Picking my favorite shinies because I think I should get into shiny hunting or do a run with my favorite shinies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like Dragonair, Hisuian Braviary and the Treecko line. The Treecko line has really nice teal colors but dammit they look high as fuck with those red eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Special shoutouts to Nidoking which has both a nice color and I really enjoy the swap with Nidoqueen (although Nidoqueen throws in that horrible green), and specifically pre-gen 8 Reuniclus which got kinda ruined by the transparent texture they gave it.

yesterday i managed to hatch a shiny horsea in my copy of emerald version!!!!!! this shiny is one that means a WHOLE LOT to me for so many reasons and i am absolutely gonna start up what will hopefully be a saga of posts related to him.
the gist of it is that this little one is, first and foremost, a nod to my beloved dnd oc, reides. secondly, he is gonna be my first earnest attempt at the ribbon master challenge!
the ribbon master challenge is a really fun - yet really difficult! - challenge which consists of trying to get as many marks/ribbons on one pokemon as possible (basically, from their origin generation to the current one). there are many resources related to this challenge, my favorite one being athis' ribbon handbook. you can see a lot of people talking about this challenge on the pokemon ribbons subreddit as well as in random places online (like this post right here LMAO). there are also quite a few videos about ribbon master challenge attempts on youtube, too; again, my personal favorite one is the story of toast the scizor.
anyway, i talked about potentially attempting the challenge back when i successfully manipulated gen4's rng for a shiny of my fav mythical pokemon, manaphy - which i also named reides, as i associate manaphy with him. i eventually strayed from that idea, however, because i really, really want my first ribbon master to have the gen3 ribbons; most importantly, the hoenn contest ones. (this is 100% just a personal thing - ribbon masters that are from gen4 onwards are obviously still incredibly awesome and i still wanna try the challenge out on my beloved manaphy at some point. i just have a lot of nostalgia associated with gen3's ribbons so i want my first attempt at the challenge to include the grind for them.) that being said, i didn't want to stray from the initial concept of putting it on a pokemon that i associate with reides, so…
that's where this horsea comes into the picture!
Tumblr media
i've associated reides with the whole horsea line for a loooong time - longer than i've associated him with manaphy, tbh! i even have a post mentioning that i hatched eggs for a shiny one - also named reides - in ultra sun. i struggled a lot with if i wanted to evolve that horsea fully or not, ultimately deciding to keep him as a baby. but i always wanted to catch another one which i'd evolve fully. i mean... look at this thang.
Tumblr media
shiny kingdra absolutely rules, and the royal theme that it has going on is, again, very much up reides' alley. it seemed like my procrastination re: actually hunting for that second shiny horsea actually paid off, in this case, because i realized it'd be sick if my ribbon master was a shiny kingdra. that way, my other shiny horsea can remain as a unique hunt, too.
beyond my shiny requirement, i wanted the horsea to be male, like reides, and for him to have a nature that suited reides' personality. since i already have a brave manaphy, i was torn between quirky or bold for him, but i ultimately decided on bold. so... a shiny, bold, male horsea was the goal. this isn't an impossible shiny hunt by any means, but... well... <3 let's just say i wasn't in the mood to phase on tons and tons of different shiny horseas that didn't meet my somewhat-specific criteria. frankly speaking, it would sour the entire experience for me. add emerald's wacky rng to the picture and it just... wasn't fun to even think about. so i figured that i'd take yet another page from my manaphy's book and that i'd rng manipulate for my ideal horsea. furthermore, i decided that i'd try to hatch my horsea in a cool spot - hence the 'seafloor cavern' met data. (sadly, since i'm transferring him up through the generations, this data will eventually get replaced with a blanket 'hoenn region' line - but i still wanted to do it!!!)
once i had a general Plan of Action, it was time to execute it. a few weeks ago, i made a post about learning how to rng manip in gen3. in that post, i showed you guys my shiny treecko, ivy, and vaguely mentioned in the tags that having the means of shiny hunting in emerald opened up a lot of ribbon master challenges... but i didn't mention my true goal of learning the inner workings of gen3; namely, reides. LMAO. by shiny hunting for that treecko, i was able to deduce my tid and sid combo, which would aid me in my future rng-based shiny hunts in that particular game file.
i then had to play through the entirety of emerald's plot. at first, i dreaded this, since i wanted to grab my horsea asap and get right into the challenge - but it was a TON of fun! i kept practicing different rng hunts and ended up getting four more rng-based shinies in addition to my shiny starter and reides. plus it was just plain nice to re-visit gen3's storyline after all these years. once i got the super rod in mossdeep city (since horsea is a super rod-specific encounter) and my seventh badge (since i needed to be able to use dive so that i could get to the seafloor cavern), i caught a male horsea and a female horsea, popped 'em in the daycare, and - through MUCH trial and error which could, in itself, end up as a huge post - managed to hatch this perfect little horsea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
given all of the setup that went into getting reides, i knew that i wanted him to be on my very first team that beat the hall of fame. it was only fair, considering that the team pretty much existed because of him! and, while this post is focused on reides, trust & believe that i still developed a TON of fondness for the rest of my lovely storyline team! i couldn't have possibly gotten reides his first ribbon without the help of ivy the sceptile, popsicle the cradily, metal the aggron, chimney the camerupt, and miku the flygon!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
next on the emerald agenda is ev training reides. i am going to be training him alongside a latios named albatross, a beldum named origin, and a bagon whose name is currently pending as i try to think of something! i've never ev trained in a gen3 game before, so... fingers crossed that it goes well and that i can keep count of the encounters without fuckin up! ;LDFSGKD;FKG i'm ev training so that i can get the effort ribbon on reides but ALSO so that we are at full power for taking on emerald's battle tower afterwards. i'm SUPER nervous about doing this, as i have never attempted the battle tower before, but i'm hoping that it'll go okay!
in addition to aaaaall of this chaos going on in emerald version, i dusted off my good ol' wii and started a replay of an INCREDIBLEEEE game called pokemon colosseum, since i'll need to send reides over there eventually to get a ribbon for clearing 100 battles in a row over on mt battle. (luckily, i still have the necessary hardware from my childhood for doing that.) mt battle is going to be seeing a lot of me, as i'll also need to grind for pokecoupons there so that i can buy special berries which will help him in becoming a contest pro back over in hoenn. colosseum's plot also gave me the chance to soft-reset for a bold-natured suicune that will probably get ev trained too, and who will likely join reides in all of his future battle tower endeavors. i named that suicune after reides' in-universe god, 'persana.'
so... yeah! the setup for this challenge alone has been A Lot but i can honestly say that i've been having so much fun with it. i feel like i'm interacting with like... every single aspect of gen3 at the moment. it's totally revitalized my love for pokemon as a whole and i'm really hoping that i can stick to it and complete the challenge in its entirety!

