Takeaways from the Volume 9 Epilogue:
--
One thing I really like about Oscar’s ‘If there was anything I wish I could borrow from you…’ monologue is that it laid out/confirmed something I’ve always felt was a major aspect of Oscar’s dynamic with Ruby that I nonetheless feel a lot of the fandom has missed: That Oscar very much sees Ruby as a mentor and an example to follow, and how their dynamic is specifically a foil to what we saw between Ruby and Ozpin. That Ruby acts as a mentor and example to Oscar in the same way Ozpin was to Ruby, and that Ruby is a far BETTER mentor and example to Oscar than Ozpin ever was to her. Which, as an aside, is a dynamic I can’t help but feel a lot of people have been misinterpreting as ‘ship-teasing’ and is one of the main reasons I’ve simply never been able to see Oscar as any kind of viable love-interest to Ruby. Frankly the dynamic of ‘Ruby is the mentor and example to Oscar that Ozpin couldn’t be for her’ is simply so much more INTERESTING than any kind of romance could ever hope to be.
--
Even in animatic form, Winter basically going overdrive on the maiden powers was a sight to behold. And her own monologue had all the self-deprecation we were expecting. Our girl is clearly holding on by a thread and it’s going to be REAL interesting seeing how she reacts and adjusts to her sister not actually being dead. As in, I can imagine a situation where Winter tries to throw herself into a heroic sacrifice with the belief that Weiss would make a better Maiden than her.
Also, Winter’s monologue giving major focus to how Penny is super-super-dead-dead-and-definitely-not-coming-back-for-really-realsies, as she is talking to the sister who she ALSO believes is DEFINITELY also dead? Specifically with the words that Penny is gone, when Penny’s last words to her were that she’d be ‘part of you’?
Yeah, there is no way in hell we’ve seen the last of Penny XD
--
The CROWN. Like it was only a few shots, but as someone who read the CFVY Books (which you totally should if you haven’t, they’re great), holy shit I was NOT expecting them to pop up here.
I mean, in hindsight it makes perfect sense that they’d be involved in Volume 10. They’re basically Vacuo’s equivalent to Vale’s criminal element and the White Fang splinter faction as Salem’s co-opted insurgency group, with Jax and Gillian joining Roman, Adam and Jacques as the latest of Salem’s unwitting patsies. It’s definitely going to be real interesting seeing the crew deal with them. Like it’s really fun to imagine Team RWBY in particular being kind of exasperated at seeing Jax’s probably doing a whole ‘With Salem’s help I shall be King!’ shtick after everything they’ve seen with Roman, Adam and Jacques.
Oh and if you don’t know, Jax has a mind-control semblance, so him trying to use that on Yang could actually lead to a sneaky callback to the Justice League crossover, ie; Yang doing a ‘Yeah, I’m not doing THAT shit again.’ XD
--
Qrow’s whole vibe through this is fascinating. Like his section may have been the one we already saw, but after seeing the abject depression and growing despair of all the other characters, Qrow actually being OPTIMISTIC hit so much harder.
--
Raven showing up at the end is… interesting.
I’ll admit that ever since we saw that specific clip a few months back, I’ve been rather conflicts about Raven showing up to deliver RWBY+J to Vacuo, particularly after Ruby’s tree vision. Like for one it felt a bit random and unnecessary. The tree already deposited the Ever After team outside of Vacuo so they didn’t exactly need help getting there. Not to mention that it kind of clotheslines the story-thread set up by Ruby’s vision; that she now has a reason to track Raven down to get the ANSWERS to what happened to Summer. Finally, it’s just kind of… random? Like where did Raven even come from to get the team?
But now having seen the clip with its intended context, I’m definitely more on board with it. Particularly hearing from Kerry and Eddy that the original ending for the penultimate episode had RWBY+J going through the portal to arrive at their memorial stone, and met by a ‘Mysterious Figure’, ie; Raven. Here it feels like were getting more set up to get answers later as to what Raven was doing at the memorial.
And really, now that I’ve thought about it more, this method kind of puts the thread of Ruby going to Raven for answers even MORE into focus. Like the story reintroduces Raven in the present right after Ruby got a vision basically saying ‘hey, Raven is important’. And now going into Volume 10, we’re pretty much perfectly positioned for Ruby to pull Raven aside for those all-important ‘Why were you fucking my mom? What happened to my mom?’ questions.
--
Finally… yeah that ending hit me a LOT harder than I was expecting. Like that ending was HOPE in its purest form and it was honestly beautiful to see. Particularly right now with the future of the show seeming so uncertain. I’ve personally been optimistic about RWBY’s future (in a manner not unlike Qrow’s vibes I suppose lol), but damn the hopefulness of that ending hit especially hard, and was something I’ll admit I needed. And I imagine the rest of us could use as well.
We'll be getting Volume 10. And 11, and 12, and however many more it takes to finish this story. At this point, I have no doubt of that.

