Aria’s POV
I sat back at the bar next to Jon. He smiled at me as he handed me a drink. I raised an eyebrow at him. He held his hands up. “It’s clean. I swear.”
I giggled. “I hope I can trust you. I am a lightweight regardless.” I took a sip of the drink. I spit it back up. He chuckled at my reaction to the drink. It was so fruity. I couldn’t even taste the alcohol in it. “What is this? It’s horrible.”
“Sex on the beach. I was checking if you weren’t trying to just impress someone with your drink choices.”
“If I was,” I asked. “What were you going to do if I drank this whole thing down?”
“Buy you another.” He shrugged laughing. I shook my head.
The night carried on. It almost felt like I had known him before with how comfortable I felt around him. I didn’t even need the alcohol. I had made him order me a beer to replace the sex on the beach. He obliged and got me the same as his. It was stronger than the Bud Lights I was used to, but I liked it. I felt happier than I had in a long time as the night rolled on. We stayed at the bar till the bartender called for the last call. That was when Jon turned to me with a smile. “Shall I get you home?” I smiled and nodded, taking his hand. I couldn’t deny the knots that turned in my stomach as I took his hand. He wasn’t going to want...well, of course, he was, a man like this had to...He could have had any of those girls at the bar.
We walked together out the door. I was expecting him to pull out his keys, but he never did. We just kept walking. “Um, don’t you have a car here?” I asked him.
“No, I live nearby. I walked here to avoid DUIs. We aren’t exactly sober enough to be driving. You can spend the night if you need to or wait for an Uber at my house. I think it’s a bit safer. You never know who is lurking around.”
“What if you are the creep I need to be hiding from?” I teased.
“Well, if I am such a creep why are you still walking with me?” He winked as we kept walking. I felt the heat rise on my cheeks. We walked a bit before I spoke again.
“I don’t live that far from here either. I could probably walk from your house.”
“Where do you live?” He asked.
I pointed towards Alexa’s apartment. “Well, it isn’t my place. I am looking for a place of my own. I just kind of got out of a relationship.” I said awkwardly as I rubbed the back of my neck. “My friend is letting me stay with her until I can find a place of my own. It’s just passed the gas station.”
He nodded, “I live near there. Maybe a couple of blocks south near the auto shop where I work. I will walk you home. I can’t let a pretty girl walk home alone. Can I?” His tone was really flirty even after what I had just let loose.
“You aren’t scared away by the fact that I just got out of a relationship?” He shrugged, “It takes a lot to scare me away. Besides, wouldn’t that mean I was trying to be in one with you. Someone is jumping really far ahead.” I blushed again brightly. “I am so sorry.” I looked down feeling embarrassed. Maybe I read him all wrong. He is just being a nice guy. The whole idea of meeting a guy at a bar was a foreign idea.
He stopped us, “You are fine. Really. I am just teasing. Trust me, you seem like a great girl. I don’t want to screw anything up by rushing into things you aren’t ready for.” He kissed my hands. “I just want to get to know you. I wasn’t even going to try any moves on you.”
I felt like I was in another universe with his words. Sure, Seth said romantic things...normally after I caught him doing something he wasn’t supposed to do or after a huge fight. The way Jon said, it didn’t sound like his way of getting me in the bed.  He sounded so sincere. I didn’t want to question it. I just for once want to believe that a guy wanted me for who I really was on the inside. Not just because of my looks or of any other part of me.
“So, you work as a mechanic?” I asked him, changing the subject.
He nodded, “It is still somewhat of a new auto shop in town. We still get a bunch of customers. What do you do?”
“I am nothing special really. Just a secretary, currently. I sometimes miss working at the gym. It was more fun, but I couldn’t work there anymore after my dad passed.” Sure, Aria, just drop that huge bomb on him. I was really going to test him on what he could take.
“What happened to your dad?” He asked.
“He had a heart attack. He was really sick for a while. He couldn’t stop fighting. He used to be one of the biggest fighters in the underground world. Not sure if you know about it. It is like wrestling, but fewer rules.”
“More blood.” Jon chimed in. “I know of it. I am one too. Your father must have been Ricky Lee Meyers.”
“How do you-”
“He’s a legend. Every fighter in this town knows who he was. A lot of people miss him even his enemies.”
“Yeah,” I looked up to the stars, a single tear stuck in my eye. He stopped looking at me. He whipped the tear from my eye. “I miss him the most. He was the only family I ever had. After he passed, all I thought I at least had was my ex but it turns out, I didn’t even have him. I honestly have never felt so alone when I found out I didn’t even have him. It’s like being in a room full of people, but none of those people can see or hear you.”
“I am so sorry, kitten.” He said, pulling me close. He kissed my head as he held me for a moment longer.
“What did you call me?” “I am sorry, do you not like to be called that?”
“No...just been a while since I heard anyone call me that. It’s nice.” I smiled at him. I put my head into his chest. It was nice to feel like I could let my feelings out with someone. Even if it was someone I just met.
He grabbed my phone and took my finger to unlock it. He typed something into the phone before handing it back. “You can call or text if you ever need to talk...or you at least want to talk. I don’t sleep much so I can probably answer whenever. Unless I am in a fight which is just mostly weekends. I will respond when I can.”
I smiled up at him as I called the number so he could get my number. “Thank you. For everything tonight even the nasty ass drink. It means a lot to me. I really needed this.”
He smiled back at me, “It’s nothing, kitten.” He leaned in a bit. His eyes were moved from mine down to my lips. I could feel my heart racing as time moved slowly as his head leaned in. His lips captured mine. The sparks flew from my lips. He deepened the kiss pulling me closer to him, his hands resting on my hips. I wrapped my arms around his neck.
Suddenly a light came on, pulling us apart when I jumped in alarm. It was the light outside the apartment building. Alexa must have seen me and turned it on because it flickered after a bit. I looked back at Jon. “I think my roommate is trying to call me back in.”
He nodded. “Always has to be someone to ruin the kiss. Have a goodnight kitten.” He kissed my head before I walked back into the building.
Jon’s POV
I sat outside the steps for a moment longer after she had gone in. I couldn’t believe anything of what had happened tonight. From meeting into the bar to the walk home. I could have never imagined this would have gone so well.
I knew all of it. Everything she had just told me and more. I couldn’t let her know that. I know building a relationship on lies was never a good thing, but I had no choice. If she knew who I was before… She would never want to be with me. I know she doesn’t fully remember that night I turned against everything I thought I stood for. I knew lies had been put in place of the memory. Whatever Seth and the others had cooked up to hide their own guilt.  It was something I had to do. I had to change my name. Change my look, and start a new life. I couldn’t get Aria out of my head. I wanted to give her up. I knew Seth would never ever release his hold on her. He sure did have a tight one, but I could tell it was loosening. He only had himself to blame for that one.
