The Golden Child Part I

SAGAU & Impostor AU where the reader is the child of the actual creator.

The fedora your father had gifted you made it impossible to see what was happening around you. Ever since he woke you up in a hurry so early in the morning, he refused to tell you what exactly was going on. Instead, he took you to the city of Liyue, a place you knew well as he would let you join some travels he had to make thanks to his work.

The city was exactly as you remembered it, it's just that you had never seen so many people gathered in one place. They appeared to be celebrating something, for there were a lot of people standing in a platform before all the crowd. Your father shoved many people off so you both could stand somewhat close. If it weren't for the oversized hat he forced you to wear, maybe you'd have heard and see what the commotion was about. The only hint you had was the moving feet of the ones closest to you, followed by muffled screaming and cheering. You could only look up to see your father, only to find his face drowned in terror. He seemed to notice your gaze against him as he held you closer and gently shoved your face in his chest.

"It's okay, it's okay, it's okay..." he whispered time and time again. More than you, he seemed to be saying this for himself.

Soon the cheering became shouts of agony, something made the crowd stop celebrating and replace their cheers of happyness for pure anguish. You wanted to raise the fedora and see what was going on but your father quickly put it down and started running away.

Now all the voices were starting to become more and more distant. You could no longer see the streets made of stone, only the grass and dirt that made up the way from Liyue to your secluded house in the woods. It was only halfway through when you were able to return the hat to him.

"Papa, what's happening?"

He didn't answer your question, he just kept running straight to the house.

Upon arriving he let you go on the sofa and quickly started to gather clothes and provisions, making a mess out of the cabin.

"Papa?" you asked again, and this time he turned to you, crouching to your level so he could see you in the eyes.

"Stardust, I need you to carefully hear my words, okay?" He gave a soft smile at your nod. "Remember how we talked to you about those people that were trying to harm your tata?"

You nodded once again, not knowing why your parent was brought up in the conversation. Speaking of them, where were they? You looked around the room for a second before your father put both his hands in your cheeks so you were only looking at him.

"Look at me, stardust. Those people... they took your tata. And now they're looking for us." He did his best not to let a sob out. He would have time to mourn later when they both were safe. "We have to go. Take whatever you can carry in your arms and let's depart."

He immediately rushed to finish his task. We're his words true? Was your tata... taken? That's why all the people in Liyue were celebrating? Did those people hate your family that much...? You wanted to cry, but the shout of your father to hurry up made you shake these thoughts and run to your bedroom. The tears started to flow silently as you grabbed some clothes and your stuffed animal. You could not leave it here, it was made by your parent's hand...

All the items were thrown into a little backpack and you quickly went to the front door where your father was already with the door open and scanning the forest.

He turned to you. "Ready, dear? I need you to be brave, okay? I will protect you no matter what."

Before you could even nod he already had your hand in his and started running into the woods. You took one last look at your little house, watching it get smaller and smaller with each step. It made your little heart hurt, thinking that this might be the last time seeing it. This felt so foreign to those times where you departed with your father just like this, holding hands and your parent saying goodbye from the doorframe.

Soon there was nothing more than trees and tall grass to look at. The green scenery started to slowly become more yellow and rocky. He never took you this far... was this still even Liyue?

"Just a little more..." He assured you, tugging at your hand every time you started to fall behind.

You couldn't help it. Your legs were small and you were starting to get tired. Plus, there was this weird feeling that somebody was watching you, making you look in every direction trying to find the source and almost tripping a few times for not paying attention to the ground.

The rocky ground started to overtake nature. Now all you could see was a mixture of gray, red, orange, and yellow; all together in an enormous hole in front of you.

"This is The Chasm." Your father said, panting heavily from all the running. "We just need to cross this and we'll be—"

"HALT!"

His words were interrupted by a polearm descending from the skies and impacting in front of you. He stood in front of you, shielding your small form from the wind and rocks that were sent flying from the impact. When you raised your eyes, a brown figure stood in place. He was gripping the weapon tightly and observed you both with anger in his golden eyes.

The figure took one step forward. "You were there... I remember you at the execution." He spoke. Your father took one step backward. "And I remember that you were the last person Their Grace laid their eyes upon."

The new man started to walk towards you, startling your dad who tried to cover you from the stranger's eyes. It seemed to have the contrary effect, as he now was looking right at you.

