I think a year and a half ago if you told me where I would be right now I would NOT have believed it.

I’ve kept and made so many amazing friends here on tumblr. Gotten involved in fun plots and conversations. I spent today writing in the car between nursing school homework and am now at a pokemon tournament with friends and my bf, gotten picked up and spun around by him in a new city and laughing with everyone.

Just thankful for the people in all corners of my life right now.

Do you think that somewhere out there there might be people where the experiences of the replicants and the ‘disposable’ sleeves and the AFs are almost identical and they feel alone, like no one will help them? Do you think they worry if they have souls?

I have been thinking about this since about 10:30AM, yes.

Now that I’ve finished Altered Carbon, I think it would be fun to share one of my notes from my notes app that I’ve been writing on since I’ve started it. I’ve cried a lot about this book, and everything I’ve ever left behind has claw marks.

This book definitely has claw marks.

It includes all of my favorite moments and parts of the book down below :)

Things I love about book Kovacs

- he’s trying to quit smoking

- His hallucinations are of Jimmy and Virginia Vadura

- Him and Ortega don’t actually hate eachother that much in the beginning

- At first Takeshi doesn’t actually hate Bancroft either

- He’s genuinely confused about earth terms

- He was mad that at the Wei clinic they didn’t give him back his watch or his bandana, simply because he just bought it and he’d liked the watch

- He likes shopping

- He likes fruit juice???

- Gaslit Umou into being late to Psychasec because he needed to eat breakfast

- He deals with hangovers like a champ

- Started smoking in the construct once he remembered it had no real consequences in the real

- Understands female complexity/differences between male and female

- Knows how to handle gentle situations most of the time (victor talking about his daughter, Kristen talking about Ryker.)

- Quotes poetry from Quell

- Also enjoys poetry (ex; the carving on the bench at the faculty when he’s waiting for the doctor.)

- Slept for twenty hours after the Wei clinic??

- His emotion (though i do miss the scene where he’s drugged up outside of the raven talking to Quell. ‘250 years is long enough. It’s time to move on.’ ‘Never. You hear me? Never.’)

- His love for Sarah

- His attempts at smiling

- His explanation of personality frag!!!!

- Chapter 20 as a whole is so amazing (talking about Ryker- him and Curtis, bla bla bla, mostly just Elias and Kristen stuff.)

- Ramen just awakens something in him

- Actually very good at telling children’s stories to Ortega (like a dad.)

- Good at cracking jokes

- His interaction with the little girl in the second page of chapter 25???!?? (He shoots her with a little finger gun when he realizes she’s looking at him expectantly after seeing his weapon.)

- After the whole blown up building Kadmni thing (‘that’s fucking enough!’) he smokes because he just decides it’s not worth it

- Him and Trepp playing card games on the airship that Trepp had taught him

- He literally reaches for his Nemex every three seconds istg

- Remaining ‘innocent at the core’ -reileen

- Apparently having a very deep very drugged convo about cats in chapter 26

- Kovacs is a MUNCH

- Repeats the same Virginia Vidora quote over again. ‘We take what is offered. And sometimes, that must be enough.’

- Reileen always starting off her talks with him in Japanese because she thinks it unites them in a way

- Had to stop himself from calling reileen ray

- He actually DOES genuinely smile (ex; when Irene is exited about the limo)

- ‘I’m a sucker for family reunions.’ HE ACTUALLY DOES CARE (maybe it’s because him and Sarah never got to have one after he was taken out of the store.)

- Sleeping in the car (limo) so Irene can get laid

- The guilt/itchiness he has after relapsing into smoking

- Him and Trepp are actually friends and she insists that they go party, drink coffee, play card games together, ect.

- Considers trepp not getting into the envoys a ‘Lucky escape’

- Trepp n Kovacs playful teasing

- He missed Ortega when she left the Hendrix and didn’t come back. ‘I missed Ortega.’ Page 356

- Bancroft saying he’d been around for the RD’s of two of his children. (Going out of order back to the beginning)

- Doesn’t bullshit. Didn’t tell Irene it would pass when she was feeling hurt after being resleeved.