I heard a ‘snap’ of a twig from behind me.  I whirled around as I faced the noise. Whatever made the noise quickly went back into the shadows. I didn’t have to see the noise to have a pretty good idea what or rather should I say who caused it. Seth had minions running around for him everywhere. It shouldn’t surprise me he had one right outside the girl’s house Aria was staying at. I knew it wouldn’t be long before Seth would find out that I was back around and going after Aria. I could almost picture his face when he got the news. I love Aria, but getting back at Seth was a nice part of this.
---The Next Week---
Seth’s POV
My blood had boiled all weekend long that once Monday rolled around I knew what I had to do. I had the perfect plan. Well, most of the way. I was going to confront him about Aria. Tell him, he better backs the fuck off. He should know who he is messing with.
I walked start into the American Nightmare Autoshop. I walked up to the woman at the front desk. She smiled sweetly at me. “May I help you?” Her nametag read Kris on it. II shook my head. “ Jon Moxley, I need to speak to him?” “He’s at lunch. Can I take a message for you?” She asked sweetly.
I shook my head. “I will just go in and see him now. Thanks.” I said as I walked on by. She tried to stop me, but I was too fast. I was already at the table where Jon was eating his meal. He looked up at me as I walked in. A small smirk played on his lips. I should have known he knew I was coming. This boy was always in line with my thinking or three steps ahead. Lately, he has been three steps ahead by showing up at that date the other night after not being around for a year. As far as I knew, he had fallen off the grid. I couldn't be happier that he was gone. Now, he just suddenly appears. Something was up and I really wanted to know how he knew she was going to be there.
“Don’t worry, Kris, he’s an old friend of mine.” He said shooing the girl away. I could hear the other mechanics working in the shop as I sat down across from him. He didn’t offer me the seat, but I wasn’t going to wait for it.
“What do you think you are doing?” I ask him.
“Eating a sandwich.” He smiled innocently. “But I guess you are meaning with Aria. Last I checked she was doing this out of her own free will.”
“Why? Why now? You sat and waited for years to make you move on her. Why? Also, how did you know that we had broken up?”
Jon sucked the mayo off his thumb. “I am pretty sure you know why, Seth. As for how...Let’s just say that I have my sources and leave it at that.”
I put both my hands on the table glaring at him. His eyes met mine. We held eye contact for a moment before I spoke again. “Stay the fuck away from her.”
“I’ll stay away from her if she asks me to. She asked me to go on a date with her and I am going to go. You aren’t her father or her boss, so stop acting like it. You just can’t stand the fact that she might actually want me. You could have maybe been able to get rid of any other guy that she tried to date as you have in the past. You know though, I won’t be as easily beaten. I waited all those years for a chance and I will be taking it.”
I growled softly as I knocked the sandwich out of his hand. I stuck my finger in his face. “I am warning you. Stay. Away. Don’t make me do something I will regret.”
Jon raised an eyebrow in pure amusement. He stood up a bit to meet my face. “What are you going to do to me? Get those goons you had the other night beat me up as they did to Kevin. Beat me with a steel bat. I am not scared of you. I know what you are made of.”
“She’s mine,” I said slowly, my eyes not leaving his.
“You have a funny way of showing it. Do you even love her for the person she is or do you just like having her as property?”
“Shut up, I wouldn’t expect someone like you to understand. You can’t even tell her who you really are. I bet you told her all about how you are Jon Moxley like Dean Ambrose never existed. Like you didn’t know her before.”
“Just the same as you never told her how you played a part in her father’s death. Funny, how you can be loyal to everyone, but the girl you call the love of your life. You are a true piece of shit, Seth.”
“I figured you of all people would understand the things I had to do.” “Oh, I understand perfectly. “ Jon said, shaking his head as his focus went back to his lunch. I growled softly. I could feel the anger burning inside me. I couldn’t take it. It was just like him to bring up the past as a way to justify what he was doing. He was the one that ran off. He abandoned not only me but Aria and now he was going to play as if he was somehow superior to me. I took the table and flipped it over. “You know what Dean, Jon whoever the fuck you are. How do you think your date will go if I tell her who you really are?! That you lied to her.”
He finished the last few bites of his sandwich. His eyes glaring at me. He moved forward, “I could easily tell her the whole truth about her father’s death. She wouldn’t even be able to look at you ever again.”
“She would never believe you.”
“What makes you so sure she will believe you in who I really am? You spent most of the relationship lying and cheating. How would she know this is the truth? Don’t you think you hurt enough anyway? Let her go already.”
“To you? You want me to let her go to a lunatic like you! That is fucking rich. Did you get brain damage or something?”
“At least my lunatic self knows how to treat her properly unlike you.” Our foreheads were touching at this point. I took this moment to push him back. He stumbled back a bit. “Is that all you got, princess?” He asked challenging me before he launched forward towards me pushing back causing me to fall back on the table behind me. “You should know by now, I am not scared to fight you. It’s pretty dumb to come to my place of work and try to pick a fight though. Even if you get the upper hand, I got others in the back waiting to kick your ass.” I just noticed that his coworkers had started to crowd around as soon as we had started yelling. I was sure they heard everything and none of them were on my side. I worked for the rival that they wanted nothing better than to destroy. I hadn’t come with any back up in the building, so it was me against all of them. Any idiot could see the problem here.
My eyes moved back to him. “This isn’t over,” I said before letting myself out of the building. I pulled out my phone as soon as I got out. He was right about one thing. She would never believe me of who he truly was. I also risked him telling her a secret that would kill her. As much as I wanted to believe he wouldn’t be so cruel, I didn’t want to risk putting it past him.
Seth to Aria: You need to stay away from this Jon guy. He will do nothing, but hurt you.
Aria to Seth: Like you?
Seth to Aria: Just listen to me, please. Be careful with him.

The Big Book: A Roy Harper recovery fic
It was funny how a situation that should have been perfectly normal could suddenly be so stressful. A clink as glasses tipped against one another. The oh-so-familiar EDM bass beat that filled the air until it practically vibrated against his skin. The clammy feeling in the palms of his hands…
Roy took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to occupy his thoughts with literally anything other than the 1.75 milliliter bottle just on the other side of the table. His eyes were trained on the deep honey color of the liquid inside while his fingers traced the circle of condensation his own cup left behind on the vinyl tablecloth.
Stop staring. Come on Harper. You can do this. He tore his eyes away, screwing them shut as he brought his cup up to his lips and took a sip of shirley temple. The artificial flavor of grenadine tasted way too sweet, but the bubble of the soda against his gums made him relax ever so slightly. That was the feeling he loved. Not exactly, but it was pretty damn close. Not a day went by that he didn’t imagine the ghost of beer fizz on his lips, but if he could mimic it, even slightly, then it made this shitty situation just that much easier.
