two weeks ago i made this post after i finished playing gs1 and then got informed that one of my favorite scenes in Yomigaeru Gyakuten (Rise from the Ashes) had been altered. i'm sorry that i didn't respond to anyone on that post, but now i'm here to present the full scene, with screenshots.
this scene is triggered when you go to Mitsurugi's office for the first time, and you choose to inspect the bookcase. (i fucked up my timing for the first screenshot rip. sorry Akane-chan)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Akane: Uwa...are all of these case files!? Akane: They're slotted tightly all the way to the ceiling! There's even a ladder here. Naruhodou: ...that's weird. Since that guy is supposed to have a fear of earthquakes... Naruhodou: I really can't imagine him using such a dangerous bookcase like this one. Akane: It's no problem! Akane: There are really gigantic bolts fixing it firmly to the wall! Akane: What great power. I wonder if Mitsurugi-kenji-san did that? The screen flashes to Itonokogiri's laughing sprite for an instant. Naruhodou: (...for some reason. Itonoko-keiji's face came to mind...)
when i got to this scene playing the game, it meant everything to me. on top of checking up on Mitsurugi after earthquakes, Itonokogiri also took measures into his own hands to make sure his office would be a safe place for him in case of earthquakes...it made their relationship even more compelling to me.
it's also very important to me that it's Naruhodou picking up on this. playing through the game i always got the vibe that he noticed how close Mitsurugi and Itonokogiri are. this is just one more piece of evidence for that.
it had been made known to me, that in the English localization, they, for some reason, decided to erase Mitsurugi's known fear of earthquakes (which Naruhodou only knows bc he learned it from Itonokogiri!) and swap it for a...fear of heights? that has never existed in the original version of the games? and also the only time it was brought up in the English version at all??
i really don't understand why they did that. what was wrong with the original?? why invent a new fear out of thin air instead of using what's established?? what was the goal here???
there are numerous slight changes that the English localization has made that, when compiled together, really alters the vibe of the characters and how they interact with each other. but this is by far the most egregious change they've made that i've encountered (i've only played from gs1 and gs2, and i wasn't really paying attention to possible changes when playing through gs1).
maybe one day i'll make another post about the small changes they made (that are almost all at the expense of Itonokogiri...), but for now, here is the change that left me the most baffled.

Developed Psychic Ability and Death
Psychics in The X-Files aren't born with their ability-- they develop it:
Luther Lee Boggs, Beyond the Sea
Meeting the souls of his victims before his near death.
Tumblr media
Clyde Bruckman, Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose
Obsessing over the chance death of a celebrity.
Tumblr media
Robert Modell, Pusher
Dying from a sudden, aggressive brain tumor.
Tumblr media
Gerald Schnauz, Unruhe
Cracking under the pain of his sister's (and father's) death.
Tumblr media
John Lee Roche, Paper Hearts
Creating a connection with Mulder through his dead victims.
Tumblr media
Harold Spuller and his boss, Elegy
Impending death allows them to see the spirits of their bowling customers.
Tumblr media
Linda Bowman, Kitsunegari
Her dying brother's abilities connecting to and awakening her own.
Tumblr media
Philip Padgett, Milagro
Hyperfixating on Dr. Naciamento's death (ala Clyde Bruckman) and his confusion and displacement (ala Bruckman's psychotic foe.)
Tumblr media
Mulder, The Sixth Extinction
Breaking down and dying because of the over acceleration of his brain via an alien "source of life" artifact (though not technically caused by death, it's tied into the mytharc which is tied to Gibson Praise which is tied to psychic ability. To be explored in the future.)
Tumblr media
And lest she be forgotten:
Scully, Beyond the Sea/The Blessing Way/Elegy/A Christmas Carol/All Souls/Orison/Within/This Is Not Happening/etc.
Being faced with her father's posthumous spirit; and being visited by dying, dead, or returning souls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The principle applies for Maggie and Melissa Scully as well, though we are not privy to the inciting incidents behind both of their abilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This pattern remains the same throughout the series... with the glaring exceptions of Gibson Praise and William. Those exceptions, however, are the lynchpins ("the key to everything", if you will) that illustrate the connection between psychic ability in human beings and their shared but repressed alien DNA.

