I am having muu thoughts
#.mimiming ❜#my milgram thoughts#basically about how she. just goes along with things#like her idea of friendship being 'letting your friends do whatever they want and giving them things (haruka and her school friends)'#she reminds a bit of mahiru#going along with popular ideas about love and friendship and how it should be#instead of like. communicating with their boyfriend / friends#she's also sort of. how do i say it. insensitive? im not sure uh#like yk in after pain she responds to her friend saying they like what she gave them with smth like 'i dont need it anymore but im glad you#like it' like. i dont know but thats sort of. do you usually tell people that this is something you dont want when giving it to them?#she does the same with haruka ('i gave him a hairclip i dont wear anymore')#like. i dont think decent hearted people who know her would mind since she means well but her friends. bullies.#they would see it as her sitting in her high horse. especially if she speaks like that often#there's also her idea of bullying 'ive never hit anyone or pored water on them'#and im pretty sure thats not all bullying is??#like. her friends did bully that girl in the rooftop and she was also there. and WE know thats bullying#but i dont think shes aware?? its like. she has a certain idea of how friendship is. she has a certain idea of what bullying is#she doesn't know how far is too far and how little is too little and whats socially acceptable#shes like fuuta in that aspect he didn't know when to stop when exactly he went too far#she also has like. this idea of what the victim is supposed to be like. yk. small cute was bullied for seemingly no reason except jealousy#her thoughts are less 'what they did was wrong because bullying is wrong' but more 'what *i* did wasnt wrong so they must be wrong because#*I* am the victim they must be the. whatever the opposite of victim is'#but its not like shes completely blind to the idea that she was in the wrong#in inmf shes shown to be the queen bee centre of attention leading others along destroying them when they don't follow#any instance of her getting bullied are completely gone in the mv#sorry i forgot where i was going with this#i am simply thinking about her#do you now see why i don't even attempt to make character analysises?

So, Tsubaki talked about the Count?? But he hadn’t been captured yet, because he SAW Kuro kill him, and I’m pretty damn sure Tsubaki didn’t plan to get the Count dead, he’s way too angry about it. Though there’s every chance that the Count planned it all, I guess, he did found C3 after all, maybe he told Tsubaki to tell C3 the stuff about the curse and claimed it was to dissuade them etc.
Also, does that mean Kuro was just lying in that alley, sleeping, for 100 years?? And no one picked him up for 100 years?? Though he seemed pretty acquainted with new tech and stuff. Though maybe he wasn’t physically sleeping there but like, not quite existing for those 100 years.

*Trigger Warnings for this post discussing self harm and suicide*
So I was talking with @mgjong about Mahiru, and we noticed a few things regarding her story that I wanted to go more in detail with and highlight! First, I wanted to talk about Mahiru’s behavior during her T1 VD:
Once Es gets to the heart of the conversation and starts reminding Mahiru about her crime, the tone notably shifts here, along with Mahiru’s reaction. Her words are trailing off, her voice is notably more subdued, and of course, she does not deny that she did "kill" someone:
Tumblr media
And then, Mahiru changes the subject, with Es even pointing it out and wondering why she’s doing this. The topics she starts talking about are very interesting too:
Mahiru: “So first things first, you should gather up all your courage and be completely transparent about yourself. Doing so will make your partner feel at ease. And they’ll start opening up about themselves more.”
Tumblr media
What interesting topics to talk about Mahiru! Communication and transparency? Wanting your partner to open up? Why would you bring up those kinds of things here? Right after Es mentioned your crime? Were you doing it subconsciously because you were reminded of the time when you couldn't do this? Specifically for your boyfriend in mind? I don't know, it's just very interesting how this is the very first topic about love that she brings up in her VD.
Mahiru's bf:
Speaking of her bf, do I think this guy is a saint? No, definitely not. Do I think he’s some asshole who deserved to die? No, I don’t think that either. To me, the bf is just another guy. He’s human, and he failed to communicate his boundaries with Mahiru, which contributed to their conflict.
Clearly, we don’t know much about this guy, outside of Mahiru’s perception of him, but here’s how I personally interpret this guy and the role he plays in Mahiru’s story:
1. Mahiru's bf was just someone who failed to communicate and establish his boundaries with Mahiru, with his mental health getting worse as time went on for their relationship.
2. Mahiru's bf had his own mental health and self-harm issues before he had met Mahiru, which were made worse because of their relationship.
I don't think these two options have to be mutually exclusive either. But I do think there's a bit of evidence that points to her bf having mental health issues before. In one of the magazine scans in TIHTBILWY and in Q16 of her T2 interrogation, Mahiru notes that she met her bf on the university terrace, which seems innocuous enough with how Mahiru describes it:
Tumblr media
From user @shima1408 on YouTube:
Tumblr media
But in ILY, Mahiru's bf has also been shown to have blood on his clothing while both of them are in the forest. It is possible that he could've gotten injured while they were walking through the forest, but more importantly, Mahiru does not have any blood on her clothing. Why is Mahiru the one not injured then, but her bf is? Did he inflict those wounds on himself? Why was he on the university terrace that fateful day he and Mahiru met? Did he fall in love with Mahiru because he thought she was the one? A fated partner who stopped him on that day and could give him another chance at a happy life?
Tumblr media
So I do think it's a possibility that this guy had mental health problems before he had met Mahiru, which she inevitably made worse due to her love. He literally could’ve just been on the terrace chilling, but the meeting detail is still pretty odd to point out. It also stands out from all of Mahiru’s existing fluff dialogue and romanticization of the event and is even noted again in an interrogation question in T2, despite having been mentioned before.
But regardless of whether or not he did, Mahiru did not recognize how her love caused a strain on her bf's mental health. So when Mahiru became more obsessive and overbearing as time went on, as well as her bf not being able to communicate his needs and establish those boundaries with her, they both ended up being mutually toxic to each other as a result of this miscommunication.
Again, this is why I think she continued to emphasize “getting to know the other person better” and “being transparent” to Es in her T1 VD, because she had failed to do this with her bf before. Not only did she change the subject to avoid talking about her sin, but she also switched to a topic she knew deep down she failed to do with her bf, so she ends up compensating for it through her conversation with Es.
Cake:
The cake in ILY obviously represents love, but it also represents hurt and pain (as shown with how Mahiru feeds the cake/rat to her bf). Because both of them are shown to be feeding the cake to each other, it shows that in this conflict, blame cannot be placed on one or the other entirely. They had both failed in the relationship, despite genuinely loving each other.
Mahiru's bf feeds her a small piece, which she takes happily. He's careful with it, making sure the piece doesn't fall it to the ground. An important thing to note: Mahiru eats the slice willingly (Mahiru is so willing to accept that pain too, huh?), and her bf does not force her to eat it:
Tumblr media
But Mahiru gives him a much bigger piece with no hesitation. Because she thinks that's what he wants. She thinks that more of her love will help quell his exhaustion, his pain. So she feeds him a bigger, more overwhelming slice of cake. She's careless, and the slice could fall so easily. And what does she do? Force her bf to eat the cake. She does not give him a choice to not accept it.
Tumblr media
Suicide:
Now to the main setting in ILY: it’s a literal forest, which seems to allude to the Aokigahara Forest aka the "Suicide Forest" as it's known for in real life. We know that Mahiru's bf died from suicide based on ILY and the Undercover shot where he's missing his shoe, but we still don't know the reason why Mahiru was shown to be with him before his suicide. This leads me into thinking two possible scenarios on what possibly happened:
1: Mahiru’s bf was planning to kill himself, and Mahiru somehow found out about it and tried to join him, but had failed in doing so.
2: Both Mahiru and her bf were planning a "shinjū" (lover’s suicide) together, with Mahiru being unsuccessful with the attempt.
I am leaning more towards possibility #2 because of how it would fit in with Mahiru’s tendency to "share pain" as something she views as love. Since the lover's suicide is a concept that matches this sort of thing, I wouldn't put it past Mahiru and her bf to go along with this idea, and it was just that Mahiru was the one who survived this while her bf did not. Lover's suicides are also a thing common in literature, so it's definitely something Mahiru would find and know about given her literature and romance novel associations.
Other interesting details pointing to this in ILY: Mahiru's bow around her neck and the way it is here in ILY is very odd, like it’s supposed to be some kind of noose around her neck. It doesn’t even seem like it can normally come undone like that while they were trekking through the forest, especially since the bow itself is usually fastened and tied up neatly in the outfit she wears with it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mahiru is also shown to be barefoot, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense? Why are you barefoot like your bf is, Mahiru? What is the reason for matching with your bf, who is about to commit suicide in this forest? Were you going to go along with him? Why were you even there in the first place, Mahiru?
Tumblr media
Both of these theories could still work though! Whether it be them planning the suicide from the start, or her joining in willingly, I think both of these examples highlight how much little self-regard Mahiru has for her own life. Mahiru has established that she would do anything her lover does (including harmful behaviors such as smoking), and she would do anything for love itself at that. Mahiru would continue to endanger herself if it was for the sake of love, so it doesn't seem too far fetched that she would go along with something so extreme and life ending at that:
Tumblr media
And what else does Mahiru say about love, the ultimate form of it? Being always together. Lover's suicides are often done with the intent of being reunited again in heaven and in the next life. A method such as this would definitely help Mahiru and her bf be together forever, right?
Tumblr media
How interesting though, that she still does not quite understand why her bf isn't here anymore. Isn't the ultimate form of love always being together? So why then, is he not here anymore? She knows she’s responsible, that she had done something wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But she was just showing her love. And yet, just why?
Why is he not here anymore?