To my fellow players of PMD not-on-handhelds:
Is there a semi-easy way to make your partner into a shiny for Blue Rescue Team or does it require lots of knowledge of coding? Bc I really want to replay it with my Eve (Eevee/Vaporeon) and Tree (Shiny Treecko line) pair but if I played it normally it wouldn’t feel right without him being the right color.
I know nothing about romhacking (would this count?), as I am very new to emulators in general, so if this isn’t something semi-straightforward I’ll probably back down from it and play it normally. I know the PMD Sprite Repository does have shiny recolorations of the sprites and icons but I don’t have any clue how to go about actually using them.
Please help🥲offering 100 Poké and an Oran Berry!

273-275 - Seedot Line
Tbh I forget Seedot exists half the time. I don't catch it because usually I pick Treecko or use my Beloved, Breloom.
...I say that. I've played ORAS three or four times in total. Of those times, I picked Treecko once and used Breloom zero times. That's still more than Seedot.
I digress. I noticed with Nuzleaf's normal shiny the hue changes to purple in the brown part, so for Shiftry I decided to incorporate drastic hue shifts (pun not intended) so you'll notice parts get a lot more pink rather than a gradual slide to red.
Another side note, I really love Shiftry's shiny. I gotta hunt it one day.

As I thought, I just needed to get a Chimchar outbreak to isolate it from Scorbunny and then the shiny just fell right into my lap. It's a bit subtle from a distance, I think the entire line would have benefited if the flames changed color. Taco Bell the Snow Frolicker, which is actually pretty funny because one of my Duraludon has the same mark and I caught it in the same spot.
Sobble, Fennekin, Treecko, and the infamous Cyndaquil remain.

