the pjotv sally jackson slander is so weird to me because i feel like the change from the book counterpart actually makes a lot of sense considering the situation shes put in. in the books sally is this nurturing, generous, and self sacrificing mother. the ideal mother if u will. but thats not to say that she isnt like that in the show as well. she obviously cares about her kid, from his schooling, to his safety, to being preoccupied with his sense of identity before he realizes his place in the world. all in all, tv show sally seems to have the same priority as book sally: keep her son safe.
regardless, i agree that shes not the same as her book counterpart because it would be so stupid to claim otherwise. however the traits that were added onto tv sally provide a level of realism that the books didnt have. in her situation (a young poor single mother with a neurodivergent demigod kid that she isnt provided the resources to protect him other than sending him away), her stern somewhat “cold” attitude makes sense, her frustrations make sense, and i truly dont understand the disdain her actions have garnered.

Hello 👋 Could I please request Percy Jackson teaching his s/o (who doesn’t know how to swim and is a bit scared of water) how to swim or surf?
I’m not sure why but I totally see him as a surfer. Sorry if it’s too detailed or lacks details! (Oh and I think u said somewhere to possibly give some indications for reader personality so maybe uhm sassy bookworm indoor-lover? Not sure tbh)
Thank you an feel free to ignore obvs!

This one was so cute but I haven't written Percy like this before so hopefully it fits him <3
also how did I find such a fitting header tho-

Sea salt kisses---Percy Jackson x reader at the beach
»»————- ★ ————-««
-First of all Percy gains a fear of drowning during HoO because we all know demigods get scared of their element. This means he’s so understanding because he knows that feeling of being scared that you're completely helpless to the elements [even though he isn’t]
-So he’d definitely let you start slow, you’d go to rock pools and stick your toes in. He’d talk to the starfish and hermit crabs, bragging about you too the animals that literally don’t give a fuck. Although there was that one seagull who became heavily invested in your relationship
-You’d have picnics on the beach and collect shells, because he definitely carries them around with him. Sometimes he’ll go to grab something out of his pocket and half the beach will just fall out. Anyways, he’d go surfing and you’d lay on a beach towel reading the book Annabeth lent you until he finally dragged you into the water. Definitely somewhere calm, and you’d splash each other, standing with your knees just in the water, and he’d be so proud <3
-Can’t wait until you want to go further in, because he gets to show off
-Holds your waist as you jump over the waves, floats around and ducks under, holding his breath until you lose track of him. Then he’d creep up and tickle you under the water with that stupid grin.
-He’d take those cheesy polaroids of you wearing sunglasses, or eating blue ice cream with a dot of it on your nose that he’d definitely lick off because he isn’t going to waste good food and also he might get a kiss out of it too >>>
-You’d get comfortable enough to go in deeper water and he’d float around you just chilling, but the second your breath hitches or you think you spot something in the water he’d be right there, making jokes or poking fun at the person on the beach that forgot to put sunscreen on and are now burning to a fucking crisp until oh wait that’s Jason someone tell him-
-Boogie boarding comes before surfing, and you’d get one of those nemo themed ones because of course it’s his favorite movie and obviously he had to get it for you on your birthday
-When he goes surfing, you’d sit on the front of the board, toes tucked over the edge as he controls the waves to be a smooth ride all the way to shore, where you could get off when you wanted to and walk along the sand collecting shells to make into yet a necklace he’d wear, and tell everyone that he was given it by the best person in the world
-He can makes things dry in the water, so there's a possibility that you can lay on your very own surfboard reading the latest novel at low tide, when there isn’t a wave in sight and Percy can just admire the sun on your skin and the ripples around you
-Anyways he’d love taking you to the beach because it’s just like taking you to meet Sally, this is his element and when your in it it’s even better <3

