The Lord Is My Shepherd (Psalm 23)
Serenity for our anxious racing thoughts becomes a real hope, for there is a shepherd who protects the human flock and ensures that they have everything they need.
Psalm 23, by Cliff Gleason The Lord is my shepherd;    I have all that I need.He lets me rest in green meadows;    he leads me beside peaceful streams.    He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths,    bringing honor to his name.Even when I walk    through the darkest valley,I will not be afraid,    for you are close beside me.Your rod and your staff    protect and comfort me.You…

Praise, Thanksgiving, And Assurance -- Ken Thomas
Psalm 138 opens with thankful praise to the Lord…not half-hearted praise, but with the whole heart.  There is no timidity in the praise.  It will be sung “before the gods” (some say angels or heavenly beings or kings).  In my mind I can see the reckless boldness of one who would sing the praise of “THE God,” bowing down toward His holy dwelling even in the presence of the false gods of the…

"But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a child quieted at its mother's breast; like a child that is quieted is my soul." (Psalm 131:2)
True rest is the deepest yearning of every one of us. The psalmist says when he is in the presence of God, he has perfect rest. He is relieved of all his anxieties. That is where we too are to find such complete rest – in the loving presence of our God.
Jesus said, "Come to Me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
Stress, sin and guilt tires our mind and soul. When I am assured that all my sin is washed away, my guilt is removed and when I know Jesus cares for me and will do all things well, my stress melts away. True rest is in God. "Our hearts were made for God. And they shall never find rest until they find their rest in Him."

If you kiss Wyll a second time after the first dance, he says “gods you make me almost forget myself” and now I’m picturing Wyll losing control of himself with his desire for you right there in the middle of camp.
Pushing you against the rock wall by the waterfall. The sound of the water masking your sounds as he lavishes you with attention. His mouth searing your skin, hands gripping your clothes trying to wrestle his composure back but being unable to with how much he wants to take you.
He presses his forehead against yours and looks at you, begging you to stop him. His breath ragged and his cheeks dark with want. He bites his bottom lip, your name tumbling out like a prayer, like psalm he sings and then he’s on his knees.
Resolution in his eyes. If he’s unable to contain himself, then so be it. But by the gods he will be assured you are pleasured first.

"Holiness Hoodoo: Rediscovering Ancestral Roots Without Jesus"
The term "Holiness Hoodoo" may leave some people puzzled, so allow me to clarify its meaning. In my view, Holiness Hoodoo represents a return to the traditional practices of my ancestral lineage, a way to decipher who I am and what my purpose entails. Many of our forebears were devout Christians, and this undeniable fact forms the backdrop of my spiritual journey. Despite the complex relationship that many Black Americans have with the Bible due to the scars of slavery, it's essential to remember that it wasn't the Bible itself that caused harm, but the people wielding it as a tool of oppression.
As I delved deeper into the realms of ancestral magic, I began to notice striking parallels with church practices. To some, I seemed too "churchy" for hoodoo, and to others, too "hoodoo" for the church—there appeared to be no middle ground. However, I've come to understand that my connection to my ancestors is the cornerstone of my spiritual practice. I've realized that perhaps the reason some individuals struggle to communicate with their spirits is that they try to venerate them through African traditions, tarot, or other methods their ancestors might not recognize.
Tumblr media
The Bible, as a potent tool in hoodoo, is not revered because we live by its teachings but because it contains powerful scriptures. My mother, for instance, believed in Jesus, yet she was a practitioner of hoodoo—a tongue-speaking, spirit-conjuring woman. Her approach, which I now embrace, is what I refer to as "Holiness Hoodoo."
Tumblr media
So, what does Holiness Hoodoo look like for me?
1. Setting the Atmosphere:
I play inspirational or gospel music that resonates with my specific needs, allowing it to fill my home as I clean, pray, or perform spiritual work. Gospel music serves as a direct conduit to my ancestral spirits, and sometimes, when I hear a song I haven't listened to in a while, an ancestor's presence is assured.
2. Keeping a Bible on the Altar:
While I don't read the Bible frequently, I keep it open to the Psalms as an offering to my spirits. The Bible also serves as a powerful tool of protection, and specific verses and pages can function as talismans and petitions.
3. Baptisms:
Baptism, in my lineage, is a ritual practice to wash ourselves of sins and start anew. It's not just for babies; it can also cleanse generational curses and traumas passed down from parents.
4. Shouting:
Listening to gospel music, I engage in the practice of shouting, a form of ecstatic dance that connects me with my spirits. This practice fills me with light and often results in downloads of ancestral wisdom.
5. Laying of Hands:
I perform the laying of hands, a practice I'll discuss in more detail in the future. It's distinct from Reiki and is a significant part of my spiritual tradition.
6. Fasting:
Fasting is a part of my spiritual practice, serving as a means of both elevating my spiritual consciousness and cleansing my body. I firmly believe that one's health plays a pivotal role in their spiritual journey.
Holiness Hoodoo is about preserving the traditions of our ancestors and finding connections with them. It doesn't rely on dogma or strict religious doctrine; instead, it is a pathway to tap into the wisdom and spirituality that has been passed down through generations. In this practice, there is no room for being "too churchy" or "too hoodoo"—it's about embracing the rich tapestry of our heritage and harnessing it for a profound and authentic spiritual experience.

