As Paris in “Romeo and Juliet: Love is a Fire” at the Santa Monica Playhouse, Gavin Mulcahy had to weep over Juliet’s corpse. To do so, he went to a different place. “I take several minutes of solitude before entering and I bury my face in my arms, simulate unsteady breathing, and embrace despair,” he says. While he has typically relied on his character’s “dramatic stakes,” for this show, he has drawn on personal triggers to find those emotions. “It’s more effective, but also more taxing.”

BOOTLEGS 2023

The year is winding down, so it's time to look back at the last 12 month's crop of live tapes. Crowd noise, tape hiss, distortion, murk ... and plenty of magic, people! As I do this year after year, I ask myself: "Why do I do this year after year?" I guess it's a habit I can't break. But I do love something about these cloudy recordings — the immediacy, the imperfections, the possibilities. Each bootleg, no matter how lo-fi, contains a glimmer of hope, a potential for beauty and transcendence. The fact that not all of them (few of them, in fact!) really deliver on that promise is part of the deal. The search continues!

Louis Cameron Gossett Jr. (May 27, 1936 – March 29, 2024) was an American actor. Born in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City, he made his stage debut at the age of 17.[2] Shortly thereafter, he successfully auditioned for the Broadway play Take a Giant Step. Gossett continued acting onstage in critically acclaimed plays including A Raisin in the Sun (1959), The Blacks (1961), Tambourines to Glory (1963), and The Zulu and the Zayda (1965). In 1977, Gossett appeared in the popular miniseries Roots, for which he won Outstanding Lead Actor for a Single Appearance in a Drama or Comedy Series at the Emmy Awards.

Gossett continued acting in high-profile films, television, plays, and video games. In 1982, for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and became the first black actor to win in this category. At the Emmy Awards, Gossett continued to receive recognition, with nominations for The Sentry Collection Presents Ben Vereen: His Roots (1978), Palmerstown, U.S.A. Their son Satie was born in 1974. Gossett and Mangosing divorced in 1975. His third marriage, to Star Search champion Cyndi James-Reese, took place on December 25, 1987. They adopted a son, Sharron (born 1977). Gossett and James-Reese divorced in 1992.[117] Louis was the first cousin of actor Robert Gossett who starred on TNT's The Closer.

In 2022, Gossett was cast in a supporting role for the upcoming American horror film, Awaken the Reaper.[116] The film also features performances by Lance Henriksen and Robin Curtis. Awaken the Reaper is directed by Justin Paul and Dave Campfield. The film is produced by Fourth Horizon Cinema, Impact Media Studios and Design Weapons. In 2023, he portrayed Ol' Mister in the 2023 remake of The Color Purple. The role was originally portrayed by Adolph Caesar in the Steven Spielberg-directed critically acclaimed 1985 film.

Gossett stated that in 1966 he was handcuffed to a tree for three hours by the police in Beverly Hills.

Gossett struggled with a debilitating illness during the 1990s and early 2000s, having been given a prognosis of six months to live from a doctor at one stage. In 2001, he learned much of his illness was due to toxic mold in his Malibu home. On February 9, 2010, Gossett announced that he had prostate cancer. He added the disease was caught in its early stages, and he expected to make a full recovery. In late December 2020, Gossett was hospitalized in Georgia with COVID-19.

BETTY GRABLE

December 18, 1916

Elizabeth Ruth Grable was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the youngest of three children. Nicknamed ‘Betty’ as a child, she was pressured by her mother to become a performer. She was entered in multiple beauty contests, many of which she won or for which she achieved considerable attention.

A 12-year-old Grable and her mother traveled to Hollywood in 1929, hoping to achieve stardom.  To get her daughter jobs, Lillian Grable lied about her daughter's age, claiming she was 15. That same year, she made her uncredited film debut as a chorus girl in the all-star revue Happy Days (1929).

In 1930, at age 13, Grable (under the pseudonym Frances Dean) became one of the original Goldwyn Girls, along with Ann Sothern, Lucille Ball and Paulette Goddard. Grable appeared with Lucille Ball in the short A Night at the Biltmore Bowl (1935), Old Man Rhythm (1935), and Follow the Fleet (1936). 

In late 1939, Betty Grable dated Desi Arnaz when the two were concurrently appearing on Broadway; him in Too Many Girls and her in Du Barry Was a Lady.  Coincidentally, Lucille Ball did the 1943 film of Du Barry, taking the lead from Ethel Merman. Grable’s role was re-written and she was not part of the film. 

Throughout her career, Grable was a celebrated sex symbol. Her bathing suit poster made her the number-one pin-up girl of World War II. Grable's legs were insured by her studio for $1 million as a publicity stunt.