(Meta coming soon.)
Thank you for reading~
Enjoy!

hi hello really loved your ves and roche meta!!!! it's so rare to see people talk about their relationship despite ves being basically one of if not the only one person roche trusts wholeheartedly, so ty for sharing your thoughts!!!
and to add to what you already said about them. you can tell already how much these two care about each other but there's another thing that makes me um...CRY?? if you ask roche for help to fight in kaer morhen, he will refuse if ves dies and when he talks about her death, he looks so fucking devastated and sad like he's about to cry...here's the link if you didn't see: https://youtu.be/DUIdY9kpy0s?si=x060P_n8_-VUZGNS
it's such a minor detail but it shows how much roche cares for her and wants to keep her safe at all costs, because ves isn't just a soldier to him, she's his only family...his little sister/daughter that he loves so much.
horrible HORRIBLE fucking man who will turn the whole world upside down just to make sure his loved ones are safe and alive DEAR FCUKING GOD
but um...if you don't mind, i also want to hear your thoughts about geralt and roche's friendship 😌!! these two old man have such a weird and complicated friendship but it somehow works for them? i dunno, there's something about geralt being roche's some sort of guiden who's words roche values more than anyone, because he knows geralt will make a better judgement, he knows geralt is a better person, more than he will ever be.
also damn that man is truly a pathetic loser with only two friends because no one likes his ass lol 😔
Thank you!
I think that Geralt is someone that Roche feels a particular sort of kinship with. While it's true that most of the time they work together it's not personal as much as it is having roughly aligning goals, Roche does seem to at least enjoy Geralt's company. Regardless, the relationship is mostly transactional and tends towards being professional.
But I think that there's something in Geralt which Roche is able to identify very strongly with. Childhood abandonment, difficult upbringings, adopting and nurturing young girls in violence bc it's the only way they know how (Geralt with Ciri and in the books, Angoulême, and Roche with Ves and Anaïs.) In the case of Ciri and Anaïs in particular there are quite a few more parallels (last heir to a dying throne, valued for the ability to legitimize a claim to a throne more than who they are) which I think Geralt and Roche would both be at least passively aware of.
Geralt is one of the few people Roche will just drop everything for. He's a friend, and we know Roche views people he's close with strongly. Foltest was a father figure, Ves and the Blue Stripes are his family, etc. I have no doubts Geralt is in there too, in some complicated category which Roche won't ever name.

talkin about some dead woman walking plot things! coming up on two years of work on dmt and dww so i thought it'd be fun to give you a little insight into what to expect. stuck it under the cut for people who want to go in totally blind
doing dead woman walking is super fun because i mangled the fallout 4 plot to account for a neo-noir rewrite but far harbor is primed from the get-go to accommodate one, so the changes i make are more to accommodate character than being 'necessary' per se, the plot holds up fine without tampering. nick coming off the vanilla plot and nick coming off dead man talking are two slightly different characters. he's working with somebody perfectly fine with doing things 'the hard way' and three years of exposure have roughened up his edges a little. he's still ultimately a good, kind man, but what he perceives as 'good' is really taking some hits, especially in regard to what happens to gloria. she'll have to live with the choices she made, but for nick that's a hard thing to do when you're not used to living on your own terms. out of the frying pan, into the reactor
if dead man talking is nick coming to grips with being a fully realized person capable of self-actualization and thoughts and feelings, dead woman walking is him dealing with the consequences of throwing in with the kind of person he was obsessed with killing for 100 years. uh oh nicholas you're madly in love with somebody Nick Prime would want brutally murdered and will be tormented by this forever because of the deplorable circumstances of your creation. hope nothing else fucked up happens on this island or you'd be in really deep shit!

Age Is Mad
Bertha's final crime? According to Rochester, she was older than him by five years. Papa Roch and Rowland lied about her age too.
Lol, why?
I don't know, like, what is the point in Charlotte including this detail? Why is it there??? What has it got to do with anything? It's like she has self esteem issues regarding her age, as well as her looks, so makes her rival, the "bad" woman, older.
Richard was older than Bertha, which would then make him at least six years older than Rochester. I don't know that that's the case though. Jane clearly describes him as being of approximately the same age as Rochester "between thirty and forty". He'd have to be forty-four at the youngest.
Or else you have to accept he was younger looking than he was.