Living Sober, a book written by and for alcoholics, suggested keeping a sweet drink in your hand any time you would be near alcohol. Needless to say, ever since he managed to start this bout of sobriety, Roy had kept nothing but sugary drinks in hand at all times. His soda intake had gone through the roof. But hey. At least he wasn’t drinking.
He wasn’t drinking.
He wasn’t drinking.
That would be great… If he wasn’t surrounded by people who were. It was some kind of get-together; a bad attempt at rekindling friendships between his former Titans team, his current Outlaws, and various other vigilantes in their age range. That was a lie. IT was just gonna be the Titans. At least, that’s what it started as. That’s what the plan was. To be perfectly honest, Roy hadn’t wanted to go at all. Did he like his friends? Sure. That was the word for it. They were like a second, third, and fourth family to him after all. But he knew them all too well. He knew that spending time with them would mean white knuckling it as they drank. Them pretending they were being conscious of his predicament while simultaneously clinking their shot glasses together. God he didn’t want to be here.
“So then Wally turned to the guy and saidー”
“No! You’re gonna do it wrong!” The speedster cut Dick off with a hand over the guy’s mouth. Wally. The only other member of this ragtag group that wasn’t some form of intoxicated right now. It wasn’t by choice though. No matter how much the man drank, his metahuman genealogy made it impossible for him to get drunk. What a lucky prick. “So I turned to the guy and saidー”
Roy took another sip of his shirley temple.
“Hold on. I’m gonna go get another one.” Donna pushed up from her seat, and Roy couldn’t help but look at her face. The woman’s face always got a pink glow after she’d had a few. It was a sure tell that she was getting close to her limit, but everyone knew she wasn’t going to stop any time soon. She walked with her highball glass to the bar counter on the other side of the sleazy joint they were in and waved down the bartender.
“Oh yeah. Another!” Dick reached for the bottle of gold Jose Cuervo and poured himself another shot. That was just like Dick. Always sloppy.
Still. Roy watched the tequila pour and couldn’t help but lick his lips. God he loved tequila. He remembered when he first started drinking, and would still pour salt on the back of his hand and bite into a lime wedge with each shot. When had he stopped relying on tricks to keep it down? When had it started going down like water? By the time he was about… Eighteen maybe? No. Probably seventeen. The ginger man felt a shiver roll down his spine. Right. That’s why we quit. Because it was too easy not to.
He reached for his pocket, opening up his wallet and peaking at the orange colored coin inside. Two months. Two whole months. He pulled it out slightly and reach the inscription on the back.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
The prayer played on repeat in his head like a broken record. He could do this. Just an outing with friends. He could do this.
“ーgrade, right?”
It took a moment for Roy to realize someone was talking to him. “Huh?” He slipped his coin back into his wallet and looked up to find Lilith staring right at him from across the table. To be honest, he didn’t remember talking to this girl all that much. At least not recently. Not since she moved to the… Oh lord where had she moved to. West coast? That sounded right. Wow. He was a really shitty friend. “Sorry, what was that?”
“Lian. She’s in the first grade now, isn’t she?” The red headed girl swirled her straw through her strawberry daiquiri.
“Oh uhー”
“She’s still in kindergarten.” The voice came with a weight leaning down on Roy’s shoulder, and the man didn’t have to look up to know exactly whose it was. Jason fucking Todd, hopefully here to save the day.
“That so? How nice.” Lilith seemed to accept this, smiling over the lip of her drink, and for some reason not using to straw to take a sip. Why? What was the point of that? Using the straw made it easier to get straight to the rum that settled at the bottom of the glass.
“Hey Jaybird. Better late than never, asshole.” Roy smacked the guy’s arm away.
“Hit some traffic.” The man just shrugged before dragging a chair away from another table and somehow fitting it between Roy’s and Donna’s. Probably for the better. “Didn’t realize yous guys would get the party started without me.”
“What? You think we’re just gonna wait for ya?” The archer did his best to flash a grin as he lifted his glass, tipping it back against his lips, only to find out that it was empty. So instead he pulled one of the ice cubes into his mouth and chewed on it. Ok. That worked too.
Jason eyed him for a second. “Want me to get you another?”
“Nah, I’ll be fine.” Roy placed the glass down, tapping his fingers against the sides of it.
“Hold on a sec. Hey waiter!” Jason called out towards some poor, underpaid girl in a waist-apron. He waved her over. “Can we get anotherー Wait what were you drinking?”
Roy felt his nerves spike. He didn’t like announcing his prissy, sissy drinks to the world. He had this manly persona to keep up. Someone like him should be ordering a glass of whiskey. Someone like him should be getting ready to slam down another jägerbomb, then disappear into the bathroom to do a line of some sketchy shit he bought off some random guy in the parking lot. “The usual.” He muttered.
“Alright so Imma need a gingerale, and a shirley temple. Make sure to put a few extra cherries in there for me too, if ya could.” Jason rattled off the order without any need for clarification. Damn. This bastard really knew him too well.
With the waitress gone ー he was oddly nervous about eavesdroppers ー Roy felt like he could relax again. “You’re not drinking?”
“Nah. I’m good.” Jason shrugged before stretching an arm over the back of Roy’s chair. It was casual. Nothing odd about it at all.
“Oh. Ok then.”
“Jayyy?” Dick’s slurred words interrupted. “When’d you get’ere?”
“I’ve been here this whole time.”
Roy couldn’t help but snort at the confused expression on the man’s face as he sincerely tried to remember whether or not Jason had, in fact, been with them since the beginning. Eventually, the acrobat just shrugged, and took a sip of some highlighter blue drink he’d somehow acquired. Well, Donna was back, so maybe she brought it for him.
“Dick slow down.” Wally tried to grab at the end of the glass, but their drunken mess of a leader pulled it tight into his chest instead.
“No! I’m only on like…” They all watched as the man counted on his fingers, before holding up one hand. “I’m on drink seven. I’m fine!”
What a lightweight. Seven drinks was nothing. Roy needed bare minimum twelve strong ones.
“What an idiot.” He heard Jason mumble.
“Our fearless leader.” Roy dipped his fingers into his cup and pulled up another ice cube. If this is what he was stuck with, then that was fine. Damn. When was that new drink gonna get here?
Jason looked him over. “You doing ok?” The question was whispered.
There was a pause as Roy just let the ice cube melt on the top of his tongue. He sucked on it lightly, tasting the residual sugar that it must have picked up from the syrup. “Yeah. I’m alright.”
“Don’t lie to me, Harper.”
The stern tone in Jason’s voice made Roy chuckle and roll his eyes. “Yes Mom.” He looked off at the decorations on the wall of the pub, lifting his hands to adjust the cap on his head. He couldn’t quite decide if he wanted it to face forward or back, but he decided to settle on forward for now. “Yeah. I think I’m ok. I’m making it by at least.”