Parents Weekend
Platonic!Percy Jackson x Reader
Tumblr media
Masterlist - Join My Taglist!
Written for my personal fic writing challenge for 2024, Sophie's Year of Fic! Featuring a new fic being posted every Friday, all year long :)
Fandom: Percy Jackson
Summary: Percy's clear-sighted mortal cousin on his mom's side flies out to California to visit Percy for his first parents weekend away from home, at New Rome University.
Word Count: 2,166
Category: Fluff
A/N: This is full of spoilers for every book that features Percy Jackson, so if you're a new fan brought in by the show, welcome! But this fic might not be for you, unless you really don't mind spoilers. Also, it is loosely related to this other platonic Percy fic I wrote, but you don't need to read one to understand the other
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"HALT! Not another step without approval!"
I jumped backwards as a talking statue appeared in front of me out of nowhere, stopping me right on the threshold of the city of New Rome. Of all the things I'd seen as a clear-sighted mortal, this ranked among the weirdest for sure.
"Who are you, and on what authority are you here?"
"Uh... I'm Percy Jackson's cousin, and I'm here to visit him at college?"
The statue narrowed his eyes at me.
"Percy Jackson's cousin, hm? I know him well. He spent quite a lot of time when he first got here disobeying and disrespecting my rules. But we killed a giant together, and he defended Rome honorably. So as long as you are not armed...?"
The statue raised an eyebrow at me, and I quickly held out my hands and shook my head to show him I didn't have anything on me. He narrowed his eyes, then nodded curtly.
"Then you may enter. Tell him hello, and to get a haircut."
"Yes sir."
The statue nodded, clearly pleased, as I walked past him and into the city of New Rome. Percy had told me all about his adventures whenever we caught up with each other, and I felt fairly confident that I'd just met Terminus, the Roman boundary god. He was even more uptight than Percy had said.
It was a beautiful fall day in California, the sun lighting up the Oakland hills and creating just the right amount of warmth. I stared around in awe at the city before me, which practically sparkled in the sun.
Percy had told me all about it, and I'd even seen a few pictures. But nothing quite compared to seeing it in person.
I joined the crowds moving through the city, laughing and talking with one another. Luckily for me, a very easy to find street sign pointed me in the direction of New Rome U, and I started heading in that direction.
Percy had just started college this fall, moving all the way across the country just when I'd finally settled for the long haul in New York. I gave him a bit of teasing for that, but I knew how happy he was to be going here (especially with Annabeth) and how hard he'd worked to get in, so I really was happy for him. I'd just made him promise to visit New York often, which I knew he would do for more family members than just me.
What I hadn't told him was that I also intended to visit him. This weekend was officially "parents' weekend" at NRU. Sally and Paul couldn't come, since Estelle was still a baby, but I had no such limitations. I'd booked a flight the second Sally had told me the date, and now, I was finally here.
Percy had no idea. As far as he knew, he had nothing special happening this weekend. I couldn't wait to see his face when I surprised him.
My head was on a swivel the minute I set foot on campus, looking for my favorite cousin. He wasn't short, so I hoped he'd be easily visible over the heads of people in the crowd, but I wandered between buildings and students with no luck. I needed a better plan.
It didn't take me long to come up with one, thankfully. A big, beautiful fountain sat in the middle of a cluster of university buildings, so I headed right for it and hopped up on the ledge, standing tall and scouting the crowds from my new vantage point. After a minute, I heard a surprised voice from behind me.
"Y/N?"
I whipped around to find Percy standing at the top of some stairs, apparently just coming from class in the building. He was hand in hand with his girlfriend Annabeth, which always made me happy to see. I beamed at him and waved like a maniac before hopping down and heading his direction.
"What are you doing here?" he called, momentarily dropping Annabeth's hand to race towards me, meeting me halfway across the square. I laughed as he picked me up in a tight hug and spun me around.
"It's parents' weekend for New Rome University, isn't it?" I asked, once my feet were back on the ground. "I might not be your parent, but I'm pretty sure the event has changed to mean 'family weekend' by this point."
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming!" he cried, laughing a little as he apparently didn't quite believe I was really here. Annabeth joined us, a smile on her face to match mine and Percy's.
"Because I wanted to surprise you, duh!" I laughed and pulled Annabeth into a tight hug, which she returned. "It's so good to see you both! Oh, and Percy, Terminus said you need to get a haircut."
Percy groaned and shook his head while Annabeth laughed.
"You met Terminus? How did you even get in here?"
"I name-dropped you for street cred with Terminus, obviously," I teased. Percy rolled his eyes, but he was still smiling. "And I might have found a way to reach out to a friend you mentioned had some power here. Frank Zhang was very nice when a total stranger appeared through a very shaky Iris message asking him to let me into his camp."
Percy and Annabeth both laughed at that, sharing a smile.
"I'll have to remember to thank Frank for the assist," said Percy.
"I actually have some of your mom's cookies with me for that exact purpose."
Percy's mouth dropped open in outrage. "And you didn't bring any for me?"
"Did I say that?"
I turned and reached into my bag, then pulled out a tupperware container of Sally's famous blue chocolate chip cookies.
"These are for you. I ate mine on the plane, and I have a batch of purple ones for Frank, since that's Camp Jupiter's colors."
"My mom is amazing," Percy breathed, the box of cookies already opened with one in his hand.
"Yeah. Yeah, she is. Now come on, I flew all the way out here from New York to hang out with you. I want to see your new school and hear about all your classes and everything else. Just tell me where we're going first."
Percy grinned. "I know the perfect spot."
My cousin didn't disappoint. Annabeth had to do a bit of work to prepare for the coming week, so after getting a promise from her to meet us later, Percy and I hiked to the top of a beautiful hill overlooking the entirety of Camp Jupiter, apparently called the Garden of Bacchus. With the sun shining and a slight breeze blowing, I quite literally couldn't have imagined anything more perfect.
"You know, I love New York. But I could stand living somewhere with more weather like this," I mused. Percy laughed.
"Yeah, it's a perk. I do miss the city sometimes though."
"Of course. But you'll be home for the break, right?"
"Yup. Annabeth's coming with me. I can't wait to see my mom, and Paul and Estelle. And we'll probably visit camp, which will be nice."
"I'm sure everyone will be excited to see you. Just don't forget to come visit your favorite cousin in fun places I can actually get to," I said, nudging him in the shoulder a little as I teased him. He grinned right back at me.
"Never."
"Good. Because otherwise I'll have to come track you down, and based on what you've told me about Camp Half-Blood, I'd have a hell of a time getting into that place."
"If any mortal could pull it off, I bet it'd be you."
I grinned, and Percy smiled. We paused for a minute, taking in the gentle breeze and bustling city below us, then I spoke up again.
"Alright, so catch me up. How's everything? Classes? Annabeth? Being on the West Coast? Any more of the Olympians trying to give you trouble?"
Percy frowned at the mention of the Olympians, which seemed incredibly fair to me.
"Thankfully no, at least for now. Otherwise, things have been good. It's still a little weird to be here, and I miss a lot of people back home, but I have a lot of friends here too. Mostly I'm just happy to finally have some normal life time with Annabeth."
"I can't think of two people who deserve it more." Percy huffed in agreement as I continued. "And one of the hardest parts of college is leaving behind people you love to go do what you need to do out in the world. But like you said, there's a lot of people you love and who love you here, too. And you know me and Sally and everyone else in New York will always leave our doors open for whenever you want to come back."
Percy gave me a small smile.
"I know. And I'll always be happy to see you visiting me here, or wherever else I might go. Especially if you keep bringing my mom's cookies with you."
I laughed. "Yeah, that makes sense. I think her cookies could open most doors for me, honestly."
"For sure."
We took a moment, smiling and laughing and breathing in the fresh air. Then finally, I sighed and stood, facing Percy with my hands on my hips.
"Alright, I've gotten the bird's eye view and I'm finally warm again after New York got that early cold snap. Now let's see what else this Roman camp has to offer."
The more we walked around, the more my jaw dropped. It looked just like the pictures I'd seen of Rome and Italy as a whole, places I'd always dreamed about visiting. Only bright, shiny, new, and right here in front of me, where I could reach out and touch it.
As we walked around and Percy gave me the full campus tour, we found more and more people who knew him, smiling and calling out hellos as we passed each other. I beamed every time, happy to see my little cousin doing so well. He'd been through hell, but he seemed at peace here. Settled, in a way I hadn't really seen him before.
"The camp itself has pegasi stables and stuff, but we'd need to get special permission to visit them," Percy explained as we walked into the plaza where I'd first found him, headed for 'the best coffee shop this side of the Mississippi'. The basic tour was completed, so we were on our way to meet Annabeth. "I can ask Frank about that, maybe. How long are you here?"
"I'm staying for the whole parents' weekend, so hopefully that means I get to see the pegasi! The day I met Blackjack might still be my best day ever."
Percy laughed as we walked through the door, a bell jingling happily over our heads. Annabeth waved to us from a table near the window, and we headed her direction.
"I think Blackjack enjoyed that day, too. He always likes to be appreciated."
"He's a flying horse. Who the hell isn't appreciating him?"
Percy just shrugged as we joined Annabeth at her table. She grinned and slid two drinks our way, one for each of us.
"Percy told me your order. Hopefully they got it right."
"I'm sure they did," I said, taking a careful sip. My jaw would've dropped, if I weren't incredibly determined not to let a single drop go to waste. "That is... actually maybe the best thing I've ever had."
"Right?" Percy grinned as he sipped his own drink.
"So, what did the two of you get up to?" asked Annabeth.
"Percy gave me the whole campus tour," I said, smiling as I leaned back in my seat, leisurely sipping my drink. The sun coming through the windows gently warmed my face, and I could've stayed right there for the rest of the day and been perfectly happy. "We hiked up to the Garden of Bacchus too, and I got a bird's eye of this whole place. I know I'll probably never get to see Camp Half-Blood to compare, but... this place is stunning."
"It really is."
Annabeth and Percy shared a smile, and he took her hand across the table. I beamed. I loved Annabeth, and I loved the two of them together. I'd never met somebody other than Annabeth who got such an immediate, unanimous family seal of approval.
"So, I got the tour of campus. I heard there are pegasi stables, which I will not be leaving without seeing. But what else is a can't-miss?"
"Don't worry," said Annabeth with a grin. "I had enough time after homework to make the perfect plan."
"Athena always has a plan," said Percy. He and Annabeth shared another smile, and I couldn't help smiling with them.
"Well good. Because I'm here all weekend, and this seems like a city I don't want to miss."

