There's a massive sense of delaying a change. Internally it's trying to find a footing and seeing the ground crumble around you. It's a change you were both expecting but also not realizing how close it is now in comparison to before. There's a lot of good which will come of it and yet it's also very easy to worry about how it'll all happen. It's easy to try and laugh it off as if it isn't a big deal. But internally it's a sense of impending doom or dread. Not that it really is either of those, but all these different emotions are crumbling up in one big ball and it's hard to pull them out to make it more tangible. Stop trying to distract your mind with scrolling on social media and have some deep breathes. In and out, in and out. If it's too much to do anything other than be more conscious of your breathing, then make sure to do it. Whatever happens will be better than the last. Whatever happens will not be worse than the challenges you've already faced. You've grown stronger and whatever is going to happen will occur, you have more than enough to take it on. In and out, in and out.

got talking with @void-damned about Whalers and decided to revisit an old canon-compliant story I started writing back in winter

short snippet under cut

“I thought you’re on patrol tonight.” Billie rights her bandolier in front of the old cracked mirror. Her eyes meet Thomas’s through the reflection as he looks up from an old book he’s cradling in his arms. One of the corners is crumpled under his fingers as he fidgets with the paper. Billie doubts he’s progressed on the page in the past ten minutes she’s spent righting her gear.

Thomas hums, turns the page. He chooses a different page as his next victim as he speaks. “Daud told me to take the night off,” he explains. His eyes skip over the words – the text makes little sense. The past two pages barely processed in his mind. Instead, he asks: “You got a job tonight?”

Billie tightens her belt, pats down her pockets. “Yep,” she replies. “Some noble prick.”

The paper rips under Thomas’s ministrations.

“Rosethorn Hall?”

Their eyes meet once more.

“You know the place?” Billie inquires with a raised eyebrow.

“Unfortunately.” Thomas drops his eyes back to his book. “Intimately, even.”

“Shit,” Billie mutters. “Is that-”

“Don’t worry about it,” Thomas interrupts her. He curls the bottom corner of his book, pushing the paper up, up the page. “No hard feelings.”

Billie nods, unhooks her mask from her belt. It slips easy over her face, the straps long adjusted so they don’t dig into her ears. Her voice echoes dully through the mask. “I’ll be off.”

Thomas doesn’t acknowledge her again, not until the hinges creak and Billie steps into the door. Then, almost an afterthought, he calls, “Billie?”

She pauses.

“In bocca al lupo.”

A smile creeps into her voice.

“Viva.”

#literally just currently thinking about Daud and The Flooded District and metaphor and the concept of The Narrative and roles #and being Serkonan and not really being Part of this but also you're indelibly part of it and being removed from it all #and how everything in this district does not matter and how everything here matters more than anything #Daud as gleefully engaging in the metaphor on purpose until he is being driven mad that nobody else sees the tandem of the narrative themes #The Flooded District as both the heart (haha) of the symbolism but also so distant from the meat of the narrative and what Corvo cares abou #being so genre aware it becomes like eldritch horror to you. being so far from what matters that suddenly your actions are more meaningful #this gang of butchers in a figurative butcher's market (the former Financial District) laying on top of a former literal butcher's place #this height of metaphor that is also so removed from the narrative that anything you do here doesn't “matter” per se #against a villain who is cracking under feeling he is the only one truly WITNESSING it all and is trying to exit the narrative #and that is the one place where you can choose actual mercy—BECAUSE of these things #the first real mission in the game where your only objective is to get out. where revenge is truly optional. where mercy is real and true. #among these assassins called whalers. in a flooded financial district overrun with plague where they butchered the first leviathans. #“And yet you choose... mercy. So while developing the storyline of my Dishonored fan fiction, Outsider’s Gift, I’ve come to the realization that the mc’s mother, Marisa, has a more interesting story than her. Like, I have more of her storyline planned out than that of Outsider’s Gift.

I guess I’ll have a second Dishonored fan fiction to write. Lawd have merthy! Not that I’m complaining about ideas coming to me, I just…I have so much school and then novels I’m trying to write where will I find the time? 😩