“Alright, man."
They somehow integrated themselves into the conversation again, though it was mostly Jason making sarcastic comments on whatever trash left their increasingly drunken friend's mouths, while Roy stayed on the sidelines. The waitress coming back was the biggest blessing he'd had since sitting down. He immediately pulled one of four maraschino cherries out and popped it into his mouth, the cool gush of the juice kicking his senses back into gear.
There were several moments where he thought of jumping into the conversation, and putting in his two cents. Instead, he leaned back in his chair, and thought about which AA meetings he could get to this week. As fun as the seven thirty am meeting was, it seemed like he would be out late tonight, so he probably wouldn't be able to get up for it. He could probably get to a noon meeting, but he really preferred the noon NA meetings. It's been a skinny minute since he's gone to NA actually…. Well he didn't really have anything to do tomorrow, so he could go to that, and then stick around for the four o'clock AA, and then pick up a Happy Meal for Lian for dinner. Yeah. That would work. She loved getting those toys too.
It wasn't until Jason tapped on the back of his chair that Roy realized he'd really let himself zone out. He frowned. That wasn't like him at all. He needed to be more active in the conversations; at the very least, crack some jokes. He listened in on Donna attempting to lecture the rest of their teammates on the buddy system, before he finally jumped back in.
"Oh come on, baby. How much trouble could they get in?" He grinned, leaning on his elbows.
Apparently, this question caused some kind of horror, cause the star-spangled girl immediately looked at him in shock. "A lot, actually."
"Nah. They'll totally be fine." He waved her off, crossing his arms behind his head. Did he know the context? Not at all. Fake it 'til ya make it, am I right?
"Oh my god you really are all dumbasses." The woman hung her head in her hands.
"Uh hey. Don't lump me in with this." Jason frowned. "I'm not part of your little troupe."
"No you just stole Roy from us." Wally jabbed, pushing the now empty tequila bottle to the other side of the table. When did it get empty? Who drank it? Who drank the most tonight?
"This idiot? You can have him back any time."
"Ouch. Tell me how you really feel."
The chatter stayed pretty consistent, and for a while the archer was actually feeling quite comfortable. This was easy. Talking. He could do that. Now that drinks seemed to be done with, and they could all collectively agree to give Dick shit for how he was acting, this was all fine. Wow. Being sober was great. Going out with friends, knowing that he'd remember getting home? Amazing. Not googling the nearest ATM so he could get cash to blow on smack? Definitely saving the bank.
He could do this. This time, he'd make it work. This time he'd go through the steps, and rely on his sponsor when he needed it. He’d do a ninety in ninety, and collect those chips like they were Pokémon cards. He could build a display for them. He loved building things, and tinkering, and he’d been looking for a new project. He could make enough spots for a whole years worth. It would give him that bit of motivation he needed.
He vaguely caught a whiff of a glass of wine being served at another table, and flicked his wallet open again to see the picture of his daughter he kept over his license. That right there was his main reason for keeping clean. That smile.
He had to do this.
“Dude, you ok?” Wally’s voice shook Roy out of whatever train of thought he’d somehow wandered down.
“Huh?” He rubbed his thumb back and forth over the photograph.
“Idunnoman.” The fellow redhead shrugged, tipping his chair back on its hind legs. “You just seem out of it. Really weird too. You’re not talkin’ all that much either.”
“Um…” Roy pulled the lip of his baseball cap down over his face, and took a breath. “Yeah, man. I’m doing fine.”
“You sure? Cause like, you just seem different andー”
“He’s the same as he always is.” Jason practically slammed ー well, loudly placed down ー his soda. The action itself wasn’t very threatening, but the glare that came along with it wasn’t one you’d want to be on the other end of.
For some ungodly reason, rather than just dropping it, this asshole just had to keep pushing. Man, fuck speedsters. Sure, Wally was one of his best friends, but like… Screw you, man. “But like… I dunno it just doesn’t really seem like you wanna be here.” He doesn’t. “Like you didn’t have to come, but since you’re here you could likeー”
“What?” Roy felt his face drop. No. No that wasn’t what he was thinking at all. “Dude, I was the one that suggested we get together in the first place.” It was his sponsor’s idea. Rekindling old friendships was supposed to help him relearn how to be social.
“Not to start an argument here,” Oh god Donna not you too. “But I do agree that you’re acting different than you normally do. If something’s wrong, you know you can talk to us.”
“Nothing’s wrong.” Nothing’s wrong with you guys, but everything’s wrong with him. Roy felt his heartbeat picking up. Was he really that… weird? He thought… He thought he was doing so well…”
“You surー”
“Leave it.” Jason cut in again, this time a lot more forceful. Thank his Higher Power for this guy. Honestly? Where the hell would he be without this guy? The angry, warning voice came with a hand on Roy’s thigh, which he hadn’t realized was bouncing at about a mile a minute. It gripped, and Roy stilled.
“It’s fine, Jay.” He whispered, though he placed his hand down on top of the other’s. “It’s…” He took a deep breath. “Actually, can I go?”
Jason just nodded, instantly pushing his chair back. “It’s pretty late. You probably gotta pick Lian up from the sitter, right?” Thank you for making up an excuse. Thank you so much.
“Shit. You’re right.” He did his best to feign like he’d completely forgotten about that. He didn’t actually have to pick Lian up until the morning. He’d made plans just in case he fucked up tonight. She didn’t deserve to see him any kind of distressed, or under any kind of influence. She didn’t deserve to know her daddy was such a fucking mess. He looked back towards his friends, making sure to smile even though he really didn’t feel up to it. “Sorry guys. We should do this again next week though.”
“Totally!” Lilith jumped in with a smile. She was always nice. Wow. He seriously needed to talk to her more. At the time, it didn’t occur to him that she was a psychic, and could probably read the sheer distress that was rolling through him. No. That was something he wouldn’t realize until tomorrow. “I’ll make sure to keep my weekend free for you. Oh, could you bring Lian next time? I haven’t seen her in ages.”
Any excuse to think about his little Squeaker was an excuse to actually feel good. “I’ll send you a picture of something she drew a few days ago. I think you’d like it. Well uh…” He looked to Jason, who was pulling a wad of cash out of his pocket ー no wallet apparently ー and dropping it on the table. It was more than enough to cover both of their drinks. “Yeah. I’ll see you later.”
He vaguely registered a very drunken goodbye from Dick, and what sounded like Wally getting smacked ー he deserved it ー as he pushed his way out of the pub, his feet carrying him faster than would be deemed normal, but he wasn’t quite running, so that was probably fine?
