i'm not passive but aggressive
[Fallen Hero series. Mid-Retribution, post Herald rooftop scene.]
[Chargestep implications; River Basri, Ricardo Ortega and Daniel Sullivan. 1450 words. Discussions of Heartbreak + death. (Kinda just dashed this one out in a flurry of inspo, apologies if it's not super clean!!)]
“Ortega…”
Daniel lingers in the doorway of Ricardo’s official office, looking for all the world like a wet puppy who just peed in the house.
Ricardo smiles. He’ll have to tell River that one later.
“What’s up?” he asks, because he’s not a complete asshole.
Daniel takes one step in. Starts hovering. Doesn’t stop hovering until he’s close to Ricardo’s desk, which prompts Ricardo to lean back in his chair until it creaks, because — what? Why is their heroic little flyboy looking at him like that? Like he’s about to break the worst news of his—
Yeah, get out of that thought spiral before it begins. Jesus.
“What is it, Herald?” he asks again, harder this time.
The use of his hero name gets the boy back on the floor, at least. “I just feel like you should hear about what happened from me…first…”
Nervousness and shame rolls off Daniel in waves so strong that Ricardo stands up. He’s not sure how to make that sudden motion casual, and any attempt to seem cool about it clearly fails by the way Herald takes an immediate step back. Ricardo puts his hands up.
“What?” he asks, hoping confusion is more clear than annoyance. “Did something happen during therapy?”
“Um, so, I talked to River.”
Ricardo feels gravity pull him hard into the floor. “Yes?
“And, I…I may have carried hertoarooftopwhereshefaintedandI’mreallysorryIdidn’teventhink—”
“Hey, woah, slow down.”
Daniel takes a breath. Eyes not meeting Ricardo’s. Face flushed red as a crack in the earth. “I’m sorry, I know I should have thought about it. I know—I mean it makes perfect sense that she has trauma around heights because of—”
Ricardo raises a hand. Keeps it flat. Get that tension out of your body before it starts tingling. Put the mask on. “Stop. Start over. What the hell are you going on about?”
Daniel grounds himself. Feet squared, like he’s ready to be hit. Ricardo resists the urge to click his tongue. Easy to knock over; stance not wide enough. “Well, I know how you are about…her.”
A weight, thunked right into the gut. That spit-up glop of words, coming together slowly. A rooftop where she fainted. A…
His heart twists, 180. Agony, right down to the gut.
“What did you do?” he manages to ask nicely.
Daniel’s gaze sharpens. Confidence coming back, slow and then all at once like sunrise. “At least give me a minute to explain myself before you punch me.”
Ricardo’s mouth twitches downward. He leans into his desk. Put the damn mask on. “Fine.”
He can almost see the heroic effort Daniel makes not to roll his eyes at Ricardo’s too-serious tone. “First of all, you're not her keeper. But I’m telling you now so everyone is on the same page and because I am sorry, okay?”
He moves on too fast for Ricardo to snap back. He doesn’t get to say that. He doesn’t know how fragile this situation is — but then, even Ricardo is still left wondering, most days. He must not be playing his cards close enough to the chest if Daniel notices his concern.
“I wanted to talk to her about some…things,” Daniel says. “So I found her on the road and she said she’d listen to me so I…picked her up…and flew off…”
The earlier glob of words suddenly becomes clear as day and just as fucking scorching. Ricardo’s fists clench. “Good god. Are you shitting me?”
“I know.”
Hands. Clenching. Reach, reach, reach. No. Stop. “No you fucking don’t, kid—”
"Don't start with that," he snaps. "This is the problem, okay?”
"Come off it—"
"No, I mean the ‘no one telling me anything’ crap! I had no idea she would react that way—”
He can hear River’s voice in his head. Do you have a brain? “Because, for damn starters, you aren’t supposed to pick up civilians off the street!”
Daniel has the good sense to pause, at least. He sighs, frustrated, and holds his fingers to his temples. “I…know.”
It takes some of the wind out of Ricardo’s sails, but not enough. “You know how most people died during Heartbreak, don’t you? You at least knew that? Did you know she threw herself out a fourth-story window?”
Daniel’s gaze turns the poisonous kind of blue and he bites his lip but he stays quiet.
“This is what happens when you don’t fucking think, Daniel.”
“Oh, that’s rich.”
No. No. Let it go. Let the static in your veins just…go…
“Is she okay?” Ricardo grinds out.
Daniel nods a bit too fast, but his frown sticks like gum. “She, um, recovered fast. But I…kind of wanted to ask you about that.”
“Really.” He needs to call her, he needs to fix this right now, right now before she—
His glare turns ice cold. “Newsflash, Ortega, you don’t get to own all the rights to giving a shit about her.”
“She’s not Sidestep anymore,” he says. “Why do you care?”
Daniel steps back a half-step, eyes wide with shock. “Jesus. I forget how much of a fucking asshole you are, sometimes.”
Got the kid to cuss. There’s that at least. Still. You’re not a young roaring lion anymore, act like it. He puts his hands up. Truce. “Sorry.” The words feel hollow but he’s fucking trying. “You’re right. That was out of line.”
Some tension drains from Daniel’s shoulders and settles right on Ortega’s instead.
“I’m surprised you didn’t get punched,” Ortega can’t help but slip in.
“Something’s missing inside her. I don’t know. Do you know what I’m talking about?”