ok 1 ur desktop theme is GORG and 2 i need (if u wanna) ur thoughts about the show (or show sally in gen bc ur the only one i trust with her)
thank you!! i was actually thinking about updating it but maybe i wont 🤭🤭 and i have a lot of thoughts about the show except none only very few of them are good and i will be crucified by the 13-year-olds
im going to tell you anyway.
i will start with something i like....percy being angry. like yes give me the anger of a 12 year old who feels utterly alone in the world and doesn't understand (or does and it makes him more angry)
the fight scenes are dog shit. the only kind of cool one was in the arch but it was only cool because of percy doing the bait and switch and falling through the arch...the fights are bland boring sucky whatever other synonym you wanna use
uhhhhh sally jackson is not and would never be sitting in the rain pining of the god she told to leave....and especially not to teen pop...if she WERE going to act like a 16 year old and do the pining thing it would be to fucking like...billy joel and ricky martin and donny hathaway and stuff llike that okay...
i will preface this by saying that yes i understand that talking back to an abuser the way sally does in ep 1 doesn't make the abuse less abusive....however i DO not like the fact that that scene explicitly goes against sally characterization in the books....i am not digging my book out atm but the part where percy is like "my mother has never raised her voice or said an unkind word to anyone"....me thinks the writers all read the books 10 years ago and are going off of memory alone + or their brains are so clouded by the obsessive Big Screen Need to make women a badass girlboss slay queen i fucking hate it here
LET ANNABETH BE SILLY AND FUNNY AND CUTE AND CRY AND NOT BE AN ADULT THANK YOU....hated that they made annabeth the one to realize that it was medusa and not grover...give me back grover having to wrangle percy and annabeth into backpack leashes just to keep them on task/stop them from wandering off...book trio i miss you
i absolutely ADORE leah, walker, and aryan though the three of them are so so perfect, A+ casting no notes couldn't have done it better myself. if it weren't for the three of them i would have zero hope for the show i cannot lie...they're carrying. without them it's just..bad.
the pacing???? bad.
why did we waste half of the 4th ep on the train with echidna...stupid dumb pointless i hate it here
i do like the whole not all monsters are monsters and the gods aren't inherently good just because they're gods thing they've got going on though...very inch resting...silently hoping that they do a complete 180 and have percy side with luke and redo the series from there because that would be iconic as fuck <3 a girl can dream because at least then i could take the show at face value and not take 80 health damage every time they mess up a key part of the books...im at -29834 heath rn.
where was the time at chb before the quest??? the oh so important vital scene where luke teaches percy to sword fight???? like BRO that's soooooooooooo important to ME how could you get rid of that
not having annabeth show percy around camp
additionally, not having annabeth feed him the nectar and ambrosia, WHICH BY THE WAY they haven't even mentioned in the show yet...plot armor gone rip
not the fredrick chase sympathy while simultaniously blaming the woman...........rick when i get my hands on you...
annabeth having to EARN thalia's love??? absolutely not probably one of their biggest fuck ups fr.
the scene where sally is talking about Poseidon to percy...i do not like it sam i am. bad. not wistful enough not longing enough not sad enough not gut wrenching enough...also not completely here for sally telling percy that his dad was a god because....sallys whole thing was NOT telling him in order to keep him safe...i know they changed it in the show so sally knew he was going to camp immediately but that does not mean i have to like it
the scene with sally and percy in the pool. i hated everything about that. sally would never talk to percy like that never talk to him about money never make it seem embarassing NOT TO MENTION that percy simply wasn't scared of the water. that's stupid as fuck. theres a part in the book where percy literally says being by the water calms both him and his mom like...come the fuck on just admit you can't fucking read or at least didn't read the book.
sally annabeth get behind me so they cant hurt you anymore
i did loveeeee percy praying to sally though...absoutely insane and true of them. also the "I AM SALLY JACKSON'S SON" yesss baby you tell them about your mommy!!!!!!
them making athena moa level bad in tlt is quite interesting. setting up annabeth siding with percy pretty well.
also the whole impertinence thing over medusa's head was weird to me. when annabeth first said that i had immediately thought that annabeth's impertinence was telling percy to pray to poseidon IN ATHENA'S TEMPLE bc that made much more sense to me...but whatever
the annabeth/medusa parallel is intriguing at the very least
the underwater scene with the neraid was cool even though i hated the parallel to the pool scene w/ sally.
the dumbass pinecone fate line. 0/10 did you read the book? did you pay attention to how empathetic and reflective percy was when he found out about thalia?
honestly....i think disney was just the wrong place to go with this show because it's like what...pg? it should be pg 13 and should have more... sustenance.
this medusa was so cool though. which we could've seen a fight.
i need to know how many women are in the writer's room though...because It Does Not Look Good. funny how the characters that they're fucking up are all women....crazy. weird. totally coincidental.
are we just not going to talk about the vitality and pressure of getting the bolt back on time? where is the inherent inevitable danger, the suspense, the fear of not accomplishing a seemingly impossible talk looming over everything
this is 10000% not all of my thoughts but im not going to rewatch in order to collect them all so this is what you get xoxox