The cold night air filled his lungs when he stepped into the parking lot and it was… It was so much. The combination of finally able to release that tension from white knuckling it through the past few hours, and the shame of apparently being a bad friend made him just.... Men don’t cry. They don’t. They’re not supposed to, but right now, standing outside of a shitty dive joint he didn’t even want to go to in the first place, stuffing his hands into his armpits because of course he hadn’t brought a jacket, he could just feel the sting in the corners of his eyes; the pool, and the threat that this of all places was where he was finally going to break down, and… God he just… He felt so useless.
Hinges cried out as the door opened and slammed shut, before a body was standing right next to him. He didn’t have to look up to know is was Jason. It was always Jason. Soon that slightly stained, definitely thrifted leather jacket that was so iconically him was being draped around Roy’s shoulders. First he felt the warmth. The smell of cigarette smoke came as he muttered his thanks, and adjusted the coat so his arms could be shoved into the sleeves. One of Jason’s hands dug through the jacket’s outer pocket, and pulled out a Marlboro box and an old fashioned zippo. The only sound between them was the repeated flicks of the lighter, before Jason took his first drag. “Want it?” He held it between them.
Roy looked at it, before shaking his head. “Stopped that too.”
“Oh. Sorry.”
“Nah. It’s fine. You didn’t know.” He pulled at the collar of the jacket, and took a deep breath. “It was the easiest thing to quit.”
“I bet.” The cigarette was only half finished when Jason tossed it to the ground and snubbed it out with the toe of his boot. “I know you didn’t drive. Want me to take you home, or do you want to come back with me?”
Roy thought about it. Home would be empty right now. That didn’t sound great. Of course, Jay would stay if he asked. But they both knew who had the more comfortable bed. “Your place.”
“Cool.” A finger and thumb pinch at the hem of one of Roy’s pockets and gave a tug. “Come on. My bike’s over here.”
Roy let himself be led. “Don’t you think a car would be smarter in this weather?”
There was a slight hum, though they both knew there was no way Red Hood would ditch his bike for a Honda Civic. The only reason Roy traded his out was because a carseat couldn’t fit on his Harley. “Nah. I think I’m good. ‘Sides. I got good tires.”
Jason was parked on the other side of the lot, which was awfully far from the entrance to the pub, but really close to the road. He always did that. Closer to the road meant it was easier to get away. They did a lot of that; getting away.
The second seat popped open, and Jay pulled out the ever-iconic Red Hood helmet, holding it under his arm as he held out a second, all black one out. “Can’t have your brains splatting all over the road.”
He couldn’t help the chuckle that left him. “Damn, how bad did your driving get?” Roy took the helmet and just… Stared at it. The tinted face shield would make it impossible for anyone to identify the wearer, but it still somehow caught a glare from a nearby street lamp. He felt himself frowning at it. “Hey… Jay?”
“Yeah?”
“Am I…” He swallowed. He didn’t actually know what question he wanted to ask. Words were never his strong suit. Action always worked best for him. Punching things, and shooting things, and… and… What else did he like? Maybe he didn’t need to ask a question right now. Actions. Doing things. Yeah. That’s what he needed right now. He needed to do something. Anything. Anything that would make him not think about the bees in his teeth. “Sorry. I’m being and idiot.”
“Hey. None of that.” Jason hung his helmet on the handlebars before stepping in and pulling the one out of Roy’s hands, placing it on the leather seat. Hands found their spot on Roy’s shoulders, squeezing them in a really awful massage, then traveled up to grip much more reassuringly at the back of the man’s neck. One pulled at the brim of Roy’s hat and twisted it around. “You’re doing great, Roy. You’re doing really great.”
He nodded, letting his partner step into his space. His head fell when thumbs rubbed into the tangles on the back of his neck.
“Roy. Bud, at me.”
He shook his head.
Hot breath fanned over his face in time with the forehead that pressed against his own. The leather strap from his cap made it awkward, but neither man made any effort to move. “You’re going great, Roy. I’m so proud of you for getting through that.”
“I justー” The archer swallowed the lump in his throat. “I need it to stick this time. I can’t mess up this time.”
“You won’t.” Jason whispered.
“How could you possibly know that?”
“Cause I know you, and you’re a hard ass.” It broke the tension just enough for both of them to give a slight laugh. Then, Jason pulled back, smiling as he looked into Roy’s eyes. “You can beat this. I know you can.”
Roy swallowed and nodded. He reached forward, gripping into that shitty, high-thread count polo shirt the other man was wearing. God he hated how that one piece of clothing probably cost more than his own full outfit. Every fiber of his being craved everything he couldn’t have. He craved the absolute lack of control and massive confidence boost alcohol gave him. He craved the clarity and creativity LSD opened his eyes to. He craved the euphoric rush of cocaine, and peaceful relaxation of weed. First and foremost, he craved the mellow, the “world is beautiful” feeling, the “life is worth living” feeling…. He craved just how fucking nice heroin was. Roy felt himself shaking, as he met Jason’s eyes, and he just knew what the pleading expression on his face looked like. A glance of blue eyes over his absolute mess of an expression, and he knew Jason had figured it out too.
Lips pressed together, groundless and chapped, but enough to fill that last craving up. For now. Roy sighed and leaned in close, ignoring the voice of his sponsor in the back of his mind telling him just how stupid he was to be starting something with his best friend right now. No offence Waylon, but you’re an idiot if you don’t think this hasn’t been in the works for years, and an ass for trying to get him to stop now.
“Better?” Jason asked, pulling back just slightly.
Roy closed his eyes and took a deep breath, his senses filling with that cigarette smell that clung to his partner. “Not really. But thanks.”
“Is there a meeting tonight I can take you to?” A hand gently pushed the motorcycle helmet back to Roy. “Or I can take you in the morning. I’ll go with you.”
“Tomorrow…” Roy nodded. “I wanna go to my homegroup. It’s in Star City though.”
“Easy.” Jason grinned, and stepped back, grabbing his mask and throwing it on, before swinging a leg over his bike.
“You sure?” For the first time in what felt like all night, Roy felt that stupid, broken smirk of his form on his face again. “The early bird meeting is at seven thirty.”
That seemed to make Jason pause for a moment. Bats weren’t exactly known for being early to rise. “I’ll make it work.”
“So difficult.” He took his cap off and jammed it into the inside zipper pocket of the leather jacket, then put his own helmet on, before hopping on the bike. He gripped at the strap of Jason’s belt, curling his fingers tight around it. He wasn’t about to be caught dead wrapping his arms around the dude’s waist. “Thanks, Jaybird. I mean it.”
The engine roared to life, and he shut his eyes, once again reciting the usual prayer in his mind.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Keep coming back. It works if you work it.