9, Mesothulas ^_^
9. Scene that first made you love (or hate) the character.
Mesothulas is in hardly any scenes, so it was mostly the lore surrounding him (e.g. that he was inspired by Aleister Crowley), @decepti-thots' writing (fic and meta), and @itonako's fanart (he's kitty!) that endeared him to me. Designing his HF version (which received the Nick Roche stamp of approval!!) also really helped me grok him.
But if pressed, I would also say any of the scenes in Sins where it becomes clear how much Mesothulas doted on Ostaros and adored Prowl. He's a loving parent and a hopeless romantic AS WELL AS an amoral mad scientist, what's not to love about that?!

Why is the Roche/Ciri ship always only crap for you all?
Hey, i once read a draco x apple fanfic. I have no room to judge anyone's ship and I don't think I ever did that (outside of private conversations). What i am judging is someone ruining the fandom experience for other people. If you really are as upset and hurt by people hating on your ship as you say, I'm sure you understand why people don't like you hating on their ship. (btw it's hilarious that you sent me hate for rorveth and cirys. Literally the only character included here that i even know is Ciri. If you sent me geraskier hate there would at least be context since i actually ship it, but i have absolutely no opinion on those ships you mentioned. I don't even know them) You've been told by others why they are annoyed by your asks and obviously it has no effect on you, so i won't bother repeating what they've already said, but i do occasionally love hearing myself talk so i wil still write a far longer response than i should So this isn't a hate response, it's a love letter to fandom. So here's what made being in a fandom so special to me:
The support.
Fandom to me is, at its core, strangers sharing their excitement, inspiring each other and admiring what other people do. When i started writing i was so self conscious, i couldn't sleep after posting a chapter because I was so anxious. And i received so much support even for works that are really not that great. There's something so wonderful about cheering others on and getting cheered on. That sort of open and heartfelt support is not something you experience in real life and it made some hard times much better for me. It's incredible knowing that people across the globe collaborate, send each other prompts or getting really excited about something someone else did.
2. The possibility to just…not engage in conversations i don't want to be in.
It's so freeing to have the option to block people of just not respond. There's always some sort of controversy or just some takes i don't like. How wonderful that i can just not look at those things
3. Getting to be creative and knowing it makes people happier
Your fic or art isn't brilliant? Who cares. It's so freeing to create something out of love, for people who love the same thing. I started writing for the first time since i was a child because of fandom. I dabbled in creating fanart (and realised the medium isn't for me, which is also great to find out), i wrote poetry (which I never wanted to do) and badly recorded songs (which i felt so self conscious about). Was it all good? Ha, absolutely not. But i got zo try it out and i wouldn't have done that without fandom. There is no external pressure to be good (or if there is pressure from other people to create and be good, there are always a ton of others telling you why this pressure is unfair and should be ignored). There are no grades, no deadlines. Just the love and joy of creating and sharing your creation. Or not sharing them, if that's what you want. Both is fine and that's the point
4. Seeing people of all skill levels share their works
And all of their art is beautiful and meaningful, no matter if they qre a master of their craft or someone who pickef up a pen for the first time to try out this medium
5. Seeing different interpretations
I don't like many of them but it's so interesting to see how others are interpreting something. That can be anything from the question of who's a top to some in depth meta analysis. People enjoy different things and it's so cool to see what they focus on
6. The people in general. I pretty much left the witcher fandom months ago (i tried writing for it again but it was so hard that I gave up) but through it, i met incredible people, some of who have become irreplaceable parts of my life and i am so thankful for fandom for bringing us together like this. When i was in the fandom, i got to know people are so talented, unbelievably creative, kind, funny, supportive and so many other wonderful things (even those i never talked to directly. If you left a comment on something i wrote or made my days brighter with your own creations, you are amazing and i appreciate you a lot)
Basically, fandom for me was an experience that brought me joy and a sense of community. It's on you to seek out the fandom experience you want to have. If you want that experience to be one of bitterness and hate, I'm really sorry for you. But more than anything I'm sorry for the people who you drag into this by harrassing them even after they blocked you. If you want to stew in bitterness over shipping a rarepair, that's your decision. But if other people want to enjoy the fandom in a more joyful way, then that should be their decision too and you don't get to take it away from them and ruin their love. Because ultimately that's what fandom is to me and i treasure the memory of that love more than I value the opinion of someone who apparently takes joy in trying (and hopefully failing) to take that love away