my thoughts before the PJO finale
overall? A good fun show but with some definite stumbling. Faithful in a "remake" sense, but as much as a "port" would be. Still a genuinely good time with a likeable cast, gorgeous visuals, and an engaging (mostly) interesting plot.
Beware spoilers for ep1-7!
My biggest gripes
Pacing. the first episode was horribly paced. Somehow both rushed, not well condensed, and yet also failed to effectively deliver tension in important scenes it was needed in. Scenes like the minotaur felt dragged out and lacked the urgency it deserved, and the fight/victory fell kind of flat. Pacing got better in later episodes thankfully.
Sally Jackson. Yeah I know, not a hot take. She's a more realistic depiction of a mother in that kind of situation but I didn't find her likeable outside of her first scene talking about the name Perseus. She's not necessarily a "Bad Character" per se, but she is not the Sally Jackson from the books. Frankly, I didn't find book Sally all that important, but seeing this version has definitely wised me up to importance of her kindness and patience. Sure she might have seemed like a "doormat" at the beginning, but the more u learnt about her, the more her inner strength and self sacrificial love for Percy was apparent. TV Sally just doesn't have that, it doesn't feel like she has that much affection for Percy, she seems more distant and less loving. TV Sally has far too many scenes of her raising her voice at Percy and being frustrated with him, it makes it seem more like she was randomly stuck with this child and while she loves him, she knows deep down she would have been happier without him. Again, understandable but not book Sally. I feel they've sort of played up Percy's fierce love for his mum (or maybe it just feels more so because its more present in his spoken lines), but it doesn't feel as justified. If anything, id believe a more messy wrought relationship between the two. Its not a bad thing she's not the exact same as her book counterpart, but I do think it was a bad decision when they went so hard on Percy being ride or die for her, when most of her longer scenes are her being just frustrated with Percy being a child.
Gabe. ok more of a hot take I guess but I seriously disagree with his re-characterization. I don't mean to downplay anyone's experiences with toxic or abusive partners, but Gabe is far too bland and inoffensive. At worst, he's kind of annoying and maybe lazy. But he is nothing like the human sht stain that was book Gabe. Book Gabe deserved petrification and a lot worse, TV Gabe does not. The guy deserves a break up, not murder. Me and my friend actually laughed at him, because he didn't give "beats his wife and emotionally abuses her and her child", he gave "dead beat crypto boyfriend". Maybe it was the casting as well, the actor was funny and just seemed more goofy than actively horrid. "what makes u think he hasn't hit sally?" have u met TV Sally?? are u kidding me? she would have that man arrested.
Hades. I don't actually dislike making Hades friendly and more sassy. Sure its not book accurate, but you could argue its a little more mythologically accurate (maybe). My real problem is that he lacks PRESCENCE. Yes he can be nicer ect in this, but he is still the GOD OF THE UNDERWORLD. He should still be able to command a room! His words, even if they're not malicious or intimidating, should hold a certain kind of weight. I don't blame the actor here, I think he does well with what he's given but pretty much everyone else dropped the ball here. If they had supported him, we could have had a friendly Hades that was still a fitting lord of the underworld. Writers, directors, lighting, sound, ect let him down.
Persassy. Percy was great in the beginning but I felt like he started to lose that as the show went on, to give more of his lines/sassy moments to the other members of the trio. Which wasn't a terrible idea, I just think they did it too much, especially with the Ares scenes. Percy is meant to have an epic beef with Ares so much it transcends magic amnesia, but I could not believe that with the current lack of sass. Even the upcoming battle doesn't feel as weighty or deserved as it should. Again, don't hate the idea of sharing the sass around, just don't think it should come at the cost of Percy being toned down so much.
Getting into the underworld / mattress scene WHAT WAS THAT. I can accept that Percy knows more about Greek mythology because of his mom and i feel generally from just current cultural zeitgeist, but WHY THE HELL WOULD HE KNOW WHO CRUSTY IS?? and why was it so quick? there was no quick desperate clever thinking, it was like bro had read the scene from the book and then SPEED RAN IT. Also the Charon scene was far more interesting imo and I don't like that they cut it in favour for Crusty, without even doing that scene well. God that was so poorly executed.
Anyway thanks for reading my rant. Its long so it may seem like I didn't like the series but im being truthful when I say I did. I pretty much liked the rest of it, even some of the changes. I thinks a good show and adaption with some flaws, thats all. Im excited to finish up the season and im so pumped for season 2 and hopefully the rest of the series :D