“Don’t,” he snaps, because it’s cold. It’s cold and it hurts like a bitch, hearing someone else say it. Hearing someone else see the ice behind her silver eyes. The sludge of terror and hate that prompts her whole body to freeze up moments before she screams in fury. Does she hate him? She would have the right. He wonders, every day.
“Do you even hear yourself?” Daniel asks, voice low. “She thought you sent me after her. Maybe you should think about that.”
In answer, Ricardo slowly sits back down in his chair.
Sometimes Daniel is like the worst of Wei and himself rolled into one — smarter than you’d give him credit for, tactical about it, and absolutely unwilling to quit once he’s got the scent.
“So she told you about Heartbreak,” Ricardo manages.
Daniel looks toward the window, squinting into the sun. “Yeah. Not a lot, but…enough.” He turns back. His voice quiets. “Have…do you…”
“What.”
“Do you think about…why they keep so much of it classified? From us?”
Ricardo leans back. “What did she say?”
“Just…” Daniel’s fingers fidget together. His eyes glance around the room. Too many ears. Hmm. “Well, to think about who knows what. And why that matters.”
Yeah. That does sound like River. Make the map, connect the dots, pick the decisive action. Even at her lowest. Of course that’s what she’d say.
“We can talk about that later,” he says, gesturing broadly — vaguely to the cameras. He hopes Daniel is smart enough to pick up on that. “Just…don’t pull shit like that again, okay? Better yet…maybe don’t speak to her unless she talks to you first.”
“Well. About that.”
Ricardo tilts his head, jaw clenching. Don’t think about her falling limp in the sky. Don’t. Just don’t touch it.
“She agreed to, um. Help me train?”
He’s…not sure what to do with the weird pit that opens up in his gut. Is it jealousy? No, you’re too old for that. Anger? Worry? Confusion? Why is she training Daniel? Isn’t she retired? What does she get out of that? Does she want back in the fold, just not sure how to go about it because of her…family situation? That would sound like her; she hated even the smell of imposition.
He files it all down into a smirk. Confidence. You’re fine with this. You are. “Good luck with that. Maybe she’ll teach you how to use that big brain of yours.”
Daniel glares at him, though the heat isn’t so stifling. “Maybe you should ask for lessons, too.”
“Good one.”
“Whatever.” A beat. The boy is still a professional to the core. “If you need something, you know where to find me.”
Herald leaves.
Ortega turns to his phone. The big brick.
He wants to resist the impulse. She was just here.
But he can’t. He’s weak as shit. He knows this. He’s a fool. He’ll call himself however many names he needs to in order to get over it and pick up the phone — because keeping her here, safe, protected, is more important than anything else.
He’s not going to fail again because of some dumb kid.

7,8,9 RIVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
questions from here.
7. What's one way your OC has changed since you first came up with them?
ok so firstly. he was a woman.
Being essentially an evolution of the first sidestep i played all the way back in 2018, too many things have changed that it's easier to name the things that haven't.
The one thing that truly stuck is the name River, being tech-savvy tactician, the suit powers, a generally high arrogance and low ruthlessness, and a deeply close relationship with Ortega (og River back in 2018 had 95% Ortega relationship at the end of rebirth, and 73% w/ the puppet).
Other than those things, i have changed everything from River's gender/ethnicity/appearance to his motivation and goals. (and more importantly, his last name!!! originally named River Basri, i picked Becker because i only remembered picking one of the standard last named and i didn't recall what it was)
8. Would your OC ostensibly be able to get away with murder?
Probably not! Bleeding heart ass motherfucker.
River will kill Regina though - mother dearest - and he doesn't care if he'd get away with it or not. He's completed his goal.
though in my current replay, i'm going to be a little less careful with lives, so we'll see how it all changes.
9. Do you have a specific lyric or quote which you associate with your OC?
holdup holdup i have like. six different playlists for river.
for quotes, it would be: "Revenge is simply justice with teeth." which when googling lands me on the origin of Simon R. Green (this is also the name of my main playlist for him).
for lyric it would be: "It's not that I hate you, I hate that it hurt." from the song an ego thing by Lizzy McAlpine. Which I associate with most of his relationships but specifically Julia and Chen.
thank you for the questions Seer ilu <3

Heal my soul before I die
‘Kay... I never thought I write something so explicit between Dar and Salim but here I come, I guess.
This Hoathememonth is gonna be the end of me, I swear.
Hope you will be enjoying it anyway, it’s shorter than what I wrote during these last weeks but I’m kinda proud of it anyway!
TW: Explicit death
**
When blood flowed out of his mouth like an endless fountain, Dar knew what fate would await him. His fingers twitched in pain on a corpse, as a pathetic whine followed the red river; the one which sealed his death. All sort of noises surrounded him, and his ears were about to exploded; too much pressure rested on it. The demons’ screams melted with loud exclamations from a language he didn’t speak, bones shattered all around as torches creaked at his side. His vision became blurry, as he felt his own mind diving away; in a lake of tremendous pain, redden by his own blood.
“D…!”
His eyes abruptly shut as another whimper escaped his dirty lips. His thoughts mixed memories with apprehension for his future, replayed the attack and the horror which crushed him seconds ago. A creature grabbed him; a ferocious and disgusting being dug his dark nails into him.
“Da…!... ar!...”
He should have listened.
He should have listened to Salim when he got the chance to.
But instead, his pride pushed his loyal friend away and spitted his poison on him. His stupid and stubborn pride made him run into a losing battle.
Now, Allah was punishing his fearless behavior with his vengeful hands.
“DAR!”