Honestly, as much as I’m shocked the spin-off novels seem to be coming into canon, the Crown really makes sense as Agents of Salem (although they did stand the test independently).
Basically their whole deal is promoting the notion that Vacuo was better off without the influence of any of the other kingdoms, even those that didn’t do direct harm like Vale.
And the key thing is that none of that resentment is unfounded. Mistral and Atlas straight up colonized them, and destroyed the desert ecosystem in the process. Vale did nothing to help (Velvet, who’s from Vale, notes this in the books, so it’s likely true — she’s got no reason to tell an ugly lie about her home). And then Vacuo sided with Vale in the Great War just to lose their own monarchy and government in favor of what Vale wanted.
Vacuo’s history is a testament to the worst parts of humanity, to the divide and conquer strategy Salem loves so much. Pitting her enemies against each other is their thing.
But the Epilogue shows us through Qrow that as much as there’s conflict and strife between native Vacuans and the many foreign refugees, there’s also rather a lot of kindness and charity and goodwill. A lot of it centered on the memory of Ruby’s speech.
Ruby, who exposed Salem to the world and thus gave every nation a common enemy. Ruby, who ensured that everyone understands that they have to come together now. Ruby, who is gonna return to Vacuo with a potentially permanent solution not just for Salem but for the gods who created her.
Getting Amity Tower up even for a moment really was a triumph.

Gillian or Gillian?
For all those who ship Jaune and Gillian I have a very important question... Do you say Gillian with a hard G or Gillian with a soft G?
Basically, are you saying it like how you read it, Gillian or are you saying it like you would say Jillian?
I for one say Gillian with a hard G because that's how I read it and I kind of like it.

Tyrian: "If General Ironwood comes to his senses and calls upon aid from Vacuo, all will be lost."
Me, who's read Before the Dawn, which establishes that Theodore only cares about Vacuo, and only STRONG Vacuans at that: *laughs* "Oh that REALLY didn't age well."

Ozpin’s age and Beacon
Questions asked by @angstandhappiness
Who do you think was the headmaster/headmistress of Beacon before Ozpin?
Hard to say as crwby really hasn’t gone into detail about their lore and history so it really is impossible to say who was in charge of beacon before Ozpin, heck they still haven’t even named the King of Vale so I doubt we will ever get a line of succession and names of all of the other headmasters before Oz but if I had to say who as a character and why they were chosen it would probably be someone who was part of the secret group and thus a follower of Ozpin that became headmaster either before or soon after the death of Ozpin’s predecessor as Glynda would post fall of beacon.
What kind of initiation test did they do for newcomers, and how did they use it to sort out the teams?
Same as the last question but as far as I’m aware it would probably have been the same initiation test that the main characters did in V1 as Glynda implies that this is more or less the standard by that time with the only difference being the choice of relics. Like there is nothing that implies that there was a different or other form of initiation prior to what we see the mains do in V1.
When was Ozpin chosen by the incarnation cycle, and at what age?
Hard to say but given key dialogue from Raven in V5 and the confirmation that Ozpin was Younger than Theodore who was stated to be in his mid to late 40’s (44-49) making him the youngest of the 4 current headmasters before the fall of beacon. And since Yang stated that he was the youngest ever to become a headmaster, implying that the average age is significantly older for someone to become a headmaster but would have to have been older than 21 years of age as he would have needed to graduate first.
But he would still be older than team STRQ as he was their headmaster during their time at Beacon so Older than 17 at the time by at least 4 years. And since it was confirmed that Ozpin spent some time traveling as the fairy tales of remnant book is a collection of stories Ozpin gathered from his journeys which he would later add them to Beacons library and academic curricular so at least a couple of years to travel and explore the known world (assuming he didn’t do much during his time as a student.)
So, with that in mind our possible age range for Ozpin is at least 5-7 years older than STRQ when they went to beacon for the first time (STRQ; 17/Oz; 22-24) and assuming that Raven had Yang at 23 and STRQ were at least 40-41 by the fall of Beacon that makes Ozpin's possible age at death at or around either 45 or 46 and still be younger than Theo who is nearing 50)
With this in mind and since there's no age criteria in the reincarnation cycle it is likely possible that Ozpin was likely chosen during but most likely before his time at beacon. So at or around 17 years of age did he become the man with two souls.
Sorry for the delay but here is the first quarter of your questions let me know what you think

I have not and I absolutely refuse too, E.C. Myers isn't getting a penny out of me for his trilogy of dogshit, character assassination, and nothingburgers.

Gosh I still can’t wait for them to get to Vacuo and find, along with whatever Oscar, Emerald, Ren, Nora, and Winter do there, that it has just dealt with a series of kidnappings and violent takeover attempt by descendants of a royal family. And now every other kingdom in Remnant (including Menagerie if they go there upon seeing the ruins of Atlas) is at their doorstep.

Since I'm almost done reading RWBY books (After the Fall, Before the Dawn, and Before the Dawn), I have learned that if Remnant had a women in STEM program we would have far less villains/problems.

