What’s this about koro Q and karmagisa?

Okay strap yourself in. This became a Karma sexuality meta. warning for koro q spoilers.

This centres around Bitch Sensei and her 'charm' ability. Note that Nagisa 'charms' (read: he doesn't actually, everyone just thought he was hot) 3E in chapter two, but what I'm talking about here is the sort of mind-control ability, which is consistently represented by a heart around the head.

This section of the panel speaks clearly. You can only be charmed if you're attracted to women. Hell, "are you gay" is right there (I don't have access to the Japanese rn so I can't double check the exact wording).

We see later that Karasuma is unaffected. Again, I can't check the exact wording right now, but I imagine the original Japanese is pretty similar. I think here, the implication is that Karasuma is somewhere on the ace spectrum.

We get to a point in the chapter where all the 3E men are enchanted. It works on EVERYONE except Karma and Nagisa. Now why might that be, hm? So at this point, the inference we can take from this is that neither of them are attracted to women.

(okay, Korosensei was pretending to be infected, but he has magic big bad powers so he doesn't count)

She even throws them off a tower for it. Maybe Irina moonlights a writer for the CW.

Amazingly they still continue to argue about it when everyone's safe. They address that it's a little abnormal for Karasuma to not have been affected. But... Karma and Nagisa are just stood there, in the same boat, and this is never addressed. Interesting.

So that's Evidence One, right.

So Evidence Two, which is the juicy bit, is actually on the last ever page of Koro Q. And lemme tell you, I bought this book the day it came out (physically, in Japan) and my jaw dropped. Yet nobody really knows about it and it's honestly upsetting.

Basically, Nagisa says something wholesome and Okajima and Mimura are like 'oh no he's hot'. Which I mean, Nagisa's adorable I can't blame the guys. What's important to note is that they use the exact same design as with Bitch Sensei, which implies it follows similar rules.

But then we get to the holy panel.

Yes, Karma is infatuated. With Nagisa. Official adjacent material where Karma is explicitly attracted to Nagisa. I think it's pretty obvious why this is kind of a big deal. And also why I headcanon him as gay nowadays.

But, you might point out, he said he liked Okuda in Kyoto!

...Okay what you have to understand about Japanese is it's reaaaaally vague and contextual sometimes. So when you translate the meaning to English, it comes off with a slightly different nuance. In other words, I think it's a little stronger with implied romance in English.

Maehara says "Ki ni naru ko iru?" which is translated as 'is there a girl you're interested in?'. And yes, this is accurate, but even despite the obvious context the phrase 'ki ni naru' can also mean 'to care about', 'feel anxious about', or even interest in a non-romantic way. So there's that to contend with.

Either way though, Karma's reasoning is that she can make him chloroform or something. What he actually says in a nutshell is like 'the scope of my schemes can widen'. I don't reaaaally take that as much of a romantic admission. I stan their friendship though, to be clear.

TLDR, that tangent aside, to me at least this is the single (close to) canon 'no way of denying it' instance of Karma being attracted to anybody. And it's glorious. Hence, Karmagisa is at least half canon in Koro Q.

I say half because we never get any kind of confirmation that Nagisa likes Karma. All we know is he's not straight.

(I mean, there's also that time where the uh official card game chose to promote an event with shirtless Karma and Nagisa posed beside each other, and Isogai looking fucking horrified. They made it worse when, in the game, a line I can only translate as "what do you want to do with me Karma?" appeared beside said shirtless image of Nagisa).

i'm working on getting better at organizing my thoughts, so like. allow me a sec to describe this absolute chaos zone of a wip

essentially!! our two protags - Victor and Amelia, childhood friends who grew apart - are reunited under tragic circumstances (the mysterious death of an old friend) (a special tool we'll use for later) and very quickly have to learn how to act as a team again when they're literally being chased by something they didn't even realize existed (aka a big ol hellhound (or something v adjacent, i'm working out the Lore)) --

and it turns out they're being chased because they're the children of legacy "hunters", so to speak, ones who had completely given up the fight. by said former hunter / co-founder of the Revenants (a fucked up harbinger of justice kinda cult sitch), Jules Herrick. Victor and Amelia end up a.) rescued by the bare bones of a new organization called Purgatory, more dedicated to researching and protecting creatures and humans alike and understanding Things In General -- but also like, they've got a new shitshow of a job.