On an October 1948 episode of Lucille Ball’s radio series “My Favorite Husband” Liz Cugat (Lucy) wonders aloud: “What’s Betty Grable got that I haven’t got?” 

Although she began doing television in 1953 on variety and talk programs, her first scripted program was an episode of “Star Stage” titled “Cleopatra Collins”. Grable played an ex-Miss America. She quickly followed-up by playing Lily Garland in “Twentieth Century” for “Ford Star Jubilee”, an adaptation of the 1932 play about movie stars on a train.  

On a November 15, 1954 episode of “I Love Lucy,” Betty Grable’s name is mentioned by Lucy Ricardo as one of the many Hollywood stars she is looking forward to meeting should Ricky get the role of Don Juan.  

Once in Hollywood, Lucy gets to see Betty Grable’s Beverly Hills home in “The Tour” (ILL S4;E30) in May 1955. The driver (Benny Rubin) describes the home as a ‘ranch style’. 

A few months later, just before returning home from Hollywood, Lucy and Ethel visit the forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and see Betty Grable’s leg imprint in a slab of cement.   

ETHEL: “What are you doing?” LUCY: “Comparing my leg to Betty Grable’s.” ETHEL: “Oh, it looks identical.” LUCY: “Oh, to you and me maybe, but I doubt it would fool Harry James.”

On February 15, 1943, Grable did indeed leave her leg print and signature in wet cement for the forecourt. 

Her final scripted role on TV was playing herself in “Lucy Wins A Racehorse”, an installment of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” on “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse”. It was filmed in December 1957 and aired on February 3, 1958. 

The episode’s theme grew from the James’ and Arnaz’s shared love of horses and horse-racing. 

In it, Grable appears with her second husband, bandleader Harry James, who she married in 1943 and with whom she had two children. The couple divorced in 1965.  She had first married actor Jackie Coogan, but their relationship lasted only a three years (1937-1940). 

Grable and James do a full out musical performance in the Ricardo living room titled “The Bayamo” in which Grable shows off her legendary legs and James plays his iconic trumpet.

In the 1969 Dinah Shore TV special “Like Hep!” Betty Grable’s name is dropped in the title song sung by Dinah, Lucy, and Diana Ross.  That’s hep!  

Grable’s name was also mentioned in the February 1971 “Here’s Lucy” episode “Lucy and Carol Burnett aka The Hollywood Unemployment Follies” (TLS S3;E22). During the episode they ogle a wardrobe rack conspicuously labeled COSTUMES WORN BY BETTY GRABLE AND ALICE FAYE. Faye and Grable did two films together, Tin Pan Alley (1940) and Four Jills in a Jeep (1944).

In a November 1971 episode of “Here’s Lucy” Dan Dailey dictates a letter to Betty James and Lucy Carter correctly guesses that he is writing to Betty Grable, who did four films with Dailey.  

Betty Grable died at age 56 of lung cancer on July 2, 1973 in Santa Monica, California.

Mysterious Death of Scott Ruffalo

Mark Ruffalo was brought into the world in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Marie Rose (née Hébert), a beautician and beautician and Frank Lawrence Ruffalo, who filled in as a development painter, who likewise had two little girls and another child, Mark's sisters, Tania and Nicole, and his sibling Scott. His family later moved to San Diego, California, and afterward to Los Angeles with his sibling, Scott, where Ruffalo took classes at the Stella Adler Conservatory and helped to establish the Orpheus Theater Company. 

Through the performance center organization, he composed, coordinated and featured in numerous plays and filled in as a barkeep for near 10 years.

While in their late adolescents, Mark and his sibling Scott, moved to Los Angeles, where they scratched by in a $600-a-month condo by MacArthur Park, sharing a full-size bed.

At a certain point, Mark reviewed how he and his sibling got by during those occasions while he tried out for jobs and Scott simply beginning as a stylist.

"He'd make a f–ruler monster bowl of fish pasta, and we'd eat off that throughout the week," he said. "The best of times, the most exceedingly terrible of times." — Mark on how he and his sibling got by from the beginning into their vocations.

Unforeseen Tragedy

The examination concerning his demise drove police to two "people of interest," both of whom were with Ruffalo at the hour of the shooting, Shaha Adham, 26, an affluent Saudi finance manager, and her beau, Brian B. Scofield, 29. The investigators realized Adham had been at Ruffalo's on the grounds that his home reconnaissance got her at his townhouse.

What’s up pudding cups, here’s one of those rare occasions where I’m going to actually post some writing! This is an essay about my “Favorite Athlete” (essay title) that I wrote for gym class because they were playing flag football in the grass and I couldn’t participate so she made me write an essay instead Hope you enjoy!

