Alright, guys! I got another awesome discovery to post (courtesy of my cousin...again)!
My cousin stayed at the Three Village Inn in Stony Brook. We actually drove past it in 2017 when I visited Setauket, but I never went inside. So my cousin just recently was staying there and sent me pics...the cottages are all named after members of the Culper Spy Ring!!!
Tumblr media
She made sure to send me a pic of the Tallmadge cottages sign XD
Tumblr media
But anyway, I thought this was too cute NOT to share. I want to stay here so badly! The pictures on Google of the place are beautiful! Have any of you fine Tumblr folk stayed here before?

It's a Trap | John Graves Simcoe
Tumblr media
Summary: Captain Simcoe plans a trap for the rebels by using Tallmadge's sister.
Not my GIF. I am basing this one shot on season 1, but his face here looks perfect.
No one knew what happened to Captain John Graves Simcoe during his imprisonment with the rebels. The British man wasn't one to talk about it. Nonetheless, the imprisonment didn't make him a better person. He was an evil man and continued his wicked ways against anyone that crossed him. Although, he seemed to acquire a new target once he was no longer a prisoner. His main focus shifted the younger sister of Benjamin Tallmadge and rumored love of Caleb Brewster.
Susannah Tallmadge was the youngest in the family. She was often seen with Anna Strong after her father was imprisoned. Her mother died when she was young and her brothers were fighting in the war. Some would say that they were on the wrong side of the war. Her family were rebel sympathizers. They longed to be free from English rule. Many of their friends turned on them when the information came out.
The young woman was used to the stares and whispers from their old friends when she walked around town. However, the constant stares of Captain Simcoe left her uneasy. Across a room or across a field, he made sure that she knew that he was there. She didn't realize how her life would change when he decided to start speaking to her.
"Miss Tallmadge," his soft voice sounded in the room. He was the only one in the tavern with her. Anna had taken some time to rest. Running a tavern alone had taken it's toll on her since Selah was arrested.
"Yes, Captain?" She asked and watched him. He had on a white powder wig that she hated so much. His blue eyes looked her up and down. The woman before him was a mess. Sweat caused her brown locks to mat to her face and neck. Her face flushed red from keeping up the demands of the soldiers. Her clothes were a mess on her slender frame.
"It seems you and I have something in common," he pointed out. His eyes met hers to get a reaction. "We both are acquainted with a particular fellow,"
"I'm sure you and I know many people here, sir," she smiled briefly. "Setauket doesn't have many people,"
Captain Simcoe stood from his seat. He easily towered over her. She stared at his red coat before looking up. His gaze now burned with a fire she knew not to play with. He smiled and said nothing.
"I should really get back to cleaning then. I," she bowed her head and turned around. Captain Simcoe grabbed her elbow. Susannah turned her head to face him. She froze in her place. A familiar symptom of dread spread down her spine.
"Would you like to know this particular fellow that I am speaking about?" He asked. His grip tightening around her elbow. There was only one correct answer here.
"I... Sure," she forced a smile. His grip immediately loosened and then he let go.
"His name is Caleb Brewster. Ever heard of him?"
"I may have ran into him once upon a time. He sounds familiar. He is friends with my brothers," she downplayed the relationship. Her heart pounded in her ears. Butterflies flew around in her stomach. The corners of his mouth raised in an evil smile.
"Perfect. Now I know the face you are making when you lie,"
"I... I'm not,"
"He is rather fond of you for someone that you ran into once upon a time," he interrupted. She gulped as her breath caught into her throat. The room felt like it was getting hotter. "Love is a great weakness,"
"We aren't in..."
"Love? Oh my dear that was all he talked about to your brother when those cowards held me. Torturing an officer, despicable," he muttered with a look of disgust.
"Captain, I don't understand," she whispered almost afraid to hear her own voice.
"I thought perhaps imprisoning your father and Brewster's uncle would draw them here, but I think you would make a greater prize for my trap," he smiled. She closed her eyes as a tear slid down her cheek.
"Now, now. Save these for the gallows," he smiled and wiped the tear from her cheek. "The fun has just begun,"

It's very fine to meet you, Mrs. Woodhull. I seem to remember your husband as a much quieter man.