(One of the founders of Purgatory is Jules' ex-bff, Simon, who was one of the last regular people to see him alive decades ago; along with his daughter Rosalie who's old enough to remember Jules before he went fucking haywire)

and b.) because of how they end up stopping their pursuer (a rogue demon-type and its hound), Victor and Amelia become kind-of infamous (as the Soul Snatcher and the Hound Thief, respectively) and inextricably soul-linked -- by harboring the purged soul of the demon and the spiritual repossession of its guard dog (lot to unpack here). this will have some fun and sexy consequences for them both

so over the course of it - and maybe other installments, WE'LL SEE - it's about the formation and work and survival of Purgatory, in order to like -- idk stop the Revenants from going scorched Earth on literally everything and everyone. probably get some condemned souls out of ""purgatory"" (lmao). there's more characters too, both within Purgatory and the Revenants, and on the outside through other's stories. they are all near and dear to me, even the ones who I would love to see in a wood chipper.

there's found family (both affectionate and derogatory)!! there's action and adventure and horror! there's creature and ghost/spirit lore i'm still splicing together! there's so many gay people! there's tragedy and humor and catharsis, queerplatonic relationships and redefining love in all its forms and toxic doomed old man yearning!! WHO KNOWS

to me: Purgatory (the organization) is like if the Men of Letters ever had admitted to doing anything wrong, and wanted to be less wrong and more for the world they live in (and also actually trusted non-humans).

hello, and happy wincest wednesday!  i’ve got a question that’s not exactly wincest, but related to your latest fic, which has a running theme of objectification:

what were dean’s thoughts (if any) on men and women objectifying him when he was a man?  how have they changed, now that dean’s had the experience of being a woman?

happy wincest wednesday to you, bud! I'll take a 'cest-adjacent q, let's think about this--

I mean, generally, I think Dean's... very aware of the objectification, even though he's a guy. From women it's not a big deal because women aren't at threat, and he likes women, so he grins and enjoys it. I mean, it is a general bonus on a number of levels if women find him hot -- on a personal level flattering (and maybe a chance of a lil sumpin sumpin, and his tastes are Broad so he's not like offended if a lady wants him to get up in there) -- on a professional level, it's no secret that attractive people have an easier time gaining trust/succeeding. So, a win there.

With men -- different story. It's actually rare for a 'out' gay man to interact with Dean on screen -- regardless of what we might say about various characters, lol -- and so all of this is inference. But his defensiveness about his looks, with men, is... really obvious. Like, you're telling on yourself, sweetheart. All those times he leaps to a sexual connotation to make male assailants uncomfortable... sure, sometimes it works, but why is that the first thing to come to mind? Well, look at any picture of Jensen age 15--25 and you've got your answer. So: I think objectification from men when he was a twink was probably mostly subtle but he definitely reacted to it in a hostile/fear way. (Fold a sex worker backstory in and the hostile/fear thing would probably still be there, but now with that Dean-as-object glassface leer we know so well.) Dean can take down nearly any guy who might be objectifying him in a targeted/attacking way, but still: it feels different, from a guy, and it's silly to pretend like that might be otherwise.

THEN he gets changed into a ladybro, and not just briefly but for days and days, and the thing a reader might have noticed in that story is that he's not at all uncomfortable with dealing with the public, as a lady, and in fact with men -- it's pretty easy. He walks that pretty face out in public and the leering and flirting and the leaning-in-too-close -- he just takes it, deals with it, and more to the point uses it. Dean, the object, turned into the ultimate object of a pretty girl -- he's not dumb, he knows what's happening here. In some ways I think it might be easier: the girl-body isn't technically him, so when it's being objectified he can hold his mind somewhat apart from the experience.

Just in general, I'm fascinated by Dean in object-mode. (Who's surprised, lol.) There's something entirely visible that happens where he clocks a threat, and you can see the defense mechanism kick in where his body's there and it's staring flatly with a faint smile at the threatener, and you can see his mind like five paces back, watching this from afar -- but at the same time the very fact of the defense mechanism means that the threat is a legit problem. In this story, through like the first... five days or whatever it was, I think he's doing that almost all the time. There are a few moments where he and Sam are doing 'normal' bro-bantz where he comes back into himself, but otherwise he feels to me like he's gone fully opaque and distant because -- to be forced to be such an overt object is a violation he hasn't had too often, before. (Other than hell, maybe, but then the point of hell was that he was a subject, he was being asked over and over again to make an active choice and even the refusal to do so was an active choice -- here he's given no choice, about anything, and the objectification is almost complete.) I feel this attitude particularly in that scene, idk if you remember, where Sam has his panic/anger tantrum and completely destroys their motel room looking for clues, and Dean just sits there and watches him, calm.

