A: They went to Yu Garden which Taylor said was incredible, and he tried 糖葫蘆 Tanghulu, a traditional Chinese sweet which is candied Chinese Hawthorn

Q: How was the past few days for him and where did he go

A: He's been in China for four nights now (He came by himself btw) First night he stayed at the J Hotel which is the third tallest building in the world and the tallest hotel in the world. After that, he went to 濮院 (the venue for the GQ event) for two nights and it was incredible

Q: How's his jetlag?

A: It's hitting right now 😂 He's been drinking a lot of tea and getting better

Q: What led him to choose to become an actor instead of a competitive swimmer

A: That was an easy choice, he swan for 10 years and then decided he didn't want to swim in college, and then decided he didn't want to be a doctor (his brother's a doctor) and maybe disappointed his parents (H: No way!) It was a hard decision but he decided to move to LA and pursue acting (H: and you made it!)

Q: How is he enjoying being an actor?

A: It's tough, ups and downs. It's kind of like swimming, it's an individual activity, but you also get to collaborate with the community, which is fun.

Q: What are his favourite three movies and why?

A: The Matrix, Fight Club and Interstellar, he likes movie with a twist

Q: What type of music does he like

A: Deep House, Tropical House, Reggaeton

And then the host taught him a couple of Chinese phrases

Q: What sparked his interest in fashion

A: His dad bought him a subscription to GQ when he was younger which started his interest in fashion, and then he started watching fashion-related movies (like Brad Pitt in Allied) which further cultivated that interest. Maybe in the future, he'll try out characters like that

Q: Did he meet any friends in the GQ event?

A: He met Li Xian who he met in Italy earlier, otherwise met a lot of new people.

Q: Why is he passionate about being eco-friendly when it comes to fashion?

A: It was inspired initially by his mom. They lived in the countryside with horses, cows, and fields away from the city, and he has seven siblings (he's the sixth oldest/ third youngest) so there are a lot of hand-me-downs and not a lot of new things, so the family kept on using the same things. He gained a deeper awareness of the issue in recent years.

Q: Talk a bit about fashion sustainability

A: A lot of fast fashion material and clothes are thrown out really soon and disposed of really quickly (despite still being in good shape) but a lot of clothing material, especially synthetic fabric can't be recycled, so it's just like throwing out plastic. Actually, a lot of clothes can keep being reused and styled. He's had the inner shirt he's currently wearing for four years.

Q: Any future plans?

A: He has a film project early next year and there are other things he's excited about but can't talk about yet

Q: Is he going to Shanghai Disneyland?

A: He wants to but he doesn't have time

H: You don't even need to go to Disney you look like a Disney character already! (Damn right!!!)

Q: What food have you had in China so far?

A: Don't get him started on the subject of food 😂 He's had a Shanghainese Lunch today and a Cantonese (YAY) lunch yesterday, and he's looking for some spicy food for tomorrow. Also, he had a really crazy allergic reaction and his lips got giant (???). He needs to be careful with food.

T: I see talk about RWRB, what do you want to know? I'll give some secret intel

A: ... He doesn't know. He says he thinks Casey has to write another book for that.

H: He's leaving after three days

Q: Do you know any Chinese nicknames of yours?

A: 忒樂. (tei le, or "Tay"-le) meaning too happy (I made a list of the boys' Chinese nicknames here)

Annddd... That's it! The live was pretty short, like 20 minutes? He ended it by picking up the phone and showing the audience the Shanghai city view himself (I was too busy typing to get a screenshot)

just finished the rwrb movie and although i really enjoyed it (and was kicking my feet giggling the whole time) i do have a couple of major criticisms, some of which i think aren’t really the movie’s fault because they had to fit a whole book into 2 hours, but some of which left me kind of disappointed:

-i feel slightly icky that bea and nora got their screentime SIGNIFICANTLY reduced even after june got cut entirely (which i was upset about, but did understand). i loved zahra and adored her on screen but i do think it’s very odd that she is pretty much the only major female character in this movie since bea was nonexistent and nora got permanently spirited away to pez’s bed or something sometime during the second act