“What happened?” “I woke up this morning, I had yogurt for breakfast… North Korea happened, World War II happened… A lot of things have happened!” Josh Sundquist is a comedian, a motivational speaker, a best-selling author, and an American paralympian. He’s popular on Youtube, and subsequently, social media, where he posts videos of his stand ups and motivational speeches about his life, especially regarding disability and also overcoming adversity. His memoir, which has become a national bestseller, Just Don’t Fall, is described by Sundquist to be about “Childhood, Cancer, Amputation, Romantic Yearning, Truth, and Olympic Greatness” and “How I Grew Up, Conquered Illness, and Made it Down the Mountain.” In this essay, Josh Sundquist’s journey, paralympic achievements, and why he’s my favorite athlete will be discussed.

Josh Sundquist had, and beat, Ewing Sarcoma when he was 9 years old, which is how he lost his left leg. His aforementioned book, Just Don’t Fall, talks about his experience with cancer, becoming and being disabled, and joining the paralympics, among other things. Sundquist was the kind of kid that used to use an entire container of hair gel in his hair, which he remarks on in a Youtube video where he shows how he currently does his hair, and on a separate occasion on a podcast interview with Grace Helbig. He tells of how upsetting it was to lose his hair, especially considering how much it meant to him. It wasn’t all bleak, as his friends came over at some point during this time as a child, and they all shaved their heads for him in support. Reasonable time after that, his parents bought him a trampoline to learn how to balance with one leg. This seemed to work really well, along with whatever else he did throughout his life to adapt and improve on his disability. He started ski racing at age 15, and motivational speaking at 16. In 2001, he wrote for the Daily Guideposts and Guideposts Magazine. Sundquist had Just Don’t Fall published in 2010. He has also been published in The Washington Post and in what was Newsweek's college magazine, Current. Starting in July 2018, he has performed a comedy show named after one of his books, We Should Hang Out Sometime. The show is performed at Santa Monica Playhouse & Group Theatre.

Josh Sunquist mentions in a Youtube video that he wasn’t very good at ski racing when he first started. But that is rather to be expected for someone just starting out at anything. He moved to Colorado at 17 to pursue it full-time. In 2006, after training and competing for six years, he joined the United States Paralympic Ski Team and raced in the IX Paralympic Games in Turan, Italy. He competed in both slalom and giant slalom, which were alpine skiing events. Sundquist talks about his motto that especially helped him through times of frustration during skiing, “1MT 1MT”, which stands for “One More Thing, One More Time.” This meant that when he felt like he didn’t want to go on, he would try one more thing (one more time). He elaborated on this phrase and the sentiment behind it before, explaining that sometimes he wasn’t always so sure if he could go through the rest of his life. But during those times, he would ask himself if he could maybe just get through this moment.

I’m not big on athletes, or sports, or even gym class. I don’t like to watch sports, and I really don’t like to write essays about them. I was reading the list of topics I could choose from, and sighed as they all had inevitably boring topics. The first topic on the list being that I could choose to write about a favorite athlete. “I don’t watch sports,” I thought, as I scrolled past it, very sure that if I were to choose any topic it definitely wouldn’t be that one. “I don’t have a favorite athlete,” I dismissed, decidedly. Much later, a lightbulb went off. I had completely forgotten! “Josh Sundquist is, among other things, an athlete! I can write about him!” I said, but not really, for I was at the dinner table, in the middle of eating dinner. Josh Sundquist is a guy that my sister tried to show me videos of, over a year ago, maybe longer. He’s disabled and uses forearm crutches, and makes jokes about his disability and how people act about it. Aside from one video where he humorously explains how he could fly to Mexico (was it?), get a hip replacement, run with the bulls, get trampled by the bulls, get another hip replacement, and fly back to the US, all for less money than to just get his hip replaced here, this was basically my first real impression. And I was absolutely delighted. He joked about how weird people act sometimes around him, including the funny questions they ask. These questions were often similar if not the same questions people ask me. “What happened?” said some random guy on the street to him. Not hello, not even a rude-but-more-specific “Why are you disabled?”, no. Just two words. “What happened?” The same thing happened to me within the last week. I walked into a convenient store, and the lady at the cash register looked at me, and immediately went “What happened?” When it’s looked past how potentially awful that is, it is actually pretty hilarious. So was Josh Sundquists response to the audience. “I got up in the morning, I had yogurt for breakfast, North Korea happened, World War II happened. A lot of things have happened!” He ended up saying to the guy “What do you mean what happened?” Which the guy and him went back and forth on. When the lady asked me, I just blurted “Nothing. I’m disabled!” then quickly walked into an aisle before she could ask any further questions. On top of that, Josh Sundquist is incredibly fit, he can run really fast, he can even do handstands with his crutches. He has videos where he shows how to run, how to do stairs, and how to carry things with crutches. He also has videos where he reviews different types of crutches. There’s one video where he shows how you can, as a crutch-spert (a crutch expert), ice skate on crutches. Even though I use a wheelchair as well, I don’t identify extremely with it. Not to say I don’t at all, but significantly less than I do with my crutches. I never see anyone with forearm crutches. Just injured people with their underarm crutches. Seeing a disabled person with forearm crutches be so amazing, I can’t describe it. All I can say, is that representation is extremely important.

