Music Artists I think the HOA Characters (Season 1 Specifically) would listen to!
Note: First head canon type thing I am putting on here (yay!). This is something I have thought a lot just myself in my lonesome so Id thought Id share it here! If you have any other ideas of what certain characters would listen to I would love to hear!
Nina
-> I think we as a fandom have collectively decided that Nina would 100% be a swiftie (and I agree). Her favorite album would be either Speak Now or Folklore, however, her fav song would probs be "London Boy" off of the Lover album though (for obvious reasons)
-> I can see her listening to some other softer artists like beabadobee, Clairo, and Boygenius (shes a softie at heart what can I say)
-> "All American Bitch" by Olivia Rodrigo is her confidence booster song for sure
-> Her and Amber have 2000-2010's pop music dance parties in their room together (which make annoy some of the housemates from them jumping around and dancing; also get in trouble with Victor about it but its worth it to them)
->Ok I need you guys to HEAR ME OUT with this one, but...Nina definitely is a little (just a little bit) of a theatre kid. I mean let's be real, she wrote an entire play for the school AND performed in it,,,my girl def is a little bit of a theatre girl. So with that being said, she listens to some show tunes from musicals (mostly Waitress and Mamma Mia)

Ok so this may just be a personal pet peeve I have but I can’t STAND when fanfics n such include characters listening to music that makes no sense for them to listen to
To each his own, I know everyone has their own understanding of characters; and self-projection is fun! But it’s just so exhausted and I want something that isn’t just the author using their own taste in music for once
Yes OBVIOUSLY a fictional character listening to mitski in a fan fiction doesn’t matter and I’m upset at nothing but when it’s in every single one, it can really strain the immersion
Don’t get me wrong, I love me some mitski! But variety is important, and can give a character more personality, even in fan works!
So, basically, here are my personal two cents on what I think the tbhk cast would listen to.
(If I come off as a hypocrite I give you the permission to shoot me)
Keep in mind I am not Japanese, nor anything close. My understanding of Japanese music stops at idol-game music and everything after that eludes my little brain. these are just vague ideas, to then be added to by someone more well versed than I, so do as you will. Doesn’t necessarily have to be Japanese music either, music is for everyone! Let teru listen to Rihanna! Have akane listen to one direction! Aoi listens to Belgian death metal! So yeah just take everything I say with a nice, handful of salt.
Yashiro: As shown in a volume extra (I think) Nene plays idol games! So it’s safe to assume that she enjoys J-idol music as well, which makes sense! J-pop fucks. ALSO mentioned in a volume extra, she enjoys jaded-lover-type music, which could encompass music akin to some 90’s J-Rock!
I would put suggestions here! But I am bad at listing artists - SUPER☆GIRLS is like the only J-idol group I listen to don’t hit me. ( 7/10 on the mitski meter: she could, and probably would listen to her, but only lush, only lush.)
Kou: Yeah not gonna lie if someone said he’d listen to weezer I wouldn’t have any reason to disagree, he’s very loser-rock and I mean that in the nicest way possible. Though to me he seems much more like a “I-listen-to-mainstream-rock-because-it-sound-good” type guy, keep in mind tbhk takes place in like 2014-2015 (I think) so whatever band were popular then, he probably listened to just that. Anime openings…fucking….Naruto…also, nightcore….anime openings… live that 2010’s life Kou you deserve it…be cringe…be free. (3/10 on the mitski meter: he wouldn’t, just cause he wouldn’t really encounter her in the wild. Maybe if he was recommended her…but not on his own.)
Hanako: ok look idk what the hell supernatural music sounds like so I’m just going to go off of the time period to which he was alive. Orchestras and Jazz were popular around the 1950s in Japan (along with other more western styles of music) so, that, probably, i don’t know. With Amane’s connection to music (at least vaguely) plays, musicals, and other type performances could’ve been an interest; though for Hanako, I don’t really know if he’d even have any interest in music specifically. So considering that he’d probably just listen to whatever people play around him. (5/10 on the mitski meter: totally possible, but not believable.)
Akane: m starting to blank gimmie a moment. Instrumental. That’s really all I can say. He listens to music when studying, cleaning, or performing any task where he has to focus, so anything rhythmic and calm, something to take up the brain space that isn’t doing the task at hand so he doesn’t get distracted by something else. Video game soundtracks (like Mario or some ambient bullshit), soft pop. He also seems like the kinda guy to just listen to whatever his parents play, so yes most definitely some old shit. Recommendations from Aoi or Nene. Basically just noise, a nice distraction from the horrible horrible world, yknow? (5/10 on the mitski meter: anything goes I s’pose)
Teru: Classical?? I guess?? Dude does not listen to dick, nothing, absolutely fuck all. Old classic, a nice orchestra or quartet. western or eastern it don’t matter, as long as it’s nice, repetitive, and peaceful it’ll do the job just fine. (2/10 on the mitski meter: probably too much for him to handle, man’s constantly on the edge of a mental break mitski’d kill him, maybe if he handled his underlying issues first, but until then no mitski)
Aoi: last one cause I am clocking out. Similar taste to akane, undefined and flexible. probably listens to the same stuff as Nene, though I think she probably enjoys older j-pop, just cause she seems like that, Yknow? Movie soundtracks, Anime soundtracks (shoujou, probably. Precure n such just cause Aoi seems like someone who deserves to heal her inner child, same goes for Akane as well) Similar to Teru she probably also likes the more calmer and downbeat stuff. (8/10 on the mitski meter: totally possible, I’d believe it, but she wouldn’t tell anyone, it’s her special secret.)