As he managed to open his eyelid once again, Dar saw a friendly shape kneeling at his side. He recognized Salim, even though his vision remained fuzzy. His comrade’s hands closed around his shoulders before their hands attempted to slow down the hemorrhage. Useless.
“You were… Right.” He admitted between two helpless cries, as his hands grabbed the other’s man uniform and hanged up on it. “You were right about… The demons…”
“Don’t talk.” Salim’s trembling voice ordered. Despite the pain killing drowning him, Dar heard his friend’s despair louder than anything else. The demons’ fury almost disappeared when he felt a warm and fearful breath against his cold cheeks. “Don’t talk while I am saving you.”
“Too… Late.” Basri’s eyes looked at the man upon them. They knew Salim’s round face by heart, fancied the beauty of its gentle curves and imperfections, envied the woman who had laid hundreds of kisses on its hot and tempting skin.
When he came to the man’s house this afternoon, Dar’s mind hoped to ravish him for good. He might claim him and banished his sinful wife and son away. But Allah didn’t let him.
Maybe he was the sinful one after all. Maybe God chose death for him, because he deserved it. He deserved it for being hungry for a man’s body and moans, for a soul he shouldn’t have loved in the first place, for the thoughts of Salim and him laying in the same bed.
“Stay with me, Dar!” His lieutenant’s command stopped his eyelid from closing.
His pupils stared at the round face once more, then his hands violently grabbed Salim’s shoulders. What gave him the strength of hugging the man and kissing him with possessiveness? He didn’t know. However, what he knew was that his friend’s tasted like Heaven despite the blood and the saliva flowing from his own mouth.
Salim’s grip fainted, before Dar fell on the ground once again. Death caught up with him as the scenery became distant. Bit by bit the pain seemed vain, like a long-gone souvenir, but he couldn’t let go now. Not before he heard Salim says…
“Say you… You love me.” Dar begged with a low voice.
His fingers gripped on the other man’s wrist as he asked one last time. “Say you love me.”
His whispers transformed into a silent echo, as he felt one last thing.
Salim warm and reassuring breath against his ears singing: “I love you, Dar. I love you.”

ISLAM 101: SPIRITUALITY IN ISLAM: PART 102
One of the most common plaints about Sufism is that it is remarkably open to women’s public performance of worship. There are famous female Sufis, whose careers and hagiographies date to as early as the late 8th- and early 9th-century C.E. Rabia al-‘Adawiyya (d. 801) was famous for her desire to worship God neither for fear of hell nor desire for paradise but out of love. In certain stories associating her with another great early figure of Sufism, Al-Hasan al-Basri, she is seen to surpass him in both wisdom and piety.
Perhaps due to a readiness to integrate local culture, in some Sufi circles women and men participate in ceremonies together. In other cases, orders are comprised entirely of women, with women teachers, called shaykhas. The Qubaysiyyat in Syria and Lebanon are among the most popular and populous female orders in the Middle East today.
But women’s participation in teaching and learning among Sufis is not limited to the modern period. Ibn Arabi (d. 1240 C.E.) listed two female Sufis among his teachers, Shams and Fatimah. He referred to Fatimah as a Gnostic whom he served for several years. Another famous Fatimah, Fatimah Nishapuri, lived in Mecca in the 9th century, and was regarded among the greatest of Sufis by her male contemporaries.
In terms of sexuality, Sufism has occasionally been controversial in one respect: its use of the language of eroticism and passion to describe the relationship with God, the Beloved. As in all branches of Islam, Sufism does not prescribe celibacy. Many famous Sufis were married and had children, though others were indeed celibate. Al-Ghazzali actually wrote on the virtue of sexuality and marriage when practiced properly and when inclusive of the desire to procreate.
Overall, therefore, an aversion to sexuality itself is not a major issue for Sufis any more than other desires. It does not stand out among other physical desires, such as the need for food or sleep. Yet the language of love and passion is an enormously important aspect of Sufi literature in discussing a relationship with God.
Love imagery is expressed in the following poem by Rumi, entitled “Love is the Master”:
Love is the One who masters all things;
I am mastered totally by Love.
By my passion of love for Love
I have ground sweet as sugar.
O furious Wind, I am only a straw before you;
How could I know where I will be blown next?
Whoever claims to have made a pact with Destiny
Reveals himself a liar and a fool;
What is any of us but a straw in a storm?
How could anyone make a pact with a hurricane?
God is working everywhere his massive Resurrection;
How can we pretend to act on our own?
In the hand of Love I am like a cat in a sack;
Sometimes Love hoists me into the air,
Sometimes Love flings me into the air,
Love swings me round and round His head;
I have no peace, in this world or any other.
The lovers of God have fallen in a furious river;
They have surrendered themselves to Love’s commands.
Like mill wheels they turn, day and night, day and night,
Constantly turning and turning, and crying out.
In this poem, Rumi, the lover, is completely helpless, like a piece of straw blown about by a hurricane, or a helpless animal tossed into the air. Elsewhere, love is an all-consuming fire, in which the Sufi is consumed as by a fire:
Should Love’s heart rejoice unless I burn?
For my heart is Love’s dwelling.
If You will burn Your house, burn it, Love!
Who will say, 'It’s not allowed’?
Burn this house thoroughly!
The lover’s house improves with fire.
From now on I will make burning my aim,
From now on I will make burning my aim, for I am like the candle: burning only makes me brighter.
Abandon sleep tonight; traverse for one night the region of the sleepless.