Listening to two season 5 era Nygmobblepot playlists I put together that, while very catchy and grounded in a love story I hold dear, are far from joyful. Particularly Ed's which is post-5x11, where he knows he has BIG feelings, but feels clotheslined by his actions in season 3. "That" is not something he can ask for from Oswald, so he's settling for staying in his orbit and keeping the knives out of his back.
Tumblr media
i'm getting sentimental over you (tommy dorsey and his orchestra)
you don't know what love is (chet baker)
rehab (amy winehouse)
april fools (rufus wainwright)
don't say nothing bad about my baby (the cookies)
(what can i say) after i say i'm sorry (dinah shore)

am i blue (billie holiday)
last dance (donna summer)
they didn't believe me (dinah shore)
i'll call you mine (the zombies)
everything happens to me (chet baker)
i'm not okay (i promise) (robyn adele anderson)
just a gigolo (louis prima)
show me the way to go home (irving king)
keep yourself alive (queen)
the way you say goodnight (magnetic fields)
[x]
And Oswald’s bridges the end of season 4, when he finds Ed’s dead body and goes through the standard Penguin ‘stages of grief’ in early season 5: try to stop feeling and make the world eat shit. All of which lands him squarely in the middle of the Haven crisis and, shortly after, Pena Dura: staggered by senseless death and how much Ed still doesn’t understand.
Tumblr media
suffragette city (david bowie)
gatsu (guts' theme) (scooby)

stop the world and let me off (patsy cline)
don't look back in anger (scott bradlee's postmodern jukebox feat. maiya sykes)
sally go round the roses (the jaynettes)

Because. As much as I love a renewed accord awakening new passion... I need them both to do a melancholy conga line of raw suffering until someone forces them to talk it out at knifepoint.

my very late entry into @pjo-hoo-bigbang. thank you to my wonderful betas @percyheartsannabeth and @annabethy and artist @flyingdonuuts, love u all very much.
percabeth study abroad au // ~20k // excerpt below
She shoots a quick text to Silena, letting her know she’s ready so they can meet up to go to the beach together. They’d booked a jet skiing tour for their first day in Greece, which in hindsight seemed like a poorly thought-out plan, considering sleep felt like the more tempting option.
The university-provided housing isn’t far from Sally’s home, thankfully. Annabeth is grateful for a familiar face to help her navigate through this.
She spots the raven-haired girl making her way towards her, red sunglasses resting atop her hair, bag slung one shoulder, cool refresher in the other hand.
“Hey, babe,” she greets, and Annabeth falls into pace beside her as they make their way out of the cluster of homes towards a busier street with yellow taxis.
“Hey, Lena. Is that a new suit? You look pretty,” Annabeth compliments.
Silena, being the friend that she is, recognizes Annabeth’s ulterior motive immediately. She rolls her eyes, offering her drink to Annabeth. “You could just ask for a sip, you know.”
Annabeth greedily takes more than a sip, feeling the cold slide down her throat and settle into her stomach. “I know,” she says cheerfully. “You really do look good.”
“Well, what else is new? How are things with,” Silena pauses, “uh, what was her name, Sarah? Sammy?”
“Sally,” Annabeth corrects.
“Yeah, her. Sally…Jackson, right?”
“Yup,” Annabeth confirms, settling down on a rocky overlook on the cobblestone path, feet a little worn from all the walking she’d done today. “She’s…nice. Like, really nice.” Annabeth picks at a loose thread on her coverup. “Kind, I mean.”
“That’s good.” Silena replies lightly.
“Yeah, she’s great,” Annabeth smiles wistfully. “Fed me a whole family-sized meal the moment I stepped through the door. God, you would not believe how good those cookies were, too. I’ll try to sneak you a couple sometime.”
“I knew I picked you for a reason,” Silena smirks for a second, then she sobers up. “But?”
“But?” Annabeth asks, brows furrowing.
“But?” Silena repeats, prodding. “What’s on your mind?”
Annabeth stares at the other girl for a long moment, admiring the way her hair catches the sunlight and her lips seem especially shiny today, ignoring the knowing eyes seeing right through her.
Annabeth sighs, relenting. “I don’t know. She’s lovely and inviting and generous. Hell, she even offered to pay for the cab fare to the beach. I got lucky.” Annabeth tucks her knees to her chest as close as she can hold them, forehead coming to rest on her thighs. She sighs again, admitting, “It’s a lot. I don’t—” Annabeth pauses to discreetly wipe a lingering tear that had sprung out of thin air against the fabric of her coverup.
She feels Silena’s palm on her lower back, the contact radiating warmth that cocoons her entire body. Annabeth knows she understands.
“I don’t know what to do with that. I don’t know how to act,” Annabeth confesses.
Her father, if he could even be called that, was never the most affectionate or doting. She could get on her knees in front of him and plead for his attention like a stray dog begging for scraps and she knows he wouldn’t look up from his war models and research papers. She haunted her own house like a disgraced, uninvited apparition, slipping in and out without so much as a glance. It’s why she ran away. She’d gotten more than used to living out one corner of that Virginia brownstone, speaking only when spoken to, taking up as little space as possible, her entire life ready to be packed into a single trunk with room to spare. She wasn’t okay with it, but it was her life and she’d long ago accepted it. But it didn’t feel like much of a life, a stranger in her own house, intruding on a family that wasn’t hers.
One conversation with her best friend at the time later, she’d taken his joking advice too seriously and evacuated the brownstone with $500 in cash stolen from her dad’s wallet and a backpack with enough water and clothes to last a few days. She’d left in the dead of night, but she hadn’t bothered being quiet—what difference would it make if her father wouldn’t have noticed either way. It was the best decision she’d ever made. Her father had reached out to her intermittently, too much to let the hurt ebb away over the years, not enough to show he cared that she’d packed up her life and started anew to escape him and his wife.
Her mother…she doesn’t know much about her mother. Annabeth’s a lot like her, she’s been told. With wistfulness. With disdain. She wonders if Frederick ever looked at Athena the same way he looks at her stepmother. His current marriage is all she’s ever really known. Not wanting to spend her formative years feeling like her soul belonged somewhere else, she’d filed for emancipation and moved to New York and made a home out of a ninety square foot cell in one of the only boarding schools they had in the city. So, really, Frederick isn't her father. She doesn’t think it makes a difference.
Silena pulls her from her thoughts. “Hey, it’s okay. You just need to get acclimated with your environment. Everything’s a little awkward the first time.”
“Yeah.”
“Have you met her kids yet?”
“Nope, not yet. Her daughter’s at swim practice and her son is out doing god knows what.”
“I think the part that terrifies me most about home stays is being the awkward outsider in the middle of a family argument. Like I would not know what to do with myself if she and her son got into a screaming match or something.”
“Thanks, I didn’t have enough to worry about.”
“No problem.” Silena grabs Annabeth’s arm and places it into her lap, fiddling with her palm. “But from what you said, that shouldn’t be an issue.”
“Yeah…she has, like, the most warm, nurturing energy. She fusses over you like a grandma but she honestly isn’t old at all. Pushing forty at the most.”
“Or she just has a flawless skincare routine.”
“Or being a good person means you don’t get wrinkles.”
“You should save money for Botox then.” Silena quips, already leaning away in defense of the incoming shove.
“Oh my god, wait, you know what?” Annabeth stops in her movement. “She had an American accent. I don’t know why that’s only now just registering but I guess I’m so used to hearing them, I didn’t notice.”
“So you think she’s from the states then?”
“I mean, probably. Maybe she moved here not too long ago.”
“Well, there you go. Maybe she’ll understand you more than you realize.”
“Maybe.”
Silena gives her hand a final pat and stands up, offering a hand to help her up. Annabeth takes it, stretching out her limbs and rolling her shoulders.
“So,” Silena starts, a devious smile playing at her lips. “Ready to ogle some sexy Greeks on the beach?”
“Not unless they look like Giannis.”
“That’s a tall ask.”
Annabeth shoots a deadpan stare and Silena’s cheeky expression. “One more pun and I’ll ram my jet ski into yours.”
Silena winces, “Ooh, babe, you don’t have the bank account to cover those damages. Or my funeral costs.”
“What if the break mysteriously stopped working?”
“Let’s be real, what would you do without me here? You wouldn’t last one week.”
“You think very highly of yourself.”
“How can I not? Look at me,” she says, flipping her hair.
“Your bikini bottoms are inside out.”
“What?” Silena scrambles to feel for the tag. “No they’re not, you cunt.”
Annabeth grins, hailing a taxi. They arrive on the beach and it’s fairly crowded, as expected, families gathered along the shoreline, paragliders riding the waves. The girls make their way towards the watersports booth where two guys are conversing over a sheet of paper. One is taller and stockier, built like a football player, his smile disarmingly charming. He probably wouldn’t hurt a fly. Not her type. The other guy standing next to him, black hair tousled from the salty breeze, is also tall, but on the leaner side. Annabeth tries not to stare too hard at the way his sunkissed biceps look as his elbows rest on the chipping wood of the booth, his head held in his palms.
Annabeth pointedly ignores the very sharp, very unnecessary elbow in the ribs from Silena.
“You seeing what I’m seeing?” Silena murmurs under her breath.
“I’m not seeing Giannis so….”
Silena rolls her eyes. “You’re impossible. Learn to appreciate the eye candy when it comes your way.”
“I don’t know, it kind of feels like we’re objectifying them,” Annabeth protests.
“We are.”
“Ok.”