So this turned into basically all of my immediate reactions, I will say more in depth when I have time which may not be until June:
It’s occurring to me now how devastating even thinking he lost Weiss must’ve been for Whitley.
Sooo Winter handling her grief VERY well, honestly I am a little worried for her
TEAM CFVY FUCK YEAH COCO AND CO
Oh yeah, the refugees from Atlas would’ve just drawn a ton of Grimm towards Vacuo. I’m sure that was great for relations with a country that already colonized them and was now a massive burden on the economy.
Like Oscar straight up used the world Colonization we are NOT hiding it
People flinching at Nora’s scars noooooo
Oscar saying he wishes he could borrow Ruby’s certainty when we KNOW she’s never certain and just tries to put on a brave face
Even just in outline Shade academy is SO cool
Ren just immediately peeking up at the sight of Nora made me so happy, and seeing him visibly bury his emotions for the sake of supporting her (because he can see she’s doing the same) made me much sadder
Mercury tries so hard to act all scary and evil but he clearly looks miserable with Tyrian
“No Place for Royalty” is the Crown coming back? I thought for sure that the novel plots would be self contained!
I realized after a minute that MEH was Marrow, Elm, and Harriet, but I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF when I first saw that label
(Also Qrow being grouped with the Happy Huntresses…?)
PETER PORT BACK AGAIN??? DR. OOBLECK???
I guess if Salem is going North to South it makes sense to trample Vale all over again on the way from Atlas to Vacuo, but also, HAVEN’T THEY BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH????
Qrow and Willow recovering alcoholics together!
Marrow and Fiona’s uncle!
I loved Qrow’s little speech about how small kindnesses are often all it takes to restore your faith. Even when you can’t make a huge difference, doing something good, however small, will end up helping someone.
Also he’s still wearing Clover’s pin!
Robyn and Qrow friendship HECK YES
The Ruby mural!!!! The quiet little faith in her! The ironclad belief she has made a difference!
I didn’t think the portal was Ruby and co at first, I thought it Raven showing up while Qrow was brooding alone and it made me laugh
But Raven did show up, which then made me feel confused
I realize the idea was one unified kingdom against Salem but uh. Mistral is still fine isn't it?
THIS WILL BE THE DAY MY BELOVED
They even added concept art!
Real question: how did the Ruby muralist know what her boots look like? She was only visible from waist up in the broadcast!

RWBY: What If...? (Pt.1)
Part 2/Part 3
Jaune sat over the sand dune looking over the camp that belong to his fellow fighters with him in the crown. Behind him and stitching up his wounds, was Gillian Asturias, co-leader of CROWN and future Queen of Vacuo, well, once they overthrew the council, she would be Queen.
"You know... there's no need to worry yourself, it was for my own sake that killed those bandits," Jaune told her. "It wasn't for you exactly," Jaune told her.
Gillian looked at the back of Jaune's head with a raised brow, "really?" She asked with a raised brow.
Jaune shrugged, "It's just my nature," Jaune told her. "I'd rather fight with my sword than run away,"
"So, that's the only reason?" Gillian asked, "You fought 30 men, because it's not in your nature to run away?"
Jaune turned to look at her and Gillian looked right back at him, they stared at each other for only a moment before Jaune turned away. "Yeah... pretty much," Jaune replied. "Besides, I owed their leader some payback, and my memory of things is a bit unclear, I got caught up in the swordplay," Jaune finished.
Gillian smiled, "You were pretty amazing out there, and don't let anyone know I said this but you were better than Jax," Gillian said.
Jaune smiled a little hearing such praise from her, but then he looked back down to the campsite and his smile slowly faded.
"However, before the fight, and maybe even during it, there was something I couldn't get out of my mind," Jaune told her. "Compared to what you, Jax, and the others are trying to do, me fighting 30 bandits means nothing, not a damn thing," Jaune said somberly.
Gillian looked at him a bit bewildered that he would say such a thing, to her he did something that no one in the entire CROWN could ever do, for him to say that was nothing, Gillian knew that something deep must have been troubling Jaune.
"You, Jax, Carmine, and Bertilak, you all have something that you can stake your lives on, and I think that's amazing, I mean it, but compared to that purpose, even if I fight 30, 40, 50, or even 100 men, just seems like a random act," Jaune told her, a smile gracing his face.
Gillian looked at Jaune with wide eyes, "Jaune... I..." Gillian began, but she could not find the words, any words that would ease his mind.
Jaune just continued to look down at the campsite and sees the many fires down there, but from this distance, they look like little glow flies, dancing in the night. "Some view huh?" He asked.
"Huh?" She asked
"Marcus doesn't thin he's suited for this life, but still wants to fulfill his duty, but once it's over, he says he wants to own a diner, like his father, and Celine was rejected by a woman who she proposed to long ago, so she joined us in hopes that she would become famous and find a lover," Jaune told Gillian, "It seems like everyone has a dream, and looking over them from up here, it feels like I can see everyone's hopes and dreams flickering in the fires.
Gillian looked down to the campsite and looked at the fires and when she did, she saw all their members and soldiers smiling, drinking, and talking, and she began to see what Jaune saw in the flames.
Gillian smiled softly as she looked down at the flames, "Like a bonfire of dreams," she said.
Jaune smiled, loving how she had put it, it was poetic and reminded him of how his mother loved stories and poems and how she would always express words beautifully.
