(okay maybe I'm being optimistic about this being a oneshot... god knows I can't shut up when it comes to queer feels and grief)

come close (let me be home) - a Buddie Bridgerton au with Eddie as Viscount Anthony Bridgerton and Buck as Kate Sharma overseeing Maddie finding a new husband.

you're where i wanna go - Buddie historical au that is set mostly in the 1900's with some travels back to 1899, and forward to 1969. Buck and (single, childless, never been married) Eddie meet in 1899 when Buck is traveling after Maddie leaves. They are later separated and Buck marries Lucy (for reasons that have nothing to do with love and everything to do with queerplatonic goodness). Years later Eddie returns with Christopher...

with my heart in my lap - Twylexis historical au. Alexis and Twyla get together in August 1939, just before Canada enters WWII. Alexis leaves for college but returns almost immediately because teachers, students, etc have left the school to join the war. When she comes home Twyla isn't there. Alexis goes traveling around and ultimately lands in New York. While browsing a junk shop she comes across a necklace she gave to Twyla when they got together and begins a search to find her lost love.

I don’t know about you all, but I’m struggling to get in the holiday spirit this year. It’s been a rough year for a lot of people, I think. So I thought, why not share some winter/holiday fics and encourage people to do the same? So the rules are simple. Lmaoooo the TWELVE MINUTE VOICE NOTE I sent you already gave you more info about this than I think anyone other than @ships-to-sail @celeritas2997 and @rmd-writes is privy to. BUT.

For those of you who aren’t in the middle of the Venn diagram between RWRB and Schitt’s Creek, a few years back I wrote a 53k canon divergence breakup/reconciliation fic that was dubbed “angstapalooza” while I was writing it. And based on people’s reactions… it earned the moniker. (It’s also, despite my overall reputation in SC as a smut/kink peddler, become The Work people associate with me, apparently. Or as @indestructibleheart put it: “mj being seen as someone who only writes angst is like how nick is gonna go down in history for playing gay royals. it's not their fault their angst fics just happen to be very memorable, but they actually have a full imdb of other roles.“ 😂😂😂

SO. When, halfway through writing the actor AU, I had a sudden idea for a multi-chapter canon divergence breakup/reconciliation fic… well. The appellation seemed appropriate. It also immediately terrified the RWRB/SC Venn diagrammers 😂

I really do just need to sit down and, like, focus on this one, because it’s by far my longest-languishing WIP. But here’s the start of the pitch: canon divergent from Rio, they start hooking up much earlier, and break up—spectacularly and angrily—a couple of months before Philip’s wedding. Cakegate is no longer antagonism and UST, it’s two very recent very hurt exes having to play the diplomatic bullshit in the public eye while seeing each other for the first time since breaking up.

There’s a prologue in media res that covers cakegate, then we flash back to Rio and see the progression of their relationship (before and after cakegate) from there. Angst with a happy ending, and many delicious things on the way I won’t spoil right now.

As a little treat, have the (heartbreaking!!) end of the prologue:

Later, what Alex will hate himself for the most isn’t the absolute waste of $75,000 worth of dessert. It won’t be the heartbroken look on Martha’s face, or the disappointed expression on his mom’s when he gets home, or the diplomatic shitstorm the whole thing threatens to kick off.

No, what Alex will hate himself for the most is that when they fall to the floor, Henry’s hands find their way to Alex’s hips, gripping tight enough that his fingers will probably leave bruises later—and just for a moment, it feels like coming home.

I talked about this one here but have a little snippet because I genuinely love this fic. I just keep getting distracted by ooh-shinies

“I think I’m into Henry.”

“Right, no, I got that part somewhere in between hearing how pretty he is when he cries and you waxing rhapsodic about how he has, and I quote, ‘thighs that could crush a watermelon or, like, hang off a pole or something’.”

Alex blinks at her, confused. “What? I didn’t say anything about his thighs.”

“Not today.”

Two words should not be able to be that damning. He does vaguely recall saying that, actually, a few weeks after they moved in together and Alex had come home to find Henry in shorts for the first time.

Which, okay. It’s possible Alex has been ignoring a few signs. Big signs. Twelve foot tall signs that are so neon you kind of have to wonder if they’re radioactive.

I don't think I have ever published something worthy of that, but I would be very much open to it! I would be extremely flattered.

R: Which writers (fanfic or otherwise) do you consider the biggest influence on you and your writing?