halfway thru the first percy jackson ep here are some thoughts
this is a bit . cheesy . not necessarily in a bad way +literally based on children's books maybe it's just the actors voice but it feels unreservedly saccharine
oh but he is just adorable .
luv u chiron ur such a freak .
Mrs Dodds whole deal feels so rushed here I don't feel like if I didn't read the books I would rly understand Mrs Dodds and the threats she represented like ohh no kinda scary monster lady . what ever . also can she get a DIFFERENT WIGG oh my GOD
why is Sally so young she's supposed to be like milf where are her crows eyes .. one thing the movies got right I'll say it . this Sally is so YOUNG it's weird
Gabe is also much less threatening than he felt in the books . I am not scared of him I am reluctantly bemused at worst
for real why did they cast such a young Sally it's offensive

I honestly think that having read the books adds so much to my interpretation. like Percy "my mom never even raised her voice" "between me and Gabe, her life wasn't easy" "I know I want exactly an easy kid"Jackson Is down not only unconditional protection and caring, but patience, grace, and forgiveness. OF COURSE he goes straight from "I don't have anything to say to him" to "I know Grover would never betray me" that fast! TBH if I didn't know those lines from the book, the attitude switch up would confuse me so fuckin much because after the whole lying sitch, Grover literally avoided him for days! but he is IMPORTANT to Percy!
Of course, it makes sense in the show, too, if you pay really close atention. Percy knew that someone, supposedly someone on his quest, would hit him where it hurts at an important moment, and when Grover refused to keep lying to cover Mr.D's ass, Percy realized exactly who he needed in his corner.
I think both are true, but one is less elaborated on imo
LITERALLY YOU SAID IT ALL im loving being able to read so many layers into this show because i read the books and i think they are hitting it out of the park in terms of all the audiences they are trying to reach
borrowing seaweed brain podcasts phrase theyre trying to read younger and older, and new fans and old fans, and i feel like they are keeping it pg and understandable to young fans like you still get the unease that percy feels around gabe and the trust he has with grover (thus the heartbreak when grover betrays him until he finds out it was for his own good and he didnt want to) and the whole medusa scene is super readable i feel like for younger audiences while SIMULTANEOUSLY older audiences can read into all those scenes and see the insidious deeper reaching nature of gabe's abuse and the sexual assault implications of medusas story and its super cool!!
plus new fans are getting introduced in a fairly good way i feel like because the show creators are adding a lot of details and the actors are portraying all the emotions PERFECTLY so you get the FEELINg of certain characterizations or scenes even if they dont have time to explicitly tell you, plus old fans get to read the HELL between the lines like personally ive analyzed all of leahs expressions and you can TELL she knows annabeth's story, meanwhile new fans are experiencing annabeth as og book fans did when we first started reading!
anyways this was only slightly related to your point which is SUPER SLAY GODDDD I COULD ANALYZE SALLYS IMPACT ON PERCY'S CHARACTER AND THE COMPLEXITIES AND INTRICACIES OF PERCY JACKSON ALL DAY but thank u for gifting me with this <3