MILGRAM Best Song Tournament, Round 1, Match 3 THROW DOWN vs. THIS IS HOW TO BE IN LOVE WITH YOU
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda for both options under the cut!
Tumblr media
Propaganda for THROW DOWN:
silly point is that throw down was my top song for this past year and i havent even been into milgram that long so. good song. also i sang it on stage once so. anyway
Flower imagery!!!! god i love flower imagery
the vocals are good
it has a banger es cover too
"ethics are a delusion" is singlehandedly the funniest line to come out of the t1 songs
the mv is SO pretty like. holy shit
the first note constantly jumpscares me
also i like the clock sounds in the background of the verses
the instrumental,,,,
throwdown is just a really nice. calmish song that still has the whole desperation thing conveyed through his voice props to va for that cuz its relatively subtle but really adds to it imo
im reiterating that ethics is a delusion is the funniest thing to me
also i really like the bridge (the whisper part)
irrelevant to the song itself but i like his fit in throw down i'd wear that irl
gardening/pruning as imagery is so fun for a surgeon character
also vocally i just really like throw down its calm sounding yet theres a hint of like. desperation? despair? in his voice and thats really cool to me
---
Jackalope's note: Only one propaganda piece... hmmhehe. Well, I'm glad our resident pretty girl got tons of asks! But I feel a little bad about Shidou, so let's let him argue his case at least! Oi! Shidou! Get over here! Oi! Sheesh, it's like he can't even hear me! This is why I need to send the reminders early...
(mod's propaganda: While I love both songs very much, Throw Down has a special place for me in that I can actually sing it. You sing way too fast, Mappi!! I also just think using flower imagery both made the MV one of the prettiest ones we have yet and helped distance both the viewer and shidou himself to the reality of his sin... I also really like the ethics is a delusion bit lol)
Propaganda for TIHTBILWY:
okay so like the thing im most in love with: the VOCALS!!!! this song has an absolutely AMAZING singer and AMAZING vocals!!!! the way the conversational talk-singing lines still feel so musical!!!! the cute cute cuteeeee mahiru voice!!!! it brings you so much energy!!!! its a song sung with so much love!!!! mahirus va brings such an amazing feel to the song with such amazing talk-singing!!!! its very skillfully done and it happens in i love you too!! mahiru songs r the QUEENS of musical talk singing
the silly phone call bit. kurururu~!
the little vocal flourish and the way her voice raises up like an excited exclamation in the final prechorus!! daijoubu nante kirai DA!
its such a fast song but everything flows so well!!!! it makes it feel so bright and cheery and peppy!!
the instrumental is so underrated just LISTEN to that catchy bass line thats so pretty in the verses!!!! no for real even if u dont vote this is how to be in love with you go listen to the bass line in the verses it works to move both the song and the listener forward at mahirus sweeping breakneck pace. and the cute keyboard sounding and synth instruments!!!! its SUCH a danceable song!!!! i cant listen to it without bopping along in my seat
the way the ominous bits are subtly hidden? it all sounds so cute but there are just these Things that she sings that are really kind of concerning and unhealthy when she sings them!! and the veiled desperation to be in her relationship- listening to that and the cheery tone and breakneck, quick song pace, it really does represent mahiru SO well. she throws in all these little bits that just go noooo teehee the relationships just fine!! when it REALLY isnt
i would listen to mahiru talk for hours
the MV!!!!!! HER FASHION SENSE THE MAGAZINE STYLE!!!! the magazine style especially works so well with her character!!!! its so cute and stunning and just looking at it you have a blast. also her birdcage!!!! her birdcage and the bright orange and the pink bars!!!! the way everything desaturates and becomes more sickly looking when she wakes up at the end!!!! its such a happy carefully curated and designed dream and then it drains away!!!! also god all her outfits are stunning. mahiru call me
the way she sings "overheat de~!" cutest thing in the WORLD.
the little faces she makes!!!! godddd shes so expressive
actually the whole songs so expressive!!!! shes putting her all into it!!!! her words have so much expression in them!!!! once more praising mahirus va the way her voice can soften and become bright or subtly desperate so quickly is MASTERFUL control of expression when singing and its so underrated. join me in being insane over miho okasaki delivers her lines. shes such a perfect mahiru.
funniest es cover. hands down. funniest es cover.
this is how to be in love with you is FREE serotonin!!!! free energy right there!!!! this is how to be in love with you sweep!!!!!
---
-The song is so cheerful!! I always feel like dancing and singing when this one comes up in my playlists!! Absolute banger, mood definer, kicking sadness in the shin with those high-heels and then hitting its face with a cute purse -THE HIGH-HEELS STEPPING TO THE BEAT OF THE MUSIC IN THAT ONE SCENE (0:50). SIMPLY ICONIC. NO ONE DID IT LIKE HER. -👠💅👝👗 -She is slaying. Look at her outfits. She put so much effort there. She gave it her all. Absolutely serving. -SUKITTE KIMOCHI WAKATTA TSUMORI? NARA KONO MAMA FUTARI O-VA-HI-TO- DE -The storyline of the mv MAKES SENSE and you can form a COHESIVE TIMELINE OF EVENTS (unlike other unspecified contestants' mvs you know 🙄) -look at herr 🥺 she beby 🥺 all she did was love too much 🥺 we all love mappi don't we 🥺 she deserved more let her win this pleease 🥺 -No medical malpractice happened in the making of this mv 👍
---
I care so much about This is How To Be In Love With You- it's visuals are brilliant in the ways it conveys its themes and narrative. I'm never normal Ever about the "Love as marketing" symbolism that is brought in by the use of magazines. It's a lovely upbeat song but the Horrors are Always Lurking under it, the breakup Ritual line is my Favorite Line cause its so horrifying but its said so casually and its so good oh its so good-