the rats for those headcanons lmao please and ty
RATS THEY'RE RATS THEY'RE THE RATS
Headcanon A:  realistic
Elfilis
They are very fluffy (technically canon guys look at them).
They feed by absorbing the energy around them.
Loud sounds don't hurt them because they're used to having huge ears. [*looks at Holly*/lh]
They don't use their ears to fly (they can float) but as a shield, to keep themself warm, or to heal.
They communicate telepathically.
Elfilin
He does has a teeny tiny bit of Elfilis' powers, which he's learning how to use
He won't grow up to be a proper space rat like Elfilis because he's only half of them :(
He is a toddler guys shut up /lh
Forgo
Oh man oh god what is realistic for Forgo,,
They feel cold to the touch
They also won't grow up to be a proper space rat :(
When they talked about the "Great One" they were actually referring to Elfilis in their complete form, not themself.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
Elfilis
They get drunk off bleach. They are not fully aware of this.
They get money by beating up Meta Knight at the colosseum of the I will not stop repeating it (now that they were forcefully shoved into a society they need to have a source of income)
They're far from clumsy, but their tallness and ear size causes them to move pretty awkwardly in the tiny Waddle Dee-sized spaces. They hate this, since usually their movements are full of elegance and grace.the meaning
They are super squishy and tend to go splat on the floor when they're very tired. They also have no bones.
They find rats as disgusting as humans since they're often compared to one. If you call them a rat in an affectionate way you have a teeny tiny chance at survival, otherwise say your last prayers.
When Elfilis was like a baby Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit had the dumbest fucking title ever
They popcorn just like Elfilin
Tumblr media
Elfilin
Do I have funny headcanons for Elfilin?
When he reaches a breaking point he repeats something he heard Elfilis say, often a swear. (little guy swearing isnt that funny /sarcasm)
Forgo
If left out in the sun they will melt like jelly or icecream
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

For the ask meme: 🍒🪞🎶💫? For any oc(s) you want!
Ask link:
Hey! Ty for the ask! 🪞💫 were answered, so:
(Long post incoming)
🍒 -
Dazor - Well, the easiest friend for him to get along with would probably be Kirby, once Dazor realizes Kirby’s not going to backstab him at first opportunity. Gooey and Elfilin he'd be close with too, Dazor appreciates that despite their dark origins, they got good hearts (even if Gooey is quite scatter-brained). I can’t see him getting along with Zan though - her refusal to respect anyone beyond her circle (and eventually Kirby) would absolutely rub him the wrong way. DMK he’d try to avoid. Daroach he just wants to sTOP TRYING TO STEAL HIS STUFF, thank you very much. He and Magolor don’t like each other too much either - Dazor dislikes Magolor’s mischief and over-the-top, un-genuine nature (not to mention his infamous betrayal), and Magolor would think Dazor’s too boring and that it’s a shame he won’t share any Ancient related knowledge. In a similar vein, Dazor would… not get along with Marx, to say the least. For the other friends, Dazor would be on positive or at least neutral terms.
Ao-Yong - Their laidback nature would allow them to get along with just (or at least avoid conflict with) about all of the dream friends. They probably wouldn’t be too fond of Susie though, while they can sympathize with her struggles caused by the Ancients' legacy, they find it much harder to sympathize with the part of colonizing and destroying others' lives for her and her company benefit, having seen that story play out time and time again.
Ky: *Struggling to think here* I can see them enjoying sparring with Meta Knight and the Mage Sisters! I'd also see them being interested in Elfilin given their connection to Elfilis.
🎶- Oh god, this is probably one of the harder questions for me bc my brain just... doesn't really connect music with my ocs? But I do got a few things:
Dazor - The first song is the Aviary Village shop theme from Sky: Children of the Light. It's a relaxing, peaceful song associated with rebuilding and renewal, which is great for Dazor's story. And the second song - whiplash incoming - is Hell’s comin’ with me - Poor Man’s Poison. Pro tip: Dazor is a people-pleaser, he's conflict-avoidant and would rather not fight, much less kill. But if you choose to hurt him or his loved ones, he WILL remember, and he will NOT forget (This will be plot relevant down the line).
Ao-Yong - Their battle theme would probably be heavily based off of Landia's theme and, I don't know, Sekiro's Divine Dragon and/or Elden Ring's Elden Beast. A regal, alien, powerful theme that tells you that you should not be fighting them.
Ky - they can have a leifmotif/theme based off Landia's theme and/or Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit due to the connections with their owners, maybe more the latter since Ao has the stronger connection to Landia here.

I use to have a crush list on my first pinned post but I ended up deleting it to save space and sense then have been pretty indecisive about bringing it back just because I didn't feel it was useful information and the concept was too broad and more and more excuses of the like.