maya - music with nice vocals, mostly calm or just straight up depressing, like Lamp, Boa, Mitski although sometimes she would listen to Machine Girl type things where stuff is just happening
anya - she'd love all kinds of music, you can catch her listening to bach or weird al yankowic but her fav would be stuff like Gorillaz, Cigs after sex or radiohead
avery - joji, someone please help him get over his ex
isabelle - all kinds of pop music, usually the rly girly songs, the ones blasted at the radio all the time, she sings along all the time, loves kali uchis

some of these r kind of a stretch! also there's so much isen im so sorry im in love with him
isen
i hc isen to be bi with no preference
i also am in between on him being amab or afab. i see him using they/he either way tho
he's a demiboy
he's vv closeted
but remi knows
he has a (younger) twin sister and another younger (half) sister
he's found himself being in charge a lot & messing up at home, which is why he's so against taking big responsibilities (like when he becomes jack)
they have severe anxiety
and also undiagnosed adhd
he's good at keeping secrets but if anyone were to simply ask them about one he'd be like really bad at deflecting it
he had a really good relationship with his father until it was noticed that younger half sister was a product of an affair so then his parents got divorced and isen lost contact
his stepdad is nice but isen doesn't find themselves to be as close to him as their siblings are and it makes him a lil upset
he's still really family oriented even though he kind of resents his mom for the whole affair
they work a job as a janitor at night so his siblings can have some spare money
his mom is chronically ill
oh oh and his twin sister goes to a school outside of wellston because she's rlly smart
isen's not vv open about his family, he'll only mention them if remi says something about rei first or if blyke talks about his mom