All in all, Josh Sundquist is an accomplished writer, motivational speaker, comedian, and an American paralympian. What his existence as a known disabled person, who I consider very accomplished, means to me, is indescribable.

Quando Diego Júlio — ou melhor DJ como era conhecido entre os colegas — percebeu que o dia doze de junho estava se aproximando, o rapaz, presidente da DELTA TAU SIGMA, decidiu que, mesmo estando longe de casa, iria comemorar o dia dos namorados e assim também fazer seus colegas ficarem cientes da comemoração que acontecia em sua terra natal. O brasileiro teve a ideia de promover um evento entre alguns amigos que deram os nomes para seu vice; eles fariam um sorteio de duplas e marcariam um encontro. O que melhor, afinal, para se conectar com aquele dia senão um Blind date?

Para sua surpresa, muitos colegas deram seus nomes, tornando o evento um grande sucesso no campus, falado durante a semana inteira. Isso movimentou a fraternidade e trouxe uma visibilidade melhor para os membros. Os mais ricos se mobilizaram para patrocinar o evento, pagando por reservas em restaurantes caríssimos, tendo entrada para boates reservadas e mais alucinantes de LA, sem contar as visitas agendadas nos parques temáticos.

Cada participante recebeu no celular uma mensagem com o local, tipo de roupa a se usar e a hora do encontro. Eles não tiveram a informação de quem seria seu par, para isso teriam que ir até o lugar descobrir e desfrutar de todos o encontro planejado! A única regra do evento foi: divirtam-se! O amor pode estar no ar.

MUSE: Julie Andrews (born Julia Elizabeth Wells)

Julie was born on October 1st, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, England as the result of an extramarital affair her mother, Barbara had while married to her first husband, Edward Wells. By the time Julie was 8 years old, Barbara was divorced from Edward and married to Ted Andrews. The three of them would perform in local playhouses to make money. Julie called this period in her life “very black” in her 2008 memoir Home, because they were so poor and her stepdad was a POS alcoholic and straight up creep. But Ted also eventually managed to sponsor singing lessons for Julie, where she discovered she had perfect pitch. At 13, Julie became the youngest person to ever perform in front of the royal family during a 1948 televised “Royal Variety Performance.” In 1952 she voiced the lead character in the English dub of The Singing Princess. Her impressive stage credits include ‘Aladdin’ (1950) and ‘Humpty Dumpty’ (1951) on West End, and ‘The Boy Friend’ (1954-55), ‘My Fair Lady’ (1956-59) and ‘Camelot’ (1960-62) on Broadway. On screen, she’s best remembered as the leads in the iconic live TV broadcast Cinderella (1957) and the classic Hollywood musicals The Sound of Music (1965), Mary Poppins (1964) and Victor/Victoria (1982). With all three movies, she was nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars and won for Poppins. To younger viewers, she’s also known as Mia’s grandmother in The Princess Diaries (2001).

Julie’s first husband was set & costume designer Tony Walton whom she was with from 1959 to 1967. Tony later revealed that he first fell in love with Julie while watching one of her performances of ‘Humpty Dumpty’ (aww). Apparently he was a little pretentious too and proposed with a broach rather than a traditional engagement ring (…a broach though?). In Julie’s memoir, she mentioned the first time she spotted her second husband Blake Edwards in real life was actually at a party during her honeymoon to Tony. Julie was also the main reason Tony got his first Hollywood job: a visual consultant on Mary Poppins, where as before he was working in only theatre. The two also have a daughter, Emma, born in 1962.