I think a lot about the fact that Itonokogiri knew about Mitsurugi's seismophobia but didn't know what actually happened during DL6, just that that's the case where Mitsurugi lost his dad
and the fact that he said that Mitsurugi forbid him to look into DL6
and the fact that during the four years that they'd known each other, he connected the dots. figured out that the reason Mitsurugi has a fear of earthquakes, why he hates criminals, and why he became a prosecutor are all connected to that case. and yet. he never pried further, never looked into it. he knew as much as Mitsurugi would let him know and stopped there.
thinking a lot about the fact that Itonokogiri had access to the file room the entire time. he could've so easily gone in there with Naruhodou and Mayoi to look into the case as well. to finally learn what happened. but he didn't. he let them go in there by themselves. he didn't want to know. because Mitsurugi didn't want him to know.
thinking a lot about the fact that Mitsurugi and Itonokogiri have both described each other as someone they can trust to other people. and how it goes unsaid between them. because it doesn't need to be.

Hi!! Sorry for asking but I can't get blorbos out of my head and I need to annoy someone.
What do you think of Roche and Ves's relationship? Could Ves possibly turn against Roche and overthrow him? I still can't get over that quest with Milfgaard where Ves straight up disobeyed and maybe at some point questioned his leadership in her mind. It's sad to think that the most important person in Roche's life could just left him all alone and now I'm torturing myself by thinking about it :,)
Anon I think about the Vernon and Ves relationship so much you have no idea. The main thing that strikes me about it is the odd undefined space that they exist in, largely as a result of their circumstances. As commander and soldier, the other aspects of their relationship are there but sort of silent. To try and define it could potentially be an abuse of power on Roche's part. So we have to question as the audience: Is it father/daughter? Older brother/little sister? Potential lovers? We don't know, but we do know that these two are attached to each other, nearly inseparable.
Roche rescued a teenage Ves and she's been at his side for years. They've seen their king die, their country fall and possibly rise again, they've lost the Blue Stripes, their friends. Their community. All gone. But after that they were always together.
That one blip of separation and disagreement in the Witcher 3 is there. But it's not a failing of care or loyalty on either's part, not really. Roche was (necessarily) in a position where he had to keep alliances with Nilfgaard a secret. From what we've seen the only people who knew about that whole arrangement at the time were Thaler and Emhyr. Could Roche have been open with Ves about this? Maybe. But he kept it quiet, so we don't know.
Ves' side in that is also worth talking about. From her perspective, Roche is abandoning Temerians to Nilfgaard which is distinctly out of character for him. But its also a situation which directly mirrors her own background. A village being razed, it's people murdered? The only thing that changes is instead of it being Scoia'tael attacking it's the Nilfs. Of course she'd be upset by what looks like Roche's negligence from her perspective. She doesn't know that he's doing what he can to maintain a fragile tentative alliance.
Of course the interactions surrounding that gives the most credence to the father and daughter interpretation of their relationship. Between Vernon trying to ground Ves the first time, the complaining about what she's wearing not because it's tits out for Temeria but because he was afraid she'd be hurt, and then grounding her again. One thing is clear: he cares for Ves. A lot. He's terrified he'd lose her.
And if you're worried about her leaving, I'll remind you of what happens after. Vernon tries to go to Kaer Morhen alone, and Ves doesn't let him. She follows him, that whole issue with the village more or less behind them. They go back to Temeria together, Ves gets brought into the fold where killing Radovid is concerned. And if Geralt chooses it, they can even see their kingdom live again, even if they have oversight from Nilfgaard.
What happens to them after? We don't know. But I imagine they wouldn't separate, not unless they had to. They love each other too much, even if they don't get to say that aloud.

1, 4, and 14 for the asks to spread love <3
Thank you for the ask <3
A fanon characterisation that you love
I love the idea that Eskel is gay, and that the Succubus he talks about in Witcher 3 was actually an Incubus.
4. Link to a great meta you’ve read
There aren't that many meta posts I've read and remember, but this one about Triss, Phil and the Lodge is great, and resonates a lot with how I view Triss.
14. A ship or character that you started liking because of someone else (give them/their works a shout out!)
I started liking Foltest/Roche because of Major Design Flaw by Anoke, the whole series is fantastic and coincidentally one of the parts was released right as I started playing Witcher 2, which was one of the reasons I gave it a shot. A close second is Peace Tied by Bomberqueen17, which is one of the reasons I ship Iorveth/Roche.