I talked about my Milgram actors theory earlier, but @amugoffandoms reminded me I also have a little emotional support au version of the idea I’ve been meaning to chat about! It's actually not a typical actors au -- the canon events still happen, but are staged by the in-universe Milgram organization.
(Edit, now with a fic!)
Just like in canon, the organization has a mysterious/supernatural ability to identify and track down ten specific people at their breaking point. In this au, though, it's ten people who could have committed crimes soon. They discreetly reach out to these individuals, requesting for them to be actors in their experiment. They say there will be someone playing a prison guard, and explain the premise. With a bit of coaxing or bribing for a few, they all accept.
Milgram ensures these newfound “prisoners” don’t need to change many details about their lives – the less lies to keep track of, the easier it would be for these ordinary people to pull off such an extensive con.
Some of them are exactly as they were right before their murders, such as Yuno, Fuuta, Muu, and Kotoko. Haruka, his sister, and Amane did go through traumatic abuse, but it was Milgram that pulled them out of the situation before they resorted to murder. Mikoto is/has been aware of his alters for a while at this point.
Some of the others are taken from their lives after things that could have ended fatally turned out alright: Shidou’s family got into an accident but all recovered; Milgram picked up on his private realization that he would have done anything to save them, were the damage worse. Mahiru and Kazui’s partners attempted/considered suicide, but did not succeed. In Mahiru’s case, they reached a friendship despite breaking up. I still don’t know enough about Kazui’s wife, but I like to think they’re pretty separate now.
The ten prisoners weren’t allowed to meet beforehand, but they individually collaborated with the Milgram team to write the lyrics for their t1 songs and film their videos. I'll mention more about the other actors later, but the filming process is a lot of fun. Though the topics confront them with some unsavory thoughts about themselves, it's a good time singing and acting and getting the giggles on set and everything.
Milgram pulls Es from wherever they were for whatever reason, wipes their memory, and drops them into the prison. The prisoners are unaware that Es didn't come willingly, as they all did.
Once the experiment begins, everyone’s interactions that we’ve seen to this point are genuine. The prisoners get to know each other, while they come to terms with the fact that themselves and these others all had murderous potential. Their personalities, behaviors, and stories from their lives are all true. In the interrogations, they speak honestly to Es about their values and choices. The only faked things are the actual references to the murders, and the “invisible force” that they pretend to hit when acting in violence. Mikoto is instructed to use a bit of violence during his interrogation, though Kotoko sneaking in wasn’t scripted – she genuinely had her concerns about his character and acted accordingly.
While Es sleeps after T1, the prisoners are treated the same regardless of verdict. They provide the team with their genuine thoughts about one another to decide what the staged incidents should be. Kotoko doesn’t actually hate the guilty prisoners, but she recognizes she would’ve wanted to take justice into her own hands in a real situation. Amane is very upset but Es' verdict, but the team helps her dramatize her transformation a bit. Haruka and Muu genuinely get that close. Yuno does wish to be left alone.
They film their second trial videos, now allowed to be around the other prisoners as they do so. They also invite people in their life to come in and play their victims. Yes, it’s just as awkward as it sounds. This is where the prisoners do their real reflection – they think about Es’ verdict for them and what they could have been capable of. There’s a bit of relief from both parties knowing that things will turn out alright now that Milgram intervened (ironic, I know, but this is my fix-it hehe). Shidou’s kids are excited to be filmed, not really understanding the context. Haruka once again works with an actor playing his younger self, a bit put off by how similar they look and the memories he bring back. Haruka’s mother, Rei, and Amane’s cult members (if they appear) are some of the only characters played by strangers, though they do look strikingly similar to the real people. Fuuta’s victim is also played by a stranger. Things are still tense with Hinako, but she agrees to appear.
The team helps the prisoners fake injuries with lots bandages and slings. Then they wake Es. The same is repeated for T2/T3.
Now, I’ve played out a few different paths depending on my angst tolerance at the moment – sometimes Es goes through with the third trial verdicts and is forced to watch the executions (not realizing they're cleverly staged). Sometimes they refuse, finding a way to stop the whole experiment. Sometimes the prisoners realize that Es has been an unwilling participant, and bring the experiment to a stop themselves. Sometimes someone jams a wrench in the mv machine and try to blow it up in order for everything to end before final verdicts.
Because of limited details, the ending can play out however one wants. But my go-to is that Es wake up sometime afterwards in a clean facility filled with scientists. They’re brought to an interrogation room – this time on the other side of the questioning. They’re asked about their motivations, actions, emotions, choices, verdicts (or the reason they rebelled at the very end). A few doors down, the prisoners are being asked similar questions of self-reflection and morality.
Es demands to know what’s going on, while the team tries to assure them that the prisoners are all fine. Es doesn’t buy this, though. They know what kind of mind games the experiment has tried to pull, and can’t tell what’s truth or lie anymore. Things get heated as they demand to see the prisoners. Meanwhile, the prisoners are getting worked up asking about Es. If they haven't already, this is when they learn that Es was an actual prisoner there the whole time. The last time they were together the situation was very intense, and they’re all incredibly worried about them.
In the end, they manage to break out of their rooms and reunite in the middle of the facility, and Es is shocked. All ten are alive and well, even those they may have seen die. No eyes or limbs are missing. They’re all laughing and getting along, no matter what kinds of fights they got into between trials. Even more shocking is when the victims join them later – also all alive and happy.
The ending has a bit of unavoidable angst since Es would be pretty fucked up by the whole experiment. They’d struggle with trust issues and knowing what’s reality. However, it’s still an overwhelmingly happy ending. They get to befriend the prisoners and their families outside of the painful context they met in. Regretting their ignorance of the situation, the prisoners decide to make up for lost time and spend a lot of positive, quality time with Es. The kids are finally allowed to play, and the they finally let the adults act a bit protective over them. This is when the found family completely kicks in lol. Es gets to sleep easy knowing they are all alive and happy, they receive all their memories again, and they get to return home to their own family.
I added it to a reblog but editing with @/qrevo's tags because this is what I was looking for but couldn't quite pin down to make it healing for Es too:

What did you make of DR3's explanation for how the characters became Despairs?
I dont like it. Here's a re-write i was thinking about
Ok note: this is what would have made the School Life thing more enjoyable TO ME. Not gonna fit for everyone obvi
Ok first of all. Junko loses most of her potential if you take away her being sneaky and manipulative, which we barely even got to see in the games, so I want that in ACTION.
Second of all, this takes time. More than just like a single moment of anime hypnotism. Junko was definitely working her suckers for at least a year. I dont know how that reflects on the timeline and I dont super care
-
Chisa's class is full of chaos, these are some of the rowdiest students you'll find. They have potential for getting along, but they're also Very Troubled, and Chisa is a kind soul who tries to help them out with various issues. Actual attention paid to these kids being, like, KIDS, but also having some major red flags in their backgrounds that could escalate out of control very fast.
Among others, she tries to get Chiaki to come out of her shell and interact with the others more. This is hard, because Chiaki is not exactly receptive to it at first, but theres a little bit of unity between all the students anyway and they slowly start becoming friends. Chiaki uses this friendship guidance to befriend a lonely boy who often stares longingly at the school, whom she's noticed by silently sticking to the background when he's around. This will come in handy later.
Until, certain students start hanging out with their junior of 1 year, who always seems to be kind of slinking around and hanging with at least one student a day. Chiaki notices this because a) shes very quiet and mostly goes unnoticed when she's in the background, and b) she only needs half her attention span to play games anyway.
The people Junko hangs around get noticeably worse, though not necessarily more divided; just sort of 10 steps backwards for every 1 step Chisa helped them take. The rude and mean ones stop trying to be kinder, the shy and meek ones retreat even more, etc. Chisa is at a complete loss with this, but Chiaki confides in her that it might be the new student making trouble. Chisa takes over, and encourages Chiaki to keep trying to make friends with the others, which Chiaki does.
(Mahiru gets scared into telling no one what happened / what she suspects happened in Natsumi's murder, and gets rid of the evidence, as advised. The evidence she throws away gets mailed to Fuyuhiko, who is encouraged to avenge his sister. Guess who orchestrated all that?)
Chiaki does not fall into Junko's claws, because she's quiet and unobtrusive and, importantly, less desperate for what Junko can give her than the rest is. Chiaki does, after all, have her teacher who took the reigns and told Chiaki to grab her own oxygen mask first, and her Lonely Boy to confide in, and whenever she starts to lose herself, he gently reminds her to stand firm. That's right, the secret weapon was the friends we made along the way, just like in the ending.
(Hajime is probably just doing things more or less like in the anime, maybe listens to Chiaki's growing worries about her semi-friends, shits getting fucked and the only conceivable way Hajime can help is by agreeing to be a lab rat obviously what else. Biggest downfall is wanting to be there for Chiaki, but not letting her be there for him in return. Because inferiority complex.)
Chisa goes to confront this troubled mystery girl; Junko catches her too and starts working her nasty magic- for example, did you know two of your students were a part of a murder? Aren't you supposed to be guiding them? Do you know what's really happening in this school? Do you wanna see the human experimentation they just started? Did you know your best friend is in love with your crush and you can't confide in either of them anymore actually? Etc.
Chiaki is all alone now. When she finally DOES confront Junko, once the whole class along with the teacher has been sort of indoctrinated and her Lonely Boy has ditched her and she's feeling a bit brave because of it all), Junko kills her horribly in front of everyone as they do nothing. Not because they were hypnotized, but because they choose to. This is what really marks the point of no return for them. Chiaki was a quiet and harmless and mostly very nice girl, and her death was pointless, and they were a part of it, and they got away with it.
Instead of being a practically perfect student council president, Chiaki has more of an NPC theme, falling into the background more but also being honest and nice and willing to work with people. Then later, obviously, she really is an NPC and repeats the process, but this time she manages to save her boy and therefore her class.
(I'm not opposed to Chiaki being JUST an AI and never a part of the class at all, but I havent thought about it as much so idk any good points)
Hajime retains the same themes, but gets to be more of a juxtaposition of Junko, sneaking into everyone's hearts by befriending them and helping them move forward instead of backwards. He wins with the power of friendship and all that jazz.
Everyone else gets way more accountability to take. No hypnotism or brain poking, just digging into the worst parts of themselves and then indulging them entirely (with the help of Ultimate Charismatic Cult Leader Junko). I think the most interesting thing about this whole narrative could be that Anyone is capable of intense cruelty, and Anyone can choose to be a better person moving forward.
anyway in my mind that's what happened differently.

