I've been re-reading Fyre and have got to the bit where Jenna's recounting her Journey. Frankly it raises a tonne of questions, and I would love have had a few chapters from Jenna's perspective about what in hell was happening. Wonder if anyone here has any theories about WTF was going on.
First, Jenna's royal mother, Queen Cerys, her ghost becomes physically real, as does her grandmother's. I mean I suppose the Substantial Spirit of Queen Etheldreda gives precedent here, but she had to drink an Alchemical potion and wait a while for the effects to set in, Jenna and her ghostly ancestors just stepped onto a boat. What does this mean about the place they ended up, if ghosts can apparently come back to life there, is it like the Septimus Heap equivalent of the After-Life.
Second, most places in Septimus Heap have a real world equivalent, afterall in is meant to be our world in the distant future, so where in the Queens' native country meant to be? From the brief description it sounds sort of like Venice, but I'm not sure how it can be, every other place from the real world seems to have been destroyed long before the time of Magyk.
Third, I can't tell if the fact that this country is super sexist is good writing, giving a good reason for the Queens to come to the Castle, or canon breaking, how would they have the opportunity to leave.
Fourth, why is the existence of this mysterious country where ghosts return to life, and this bizarre Venice-esque city, never brought up again? And for that matter, why do we never hear of the Port Palace again. As a writer Angie Sage is generally in the habit of slotting mysterious things into a book, and explaining them in later books. I realise Fyre is the last Septimus Heap book, but there are three more books that make up the TodHunter Moon trilogy, three books in which Ancient Ways, like the Queen's Way, feature prominently, but these alternative exits to the Queen's Way are not, to my knowledge, brought up again.
obviously annabeth is always playing chess while the rest of camp is playing checkers but the way she watches percy in the bathroom scene and says she's been waiting to see if "something like this" would happen to see if she wanted him for capture the flag, and you think she means something that will confirm his godly parent and show he's a powerful asset to the team, but then you get to capture the flag and annabeth positioning him as bait for clarisse and it's like oh, the "this" she was waiting for was actually just him beefing with clarisse so she could use their vengeance to keep them from winning the game. and THEN she pushes him into the water to confirm his godly parent because she knew all along. she fuckin played him so good she even played us so good that's MY daughter of athena