"Don't make my job harder. Hand over the child." He extended his arm, giving you an opportunity to remain on his good side.

"Please, we're just a merchant with his child... We have no relation to Their Divine Grace!" He lied.

The stranger dropped his hand and raised his polearm.

"If that's so, then pray tell why you claim yourself a merchant yet you have nothing on you but personal belongings. No merchant goes through The Chasm while running with a child."

The gound below you started to vibrate.

"If you have nothing to hide, you'll have no problem with me taking a look at your child." The man started to approach again, and your father took his two daggers off his sleeves and stood on guard. "So that's how it's going to be..."

The earth almost split itself from the impact.

The strong wind produced from the clash of polearm and daggers was enough to send you flying some meters away. You landed on a convenient and small patch of grass that helped cushion your fall. It was always like this, your parent always told you that both you and them were loved by this world and nature would always find a way to help you.

You quickly stood up, watching how your father was trying with all his might not to get stabbed or wounded by the edge of the weapon. His daggers could only block or deflect the thrust, he was at a clear disadvantage as he could not get closer to his opponent. Not even his electro vision seemed to help much, there wasn't a lot of fighting he could do without accidentally hurting you.

"Hah!" The stranger managed to knock off the daggers off him and wasted no time in raising his weapon ready to strike.

Desperation filled you. These people already took you tata, they can't take papa too!

"No!!"

The attack didn't impact the male's body, as it was suddenly pushed aside. You had thrown yourself against your father safely putting him out of harm's way. He had the wind knocked out of him, and it took him a couple of seconds to fully return to the fight. The first thing he saw was the shocked face of his attacker, amber eyes fixated on the little figure on top of himself. He followed his gaze and felt the blood drain from his face as he watched his child hug him, bearing a light cut on their arm that was barely bleeding. The red, however, rapidly became gold upon exiting the wound.

"It is you... The child of our Divine One!" The stranger exclaimed, making his polearm disappear. "You don't have to be afraid little one, I'm not going to hurt—"

Your father encircled your body with his arms, gently pushing you off him and lowering you at his side so he was still between you and him.

"DON'T COME CLOSER!" He threatened the man. The fury in his voice even surprised you- you had never seen your papa get this angry... "I saw what you did back there! You are all monsters! I don't trust any of you, not even an archon like you!"

Was that really true? Was the man in front of you an archon, a deity? But he looked pretty human to you. In fact, he was no different from any other person you've seen in Liyue.

The brown figure seemed to be irritated at his words for he furrowed his brows. "My job is to retrieve the Divine Child unharmed; should you interfere, I will be sure to show no mercy. I do not care what relationship you have to Their Grace or their child."

As if to prove his point, the earth beneath rumbled once again. Your father gritted his teeth, mind working as fast as it could to find some solution, an exit to this predicament...

"Stardust, please hear my words." He whispered to you in a hurry. "If I'm unable to get out of here I need you to keep moving. Sumeru is just across this hole... Do you understand?" You shake your head in panic. "Please my baby, I need you to be safe. Lord Sangemah Bay is waiting for us there... can you remember that name? Lord Sangemah Bay."

Tears started to flow from your eyes, still shaking your head as if saying no. You were scared, what your papa was saying sounded almost like he was ready to stay here so you could run away.

"Don't leave me papa!" You cried as you held onto him tighter, only for him to abruptly throw you a couple of meters away and immediately plunge his dagger in the ground, making use of his vision to summon a powerful lighting and make it strike the ground between him and the archon.

The impact made you all three temporarily go blind. The ground shook violently, making you stumble and unable to stand up. The two men were in the radius of the attack, and when the earth started to crumble it was too late to get out. A giant hole formed where they once stood, and the only thing you could see through your half-blinded eyes was the figure of your father and the archon falling down, deep into The Chasm.

"NOOO!!" You tried to run to the hole desperate to get to your dad, only for roots to raise from the ground and block your path. They would not let you get closer, and even a strong wind was pushing you in the opposite direction. Just like nature always helped your tata and you, this time it was making sure you followed the route to safety.

The roots below you started getting wet from your tears. You gripped them with force, trying to bend or break them, only to find out that your childish strength could not even move them slightly. You cried against them, your heart weeping for the sudden loss of both your parents.