-it felt like a lot of the internal conflict in alex and henry’s relationship was very unbalanced and henry heavy - alex’s neurodivergence was erased, his bi epiphany was barely even an epiphany, and him not being explicitly kicked off the campaign after ellen finds out about him and henry essentially killed his whole subplot about realising he doesn’t need to have everything achieved at thirty and deciding he wants to apply to law school instead. which wouldn’t have been terrible but on the flipside it felt weird that we didn’t see very much of henry’s family considering how much they affect and shape his fear of being outed and his feeling of being in a glass cage - e.g bea’s treatment by the media during her active addiction (which was entirely erased), the extent of the tension between him and philip. felt like henry’s pov scenes were a super wasted opportunity for that and we were mostly just being Told about all of these things

-i am not actually that mad about oscar and ellen still being together lol but i felt like in the scene with oscar smoking the cigar on the balcony they were kinda building up to there being significant strain in his and ellen’s relationship that just wasn’t explored. especially since it’s clear oscar would never be able to be president because he’s not a natural born citizen + the sacrifice of his career for ellen’s is so much bigger now that he’s first gentleman in this version

-pacing in general was a bit off but the worst offender was the fact that there was a complete time skip between the alex henry confrontation/reconciliation and the outing. so much of the tension and desperation from that outing scene comes from the fact that the risk of it happening was slowly increasing throughout the book and it felt almost inevitable (the elevator cctv being leaked, henry having to fake date june) and honestly making it so abrupt weirdly reduced a lot of its impact for me

-similarly i actually completely understand why the richards plot / rafael luna plot was cut (i suspect republican election interference hits a bit too close to home after 2020) but my god was miguel a lame fucking villain and him being queer and hispanic erased a lot of the original commentary about racism and homophobia that the richards plot lent itself to. like in general this movie was a lot lighter than the book which is fine! but for a movie where the main subplot is a presidential election So Much of the political themes were heavily neutered or cut to the point that it seemed like the pressure on henry and alex’s relationship was disproportionately coming from henry’s side when in the book it was more balanced

again on the whole i really really loved this movie and i knew going in that certain changed were going to be made. and i hope more movies get made like it! these r just my Thots and i may change my mind when i rewatch it with my friend tomorrow

#rwrb #red white and royal blue #putting this in the tags but the movie actually kind of emphasised a lot of the problems i have with the book #re: gender at least #i remember first reading the book in 2019 and being upset that june giving up so many of her dreams #to support her family wasnt explored more #like with her ex boyfriend who it was implied she still kind of had feelings for but had moced to california #it also feels slightly disingenuous that casey hyped up bea/nora so much after the teaser scene of them talking was revealed #except that was the only scene they ever interacted in. ever #and i know it’s not that deep I KNOWWWW #but i’ve been thinking a lot about fandom treatment of women lately #and weirdly this movie kind of exemplifies a lot of the issues i have witb fandom as a whole and not just rwrb #anyway.

Just dropping by to say hi to all the new followers. It's very nice to see all of you here! I'm very excited for the trailer tomorrow, but gifs might take a while to come out because I won't be home :(.

No one is obligated to like the movie, but in this blog I just want people that do like it. So, if you comment mean stuff on my posts and you get blocked.

i am actually incredibly frustrated by the advance screenings of rwrb starting so early, especially as someone who couldn’t even consider attending them for various reasons.

there’s going to be someone who ruins it and spoils the changes & movie plot and so im going to have to stop looking at the fan stuff from like tomorrow evening which sucks so much. (the first screener is london tomorrow night).

i want to be surprised watching it for the first time and getting to react to it all at once. and so i’m going to have to spend two weeks avoiding it after mostly enjoying all the fan hype for it - especially as the strike means theres no other content coming out (or barely any). really disappointed.

im not going to be posting anything that isnt from rwrb twitter accounts from now on until the 11th. what a shame.

Bruised Eyes and Sweet Drinks

Author’s note: This is just a short RWRB drabble that popped in my head where Henry reacts to Alex getting hurt by some homophobic protestors. Big shout out to @redlikestowrite who was my beta for this work, I probably wouldn’t have been confident enough to publish without his help. Well anyways here it is, I hope you enjoy!

Anger had flooded Henry as soon as he had heard that Alex was ambushed at the airport by some homophobic religious group, but he had, at the very least thought he was prepared for Alex’s reaction. He was prepared for the tension in Alex’s shoulders as he walked down the boarding ramp, along with his slight frown. What he wasn’t prepared for was the bruised and slightly swollen black eye that now graced his features.