Look upon these lovers who have become distraught and like moths have died in union with the One Beloved.
Look upon this ship of God’s creatures and see how it is sunk in Love.

Istighfar
A man once came to al-Hasan al-Basri and complained to him: “The sky does not shower us with rain.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness (i.e. say أستغفر ألله).”
Then another person came to him and said, “I complain of poverty.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness.”
Then another person came to him and complained, “My wife is barren; she cannot bear children.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness.”
The people who were present, said to al-Hasan: “Everytime a person came to you complaining, you instructed them to seek Allah’s forgiveness?”
Al-Hasan al-Basri said, “Have you not read the statement of Allah? ‘I said “Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance; increase you in wealth and children; grant you gardens and bestow on you rivers.”‘” [Nuh (71):10-12]
There are two things in the earth that give a person safety and security from the punishment of Allah. The first has been removed, whilst the second still remains. As for the first, it was the Messenger of Allah (صلي ألله عليه و سلم).“Allah would not punish them while you were among them.” [al-Anfal (8):33] As for the second, it is istighfar. “Allah would not punish them as long as they sought forgiveness.” [al-Anfal (8):33]أستغفر ألله… أستغفر ألله… أستغفر ألله…
Do not ever leave istighfar!
Astaghfirullaaha wa 'atoobu 'ilayhi.
I seek the forgiveness of Allah and repent to Him.
(Recite one hundred times in Arabic during the day)
It is reported in Saheeh Muslim that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“I seek forgiveness one hundred times in a day.”

The Messenger of God: Muhammad: Part 121
The Tabi'un: Part 1
In many of the places where the Qur'an praises the Companions, it also mentions the blessed generations following in their way. For example:
The Outstrippers (the first to embrace Islam and excel others in virtue), the first of the Emigrants and the Helpers, and those who followed them in doing good, God is well-pleased with them and they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them gardens underneath which rivers flow, therein to dwell forever; that is the mighty triumph. (9:100)
The Tabi'un, first of all, must be among those praised together with the Companions. Like them, they were well-pleased with God regardless of whether He sent them good or bad, blessing or misfortune. Conscious of their servanthood before God, they worshipped Him in deep respect and reverence. Like the Companions, they loved Him deeply and trusted Him completely. The Messenger praised them, saying: "Good tidings for those who have seen me and believed in me, and good tidings for those who see those who saw me."
The Tabi'un followed in the Companions' footsteps and showed them due respect. They cherished no rancor and enmity against any of the believers, and wished everyone well:
As for those who came after them, they say: "Our Master, forgive us and our brothers, who preceded us in belief, and put not into our hearts any rancor towards those who believe. Our Master, surely You are the All-Gentle, the All-Compassionate." (59:10)
As described in 9:100, this blessed generation followed the Companions in doing good (ihsan). In addition to meaning respect, being well-wishing and altruistic, one hadith says that ihsan also means: "Doing good (ihsan) is that you worship God as if you were seeing Him; if, however, you do not actually see Him, surely He sees you."
This generation came at a time when conspiracies and hypocrisy caused great internal dissension. At this critical juncture, they protected, defended, and practiced Islam in deep consciousness and devotion. They became the referents of: Our Master, in You we trust, to You we turn, and to You is the homecoming (60:4).
Some of them performed 100 rak'as of nightly prayers, recited the whole Qur'an every 2 or 3 days, always did their obligatory prayers in congregation in a mosque, always slept (like Masruq) in prostration before the Ka'ba, and did not laugh loudly during their whole lives.
Uways al-Qarani is generally regarded as the greatest Tabi'un. Although old enough to have seen the Prophet, he had no opportunity to do so. One day while sitting with his Companions, the Messenger advised them: "If you see Uways al-Qarani, ask him to pray for you." During his caliphate, 'Umar asked Yemeni pilgrims about Uways. When he was found one year among the pilgrims, 'Umar requested him to pray for him. Uncomfortable at being identified, Uways was never seen again among people until he was martyred at the Battle of Siffin fighting for 'Ali.
There were many illustrious Tabi'un, among them Masruq ibn al-Ajda', Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, Hasan al-Basri, Muhammad ibn Sirin, 'Ali Zayn al-'Abidin, Qasim ibn Muhammad, and Muhammad ibn Munkadir, who were peerless in knowledge, piety, and righteousness.
Muhammad ibn Munkadir was called al-Bakka' (the one who cries much), due to his fear of God. Once his mother told him: "O my son, if I had not known you since childhood, I would think you are crying for some sin. Why do you cry so much?" He said that he did so because he was deeply conscious of God's Majesty, of the terror of the Day of Judgement, and of Hell. When asked on his death-bed why he was crying, he replied: "I am afraid I'll be included in the meaning of the verse: Yet there will appear to them from God that they never reckoned with (39:47)."
Masruq ibn al-Ajda' worshipped God very earnestly. He used to sleep in prostration before tha Ka'ba. When they suggested that he should lie down during his last illness, he answered: "By God, if someone appeared and told me that God wouldn't punish me, even then I would continue to pray with the same earnestness as before." He did so because he was following the Prophet, who, when asked by 'A'isha why he tired himself so much with praying, answered: "Shall I not be a thankful servant?"
