Last week, while I was having dinner, I received a video from my friend on WhatsApp. I opened it, and at first, I couldn't quite make out what was happening. It seemed like some sort of street fight because everyone was just passing by. But then, I saw a guy grabbing a slab and hurling it at a girl. I was shocked. I immediately switched on the TV to catch the news, and what I saw was disheartening. The news was all about Love Jihad, with everyone talking about how a Muslim guy had trapped and killed another Hindu girl. Every politician was busy discussing how many more Kerala stories there would be. But amidst all this, no one seemed to be talking about why nobody had stepped in to save Sakshi. They were all focused on the Hindu-Muslim angle, but they failed to acknowledge that anyone could have saved that girl, yet nobody even tried. It's like they were all just passing by, treating it as some street fight.
From that first stab to the 21st, and then being crushed multiple times with that slab, no one had the courage to make an honest effort to stop Sahil. Yet, everyone is pointing fingers at the Muslim guy, blaming him for Sakshi's death. But the truth is, we are all responsible. We could have saved that girl. The video made me cry, and it ignited so much anger within me. How could those people just stand by and let Sahil brutally attack Sakshi right in front of them?
In interviews, people are saying they are scared of the police and the legal system. They fear harassment if they step forward to help. But why should we be scared? The police are meant to protect us. Instead of turning it into a Hindu-Muslim issue, the influential people should focus on building trust within the community. They should reassure people that they won't get into trouble for lending a helping hand. We need to create a society that reacts and prevents such tragedies. It's time for a change. Today it was Sakshi, but tomorrow it could be you or someone else. Instead of just marching with candles and holding banners, we all need to come forward and build a society where we can help victims without fear or hesitation.