Why? Why did this have to happen? You were a little but happy family of three, living deep into the woods and not bothering anyone. You didn't even understand why there were people looking for your tata! They were the most amazing parent ever! Always there to cook you your favorite food and play all the games you loved and learned thanks to your trips to Liyue city. Both them and your father had already tried to explain as best as they could to a child the reason why your parent never left the cabin, and you could only get sad that you would never experience with your parent all the thing you did with your father.

"Papa... tata..." Your little heart was mourning for the life that was taken from you in a spawn of only a few hours. They took your parent, and now your dad sacrificed himself so they would not take you too. "Papa... please come back. Papa, papa, please... I need you to come back... Don't die, papa..."

Your pleads were answered only by the strong wind. It once more tried to shove you away from the scene, the roots growing more to prove the point. It pained you to leave your father here, but he told you to keep moving... Sumeru was really close and this Lord Sangemah Bay may be the only person who could help you now.

You turned to face the road ahead and saw how little white flowers blossomed one after another in a straight line in front of you, as if they were showing you the way. You took one step forward only to have your foot clash with a sturdy object. Lowering your gaze, you found yourself staring at the reimaining dagger your father used laying forgotten on the floor. You chocked on a ugly sob.

There was no time to lose. You gently picked up the little weapon and stored it in your backpack before running through the flower path. No monsters nor animals appeared in your way, they seemed to notice your desperation and made sure to stay away from the path.

The gray and gradient red started to slowly become a deep and vibrant green once more. The air was starting to feel more humid, too. The large trees soon appeared in your vision, and the artificial flower path merged with an already existent dirt road.

You finally did it. You were in Sumeru now.

on soul of sovereignty, ysmé the exalted, and gender presentation.

so! soulsov. soulsov and gender identity.

on my second playthrough (a livestream with friends), somebody pointed out that ysmé scanned to her as trans woman. i asked why, and we ended up in a conversation that lasted long into the night and notes for an analysis post i'd make at some inchoate point in the future.

that inchoate point is today!!

below the cut are some explorations into ysmé's character, her past, and potential intersections with gender identity. spoilers for the prelude ensue. if you're planning to play the game yourself in any capacity, i gently urge you to do that now before reading further. :)

I. YSMÉ, PRESENTATION, AND SPECTACLE

Ysmé is a practiced mage whose highly idiosyncratic use of artisanry (constructive magic) as a body mod is vital to how she chooses express herself as a person. She's out to become God and/or die trying.

We get introduced and reintroduced to Ysmé a whopping seven times throughout the prelude alone. In order, we are presented with her:

as a thief, stealing from a church,

as a sickly damsel, at the Lamplight,

as a treasure-hunter, when her guise starts to falter,

as a crazed mage, when she holds Loïc at gunpoint,

as a spooky ghost, when she is stabbed,

as a goddess, when she ascends,

and, finally, as a tired and scarred woman in the epilogue.

In many of these circumstances, how she appears to others is something she gets to dictate. Most notably, this factors into her choice to take the guise of a frail, sickly maiden` to better court the goodwill of Loïc (who she's already designated as a mark for this kind of act)

and when she later reveals her "true self" in the middle of the Hollow Temple to awe and frighten him. Here, she's in her full clowngirl glory! You can tell that she's spent time poring over every little flourish of this outfit, down to her nails matching the color of her facepaint. It's tacky, it's maximalist, it's sensual, it's a little unsettling, and boy is it everything. This is Ysmé qua Ysmé, and she makes sure you know it with the impact this one scene makes.

Even when we see her put together a look as a literal goddess, we get so much ostentatiousness that points exactly to what kind of person she wants to be seen as!

Two faces, one beneath the other, victory beneath a pulled-aside mask of tears. Fuller lips, fuller lashes behind a mask of smudged makeup. Eyes on her tatas because who the hell is there to tell her not to. She gets scene after scene where we get to see that she curates every single aspect of her appearance, and as someone who takes on many of the signifiers of a stage performer, she cares deeply about the kind of mask she chooses to wear.

Nothing here is accidental. Everything about how she genders herself is purposeful!

II. GHOST YSMÉ... (HEAVY SIGH) AND ALSO LANGLAIS'S ACCOUNT

The first time we see a version of Ysmé who isn't carefully curating her presentation using glamours, it's when she is quite literally dead. Along with wild hair and a body made of ghostly flames, she has a broader, straighter build than she had in any of her past guises (plus a gaping stab wound.)

