True/false: you think that flags shouldn’t have writing on them

absolutely true. this is my most reactionary position, thje american vexillology association pamphlet is right about most things but especaily this one. a flag should aim to represent its polity through visual symbolism. if you have to start writing, you're no longer using visual symbolism! of course how bad this is varies. the absolute worst case is just putting the name of the thing in big block letters like the US state flags all do. that shit is pathetic, just acknowledging that you've comprehensively failed at creating something striking and recognizable that symbolizes your polity. on the other hand, more subtle lettering that could be removed without compromising the flag's core visual identity--like iran's takbir or brazil's ordem e progresso--is much better and doesn't have too big an impact on how i evaluate a flag

Do you use patterns to make your own doll clothing? Was it historically common to make doll clothing at home?

Like other people's patterns? Sometimes I do, since commercial patterns for antique dolls do exist (especialy French fashions). But I'll often do the Duct Tape Patterning method- wrap doll in plastic wrap, cover with duct tape, draw seam lines, cut off, add seam allowance, make mockup, proceed as usual. Saves time in the mockup process as opposed to working off a pattern designed for one very specific doll in one very specific collection that's the same height as my doll but has a totally different body type.

Doll bodies were very much not standardized back then, except within specific companies. And the very common stuffed kid leather bodies can suffer from settling over time where the sawdust inside shifts and changes the shape. So if a pattern was made for a 17" on a kid body, that could end up not fitting my 17" doll on a wooden body AND from a different dollmaker. For bodices, at least, I therefore prefer making my own pattern most of the time.

As for home doll sewing, it was extremely common! While commercial doll clothes have existed at least since the 18th century, dressing dolls has long been a way for little girls to hone their sewing skills. It could also be a form of artistic expression, of course, for those children and their older female relatives (and some male, I'm sure).

There could also be a mixture of both clothing sources in a given doll's wardrobe. Trousseaux like this one:

Many homemade doll wardrobes include clothes made from only one or two patterns, which is deeply relatable. Why make more work for yourself once you have a pattern you know will fit the doll?

A million thanks to my friend @queerdo-mcjewface for letting me know I finally can get a wide and petite rollator in purple! For the longest time I have bemoaned not getting the full range of color options the standard and petite rollators have. Once you need wider widths the colors dwindle to red or gray-blue. Now at least a lavender purple is available which is the color I have been dreaming of.

Yeosang is your boyfriend. Seonghwa is your roommate. Hongjoong is your best friend since preschool. One day you came home to find all three of them hovering over your dirty laundry basket inhaling the scent of your underwear. Can they explain what they were up to in a way that makes them completely innocent of doing exactly what they were caught doing?

There were three perverts standing around the laundry basket in your bedroom. Huddled together, your best friend Hongjoong, roommate Seonghwa, and boyfriend Yeosang had been sniffing away at a pair of your underwear. They were so engrossed that they apparently missed your greeting called from the front door on arrival. When you announced your presence in your bedroom doorway Hongjoong screamed and as a group they shot about six feet in the air being caught at their activity. Seonghwa looked guilty and Yeosang froze. You stared at them and they stared at you.

Bordering on yelling, nervously Yeosang claimed, “We can explain in a way that makes us completely innocent of exactly what it looks like we were doing.”

“Okay, try me. Please tell me this isn’t what it looks like.” The trio audibly relaxed a little until you narrowed your eyes and amended, “But make it believable.”

“It isn’t, I promise,” Seonghwa pleaded.  

You snorted. “Isn't what it looks like, or isn't believable?”

There was laughter at your comment. Yeosang cut it off quickly at your look though. He could be bold sometimes, but was not a fool.

Ever the rules lawyer, Hongjoong hedged, “What does it look like?” His attempt at innocent doe eyes did nothing for you.

You took in a deep breath while pinching the bridge of your nose. “I’m going to say this nicely on the very slim chance there truly is a reasonable explanation for you three to be standing beside my dirty laundry and huffing my underpants, but what is going on, guys? You need to tell me, now.”

The woman you were speaking to encouraged you to tell more. “Go on, what else?”

Keeping your voice low, you added, “Well, Yunho's fingers, they are so large. It is a tough fit. Sometimes the stretch is too much.”

She gave a sympathetic nod, “I see.”

“I want to succeed where his previous partners have failed. He just wants to be able to slide his fingers in with ease. It seems like such a simple thing that would make him so happy but I need help.” A sad look crossed your face. Pleasing your boyfriend meant the world to you and this was something you had been trying to solve for quite a while now.

The lady was reassuring. “Maybe they gave up too soon. I believe I can be of assistance.” You smiled gratefully hoping there was a solution after so many attempts and false leads. “No matter his size, we do have models to fit in many colors,” she continued. “Let me bring you the extra-large range and you will be able to take something home for him today.”