Around the time Julie and Tony separated, Hollywood director Blake Edwards was reportedly quoted describing Julie as “So sweet, she probably has violets between her legs.” Rather than take offense, Julie had a sense of humor and personally sent a bouquet of violets to his home. A year later Blake and Julie collaborated on the movie musical Darling Lili (1970), which was infamously a disaster production and box-office wise. But it did give us one of the most prolific celebrity couples of all time, with hit movies like The Tamarind Seed (1974), 10 (1979), SOB (1981) and Victor/Victoria. Along with a few duds, like The Man Who Loved Women (1983), That’s Life! (1986) and the short-lived sitcom “Julie” (1992). Both Lili and SOB feature sequences parodying Julie’s real struggle to shed her family friendly image and portray characters more mature. Blake was nominated for his only Oscar, Best Adapted Screenplay, for Victor/Victoria alongside Julie’s Best Actress nom. The couple adopted two Vietnamese orphans, Amy and Joanna, after volunteering for the Committee of Responsibility war relief during the Vietnam war. Julie also later revealed that she and Blake took therapy together in the 1980s when their careers were dwindling, and again in the ‘90s after Julie lost her singing voice resulted from a botched throat surgery (what a crime).

Blake died from pneumonia at age 88 in 2010 at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA with Julie and their kids by his side. Currently, Julie’s pretty much retired from performing, but still occasionally does TV and voice over work.

Remembering a quality '60s television show

Summer is drawing to a close and with it the season for road trips. America has had a love affair with cars and open roads for more than a century now. Back in the 1950s, Dinah Shore used to sing "See the USA in your Chevrolet" on her television show. And millions of Americans did. Back then, Chevrolet was the most popular car in the country. They could be seen everywhere on the roads of America. That explains why when writer Stirling Silliphant created Route 66, the first television show that glorified road trips, the lead characters hit the road in a Chevy Corvette.

Route 66, which aired from 1960 to 1964, was unique in that it was shot on location every week in a different place. The lead characters were Martin Milner as Tod Stiles, a privileged young man who just graduated from an Ivy League college, and George Maharis as Buz Murdock, an orphan who grew up in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York and worked for Stiles's father's shipping company. When the older Mr. Stiles dies unexpectedly, Tod finds that the business is bankrupt, and the only thing his father has left him is a brand new Chevy Corvette. He and Murdock then decide to take to the road in the Corvette to see the country, and find jobs and adventures along the way. Although the show is called Route 66, and has that iconic theme song by Nelson Riddle, the duo are not restricted to traveling that road. They travel all over the United States and even into Canada.

The show was remarkable in that at a time where just about every show on television was shot in a studio, the Route 66 cast and crew actually shot each episode "on the road" in 25 states by the series end. In fact, it was such an "on the road" show that Jack Kerouac tried to sue, claiming it plagiarized his famous novel. But Route 66 had nothing to do with Kerouac's novel other than the idea of two guys being "on the road."

Because Route 66 was set in a different location every week, it had a semi-anthology feel to it. Only Tod and Buz were constants in the first three seasons. (Maharis left the show in January 1963 and was replaced by Glenn Corbett a couple of months later. Corbett played Lincoln Case, a Vietnam War vet.) But there were guest stars every week playing the new characters in the new locations the Corvette pulled into each week. These included some of the greatest names in Hollywood such as Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney Jr., Buster Keaton and Joan Crawford. It also gave many young actors prominent exposure that boosted their careers. Among these were Robert Duvall, Ed Asner, James Caan, James Coburn, Barbara Eden, Peter Graves, George Kennedy, Jack Lord, William Shatner and Robert Redford. This constant parade of guest stars every week kept the show interesting. You never knew who Tod and Buz were going to meet in their travels. And that's the great fun of watching it now.

But it was not just the wonderful location shooting and top-notch guest stars that made Route 66 a hit. It was the fabulous writing of Stirling Silliphant. Amazingly, Silliphant wrote nearly every episode of Route 66. He broke into television writing for Playhouse 90, Perry Mason and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He then created Naked City, which was a police drama shot on location in New York City. After Route 66, he won an Oscar for writing the script for the hit movie In the Heat of the Night. He also went on to write the scripts for Village of the Damned, Dirty Harry and The Towering Inferno. That's one fabulous writing career.

Route 66 was a remarkable achievement in that Silliphant and his crew were able to film 30 or more episodes every year, all shot in different locations and all featuring great actors and intelligent scripts that dealt with serious issues. I recommend taking a ride with Tod and Buz sometime, just for kicks. All 116 episodes are now available for viewing for free on the Roku Channel.

He was told a woman, a neighbor, “called 911 and said a large black man was breaking into the house.” Rhames went to the house with police, which he said was right across the street, and the woman denied calling 911. He attended the New York High School of Performing Arts and found he loved acting. Soon director Brian De Palma came calling and cast Rhames alongside Tom Cruise as the computer hacker Luther Stickell in “Mission: Impossible.” Rhames was now a mainstream Hollywood movie star.