Sam:
1. ALWAYS wants to be riley’s type. so whenever she was dating jordan, HE WOULD DRESS LIKE JORDAN. if he saw riley spare a glance over at some girl, HE WOULD DRESS LIKE THAT GIRL THE VERY NEXT DAY. in other words he has no sense of style himself.
2. he didn’t ALWAYS have his stutter. it developed by the time he was six. also it’s genetic, not any sort of brain trauma or anything - his dad had a stutter when he was young too, but went to speech therapy and eventually fixed it.
3. speaking of which HE DOES HAVE A DAD YALL!!! HE’S ALWAYS OVERSEAS FOR WORK!! VEGA DADDY FOR THE WIN!! and no he’s not abusive or anything either lmao he’s just a busy man.
Evelyn:
1. yes she lived in the UK up until she was fourteen. she’s sixteen now. so she’s only been in the USA for about two years and she regrets coming.
2. she lives with her uncle alfie after the passing of her parents. he’s very distant and barely associates himself with her, but makes sure she’s well taken care of before she turns eighteen and gains all the money her parents left behind. so yeah he’s aight ig
3. she’s very good at horseback riding. (she took lessons from the time she was a kid.) however, she never puts any of that talent to use considering she HATES TOUCHING ANIMALS so yeah that ended quick.
Thomas:
1. had a prosthetic arm (left side) since the time he was nine. how did he lose the first arm? that’s a good question you should ask him!! sometimes it’s because of self harm and losing all circulation after trying to commit, other times it’s because he was kidnapped and the joker himself sawed it off. (he will never tell anyone)
2. he has his own band and plays at parties sometimes. the cooler thing is that david nixon is the drum player even though he despises thomas <3 but a deal’s a deal right? also it works out in the end for both of them bc thomas gets all the chics after singing and david gets all the dudes after playing.
3. a bit of common knowledge but - he has three siblings. an older brother, a younger sister, and a little brother. he hates them all equally. however, they aren’t actually full siblings. they’re all half. Adrian (their father) had babies with FOUR DIFFERENT WOMEN!! role model, am i right? also thomas hates every member of his family lmao.
Lucian:
1. LUCIAN WILLIAMS HAS A TYPE!!! fluffy hair, freckles, a grunge/gothic style, and FUCKED UP TEETH!!!!! GAAAAH!!! both his exes had fucked up teeth (aka sophia had braces and david was missing a lot of his), and now his current boyfriend does. (bitch is a shark.) like shit. he loves those fucked up teeth. <3
2. he has tons of scars. like. tons. and you might be thinking TRAUMA!!!!! bc yes. trauma. however, a lot of them are from him being a dumbass as a kid. he would climb the top of a tree and fall off it. he would swing on his neighbor’s tire swing and fall into a pile of hoarded trash with glass in it. he would try to pull a root out of the concrete stairs and slice his shins after he fell. he is clumsy.
3. it’s time fess up….he’s not a total skinny legend no mo. he works out and is actually PRETTY BUILT. he ain’t got no six pack or nothing but he has nice ass triceps tbh……..and that’s on having an axe as a go-to weapon <3
💤 - is your oc a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper? how are their sleeping habits?
Sam: pretty light sleeper. he’ll wake up whenever he hears footsteps, or when his curtains blow in the wind, or when the fridge turns on. he usually peeks under his eyelashes and then just goes back to sleep.
Evelyn: light sleeper. any little noise makes her sit up and check her surroundings, even if it’s just her furnace turning on. she’s still half asleep when this happens though, so she goes back to sleep pretty easily too.
Thomas: DEEP FUCKING SLEEPER LMAO. you think he cares if there’s a nuclear war outside his window? bro as long as it don’t make one side of his pillow hot…
Lucian: deep sleeper when it comes to noise, light sleeper when it comes to any movement in the room. if anyone touches him, he’s up. if anyone applies pressure to the mattress, he’s up. if any footsteps are in the room, he’s up. you get the point. he will jerk awake if he feels someone else is there with him. (trauma) it’s not so easy for him to lay back down either. depending on what happened, he usually stays up for the rest of night. (this improves if kai’s sleeping with him bc he feels safe.)

moca is one of the most pretentious motherfuckers around. she only listens to shit that only like, 2 other people have even heard of. the type of music you'd find on a cd in the clearance section of a thrift store in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. anything less obscure than that and she'll carry on about how it's too popular and it's record label-pleasing garbage. if you're in the car with her, might as well pass her the aux so she'll keep her mouth shut. or better yet just don't play any music at all and spend the car ride in awkward silence cause most of this shit is obscure af for a reason

Benrey definitely likes the Oozes and also Dazey and the Scouts. Bastard music supremacy, good for ruining karaoke nights and getting everyone sent home at 2am /hj. Listens to that shit so loud you can hear it through her headphones. If you comment on it they grin at you and play it louder
I don't think Tommy listens to music much, to him it's one of those things where you don't touch it for ages and then Very Briefly But Strongly Hyperfixate over. That being said they probably listen to The Scary Jokes and Hozier for comfort purposes when they're overwhelmed every now and then
Bubby... fucking loves Queen. You'll rarely, if ever, find it listening to anything else. you're ever wondering why ze's still up at 3am it's because ze was listening to Queen and dancing around his room with the air of a true performer. Fat-Bottomed Girls is a particular favorite of hers <3
Harold, like Tommy, probably doesn't really listen to music as much as the rest. He probably likes listening to old music in other languages than English because he likes the feel of different sounds and syllables. He also likes when the team sends him really low quality songs that sound like they went through a paper shredder
Gwendolen probably almost exclusively listens to piano music/piano covers of music on YouTube. Circus Contraption, Tom Lehrer and Tally Hall are the only artists she listens to normally without vigorously scouring the web for piano covers of their music (because they are just so good on their own). Her and Harold have a playlist of piano covers and old music with like 200 songs - Bubby got ahold of one of their phones at some point and changed the playlist name to "Nerd music" and they haven't changed it back

Im so sorry sam please dont be mad at me but I just don’t like her that much. She’s so #QUIRKY and its really grating. And I know that she didn’t formally complete her training but she is NOT a good ship’s counselor. If i went to my therapist and told her i was depressed or whatever and she was like “yeah sometimes i wanna kill myself too 😋 the #intrusivethoughts are so AWKO TACO!!” i think i would blow my brains out. But in Field of Fire when she was trying to solve that murder case and was hunting down that vulcan guy with a cool gun that was the ONE epsiode where i liked her and thought she was cool. I would like her more if she was badass like that more of the time