“Thank you so much,” you gushed, “Yunho will be very happy when he opens his present. He has always spoken of wanting driving gloves but nothing at the market stalls ever fit. Driving gives him so much pleasure but in these colder months he complains. As often as he praises the seat warmer, he wishes the steering wheel had the same feature.”

The saleswoman beamed behind her counter, pleased to have helped. “It is a good thing you came to this department store then, isn't it? Once you decide on a pair I will wrap them for you.”

Purchase complete, you headed home smiling to yourself knowing how thrilled Yunho would be slipping on the first pair of gloves that actually might fit since reaching adulthood.

You have been dating almost a year now and he wanted to mark the occasion with something really special in honor of your birthday and he had just what you had been longing for. He understood you were curious if you were up to the challenge. The thought of getting to be the man who provided this first in your life left him restless and eager to get on with the evening.

He could see the excitement when he whispered in your ear what his plans were once he took you home. Tonight you would go all out and try something new. It was difficult not to speed through the rest of the meal in anticipation over what was to come. Your face displayed such open desire and Seonghwa could not help but feel an equal interest.

Abandoning plans for dessert, the bill was paid quickly and you rushed to his car. Looking for all the world like two young people in love, for that’s what you were, you kept glancing at each other and grinning. Once home, he escorted you to the bedroom where he presented you with the gift. From his hints at the restaurant you already knew what you would be getting up to and it had you salivating. Kissing him passionately before unwrapping, you marveled once you saw it in person. “I had no idea it was so big.”

“You flatter me,” Seonghwa laughed, “it is not like it is The Titanic.”

“It practically is.” Tracing the outline you couldn’t help but gasp as you took in all the details. “And so hard!” Although you had not opened the large box yet the picture on the outside told you a long-held dream was about to come true. Tonight you would enjoy an 18+ toy you had your eye on from that special shop you liked to browse together. “Seonghwa, I can't believe you. You spent a fortune on me!”

ATEEZ Reaction to Your Chest Being Uneven

The reader has been hiding from their romantic partner the fact that their chest is more developed on one side than the other. I present one way the members of ATEEZ might react. This is not smut but instead written to be reassuring from someone who has the experience of visible asymmetry and it has never been an issue.

Hongjoong would deliver a chaste kiss above each side when you confess your anxiety about being uneven to him. Hongjoong then would promptly fall asleep on your chest and much later wake up, happy to be there no matter how great your disparity.

Seonghwa would insist he is not with you for your body but for your personality. “No matter what, I still I think you are perfect just as you are.” As you stare into his flawless eyes, you understand completely.

Yunho would respect your emotional impact from being lopsided. “I am not going to tell you how to feel about your chest and will support you if you wish to have cosmetic reduction on one side or enlargement on the other. Please know though, that I find your appearance charming. You don't love me any less for my uneven smile and I feel exactly the same way about you.”

Yeosang would be over the moon and have a lot to say. “You are warning me because you are going to let me see your chest? How could I have any complaints about that step in our relationship?” Ever the scientist, Yeosang would also be a researcher and come back to you with facts. “Now that I have read up on the subject, I learned it is common to be asymmetrical. Estimates vary, but one doctor cited 90% of people with developed breasts have at least a 15-20% difference in volume, and truly if your measurement is precise enough nobody is actually identical. A mismatch can happen to any gender if muscles get a regular workout on one side more than the other. The difference may be more noticeable on you than others, but it is very normal and nothing to feel bad about.”

San would pointedly tell you some of his stuffed animals are small and others are large, but they are all equally loved and worth cuddling.

Mingi would have nothing to say if you draw it to his attention, merely joyfully diving back in to shower you with snuggly affection. Despite wanting to be supportive, Mingi would probably never even notice the size difference between sides of your chest.

Woooyoung's delighted and overly loud proclamation that a variety pack is a plus would be overheard by the whole dorm. Then comes the shared laughter as he discovers, “Look at this. I can make my hand look big or small depending which side I hold it over!”

Jongho would be warmly reassuring with the confirmation, “I love everything about you. How could I not love your chest as well?”

Seriously, though. And it's not like the nerve damage from this sort of thing is ever likely to magically fix itself. (Which applies equally well to so many things. 😒)

At least in this particular case, the possible alternative of gabapentin was mentioned. Because, as closely related as they are, that is apparently officially considered lower risk? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe people haven't been mixing it with heroin--and who knows what else--as much, or that hasn't gotten as much attention? Idk. They're both anticonvulsants, and it's hard to see why anyone would want their side effects.

Though, from what I have read? Gabapentin is not just heavier on the side effects, research hasn't found it to work as well specifically for phantom limb garbage. That's before we even get to possibly yanking the other medication working in conjunction with it.

But yeah, at least so far it isn't sounding so much like full on "you're lucky to get the OTC stuff, whiner who is likely making this up in the first place". But, again? We'll have to see.

Nobody should be placed in this kind of position, though. It's messed up.

