Something I absolutely love about the alternate-timeline aspect of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is that it really feels like a logical extrapolation and ‘next-step’ to the genre/trope-subversion and exploration of the original comic.
Remember how the whole idea of Scott Pilgrim the comic is taking a very basic, generic and ‘tropey’ premise; ‘Boy likes girl, boy must defeat girl’s seven evil exes in order to date her’, and uses it as the backdrop and framework to explore, deconstruct and develop its characters.
Like how the biggest conflict at any given point of the comic is never the actual battles with any of the Seven Evil Exes, but rather Scott being forced to confront some major problem with himself or his relationship with Ramona (usually the former). How the true ultimate ‘antagonist’ for both Scott and Ramona isn’t any of the Evil Exes, but rather themselves. Their own long-festering hang-ups and insecurities that they’ve been refusing to confront or acknowledge that have in turn led to them being pretty shitty people over the course of their lives. For as bad as Gideon is, he’s still only a mirror showing all the bad that SCOTT could become.
So with that in mind, it really feels like the anime simply took this idea a step further: What if we took the basic, generic and tropey premise that nonetheless served as the framework for the story and held it together… and broke it.
When the narrative guide and scaffolding that held the original story on a certain course is shattered when the story is just getting started, where does the story go?
It’s actually one of the ways I think Scott Pilgrim Takes Off can be appreciated even if you haven’t read the comic or watched the movie. Even if you aren’t familiar with the story, the first episode makes it pretty easy to guess how this story should play out: Scott meets Ramona, they have their first date, they really hit it off and seem set to become a couple. We’re introduced to what clearly seems to be our ‘Big Bad’ in Gideon and our ‘Starter Villain’ in Matthew. Again, even if you don’t know one thing about Scott Pilgrim, by the time Matthew Patel crashes the party you probably have a pretty good idea how this whole story SHOULD go.
And then Matthew (seemingly) KILLS SCOTT in their first fight!
THEN the second episode ratchets things up even further when all signs point to Scott, our title character, being ACTUALLY DEAD for real. And then Matthew, again the guy who should be the starter villain, goes and beats Gideon Graves, the guy who clearly SHOULD have been the FINAL BOSS of this story!
And then the third episode sees Ramona, the girl previously set-up as the designated love-interest, firmly established as the new PROTAGONIST of the story. With Ramona given both an overarching goal in finding what really happened to Scott, and an ongoing character-arc of meeting and reconciling with each of her ‘evil exes’.
Basically, even if you aren’t familiar with the full specifics of the source material, I feel like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off can still be enjoyed as essentially a show that at first sets up what seems to be a fairly wrote and predictable story before flying COMPLETELY off the rails at the end of its first episode into something quite a bit more unique.

Watched the new Scott pilgrim show, spoilers ahead:
I genuinely love that they took the idea of "what if all villains get redeemed" and ran with it allowing us to see a ton of fun dynamics we never would've gotten to otherwise.
Also knives getting a non romantic arc and becoming friends with Stephen. Genuinely I enjoyed this series so much more than I thought I would. I knew I'd like it but them taking Scott out of the equation for a bit and letting Ramona grow and find closure, meaning those she hurt also gain closure, was such a big brained move.
Every character got developed and given a happy ending. Truly a delightful watch.

so me and a friend have joked about todd ingram of scott pilgrim fame just being vegan bakugou katsuki (with the blond hair and black skull tshirt and black pants) back in like 2021 or so. and this joke didn't really go anywhere bc it was 2021 and there were no new scott pilgrim things coming out and who cares about what i think. but now i can say it again and say it again with confidence bc

scott and wallace are absolutely fucking insane to me. one is a deeply solipsistic and manipulative person who doesn't even realise it because he's cosplaying so hard as a normal dude. the other is his closest friend, cannot stand him half the time, but still keeps him around anyway because he's sort of a selfish manipulative asshole himself. one lives with the other rent free. they sleep in the same bed. neither of them want to have sex with each other but one of them is actively hooking up with someone who shares a name with the other, sometimes in the bed they share and sometimes he sleeps over afterwards. one is gay and polyamorous and the other is straight and couldn't hold down a relationship with one girl to save his life. i say all of this as a compliment to wallace and an absolute insult to scott. nobody is doing it like them.

I'm pretty sure lots of other people in the scott pilgrim universe notice how scott and wallace share clothes together..... Like i know its a common thing mentioned by everyone in the fandom, but I'm genuinely interested in seeing how other characters react to it. Stacey Pilgrims is the first one to notice during their college years btw. She goes to the kitchen at 2am to get snacks and wallace is there wearing only scott's shirt and his boxers... "Did you have gay sex with my brother?" "No, but he did throw up on me." He asks stacey where the hangover pills are and just leaves the scene after

Scott forgetting to take off his binder. Like. Him just forgetting. Literally just not remembering that he put it on earlier that day and not realizing how long its been since he started wearing it.
Wallace being there every time to remind him. Always there to make sure he's safe. There to let him know its been hours since he put it on, reminding him that he needs to take a break.
"Hey, guy. You put your binder on this morning, right? You should take it off soon." And Scott just going. "Oh!! Shit!! Thx man!! Totally forgot!!" Like sighhh. They're so. Sigghh.