- It was nerve wracking to him to watch Irene code

- Reileen and Miriam slept together??

- Takeshis urge to be cruel

- Got anyoyed when Miller was tapping on the table and just flatted out his hand LMFAO

- When he heard he got a call he immediately asked if it was Ortega.

- Literally seconds before he’s about to get beat to death in the Panamrose he thinks about how bored he is

- Still, right before he about to die, he thinks about Ortega and calls her a ‘pocket of calm’

- He’s ready to die, not awfully upset about it because he knows Kristen has enough information to get Reileen and also because he knows Sarah will be released

- Trepp saves him in the Panama rose

- He talks to his dad mid fight after not hearing him forever. Before he killed Kadmin (calling him the ‘patchwork man’) he asks if he wants to say anything.

- He’s afraid to alter his virtual self because he thinks it’s not far away from what reileen and Bancroft do

- Sits on a forklift after the fight thinking. He’s weirdly soft.

- Claims that nothing hurt more then the realization that this would be his and Ortegas last moments together

- Held hands with her too

- Would’ve given anything to not have to dissolve what was growing between them.

- He loves her more in the book than he did in the show (and it’s making me sob.)

- He literally is arguing with himself when he is double sleeved

- He almost killed someone at 16 because he looked like his dad

- Also wanted to help the Elliot’s because of his family and his mom who was like Lizzy

- Absolutely does not want to talk about his past and his father/family

- Planning to get drunk because he doesn’t want to talk to himself sober

- Disappointed with his copy for smoking

- Takeshi fter the microsurgery is down at the lake with a little girl who seemed to ‘adopt him’

- He’s actually kind of heartbroken when him and Kristen’s relationship changes after he is resleeved.

- Makes his day that he can still make Ortega laugh before he convinces her to get him some stiff because he thought their dynamic was weird afterwards

- Before he and Reileen fall to their deaths he says, ‘When they ask how I died,' I said, 'tell them: still angry’ as well as ‘that’s fucking enough’

- Once his clone lost to rock paper scissors and was set to die, he asks if he wants him to tell Jimmy anything. I sobbed.

- Kept accidentally talking about Reileen in present terms after she died.

- He gave money to Irene once he’s about to leave for Lizzy. (‘I want there to be something clean at the end of all this, something I can feel good about.’)

- He held Irene after that.

- He attempts to laugh with Ortega before he goes

- His quote saying that no matter what you always leave alone. (‘Whatever world it is, whatever you've done there for better or worse, you always leave the same way. Alone.’)

- His last wishes are for Kristen to get Ryker to stop smoking once he’s out of the store

Stumbled on the series Altered Carbon a few days ago. I'm only five episodes in, but so far so good. The concept is exceptionally whumpy, but the execution is fairly standard for mainstream TV (handwaved injuries, trauma not really acknowledged). It's also a cyberpunk setting that goes heavy on world building, so naturally I love that.

(mini review with some spoilers beneath the cut)

Pros:

- Whumpy premise. Rebel/mercenary is taken out of prison by a rich guy who wants to hire him (and who almost verbatim claims him as his property)

- Interesting world, colorful and visually fun

- The concept of resleeving (transferring a person's consciousness into a new body) is used for both comedy and horror and it's great

- Episode 4 is like 30% torture chamber

- The way they illustrate "body death" as cheap makes a lot of sense to me for the the setting

- There's an AI hologram character and I love him

Cons:

- Has the gratuitous violence, nudity, and gore that's become typical for "adult" sci-fi. I don't mind it, (and I love the fight scenes) but half the time it seems like it's just for shock value

- excessive amount of sex scenes. Also makes half the female characters sex workers, and has a few instances of 'violence against women as a plot device'. The extent doesn't seem necessary aside from the "gritty" vibes these shows feel like they need to be taken seriously

- most of the romance feels forced

- oh and the male lead is literally drugged and sexually assaulted, but afterwards it's almost played like it was consensual??