Sa'id ibn Jubayr was a student of Ibn 'Abbas. He spent the day preaching Islam and the night praying. He fought against Hajjaj on the side of 'Abd al-Rahman al-Kindi. When finally he was seized, the soldiers taking him to Hajjaj spent a night in a monastery in a big forest. Sa'id wanted to pray in the forest. The soldiers let him, thinking that wild animals would tear him to pieces. The soldiers watched him pray through a window, and saw wild animals gather around him also to watch.
When his captors used torture to force him to swear allegiance to Hajjaj, he always refused: "You are in the wrong, wronging the Prophet's descendants. I'll never take the oath of allegiance to you." Before he was executed, he recited the verse Muslims recite during the animal sacrifice: I have turned my face to Him who originated the Heavens and the Earth, a man of pure faith; I am not of those who associate partners with God (6:79). When they turned his face away from the prayer direction (qibla), he recited: To God belong the East and the West; Wherever you turn, there is the Face of God (2:115). They struck his neck with a sword and from his lips came out: "There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God."

The Advice on Istighfaar from the Qur’an
A man complained to al-Hasan al-Basri (rahimahullah) about a drought.
So he said to him: Pray to Allah for forgiveness (do istighfar)
Another man complained to him of poverty.
So he said to him: Pray to Allaah to forgive you (make istighfar)
Another man said to him: Pray to Allah to bless me with a child.
He said: Pray to Allaah for forgiveness. (istighfar)
Another complained to him that his garden was dry.
He said to him: Pray to Allaah for forgiveness.
We asked him about that (as to why he gave the same advice for all situations that were presented to him)
And he (rahimahullah) replied: This is not my personal opinion. For Allah (azza wa jall) says:
"Ask forgiveness from your Lord, Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver;
• He will send rain to you in abundance.
• And give you increase in wealth
• and children
• and bestow on you gardens
• and bestow on you rivers.
(Surah Nuh, 10-12)
[Tafsir al-Qurtubi (rahimahullah), 18/301-302, Tafsir Surah Nuh 10-12]

Can we get any interesting facts about River 👁️👁️ anything you desperately want to share about the little guy you haven’t had a chance too?
HI GOLDFISH, lovely to see u in my inbox!
I'd like to share this wonderful illustration @jyiori gifted me in a present exchange ❤️
Tumblr media
That's Ruben (Hollow Ground) and River at the right, my main Sidestep 💕🌸
You see, Riot (River's villain persona) is a decent villain. An anarchist, fighting for Justice, tries to save people, warns Ochoa to stay safe... But as a person, he's a piece of shit. He can be a good-ish friend, but he's drawn to toxic environments and dynamics like a moth does the light because he doesn't how to get close to someone either way.
I see a parallel between his possible relationship with Ortega and Hollow Ground, because, to me, HG and Ortega are characters that disregard other people's boundaries or autonomy wishes.
Hollow Ground's own disregard is more obvious cause of the whole manipulation thing, but in River's case, he's subconsciously encouraged Ortega to make them think they should disregard those boundaries/be a pushover cause gods know River won't enthusiastically engage in a social interaction.
Yes, he is mad when people overstep. But he is EXPECTING them to overstep and I think he would get angrier or would think that either HG or Ortega don't give a shit about him if they didn't do so.
Which is not... A very healthy dynamic. But it's the only one he knows.
Also love me a good found family trope, especially if it's toxic siblings dynamic.

Don’t leave Istighfar..
Al-Hasan al-Basri said,
“Have you not read the statement of Allah?
‘I said “Ask forgiveness of your Lord.
Truly He is Oft-Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance; increase you in wealth and children; grant you gardens and bestow on you rivers.”‘” [Nuh (71):10-12]

[Fallen Hero series. Mid-Retribution.]
[Flystep. Daniel POV with River Basri. Takes place after the coffee date at some point, but before dinner. ~1000 words.]
[Sort of a writing exercise...mostly an exploration of Daniel and their dynamic.]
She slips so easily into cold imperiousness.
It's the single tell Daniel gets before River slips low and swings out a slender leg.
He doesn't move in time. In the same breath that warmth leaves her eyes, she becomes an arrow of confusing intention, bizarre enough that he nearly falls over, forgetting himself, before he tumbles, weightless, back into another opening stance.
But then she stuns him again — by giggling.
Once, light as air, trilling like a bird call. Easy to miss, but he doesn't because someone should notice these things, shouldn't they? She covers her mouth with her hand, fingers long and thin. Beautiful. This is how art works. Everyone finds their own meaning in the sunrise.
He grins—
Her fist snaps right for his shoulder but pulls back before she hits collarbone. Taps twice. A warning.
That's...new. Since they started getting coffee, she’s started giving him tip-offs. Warm-ups. Space before she sends him to the ground.
"Did you forget you can fly?" she asks. The tiny upcurved corners of her lips for once reach her eyes. "You could have built momentum and got me on the ground."
Blood rushes to his face. "Bad instinct, I guess."
"You were in your head again, weren't you?"
She asks, like she doesn't already know. She tries so hard to pretend, like she’s practiced with a script. He knows that a little too keenly.
"Yeah," he says. Sheepish.
The light leaves her eyes. "I'm your enemy right now. Remember that."
His body goes taut. Why does it have to be like that, exactly, so serious and exacting? Who taught her that the only way to live is by fighting every second for it? Where do you rest, in a world like that?
"Good," she says, and his blood turns to ice. "Get mad, if you have to. Whatever works."
And yet, she has no idea.
He launches into a flurry of blows, momentum from the core not the arm, prompting her to twist away in surprise. He never goes first, and he knows she'll appreciate the tactical maneuver. But something itches where he can't reach it. She's a mind-reader with an incredible blind spot.
