The Gentlethem Pirate Final Look
I forgot to take most of the process pictures of the pants. Oops. Fairly standard with inseam pockets and a elastic back (I know it's not period but the kid's still growing).
Started with this burgundy linen blend that Joanns claims is purple. Cut to capri length with pockets. Screwed up the first pair because I drafted and cut them on the wrong grain and misremembered how much of my junk in the trunk the kid inherited. So I had to go back to the store for more.
Tumblr media
Second time was much more successful. Stiffened the front waist with leftover duck from the stays and ran elastic through the back and hems.

And I'm done with their costume. Now to sort mine.

New Jerkin. But since I’ve never shown this on Tumblr before, I should point out the things I have made.
Jerkin: Hard to tell from the angle, but there is tooling of a sword, bow, wolf head, wolf paw, hawk head, hawk claw. That is the “dark brown” stain from Tandy.
Wrist guards: Both have a wolf’s paw. Along with the tooling, I also decided to put in black ink in the depressions. Over time and weather, the black became less overt, only down in the deeper crevice, giving the inclusion a more subtle presence.
Sheath: Unlike the jerkin and wrist guards, this was painted (acrylic). The old sheath for the sword was comfortable and easy to wear, but it was also starting to get worn. So, I made a knew one, with a snake curled around a branch.
All pieces I have done were finished with Resolene. Word to the wise, always use rivets and straps/buckles when you can help it. I’ve tried lacing pieces up like shoes and it never worked out for me. That said, leather thread can be very effectively when used correctly.
The boots were from a renn faire vender called Just in Time Boots. The brown belt I bought, the black belt a friend made for me LONG ago. The brown shirt my wife made, the other clothes were bought.
Anyway, just thought I would share!

All Hallows was an awesome event with my guild, St. Margaret's (living history reenactment) The court chose a theme to be a Ministry of Viziers. Everyone dressed up in their best fantastical and magical outfits, and I took the opportunity to don my Loki outfit. It had been a long time since I had the chance to wear him, and it felt so good to be the God of Sass, Class, and Mischief. The event involved trick or treaters, and one little boy dragged his parents over to our encampment, practically screaming "I wanna see Loki, there's Loki" he was all dressed up in Spider-Man avengers clothes and was just ecstatic. He told me all about my actions, and Hel, and my brother Thor. I live for those moments. Even though I'm not portraying Marvel Loki, it's amazing to see kids just light up. Well, the horns are usually a dead giveaway...
Anyways, I signed up for a costume contest that evening, in the Master's Category. I've never entered a contest, mostly because I never feel I'm skilled enough. I made two friends, which helped with my anxiety. I was the first to go up, so I was holyshitting with anxiety.
Not only did I get a huge welcome when I came on stage, but the judges were incredibly impressed with my work. When I took off my cloak and showed the bindrune I painted on the back, everyone seemed to be even more ecstatic.
One judge saw my Mjölnir and was all impressed that I had carved it myself. I told him it wasn't part of the costume, but of my faith.
I had gotten second place and my dingus self was all "Wait, what? Oh that's me!" After the applause, just sort of stood there like a dork, and exclaimed (without realizing there was a moment of silence) "I never won anything in my life"
And there was an "aww" from the first row and judges, as I scurried away with my trophy.
That night my guild members and I celebrated my win and the next day I was voluntold to aid in a trial at the Queen's court. Which I did, causing quite a stir and some blasphemy. The trial ended well, And I flirted with the Queen as she gave me a favour. But not a clover to make a request at her court in the future. Darn.
Now for some photos and stuff! (Finally)

Oh, I was also awarded an unofficial official title of Aaron non Grata. Because of shenanigans.

Making of The Gentlethem Pirate: The Shirt
The elder child and I are going to the Maryland Renaissance Festival and they want to be a pirate, but gender not confirming, and wealthy.
So, being a good reasonable mother I got to work.
Found a white dotted cotton lawn at the store. It's sheer af, and the slubs are pretty regular.
Tumblr media
Going mostly off Morgan Donner's excellent tutorial, I cut into several rectangles. 2- 4 inch strips for gussets, cuffs, and collar. 1-half their bust measurement+2 inches for the body. 1-their bicep measurement+4 inches, cut in half, for the sleeves.
Tumblr media
The neck gussets are 4 inch squares, folded in half. I sewed these into the t shaped neck slit I cut in the body piece. (This was probably too big but I made it work.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also used a small strip (maybe an inch wide total) to face the neck slit. Next, I attached the sleeves to the shoulders. The niblet didn't want puffy so no gathering. I attached another 4 inch square gusset into the armpit for mobility, and sewed the sleeve and side closed, leaving a 8ish inch opening at the bottom for hips.
Tumblr media
Next, attached the collar and cuffs, both were a pair of 4 inch wide rectangles sewed together and flipped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And voila. Just needs cuff buttons.