- yeah yeah it's typical for sci-fi protagonists to be super tough and unflinching and it's part of the character but holy cow the lead has minimalist reactions to pain

#calico reviews #despite my complaints its still a good show and ill probably watch more #i know i said i loved the cheap death and hated the shock value in the same breath but im mostly just annoyed #adult media seems to feel the need to go out of its way to prove it's worth a 'mature' rating #and it just feels kinda lame and overdone #dont get me wrong i love violence and gore but its how its portrayed that matters #repo! the genetic opera gets away with it because it fits the sorta campy unapologetic tone #but most media just wants to be gritty and shocking #its not lost on me that the premise is similar to wildefire lol #im actually delighted #whump rec #altered carbon #tw sa mention #tw noncon mention #also a smaller complaint and i know i haven't finished it but #the world revolves around the ability to body swap and NOTHING pertaining to the trans community has even been hinted at #smh

Impossible Situation

Whumptober 2022: 20. Prisoner Trade, 26. Separated Fandom: Altered Carbon, Takeshi Kovacs Word Count: 1355 TW: Angst, Mentions of Family Violence, Forced to Return to Abusive Situation, Separated Loves

Takeshi Kovacs stood at the far end of the abandoned building just as he had been instructed. His long coat swirled gently around his legs as he turned in a slow circle, silently cataloging every entrance or possible point of escape. A quick getaway wouldn’t be necessary if the handoff went as planned. But since when has anything ever gone as planned for Takeshi?

He stilled when he felt a hand softly rest on the small of his back. Glancing over, the small smile of reassurance you were giving him felt like a knife in his chest. You should not be comforting him at this moment. You should be terrified, furious, or heartbroken. But instead, you were trying to make him feel better about what was about to happen. How pathetic was he?

As if reading his thoughts, you rested your head against his shoulder and said, “It’s okay, Tak. We’ll just follow the instructions and everything will be fine.”

“How is any of this ‘fine’?” he snarled. “How did I ever agree to any of this?”

“Because you didn’t have a choice,” you whispered, rubbing your hand gently across his back.

He sighed as he closed his eyes and leaned into your touch. You were right. As much as it infuriated and terrified him, he had been unable to find another way out of the current situation. Which was why he was about to hand you over to the worst crime syndicate in Bay City. Back to your family.

The only daughter of the head of the organization where women were viewed as nothing more than bargaining chips, your life had been nothing but pain and heartbreak for as long as you could remember. When money is no obstacle, no one cares about lasting damage done to a sleeve or even sleeve death. Though you were only 86 years old, Tak had been disgusted to learn you had stopped counting sleeves after your fiftieth one almost twenty years ago. Each new skin was necessary due to the severity of damage done to your previous one. It was no wonder you finally ran away.

But now he was willingly giving you back to them. To the people who had essentially killed you over and over again for almost a century. And when he had told you about it, you had agreed instantly.

You would be punished when they got you back home. Severely. The thought alone filled Tak with a white-hot rage that made it nearly impossible to maintain the mask of calm indifference he had adopted for the meet-up. Based on what you had told him about your past, there was a good chance you would be tortured, starved, and probably broken to the point of needing to be resleeved. But the only reason he agreed to any of this was that no matter how badly they punished you, they wouldn’t kill you. The same could not be said for Elliot.

When your family had finally discovered where you were and who you were with, they knew they couldn’t attack directly. But word on the street was that the Last Envoy had a friend who lived in Bridgetown with his family. Ava had called him in tears a few days ago saying that some men busted into their home and dragged Elliot away. You hadn’t needed to hear any more details; you already knew what had happened. And your suspicions had proven to be correct when Poe received instructions for a prisoner exchange the next morning.

And now here you were, waiting for your family to take you away from him. Tak had already lost so many people he loved in his life, he wasn’t sure how he was supposed to live with losing you too.

Drawing you into his arms, Tak leaned over and nuzzled his nose against your ear as he whispered, “I’ll come for you, I swear.”