Maybe I'm just not in the right circles, but I'm surprised that nobody has headcanonned Yuno as depressed so far. I mean, she's got persistent feelings of loneliness and emptiness in spite of having no apparent issues, which she tries to fix with risky sex. She claims that she "has something missing" and that she doesn't care about anybody, including herself. She says that she doesn't want to live past forty*. She often complains that things are too much of a bother, or acts happier than she really feels to please other people. When she "cools off", she socially withdrawns from everyone except those who she thinks need her (Mahiru and Amane, in this case).
I guess people don't think of it because she's not very self-loathing, but her words and attitude during the second trial sound like anhedonia to me, and it's not just stuff from after she withdrew emotionally. For example, looking at her interros: "What's your dream? Finding something I can get absorbed in" "If you could have a wish, what would it be? Nothing, I might regret it/ Nothing, as long as my friends and family are happy I'm fine (T2)". Plus her being asked about important memories twice and replying both times that there are none that stick out, and giving a similar answer to people she likes ("I like everyone except those I hate", so basically nobody stands out positively)
Overall, it just feels like she's got some serious apathy that goes beyond being, as she says, "a bit too realistic". Like I think at the point where you consider going into what's essentially customer service** for emotional relief as "necessary" and think being kidnapped and imprisoned is an improvement over your usual life, you've definitely got issues and the only question is what kind.
*I wonder if this is a trope in Japan? I'm reminded of a song with a similar name.
**I originally wrote that as a joke, but I really think it's worth exploring why she felt that the way to "warmth" (which seems to be something like understanding) was a profession where pretending to be the perfect girlfriend is part of the job description. Does the emotional distance feel more comfortable to her than being genuine? Or is she trying to prove something, that she's so desirable that men will risk social death and spend tons of money just to spend a few hours with her? I feel like her saying that what she likes in a man is having them treat her like she's special is an important piece of the puzzle, but there's not enough context for the full picture...

Mahiru’s sign to stop flirting with every single person who enters her line of sight ☆
Tumblr media
Mikoto/john x Reader (they’re jealous)
A/N - This is for a friend, so reader is down bad !! as they should be!! mikoto is hot!! this one is suggestive ig, its got making out (s c a n d e l o u s) but nothing explicit. somebody give Es a pay raise.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Despite her romantic tendencies, you enjoyed passing free time with Mahiru. She never made you feel uncomfortable, and ever since her injuries from her judgement, you’d been walking with her from time to time. Mahiru liked taking walks, but ever since the judgement came, she hated doing so alone- After Kotoko’s attacks, nobody was the same. Everyone was on edge. Even Es.
Today was no exception to your newfound tradition of accompanying her throughout the prison hallways- you were happy to do so with her, and she seemed much more cheerful when she had someone to go with. In your mind, it wasn’t odd at all if she linked arms with you- she was injured, so it was all perfectly normal for her to need a bit of help walking. And you were never bothered by her absentminded flirting- it was in her nature as a hopeless romantic.
You knew she harbored no feelings for you, since she spent half her time rambling to you about her wonderful boyfriend. That part did concern you, but you decided it’d be best to leave that up to Es to mention. You were fine with it if she hugged you before going back to her cell, or even if she gave you a goodnight kiss on the cheek- it was all completely platonic. Mahiru was grateful for your friendship and your understanding of that fact, but the one thing you failed to realize was how it might look to others.
And lord knows your incapability to notice how a certain person was taking it would get you in all sorts of shit.
“Goodnight, Mappi!” You said, not hesitating to return the gesture when she stood on her toes to hug you. She smiled as she gave you her typical goodnight wishes, reminding you to drink water as she gave her a kiss on the cheek and then hurried back off to her cell. It really didn’t mean anything to you, as you turned on your heel and started absentmindedly strolling back to your own cell- Until, of course, you heard the familiar sound of your cell door creaking open.
You snapped your head up as you heard shuffling fabric, but the dim lighting in your cell didn’t do much to help your god-awful eyesight in figuring out who the fuck was in your cell this late at night. You were already sitting on the low-quality mattress of your cell, just staring dumbfounded in the general direction of the door as you felt a bit of fear settle into your body.
“H…ello……?”
Your voice was quiet as you spoke, slightly afraid- it was past curfew by now, and if Es found someone in your room, they’d get some sort of penalty. Which sucked, because you were actually really chill with every other prisoner and would much prefer to not have any issues.
Your thoughts were interrupted when you heard a voice that was undoubtedly Mikoto’s, as he inched closer and sat down on your bed. “Sweetheart.” His voice was colder than usual, like we was upset, although you were unsure as to why. “C’mere.”
Although you hesitated for a moment, you inched closer to the end of your bed, close enough to him where you could see his face a bit better. He had an almost confused expression on his face, like he couldn’t quite sort his emotions. He glanced at you, eyes softening once they fell on your face.
“What’s the deal with you and Mappi-chan-….?” He asked slowly, staring at you without ever letting his gaze falter. He sounded confused, and maybe a bit upset, but was careful as not to seem accusing.
“Mappi-..? She’s my friend, just like all the other prisoners here..? You know that….?” You ran through what had happened that day in your head, trying to figure out what he was talking about- absentmindedly lifting a hand to your cheek to where Mahiru had given you an innocent little kiss, which was really a terrible decision. The moment you did so, that was all it took for Mikoto to… change.
He narrowed his eyes at you, which made you feel things you probably shouldn’t have in that moment, but you shoved those thoughts away as fast as you could.
“That’s not what it seemed like.” His voice was noticeably deeper, and sounded gravelly as he spoke, his tone of voice changing dramatically. He reached forward, grabbing your hand to bring it away from where your fingers where still gently tracing the spot Mahiru had kissed you.
Suddenly, everything caught up to you.
You felt your face flush a deep shade of violent red as he stared down at you, some emotion in his eyes you couldn’t quite get a good grip on when he was staring at you so intently like that. He didn’t say anything, just watched you as your breath and heart rate started picking up.
“You… know you’re mine, right..?” He asked, voice low as he spoke. You nodded shakily, not really being able to say anything.
Talking to Mikoto was one thing. But talking to… him? You knew he was different right now, and whenever he was like this, the tension got almost suffocatingly high.
“Then I should be the only one to kiss you.” He huffed, almost sounding pouty.
You breathed out a barely audible “That makes sense.” as your eyes started to wander, now barely able to control the rapid speed at which your heart was beating.
He stared at you as the room fell back into silence for a moment, just… watching you. Watching the way you got fidgety under his gaze, watched the way you took quick breaths, watched the way your eyes darted from place to place through the room, meeting his every now and then before darting away again in your rush of jumbled emotions.
Well, there was no turning back now, right?
After making his decision, he wasted no time in placing his hand firmly on the back of your neck, which sent your eyes straight back to him as he leaned in. His lips were soft, although they pressed against yours with unimagined fervor as he pulled you closer.
You felt your arms wrap around his neck as you gave in to the way he kissed you, almost greedily, one arm settling around your waist to support you. His eyes fluttered shut as he continued needily pressing himself against you, letting out some sort of muffled sound through the kiss. The moment your lips parted, you feel his tongue darting out, and your mind went entirely blank. All you could do in the moment was tighten your grip around him, him doing the same while he pushed you up against the wall. You could barely breathe with him against you like this, but you were still trying to pull him closer as your blush intensified so much it was a wonder it didn’t burn you.
He pulled away for just a moment, only long enough to breathe out the word ‘mine’ before leaning back in. His hand on your neck slowly moved up to your hair, ruffling through it in a way that was almost calming.
You weren’t quite sure how far this would go with the way he was holding onto you, but all your racing thoughts were cut short as you felt a flashlight, bright against your face.
“Hey, it’s past curfe—-“
A long silence, omitting the slight panting that came from the man who was now just hovering over you.
“God fucking damnit.” Annoyance was evident in Es’s voice as he simply glared at you. “You would think that in prison people would be able to control themselves, but noooo. Fucking hate this job.”