Daily Scripture Text: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake." - Psalm 23:1-3
Commentary: Psalm 23 is a timeless reminder of God's tender care and provision for His people. In these verses, we see God depicted as a loving shepherd who guides, protects, and sustains us. The imagery of green pastures and still waters conveys a sense of peace and contentment that comes from resting in God's presence. As our shepherd, God not only meets our physical needs but also restores and nourishes our souls, leading us in paths of righteousness for His glory.
Questions:
How does the image of God as a shepherd bring comfort and assurance to your life?
In what ways do you experience God's provision and guidance in your daily life?
How can you cultivate a deeper relationship with God as your shepherd and follow Him more closely?
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for being our shepherd and for caring for us with such tenderness and love. Help us to trust in your provision and guidance, knowing that you lead us in paths of righteousness. Restore our souls and grant us the wisdom to follow you faithfully each day. In Jesus' name, amen.

God Is Bigger (Psalm 46)
God is bigger than the boogie man. He's bigger than Godzilla, or the monsters on TV.
God is our refuge and strength,    a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,    though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam,    though the mountains tremble with its tumult. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,    the holy habitation of the Most High.God is in the midst of the city; it…

Shift Your Faith
It’s quite surprising how similar anxiety is to assurance in their origin, and yet the mental health of those who are anxious and those who are assured is vastly different. Here are some helpful thoughts on how Christians can make that shift.
Listen to the podcast of this post by clicking on the player below, and you can also subscribe on Apple, Spotify, or Audible.  https://craigtowens.files.wordpress.com/2023/10/shift-your-faith.mp3 When Luke says first that “Jesus grew in wisdom,” that is our indication that a healthy mind is at the foundation for every other aspect of health (Luke 2:52). We don’t see Jesus anxious or worried, we…

Thou, O God, hast prepared of thy goodness for the poor.–Psalm 68:10
All God's gifts are prepared gifts laid up in store for needs that are foreseen. God anticipates our needs. Out of the fullness that He has treasured up in Christ Jesus, He provides of His goodness for the poor. You may trust Him for all the necessities that can occur, for He has infallibly foreknown every one of them. He can say of us in all conditions, "I know that you would be in this situation." A man makes a journey across the desert, and when he has gone a day's distance and stops to rest, he discovers that he needs many comforts and necessaries that he has not brought in his luggage. "Ah!" says he, "I did not foresee this: if I had to take this journey again, I would bring things with me that are necessary for my comfort." But God has noticed with His all-seeing eyes all the requirements of His poor, wandering children; and when those needs occur, He has supplies ready. It is goodness that He has prepared for the poor in heart, goodness and goodness only. "My grace is sufficient for thee" (2 Cor. 12:9). "As thy days, so shall thy strength be" (Deut. 33:25). Reader, is your heart heavy this evening? God knew it would be. The comfort that your heart needs is treasured in the sweet assurance of the text. You are poor and needy, but He has thought about you. Do you feel that you never were so consciously vile as you are now? Behold, the crimson fountain is open still, with all its former effectiveness to wash away your sin away. You will never come into such a position that Christ cannot help you. No trouble will ever arrive in your spiritual affairs in which Jesus Christ will not be equal to the emergency, for your history has all been foreknown and provided for in Jesus.