Rochester's Origin Story
Tumblr media
Sophia Petrillo would deal with this worthless assclown, the old Sicilian way.
Picture it, Yorkshire, England, fifteen years prior to the events of the main plot. Mr Rochester, the owner of Thornfield Hall, is in a pickle: he has two sons; Rowland, the older one and Edward, the younger one. His greed abhors the notion of dividing the estate between them; yet he loathes the idea of the younger son being a poor man. And so, a solution comes to him one moonless, sleepless night--he will find a rich bride for Edward.
Okay, I made that part about the solution and the moonless sleepless night up, but come on. It's not completely out-of-the-world that a good marriage would be sought for a younger son, i.e. not the heir. To be sure, the Rochester estate was not entailed, unlike, for example, the Ingram estate, where Blanche's brother Theodore inherited everything--he's a lord, too. Still, the fact remains that he was the younger son. I read somewhere, I think it may have been someone's blog (not Tumblr), that the reason Richard calls Edward "Fairfax" is because he was the second son. When Richard met him, his older brother still lived, so yeah, it makes sense. The Rochester name would then be inherited with the estate. Mrs Fairfax tells Jane at the beginning that "the land has belonged to the family time out of mind". So they must have kept the property together, or they wouldn't have lasted. Or else they killed their younger sons... OH MY GODS!
Tumblr media
It's amazing how doing a recap makes one's muses dance. I even had to change the meme. I was getting tired of the same old one.
Where was I, so yeah, a bride with some money would not be an unreasonable path for the second son. Why there is no word about Edward getting a job, I can only speculate. Whether it was not on Papa Rochester's mind, or not on Edward's mind, or whether Edward picks and chooses which facts to reveal to Jane while telling the story--because Jane, who does honest work for a living, would not be happy to hear the rest--is anyone's guess.
I will say that I believe that Papa Rochester was a stingy bastard. For one, this fact can be corroborated by others and two, it explains so much about Edward.
Papa Rochester had an old acquaintance, Mr Mason, a planter and merchant in the West Indies. He had a vast fortune and two children, a daughter and a son. It was to this daughter young Edward was promised. She came with thirty thousand pounds. And so Edward sailed to Jamaica, courted the lady, who was very beautiful ("in the style of Blanche Ingram" as he says, by which he just means tall and dark-haired--features that caused Charlotte to have an inferiority complex, perhaps?) and they got married and settled in Jamaica, in Spanish Town.
Anyone wonders if Papa Roch could not find him a match closer to home? No? Just me? Wonder with me, readers. Was there no suitable bride with money anywhere in England? Or Wales or Scotland or Ireland? Or heck, even Europe? Why Jamaica? Of all places. Why the other side of a fucking ocean? Did Papa Roch hate his younger son so much, he wanted him as far away from him as possible? Or could he not find a woman for him on the British Isles because no family wished to wed their daughter to Edward? Was the house of Rochester an unpopular one?
Anyhow, Edward did become the heir to the Rochester estate after all. Rowland died childless, Papa Roch kicked the bucket as well, and, four years after his wedding to Bertha, Edward found himself the owner of a vast estate--with a very inconvenient wife. Now Edward is the one in the pickle. He's expected to return to England, to take over the running of Thornfield Hall, but what is he going to do about that Creole of a wife?
And so, a solution comes to him on a moonlit tropical Caribbean night--he will take her to Thornfield and lock her in the attic.
That's not his story, obviously. The account he gives to Jane is that of a suffering, tortured Byronic hero, chained to a wife who is mad. You know how it goes. Only after the honeymoon was over did he realise the truth. He found out Bertha's mother was a lunatic, shut up in an asylum. He found out there was a younger brother who was a complete dumb idiot. He found out Rowland and Papa Roch knew about all this, but concealed the fact from him, for they only thought about the thirty thousand pounds. The whole world conspired against Edward, the whole world deceived him.