It's our first hint that Ysmé's use of "glamour" goes beyond just a change of outfit and hairstyle. For friends more observant than I was on my first playthrough, this was the first "wait hold on is this an art style thing or is Ysmé being telegraphed as transgender, here?" moment.

There's one other named character appearing in the prelude who already has his own idea of who Ysmé is prior to the plot, and that's Langlais-- a police officer pursuing Ysmé at the behest of the Church of the Builder.

He quickly demonstrates himself to be pretty repugnant.

Regarding Ysmé's skill with artisanry, he remarks:

From context clues laid out in the wider text, "artisanry" is a magic based around weaving physical matter out of nothing. It is used in construction, art, and the production of goods, generally at a slow, measured pace, making one object at a time. Constructs made with artisanry are meant to be durable. It seems to be the main form of magic taught within the Mosaic, and its creation-based theming seems appropriate to the Builder writ large.

Ysmé's favored use of it (weaving entire new outfits and tools out of thin air, trading durability for speed and flexibility) is considered non-standard and low-brow-- "illusions" that are deceitful or childish in nature. Loïc has been mislead, he warns.

Langlais feels justified in treating Ysmé like some backyard nuisance that needs reining in and Loïc like a wuss for flinching at the sight of a gun, despite him having taken a demonstrably very real bullet from Ysmé's demonstrably very real (if spontaneously generated) handgun just the day before. It all clashes from what we've seen and the inferences we're meant to draw about how Ysmé uses magic--

however temporary, however breakable, Ysmé's "illusions" are to be taken seriously. I think that the way in which she chooses to modify herself should be included here, along with the possibility that that's not exactly an intended use case for artisanry.

In addition, when initially interrogating Loïc, he refers to Ysmé like this

implying that he believes that "Ysmé" is some sort of fake name or alias.

III. BOYMODER YSMÉ

The scene after Ysmé comes down off of her holy high and wakes up ass-naked in god-knows-where, having been assigned to do god-knows-what by the Voice of the Sovereignty, holds a lot of interesting implications for Ysmé in particular.

We get this remark from her internal narration:

Okay, so this is generally the first thing she does when she wakes up. Before doing anything else with her day, she uses artisanry to change her appearance. There are plenty of reasons why this could be the case (vanity, status as a wanted criminal, etc.), but the emphasis on it in this scene makes me believe the text is indicating that Ysmé might suffer from dysphoria and/or dysmorphia.

We get a good look at her in the very next CG, along with the one after, showing us an Ysmé with a different appearance than any of the guises we've seen before...

Ysmé, without any glamours or illusions being sustained, is an androgynous figure, akin to her ghost form. Still quite pale, still a skinny little thing, but the entire cut of her face and all of her body proportions are pretty different than, say,

any of this, in scenes where she's in full control of how she gets to look using magic.

Frankly, she looks like "mysterious elven prince" material, and it contrasts quite a bit with how she presents herself in the temple especially.

For now, I'm not going to go into any supplemental materials like the sketches and paintings featured on GG's blog, but they play with Ysmé's presentation on the regular there as well.

The conclusion I feel like I'm supposed to draw from all of this is that Ysmé is a transgender woman who uses her unique skill for artisanry to change her appearance to whatever she feels suits her. She is not necessarily comfortable being seen or seeing herself without a glamour on, but in this scene she is too spent to do anything about it.

IV. HAHA HEY GG WHERE ARE YOU GOING WITH THIS

BUT, that is not where the game ends. The prelude leaves us on a stinger.

A lone figure stands over an altar, praying to the Builder that His lost children, swayed by the Devil, may yet find their way.

The camera then pans over a figure that looks nearly identical to the Ysmé we saw a scene ago (albeit without any scars), right down to the soul-stealing blue eyes, fancy hair part, and really good clavicles. They open their eyes in response to the prayer.

So far, we've got very little context for this. It appears to take place in the same church as the opening scene where Ysmé is caught stealing, but we don't know who this person or the figure in the church is, and we don't even know if this is happening concurrently to the prior scene or if this is a flashback.

It's still of interest, I think. Something that didn't catch my eye the first time around and that I still didn't quite process until I saw the isolated CG on GG's blog:

Hey, check out that carved idol (presumably of the Builder himself?) right in the center of the goddamned church-- a familiar cut of the jaw, and a familiar hair part. Ysmé doesn't just look the part of a prince, she quite literally looks like an incarnation of the Mosaic's creator deity, who is exclusively referred to using masculine terms.