Best Games of the Midyear 2018
We are already half of the way through 2018, and there have been some amazing games already released. The Shacknews staff has joined forces to put together a list of the best games to be released so far in 2018. This list is not presented in any particular order, but these are games that Shackers should pay attention to going into our Shacknews Game of the Year deliberations at the end of 2018. Please take a look at the best games of the midyear 2018.
God of War
youtube
There was something cynical about the idea of "Let's take Kratos and give him a kid." It's something that easily could have been a shallow gimmick.
Instead, God of War ushering Kratos into single fatherhood allowed Sony Santa Monica to completely reinvent the character without forsaking his past. If anything, Kratos owned up to his past and confronted some of his most problematic elements. He never ran away from what he did, but he imparted the lesson to his son that everyone should strive to be better people. "Don't be sorry, be better."
This is all in addition to one of the most satisfying open worlds of 2018 and amazingly crisp 3D combat. And while the violence wasn't quite as visceral and gory as past God of War games, it's still as impactful as its ever been. God of War is a triumph in every way. -Ozzie Mejia
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
youtube
Obsidian upped the ante with the sequel to their epic fantasy RPG Pillars of Eternity with its sequel, Deadfire, and I can’t get enough of it. The base experience has been improved on various levels, one example being the more streamlined party. The expansion into a new space also opened the game up to sea combat that reflects the games pen-and-paper RPG roots. Just like the first game, you’ll often find yourself knee deep in interesting side quests and task, some arguably more interesting than the main quest. Nevertheless, you’ll constantly be inspired to see what's around the next corner. -Charles Singletary
Dragon Ball FighterZ
youtube
I feel like everyone knew Dragon Ball FighterZ was going to be good, but it must’ve been hiding its true power level for when it launched. DBFZ is one of the most approachable fighting games to be made in years. Yet, underneath that inviting surface is an intricate and nuanced combat system that has enchanted the hardcore fighting scene as well. It doesn’t hurt that Dragon Ball is such a recognizable franchise with a cast of characters perfect for a brawler like this. Arc System Works did a fantastic job of making all of the game’s art and animated sequences look as good as the current Dragon Ball Super anime. Dragon Ball FighterZ is definitely the birth of a brand-new fighting game dynasty and I doubt we’ll see its final form any time soon. -Blake Morse
Runner3
The latest rhythmic platformer from Choice Provisions hits a lot of high points: it's lightweight and lighthearted enough to provide a potent distraction from more heavy-handed titles, and yet it presents delightfully addictive action that's perfectly suited to both short and marathon gaming sessions. Runner3 is the ultimate evolution of one of the most absurd rhythm games on the market, topping off its tight gameplay and outrageous humor with loads of unlockables, special features, hidden characters, and more. -Kevin Tucker
Conan Exiles
Thank you so very much @shacknews for 9/10 "A battle to the death with 6 naked cannibals and a giant tiger is hands down the best gaming experience I’ve had in 2018. This game is the current high water mark in open-world survival and the biggest surprise of 2018 for me so far. "
— CONAN EXILES (@ConanExiles) June 7, 2018
While it is rough around the edges and prone to the bugs and frustrations common to the survival genre, Conan Exiles manages to stand above the pack with its satisfying combat, an expansive crafting recipe progression, and lively open-world. For people who liked Minecraft, but found the adventuring aspect to be woefully under cooked, Conan Exiles provides a land full of cannibals, crocodiles, spider caves, ice temples, and creepy dungeons that offer excitement beyond building out your base. Group play and a willingness to go along with silly business is strongly encouraged. Additionally, if game quality was judged by the amount of reproductive organs on display, Conan Exiles would have a Metacritic score of two billion. -Chris Jarrard
Hunt: Showdown
youtube
Hunt: Showdown is still in early access, but the development team will likely have a full release done by the end of the year. If things continue to improve on the current pace, gamers could end up with one of the best blends of various genres to date. Hunt mixes PvE and PvP into one experience, taking elements from horror, battle royale, and survival and layering wonderful art design on top. It’s a very challenging game and the developers need to find a way to strike the perfect balance for player progression. If they do, watch this one climb the popularity charts swiftly. -Charles Singletary
Monster Hunter: World
youtube
It is a rare creature indeed that gets me to come back to it again and again in the wild world of gaming. But, I just can’t quit Monster Hunter World. I’ve put close to 200 hours into the game and I’m showing no signs of stopping. It takes everything that has always been intriguing about the Monster Hunter series and gives it all a tune-up for current-gen gamers. There’s so many nuances to the world that’s been built and I find myself discovering new details about its biology and the way the creatures interact with it. The fact that Monster Hunter World is consistently putting out new and completely free content for its millions of players doesn’t hurt either.  -Blake Morse
Pit People
The Behemoth continues to show just how versatile it can be by leaping into the real-time strategy genre. Pit People is an exquisite strategy game that pushes the genre, while also retaining The Behemoth's unique humor. Outside of the core cast, it's a test of putting together the best roster of wacky characters with their own unique functions on the battlefield. While the gameplay is solid on its own, it's the writing that makes Pit People a real treat, making it one of the funniest games of the year, as well as one of the best strategy games of 2018 so far. -Ozzie Mejia
Mario Tennis Aces
youtube
I've been waiting quite a while for a new entry in the Mario Tennis series, so a new adventure on Nintendo Switch with a story mode tickled me pink. I was thrilled to find that it took everything I love about playing tennis with Mario and his friends and expanded on it even further with new special moves, strategic plays, and an exciting roster of characters to choose from. It's some of the most fun I've had on my Switch, and even when it frustrates me, I still find myself going back to it every time I pick the system up off of its dock. This is tennis done right, and a sincere love letter from Nintendo to fans of its arcade sports titles. I'm actually thinking about playing a few matches now, after having written this. -Brittany Vincent
Subnautica
Subnautica is game about exploring uncharted waters, both literally and metaphorically. Coming to understand the events of the game, from the player's catastrophic arrival at Planet 4546B to the mysteries behind the the Alterra Corporation's exploration efforts, primarily involves surviving in increasingly dangerous scenarios. It's a fantastic experience that manages to be both entrancing and terrifying: the notion of being underwater and having a limited supply of oxygen stays at the front of the player's mind, and diving deeper involves making special considerations with regard to food, water, power, and even personal defense. In return for their efforts, the player will be able to slowly piece together the events of the Aurora's crash and learn the surprising history behind the planet's previous outposts. -Kevin Tucker
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
youtube
Warhorse Studios focused on historical accuracy and minute detail in its pursuit of creating a medieval sim with Kingdom Come: Deliverance. A second hand tug-of-war between a historian and one of the game’s developers poked holes in that accuracy, but the gameplay experience is undeniable. Kingdom Come, like a few others that will be a part of the GOTY discussion, had some significant technical issues at launch. When it worked, though, it delivered big. I’ve rarely been as immersed in an RPG’s world as I was with KCD and I’m excited to explore it more.
