had a sudden rush of sadness wash over him from not seeing her shoes sitting by the front door.
But he has to keep on reminding himself that Blythe is getting older, she’s going to be gone more often now.
When Eddie was younger, he’d probably just snuff the idea of having a child. Laughing at it with a ‘yeah right’, but here he was, grieving something that wasn’t actually gone.
The familiar loneliness feeling came back full force though, making Eddie plop down onto the old couch with a sigh.
Eddie was delighted with having a day off today. Not that his job was tough anyways, he worked at the local library. It never got crowded, but sometimes the elderly that came by would ask questions about everything. But like always, Eddie stayed patient with them.
Patience is something he learned over the five years with Blythe.
Jesus Christ, five fucking years.
He still couldn’t believe how quickly the years sped by, how quick he was left to take care of a child on his own.
The only good thing he got out of that was Blythe. God, he absolutely loves Blythe. She is his sun, moon, and stars. His sun on a rainy day. He knows that he’s the same to her.
Eddie was absolutely grateful for you too, though. Even though he just met you, he knew immediately that you’d be someone Blythe would look up to.
He smiled at the thought of you. You were practically glowing when he saw you, an absolute angel.
Your voice was like a sprinkle of fairy dust, and your name matched your aura. Ms. Honey.
Eddie didn’t do much the few hours Blythe was away, mainly just pacing around the trailer, sitting on the sofa staring at the peeling paint on the walls, and gathering all of Blythe’s toys that were dispersed around the living room.
Since Blythe was only in preschool, she wasn’t gone for too long. Maybe around four hours at most, but those four hours to Eddie felt like four grueling years. He didn’t know what he would do without her.
That’s what led Eddie to where he is now, getting ready to leave to pick Bly up from school. Except twenty minutes earlier than he needed to.
Eddie was elated to pick up Blythe, anticipating this moment since the second she was born. Knowing that there was still a full ten minutes before the school opened the heavy front double doors, Eddie was constantly checking to make sure Blythe’s car seat was secured in the backseat. Being a single parent surely isn’t simple.
Now acquiring the habits of a parent, Eddie made sure that everything was perfect. No one ever told him how difficult it would be to raise a child, and definitely not on his own.
The sound of doors opening brought Eddie out of his thoughts, directing his attention to the now open school. He quickly staggered out of his car, strolling over to the few teachers standing at the front.
It seems that Eddie wasn’t the only worried parent with the same idea of leaving early, as a few parents were already trudging over to the school.
Eddie quickly went over to the secretary desk, telling the lady his name and who he was picking up. The school's secretary was a nice old lady. A few gray hairs sprinkled throughout her hair, and glasses perched over her nose.
As Eddie started to walk down the hallway, he was fidgeting around with the chunky silver rings that embellished his hands.
Sure, he was nervous and excited about how Blythe’s first day went, but he was also nervous to see you. He wasn’t worried about you looking down upon Eddie, but he was more anxious over the fact that he just met you and already couldn’t keep you off of his mind.
Heavy combat boots squeaking over the linoleum, Eddie almost jumped out of his skin when he ran right into you. You were peeking out of the classroom to see if anyone had arrived, giving both you and Eddie a good scare.
You let out a slight yelp while Eddie let out a small gasp, then both chuckling about the encounter.
“It’s great to see you again, Mr. Munson!” You smiled.
“Same to you, and please, you can just call me Eddie.” Eddie announced.
“Of course, Eddie.” You tested his name out, it felt right to say. Left a sweet taste in your mouth. You noticed a small blush form over Eddie’s face, smiling slightly at that.
“I’ll let Blythe know that you’re here,” You said before turning around and calling Blythe’s name. Eddie just nodded and cleared his throat while you did so, trying to rub away the blush that found its way over his cheeks.
You turned back to Eddie. “She’s just getting her stuff together,” you voiced. “She had a really good day today, very pleasant to have in class.” You grinned, looking up at Eddie from the doorway, holding piles of binders in your hands.
Eddie was now able to notice the small gold rings that decorated a few of your fingers. It was simple, but adorable.
Eddie was abruptly thrown out of the trance you had him in, Blythe came barreling out of the classroom with her hair all frizzy, and her backpack thrown over her shoulders haphazardly.
“Daddy!” Blythe ran right into Eddie’s leg, giving him a big squeeze.
“Hey, sweetie,” Eddie took Blythe into his arms, hugging her close to his chest. Blythe buried her face in his neck, wrapping her chubby arms around his neck. “How was your day?”
“So good, I did finger paint!” Blythe moved away from her spot on Eddie’s neck, showcasing her multicolored stained fingers. She had a huge smile from ear to ear, her eyes were almost closed.
You stood in the doorway watching it all unfold, beaming at the sight.
Eddie definitely looked scary to most, but moments like these made it seem all just a cover up. From the moment you saw Eddie, you knew he wasn’t how the town liked to make him out to be. Of course you’ve heard rumors about the notorious Eddie Munson, local ‘cult leader’.
“I’m glad to hear you had a good day baby.” Eddie left a kiss on Blythe’s forehead. Blythe brought her hands out and took hold of Eddie’s cheeks, leaving a baby kiss on his cheek in return.
Your heart nearly stopped. You wanted to start sobbing, their interactions were filled with pure love and adoration for one another.
“Well miss Blythe, I’ll see you again tomorrow.” You spoke up, smiling at the two.
“Bye Ms. Honey!” Blythe turned around in Eddie’s hold, giving you an exuberant wave. “Now I can get my cookie, right daddy?”
Blythe turned back around to Eddie, her partially toothless smile making him laugh. “I guess you can now.”
“See you both tomorrow,” You voiced, still grinning at the two.
Eddie smiled at you, his big bronze eyes practically had a sparkle in them, gleaming everytime he looked your way. You felt your face flush from his gaze, turning around to gather up the rest of the students.
Blythe was chatting away as Eddie held her close, sharing every detail about her day and what she did. Occasionally mentioning how excited she was for the cookie.
Eddie was relieved that Blythe had a good day and was enthusiastic about going to school now. But he was even more relieved about you.
You were accepting and didn’t grimace at him whenever he walked into the small school.
You were lovely, and he was overjoyed to be able to see more of you.