If the person in the end CG isn't Ysmé, then who is it? Why do Ysmé and this person both heavily resemble the Builder?

I could draw all sorts of conclusions about this from the text as written so far, but the one that feels most relevant here is this: if Ysmé is indeed "meant" to look like the Builder, if she was made to serve a very distinct purpose, if she was at some point meant to serve as a living vessel for His will,

wouldn't that put any decision by her to trans her gender in a very narratively relevant light?

Wouldn't that put her decision to leave the Mosaic and seek the Sovereignty in a very different light?

Wouldn't that mean that the story that she told Loïc on the way to the Hollow Temple (fleeing a religious family to serve a higher purpose-- even if it's just for herself) was technically true, after all?

If nothing else, it would put into perspective why a Church lapdog such as Langlais has been ordered to pursue her, along with a fully mobilized police unit in tow.

This pretty quickly takes a flying leap into the realm of speculation on my part, but I'm sure there's some connection between all of these similar elements and I'm interested in how it plays into Ysmé's character.

V. LOÏC, AND CONCLUSIONS

Let's jump back to that scene of Loïc and Ysmé waking up together.

None of this seems to come as much of a surprise to Loïc, who gives her the cloak off his back for modesty and regards her kindly despite the kind of day she has just put them both through. There's never any demand from him for her "real" name, no demand that she explain herself further, and certainly no shock about her appearance.

I'm inclined to agree with Loïc's read of the situation, here.

Ysmé is demonstrably a pretty poor liar. The dying ingenue act doesn't have much in the way of substance to it-- certainly not enough to buoy her through several conversations and a mutant wolf encounter with Loïc on the way to the Hollow Temple-- but the speech she gave in the forest about wanting something better for herself, a second chance away from a controlling family

struck a chord with Loïc. Despite it having been woven into her ongoing wicker basket of lies, there's a glimmer of something true, there. Ysmé wants the capital-S Sovereignty-- and lowercase-s sovereignty over her future and what she gets to make of herself.

Judging from her seeming unfamiliarity with the outside world, it might not be something she's ever had before.

None of her presentations by themselves comprise a complete snapshot of who Ysmé is as a person. However, they are different parts of the elephant, so to speak-- there is flicker of truth in each of them. After seeing several, Loïc decided that the fuller picture they form isn't one of the kind of person who would doom humanity.

He doesn't truly know her, yet, no. However, I think he has decided what he has seen of her paints a picture of a lonely, long-suffering, malcontented queer lady who, indeed, as mentioned by the pastor (?) figure in the first CG...

... has a heart. More alike to his own than different, even. In every form she's taken, she's revealed a little more about who she is and who she would like to be seen as. (For the record, I also feel like there are a few parts of the text that imply Loïc is his own flavor of trans and/or queer, but that's a much bigger leap and would deserve its own post)

I'm not sure how much all of these inferences will be backed in the final release. In Loïc's words,

As much as I love Roos, I can't get over how protective Jav is if Jake. Like!!! He gets all serious when the jokes takes a serious turns, and holds back Roos before he cam jump at him.

So--! Married. Jake's dads know, so does javys mom and sister. Hell, they secretly had bets on who would make the first move and everything, javy is basically family since forever. But the daggers don't know (and okay, they both are very good at keeping secrets, Jake kept his whole family a secret ever since flight school!), they find out when one of them is hurt and the other just panics because fuck. Fuck close call how am I supposed to react there?? Sir? Mr compacflt how do you react to your admiral husband getting hurt Sir??? (Yeah, well, whoever of them it is, the answer never changes, and Tom never reacts well).

Could be random training/mission, could be the dagger training before bird strike, could be after Jake takes off as dagger spare but shit goes wrong...could be anything, but the daggers thought those two were just friends, close friends, and messing up with them about having a house together, and plans, and the rings too...

AHAHAHAAAAA MY TIME TO BE EVIL.

I live for Jake x Javy. I desperately need more of it. It’s like I’m 8 again and sticking two ken dolls together to kiss. I love this.

When Jake slammed out of his plane they all could only watch. Javy can’t believe he just had to watch Jake eject. He’s never seen Jake eject before.

Fuck.

“Mav what’s happening! Why did Jake just go out???”

“His plane wasn’t responding to any controls Coyote. He ejected. Everyone come back now. No arguments.”