She can see every contour of his emotions except the ones that apply to her.
They enter the old routine; he swings, she dodges with perfect grace, born to the dance. But she is right, that anger can be useful, so he lets a little of it through.
How can I make it so you will laugh without covering your mouth?
Who hurt you?
How do I stop it?
How do I stop it, before you hurt yourself bad enough you don't come back?
Is that what you're afraid of? Did he think that, before—
His skull suddenly rocks back, whiplash from a fist to the chin. He falls from some edge inside himself, furious and keen, before he remembers gravity doesn't have pull on him anymore. Just other people. His hands clench hard and snap outward.
Just other—
River goes flying. Across the rooftop, skittering like a stone on water, too fast.
"No!"
The word is torn from him worse than a reflex. He doesn’t remember the push-off into flight; in the next instant, his back is to the sky, arms tight around River’s middle so she doesn’t fall, momentum pushing them further into the sky.
He swore it to himself when she fainted that he would never make her afraid again, but here he fucking is, mind screaming one harsh note, a single word, then four: Mistake. Mistake. You are a mistake.
“Daniel. Daniel.” Hands grip his forearms. Her back is curled into his chest still, stunned. “It’s okay. We weren’t that close.”
Lies. Why does she choose now to lie, instead of throwing the truth at his feet like she always does so he’ll lay down like a dog? They are in the fucking air. There’s barely an edge of rooftop below them. “I’m so. I’m so sorry. I’m so…we should…”
“You’re squeezing too hard.” Cold imperiousness seeps back into her voice. He deserves it. It also brings him back to earth, in every single sense. She is taking control of the situation. That’s what she does. “Put me down.”
They both return to the rooftop. His senses return to him akin to exiting a tunnel. His stomach churns. His fingers feel numb.
“I’m done today, I think,” he manages.
She is a single arm’s length away from him, her head tilted slightly to the side. Her mouth curves downward, matching the trajectory of her gaze, which is affixed to his feet, still cemented to the ground. It’s moments like these he remembers what it feels like to be pulled so fiercely down, so harshly down that it might as well be law. Humans aren’t supposed to fly.
Everyone should orbit something. Even him.
Hubris kills. He saw it happen.
“You’re really mean to yourself,” she mutters.
“You’re one to talk,” he says, before he can stop it.
But then, fuck—
She laughs again.
She sparkles a little, when she laughs. Her freckles catch the sun and her eyes wrinkle slightly, though she hasn’t laughed enough for it to leave lines. Her face is so barren when she thinks no one is looking; but there’s a raw beauty to this, like moon quartz, that means it has to be real.
Fuck. He hopes she didn’t hear that one.
“You’re right,” she says, smile lingering.
He laughs. A balm. “Oh, I can’t wait to tell Ortega you said that.”
Her smile turns conspiratorial. “I’ll give it to you this once.”
“He won’t believe me.”
“Exactly.”
He floats again, a little bit. He catches himself in the act, drifting toward her.
And she lets it happen. She lets it happen.
“I’ll get you down,” he says, before his mind runs somewhere else.
They are halfway down the building when she says: “It’s okay.”
A step outside the script. It comes out clumsy and poor.
He holds her just a little closer, all the same.

Are You Prepared for Death?
The greatest work can be done by someone, is to preparing himself before to leave this world, to repent. It's repentance that puts someone on the right path,so I'll try to base myself on, to answer your question. Why?
the Prophet (pbuh) made several repent daily, more than 70 times in a single meeting. Known that the Prophet (pbuh) had no sins, then who has not committed sins among us? So,every Muslim must repentent daily, before death, especially for those who know they have committed sins, to be well prepared for death, right?
Repentance is to return to obedience to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), after committing a sin.
The believer conducts daily to every sin, a repentance.
Hassan Al-basri said "each day passed,if I don't commit a sin,is an Eid to me"
Repentance is like an act of Allah (سبحانه وتعالى):
[(2/222) And they ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.]
Repentance is an obligation for every Muslim, [(66/8) O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, "Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent.]
Repentance is one way to get success [in the Hereafter]:[(39/53) Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.]
The success of the individual lies in the fact that it reaches what he wants and be spared from what he fears. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) forgives the sins of anyone who sincerely repents whatever the scale and number of sins: [(39/53) Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.]
Dear brother, dear Sister, if you have committed sins, do not despair of the mercy of Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), because the doors of repentance are open until the sun rises from the West.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Allah reaches out into the night to forgive the one who has committed sins day and He reaches out in the day to forgive the one who has committed sins night, until the sun rises from the West. "Narrated by Muslim
And as there are many people who have repented for their many sins, and to whom Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) has forgiven. Allah says: [(25/68) And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.
-69) Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated -
-70) Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.]
Sincere repentance is one that includes five conditions:
- First: Sincerity to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), that is to say it is directed exclusively to Allah(سبحانه وتعالى), to get his reward and escape His punishment.
- Second: The regret of sin has been committed; it saddens and he would never to have committed.
- Third: Stop the sin immediately; if this sin violates the right to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), by committing an unlawful act, he must abandon it. And if sin was abandoning a compulsory act, then it must start practicing. Similarly, if that sin violates the right of a person, it must fulfill this right by returning the goods or asking forgiveness and repairing the harm.
- Fourth: The determination not to return to sin in the future.