Noah is canonically the youngest of eight sibling. Eight.
You don't grow up in a family that large, as the youngest and therefore the favourite victim, and not have a super casual relationship with touch.
This guy is light enough to be literally blown away by a strong breeze; if you think even for a second that his family didn't take turns carrying him around like a briefcase and abducting him from whatever he was doing into a Family Pile™ then you're objectively wrong.
(You also can't convince me that he wasn't spoiled rotten as the baby of the family.)
So frequent platonic touching is pretty normal for him, expected even, and he tends to be more tactile than his personality or demeanour would suggest.
He gives Owen side-hugs and pats on the arm every time the two interact, and wilfully flops himself onto Eva whenever he's overwhelmed and wants the company of someone comparatively quiet (she always uses it as an excuse to carry him to the gym and encourage him to bulk up, though it never works). He tries to tire out Izzy's boundless energy by play-fighting and grappling with her (much to his chagrin) despite him essentially ending up as her glorified chew toy, and often times passes out due to being a stick insect in human form.
It's unexpected, just how casually clingy he is to the people he trusts/likes.
But you know who isn't used to physical contact?
Cody E.J. "my parents forgot my birthday" Anderson
This wet noodle of a boy bigs himself up as a ladies' man and a hot commodity but wouldn't know what to do with himself if someone held his hand. The concept of affection of any kind is so foreign to him, especially positive physical contact- I wouldn't be surprised if he could count the amount of hugs his parents had given him on one hand.
And this is backed by his canonical desperation for acknowledgement! Every time he pursues Gwen, even when he's directly shot down and sometimes harshly rejected, he still tries to win her affections and festers the delusion that she likes him. After all, everyone who's supposed to care about him does the same! His parents, 'friends' or lack thereof, ect.; they all ignore/rebuff him so it must be a sign of endearment.
Additionally, he sleeps with a stuffed emu at the ripe age of 16/17- as stated by Sierra, which he never denies (not that there's anything wrong with that, stuffed animals are top tier imho). You know who else sleeps with stuffed animals? Touch-starved people.
Cody is incredibly attention-starved, touch-starved and, post World Tour, in all likelihood somewhat touch-averse- at least when it comes to other people initiating contact.
To elaborate; Sierra is constantly breaching his personal bubble non-consensually, which would inadvertently condition anyone into being at least a little haphephobic, but Cody himself is more than happy to instigate contact with people he trusts (i.e. hugging Alejandro when he protects Cody from Sierra overnight in Rapa Phooey!).
...See where I'm going with this?
We see these two cuddling twice in canon; once in the Awake-a-thon and again in the Celebrity Manhunt. Once is happenstance, but twice indicates a pattern or coincidence but I'm going to gloss over that for the sake of this post.
Plus, with their consistent proximity during Action, they had plenty of time to form some type of relationship be it friendly or more.
(Wouldn't you want to at the very least get some closure from the guy who kissed you/you kissed for the world to see? It would be awkward to completely ignore each other, and they literally shared a cabin at one point so it's not like they were strangers either. So of course they're at least cordial from Action onwards.)
Then, as Noah becomes more comfortable around Cody, his tactile tendancies come to play.
Cody, predictably, reacts skittishly at the alien phenomenon known as friendly touch and tries to play it off to preserve his cool-guy image. Except Noah's not falling for it. He's observant, if emotionally illiterate, and watching the guy you just backpatted in greeting jump five feet into the air and screech like a falcon is a flashing red alarm for even the most empathetically challenged people.
Eventually, Noah gets Cody to divulge his issues with human contact and offers his assistance to the brunette. If giving his pal a hug every now and then, and letting him in turn initiate whatever he's comfortable with, would help him overcome his rocky relationship with touch then Noah is more than happy to oblige. It's not like it's out of the norm for him, so he doesn't mind at all.
Then, gradually, Cody loses his touch aversion.
But a lifetime of isolation won't be magically cured that easily, and he finds himself craving Noah's embrace more and more. Again, the taller of the two is content to give him what he wants. Their agreement evolves into the duo napping together and feeding into Noah's sleep-hugging habit, or just spending quality time in a heap of pretzeled limbs under a weighted blanket.
(Whether their relationship is platonic or romantic is entirely up to interpretation, though I'm partial to the two being friends who are just Like That since it allows for the funniest potential character interactions. The bromance is real.)
That's as good a place as any to end the post, before I end up writing a whole drabble.

Something funny/cool I've noticed about the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off soundtrack is that with all the keyboard and synth, a lot of its tracks have a real moody, cyberpunk feel when you listen to them on their own.
youtube
Like in addition to having the absolute PERFECT name, Ramona's and Roxie's big reconciliation theme feels like something right out of Bladerunner.
