KAIJUNE DAY 17: DEAD MAN’S HAND

It came from hubris.

Ours, Theirs.

History will record that we were right. When this conflict is over it will be clear that we did what we had to do.

Hubris. Our own confidence that we understood the purpose, the nature of the conflict we found ourselves in. That we could outthink a mind so alien.

Hubris, that the chaotic storm of our planet, that the barely leashed insanity of humanity was a predictable variable in a journey of exploration? Conquest? Research?

So, so primitive, so limited.

You may believe the lies you tell yourself about who you are. We did. We do. We don't lie, it is the truth, it is a better truth, a necessary one. What choice did we have but to form the Academy, our little school of horrors. What choice but to gather volunteers, kicking and screaming? What option but to send those successful ones into the Genesis Engine again and again, to fight and die and fight again? What choice but to send the unsuccessful to the pit, where the ichor flowed and the ashes rained?

Could you have done any better?

Hubris. The Black Ichor flowed, we plotted, the Twisted Father schemed, and the Dead Man’s Hand came for all of us.
