A Jason Todd Love Story

Last chapter’s summary: Grace, a beautiful young woman, and her abusive father attend a gala hosted by Bruce Wayne himself. What is to happen, and who Grace is to meet, are still a mystery.

A waiter glides past me extravagantly, a silver tray of flutes in his hand. With my previous thought in mind (”I need a fucking drink.”), I snag one of the glasses from a different waiter passing. Champagne seems to swirl in the flute, the bubbles floating towards the top. As I scan the room, my eyes fall on my father at the bar, downing his - what I'm guessing - alcoholic beverage, like it is his business.

With a heavy sigh, I stalk over to one of the tall tables and place the elegant flute down. No alcohol for me, cause it looks like I'll be driving tonight. I hate being the responsible one.

"Not your scene?" A voice speaks up behind me. I gasp softly out of shock and whip around. Oh damn. The young man chuckles softly. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." The stranger is attractive, very attractive at that. Wide shoulders, strong jawline, black hair (except a couple strands of white), boyish charm and smirk - the whole nine yards. But probably my favorite? His electrifying, bright, green eyes. Double damn. He is sporting a very classic, yet fine tuxedo with a long, red tie; his jacket is open in a casual manner. "Well?"

I blush at the realization that I've been staring. A small smirk stretches upon his lips at my staring, as well. "O-Oh, um," I stutter softly, glancing down for a moment. "No, not particularly."

"Yeah, me neither," he sighs softly and takes a step closer to me, stuffing his hands in his pants pockets. We are now about a foot apart. That boyish charm I was talking about? Yeah, it's basically oozing from him right now. And it's hot as hell. "I don't know, but all these people in one room make me anxious as hell."

"Yeah, you can definitely say that again." My fingers tug and play at the fabric of my black clutch, as I work up the courage to do...something…alright, here we go. I place my clutch on the table, then look up at him, my brown baby hairs wisping about at the motion of my head. With a kind smile, I hold out my hand for him to shake. "My name's Grace."

He takes my hand in his, but instead of shaking it, brings it up to his lips and kisses my knuckles. His small, alluring smirk returns, making my heart lurch. "Todd," he says, gazing up at me through his lashes with those damned eyes. "It is very lovely to meet you, Grace."

Hot and sweet? You certainly don't come across that every day. "It is very lovely to meet you too, Todd." He winks, his charismatic smile only growing. Todd squeezes my hand before standing up straight, and drumming up a conversation. Well, it was mostly Todd, flirting and cracking jokes and me, giggling like a little school girl. "So do you have any siblings, Todd?" I question, leaning my elbow on the table. His black hair bounces as he nods.

"I do, yes. One older, two younger. All brothers."

I giggle softly and shake my head, resting my chin on my knuckles. "Oh my gosh, your poor mother."

"Oh...um, no mother. Just adoptive father." His once electric eyes are have now dimmed; they are clouded with a combination of a dark past and bittersweet memories, more of the darkness than not. God, that was so rude of me, assuming he had a picture-perfect family.

The strings and piano in the corner finish a piece, then begin again after a few moments of rest. This one's a bit more upbeat than the last selection played. I lick my dry lips and stand upright, taking a small step towards him. I place my hand on his bicep; it flexes under my touch. My eyes hold sympathy and understanding. "T-Todd, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean t-to bring up anything."

"It's alright babe, don't sweat it." Todd's smirk and charm return just like that. Another ten or fifteen minutes pass of us two making conversation. He is incredibly sweet and charming and funny and handsome and just...I just can't believe he's talking with me of all people, ya know?

Focusing back in, I laugh at Todd's story. "...so Damian put salt in his coffee!" He laughs as well, shaking his head a bit. "Thing is, our dad knew! But he drank it! All of it!" I laugh a bit harder, bending over slightly at the waist.

"He drank a whole mug of coffee with salt?! Oh my gosh, that is so badass and petty and I fucking love it!" Todd laughs at my exclamation and nods. I notice some of the guests look our way, annoyed and unimpressed expressions at how rowdy we are being. But I could honestly care less. I'm having so much fun, so much more than I thought I would.

"He said, and I quote, 'I didn't want-'" He cuts his sentence short, for some reason. My eyebrows furrow slightly when he looks somewhere behind me, his eyes widening a bit. Before I can turn around and ask, he makes eye contact and suddenly questions, "Do you want to dance?" I'm almost taken aback from how electric his emerald eyes are.

"Um, ye-"

Todd grabs my hand and practically drags me out to the dance floor. When we've immersed ourselves in the crowd, Todd places his left hand on my waist. I place my own hands in their rightful spots. My cheeks flush slightly when Todd presses me flush against his chest.

The piano begins a new tune, one I actually recognize. "Sorry about that, babe," he says softly, starting to sway side to side. When I look up, Todd flashes me an apologetic smile. "I just...don't want to see a specific person. And I don't want them to see me."

"Crazy ex?" I joke. Todd laughs, which makes me smile. His laugh is absolutely lovely, if I must admit.

"No, actually. My dad."

"The strict one that made you come here?" He nods a bit. I rest my chin on his shoulder, giggling softly. "The one that drank a salty mug of coffee?" He nods again, except laughs this time, bending his head down in my neck to muffle it.

"That's the one," he chuckles, when he has calmed down a bit. His smile still tickles the skin of my neck and shoulder. The skirt of my dress 'swooshes' around my ankles as my dance partner leads me.

Damn, he's good at this. How many of these things has he attend?

My eyes glance past Todd's shoulder to see my own father scanning the room. His expression holds drunken confusion and anger. Oh shit, he's looking for me, isn't he? "Tell you what," I speak up, focusing back on him. Todd's beautiful green eyes shine for a bit. "I'll help you hide from your father, if you help me hide from mine."

"Deal," Todd chuckles softly, leaning down and pressing a soft kiss to my forehead.