To pull it back to wincest, for wincest wednesday: one thing that I think is extremely wonderful about Sam/Dean is that -- while Sam obviously finds the various women attractive enough and is willing to fuck them -- and while Sam, in a 'normal' wincest scenario, would find Dean hot as well after passing through the incest barrier -- I don't think Sam ever, ever wants to treat Dean as an object. At least not the Sam I would ever write or want to play wincest with. Sam loves Dean as a subject, as someone who actively chooses Sam back, who loves him and not just as a 'required' thing. Notice how much Sam hates it anytime Dean does something just because Dean thinks he's supposed to -- how Sam urges Dean to think for himself, and question things -- how Sam's flat-out horrified when Dean just wants to lay down and let the world happen to him. Dean may have perky b-cups at the moment and a spell might be crushing him down flat, but Sam doesn't want that -- and it helps, I think, for Dean to see that (as he eventually starts to do), and helps him not think of himself that way, too.

i drove to the springs yesterday and took this picture in front of club q before the group of mourners came back from marching around the block. it was hugely sad but also beautiful to watch so many strangers come together and just love.

while i was finishing signing a group card and getting our flowers/candles together from the car, a man leaned in and told my friend that she “better call the police.” as she started dialing, we all started walking back over to the vigil to see what was up. down the road a ways in the adjacent parking lot, a man was waving three enormous flags. each flag blasted something about “TRUMP 2024″ and “GO TRUMP” or “LET’S GO BRANDON” or whatever the fuck... essentially three massive pro-Trump flags held by this guy attempting to break up the vigil. he was screaming at us-- “biden is YOUR president! this is HIS fault that this happened! it’s YOUR fault they’re dead!” our people were doing a good job of preventing him from getting too close to the bar where the vigil was being held. he eventually gave up and left but not after lingering in the background waving his flags and yelling every now and then.

i’m grateful for the speakers who did not let this steal any light or attention away from the intention as well as for the barricade of brave protestors who formed a human shield around our people. the police never came but we still manage to continue protecting our own. and i’m relieved it was just one guy and not a mob. i worried that by posting this it would distract from the original meaning of holding the vigil, but i’m still just very angry that this happened. there are so many people in my recent past who shrug off my rants about homophobia as being “overly dramatic” and a thing of the past... they say, “at least things are better than they were before, right?” so many people not in the community believe that this isn’t a real issue anymore... because we have our rights, right? trumps not in power anymore, right? and this was in colorado, not even a drastically conservative state (purple, yes, but not red) ... a measly hour away from one of the most liberal, gay-friendly cities around. it’s so much worse in so many other places around the world.

now more than ever i think it’s imperative to keep speaking up, showing up. these people are disgusting. yes, this incident could have been a lot worse. but the message is the same. the family members that i have who support trump and who think they can separate the personal from the political support this man’s message, and the violence of that message is truly unforgivable. i don’t agree with a lot of things within this new “queer” community but i don’t want anyone dead or hurt. these people want us dead. who the fuck shows up at a vigil with sobbing people to yell that it’s our fault?

Nonkul and Bright's experience in queer media prior to I Feel You Linger In The Air

So... I've fallen down the huge rabbit hole that is I Feel You Linger In The Air (even though I was already down bad earlier this year when I finished the novels) since the airing of the series. I've tried my best to consume everything translated IFYLITA-related content and now I'm here to summarize a few points I love about the (immaculate) casting of Nonkul and Bright.

For Nonkul

Prior to IFYLITA, Nonkul has had a few BL-adjacent projects:

2014 indie gay film "Love's Coming", where he plays a friend of the gay protagonist.

2016 sitcom series "Bang Rak Soi 9/1", where he plays a student with a crush on his straight best friend (main character played by Tongtong, who you may have known from To Sir With Love or Khun Chai)

2019 chinese bromance "Dive", where he plays the 2nd main lead who develops "strong friendship" with the protagonist as swimming teammates

But IFYLITA marks Nonkul's first time playing in a BL series where he is the protagonist.