Henry was moving as soon as he saw it, gently taking a hold of Alex’s chin to get a better look at the bruising. Alex opens his mouth to speak but Henry quickly cuts him off.

“What happened” he shocks himself when his voice nearly comes out as a growl.

Alex avoids the question for a second by taking Henry’s hands in his and forcing Henry to look him in the eyes.

“Some asshole managed to get past security and grabbed me before they had a chance to stop him.”

Henry grits his teeth and lightly caresses the bruised eye with the bottom of his thumb. He grits his teeth even harder after watching Alex flinch away from the pain of the light touch. Sensing his anger, Alex grabs the hand cupping his cheek and gently presses his lips against Henry’s knuckles to calm him.

“It’s okay sweetheart, you should have seen the black eye Amy left him with” he whispered, chuckling lightly.

Henry notices the Alex’s still tensed posture and decides that his anger can wait for now. Instead, he leans forward to slowly press his lips against Alex’s, his mind already racing with ways to cheer up his lover. There were already dozens of sweets and gifts waiting back at the palace for Alex to unwrap, but all those were going to be used to spoil Alex tomorrow night during their Valentine's dinner.

Henry notices Alex’s slight shiver and sighs. He quickly rubs his hands up and down Alex’s arms in an attempt to warm him. He gives up quickly, instead grabbing one Alex’s hands with a quick “Let’s get you to the car”, before dragging the shorter boy after him.

They both move quickly to get into the backseats once they reach the car, both equally as eager to get out of the brisk weather. Once they’re both happily settled, Alex leaning into the comforting warmth of Henry's chest, he starts to idly play with soft strands of Alex’s hair. Both sit in pleasant silence until Henry notices the glazed faraway look in his boyfriend’s eyes.

“Alex”, he presses gently.

It takes him a minute but he eventually replies. “Yeah?”

“Why don’t we have a movie night tonight? We can get some popcorn, maybe a couple of jaffa cakes, just the two of us?”

Alex shifts away from Henry’s chest so he can get a better look at his face. “I thought you wanted to have a family dinner tonight,'' he asks, genuine concern crossing his features.

“I did but that was before...,” he again looks to Alex’s black eye, his jaw clenching for second. “Now I would much rather spend the night snogging my boyfriend, while we watch the entire Star Wars Trilogy, and maybe after we can-,” but Alex is already kissing him, grinning as he presses against him.

“You’re sure no one will mind” Alex asks, pressing one last kiss against Henry’s lips.

Henry laughs. “It’s just Mum and Bea, I’m sure they won’t mind,” he says, again reaching to cress Alex’s now tangled hair.

Alex leans into the touch, laughing as he says “Fine, but we have to have hot chocolate, I don’t think I stomach a cup of tea right now.”

Henry scoffs, pretending to be offended, refusing to touch Alex until he thoroughly apologizes for the insult.

Before long, both he and Alex are snuggled on Henry’s bed in their pajamas, contentedly sipping from their mugs of hot chocolate as they watch the end of “Return of the Jedi”.

Alex groans when his phone starts going off, no doubt worried texts from the other concerning what happened. Sure enough, Alex is pulling up the shared group chat on his phone, looking over the dozens of messages the others had already left. Instead of replying to them all with a long explanation, Alex just leans back, taking a quick picture of him and Henry lying together with their mugs full of hot chocolate, his bruised eye and their content smiles both proudly on display. He sends it to them with a quick “Don’t worry, a Star Wars marathon with hot chocolate and an even hotter boyfriend always make things better.” The others seemed satisfied enough after that, leaving them to their peaceful movie night together.

It still isn’t until a couple days later, however, after Henry sees an article about the miniature gay parade going through the neighbors of the protesters that had attacked Alex that night, that the last of his anger dissipates. Now all he has to do is make sure that Alex doesn’t find out that it wasn’t Nora who leaked the photo from that night to the press.

WHAT is your favourite color? pink blue and purple, all in pale pastel shades

Do you prefer to read, write or watch TV/Movies? (Or rank them in order of preference!) I love all of them! watching TV and movies is definitely the easiest and probably the one I do most since I don’t have to think about it but I still absolutely adore reading and writing

What was the last song you specifically looked up to listened to? I’m actually not sure because I usually just shuffle whatever playlist I’m feeling but potentially Don’t Lose Your Head from SIX because I frequently want to listen to that

What was your first pet growing up? What was their name? If you didn’t have one, what did you want? I actually don’t know which pet came first, I’ve had a lot in my life but the first would have either been one of the fish or one of the rabbits. The first of those I really don’t remember the names of because tbh I think some of them might have been gotten before I was born. The first whose names I remember though were a rabbit named Elmo and a Guinea Pig named Moley.