Speaking about chapter 133…
Since it has been a long time since I made long posts and these kind of chapters that focus on other characters, much less girls, much less Mitsuba, are rare, I felt like talking about it🤧
First of all: Screw this title and the boob joke.
Tumblr media
Now, somehow I liked this chapter? It is the first time ever since chapter 17 that we see Shinoa and Mitsuba talking to each other about themselves. Although in small quantities, many of the things I wanted to see happened: Mitsuba addressing Shinoa’s change in behaviour, them talking about their sisters, how similar they are but also have their differences, their reasons to live, their relationship, the squad leader role and how Shinoa does not talk much about herself.
We didn’t learn anything new except for Mitsuba not necessarily seeking her family’s validation and Shinoa being able to control demons.
Tumblr media
About the former, I am actually happy that Mitsuba is not necessarily seeking Aoi’s validation because someone like Aoi does not deserve that effort. But I am bit sad that after the things Aoi said to her in chapter 70, we didn’t get more than this. It does not have to be now but I hope eventually we get some flashbacks about the Sangū sisters’ past to explain why Aoi treats her like this.
What worries me more is that we already know Mitsuba’s reason to live so does that mean I will never get to see her demon? I mean, it’s those scenes where characters talk with their demons in that white world in their minds where we get to know more about them but Mitsuba already opened up a lot in the real world. At this point of the manga I am not expecting anything about Mitsuba’s character in the long run; it’s just that I want to see how her demon looks like (Also, 2024 is the year of the dragon so why not?🐉)
Tumblr media
I’ve seen that the fandom is divided between those who took it literally and think the girls are seriously competing for Yuu’s love and those who think they were just joking to lighten up the mood. I am with the latter. The vibes their conversation gave me were lighthearted. Mitsuba has a crush on Yuu but she never made a move on him and it doesn’t seem like she ever planned to because her feelings are probably not that strong. Knowing how Kagami writes women he could have made this chapter much worse but “No comment” is all that we got. In all honesty, she seems more worried about Shinoa being depressed than Yuu leaving them. She even says it: “Will that be the first real reason to live you’ve ever found?”, and also blushes before deciding to participate in the ‘competition’ as if she is embarassed because all of this feels just too stupid but she still does it because it lightens Shinoa’s mood. Shinoa also does not take her seriously either. I am not saying my take is correct since the only one who truly knows what is going on is Kagami but I still strongly believe this.
Tumblr media
Just like Yuu and Mika, the Shinoa squad finally decided to separate from Guren and become their own team (but I wonder where is Guren?). Shinoa being able to control demons gives them a strong card just like how the vampires’ team is really strong, Guren and Mahiru rely on experiments, and Yuu has Mika as his demon and the knowledge that they are swapped. Now that she is all motivated, could her powers be able to control Mika? I want to see Kimizuki, Yoichi and Mitsuba in action too (I am tired of katana fights). I am happy to see the squad after one year and I hope the next chapter follows with them again or the vampires that are not with Mika and Yuu.
Tumblr media
This is like a competition on who makes Shikama more miserable💀 I understand where Shinoa is coming from since she can finally make Shikama pay back a bit for how much he ruined her life but at the same she looks so insane that she reminds me so much of Yuu and about how tired I am that Kagami is drawing so many parallels between characters that the individualities they had are being lost😞
The big question here is what this chapter means in the long run? Was it just to give have some funny scenes or is the chapter setting up something for Shinoa? Shinoa is aware Yuu rejected her and yet still tries. Her brain tells her it’s impossible but her heart says otherwise:
Tumblr media
The way her feelings are delivered and the way Yamamoto draws her makes me interpret it as Kagami’s way of conveying how a sexist education can affect a girl’s mind (if I choose to believe in his writing decisions, that is). Again, Shinoa knows she is rejected yet still tries. This contradiction can be seen again when Shinoa tells Mitsuba that she loves her a lot but since she does not value her own life at all so she does not need Mitsuba or anyone’s validation because it would not change a thing…but still she craves Yuu’s validation. It’s irrational and powerful, showing how much the brainwashing got into her.
Will it take more for Shinoa to stop needing Yuu’s validation? What will it take? Yuu rejecting her more directly? Yuu trying to kill her after she tries to kill Mika? Will it be someone else’s intervention? Is this tied to how Mitsuba needs someone’s validation but it does not have to be her blood related family? Is the manga leading to a point where Mitsuba might help Shinoa break out of her brainwashing and in turn Mitsuba will find validation though Shinoa and altogether the girls stop crushing over Yuu?
I hope so because the way the chapter is written has that feeling in the air that Mitsuba actually likes Shinoa romantically. Yuu does not love Shinoa or her back yet Kagami instead writes about Mitsuba focusing on Shinoa and not Mitsuba being sad that Yuu does not like her back. The way she tries to cheer Shinoa up and how she kept talking with Shinoa about embarassing things despite knowing Kimizuki and Yoichi might overhear them because she was happy that Shinoa was finally opening up to her…hmm
Tumblr media
Also, the “I love you lots and lots”??
Tumblr media
These past two years Kagami has been especially explicit with Mika and Yuu’s feelings for each other, more than in the rest of the manga, so maybe he will get more bold as a writer when it comes to the girls’ relationship? Who knows…
Could this actually be a joke-turned-into foreshadowing?
Tumblr media
I felt like this chapter was a bit better than previous ones and I am happy that their friendship got a bit more focus. However, I don’t expect that writing about them after almost 10 years of barely any focus will dramatically improve the development and depth of their friendship. A flashback about their past together before the squad was made could help on setting the bases for why they are close but there is still that big gap between chapters 17 and 133.