so I finally got around to watching the PJO show and to be honest, I'm kinda disappointed by the pilot, so much so that I debate even trying later episodes. I understand that changes are always made in adaptations (even when it drives book readers crazy because all you have to do is follow the plot RIGHT THERE but I digress) and with RR on board I fully expected them to be minor or even slight improvements and yet...it seems like these changes in the first episode alone detract more than they benefit the characters or the story. be warned, rant incoming with no particular coherence.
Percy is told all about mythology by his mom throughout his entire life? (while it is sweet to hear how Sally tells Percy about the origins of his name, the idea that Percy is already a mythology expert will probably impact how he interacts with the godly world later on and it could even impact his relationship with a young Annabeth who prides herself on knowing everything in their world.)
Percy gets weird vibrations from Riptide before the big reveal? (I thought Percy wasn't supposed to even know about Riptide until "Mr. Brunner" tosses it to him in the midst of battle; why would a sword with no personal connection him be resonating like that yet?)
Dodds approaches him instantly, out in public? (the big battle between Percy and a Kindly One, instead of being dramatically held in the empty museum hall surrounded by evidence and history of their world, is shown in a showdown that didn't build any tension or confusion but instead was over in seconds without seeing Percy even do anything! seriously, all it looked like was that Percy fell down and Mrs. Dodd's accidentally impaled herself on a sword she didn't even notice him holding when she tackled him.)
Percy gets disciplined for the Nancy thing and Grover throws him under the bus!? (Grover, our best boy, great loyal friend, in Percy's POV, betrays him in the face of authority by telling a lie. WHY? was it because they didn't want to show the rest of the school year of the whole school gaslighting him? didn't want to show him stressing over finals and overhearing the conversation between Grover and "Mr. Brunner", or listening to Chiron's truly awful "it'll be alright" speech, or even him worrying about bullies and Grover the next year? so instead of just having Percy stick to his story and being summarily expelled...they have Grover LIE, make Percy feel isolated by his only friend, and miss out on more of his dynamic with Brunner which fuels how connected he is to Chiron as a mentor. so now it will seem like any bond between them is manufactured from almost nothing.)
Percy doesn't take the bus home with Grover (duh!), doesn't get the Half Blood Hill card, and has zero interaction with the Fates and seeing the string cut? (this is hugely plot relevant and I'm not sure if it will come up later, but what was the reasoning in removing the Fates scene?)
There's some kind of casual repartee between him and Gabe? (instead of rage or frustration or anger, Percy just looks like he's dealing with a spoiled toddler that he's too annoyed to be bothered with; granted neither of them look like best buddies but there is a stunning difference between this and the outright hostility that was present in the book. it'll be hard to truly buy into his desire to kill Gabe later on instead of just telling his mom to divorce him or something.)
Sally isn't there to welcome him home? (so first of all, Sally was not forced to work by Gabe on the day that her baby boy came home and you're telling me that she chose to have Percy make his own way home and be greeted by Gabe while she waited outside just chilling in the rain with melodic music??? what have you done with my Sally Jackson??? this is not the mother who worries about her little boy or is scared of Gabe and how he treats him)
Sally shows much more dominance in her relationship with Gabe? (I don't love that Sally shackled herself to the human garbage can that is Gabe Ugliano in the books, but the show certainly adjusts their dynamic in a way that changes quite a lot: when Percy expresses his fear over what's been happening mythology wise, Sally yells for Gabe to summon him from the other room...and he comes immediately...to which he is one-sidedly informed that she and Percy are going to Montauk, no permission needed. Sally and Gabe then proceed to have a silly argument about sandwiches in which Sally holds all the power and Gabe caves. I didn't get the sense that Sally was afraid of Gabe's reaction at all. He is the required but not appreciated partner on a necessary group project at best, not an abusive husband that she fears and suffers from for her son or that she or Percy truly have a reason to hate him to death.)
Percy opens up, unprompted by Sally, about what happened on the field trip and she uses the same over dramatic prompts and weighted pauses that every fantastical movie or tv show does in order to reveal or extract important information and that PJO eschewed so expertly until now.
Sally gets him to talk and then tells him her knowledge of what happened. (She also takes the time to tell Percy that they come to the cabin because it's where she met his father....didn't he already know that??? Apparently instead of it being a regular story, this is the first time Percy is hearing anything about his father??? Sally tells him his father is a god, and about halfbloods??? It was agreed that Sally explains things? If that was the plan and not a sudden decision then why does she suck at it? She's so vague and confused and unprepared!)
Apparently the Mist blocked GROVER, a satyr, from seeing things? (so instead of Sally breaking away and escaping to Montauk, delaying Grover in tracking her down, which is a reasonable explanation...it's now that a mythical creature is blocked by the thing that exists to block mortal beings from seeing they mythical?)
No line about donkey vs. goat? (granted, this isn't a big deal, but it's great characterization to have Grover and Percy bicker, learn more about Satyrs, and have poor Sally pull the mom voice from the front seat all while in a high stakes race)
The lightning didn't hit their car and Sally battles a Minotaur with the car instead of her wits? (...I don't even know, minor changes that take away from the brilliance that is Sally Jackson.)
Everything is so poorly lit that I literally can't tell what's going on. (do moons not exists in movies anymore? why does ambient light never play a role? I'm sure Artemis would've been curious to look down on a boy who chose to protect his satyr friend and mother over rescuing himself!)
Grover is totally conscious so that Sally can get an oath of protection from him for Percy? (even though it is his literal job to be a protector of halfbloods and Percy specifically? there was no narrative need for this change; maybe they wanted Grover to look better, but him getting knocked unconscious because of Zeus' lightning bolt is hardly something he could've controlled! getting rid of that part for this oath is so pointless)
Percy...chooses...to separate from his mom? (Percy doesn't need to part with her because he's carrying Grover up the hill...and he is somehow convinced to voluntarily leave his mom behind in a dangerous monster-ridden forest while he crosses the border safely? instead of them all trying to get up together?)
Percy fights with Riptide???? (A sword he should not have yet? Instead of his bare hands, pure rage, and water enhanced abilities alone? again, no narrative need for this yet)
GROVER carries PERCY across the border? (and is welcomed by a whole group of people who were, what, just chilling by Thalia's Pine and watching this all play out?)