P.S. I do not count the save system as technical issue. It was a design choice that just didn’t go over well. -Charles Singletary
Sushi Stirker: The Way of Sushido
Finally, a game that combines my passion for combat puzzlers with my obsession with raw fish. If I had one major gripe with Nintendo’s Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido it would be that it makes me hunger for the delectable, yet costly, dish. Beyond that though, Sushi Striker really impressed me with its clever twist on Pokemon collecting and puzzle fighting. Throw in some quality anime sequences and you’ve got a tasty combination. It may have ended up being more of a sleeper hit, but it’s still a hit nonetheless and definitely worth checking out if you missed out on it during its initial launch, which was somewhat lost in the E3 mire. -Blake Morse
Detroit: Become Human
youtube
Quantic Dream's best and most riveting adventure hooked me with its brief demo ahead of its official release, and I haven't been able to get enough of it since. Connor, Kara, and Markus switch off throughout a sprawling narrative that explores various themes, and by the end I couldn't choose a favorite, as each character had grown so significantly throughout the course of the story. I laughed, I cried, and I longed for more time with the entire case (especially Connor) when the end credits rolled. Despite watching alternate paths play out on YouTube, I've gone back to see what my decisions could have wrought if I had chosen differently from time to time. It's an excellent and unique tale, with nothing else out there like it on PlayStation 4, and well worth playing, even if you're one of those sad individuals who still thinks it's "cool" to talk about David Cage's "bad writing." -Britany Vincent
Laser League
Some of the best games are the ones that don't opt for any crazy gimmickry and focus more on basic ideas. Laser League is such a simple idea on paper. It's two teams in an arena battling it out by avoiding killer lasers. It's a simplistic premise, but one that's wildly fun and builds on top of its foundation with individual classes and power-ups. Its futuristic aesthetic is the icing on the cake. -Ozzie Mejia
Sea of Thieves
youtube
Rare’s brand new IP, Sea of Thieves, has deeply divided the gaming world with one side being unenthused by the content on offer and the other falling deeply in love with the experience – and we here at Shacknews are of the latter group. There’s something so pure about the world of Sea of Thieves, from the aesthetic and color palette to the way it feels sailing across the waters, all of it evokes a sense of journey and adventure.
Outside of the launch window, Rare has continued to support the game through regular, weekly patches, bi-weekly events, and free major content drops for all players. After speaking with the developers at E3 and after seeing how they continue to interact with the playerbase, there’s a real sense of dedication to the community. If you’re yet to dive into this world, now might be the best time, especially as we approach the release of Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores, the next two major content updates for Sea of Thieves coming in July and September. -Sam Chandler
Vampyr
youtube
“Vampyr only got a 7 out of 10. How is it in the conversation for GOTY?” I see the gears turning, reader. I wrote the review myself and even suggested in the conclusion that it would be in the conversation despite the score, so let’s get right to it. Despite its technical shortcomings, Vampyr is a very entertaining game. The combat, ambiance, music, community management, and more all lend to a vampiric power-fantasy that has been sorely missing in gaming for a while. The duality of the main character is a well crafted platform for the experience too, giving players power as healer and killer while tying that into the development of the game’s playable areas. It likely won’t win the big award, but Vampyr is a very solid game that you don’t want to miss. -Charles Singletary
Fortnite
youtube
Epic Games has struck video game gold with this game. Fortnite may be the greatest pivot in the history of video games as the Early Access Save the World mode didn' take the world by storm. After clearly taking inspiration from the wildly successful PUBG, Epic brought the Battle Royale mode to their game and gave it the old Unreal polish. The game is available on pretty much every platform and is making truck tons of money for Epic Games in the process. Fortnite's developers have done a great job of keeping the game fresh with new emotes, limited-time-modes, and special events like meteors and rocket launches. Fortnite is here to stay and it certainly deserves recognition as one of the best games of the midyear. -Asif Khan
Celeste
youtube
Celeste feels like a journey of growth in more ways than one. It's about persistance, progression, and the pursuit of one's goals, even in the face of their own demons. It's a punishing platformer and one that revels in players' death counts, which skyrocket into the hundreds and thousands, but it's one that encourages players to keep trying, both with its narrative and its forgiving checkpoint system. Speaking of its narrative, it's one that's impactful to anyone who's ever doubted themselves or found themselves dealing with bouts of depression or panic attacks. It's a very human story, set atop a mountain that dabbles in the supernatural.
And beyond Madeline's quest to personal fulfillment, players can also see the progression of creator Matt Thorson's own journey, as he starts to hit his own peak of level designing potential. He's come a long way from TowerFall and it's a satisfying journey to witness. -Ozzie Mejia
Overload
youtube
From the creators of the classic PC game Descent, comes a worthy spiritual successor to the space shooter. Overload gives players six degrees of freedom along with great level design and a fine polish that this genre has been missing for decades. I loved Descent back in the day, and Overload has recaptured the excitement from the new series. Improvements to level and weapon design is immediately noticeable and the game is so dang pretty, there are times when I get killed just looking around. Overload is one of the biggest surprise games of 2018 so far and anyone on the fence about this game should give it a try. -Asif Khan
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit
youtube
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, though only a short prequel and introduction to what we'll eventually see in Life is Strange 2, is an exemplary piece of storytelling. The tale of young Chris, who's fully into pretending he's a superhero, is as heartwarming as it is deeply emotional. The seemingly lighthearted story peppers in a cautionary tale of child abuse as well as the struggles people face after losing their partners and jobs one right after another. It's a fantastic foundation to build Life is Strange 2 on, and it kept me glued to my seat the entire time I explored Chris's home and got to know him as well as my own little brother. I wanted to protect him from all harm and give him something to look forward to, so I hope he plays a massive role in the next game from Dontnod Entertainment, as he's too precious of a character to give up on. -Brittany Vincent

It has held nine of its last 53 events in the Philippines at locations such as the historic Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City and the state-of-the-art SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
ONE Championship returns to Manila on Friday, 21 April to host its tenth live Philippine event dubbed “ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY”. The promotion has prepared ten marquee match-ups for its blockbuster card.
Loren Mack, ONE Championship’s Vice President for Public Relations and Communications, bared that ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY is the organization’s special offering to its Filipino audience because of the ending support received by the league since its first event in the Philippines.
“Truly, it is ONE Championship’s ultimate pleasure to return to Manila where we always get a warm reception every time we are here. From pre-event festivities to fight night, every Filipino stays glued watching us. ONE Championship sincerely appreciates the support, which is why we make sure to provide the best card for our Filipino audience,” he said.
According to Mack, ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY will be the biggest MMA event in Philippine history to date due to its stacked match lineup.

