Mod note: The medieval depiction of fairies was actually very different from our modern version! They were extremely petty, and very likely to do absolutely horrible things to you if you offended them (and sometimes even if you didn’t). 

You were also supposed to never tell a fairy your true name, or they could use it to control you. 

Generally medieval people were scared of fairies. That’s probably even why we call them fairies: “Fair” means pretty, you had to say nice things about them or they’d become angry and hurt you.