Just finished Percy Jackson's tree episodes so here's what public opinions i agree and disagree with so far:
1. I agree that the tension is off but it's really not that noticeable for me to not be able to enjoy the show. It's kinda a bir choppy ig, I think if they fix it in season too (and there's no way they won't it's like the main thing fans mention all the time) it's gonna be perfect.
2. I don't agree that the way they handled Gabe is horrible. It's the third episode they have plenty of time to make him more "openly" abusive or whatever it is u have problem with (even tho it's really clear that he is esp in his behaviour towards percy). Plus percy legit didn't know he was hitting sally until the end of the book so stop with this panic it's ridiculous, don't judge it so harshly until u actually see what's gonna happen. They've changed some scenes they can do the same here
3. I didn't like ms dods scene in the begining it was underwhelming.
4. Grover is the bestest boy.
5. Annabeth did kinda annoyed me until the end of episode three but i still really enjoyed her conflict (?) with percy and i think I'll like her character much more now that she's not that self absorbed, or rather insensitive to Percy's state, becos that's what it felt like to me.
I don't agree with people bashing her for not siding with medusa, she's 12, her mother is a goddess and the lady in front of her killed a lot of innocents, obvs she's not gonna side with her. Nobody wants to think their mother is a bad person.
6. Walker is Percy through and through, bitches who whine about him not being book accurate (or rather not being logan) are annoying and will never understand the true essence of percy that he possesses.
So far i enjoyed the show a ridiculous amount and i think some of u would too if you stopped nitpicking Every single second on screen. Franky I don't thinking I would've noticed half the stuff people cry about on here if i haven't read about it (and yes I've read the books obvs).
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

books i read in dec 2023
Tumblr media
[these are all short + casual reviews - feel free to ask about individual ones if u want my full thoughts or ask for my goodreads!!]
fighting for my life this december but you know what? i ended with a great and relaxing holiday season 🎄 hope everyone also got some good reading done to close out the year!
captive prince (reread) + pet - c.s. pacat ★★★★☆ (romantasy)
i first read this series 6 years ago and can i just say that i definitely get it now. way more than i did 6 years ago. it's a fucking masterclass in the erotic. a good, slow burn romance where the tension is off the charts and the whole situation is a delicious amount of fucked up
the beak of the finch - jonathan weiner ★★★★☆ (science nonfiction)
there were some obvious gaps, and it drags in the middle chapters, but it's also beautifully written with some lovely turns of phrase
[reread] a dangerous path - erin hunter ★★★★☆ (animal fantasy)
can't believe it's 2023 and i'm still having profound feelings about fireheart and bluestar. one of my faves from the original series
overcoming unwanted intrusive thoughts - sally m. winston ★★★★☆ (psychology nonfiction)
i don't think i actually get intrusive thoughts but this was a useful read to better understand what some people close to me might have going on in their heads <3
the mystery guest - nita prose ★★★★☆ (mystery)
surprisingly really enjoyed this, the main character actually reads like a protagonist instead of a forced gimmick. the mystery itself was pretty subpar but i found the dual timeline pretty compelling
recitatif - toni morrison ★★★★☆ (historical short story)
it's more famously an exercise than it is an actual story, but the story itself is at least functionally interesting
the lottery & other stories - shirley jackson ★★★★☆ (horror short story collection)
impressively thematically coherent for a short story collection, though i think shirley jackson is one of those authors where she and i are simply concerned about different things in life
legendborn - tracy deonn ★★★☆☆ (YA contemporary fantasy)
diverse protag gives a genuinely interesting spin to an otherwise pretty standard YA that's mostly played straight
natural beauty - ling ling huang ★★★☆☆ (horror)
great concept but just didn't quite get there. definitely an interesting debut and i'll be looking for more books from this author
[reread] honeybee - trista mateer ★★★☆☆ (poetry)
reread this to see if i wanted to give it as an xmas gift (the answer was no) it is exactly the kind of middling breakup poetry i was remembering but also more gay
hallowe'en party - agatha christie ★★★☆☆ (mystery)
the actual mystery was quite good but unfortunately agatha christie obviously had uhhh some things on her mind when she wrote this one and it kept getting interrupted by what felt like essentially an unrelated political tirade
the winners - fredrik backman ★★☆☆☆ (contemporary)
the idea behind this was pretty good but unfortunately i am not convinced it needed to exist and especially not for almost 700 pages. the first book is great on its own!
our numbered days - neil hilborn ★★☆☆☆ (poetry)
some spoken word poetry simply is not meant for the page. look this guy up on youtube if you want to see his artistry. but also i think the way he wrote about his exes kind of gave me the ick

my brain hates me and wants me to Suffer so i’m going to spread my pain
imagine the great prophecy went as people expected, imagine somehow percy kills luke (like maybe luke indicates to where the spot is but is like “i cant do it myself, i have to keep kronos down so u have to stab me” or smth) and kronos breaks luke’s control and stabs percy in the back (maybe he grabbed backbiter before it melted or smth) and now both percy and luke are dying
so now the pain
imagine annabeth, the girl who lost everything — everyone she’s ever loved has hurt her or abandoned her in some way. her mother left he on her dads doorstep, her dad ignored her and started a new mortal family, thalia died only to join the hunters when she was brought back, and luke turned evil and followed kronos, every family she’s ever had has fallen apart, but percy was there, the boy whose fatal flaw is loyalty, who chose her over and over again, who loved her before they were even together — watching one of the last people in her life leave her.
percy would never voluntarily leave her, he snuck out of camp and trekked across the country to find her, never once believing she was dead, who held her at the bottom of siren bay as she sobbed into his shoulder, he would always choose her. but fate is cruel and the choice was ripped from him, and he was ripped from her.
her stumbling over with a broken arm and holding his hand and she sobs, grover grabbing his other hand in shock, luke laying next to percy as they both die. imagine percy grabbing grover’s hand and frantically telling him to break the empathy link. imagine him apologizing over and over to annabeth about not being able to be her something permanent. imagine an understanding passing between luke and percy in their final moments and them turning to grover and annabeth, telling them to not let it happen again, all the unclaimed, all the death, all the pain. don’t let it happen again.
imagine annabeth and grover riding silently in the elevator only for it to open to sally and paul threatening the security guard and her turning around and seeing annabeth and grover but not her son, not her boy. imagine annabeth just apologizing over and over much like how percy did on olympus, sally falling to her knees and bringing paul down with her with gut wrenching sobs.