Oh, man. Well, you, for one. You inspire me all the time with your beautiful words and also your encouragement. @rmd-writes is a huge influence in the sense that she gives me horrible (wonderful) ideas. @stereopticons, @hgejfmw-hgejhsf, and @blackandwhiteandrose make me better all the time. @lilythesilly encouraged and influenced sooo many of my SC fics. @nontoxic-writes taught me how to use beloved moments to inflict pain lmfao. As far as published authors go, I think my style was been influenced in a formative sense by Lemony Snicket. So much of how I write introspection is... I mean, not modeled after him, but I can see how he impacted young Stevie as a blossoming writer lol. Also Suzanne Collins, probably.

Day 2 - Read a fic in a new fandom

Choosing which fandom was actually the easiest part considering the uncanny amount of crossover between the SC - 911:LS - RWRB fandoms on this site (at least amongst the users I follow). For this prompt I’ve chosen Schitt’s Creek. I absolutely love this show but have never ventured into reading fic for it so now seems like a good time to take a small dive in ☺️ Since I’ve read the Tarlos and Firstprince editions of this series I already knew this one was going to be sweet, funny and hot 🔥 And oh what a delightful treat this was for my Sunday afternoon, I had SO much fun with this. I would highly recommend a read of all 3. Rae you are an absolute gem!

I loved the way it was written, going back and forth from present time to the past and how the reader discovers David’s fall into addiction and his struggle to stay sober and how his sobriety becomes so important to him; how he grew from that and how he finally reaches a place where he can love himself and accept being loved by someone. Fanfic Saturday

Rule: post a fic that you’re proud of!

Just under the wire, I’m posting a fic that I’m proud of writing. I think I’m proud of all of them (that’s how I know I’m ready to put it out in the world: “I am no longer ashamed of this draft,” I think, and sometimes that comes right down to the wire as I’m cleaning it up on ao3, mere seconds before I hit post.)

So technically I’d like to post a link to my 50 fics and call it a night but I’ll follow the rules.

Unsaid and Done was a fic I wrote because I was struggling with another fic and making words was hard. But I got a prompt and something in my writing brain just clicked. I wrote all of it in a weekend (if you know me, this is not a thing I do…even the weekend writing part is rare lol) and I knew exactly what I wanted.

It’s a tough topic, grief, but I love how it turned out as warm and sweet and a real celebration of David and Patrick’s love. I also managed metaphors and themes and layers, somehow; they appeared like magic, so I can’t be mad at that.

I write comedy and I like comedy and I’m always going to try to work comedy into my stories, even the ones about grief or chronic pain or aphasia, so don’t let the subject matter frighten you.

I’m in my feels now so please read Unsaid and Done or any of my other SC fics and let me know what you thought. Comments and kudos are another source of pride ;) and I’m always proud to hear from you.

This chaotic passage from (Un)professional Services, the Tarlos professional services AU I wrote with @welcometololaland (really this entire scene, but this passage demonstrates the vibe well - I don’t think of myself as a funny writer, so I’m proud of this scene!):

TK is surprised that Carlos hasn’t simply walked away from this chaos – and from him – at this point.

“I’m taking Carlos to my room,” he announces, taking Carlos’ hand. “C’mon, this way.”

“Do you still have an open door policy for TK?” he can hear his dad ask his mom behind them.

“No, Owen, TK is almost 30 so I don’t make him leave his door open if he has someone in there. Sweetie, there’s a whole box of those condoms from the office in—”

TK stops. “Oh my god! I’m not having sex with Carlos!”

Everyone looks at him in shock.

“Right now,” he amends.

I don’t write much angst, but I broke my heart writing baby TK in Precious Love (actually, I broke my heart writing most of this fic)

“You and I will still live here. But your dad won’t.”

TK doesn’t understand. Why doesn’t Dad want to live with him anymore? Is it because he leaves his Lego on the floor?

“Dad?” TK blinks. His eyes feel hot and itchy and his heart is beating really fast.

“I’m sorry, TK. Your mom is right. It’s better for us if I don’t live here anymore, but I promise that I still love you. It’s just going to be better this way.”

“But I want you to live here. With us! I promise I’ll be quiet when you sleep and won’t wake you up. And I promise to pick up my Lego. And I won’t leave my shoes in the doorway. And—” TK sniffs and rubs at his eyes with the back of his fist.

“Tyler, honey, it’s not anything you’ve done,” his mom says. Her voice sounds wobbly.

“Mommy, tell him not to go!” he cries.