So, that last minigram huh?
Kotoko continuing to be unable to take what she dishes out is adorable without question. To celebrate the continuation and the use of portal timeline interactions in another minigram-
I wanna take a moment to discuss that and how martial arts is handled in the portal timeline too!
Transcript of official translation of Minigram EP51 "Mixed Martial Arts Competition Part 2"
[51-1] Kotoko: You're a martial arts guy right, Kazui? Kotoko: What do you do? Judo? Mahiru: What's wrong Mikoto? Kazui: Why do you wanna know all of a suddent? nervous Mikoto: If the battle starts here, I'll have nightmares about it. Mikoto: Who is stronger...? Last episode [51-2] Kazui: Uhh. Kazui: I mainly do judo and kendo(Japanese fencing). Kazui: And a bit of karate. Kazui: You also have some experience in combat sports right? Kazui: I can tell. Kazui: Hm... Kazui: It involves punching and kicking... Kazui: But I don't think it's karate... Kotoko: ...! Kazui: Is it taekwondo? Kotoko: I'm not telling you. Kotoko: Stop staring at me you pervert. Kazui: Is.. Kazui: Isn't that a bit unfair...?
Tumblr media
Source
Does Kotoko in the last panel remind anyone else of another prisoner?
Tumblr media
I guess playing investigator/hero is only fun when when she the only one doing the watching right?
They’re still here, still here, it grates me.
The difference between this in and the portal timeline interaction is that more prisoners have been included. Mahiru and Mikoto. Two people who had already deduced that Kazui and Kotoko had some martial arts knowledge.
Since this is following up from Minigram EP50 "Mixed Martial Arts Competition Part 1" where Mikoto asks who would win between Kazui and Kotoko in a fight.
[50-1] Mikoto: By the way- Mikoto: Who is stronger between Koto-chan and Kazu? Mikoto: Both of them do martial arts, right? Kotoko: If we go head to head, I'd think Kazui. Futa: Of course it would be. Futa: Don't ask such a stupid question. Futa: Women can't beat men in martial arts. Futa: This isn't a manga. Futa: Body size makes a big difference. step step Futa: How hard you hit is dependent on your body weight Futa: You don't understand. [50-2] Kotoko: Futa does have a point. squeak Kotoko: The fact that many martial arts have weight divisions means that it makes much of a difference. Kotoko: I would be bantamweight and he would be cruiserweight or heavyweight. Kotoko: But... snap Kotoko: I would at least break one of his arms. sst Kotoko: ... So when do we fight?
Maybe we'll get to see Mahiru and Kazui's timeline conversation from 20/06/19 turned into a minigram as well.
20/06/19 Kazui: By the way…… thanks, Shina-chan. You keep going around and talking to people to make sure the mood never gets too sour, right? It’s a big help. We’re all in here together, after all. If a fight broke out, the whole group could fall apart. Mahiru: ……eh? Huh~? Ah, no, I’m just talking to people because I personally want to talk. All the kids are so cute, so I can’t help but want to fuss over them! A fight, huh… But if that ever happened, then you’ll definitely be a big help, right~? Since you’re so big! And buff! Kazui: Ahh, no. I mean, I’ll do what I can. Based on appearance, as long as nobody has a weapon, I think I can probably get everyone under control…… No, we should just hope that nothing like that ever happens. Mahiru: You know, I quite like watching martial arts, actually. I don’t really get it, but it looks super cool. Hi-yah! Hi-yah!
The changes made in the minigram could be to give a more cohesive narrative to those moments. Mikoto, asks Kotoko who's tougher which causes her to get intrigued as well wanting to test her strength, she asks Kazui what martial arts he knows to see if he's a worthy opponent. This leads to Kazui getting nervous assuming this means she's going to try to fight him. Which could lead into him thanking Mahiru for always trying to keep the atmosphere light afterwards and she just explains she has fun talking to everyone.
But let's hop into the interesting thing. Considering the focus on strength and martial arts I decided to look over the timeline interactions involving them. they're interesting to say the least.
Here's the first one to mention martial arts-
20/05/30 Mahiru: Hey, Kotoko-chan. There’s something that’s really been bugging me, so do you mind if I ask? ……how do you style yourself so well? Have you always dressed like that? But it also looks like something you’d wear for training. Do you play sport? Ah, or maybe some kind of martial arts? Kotoko: ……you really are carefree. Everyone in here is a “murderer” right? Is this really the time to be asking questions like that? Mahiru: Hmm, I guess so. That’s what they said. But nobody here seems particularly scary or anything, right? If I had to pick someone, then maybe you’re the scariest! Ah, wait, do you do like yoga or something? Kotoko: ……I can’t tell if you’re making fun of me or are just an airhead.
The second is you guessed it the interaction between Mahiru and Kazui. Wow Mahiru certainly is good at picking out people who know martial arts in a casual way.
The third one is Kotoko's interaction with Kazui,
20/07/09 Kotoko: Kazui, you do martial arts, right? ……what type? Judo? Kazui: Ah, my main is…… judo, and kendo. I also know a little bit of karate. You must have some martial arts experience too, right, Yuzuriha-chan? I can tell by looking. Hmm… probably a combat type…… I’m guessing not karate…… is it taekwondo? Kotoko: ……I’m not telling you. Stop ogling me like that. It’s gross. Kazui: I-isn’t that a bit unfair?
Then the conversation between Mikoto, Kotoko, and Futa.
20/08/03 Mikoto: By the way, Koto-chan. Who’s stronger between you and Kazu-san? You both know martial arts, right? Kotoko: ……if it was a fair one-on-one fight, probably Kazui. Futa: Isn’t that obvious? What a stupid question. There’s no way a girl could win in a fight against a man. This is real life, not a manga. There’s too big a difference in body size. And that’s what determines the weight of your attacks. Kotoko: ……Futa’s not entirely wrong there. In a lot of martial arts, they specifically split up divisions based on body weight for that reason. I’m bantam, and he’d probably be either cruiser or heavy. Well, I’d still break an arm or two though.
The funniest thing about looking over the Portal Timeline interactions in contrast to how the minigram portrays this is-
Well to realize that Kazui never told anyone he did martial arts until he was directly asked by Kotoko. Kotoko and Mahiru both just assumed from how he was built that he did some sort of martial arts. A conclusion they would have come to by oggling the man.
Now Mahiru doesn't hide that she's eyeing up the every adult men in Milgram at all-
20/06/08 Mahiru: Shidou-san…… you’re really good-looking. Personally I think you’d be better if you ate a bit more, but you’re slim and tall, and well put together to boot…… You must’ve been super popular up until now, right? Shidou: ……yeah, that’s true…… I did my share of fooling around in the past. Mahiru: Oh~? That’s not the sort of answer I’d expect from you. I’ve got it! Somebody told you that if you replied like that people wouldn’t resent you so much, right? Shidou: Haha, I’m surprised you guessed. ……it seems that no matter what guise I put on, it’s meaningless against a woman’s insight.
So, it's not much of a surprise that she would make this sort of observation about Kazui. Hell, I'm not even faulting it.
Q.05  Who do you dislike most out of the other prisoners? Mahiru: Futa-kun is a bully, so definitely out! Also Mikoto is pretty flippant, he kinda seems like the type who’d cheat~
If she's trying to use Milgram to find a new boyfriend all the more power to her. Yet, it is again very hilarious that from how the timeline presents it the only reason Kotoko came to the conclusion that Kazui did a martial arts was because she was in her own words ogling him.
Kotoko: ……I’m not telling you. Stop ogling me like that. It’s gross.
What about you, Kotoko?!
Tumblr media
Putting this look to the side. Which out of context and in context is not good cosidering the deifnition of the term ogle.
Kazui never told anyone that he did a martial art until he was expressedly asked by Kotoko. The only way that anyone would draw the conclusion that he did is by looking at him (possibly alot). Plus we already know that Kotoko has been keeping an eye on all the prisoner and even more stuff since the release of Deep Cover.
Sorry to go into semantics but yeah what Kotoko did in this minigram is the definition of ogling and is presented as such visually as well as contexually. So, makes sense why they'd have her call him a pervert instead of having her say to stop ogling her like she did before. Having her say that would highlight the double standard here a bit too much.
Despite Kotoko not even answering Kazui when he asks why she's inquiring about this in the overtly menacing way that she is. He still answers her question earnestly. Then when he asks her what martial arts she does to continue the conversation and give her the opportunity to have a reciprocal conversation she just shuts it down by calling him a pervert in the minigram and implying he's one in the original portal timeline by saying he's ogling her.
Him saying that's a bit unfair is rather reasonable. Because that's what it is unfair. He told her what martial arts he does the least she could do is continue the conversation she started and answer the same question she had the audacity to ask.
But while we're still on the topic of martial arts-
Why the fuck are Mahiru and Mikoto so good at telling who does martial arts? It makes sense for Kazui and Kotoko. Also Mahiru admits to being interested in martial arts to Kazui. So, that somewhat explains that. Yet, with Mikoto it's a bit surprising. Given he says that he hates violence.
Q.06 What do you hate? Mikoto: working overnight / reptiles / violence
Well just because he hates violence doesn't mean he can't recognize those capable of being violent or even that he won't use violence himself. It just means he hates it.
Still why is that a skill Mahiru or Mikoto would ever need to the point of being comfortable enough to surmise that two of the prisoners here do it? While also being stunningly correct. Mikoto could have overheard any of the other timeline interractions and just been making small talk though.
Since his talk happens after all the others. Still the fact that four people in this prison are possibly really good at surmising if someone does martial arts by looking at them alone is kind of impressive and terrifying.
This is just some interesting stuff that the new minigram got me thinking about. It's really interesting to see how the staff is incorporating the portal timeline interactions into the minigrams. I can't wait to see what they do with the others from trial one.

Mod monomi~ how about a headcanon with Mahiru where she has a boyfriend that likes it when she gets stern. Like he'll get giggly and blushy when she gets stern with them
Mahiru Koizumi x Giggly!Male!Reader
Mahiru reminds me of this girl I knew in middle school who would tell me I wasn’t playing the saxophone right (I wasn’t) When she had literally never picked up a saxophone or any other brass instrument lmfaoooo. I was so annoyed at this girl but we were in art club together so we kinda became frienemies and I lent her my sword art online manga and she returned it six months later with the spine halfway ripped. But I mean I can’t get too mad at her because she unknowingly rescued me from the SAO fandom.