🔥Meal replacement drinks/bars

I wish they were more frequently discussed as a disability aid? I have depression and something in the general vicinity of an eating disorder, and meal replacement products have been incredibly valuable to me in getting enough calories to function. I suspect that the larger part of the utility that soylent and the like add to the world is to people in similar situations.

I’m mostly talking about how they’re discussed in the broader culture and not how they’re advertised. I recognize that there are legal impediments to marketing them as a disability aid. But it’s still frustrating that the marketing and the rest of the culture agree that anyone who uses meal replacements is a very specific kind of person who’s very unlike me and uses meal replacements for a very different reason. I would have started using them a couple of years earlier if I had realized that they could be a solution to the kinds of problems I was having.

Did the actresses in Crimson Peak wear wigs/hair extensions or was that their actual hair?

Wigs!

Jessica Chastain is a natural redhead and wears wigs for most of her non-ginger roles (interestingly, so is Hiddles, but he dyed his actual hair for the part). Mia Wasikowska, though she goes blonde a lot, naturally has brown hair. And the reason they didn't both just dye their hair is probably the same reason 99% of actresses in period dramas use wigs and hairpieces.

Namely, western women pre-1920s usually had much longer hair than their modern counterparts.

Lucille's hair is actually floor-length, though it's difficult to tell because you only see it down for a hot second and at least part of it is usually blocked from view. But her braid is almost down to her knees- and braiding takes up a significant amount of length.

I actually sourced this myself but thought people might like to be aware of it -- funkittoys is a small business selling unique and sustainably-made sex toys, including a toy called the "NoFrillDo" designed to be particularly affordable. They came to my attention via a post about their "sliding scale" nofrilldos, which are a $14-minimum but otherwise pay-what-you-can toy; those are currently sold out but come back into stock occasionally, and I felt the spirit of the shop was well worth a namedrop on RFM. Just a heads up for anyone who still has a Neopets account, Jellyneo is reporting “Neopets Being Actively Hacked, Passwords + Emails Accessible” and their coverage can be found at the link.

We have some serious news today. Thanks to an anonymous tipster, we've been made aware that the database and source code for Neopets.com has been breached, and over 69,000,000 user accounts have been exposed. Full account information, such as email address, passwords, gender, IP addresses, countries, and birthdays are available for sale on a hacker website.

What Can I Do to Protect My Account? Due to the nature of live access being available, we do not recommend changing your account password or PIN at this time. (The hacker and/or buyer could just get a new copy of whatever you changed your password to with their live access.) We will post an update when it's safe to update your account credentials. This isn't the first time the Neopets.com site has been breached, and is likely not the last. We cannot emphasize enough that you should be using unique passwords across every website. If you share your Neopets.com password with any other websites, those accounts are highly at risk. Paying $95k to hack Neopets accounts seems pricey, but the value in a purchase like this will be the ability to test your Neopets.com password on many other sites in brute force attacks. If you share your Neopets.com password with any other website, update the password on those other sites immediately.

Your profile didn't allow messages, so you don't have to publish, just fyi! They do sell normal paper-sized colored plastic specifically for laying over sheets of paper to help kids with dyslexia and dyscalculia. My mom got some for my brother in law to help him while he was in EMT school. That's how I knew that the green strip in the magnifying bar would help me. So, those sheets would probably be great for computer screens. You can tape them to the computer of a kid who needs help. And the kit comes with several colors, since the color that helps the most will be individual to each kid, so you can find the one that helps them the most!

Thank you so much for this information! Your original post on the green line magnifier tool made me aware of something I had never encountered before but sounds like it can be very beneficial to anyone needing that help.

Can you explain what you mean by LED embellishments and/or provide a link please?

Referencing this post. I found my LED rollator accessories under the name 'light up bike handle streamers' and this is what they look like. Mine came from Amazon back in 2015 and that listing is no longer working and a search does not bring up something similar anymore.

Don’t forget to reset a smart TV before you get rid of it.

Just did some tech support at a distance for my aging parents. Today mom was concerned she could not watch Netflix because it said the account was already in use. We are not a family who shares passwords so she was worried. I walked them through the account to change the password and while in there had dad look to see what devices had been accessing the account. Two were theirs but another was in a different state but the same brand of TV they have bought for years so I asked if they had taken an old one to the dump and they had a few months back. 

Nothing had been signed out of before disposal so that is how somebody was happily enjoying the cartoons mom said she had been seeing for the past few weeks as “in progress” on her account. She just kept thinking it was a glitch. This also explained how they got charged for a kids’ movie rental on their Amazon account a few weeks back before I had them change that password. 

I am glad the TV got another life if it still could be of use to someone but you can not count on them to sign out for you. Please remember to reset the TV to default factory settings before passing on a smart television and offer to help others in your life do that, especially if they needed your help to set the TV up in the first place.