- Fifth: Repent before the deadline, that is to say, the agony or the rising of the sun rises from the west. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى)says: "But repentance is not for those who do evil deeds until death comes to one of them and said, 'Now I repent.'" The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever repents before the sun rises from the West, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) will forgive his sins. "Narrated by Muslim
The perfect knowledge belongs to Allah

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Surah Al-Baqarah Ayah 19-20
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
19. Or like a rainstorm in the sky, bringing darkness, thunder, and lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunderclap for fear of death. ButAllah ever encompasses the disbelievers.
20. The lightning almost snatches away theirsight, whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stan.d still. And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allah has power over all things.
Another Parable of the Hypocrites
Allah says,
Or like a rainstorm in the sky, bringing darkness, thunder, and lightning.
This is another parable which Allah gave about the hypocrites who sometimes know the truth and doubt it at other times. When they suffer from doubt, confusion and disbelief, their hearts are, (Like a Sayyib), meaning, "The rain", as Ibn Mas`ud, Ibn Abbas, and several other Companions have confirmed as well as Abu Al-Aliyah, Mujahid, Sa`id bin Jubayr, Ata, Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Qatadah, Atiyah Al-Awfi, Ata Al-Khurasani, As-Suddi and Ar-Rabi bin Anas.
Ad-Dahhak said "It is the clouds."
However, the most accepted opinion is that; it means the rain that comes down during, (darkness), meaning, here, the doubts, disbelief and hypocrisy.
*(thunder), that shocks the hearts with fear.
The hypocrites are usually full of fear and anxiety, just as Allah described them, They think that every cry is against them. (63: 4)
and,
They swear by Allah that they are truly of you while they are not of you, but they are a people who are afraid. Should they find refuge, or caves, or a place of concealment, they would turn straightway thereto in a swift rush. (9:56-57).
*(The lightning), is in reference to the light of faith that is sometimes felt in the hearts of the hypocrites.
Allah said,
They thrust their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunderclap for fear of death. But Allah ever encompasses the disbelievers. meaning, their cautiousness does not benefit them because they are bound by Allah's allencompassing will and decision.
Similarly, Allah said, Has the story reached you of two hosts. Of Fir`awn (Pharaoh) and Thamud! Nay! The disbelievers (persisted) in denying. And Allah encompasses them from behind! (85:17-20)
Allah then said,
The lightning almost snatches away their sight, meaning, because the lightning is strong itself, and because their comprehension is weak and does not allow them to embrace the faith.
Also, Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn Abbas commented on the Ayah, "The Qur'an mentioned almost all of the secrets of the hypocrites.''
Whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, Ali bin Abi Talhah narrated that Ibn Abbas said, "Whenever the hypocrites acquire a share in the victories of Islam, they are content with this share. Whenever Islam suffers a calamity, they are ready to revert to disbelief.''
Similarly, Allah said,
And among mankind is he who worships Allah on the edge: If good befalls him, he is content with that. (22:11)
Whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still, Muhammad bin Ishaq reported that Ibn Abbas said, "They recognize the truth and speak about it. So their speech is upright, but when they revert to disbelief, they again fall into confusion.''
This was also said by Abu Al-Aliyah, Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Qatadah, Ar-Rabi bin Anas and As-Suddi, who narrated it from the Companions, and it isthe most obvious and most correct view, and Allah knows best.
Consequently, on the Day of Judgment, the believers will be given a light according to the degree of their faith.
Some of them will gain light that illuminates over a distance of several miles, some more, some less. Some people's light will glow sometimes and be extinguished at other times. They will, therefore, walk on the Sirat (the bridge over the Fire) in the light, stopping when it is extinguished. Some people will have no light at all, these are the hypocrites whom Allah described when He said, On the Day when the hypocrites _ men and women _ will say to the believers: "Wait for us!
Let us get something from your light!'' It will be said to them; "Go back to you rear! Then seek a light!'' (57:13)
Allah described the believers, On the Day you shall see the believing men and the believing women _ their light running forward before them and by their right hands. Glad tidings for you this Day! Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise). (57:12)
and,
The Day that Allah will not disgrace the Prophet (Muhammad) and those who believe with him. Their Light will run forward before them and (with their Records _ Books of deeds) in their right hands. They will say: "Our Lord! Keep perfect our Light for us (and do not put it off till we cross over the Sirat (a slippery bridge over the Hell) safely) and grant us forgiveness. Verily, You are Able to do all things.'' (66:8)
Ibn Abi Hatim narrated that Abdullah bin Mas`ud commented on, (Their Light will run forward before them),
"They will pass on the Sirat, according to their deeds. The light that some people have will be as big as a mountain, while the light of others will be as big as a date tree. The people who will have the least light are those whose index fingers will sometimes be lit and extinguished at other times.''
Ibn Abi Hatim also reported that Ibn Abbas said, "Every person among the people of Tawhid (Islamic Monotheism) will gain a light on the Day of Resurrection. As for the hypocrite, his light will be extinguished.
When the believers witness the hypocrite's light being extinguished, they will feel anxious. Hence, they will supplicate,  (Our Lord! Keep perfect our Light for us).''
Ad-Dahhak bin Muzahim said,
"On the Day of Resurrection, everyone who has embraced the faith will be given a light. When they arrive at the Sirat, the light of the hypocrites will be extinguished. When the believers see this, they will feel anxious and supplicate,  (Our Lord! Keep perfect our Light for us).''
Types of Believers and Types of Disbelievers
Consequently, there are several types of people.
* There are the believers whom the first four Ayat (2:2-5) in Surah Al-Baqarah describe.