Javy scans the sky for the med helicopter. “Mav where is med.” “still coming Coyote. Return back to base.”

Javy can’t leave him out there. What kind of husband would that make him. Oh fuck Jake’s dads. They’re on base today. Javy is going to have to tell them their son is dead.

“JAVY!”

He snaps out of it at Tom’s voice. “Sir?” “Oh thank god Javy. It’s fine. Jake will be fine. Come back down. You hear me son?”

Javy opens his mouth and closes it. “Sir…?” Tom sighs. “Kid your husband and my son will be fine. He’s resilient. Bounced back as much as Ron does. Come home.” Javy obeys, he trusts Tom with anything. If he says Jake is fine then he’ll be fine.

When Javy lands he falls out of the cockpit. Somehow Ron is there to catch him. He takes him all the way to the ground with his weight. “Jake?” Ron nods. “Hospital. He’s fine though.”

The daggers are all standing on the side watching this unfold. Tom makes his way over. “Hey kiddo? Ready to go see him?”

Javy shakes out another sob. He can’t help it. He can’t lose Jake.

They slowly make their way up to the med bay.

There’s Jake. His incredible husband Jake.

“Javy!” Javy blinks. Apparently Jake is awake. That’s a good sign. He’s got blood in his blond hair but otherwise a soft cast on his wrist looks to be the worst.

“Broke my nose again tata! That might get me close to beating Papa’s record!”

Tom laughs and sits next to the bed after shoving Javy into the other chair, “baby not something to be proud of.” Jake grins. “So you called me husband across the entire radio huh? Is that why my phone is blowing up?”

Javy blinks. Whoops. He rubs the back of his neck and doesn’t look Jake in the eyes. “Yeah. Sorry.”

Jake laughs. “Baby I can’t wait to hold your hand while being out. But you know the daggers are going to as so many questions.”

Ron kisses Jake’s head and brushes a hand across Tom’s shoulders. “We’re going back to our room. We’ll see you in the morning okay boys?” The two younger men nod, “good. Love you both.”

Phoenix and Rooster slip into the room a few minutes later. “How’s he doing?” Javy shrugs from where he’s holding Jake. “Fine. Nothing lasting. Got lucky.”

Rooster nods. “Canwe ask you something?” Javy sighs, he knew this would be coming.

“Are you two happy like this?”

Oh fuck Javy wasn’t expecting that.

“Extremely. Never been happier. I’ve spend so much time with him already I wouldn’t know how to live without him.” Phoe nods and pats a hand on Jake’s hair. Roo claps a hand on Javy’s shoulders. “For the record I’m very happy for you both.”

“Thanks I’m happy for us as well.”

When Jake wakes up he’s warm. Javy must be in bed with him. He starts to wiggle to break free but remembers his wrist and hip are fucked up. He slowly just starts petting Javy’s hair. It’s like having a puppy right there in front of him at all times.

Jake voiced that thought once and got a spanking of a lifetime. He hasn’t said that out loud again (yet..)

They got me upset at work, so I...scribbled a bit of sad. (Cause yes, I was angry, but angry me gets really emotional and I have no control over that.) (Yes i tried not to cry writing... barely succeeded, just barely.)

Jake is 15 when he gets in a bit too much trouble. Police involved kind of trouble. The kind of trouble that could keep him off of USNA even.

Obviously they get him out of trouble, but, Ron is angry this time. It's 5 days before he and Tom are deployed again. Chris won't be able to protect him that way, he grounds Jake. Because yes, he is pissed. His kid could've jeopardized his own future, was it worth?! He thought they raised him better, he thought HE raised him better.

But Jake is 15, and he's angry at the world. And his dads are going to miss yet another birthday. Sure he understand their sacrifices, he wants to follow their footsteps after all, but he's still angry somehow. And maybe craves more of their attention, despite knowing they love him more than life itself. He's just so, so angry at papa because it was papa who grounded him.

So he just burst. He yells at him all the anger he has, he says things he never thought of even think, things he never wanted to say, hints he doesn't really think. He says them anyway and locks himself in his room.

He doesn't say bye when they leave. He waves at Tata, but that's all. No begging to get back safe, no good luck and stay safe. Just a wave.

