My Predictions for the Upcoming Life Series !!
Note that I wrote this on discord for my friends who don't watch this, so some things might be repetitive or explained more in depth. This is a very long post so soz. This is just everything I think will happen + a bingo card at the end.
TEAM PREDICTIONS
ImpulseSV
GTWScar
Geminitay (see 1)
BigBStatz
Solidarity
BdoubleO
TangoTek (see 2)
SkizzleMan (see 2)
EthosLab (see 2)
ZombieCleo
Grian
InTheLittleWood
RenDog
Smajor
Smallishbeans (see 3)
1. Gem isn't confirmed to be in the Life Series but darn well I believe it.
2. Tango, Skizz and Etho have all teamed together before but they usually stick together, which is why I put them together. I think Cleo would be a refreshing new part of their group though, especially since they had such intresting dynamics in the last season.
3. Joel is usually a loner in these things, and I don't necessarily think he will be this time (At least, not until he becomes red. Thats when he usually loses all his allies.) but I don't know where to put him. I try not to add more than 4-5 people in each alliance so... sorry Joel I swear I love you 💕
4. Sorry Lizzie & Mumbo truthers but I don't think they're coming back for this season.
FINAL DEATH RANKINGS
1. ImpulseSV
2. Pearlescentmoon
3. ZombieCleo
4. Smajor
5. InTheLittleWood
6. GeminiTay
7. Grian
8. BdoubleO
9. EthosLab
10. GTWScar
11. BigBStatz
12. RenDog
13. TangoTek
14. SkizzleMan
15. Solidarity
(Rough Ranking, will change with alliances and first episode. 1st is who wins, 15th is first death. And no, Jimmy does not escape the Canary curse today.)
Pearl, Scott, Martyn and Impulse all have high rankings in the finales, so I do really think they'll be top 6. I just hope Scott doesn't make it into the final 3. I want to see that twink get obliterated /nsx
Also, I know that Cleo doesn't really get that late into the game!! I just made a bet that she would get final 3 so I'm manifesting it. xoxo I'm rooting for you Cleo
Here's my bingo! Pretty self explanatory. I made this weeks before I made any of these predictions, or even before the 5th season was announced, so some opinions or predictions here might've changed.

The Thornes Ranked By Suspicion Level
Before the book goes any further and any more information is revealed, I wanted to go ahead and rank every Thorne + Duchess Eveline by how suspicious I am of them being the murderer. For fun, obviously, but I also want to see how this ages. I know I’m probably way off, but we’ll see!
Suspicion Level: None
12. Trystan. Trystan is the least suspicious because let’s be real. PB would never pull something as gutsy as making the only love interest the murderer. I don’t mind, though. It definitely wouldn’t fit with Trystan’s character.
11. King Maksim. I dunno. I feel like Maksim is kinda lost in the sauce in all of this. I’ll bet you he ends up murdered, though.
Suspicion Level: Low
10. Lydea. Lydea is a hardass, ambitious as hell, and takes no shit. That being said, I don’t really think she’d care too much about whatever agenda the murderer seems to have regarding the Heir Act. She seems like she’d be content just being the Captain of the Royal Guard. That said, it is a little suspicious how she allegedly knows everything that goes on in Drakovia but knew nothing about the murder that took place in the palace.
9. Emika. Emika is an internet bully and doesn’t seem to care for much else. It could all be an act, but they seem to overestimate how powerful and intimidating they actually are.
8. Kaspar. Similar reasons to Emika, except Kaspar is slightly more unhinged given that he stole the murder weapon simply because he admired it. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if he had some involvement in the murder, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if he’s just a red herring.
Suspicion Level: Medium
7. Sebastyan. Sebastyan has had it out for Trystan (and by extension, the MC) since they arrived in Drakovia. He had close ties with Juliana since he helped her with the Heir Act and was understandably upset by her death. I strongly suspect he (or suspects #6 and #4) was the Thorne sibling romantically involved with Juliana prior to Trystan’s engagement to her. I’m not super suspicious of him overall because he’d be too predictable as the murderer, but I’m definitely keeping my eye on him.
6. Vasili. I also feel like he could have been the one romantically involved with Juliana. Additionally, he’s been the third least present (only behind Duchess Eveline and Patryk) of the Thornes, and he seems like one of the most sane among them. He’d also be the second in line for the throne if the Heir Act was passed, which adds a little more suspicion. Other than that, there’s not much other reason for me to suspect him.
5. Marguerite. Olivia explicitly told us to beware anyone who was kind to us. None of the Thornes beside Trystan are actively nice to us besides Marguerite, who, like Vasili, is just a little too sane to be looked over. Also, maybe her fashion designs suck because she spends more time plotting and murdering than putting effort into her clothes. I am only half-joking.
Suspicion Level: High
4. Astrid. Astrid is known for leaving behind a trail of deceased lovers as well as her involvement with the local mafia. She is the third and final Thorne I suspect was romantically involved with Juliana. It definitely fits with her tendency to have dead lovers.
3. Patryk. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: he’s either the murderer’s right hand man or he’s completely innocent. My bet is right hand man. He’s unhinged enough that it’s feasible. Kaspar and Emika are all talk, but Patryk actually did try to poison the MC.
Suspicion Level: WEEWOOWEEWOOWEEWOO 🚨
2. Duchess Eveline. Eveline has three children with the king and gives me the impression that she feels that she doesn’t fit in with any of the Thornes. I mean, she tells the MC during their very first meeting that they made a good choice steering clear from the rest of them. Also, we sit next to her during the dinner, she reveals some insights about how the heirs treat her children, and let’s not forget the chapter description rhetorically asks if we’ll find ourselves sitting next to the murderer. I feel like she killed either Nadja or Juliana, one of the two, while suspect #1 killed the other one for a different reason unbeknownst to the other, whatever that may be.
1. Queen Viktoria. She’s angry and she’s powerful; a very dangerous combination. She shut down Juliana’s investigation in two weeks, which is definitely an eyebrow-raiser, especially since she as the queen would be irrelevant if the Heir Act allowing the king’s illegitimate children to take the throne was passed. Like I said with Eveline, I feel like she either killed Juliana or Nadja while Eveline killed the other. The two have very different personalities and motives, obviously, but share a glimmer of desperation. And desperation, as it happens, is one of the most powerful motivators in the world.