* There are the disbelievers who were described in the next two Ayat.
* And there are two categories of hypocrites: the complete hypocrites who were mentioned in the parable of the fire, and the hesitant hypocrites, whose light of faith is sometimes lit and sometimes extinguished. The parable of the rain was revealed about this category, which is not as evil as the first category.
This is similar to the parables that were given in Surah An-Nur. Like the example of the believer and the faith that Allah put in his heart, compared to a brightly illuminated lamp, just like a rising star. This is the believer, whose heart is built on faith and receiving its support from the divine legislation that was revealed to it, without any impurities or imperfections, as we will come to know, Allah willing.
Allah gave a parable of the disbelievers who think that they have something, while in reality they have nothing; such people are those who have compounded ignorance.
Allah said,
As for those who disbelieved, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert. The thirsty one thinks it to be water, until he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing. (24:39)
Allah then gave the example of ignorant disbelievers, simple in their ignorance.
He said;
Or (the state of a disbeliever) is like the darkness in a vast deep sea, overwhelmed by waves, topped by dark clouds, (layers of) darkness upon darkness: if a man stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it! And he for whom Allah has not appointed light, for him there is no light. (24:40)
Therefore, Allah divided the camp of the disbelievers into two groups, advocates and followers.
Allah mentioned these two groups in the beginning of Surah Al-Hajj, And among mankind is he who disputes about Allah, without knowledge, and follows every rebellious (disobedient to Allah) Shaytan (devil), (devoid of every kind of good). (22:3)
And among men is he who disputes about Allah, without knowledge or guidance, or a Book giving light (from Allah). (22:8)
Furthermore, Allah has divided the group of the believers in the beginning of Surah Al-Waqi`ah and at the end. He also divided them in Surah Al-Insan into two groups,
* the Sabiqun (those who preceded), they are the "near ones" (Muqaribun) and
* Ashab Al-Yamin (the companions of the right), and they are righteous (Abrar).
In summary, these Ayat divide the believers into two categories,
* the near ones and
* righteous.
Also, the disbelievers are of two types,
* advocates and
* followers.
In addition, the hypocrites are divided into two types,
* pure hypocrites and
* those who have some hypocrisy in them.
The Two Sahihs record that Abdullah bin Amr said that the Prophet said,
Whoever has the following three (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of the following three characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy, unless and until he gives it up.
* Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.
* Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.
* Whenever he is entrusted, he breaches the trust.
Hence, man might have both a part of faith and a part of hypocrisy, whether in deed, as this Hadith stipulates, or in the creed, as the Ayah (2:20) stipulates.
Types of Hearts
Imam Ahmad recorded Abu Sa`id saying that the Messenger of Allah said,
The hearts are four (types):
* polished as shiny as the radiating lamp,
* a sealed heart with a knot tied around its seal,
* a heart that is turned upside down and
* a wrapped heart.
As for the polished heart, it is the heart of the believer and the lamp is the light of faith.
The sealed heart is the heart of the disbeliever. The heart that is turned upside down is the heart of the pure hypocrite, because he had knowledge but denied it.
As for the wrapped heart, it is a heart that contains belief and hypocrisy.
The example of faith in this heart, is the example of the herb that is sustained by pure water.
The example of hypocrisy in it, is the example of an ulcer that thrives on puss and blood. Whichever of the two substances has the upper hand, it will have the upper hand on that heart.
This Hadith has a Jayid Hasan (good) chain of narration.
Allah said,
And if Allah willed, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allah has power over all things.
Muhammad bin Ishaq reported that Ibn Abbas commented on Allah's statement, (And if Allah willed, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight),
"Because they abandoned the truth after they had knowledge in it.''
Certainly, Allah has power over all things.
Ibn Abbas said,
"Allah is able to punish or pardon His servants as He wills.''
Ibn Jarir commented,
"Allah only described Himself with the ability to do everything in this Ayah as a warning to the hypocrites of His control over everything, and to inform them that His ability completely encompasses them and that He is able to take away their hearing and sight.''
Ibn Jarir and several other scholars of Tafsir stated that; these two parables are about the same kind of hypocrite. So the `or' mentioned in, (Or like a rainstorm from the sky) means `and', just as the Ayah, (And obey neither a sinner or a disbeliever among them).
Therefore, `or' in the Ayah includes a choice of using either example for the hypocrites. Also, Al-Qurtubi said that `or' means, "To show compatibility of the two choices, just as when one says, `Sit with Al-Hasan or Ibn Sirin.'
According to the view of Az-Zamakhshari, `so it means each of these persons is the same as the other, so you may sit with either one of them.'
The meaning of `or' thus becomes `either.' Allah gave these two examples of the hypocrites, because they both perfectly describe them.''
I (Ibn Kathir) say, these descriptions are related to the type of hypocrite, because there is a difference between them as we stated.
For instance, Allah mentioned these types in Surah Bara’h when He repeated the statement, "And among them'' three times, describing their types, characteristics, statements and deeds. So the two examples mentioned here describe two types of hypocrites whose characteristics are similar.
For instance, Allah gave two examples in Surah An-Nur, one for the advocates of disbelief and one for the followers of disbelief, He said,
(As for those who disbelieved, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert) (24:39), until, (Or (the state of a disbeliever) is like the darkness in a vast deep sea), (24:40).
The first example is of the advocates of disbelief who have complex ignorance, while the second is about the followers who have simple ignorance.
Allah knows best.