Back in 2021, Nonkul posted this Q&A video on Facebook, where he answered the question "If you have a chance, would you consider playing in a BL series? If accepted, who do you to co-act with?". To which Nonkul went on a full long discussion on how he doesn't view BL as a genre and talks about what kind of role he would want to play (full clip below).

If that series is an interesting storyline for me, I am always open to any kind of genre. I never categorized BL series as an BL series, I just think of it as a series with another plot as part of my work. It is a normal series that can have any of the plots which I will categorize as Romantic Comedy, Drama or whatever. Thus, when I choose the BL series I want to work with, the love preference of the character does not affect my decision. If the plot of the series is interesting, of course I'm gonna do it for sure. Every work that I chose, I personally think it at least enjoyable for me. Of course, if in the future, there are BL series with plots that I find interesting, that I enjoyed the script. "Like, wow, that's my type!", I will definitely selected it to be my future project. A good written series is a good series. This is what I believe as an actor. - Nonkul

For BL Series, I think I can work with everyone. I don't think I have anyone in particular. One thing! I desire the character of that person/actor? to be close to the character in the series. At that point I will be satisfied. Sometimes, I as an actor have a chance to work with people who didn't have a lot of acting experience. I will still discover something new from him as well. And there is a BL novel which I really like! [Nonkul explains the plot of his favorite BL Novel 'Peremo'] I would prefer to choose the "heroine" role because it will be a new experience for me as an actor because it will be a new experience for me as an actor. Because basically I only play as a hero role for the main character or support character in my work, but a "heroine" role in a BL series is the only chance for me to play a character more feminine. So it is a new experience for me. [Nonkul continues raving about 'Peremo']. But if you think that you can make [an adaptation of Peremo], please do not forget me, Nonkul! Pleaseeeeeeee, I will do my best, I promise!!! However, I'm not only fixated on this novel. I'm also open for many more BL series if there is an interesting plot. - Nonkul

Interestingly the 3 checklists Nonkul mentioned his dream BL novel/character 'Peremo' had was 1. playing the 'heroine' role; 2. it has a LOT of action; 3. it is also sci-fi fantasy genre. And then in 2022, Nonkul booked 2 action dramas and IFYLITA which checked off criteria 1 and 3 of his wishlist (he mentioned it in this interview).

In 2022, at the beginning of IFYLITA announcement event, Nonkul mentioned that one of reasons that he accepted to play Jom in IFYLITA is that the story didn’t just put love scenes in just for fan services. Previously he had rejected some series because of that.

Nonkul read the novel prior to the acceptance of the role and you can tell he put a lot of care into bringing Jom to life (Nonkul immediately tweeting his apology after the pilot trailer is out about him accidentally using right hand to sketch (because Jom is left-handed), discussing various novel details with fans of the book at event, discussing how to punch Ohm like Jom would instead of punching him regularly as he would in other series, even giving book-film comparison commentaries in the BTS of the episodes)

Nonkul's physical and facial features are also so similar to Jom in the novel, especially his Chinese heritage is taken into account by the casting directors (Jom is also Thai of Chinese heritage iirc). Honestly kudos to P'Tee and co for snatching Nonkul.

For Bright

Prior to IFYLITA, Bright has played a supporting male gay character in the CH3 Lakorn 'Rivalry' and starred in PP Krit's MV 'It's Okay Not To Be Alright'.

But IFYLITA still marks Bright's first ever male lead role (ngl I was quite shocked when I found out about this because like the man is SIGNED to CH3, what are they doing?) AND his first official "BL" series.

Bright also accept the role of Khun Yai after he went to buy the novel and read them.

Before filming, Bright practiced a lot to portrayed Khun Yai as close to the novel as possible (the way Khun Yai walks with hands behind his back, his posture, him speaking in the different local dialect...)