I'm idly considering making a Creature in the Darkness costume for rennaisance fairs because if I get the blackout fabric effect even close to right, it would be 1) very comfortable for any weather and 2) extremely funny
BUT
I'm fucking DEVASTATED that this umbrella is from a company based in Australia, and that shipping it to me would be about 2.5x the cost od the umbrella itself, because its PERFECT but also literally from the opposite side of the planet

All movie mobians in a rennaisance fair
Sonic has read a little bit about the era.
But when the bros randomly encounter a renaissance fair, they’re so fuckin confused. They’re convinced they’ve somehow either traveled to another world, or gone back in time.
They ask around and learn what’s happening. They feel out of place because they’re the only ones not in costumes. Thankfully, a nice lady gives them nice shirts so they can fit in.
There’s a couple guys that joke within earshot that they should hunt Tails for his tails, but they quickly learn that that is a sensitive subject and they shouldn’t joke about it. Most of them apologize to Tails profusely, but another guy calls Tails and his brothers soft because they got offended, and that it’s just a harmless joke.
Naturally, Knuckles challenges the dude to a duel. Knuckles was given some armour (despite him saying it wasn’t needed) and a sword and shield, and he went with it. He looked amazing. He won. The guy is banished from the kingdom.
Sonic and Tails get to try some armour too. The crowd is astonished that Tails didn’t crumble under the weight of chainmail. Normally a kid his size would be pinned to the floor! Sonic had some trouble moving around, but he was fine.
They got to have a feast, and they enjoyed their time!

OK, but why is Agatha wearing slashed sleeves in the 1400's? Don't leave us hanging.
I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED
(images and historical costuming infodump under the cut because you have unfortunately unearthed ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
first and foremost: it's some real
1519 hot-girl shit
that's why
(all the early-rennaisance girliepops were cutting up their clothes and showing off their camicia/shift/léine)
secondly (with a TL;DR at the bottom)
since this is a mixed-era fantasy setting, i wanted to really show that off with some NIFTY GARB.
we're spanning about 1350-1520, but MOST people are sitting comfortably in the middle to late 1400s, with some purposeful exceptions*. everyone is wearing something different, there's a lot of emphasis on crossover between countries and routes of trade that literally only make sense in a fantasy setting.
(*for example, people make fun of the mage for wearing a houppelande, because it's definitely out of fashion by 1450 and i thought it would be a fun little parallel to draw for his robin-hood costume.)
WITH ALL OF THAT CONTEXT
i made agatha's parents merchants (i thought it was a neat little nod to the traveling christmas party thing from the books, and it drew them a little bit closer to the inciting incident) which means she's simultaneously able to get the absolute cutting edge of fashion for the era if she wants, and under the scrutiny of her parents (who are both in a public-facing and extremely social-currency-based profession)
there's kind of a background argument in one of the earlier chapters between her and penny about it: agatha's in trouble with her mother for wearing too many slashes in her sleeves, penny thinks slashed sleeves and petticoats are superficial and impractical (the new modern hoopskirt is where it's at, if you wear skirts!), agatha scoffs because why in the world would she have a saffron-dyed, embroidered shift if she wasn't going to SHOW IT TO PEOPLE???
the thing about slashed/paned sleeves, in general, is that they were considered kind of uncouth at the time. slutty, one might argue! they were designed specifically to reveal small sections of your shirt or chemise, and if you're showing off your expensive undergarments too much people might talk.
it would have been considered very fashionable for agatha to have a few slits in her sleeves-
(sometimes women wore them in their bodices, but agatha wears a fancy schmancy stomacher in this so that's not relevant.)
-but too many of them in a single garment would start to suggest things about her character, in the attitude of the era. given that her parents have hangups about her behavior and propriety, it's supposed to have kind of a "YOUNG LADY YOU ARE NOT GOING OUT IN THAT" vibe. it's the kind of thing people were banned from entering churches for.
her mother is irritated because even if it's fashionable, it's not 1500s classy fashionable, and i'm hoping it kind of carries the same narrative weight as them finding her shoplifting habit very common and disappointing, but not actually punishing her for it because their disapproval and her perceived failure to conform are punishment enough. (purple varnish!)
TL;DR-
compared to the 21st-century idea of modesty agatha's outfit as i envision it would be considered downright matronly, but for the time period?
it's basically the equivalent of wearing an open white button-down shirt to show off a cute (and grotesquely expensive) designer bralette.
(and everyone has an opinion about it and she's getting pretty sick of constantly being posed for portraits and told what to do by people who've already decided her entire future for her.)

Taking the advice of my lecturers from my mid semester review yesterday, I went home and did another mind map of my theme. However, this time, I chose to do a visual mind map using photographs I found on the Internet to help me pinpoint what I imagined.
Looking further into my theme of pheonix, I decided to focus on the rebirth aspect of the legend. At first, I simply looked up the word "rebirth" and chose some images that stuck out to me.
These first images inspired me to look at personal identity and rebirth, which led me to look at performers such as drag queens and other theatrical performances. As an actor myself, I find the process of leaving yourself behind to become a different person on the stage exhilarating. The feeling perfectly encompasses the rebirth of a pheonix. From putting on the costumes and makeup to altering your mannerisms, you morph into an entirely new person. This is something I would like to look at more deeply for my project.
Delving further into the rebirth theme, I was interested in the rennaisance. I decided to look into stage productions of the rennaisance writer William Shakespeare. Although I quite like the dramatic staging as it reminds me of classic Italian rennaisance paintings, I'm not as drawn to it as I am to the middle section as it is overall less vibrant in terms of colour and performance.
Tumblr media
Thinking further, I also realised that performing on stage not only gives a sense of rebirth but is also in itself a very temporary thing. Unlike film, performances on stage exist only within the moment it is happening. Even if the show has multiple runs, it will never be performed exactly the same. The only thing that immortalises a stage show is memory, provided it hasn't been filmed.