♡ Mahiru has high expectations for her boyfriend… Or at least she thinks she does.
♡ She’s the type who always crows at you to keep your dorm clean, get your work done, and take good care of yourself.
♡ Regardless of this, she doesn’t mind dropping everything to help you do them (Or do them for you), giving you a “Jeez, you’re so hopeless.” or a “What would you boys do without us girls?” Even if you were fully willing and capable to do it on your own.
♡ Mahiru would never admit it but she loved taking care of you. Usually, she treats you nicer than most, scolding you in a more teasing way, but she could still crack down on you like you like an annoyed mother.
♡ She noticed that you seemed to find it funny when she spoke like this. At first, she found it a bit annoying. After a while though she was genuinely upset about it.
♡ Were you not taking her feelings seriously? Did you not appreciate all she did for you? Did you even care about her? These were all things Mahiru wondered about during this period. She just didn’t know how to communicate that to you.
♡ Until one day she just kind of… Blew up…
♡ “Hey Y/N! How did you do on your test today?”
♡ “Oh um… Honestly not too well… I have to make it up…”
♡ “Ugh, what am I gonna do with you?”
♡ “Heheheh! Sorry, Mahiru!” You chuckled, your bad mood disappearing suddenly. Mahiru scoffed.
♡ “God, you men… You’ll just laugh at anything won’t you!?” You laughed and blushed, pulling her closer to your side. Mahiru grunted again and pushed you away. She shouted at you “Do you even appreciate anything I do at all?! I try so hard for you and you think it’s funny?!” She looked angrier than you had ever seen, unlike all of the other times she ever scolded you.
♡ After that, you finally had the dreaded conversation. You explained that it wasn’t that you didn’t appreciate everything she did, you just thought she was so cute when she got all strict with you. At first, she was stunned and even happy on the inside. And then her reaction was, well, certainly in character.
♡ “You mean… You like it when I talk to you like that…?” Mahiru didn’t know what to say… Just what to think. “Is that like… Some perverted boy thing?” She asked, scrunching her nose.
♡ After this is explained to her, she doesn’t mind you doing it anymore, since deep down, she’d do anything to see your smile! <3
♡ Love you darlings!!

Graphology - studying Amane's handwriting
I said in a previous post that I used to like graphology, so I decide to analyse for a bit one of Milgram's characters handwriting. Amane was chosen after I spinned the wheel, because I couldn't decide who to do!
Before proceeding, I want to remind that it was done for fun, and, because I only have her signature, I couldn't put all the information found on different sites!
Tumblr media
1. "Pointed letters are a sign of an intelligent person who might be holding back aggression. Rounded letters signal creativity and artistic ability."
For this, I had to look at other Milgram characters handwriting in order to decide if her writing can be considered more on the rounded spectrum or pointed spectrum.
Tumblr media
When compared with Kotoko's handwriting, which appears to be more agressive or with Fuuta, whose writing seems to lack any roundness, I couldn't consider Amane's handwriting as pointed. With the exception of letter A, the rest are quite rounded and the letter u, for example, looks similar with Yuno's (who without a doubt has rounded letters)
Amane, although she often tries to study and says that she likes it, is confirmed that she doesn't necesseraly has a special inclination towards it, or, at least, towards the more logistic subjects, such as math.
"Amane: ……what’s wrong, Shidou-san? Your hand has stopped marking. This is mathematics, so there’s no questions about the answers. If I got something wrong, please mark it with an X."
(skipping some dialogue!)
Amane: …please give me back my test. It seems you don’t have the concentration levels required to be my teacher. I’m going to get Kotoko-san to teach me instead."
And Amane asks her in a future interrogation question, in which Kotoko says this:
"Kotoko: There, I’ve finished marking. 83%. How do I put it… Even though you act like this, it’s not like you’re super brilliant at studying or anything, huh."
However, Amane prides herself with her japanese skills, literature being considered as a form of art, because you need lots of creativity in order to write a proper composition.
"What are your special skills?"
Tumblr media
If we also consider Amane's first MV, called Magic, in which there are a lot of cartoonish elements, it proves further that Amane has an artistic ability!
2. "The size of a writer's letters shows how they fit in with their environment. Relatively large letters might indicate that someone demands attention, while smaller letters are typically written by someone who is modest and unassuming."
Amane is very modest, learning since an early age to appreciate the smallest things, hiding her temptation for cute objects or desserts, being happy with what she has.
From Purge March, we descovered that Amane's financial situation doesn't seem to be very favourable.
Tumblr media
Old furniture, messy rooms. The walls from the front are cracked, indicating that it is a very old building.
Tumblr media
And still, when asked if she wishes to do something, her response is negative, saying that she doesn't lack anything.
"If you could do anything and be forgiven for it, what would you do?"
Tumblr media
Even when it comes to birthdays, she doesn't necesseraly want an object as a gift, being happy with just a "Happy birthday" addresed to her.
"Kazui: Even so, though, it’s not like I have a present to give you or anything. Sorry…if push comes to shove, maybe I can ask the guard for a cake. Depending on their mood, they might agree to it.
Amane: No, that’s fine. I’m not especially fond of that sort of thing. I’ll just accept your kind words as a gift."
Also, she doesn't seem to crave for attention in general, with her current state, distancing herself from most people, Yuno's interruption and approach, making Amane to feel a bit annoyed, uncomfortable.
"Amane: What is it…… Kashiki Yuno. Don’t sit so close to me. Go away.
Yuno: Sorry for barging in when you’re getting into your worldview thing. But Mahiru-san’s finally managed to get to sleep. Humour me with some small talk while I take a break."
"Small handwriting can also indicate someone with strong focus and concentration who tends to work on one thing at a time rather than multi-tasking."
In this small interaction between those two, it seems like, Yuno has distracted Amane from an activity, probably praying, and ultimely had to stop in order to listen to what Yuno has to say, meaning that she is not much of a multi-tasking person.
3."The space between letters shows the writer's need for personal space. Someone who writes with plenty of space between each letter typically doesn't like to be crowded and needs a lot of personal space. If their letters are closer together or even overlapping, it indicates they prefer to be around people and get lonely easy."
Amane writes with a lot of space between letters. As I stated before, she doesn't seem to mind loneliness, finding it quite comforting.
I could again put the interaction between Amane and Yuno, but I find it repetitive! So, I'll give other examples!
Tumblr media
Amane enjoying a late night drink with the only company being Jackalope, pointing at her soft spot for animals.
Tumblr media
Amane liking to study or read alone, being happy in a peaceful atmosphere.
4. "If your e's are usually narrow, you’re probably skeptical and uninfluenced by emotions. If you find that your e’s are usually large, you might be more open-minded and willing to try new things."
If we consider that Amane's handwriting is quite small, for her, the e's loop is surprisingly quite large.
Tumblr media
We have to understand that Amane's unwillingness to try new things, such as desserts, amusement parks, or music, is because of her education and the way she was tought by her parents.
In reality, Amane is secretly wishing to eat desserts, to try cute outfits, to play with pretty things. However, she had to learn to refrain herself from doing so, because of the rules, in order to not receive anymore punishments and to be praised for being a good child.
"Shidou: Amane, I heard it was your birthday today. I asked Es-kun if we could get this cake to give to you……
Amane: I don’t need it. I’ll gratefully accept your well-wishes, but I don’t eat things like that. Also…… Shidou-san, I can’t say I’m especially fond of the way you assume that all children will love frivolous things like this.
Shidou: …Is that so… I apologise. I’m sure everyone else will be happy to eat it, so don’t worry about it. Sorry for intruding.
Amane: ……
……cake……"
Yes, she doesn't want to change her ways, her mindset, but that's because she can't just completely erase her education, what she believes in. In reality, in a place like Milgram, those rules and religion is the only thing left that seems familiar.
Moreover, this answer always stood out to me...
"If the world were to end tomorrow, what would you do?"
Tumblr media
Amane is open to try new things, if something or someone wouldn't hold her back. If the world would end tomorrow, there is no reason is being afraid of a punishment, the consequences don't matter anymore. It's pointless to think about what would happen, when there is no future. So Amane believes that she can as well live the moment, experince as many new things as possible!
Thank you for reading! ~🖋️