Hi! If you don't mind me hop on the train of asks that's been going on - I want to ask one thing.
You say: 'it doesn't matter if Roche is racist or not. It doesn't really solve the politics of the factional warfare', but how exactly it doesn't? Is it not important, if the extermination of elves is not motivated by racism, and how it can furthermore make him realize how evil his job was pre-tw3 and change for the better?
From what I've seen in your Ves meta, you seem to be putting more weight and value on her, in regards of her motivations, than you do with Roche. Which seems to me like motivation does matter to you. I just don't understand how it can't be the case with him.
They're both pretty much do the same job, and they're a part of the racist military, but both of them are not motivated by racial bigotry.
And if you're going to make an argument 'but Ves didn't choose her job and doesn't take pleasure working under him', keep in mind that if Roche did offer Ves to serve in the military, the decision to stay was decided herself:
Ves: I'm a soldier because I do it well.
Geralt: Ever dreamed of a different life?
Ves: Finch, our marksman, once tried farming. But he just didn't have the hands for it.
Bet he'd get me right between the eyes from eighty paces off.
Ves: A hundred. I've tried cooking, darning, smiling like a doll, serving beer in a tavern. None of my things.
Her not being racist doesn't resolve the conflict she's been part of, but it can essentially make her reconsider her actions and future goals. Same with Roche.
If we're also talking about their moral compassion, and how Ves exceeds Roche in that sense, it's worth considering that the whole situation with the village - was the only instants of insubordination. She disobeyed because in her eyes Roche was acting out of character. Not because she was questioning his leadership. Even Geralt is surprised and doesn't understand why, an idealist like him, would not help those villagers? And that's obviously not because he didn't care. But because he had to maintain the fragile alliance with Nilfgaard. And Ves was not aware of that. After the whole situation is resolved, Ves still remains at his side. She didn't leave (although honestly the quest writing was dogshit. Roche should've told Ves the plan way earlier. She's his most important person and second in command, whoever wrote that quest).
Roche is a terrible guy, you can see it even at first glance, but if Ves was mindfully judging his leadership, then why didn't she do it before? Why didn't she leave him when Roche officially disbanded the Blue Stripes? Abandoning those innocent people wasn't the only terrible thng he has ever done, and if Ves intended to lead her own warfare without him, then she would've done it by now. Maybe she stayed because Roche is her only family and a father figure, but I don't think she would put her feelings above her morality.
She's as Roche a soldier. A soldier by will. And as him she burdens a lot of sins on her back. But I think I got carried away.
The point I was trying to make: Roche and Ves are both soldiers and share mutual sins, but it doesn't mean that both of them can't make up for the mistakes and change for the better. And the way they can redeem themselves - is to make the military less fascist.
My ask is a bit choppy but hope I got the point across. Not trying to be mean or rude. Just wanted to share my thoughts.
Thanks these are all great points! To get right into it I do actually think my arguments have been inconsistent, I’ll try to clear it up here. Also, I think that the post you’re referencing where I talk about Ves’ moral differences to Roche is almost a year old, and I’ve since evolved some of my thoughts on that, so I’m not surprised that it contradicts my more recent answers, sorry for the confusion though, maybe I should delete older asks. Also, however serious my tone may sound here, I'm not trying to correct or argue with you!! Pls don't think that, I'm just trying to make my stances on things as clear as I can.
TLDR attempt: the blue stripes upheld and inflicted racial oppression, to me that makes them racists, to others it doesn't because the racist actions were not motivated by racist beliefs. I disagree, but either way, they could still receive character growth and repent (highly doubt CDPR would do this, or do it well). However, writing that story would need a great deal of care, and hopefully the victim's voices, viewpoints, and empowerment would be centered, not the oppressor's past justifications - however one may define or interpret those justifications. (although it would still need to be discussed, esp in preventative work ie: how do we change societal norms and opinions so that this never happens again?)
and a more full explanation below the cut:
On the question of the racism perpetrated by the Blue Stripes (HAVE to mention that I don’t ever consider myself an authority here, im white, im an american, thats a very skewed perspective that is worthy of interrogation) what I meant more was that I don’t think the /debate/ over Roche’s status as a racist is constructive, because it always focuses on various definitions of racism or in-universe logic as opposed to the actual narrative, or intention of the writers.
Is it not important, if the extermination of elves is not motivated by racism, and how it can furthermore make him realize how evil his job was pre-tw3 and change for the better?
I think what I've failed to articulate is that I don't see anyone arguing motive or backstory, and neither am I. Roche's (and Ves) stated and observable character motivations behind his crimes were the protection of his country and those that he cares for. That’s the story we have to work with, that would most realistically be the groundwork for a redemption arc. It WOULD be different and matter if he was motivated and called to action by bigoted hate, but we know that he is not, so let’s not worry about that hypothetical for now.