Here are some translated interview questions Nonkul and Bright did before filming IFYLITA for bangkokbiznews that I found really interesting and want to share (original Thai article) (translated by twitter user lingerair/eugust)

Question: How is your individual characters? How are they similar or different from you? (1)

Nonkul: Jom and I are very different. Jom has soft and sensitive part. He cried so many times, and often gets upset with things that if it's me, I wouldn't be upset like him but his tears is already flowing. Bright: Khun Yai is quite similar with me. He's calm and wise. It's easy to be Khun Yai when I read the script. I try to put myself as Khun Yai. I'm Khun Yai and Khun Yai is me. I always think like this to be able to moderately act as Khun Yai.

Question: BL series has become a powerful "soft power". What do you about this? (2)

Nonkul: To be honest, whatever entertainment media it is, I view all of them as soft power but can't deny that during this period foreigners are especially interested in Thai Y series. I think it's a good thing. In the end, no matter what kind of content they are interested, it's a pleasant thing. Bright: Bright agrees (to that) very much. There are so many BL series with many fans both in and outside of the country, thus I think that it's good quality soft power in presenting a lot of things. Such as "I Feel You Linger In The Air" has a lot of Thai culture incorporated it in. Nonkul: Since it's period (series), it won't look like we're forcing Thai culture into (the series). We want foreigners to learn about how was it during the era and how it affects the present.

Question: This novel has a lot of fans waiting, do you feel pressured in taking a role in this? (3)

Nonkul: There's a little bit of pressure but personally, when I've worked till this point, I'm kinda used to this. I can say that I already have some expectations (for myself) and receive some pressures as a motivation in working but I'm not that stressed by it. Bright: Similar to Non, I'm a little bit pressured but we will both do our best, everyone will do their best. Fans has expectations because they want to watch the adaptation. We'll do it in our way and we hope everyone'll likes it.

As a huge fan of the novel, I just love how much love Nonkul and Bright have for the original novel and the amount "homework", care and dedication they have to crafting their characters to be as close as possible. you know what. it actually genuinely makes me sad that this started out as a space for us gay swifties to be like “yes let’s find a way to be soft gaylors in a way that’s rational and rooted in reality without all the crazy conspiracy stuff” and that we all just hoped that this blog could find its way to teenagers that were caught in like the ttb/twitter gaylors web of pretty out there theories to find their way to us to be in a healthier gaylor space but that at this point we’re all just like “you know what fuck these unpleasant, rude, mean people that try to find evidence to out someone, use homophobic stereotypes, throw fellow gay swifties under the bus for the sake of a privileged white cis woman who’s living her life with her british mans, are just generally speaking unnecessarily ride, don’t consume gossip/“tea”/blinds in a critical way at all and have a needless superiority complex to boot. they don’t want a rational space to gaylor because they just want to be right about their insane theories so like fuck them”. like it’s genuinely sad that a space that started out very pro-gaylor as like a concept now dislikes it tbh because of all the behaviour we’ve seen exhibited in gaylors. (also another thing that’s sad is that we’ve found out that if you want to gaylor in a rational realistic way there’s barely anything left to gaylor with and taylor is just a girl very obsessed with men and joe alwyn specifically) (which like good for her but a little disappointing for all of us who thought she had more range)

100% my take on this. Like I’d love to 1) have more reasonable Gaylor content to like blog about and talk about 2) be able to vibe with the concept in a fun way. But genuinely people are SO deeply unpleasant, stupid and fucking DELUSIONAL that I just absolutely cannot. I’m not comfortable with the peddling of Q Anon adjacent stuff, I’m not comfortable with like the appeals to authority that make no sense (“insiders”), I’m not comfortable with beliefs in klues and signs and shit tbh, and I’m not comfortable with the core thesis that someone owes someone else a coming out. I don’t find the jokes that funny. I don’t like the language used to discuss it, like it icks me out. There’s just… not that much positive I can say about the concept, the section of the fandom, or the overall vibes.

I’m also not judging anyone for finding whatever they find fun… fun. But it’s like not for me tbh and I can’t make it be for me.

one thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon

realistically, her redemption/healing arc would be messy and complicated and not at all linear and hard to make into a compelling tv storyline

and any “redemption arc” that would be compelling children’s television would not be Good Enough For Me

and unpopular opinion i don’t think it would serve the story to add an addendum of book 4

so no i don’t want the atla writers to concoct an Azula Redemption Arc

but i want the characters in canon to save a little space in their heart for her 

for someone she has not directly hurt to see her circa sozin’s comet and say, “this is not the warmaking machine ozai tried his best to make, this is a deeply hurt child”
