I love having manga as palate cleansers because they're so fun. The Graham Effect would've been a 4-star had the ending been different but alas! King of Greed was so disappointing, I expected so much better but it did not give what it was supposed to give. I'm so excited for A Sign of Affection's anime coming next year though!

If you ever were to read a novella, this is the one to get your hands on!

“Same Time Next Year” follows Sumner, a hockey player on the brink of breaking into the NHL. With Sumner’s work visa about to expire, his only chance to stay in America and achieve his dream of going pro is to get a green card. Enter Britta, an ambitious waitress looking to become a part owner of the bar she works at. In exchange for the money she needs, Britta reluctantly agrees to marry Sumner, but the closer they become in preparation for their green card interview, the harder it is for them to keep their relationship solely contractual. 

Novellas can be challenging to write because they are shorter than novels, yet longer than short stories (typically being anywhere from 70 to 160 pages), but Tessa Bailey navigates the constraints beautifully. She tracks her characters’ fake marriage across the span of a year, cleverly homing in on specific moments in time that are sure to hold the attention of readers and further invest them in the development of Britta and Sumner’s relationship—like when Sumner insists on accompany Britta to a concert or when they went to their first family gathering as a “couple”.  Bailey also perfectly balances steamier scenes with more wholesome moments. 

By the time I got to the end, I wanted more, not because I was left unsatisfied (a feeling I often experience when reading novellas due to their brevity), but because I genuinely fell in love with the characters and their story.  I thoroughly enjoyed this little taste of what is to come in Bailey’s sports series and cannot wait for them to hit shelves!

As much as I want to be a wholly joyous about the fact that Henry Kissinger is finally fucking dead, as he deserves... There's a lot of me that can't help being upset with. With the fact that he lived to 100 years old. He got better medical care, better housing, and a better, more stable life for those 100 years than billions on this planet ever going to see and he did it specifically through exploitation, state sanctioned murder, and lies. He lived to 100 years comfortably on a legacy of violence that rarely threatened his personal comfort. I want to be joyous that he's finally dead, because the world IS better with him dead, but the reality is he won a long time ago.

Review: Same Time Next Year by Heidi Stephens

I've read a couple of other Heidi Stephens books and usually find them to be fun, warm-hearted romance stories. This was too and I definitely flew through the pages! Thank you so much to the lovely people at Headline for allowing me to be on the blog tour for it.

Bel and Marie are sisters but they barely know each other, as they lead such different lives. When their mother Lily dies and leaves them a house in Norfolk that they knew nothing about, the sisters are confused. Lily's will states that in order to inherit the house, they must live in it together for a whole year. But how can they possibly stand each other or the challenges that the upcoming year will throw their way?

I was really invested in this trope of two very different sisters reconnecting as adults because their mother wanted them to. It was such an interesting premise that left space for so much tension and humour. It worked in some places!

Bel is reserved and serious with some very obvious mental and emotional scars that she hasn't dealt with. Marie is sociable, bubbly and quirky, making her much more likeable. To be honest, I wanted a lot more Marie and a lot less Bel.

What follows is a series of instances where Bel really irritated me. At the beginning of the book, she has nothing but negative judgement for her sister when actually Marie just has her own, unique style. I completely get that Bel had been through some serious trauma but I didn't really see that as an excuse to be so mean to her sister, who had nothing to do with it.

She is also horrendously heterosexual, which of course is never normally a problem. However, when her sister comes out to her, she assumes that Marie was straight once and 'turned gay'. I already didn't like Bel but this comment definitely made me say 'um... that's not OK?'.

Bel also teases her love interest Nick for having a National Trust membership, which really confused me. Why is that something to tease someone about? Especially someone who travels around as much as Nick does? So weird.

Same Time Next Year does have some lovely side characters and I really enjoyed getting glimpses of each of their situation. However, the fact that Bel ended up being the main character ruined it for me because I simply didn't like her. Even when she went to therapy and worked through some of her stuff, it felt like it was too little too late. If it had been Marie at the centre of things, I really could have loved it! There is also a trope in this book that I don't like, which I can't reveal because it's a spoiler for the second half. However, if you like stories with sisters and mismatched romance and you don't mind a very spiky heroine, you might just enjoy it!

Same Time Next Year by Heidi Stephens will be published by Headline Accent on 29th February 2024.

I started this Novella in the waiting area during the girls dance classes this morning and finished by dinner time. The male lead drew me right into this story and I love a dual POV in a romance. Also, the family drama was very cute.