If I might trouble you, a review of my beloved treecko line? I fell in love with ashes grovyle and have never looked back
(Note: This is the last review request in the inbox right now. If anyone has a request, now's the time to send it in; otherwise, I might just randomly generate some Pokemon to review or something.)
Tumblr media
Back before we got starters with super specific themes, we got the occasional starter that was just a really nicely designed animal with a type applied, as is the case with the Treecko line here. I don't mind either method, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for starters that are just cool monsters, and this line delivers. Or maybe I'm just biased because I like geckos. Who knows.
Anyway, Treecko's design is solid. The leafy tail is nothing special, but I like how it curls a bit at the end for some extra flair. The reptilian eyes are always appreciated, and that red underbelly is to die for.
My only real issue with it—and this is minor, mind you—is that the snout always looked weirdly bulbous to me, having a distinctive nose instead of the head just narrowing into a snout like its evolutions. It by no means ruins the design for me, but it sticks out never-the-less. Also, that line on the underbelly serves no purpose (other to tie it into its evos more I guess, which really isn't needed anyway). For the most part however, this design is really solid.
Also, side note: was anyone gonna tell me that Treecko's shiny is beautiful or did I just have to find that out myself?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have to admit, I always liked Grovyle more than Sceptile (and no, it has nothing to do with the anime or PMD). I'll get into it more when we get to Sceptile, but I just feel like Grovyle's design is much more streamlined and visually striking.
I love the flow of the leaves on the head and tail; it looks like some kind of feathered raptor, which is an aesthetic I'm always down for. Plus the red underbelly still looks great, and adds some much needed color to the design. Mostly importantly, it fits and transitions between Treecko and Sceptile well while still having its own unique flair, which is something many other starter middle evos fail at.
Also, sometimes it's drawn in this really funky way that gives it a longer face and longer leaves, which frankly I'm a big fan of:
Tumblr media
I only have two small complaints, both of which are nitpicks. First, once again, that underbelly stripe isn't needed, seemingly only existing for the sake of the final evo. And secondly, I wouldn't have minded seeing three leaves on the tail, seeing as Treecko has two, Sceptile has A Lot, and Grovyle's arms already have three anyway. But those are minor; at the end of the day, while the entire line's good, Grovyle is by far the standout member of the line.
Tumblr media
While we unfortunately lose a bit of the dinosaur look with Sceptile, I do like the overall design a lot. The laid-back expression is a nice change of pace from the standard angry expression most final evos sport, and you can't really go wrong with a bipedal lizard dinosaur with leaves. Overall, it's quite nice.
However, I do feel like there are a few elements in the design that could've been refined a bit more, as well as a few things that feel like downgrades from Grovyle.
First: That random V-shaped line on the torso. Why is that there, exactly? If it was a red stripe you could make the second red stripe a V as well and have some parallel elements, but instead it's just There for no reason.
Secondly, the colors. Unlike on Grovyle, the leaves on the wrists are the same color as the body, while the tail leaves remain different. Why...? Same thing with the hind claws; why are they the same green as the body, instead of being yellow, a color already in the design anyway (all-green could work if they just didn't have the dividing line, like on the hands)? Even just the way the red reduces; I loved the red, and I feel like more of it could've been incorporated into this design without needing to really change much.
Also, the tail always felt a bit too overly-detailed to me, at least compared to the body; maybe if the wrist leaves had the same "double" look it wouldn't feel so off-balanced.
And finally, I don't know if this is just me, but the placement of the seed pods always felt weird. Why not put them on the tail, seeing as that's where the leaves are? They just feel kind of pointless as-is, even if I like the additional yellow. Like I said, the design is solid as a whole, but these little elements make me prefer Grovyle's design just a bit more.
Tumblr media
The mega kind of fixes some of the stuff that bugs me about regular Sceptile, but it also has some elements that don't quite work.
First, more red is very much appreciated. And secondly, I love how the tail can be shot like a missile, as a nod to how IRL geckos can perform autotomy and drop their tails if needed. This also has the added bonus of making the seed pods feel much more purposeful, as they now visually lead up to the tail and serve as indicators of how close the "missile" is to firing. Super cool, love it.
However, like a lot of megas, it feels like a lot of design elements were changed just Because. For example, those random chunks taken out of the head and arm leaves; I guess it's supposed to look battle-worn, but that doesn't work unless the damage is from it battling a hole punch. Same goes for the X-shaped leaves on the chest; it's different, but not better, and it doesn't enhance the design at all. Sometimes, less is more, and the changes to the tail and the extra red feel like they're more than enough to cary the design as-is.
Also, while I like the idea of the tail stripes a lot, something about it bugs me visually. I think it's because the back stripe leads the eye down and through to the tail; except this flow is then abruptly cut-off by the horizontal stripes, creating a bit of tension. I feel like either the back stripe should've just gone straight down the tail, with the stripes being added to the underbelly from the front (seeing as that's where they were to begin with), or the back stripe should've been dropped in favor of keeping the tail stripes. Regardless, those two elements are good separately, but don't quite work together.
In other words, it's a good design, but it's brought down a bit by unnecessary details and changes that don't serve a purpose.
So as a whole, I'd say that this is a great starter line, and one of my personal favorites. Treecko is lovely, and Grovyle is definitely the best of the line. Sceptile is good but a little bit of a downgrade, and while the mega brings more of a concept and cohesion to the design, it's also a bit over-cluttered. Regardless, these are some excellent geckos.

