the thing about culture that's difficult for a lot of people it seems to me is that "culture" is not some ontologically coherent Blob where you can sit at the table and someone will serve it to you and you get to just sit there and Receive it. or, it's not something you can dig up and carefully extract unchanged, if you sit carefully enough at your books, and then put on your mantle to admire. i'm a motherfucker whose career is about digging things up from books so i get the appeal, and yet that's not what Culture is, because culture is what you Do. so you already have one. what food do you eat? where do you live? what rituals do you perform? do you take your shoes off when you go inside?

culture is distinct from religion and ethnicity (though obviously it's interrelated with both), and deeply related to the place you live now and its customs and foodways and norms for politeness and hospitality, and what other populations live around you in the place you live now. trying to connect to the mystical immigrant old-country past of your ancestors is unlikely to get you the results you're looking for - culture is something you do every day and i promise you already have one. and you're already doing it. which means that you can also just as easily change the things you do if you don't like them.

#like my family is bicultural and not biracial AND i grew up in a different part of the country than the US side of my family did. #AND there are additional complications for me specifically but like. my dad makes amazing southern food but is limited by what #is easy to get in new england. my mom is horrified by the immigrant-american versions of food she's used to. this is normal and natural. #the old-country culture has changed without the populations who left and they have their own vested interest in what that past looks like.

ok i was looking through my notes and this one made me laugh a lot like i almost don't want to spoil it in case i ever write it. LOL

so the premise of this fic is that angus mcdonald (who is at this point say like 13-14 years old) comes home from school over spring break to discover that one of his family members has suddenly died. 

gasp!

i want to say it's taako but i think actually it's lucretia. lucretia died, which is strange for a number of reasons, like she's old but not that old, and all evidence is pointing to the fact that foul play might have been involved.

so now angus has to solve her murder.

lup, barry, and kravitz are away on a cult stake-out, no service in the spooky necromantic keep, so they can't help out—no checking in on her soul in the astral plane, etc. angus has to do this the old-fashioned way. strangely, magnus and merle keep alternating between being very sad and suspiciously blasé about their very good friend dying. and taako… well, that's complicated.

i mean, talk about complicated; lucretia's kind of a controversial figure—was it someone looking for revenge after losing a loved one to the relic wars? someone angry that she erased their memories of a beloved family member? one of boylands' kids, maybe? it couldn't have been—taako?

and i can't stress this enough: the tone of the fic and the way it's framed would be such that the reader believes that lucretia has actually died. the reader is going along with angus for the ride, trying to piece together what actually happened, almost like, a little noir but mostly clue-style, in the days leading up to her funeral, where angus gets to do a dramatic confrontation with her killer.

you think it's building to the reveal that taako really did kill lucretia—but that can't be it, right? that's wild! they've got beef, but he wouldn't really, would he?

well. you're right! he didn't!

because lucretia *wasn't* murdered, angus says. and this isn't a funeral at all. is it, ma'am?

lucretia sits up from where she was lying, arms crossed, eyes closed, in her casket. and she says, booyah.

cue magic. sparkles from prestidigitation a la taako. balloons. gifts. a banner reveals itself. it reads: HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANGUS!

that's right. it wasn't a murder. for a boy detective, it was the greatest gift of all. the gift of a murder mystery. a murder mystery birthday party. booyah

Today I saw a two story house with the first floor painted green and the second floor yellow, and not the prettiest shades of those colors.

It probably explains a lot about me that my mother's response to the pic of the house was "Great home, we should buy it. Love the colors."

This duet is so heartbreaking (the fact that the vocal lines remain completely in parallel throughout is such a great effect, in harmony but forever separated) and I really love the way they staged it here, mirroring the blocking of the garden scene. It's like they're imagining they could start over and actually do things better and it's THE SADDEST. It's kind of ironic because I really, really do not like the way the earlier scenes between these two were played, but this production has the absolute best prison scene out of the ones I've watched.