Hi!! It's my first album review!!! How exciting!!!! Lately I've been really into the Blue Album by Weezer (you can laugh at me all you want), and so I thought I'd write my first review on it. The standard version has 10 songs. My favorites are Only In Dreams, No One Else, Undone - The Sweater Song, Buddy Holly, and In The Garage in that order!
Only In Dreams starts off with a super catchy and memorable bassline, which is probably what captivated me the most. Any song with a sick bassline is bound to capture my interest. When the guitars kick in, you *know* this is going to be a song you listen to on repeat. I also really enjoy the lyrics of the first verse. "You can't avoid her, she's in the air / In between molecules of oxygen and carbon dioxide," is such a great hyperbole because it takes one step further from just saying "she's in the air," which is used commonly. The exaggeration of her being IN BETWEEN molecules and co2 is really helpful to understand the narrator's constant state of mind about this girl. The layering of an electric guitar playing the same riff as the bass after the second chorus makes the song come crashing down (in a good way). Like the reality that you have this relationship only in a dream is suddenly hitting and it's making you more and more upset by the second. Then, there's the buildup with the bass and the ride and the guitar to the solo. Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer and guitarist, said this was one of his favorite solos, and I can definitely see why. This entire song encapsulates teenage yearning in my opinion. And the key resolution at the end of the song???? Perfection!!! Since this is a closer and I'm a sucker for closers that sound like closers, I have to point that out.
No One Else is a song from the perspective of an obsessive, controlling partner. I mostly just like this song because the chorus is hella catchy. If I go to a Weezer concert sometime in my lifetime and they play this song, I will burst the entire crowd's eardrums by screaming "I WANT A GIRL WHO WILL LAUGH FOR NO ONE ELSE" so loudly that they'll have to sue me for causing them bodily harm. Also they might think I'm screaming so loudly because I relate to this song, which would stink. Anyway. Weezer is just so brilliant at finding the most coming-of-age movie-like guitar chords and making songs that make me feel like *a teenager*. Like a proper, stereotypical teenager. But in a good way.
As for Undone, the main riff is so suave. Apparently Rivers wrote it about depression but it quickly and unexpectedly became a song people found funny. Nonetheless, Undone is a song I would walk in the middle of hallways to. It makes me feel like it's me against the world, and I've got everything under control. The lyrics of the verses feel like repetition of thoughts that eventually lead to destruction. "Oh no, it go, it gone, bye-bye, who I, I think, I sink, and I die." Also, I can see why people thought it was funny, because the line "it's good to see you lying there in your superman skivvies" always makes me smile. Also, the fact that this was their debut song. They were off to a great start.
Ah, Buddy Holly. Reaching critical acclaim to being one of Weezer's defining songs. Also having one of the most iconic licks of all time that people play and say "you just got weezered!" to. I think the reason this song is so good for me is because of solid 90s nerd-defending-his-friend-that-he-loves-oh-so-dearly-against-all-odds vibes I get from it. The "ooh-wee-ooh I look just Buddy Holly, oh oh and you're Mary Tyler Moore" is a line that solidifies the relationship the narrator has with their friend or partner or whomever the song is meant for. It's something you'd say to your best friend as a kid, and then we get hit with the "I don't care what they say about us anyway" which just gives anyone listening that surge of confidence and child-like joy. I also go feral when I hear the song start to play because "What's with these homies dissing my girl?" is such a monumental way to start a song off with.
I love how In The Garage transitions from a harmonica and acoustic guitar to punchy electric guitar. The verses' rhythm force you to move some body part along with the song. It's trancing but in a goofy way. The crunchy bass in the second verse is also very enticing. As for the meaning of the song, it's about someone who feels like their safe space is their garage (shocker!) and that's literally it. How Rivers Cuomo manages to make such timeless songs about such mundane things is beyond me. In The Garage is almost an anthem of sorts. It's for all the dance-like-no-one's-looking people, the I-have-a-million-figurines-of-geeky-stuff-that-I-would-probably-get-made-fun-of-for people, the I-do-silly-little-guitar-moves-when-playing-air-guitar people.
The Blue Album is such a cohesive and brilliantly produced album. From songs about prosaic settings to songs about deep and intense romantic love that would never work out, this album was one of the quickest albums to become part of my favorites. I have no regrets about making my first album review a Weezer album. If you for some reason decided to take time out of your precious life to read this entire thing, thanks!