[Thank you to whoever made these stills available, link here.]
I was rewatching S01E04 Eternity How Long and I remembered having the same slight cognitive dissonance the first time I watched this episode:
[Spoilers!]
"Is this presumably religious man really going to use headstones from consecrated ground to fortify a barracks?"
As a piece of writing, getting the Loyalists to dig up the headstones to their own ancestors to help fortify the barracks is brilliantly inflammatory. It's a real crisis of faith for Judge Woodhull, who so far hasn't paid any personal price for his loyalty to the crown. No, indeed, he's been profiting left, right and centre, both from his own estate and the estate of people like Selah Strong, whose crop he's selling before the estate it's on has even transferred ownership.
But it always struck me as just a bit too... cruel. Especially coming from Hewlett, who so far has been the model of discipline and what he considers fair-minded decency. Sure, he's nettled by Caleb's escape but still. A desecration like this? As a shield for cannon fire?
So I looked it up.
And was surprised to discover a number of things, including that there was, in fact, a Lt. Col. Richard Hewlett stationed at the church at that time, only he was from Long Island, with a family established there for generations. (Also, apparently those white wigs were out of fashion during the American Revolution?? News to me, I wonder what they would have looked like, then!)
And though he didn't repurpose the gravestones as barricades, here's an account from Zechariah Greene, one of the raiders from the Continental Army at the Battle of Setauket:
The tombstone of Rev. George Phillips and those of many others were destroyed by the British army, who built a fort around the church and cast up the bones of the dead. They destroyed the pulpit and the whole inside work of the church. Colonel Richard Hewlett commanded this body of men.
So the show took a bit of license as no headstones were used as barricades. However, constructing earth-works definitely destroyed the churchyard and disturbed bones. Oof. No win for consecrated ground here. (Ironic that in the show, Major Hewlett specifically assures Judge Woodhull that he won't be exhuming any bodies. Probably the sound judgment of one of the producers.)
So alright, I'll concede that narrative point.
One thing that definitely didn't happen, though, was the conversion of the church into a stables (sorry, Bucephalus). This has always struck me as a bit weird but I didn't know any better at the time so I figured, "historical people doing unhygienic things, whatever". But no, sensible minds have always existed and there's no earthly reason you would put a stable in a church. And they didn't, we know they didn't, because at the Battle of Setauket, the Continental Army stole a few horses that were tied up outside upon their retreat. Horses they could not have stolen had they been in a stable inside the church. (Although, if anyone's going to steal a horse from inside a church behind enemy lines, it would probably be Caleb who was, in fact, there that day.)

The Setauket Letters: Benjamin
A letter by Benjamin Tallmadge to his father, Reverend Nathaniel Tallmadge, in the Winter of 1769, written in New Haven, Connecticut Colony
Dearest Father,
There is more to this world than Setauket. I knew it when I left, but now I am seeing it for myself, with my own eyes. I walk the same streets you did, learn the same things as you- but I am also learning for myself. You always said I would never be content with the answers given to me in the books and words of men I’m meant to listen to, and you were right. Everyday there are new answers to seek. The talk in New Haven is so different than at home it feels otherworldly, fantastical. And yet I cannot hear enough of it.
The people of New England do not sit silently and only open their mouths to raise toasts to the King. There are protests, pamphlets, action. I remember hearing about it when I was younger, but now I can read them, now I can make the decisions for myself. My thoughts are full of the lessons we can use from the past, bring them into the present and make ourselves stronger. Should we light a fire under ourselves, under a cause we have never thought about before? It keeps me awake at night. I must confess, I can barely focus on my prayers. I apologize for the disappointment that will cause you, but surely you understand, Father.
Selfishly, I am not the only one kept awake. My roommate is a boy from here, Nathan Hale. He has ties to Anna Strong’s family.
(Please give her my thoughts if you see her. I think her father would be inclined to agree with me. Mr. Woodhull would not, and would burn my letters to Abraham if he had the chance to read them.)
Hale and I get along nicely- so far, he is a good friend, as good as the ones I left behind at home. He is also a younger son. When I keep him up with my light, we talk about someday traveling to Boston. Perhaps we could attend a town meeting- they are talked of all through New England.
I wish you could meet him. Perhaps he will join me on a trip home.
Though, a part of me does not want to come home, Father. At least, not yet. That town is stifling. I do not how long I would be able to endure the dreaded silence, the buried talk. The thought of hearing a lecture from the Magistrate makes me want to jump into the sound and swim far away.
If I stay here, I will make you proud. I promise you.
Tell my friends about my letter.
Your faithful son,
Benjamin

Random plot idea I want to see: inspired by the r.dr2 storyline of Jack going missing, but imagine Sprout/Thomas ending up missing for whatever reason. Abe is many things, but we are certain he loves Sprout a ton, so imagine how much Abe's reckless tendencies would get. Alongside Mary's own tension and Richard's own turmoil as well. How the spy ring would be strained by Abe's lack of involvement and his risky endeavors.

OPEN STARTER: Genevieve Hawkins
Tumblr media
With Edmund deep in a discussion with 2 other Colonels about what to do after the events the previous day, Genevieve had snuck downstairs from where her husband always kept her out of the way from company.
She had heard that there was a captive from the enemy (not that she really thought of them as such herself) being held in one of the cells in the basement and, knowing how they were sometimes treated as well as not having had any contact with anyone outside of those she encountered at the balls and events she was allowed to attend as well as the servants of the house, Genevieve wanted to at least get to meet them.
And so, when she saw that one of the servants had been tasked with taking a tray of food and water down to the captive, Genevieve offered to take it for them. Saying that Edmund and the other Colonels should have the full attention of the entire staff. The servant hesitated for a moment before relenting and letting her carry the tray before heading back to their station.
Breathing in deeply and readying herself, Genevieve made her way down to the basement where she knew the cells were. A mixture of excitement and nervousness swirling around inside her as she carefully descended the steps. Wondering just what the person was going to be like.
Slowly walking over towards the cell with the only light being from the small barred window like holes on the base of the street level above, Genevieve swallowed and tilted her head to try and see the captive. Crouching down as she reached the bars of the cell and placing the tray upon the floor.
"I wanted to bring you your food..."

This scene where Richard has his epiphany about the gravestones, and Abe is so proud of him . . . until he realizes what the epiphany is.
“I’ll go to Hewlett, and I’ll give him what for!”
“Yes, father!”
“I’ll take a shovel, and I’ll .  .”
“YES!!”
“. . . dig up your brother’s gravestone.”
“That’s telling him, Fa . . . . . . . wait, what?”