If you can only recommend watching one show, what show would you recommend? omg I really have no idea. there’s so many great shows out there, I think for sheer entertainment value though I’d pick Don’t Tell The Bride

(Let’s say there’s no one in there but you, so no need to fear the plague.) a fuck load of yeast, good hair dye, coke, can I say the entire homeware section?, new pyjamas, my favourite smoothie (which they didn’t have today :(), some more ice cream, some more fresh fruit, maybe a nice new dress or something since our supermarket has some pretty nice clothes, also some more summer shoes bc I left all mine at uni

What’s the strangest nickname you’ve ever had? no one ever gives me nicknames. at least not that I can remember.

If you started a podcast tomorrow, what would it be about? probably me chatting about one random new hyperfixation each time. Space stuff, a book I’ve read, movies, random bits of history and mythology, videogames, whatever really. It would probably be very Drunk History style except I’m not drunk, I’m just Like That

What is your favorite dessert? Oh GOD. I love a bit of chocolate fudge cake, or brownies, or just anything with chocolate in it tbh

Are you socially isolating? If so, who’s with you? Yep. I’m with my mum and dad, both of them have to work but my dad at least gets to work from home so I’m not totally alone all day

Do you have any holiday traditions you really enjoy? I don’t think my family and I have any ‘just us’ holiday traditions except always going to the cinema and getting take out on Christmas eve. our holidays tend to pretty much like everyone else’s

Do you like where you live? If so, what’s your favorite part of it? If not, where would you like to live? I live 2 places at the moment I guess and I actually really like both of them. Nottingham is really different from what I’m used to at home since it’s a big city and I grew up in a village and now live in a small town. Idk what it is about it but I actually enjoy being there unlike other big cities like London. Where my I guess main home is is really nice as well. We live right by a load of woods and fields and you can go on really nice walks. We also live near the sea so that’s nice and it’s also quiet where our house is but it’s not that far to get into the town so all in all it’s a really nice place to live even if maybe the town as a whole wouldn’t be considered one of the better places to live in the UK. We’re also only a couple hours from London so that’s handy.

Quarantine Tag Game

Thanks so much for the tag @angelsfalling16 and @theflyingpeach!! :))

Are you staying home from work/school?

Yes, but I teach so I’m trying to come up with online learning stuff. This past week was actually my spring break (I use that term loosely bc I have pretty much been having constant virtual meetings with my admin) so the next few weeks will be “actual work”.

If you’re staying home, who is there with you?

My cat. My roommate is actually at a conference right now (somehow it didn’t get cancelled?) so after tomorrow it’ll be the three of us.

Are you a homebody?

Really depends on my mood. Like this is my natural habitat, but also like I want to go to work lol.

An event that you were looking forward to that got canceled?

It hasn’t been cancelled yet, but I’m sure it will be soon- my graduation. I’m supposed to get my grad degree may 16th so I’m casually dying that I might not get my hood.

(I’m also supposed to do a 2 week long road trip with my close friends this summer in celebration.. which we are holding off planning bc we don’t know where the world will be in June.)

What movies have you watched recently?

Howl’s Moving Castle, Love, Simon, and Thor Ragnarok. ;)

What shows are you watching?

I love b99 (anyone watch this weeks episode??? I LOVE).

But I also started the untamed earlier today. And it’s a JOURNEY.

What music are you listening to?

Well right now I’m kind of binging a bunch of punk girl rock stuff (I’m working on a playlist for the rwrb big bang.. idk how much more I can say bc I don’t really know the rules of it? But there you go).

But also Conan Gray dropped his album so that’s also been out there.

(But mostly I’m all over the place.. I have too many playlists that I rotate through..)

What are you reading?

I’m thinking of rereading Carry On. But I really need to get reading my TBR list (someone yell at me please to do it!).

What are you doing for self-care?

Self-care? I don’t know her.

(Really though.. I’m a capricorn, we are notoriously horrible at self-care.)

But I guess I dyed my hair pink last weekend out of self-destruction and the idea that I probably won’t have work for the rest of the semester.