EMBRACING TRANSITION
"The Lord blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys."  - Job 42:12 NIV
From time to time we actually have to come out of one undertaking completely before God can transition us to the next assignment in our Christ calling.  Something that is closing in our lives can make us feel like we are out of control, going to shipwreck, or worse yet, never able to rebound.
Sometimes our calendars, schedules, and plans just don't line up with where God wants to take us anymore, so He decides to change our course.
"Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long."  - Psalm 25:5 NIV
God knows what you are about to walk through and He has already prepared for it. – everything you need to carry out His purpose for your life is already present – there is nothing missing and nothing broken. Don't be afraid to share how you really feel with Him. He wants to hear what you have to say about it. At first, it can feel breathtaking and even fearful, but God is there. He is in the heights, the depths, and the small steps of faith you are about to take.
STEPPING OUT OF THE BOAT
Some of the steps ahead will be like walking on water. Unfortunately, we don't get to pick the visibility of the water or the depth of the ocean that the Lord asks us to step out on.
"Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?"  - Psalm 139:7 NIV
Rest assured that God never closes a door unless He intends on opening something else for you. Remember, “all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
"Kings will be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers. They will bow down before you with their faces to the ground; they will lick the dust at your feet. Then you will know that I am the Lord; those who hope in Me will not be disappointed" (Isaiah 49:23 NIV).

God never abandons His children. In times of danger and distress, He spreads His wings of protection and comfort over us. Under the shadow of His wings, we don’t need to fear the difficult circumstances of life. Storms may rage around us, but we are safe under the canopy of His constant care. The psalmist assures us, “He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge.” (Psalm 91:4)
If you are going through painful times, take refuge under His wings. Take comfort in the fact that God's protection is spread over you. Nothing can touch your life without His permission. Nothing can threaten when He is your Protector.

All afflictions are temporary, God will deliver you
"The afflictions of the righteous are many, but the LORD delivers him from them all." Psalm 34:19
Today, God's word is strengthening you as you go through life's challenges and sufferings. Don't think that maybe God doesn't love you because you're experiencing the troubles of this world.
When the word says "the afflictions of the righteous," it means that even God's blameless people suffer. When you face afflictions and troubles, it doesn't mean you've sinned or you're unworthy. No! Even the righteous suffer many afflictions.
So, Child of God, know that troubles and sufferings are part of the righteous life. We have much to learn from Job, who endured immense suffering. And God testified of him to Satan, saying, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil." Job 1:8
Jesus Christ also told us, "In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." John 16:33 So, suffering and tribulation are things we will encounter in our lives, and it doesn't mean that the one suffering lacks something or is weaker than the one who isn't suffering.
The good news today is the promise God has given us in this word: "But the LORD delivers him from them all." Psalm 34:19 God has assured us of His healing and salvation. He has promised to heal all afflictions, not some, but all.
Some people have lost hope because there's something they've been praying for, for a long time, but it hasn't been answered yet. Everything else has been answered by God, except that particular problem. So, they've come to accept that problem as a part of their lives. They feel like God won't answer it. The word says, "God will heal all." There's no illness or disease that is yours. No affliction is yours permanently. All the sufferings you're going through are temporary, and
God will heal all your afflictions and you will live a life of joy and peace, praising your God for his goodness and grace in your life.
PRAYER: Thank you, LORD, for your promise to heal me and deliver me from all afflictions. Today, I surrender myself to you in faith, believing that you can save me from all my troubles, Amen.