A cursory sprite repainting has taught me the following about the Treecko line's shinies:
Sceptile's leaves absolutely should be red like the rest of the line.
A mint green skin tone (Grovyle in Gen IV) is superior to the original odd cyan (Gen III).
Shiny > Normal for countershading.
The eyes need to be less orangey.
Ways to improve Sceptile: have head look more like an evolution of Grovyle's, get rid of the back nodules, make arm leaves cooler (maybe like Gallade's blades), give narrower hips (to emphasize agility).
Treecko is awful, but I already knew this.

Pokémon mystery dungeon will always be my favorite side Pokémon games. Currently replaying XD and it makes me remember how much I loved this game.
It has such a good story line and the remakes made the game even better. Also keeping the friend areas as well. Adding rare qualities and even making shiny Pokémon in the game(well I know shiny celebi was in Explorers but still). Everything about this game is amazing. Plus the refuge arc is my favorite plus Absol <3
It’s made me think of my teams over every mystery dungeon game.
Red/blue:
Team Stargazers
Ven the eevee
Neku the Cyndaquil

Skii the Skitty
Pip the Piplup

Hmmm how about mudkip?
Imma type this before bed, but if you think of any more you wanna hear about, I can always answer in the morning!
Mudkip is the pokemon I always go with in the PMD games, either with Treecko as a partner (in the explorers game, mostly), or Pikachu (rescue team games.)
I usually name Mudkip "Mudbud", regardless of whatever game I have it in, whether it's PMD or one of the main line games.
I really like the little axolotl-cheek-thing Mudkip has going on, and the fact that the shiny is pink makes me smile (because pink is a pretty happy color for me. Makes me think of bubblegum.)
Uhh pbbtbtbt... I've never gone through a PMD game without a Mudkip, so it's special to me in that regard. I can’t think of much else to say, other than that.
Treecko is my preferred trainer-pokemon, so I don’t usually have Mudkip on my team.

So last week I bought a multi pack set of the Hoenn starters from Target as a form of self love/a treat.
Best impulse buy I've ever had.
But then I had the crazy idea to buy another set and paint them their shiny colors and since my SO is abroad for the next few weeks there was no one to stop me.
I'm only done with the Mudkip line so far. Even though the colors are technically not perfect, I'm pretty impressed and proud of myself so far ngl.

Tiers in Pokemon are so fucking fake like they created an entire new tier after the release of ORAS because mega rayquaza was JUST that OP and most legendary Pokemon find themselves in the “Uber” tier with a handful of mega evolutions and then Aegislash and Blaziken for some reason, but the “Uber” tier is also fake because mega metagross is on there but regular metagross isn’t and I beat a mega metagross that was over 10 levels stronger than me in ORAS with my regular metagross because Steven is an idiot and I had Earthquake

The original shiny design of Grovyle actually shows a design element that I enjoy, which is that the teal color used for the main body is slightly darker and more blue toned than that of shiny Treecko. I think that the slight change of color over the evolutions looks really nice and blends the line together.
For my version, I kept the pale golden color for the main body, with a red-toned pink for an accent color. I made the main body colors slightly more orange than the last one, since I wanted to do a similar but less noticeable blend of colors for my version.