Fuck. It breaks Ron's heart so much. His chickie said that he's not his father. He doesn't have his name, and if anything, he would take Tata's name anyway. He doesn't have his blood. Even though Ron was the only one between them who could give him blood when Jake needed it when he was a toddler. Jake said he doesn't love him that much either.

He knows he was just angry, he was crying when he yelled it.

Chris tried to talk to Jake, to have him apologize, at least before deployment. Jake knows, he can see the hurt in his Papa's eyes, but fuck, he can hold a grudge.

Yup. No good luck hug and kiss.

Ron tells Chris to give him a kiss from them every time he calls. Jake is not that angry anymore, but he's stubborn, just like them all. Especially Ron.

One time Ron doesnt call. Busy, they think, it's okay. Come on, they're navy.

But he doesn't call the following day either, or the one after. Or after. He skips 2 whole weeks and so does Tom. Chris tries not to think anything of it. He tries not to show.

Jake wakes up one night screaming at the top of his lungs, like he's in actual, physical pain, he cries, sobs. Chris runs to him so fast he almost trips over Ron's dog, a big mixed breed he found in the side of the road and who apparently only really loves ron, Tokyo. He believes his son is hurt.

Jake keeps sobbing when Chris gets to him, checks him all over, holds him tight. And calls for papa in the most desperate way. It takes almost two hours, and now a killer headache, for Jake to tell him he had a nightmare where Ron got shot down and he's found dead. All because he sent them anyway without a hug.

Chris calls Holly and wolf, he asks them for help, asks them to see why ron and tom went suddenly on radio silence for this long, see if they're okay. Jake is deadly sure they're not okay.

Ron was actually shot down. Left stranded. Took them a while to find him, he's alive though, unlike Jake's nightmare, barely but he's alive.

Broken ribs, one leg, a wrist and badly concussed. Bleeding. Cold.

Tom never called because he was searching for him and couldn't think of anything at all but to find Ron and get him home.

He's moved to a ground base hospital, Chris packs a few things, grabs Jake and flies there.

Ron's sedated when they get there, they had to take some extra scans, check that there's no bleeding in the brain. Jake freezes, he trembles, he breaks in their arms and cries. He's scared how close his own nightmare came to be real. He's terrified that they found papa when he had that nightmare, like he predicted it somehow.

He knows he's not a little kid anymore, but curls up in the bed, careful of all the injuries.

They don't know when he'll wake up, scans show nothing so it's just a waiting game now, they say he'll wake up when his body will be stronger.

Jake keeps having terrible nightmares until ron open his eyes again. (After too, just less terrible, only bad.)

Chris blinks up at him. He was so absorbed in his book he forgot they were surfing. Jake looks so much like his dads it’s adorable. “Go ahead baby. Have fun be safe. Be smart.” Jake nods. He drops down so Chris can kiss his head. “Love you dad!” “Love you too honey.”

Chris rolls over, he props himself up. He scans the waves for a second looking for his husbands. He finds them. He smiles slightly when he sees two of the women surfers floating there talking with them. Oh she must be blind if she thinks Tom is straight.

Chris grins. He can tell they’re trying to escape them. They always were too nice for their own good some days. He watches as the paddle back to shore. They both slip out of the water.

Goddamn.

Tom presses a kiss to where he just bit. “You’re right sorry.” Chris smiles at him and puts a hand in his hair. Tom leans closer like a giant cat. Ron smiles at the two of them. “You are so fucking cute.”

Chris grins at him. “That’s what the guy who I was talking to earlier said too!” Tom sits up and glances at Ron. “Someone asked you out?” Ron tilts his head, “do we needs to kill somebody?” Chris throws his hands up, he puts one on each of them. “All right cavemen no you don’t. He was very nice but about fifteen years too young and not two navy boys who fell for me.”

The two of them glance around for a second. They both shove Chris back onto the blanket. It’s late in the day. Most people are gone. They start licking and kissing his neck and cheeks. “Hey!” Tom pulls back he licks his lips, “you taste good. Let’s go home.” Ron nods. He pulls Chris up and kisses him again.

They all pack their things together. They walk back to the house. Chris catches them in a kiss when they’re walking up the board walk. “Jakey is gonna be gone for a while tonight.”

His two men grin at him. “Looks like we’ve got plans then.” Chris laughs. He pulls them into another kiss. “Alright let’s go.” Ron kisses his cheek with pinch to kiss hip. Tom follows with a kiss to his shoulder and then bite to his ear.