hello tea you should assign milgram character teas (as in: chamomile tea or whatever) because it will be very funny
haruka: sleepytime tea (he's stated to sleep when he's bored, it's also a nice mild flavor that i think fits him)
yuno: hibiscus tea (the color is reddish and i associate her with red/pink, it's described as "pleasant and tangy" which reminds me of how shes kind but teasing)
fuuta: ginger tea (it has a spicy flavor, which i think fits his personality, as well as his tastes if we go by his salamander cover)
muu: licorice tea (supposed to be very sweet, and i think she has a major sweet tooth / won't drink things that aren't super sweet)
shidou: peppermint tea (maybe it's because of toothpaste but i associate mint flavors with doctors, it's free of caffeine which i think he'd avoid so his hands wouldn't get shaky, and overall just suits him)
mahiru: homemade herbal tea (i feel like she's the type to make her own tea, also the type to believe in herbs' ability to affect her love life, so she'd use things like basil, fennel seeds, cinnamon, and cloves)
kazui: hard iced tea (its alcohol, also commonly mixed with fruits and he's certainly a bit... yk...)
amane: sage herbal tea (i feel like she'd only have exposure to very simple teas, maybe even having to make them herself, so i chose this easy to make tea, plus the word sage comes with religious connotations)
mikoto: chamomile tea (he's usually quite chill, relating to the relaxing effects of this tea, i also think it's something he'd use to relax after work)
kotoko: black tea (it has a stronger flavor and high caffeine levels which i just feel like suits her)

this wld only make sense if u understand what the nmnl nmnl fic on ao3 is about uhm also yttd spoilers under cut (this may have awful mischaracterisation)
hear me out these 2 as es and enyu but i only have a good reason for es/kanna
Tumblr media
so if u squint really hard enough mahiru is like an older sister figure to es, and in the fic mahiru is dead because es couldn’t do anything(??). Kugie (kanna’s older sister) also was killed because Kanna didn’t know how to save her. omg?!?? (kanna gets blamed for her sisters death too, js like es!!!!!!!! Lmaoo!!!!!!)
Kanna was also took advantage of by sou for his own benefit(???? it’s more so that sara wouldn’t take advantage of kanna instead) but in the end sou still genuinely cared for kanna’s feelings, and changed that one phone message to something nicer so that kanna wouldn’t start crying and grieving. uhm i dont rlly get fhis part either ignore this
its more like how enyu discarded es’ true feelings and pushed the prisoners away in the earlier chapters. but ykyk enyu cares enough that yk. the self hugs, the imitating shidou bit(??), forcing es to eat and take care of themselves. uhhhhh yeah defo ignore this part
this is stupid but es is known as the emotional one (according to enyu in one of the chapters☠️☠️), kanna route in yttd is called “emotion route”. same with enyu/sou and “logic”
during chapter 2 Main Game, Kanna tries sacrificing herself because she thinks that she “gets in everyone’s way, would be better off dead” and bc she wants to meet her sister again. Sou begs Kanna to stop this and tries sacrificing himself idfk. i just thought this reminded me of chapter 8 when Es tried stabbing themselves and Enyu kept trying to take control and make Es stop. uhm.
personally i don’t think i have anything to say ab enyu/sou. this what i mean by i had more reasons for es/kanna.
also i saw someone said es could be sara bc protags. that’s nice.

I remember seeing a fanart on Twitter of Mahiru and Shidou jumping Kazui after they found out his crime. Can you do a fic of them beating his ass after finding out his crime
Tumblr media
RIP Kazui sdfasdf -- thank you for the request pal!! (I assume you mean the cheating theory and not homophobic 06 09 LMAO) Mikoto is always down to stir things up, though it took a while to picture what Mahiru would be driven to. In the name of love I think she'd become a force to be reckoned with 👏👏👏 I hope you enjoy >:3
Some occupants of Milgram are excellent at lying. They hide a great many things, and pull a great many poker faces. Other occupants are the very worst at it. They wear their heart on their sleeve, for better or worse. Kazui was one of the excellent ones. Mahiru was not.
When Muu asked if he understood any of the celebrity news they were discussing at dinner, he convinced her that he knew everyone they’d mentioned with a grin. When Mahiru told Fuuta his hair looked “perfectly stylish” after he tried cutting it himself, she got a much rougher reception as he saw right through her.
When Es declared Kazui forgiven “despite his infidelity,” he had maintained the perfect expression to hide the fact that they were a bit off. When Mahiru waved her fingers and told Kazui nothing was wrong, he could plainly see there was bitterness underneath her words.
He couldn't fathom what he'd done to upset her – they'd had pleasant conversations during meals, and played games in the common area. The pair never spoke about it, though; there was no need to make her any more angry. Kazui had nearly forgotten about it by the time Es disappeared.
Mikoto proved a slightly better liar, but Kazui caught some odd expressions from him as well. They were smoking in silence together when there was a knock at the door. He answered with his cigarette still resting between his teeth. He was surprised to find Mahiru glaring up at him.
She drew herself up, appearing taller and more intimidating than usual. There was a fire in her eyes he hadn’t experienced before. “In the name of true love –!” she cried. She squeezed her eyes shut and wound her arm back. Kazui looked at her quizzically. It wasn’t as if she was going to slap anyone.
She slapped him. Hard.
The force knocked the cigarette from his lips and sent him coughing on the smoke. Suddenly Mikoto was behind him, holding his arms in place.
“Woo! He’s all yours, Mappi!”
Seeing the sudden turn of events, Shidou leapt in to help. He tried to wrench Kazui away by his right arm, but Mikoto held fast to his left. He didn't particularly enjoy being the subject of their tug-of-rope. His legs stumbled between them, falling a bit to one knee. He was left sputtering for breath, pinned between them and facing a fierce Mahiru. He didn't know when she and Mikoto planned all this, and his mind was spinning too fast to think too hard on it.
Kazui looked frantically to her, but her rage was rapidly dulling. She slowly returned to looking exactly 154 cm short. Her mouth twisted into a wobbly frown. “W-what do I do?”
“Eh? You said you wanted to teach him a lesson! Let's go, throw some punches! A few kicks!”
She covered his face with her hands. “I've never hit anyone before!”
“But, you just did?” Mikoto adjusted his hold.
“Not like that!”
Shidou bristled. “Why is she hitting anyone?”
Reminded of her reasons, Mahiru uncovered her face. “Kazui Mukuhara – this is what you get! This is what you get for being a dirty, rotten, cheater!” She tried again, bringing her arm back. The movement seemed to pain her more than anything.
He was met with another stinging slap, despite Shidou’s protests. Kazui gasped for air, finally catching his breath now that the smoke had cleared from his lungs. His hair had fallen in front of his eyes.
“We know what you did,” Mahiru said. “Oh, we know everything.”
Mikoto made a sound of agreement from behind. “It’s pretty fucked up, comforting Shidou about loosing his wife like that, while you’re a cheater yourself.”
Kazui opened his mouth, but Mahiru interrupted.
“I don’t want to hear any excuses! Es may have forgiven you, but in the name of true love, I’m going to punish you all the same!”
Although Mikoto was stronger than Kazui had given him credit for, he didn't have the muscle to completely hold him. Kazui pulled himself from the grip, grabbing Mahiru’s wrist as she swung for him again. Shidou took a step back, as the situation fell under control.
Kazui smiled gently. “You don’t need to punish anybody. Es didn’t get the full story.” He released her.
“Oh yeah?” came her incredulous reply. She lifted her fists as if preparing for a brawl, but she had one of the worst forms he'd ever seen. She bounced on the balls of her feet, brandishing her fists. She looked like she was going to start crying.
“Mahiru, I didn’t cheat on my wife.”
“Oh thank god.” She dropped her fists.
Mikoto raised an eyebrow, either from the turn of events, or he was annoyed at how effortlessly Kazui had escaped him. “There was no other woman?”
He let out a deep laugh. “Not at all.”
“Oh, I just knew it!” Mahiru leapt forward to hug him.
“If you knew it, why did you slap me…?”
“I’m sorry! I hope it didn’t hurt! Oh, and I was going to try and hit you again… I’m so sorry!”
She pulled back from the embrace, looking to him with horror. He continued with his warm expression.
“No, no. I was just surprised. I wasn’t afraid of another hit.”
She turned to Mikoto and Shidou to express her excitement, and Kazui reached up to rub his burning cheek. His eyes flicked to Mahiru with uncertainty. He was, after all, an excellent liar.