From despite it all:

TK only breaks the kiss when his lungs are aching for air, resting their foreheads together. He peppers gentle kisses across Carlos’ jaw and down his neck, following a familiar path, using each kiss to write his love into his boyfriend’s skin, as if doing so will etch it there permanently, indelibly; a tattoo to match the mark Carlos has left on TK’s entire state of existence. Carlos cups his cheek as he looks up at him and the sheer fondness of his gaze has TK’s heart twisting in his chest as he stares back up at Carlos and wonders if he can’t just stay on his knees forever.

The first press of their lips together is gentle, almost chaste, but Alex slips his other hand around Henry’s back pulling him closer and Henry finds the soft dip of Alex’s waist inside his open coat, and when they kiss again, Alex parts his lips for him. He tastes sweet from the dessert but there’s something more, something unique to Alex that Henry wants to chase. He deepens the kiss, tangling his fingers in the curls at the base of Alex’s neck, losing himself in the slide of their tongues together and the press of Alex’s teeth as he tugs on Henry’s lower lip. When Henry pulls Alex closer so that there’s no space between them, kissing him thoroughly, as if there’s nothing more he needs in that moment than Alex and the feel of his mouth against his own, Alex makes a noise in the back of his throat that Henry swallows greedily. They part, breathless; minutes or hours later, Henry doesn’t know and frankly, he doesn’t care, all he can think about is the fact that he wants to do that again and never stop. 

He rests his forehead against Alex’s. “Hi,” he says on an exhale.

I’m so so proud of to the victor, the spoils (and its prequel). I can’t share my favourite passages from those fics without spoiling them, so I’ll give you this exchange with my beloved Bri instead:

Brianna has a coffee waiting for him when he arrives. “You’re a gem, Bri, what would I do without you?”

“Flounder aimlessly for a bit and then die a slow, uncaffeinated death probably.”

“That’s dark,” he says, taking a long sip of his coffee. 

“So, did you get the win?” she asks, looking over Alex with a quizzical expression on her face. 

“Of course I fucking did, Fox should have listened to me and withdrawn his application. I don’t know why he insisted on running it, he’s infuriating. The entire application was a waste of time.”

“Mmhmm,” Bri cocks her head and raises an eyebrow at him. 

“What? Why are you looking at me like that?”

“That’s not the tie you were wearing this morning, Alex. Looks kind of boring to me,” Bri smirks at him and walks out of his office. 

Alex looks down. Fuck. He’s been wearing Henry’s tie.

This is one of the first times I read my own writing and thought, “I really love this”, from it’s just for snow:

When David stops talking, his voice is scratchy; he feels flayed from the inside out. He’s never bared so much of himself to anyone before, not like this. He prefers to only let people see the broadest brushes of himself, to keep them at a distance that won’t allow them to see the individual brushstrokes that make up David Rose. He doesn’t know why, but talking to Patrick in the dark, from the safety of his cocoon of blankets – it feels safe – Patrick feels safe.

2. Why do you write fanfiction?

I was saying to someone recently that I love fandom and fanfiction because it extends the life of these fictional worlds that we fall in love with. With fandom, any tv show is longer than six seasons. Any book is longer than a single book... BUT that doesn't really answer the question because I don't write fic for every fandom that I enjoy and participate in otherwise, so... Honestly? I don't know where it comes from. I never know what characters are gonna pitch a tent in the part of my brain that generates all these ideas. It's a connection I make with the characters (she says, as if they're real fucking people). They just decide to live here, and, once they do... I write because they won't shut the fuck up if I don't. So, there's that, and there's also the community that I just love being a part of. IDK, man. It's all just very special to me.

4. Are there any writers that inspire you?

Bro (gn), you know you do. Plz, MJ. You and so many other writers in my current fandom and previous fandoms have inspired me to write. I mean, @nontoxic-writes, @lilythesilly, @stereopticons, @blackandwhiteandrose, @sarahlevys, @dinnfameron, @fishyspots (miss u bb), @ratchet (also miss you), @wordthieve, @rmd-writes, and my new BFF, @hgejfmw-hgejhsf!? There are too many to name tbh. I have been so fortunate to be surrounded by soooooo much talent. For fuck's sake, @designatedgrape made me give a shit about baseball. BASEBALL! I cannot believe. There are so many authors whose work leaves me feeling super inspired and wanting to write. You've all made me better at stringing words together through your writing. Also blowing a kiss to Lemony Snicket.