With that in mind, it’s the debate over whether or not to label him a racist that I find to be leading to a dead end. I personally think that no matter Roche's motivations, he found it within himself to justify racially motivated war crimes, and that makes him a racist. I’ve seen other people say ‘no, he’s not a racist, he just ended up doing racist things because he wanted to protect his country, and it was impossible for him not to fight back against the Scoiatael.’ I don't agree, yet if we take either route, I think we both end up being met with the same questions of:
How would one go about delivering reparations for, or even just addressing a history of war crimes such as this one? How do ex-fascists seek recovery in the real world and what would it look like here? Why would Temeria, not Nilfgaard be a better ally to non-humans post-war? What would be the most respectful way to structure a story that tried to repair temeria's relationship with non-humans given how heavy and personal some of this subject matter is? How would the generational gap between Roche and Ves affect their respective character arcs? Is that even a story worth telling? What would a sympathetic tone to a redemption arc for these two be telling the audience about fascists?
like, as I mentioned, I think the overall narrative surrounding Roche’s character is one of a traumatized, propaganda-ridden solider from an impoverished background - there’s some probably sympathy to be found there, there’s potential character growth and discussion to be had, but to me … why does also acknowledging that his character’s past is one of ongoing racism change anything or render the redemption arc more or less distasteful? (this is not really me arguing that he NEEDS or deserves a redemption arc, just talking about the questions posed) It seems like people want to keep the ‘racist’ label off of fictional characters who aren't explicit villains so that positive discussions of them are less uncomfortable, but here, we’re still talking about someone who would likely have sat through a genocide so what are we trying to define away? Roche would need to atone for his racist actions, and is that not his own racism?
side note: I'm talking about myself here, I was sort of vague in my last ask where I stated that I believe Roche is a racist, and I should not have been.
Does that make sense? Idk. I’m mostly agreeing with you, and i’m not out to argue that a redemption arc would be indistinguishable in tone if Roche and Ves were secretly bigots, or that it would be equally realistic to achieve without feeling forced. It would be different, it would change this conversation, change how their characters were written on a technical level, how the framing of an acceptance of wrongdoing came about. But they weren’t, at least not as far as canon has shown us. I’m only saying that when I call Roche is a racist, and someone else doesn’t, a lot of the time we’re still going to end up with the same general route to growth and reformation for him and Ves or maybe even Temeria as a whole, because their backstories are mostly set in stone now.
Oh god this is getting long, ok onto Ves before I try to wrap up: She’s in the Blue Stripes by her own volition, you’re totally right and I wasn’t really addressing that correctly before. I think the reason I separate her a bit from Roche is that I feel she’s more of a commentary on the children of fascists/minors with hateful beliefs, or the products of second-hand propaganda - and vile as these younger generations are, their reformation feels more achievable through maturity and the development of personal morals.
She joins the Blue Stripes at a very young age after suffering horrific trauma. Fascist rhetoric coming from the man who stepped up to protect and arm her was probably very easily to adopt, especially because she’s coming from a place of privilege herself as a human. Fascists and hate groups and incels or whatever LOVE to make young social outcasts feel welcome because they recognize them as easy prey, and when these ‘young social outcasts’ have an existing bias of privilege - they’re white, they’re a man, ect - it’s scary how easy it is to indoctrinate them sometimes. Not saying this is play by play what Roche did, there’s no reason to believe that he’s lying about taking her in because he wanted her to be safe and nothing else, but the metaphorical shoe fits in my opinion. She is after all, not his daughter, but his very useful soldier.
I could go on and on about Ves’ reaction to Morril vs her fellow Blue Stripes, or the eye for an eye quest, but honestly she’s such a minor character that Id just be filling in gaps with head cannons and speculation about her slightly more progressive/thoughtful viewpoints, but I'm trying not to do that here. Pretty much everything I said in this post about Roche or ‘the blue stripes’ applies to her in my opinion. She’s a perpetrator of racial oppression, and her future growth would need to revolve around undoing that damage, while unpacking internal bias such as underlying bigotry would provide the framework and tone - for Ves this would probably be more specific to her relationship with Roche? But again this is hard to speculate with minor characters.
GOD sorry this is too long. ok damn I hope that clears up some of the contradiction and vagueness that you picked up in my earlier posts, but also maybe this is just an absurd amount of word vomit. Either way! I appreciate you sharing your insight, thanks for reaching out!