But you quickly pulled away so you could turn to face him. Staring deeply into his eyes, you said, “If you love me, you won’t.”

“What? Why would I not try to save you from them?”

“Because you can try, but you won’t succeed. They’re too powerful and well-protected. And no matter what they do to me, I can endure it knowing you are safe somewhere out there. But if they kill you…. I can’t survive that. So, please Tak, let this be goodbye. Let me savor these last few months as the gift that they were and not taint my memories with your death. Please.”

Tak opened his mouth to respond, but the door at the other end of the building opened before he could. He grabbed you, spun you around, and pulled you tight against his chest, his gun suddenly pressed against the side of your neck directly in line with your stack. It was all part of the plan to make your family think Tak had captured you instead of the truth that you ran away, but he could still feel your heart beating wildly against him. Though if it was due to the fear of the gun against your skin or the presence of the men who had just walked in, he did not know.

There were seven of them, all armed with an assortment of weapons, all deadly looking. When the one who seemed to be in charge saw you, his eyes narrowed but he mumbled something to one of his men. Seconds later, the door opened again and an eighth man entered, dragging Elliot with him.

Tak tried not to react when he saw his friend, but it was nearly impossible. Elliot had clearly been tortured, blood soaked his clothes from the numerous cuts scattered across his body. His head had a large bloody wound that dripped down his face and he kept blinking as he attempted to keep it from dripping into his eye. And as he shuffled toward the other men, Tak noticed the way he favored his left side and winced slightly with every step.

Despite the danger if someone noticed, you discreetly slipped your hand into his and gave it a tight squeeze. He squeezed it back as tightly as he could, as if clinging to you hard enough could keep you by his side.

Yet, as per the instructions, you then took three steps forward, forcing Tak to release your hand for what was likely the last time. He noticed a single tear rolling down your cheek, but you didn’t move to wipe it away in the fear that it would draw attention to it. One of the men shoved Elliot forward and the two of you began walking toward the center of the space.

As you passed Elliot, Tak could just make out the sound of you whispering softly to him, “I’m so sorry. You should have never been involved with this.” But before he could respond, both of you had passed one another.

When Elliot made it across the room, he collapsed into Tak’s arms. Tak was caught off guard but managed to grab him in time. Up close, his injuries seemed even worse than Tak had initially thought but it didn’t look like anything that wouldn’t heal given time.

Tak glanced up just in time to see you make it to the other side of the warehouse. One of the men roughly grabbed your face between his fingers and shook you violently before throwing you to the floor. Your soft cry of pain made Tak see red. He was about to drop Elliot and draw his gun when he caught your gaze. Still laying on the floor, tears welling up in your eyes, you gently shook your head. You could tell what he was about to do and you were asking him not to.

So, he remained where he was. But as the men grabbed your arms, hauled you to your feet, and began shoving you toward the door, Tak made a silent promise to you. Despite what you had asked of him, despite your fears, he would come for you. And he would bring you back home with him.

I had to make sure you hadn’t disappeared,” he mumbled into your hair. You tightened your grip on him, “I’m not going anywhere. It’s me and it’s you. Forever.” He held you silently for a moment before muttering, “I had the dream again. About Stronghold.” You nodded solemnly. “Yeah, I still do too. But I remember they were really intense the first few nights after I was resleeved. Something about the adjustment process makes your memories more vivid, more real. But you should acclimate in a few days.” “How long have you been spun up? For me, it feels like I just lost you yesterday and that was already too long.” “Five months. Five months of missing you and dreaming of nothing else but being back in your arms again.” “Oh, Spire. Well, I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere, I promise.” “I know.” You trailed your fingers across his forearm, tracing the Envoy tattoo he had gotten there. You chuckled softly. “I don’t think the owner of this sleeve’s going to appreciate this.” “Who says I’m ever giving it back? Especially after seeing how much you seemed to enjoy it last night.” He nibbled at your collarbone, sending a shiver of pleasure through your sleeve. You let out a soft moan as you leaned your head back against him.