“We have the Philippines’ beloved hero in Eduard Folayang defending his coveted title for the first time in front of a sold-out Manila crowd against Malaysia’s very own Ev Ting. Fans around the world rallied to see this match-up, and they are going to get it on Friday,” Mack said about the card’s headliner.
Aside from Folayang, four Team Lakay fighters are likewise slated on the undercard of ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY, featuring former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario as he takes on lightweight stalwart Jaroslav Jartim of Czech Republic
Meanwhile, Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon shares the ONE Championship cage with fellow ex-world title challenger Toni “Dynamite” Tauru of Finland in a three-round bantamweight encounter.

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump is stuck in his own skull.
He’s unreachable.
“He lives inside his head, where he runs the same continuous loop of conflict with people he turns into enemies for the purposes of his psychodrama,” says Trump biographer Michael D’Antonio.
Because Trump holds Thor’s hammer, with its notably short handle, we must keep trying to figure out his strange, perverse, aggrieved style of reasoning. So we’re stuck in Trump’s head with him.
It’s a very cluttered place to be, a fine-tuned machine spewing a torrent of chaos, cruelty, confusion, farce and transfixing craziness. Of course, this is merely the observation of someone who is “the enemy of the American people,” according to our president.
President Trump likes maps. Once it was John King’s analysis of the CNN electoral map that Trump obsessed over. Now he wants policy papers heavy on maps and graphics and not dense with boring words.
So let’s visualize those phrenology skulls mapping distinct faculties in the brain, the ones that spur chastity, sympathy, philanthropy, philoprogenitiveness, mirthfulness, sincerity, grace, morality, generosity, kindness, benevolence.
Then think of the president’s skull, which is stuffed with other humours: insecurity, insincerity, victimhood, paranoia, mockery, self-delusion, suspicion, calculation, illogic, vindictiveness, risk, bullying, alimentiveness, approbativeness, vitativeness. Gall, divided into three parts.
It seems that at some point Trump decided that he didn’t really trust anyone else. While that was a reasonable strategy for a New York real estate developer who was always trying to rip off so-called partners, it’s obviously a limitation when you’re president.
Like all narcissists, he doesn’t like to be told if he’s screwing up, so he surrounds himself with people who don’t tell him.
The president is still oblivious about the shudder that went through the land, beyond the base that likes seeing the press jackals flayed, during his gobsmacking 77-minute masterpiece of performance art in the White House Thursday.
It was more Norma Desmond than Norman Vincent Peale, the Trump family pastor who wrote “The Power of Positive Thinking” and influenced Donald’s thinking as a child.
If Trump is the swanning, aging diva in the mansion, trapped in a musty miasma, Steve Bannon must be Max, the German director turned butler who massages Norma’s ego. In “Sunset Hair Boulevard,” Bannon is the one who encourages his diva to cling to a delusional world where she is still big and Jeff Zucker and Chuck Schumer are lightweights.
This leaves us in the role of Joe Gillis, who makes one bad choice and ends up floating face down in the swimming pool after Norma loses it and offs him.
The more Trump fixates on an opponent he vanquished months ago and whines about vote tallies and crowd sizes, the more he seems small and insecure.
The more he loudly insists on Putin’s charms, the loonier he sounds.
The more he defends the odd duck Michael Flynn, saying he fired him only because Flynn misled Mike Pence about talking sanctions with the Russian ambassador before Pence went on “Face the Nation,” the more it raises the question: Why didn’t Trump himself tell Pence when the White House counsel told him?
And the more Trump decries America’s lack of innocence in the world relative to Russia and turns journalists into whipping boys and targets of hate, the more he sounds like a thuggy dictator himself.
“When Trump was a kid, he was obsessed with intimidating other boys,” D’Antonio says. “Prior to a ballgame he would ceremoniously eat an orange as if it was an apple, biting into the bitter rind and chewing up the whole thing. The whole idea was to psych out his opponents.”
As presidential historian Michael Beschloss reminded me, the previous gold standard for a president showing contempt for reporters at a news conference was Nixon during Watergate in 1973, when he said just after the Saturday Night Massacre: “Don’t get the impression that you arouse my anger. You see, one can only be angry with those he respects.”
Trump got into another megalomaniacal “Me the People” swivet Friday, tweeting the “FAKE NEWS media” was “the enemy of the American people!” So Trump is even using the rhetoric of Lenin? Putin is lovely and the press is the Evil Empire?
Beschloss riposted with this tweet: “On December 1972 tape, Nixon told Kissinger, ‘The press is the enemy, the establishment is the enemy, the professors are the enemy.’”
By suddenly calling his own scream-of-consciousness press conference, Trump was out to prove that he — not Sean Spicer, Kellyanne Conway or Stephen Miller — is the top salesman in the office. Only he can close the deal.
“It was true Trump,” D’Antonio said. “He thinks confidence is more important than competence and attitude matters more than aptitude. Others may be exhausted by the frenzy. You can see it in their drawn faces and pained expressions. Donald is energized by the fight. It also explains why he expects others to accept a bashing and be fine with him the next day.”
When Trump was corrected on the obvious whopper that his Electoral College vote was the “biggest Electoral College win since Ronald Reagan,” his only defense was, “I was given that information.”
Spin is the bitcoin of Washington. But Trump is in another dimension. He has distorted the truth for so long, he now seems routinely untethered from reality.
As Trump biographer Tim O’Brien puts it, “He’s the emperor of chaos.”

SundayReview | OP-ED COLUMNIST Trapped in Trump’s Brain Maureen Dowd FEB. 18, 2017 Continue reading the main storyShare This Page Share Tweet Email More Save 45 Photo Donald Trump at a news conference on Thursday. Credit Andrew Harnik/Associated Press WASHINGTON — Donald Trump is stuck in his own skull. Continue reading the main story ADVERTISEMENT Continue reading the main story So let’s visualize those phrenology skulls mapping distinct faculties in the brain, the ones that spur chastity, sympathy, philanthropy, philoprogenitiveness, mirthfulness, sincerity, grace, morality, generosity, kindness, benevolence. The more Trump fixates on an opponent he vanquished months ago and whines about vote tallies and crowd sizes, the more he seems small and insecure. ADVERTISEMENT Continue reading the main story The more he loudly insists on Putin’s charms, the loonier he sounds. The whole idea was to psych out his opponents.” As presidential historian Michael Beschloss reminded me, the previous gold standard for a president showing contempt for reporters at a news conference was Nixon during Watergate in 1973, when he said just after the Saturday Night Massacre: “Don’t get the impression that you arouse my anger. You see, one can only be angry with those he respects.” Trump got into another megalomaniacal “Me the People” swivet Friday, tweeting the “FAKE NEWS media” was “the enemy of the American people!” So Trump is even using the rhetoric of Lenin? Putin is lovely and the press is the Evil Empire?