25. Have you ever daydreamed about side adventures/spin-offs from your fic? Tell us about them!

There are a couple spin-off fics that I wish I could download straight from my brain without having to write them, lol. In the 'The Outside Edge' universe, for example, there's a whole thing in my head where Stevie runs into Ruth—her former skating rival—at Nationals and they fall in love. Also Patrick's POV of AWSTRI(ATW) and David's POV of my first SC fic.

How many fics have you written?

When did you publish your first fic on AO3?

February 2021

Describe your writing process from “Oh, I have an idea” to pushing publish on AO3. 

Basically once something sparks my imagination - a prompt, a tweet, a line of dialogue, something a friend has said - I go from that to saying to a friend/s “but what if—” or if I’m lucky, the entire plot springs to mind and I try and jot at least some of it down before I lose it, usually in someone’s DMs or a group chat cos it’s most convenient. I’ll copy those notes and any brainstorming that may have happened with friends into a google doc and once I’m ready to write, I use those notes as my initial outline. Sometimes I add more notes, sometimes I just write, it depends on the fic and my intentions for how long/complex it’ll be. 

The actual writing varies depending on time available/mood/whether the words are working. I do a lot of writing on my phone cos it’s convenient and I can write anywhere - on public transport, while dinner is cooking, from the bath tub.

For a longer fic, I’ll sometimes have a friend read along as I write, or I share snippets with some friends - that validation helps keep me going! It also helps to know that certain things are hitting the way I want them to. 

I tend to edit as I go, often editing the parts I’ve written before I start writing again. But once I’m done, I try and edit as if I’m betaing someone else’s work and then, depending on the fic and my mood, either have someone beta it or, more often than you’d think for someone who does a lot of beta work for others, just hit publish — once I come up with a title!! Titles are usually the trickiest part for me, quite often I have everything ready to go on ao3 and am sitting there trying to think of a title so I can post. 

Tell me about your most recent fic? What do you love about it? Is there anything you think you could have done better?

My most recent fic isn’t for Schitt’s Creek (I’m currently writing for three fandoms). But my most recent Schitt’s Creek fic is serendipity - a 601 word drabble, about David & Patrick’s first wedding anniversary that popped into my head.

If I can cheat and talk about my second most recent SC fic though, cos it’s a little more substantial - i hope this is forever - which is the second in a two-part series featuring artist!David and written within the framework of a poem that inspired the fic. As soon as I read the poem I knew I wanted to write this part of the story!

I loved working with a poem as a guide for the story, which isn’t something I’ve done before, and it was a fun way to add to a story that I hadn’t actually intended to write more of until I read the poem!

As for whether I could’ve done anything better, I mean there are always things that can be improved, tweaking the wording or punctuation etc but at some point you have to stop obsessing over those things and just do the thing! I don’t think I’d change anything substantial though, I’m pretty proud of this series, I think it’s some of my best writing. 

What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about publishing their fic for the first time?

Do it! It’s terrifying, but if you have a friend to read over the fic first, not even to beta, just to read it and tell you how amazing you are, that can help with the nerves. My other trick is to hit post and then go to sleep so you’re not anxiously refreshing the page waiting to see if people are clicking (or is that just me?). Timezones mean that I can usually do this and then (hopefully) wake up to some lovely comments. 

Also, it’s cliché but it’s true - write what you want to read. If nothing else, you’ll have these stories to come back to for yourself. 

What’s one thing that you’d like to say to your favorite Schitt’s Creek character?

Just one thing? To just one character? Impossible!

The beginning, middle or end of a fic. Which do you like the most? Which is the worst?

Yes. 

Tricky question! I think I like writing the middle the most through - the guts of the fic, where all the things happen and you get to really have some fun. 

Worst is endings, I often struggle to actually finish a fic and know where to finish it, even if I have a clear end point in terms of plot. 

Are you interested in writing original fiction?

No, that’s not for me. I really enjoy playing with other people’s characters and delving into their stories, but original fiction isn’t something I aspire to. There are many fic writers out there who I’d buy original fiction from though!

When did you start writing?

I write a fair bit in my day job, helping other people to tell their stories, but it’s very different. I didn’t start writing fiction until February 2021 just before I posted my first fic! I hadn’t written fiction before that since high school which was… well, I’m the same age as Dan Levy so you do the maths. 

Outlines - yes or no?

Yes, but not always, and they vary in quality. Sometimes the outline is just a couple of dot points, or a line or two of dialogue and and a concept. Other times, it’s detailed, chapter by chapter with bits of dialogue and specific plot points I want to hit.