Ranking for the seasons of Winx?
I can't believe I haven't done this already. Okay, but I'm keeping it short:
8. Season 6 - too much wasted potential
7. Season 7 - doesn't waste potential only because there's hardly any in the entire season, most childish, annoying and has time travel
6. Season 8 - first three episodes are good, last three episodes are godawful and between all that it's just mediocre
5. Season 5 - tries to have some structure but only becomes predictable and boring, fails to do justice to the characters and emotional moments (some of the time, not always)
4. Season 4 - Lots of potential, bad execution, but still manages to have intriguing concepts and pull off some things
3. Season 3 - too much structural incoherence as it progresses and Valtor loses his effectiveness as a villain, the finale is underwhelming, still has extremely emotional moments, interesting arcs and creative worldbuilding (Black Willow, my beloved!)
2. Season 1 - has the best structure of all the seasons but doesn't focus much on the other girls besides Bloom, does a good job of establishing the world but without exploring too much of it, has the Trix in all their glory, epic finale
1. Season 2 - best character work of all the seasons, interesting episodic conflicts while managing to carry the overall storyline well enough, the Trix still work as villains (more or less), the Hallowinx episode, convergence, more worldbuilding and exploration of other realms and last but not least - has Layla (unlike s1)!

My thoughts on Eurovision 2023 entries (part 3)
Here is the third part of the original post.
Enjoy.
Finland: KÄÄRIJÄ - Cha Cha Cha
Tumblr media
Rank: #5
Rating: 9,5 / 10
Finland has chosen audacity ! Here is a chaotic entry, messy in the good sense of the term, original, unique and in Finnish please ! Clearly Lordi's Country wants to win the contest this year. The European public will love “Cha Cha Cha”, but what about the juries in the final? Let's be honest, Käärijä will go to the final but can he win Eurovision ? If the juries like it then it can happen.
San Marino: PIQUED JACKS - Like An Animal
Tumblr media
Rank: #35
Rating: 4,5 / 10
The music isn't bad but "Like An Animal" sounds dated. The lyrics could have been written better, it lacks impact and it's powerless. San Marino will be one of the pee breaks in the second semi-final.
Poland: BLANKA - Solo
Tumblr media
Rank: #36
Rating: 3,5 / 10
Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Blanka's vocal delivery in the Polish national final leaves something to be desired, it looks like she's just content to look pretty. The song itself is listenable but only in studio version. It's a basic and well-produced entry but which is sorely lacking of originality and which is not competitive at all. I could have rated Poland better if Blanka had done a better vocal performance.
Netherlands: MIA NICOLAI & DION COOPER - Burning Daylight
Tumblr media
Rank: #10
Rating: 9 / 10
I can feel Duncan Laurence's touch on this song. It's a very beautiful entry with impact, the lyrics are inspiring and there is a lot of soul in this title. But, the Netherlands are in the strongest semi-final, and it's 100% televoting so it's not guaranteed that the country will make the final unless the staging is brilliant. I still hope the Netherlands will qualify because the entry is too qualitative to stay in the semi-final.
Cyprus: ANDREW LAMBROU - Break A Broken Heart
Tumblr media
Rank: #31
Rating: 6 / 10
I didn't expect anything from Cyprus and I'm still disappointed. This song is too predictable, I don't understand why people like this entry so much, it sounds like a song that finished 7th in a national final. It's too garish, dramatic and Swedish, what saves it's its quality and the production but I had a hard time seeing the island in the final.
Germany: LORD OF THE LOST - Blood & Glitter
Tumblr media
Rank: #14
Rating: 8,5 / 10
Finally ! Germany sends metal to Eurovision ! Ok, it's not Rammstein but it's still a german band with an international fanbase. "Blood & Glitter" is a very good entry, powerful as it should be, impactful, glamorous despite itself and memorable. It has a lot of personality. Germany can avoid the bottom 5 this year and I stand by my words.
Moldova: PASHA PARFENI - Soarele şi Luna
Tumblr media
Rank: #7
Rating: 9,5 / 10
This is the perfect choice for Moldova. "Soarele şi Luna" is a great song, Pasha Parfeni returns to Eurovision not only to do better than in 2012 but also to honor Moldovan culture as it should. It's very catchy, repetitive certainly but memorable. Moldova will go to the final and who knows, maybe the juries will be more generous with the country this year.
Iceland: DILJÁ - Power
Tumblr media
Rank: #21
Rating: 8 / 10
Iceland made a good choice even if there were better choices in the Icelandic national final but they were eliminated in the semi-finals. "Power" is a powerful, catchy and memorable song with a lot of impact. I could have put a 9 if the song had remained in Icelandic. Diljá is a ball of energy on stage, I think she will have a great time in Liverpool.
Serbia: LUKE BLACK - Samo Mi Se Spava
Tumblr media
Rank: #6
Rating: 9,5 / 10
Wow! Serbia is truly in its avant-garde era at Eurovision. After "In Corpo Sano", here is its sequel named "Samo mi se spava". Musically, it's dark, mysterious and chaotic and that's what I'm here for. Luke Black exudes a lot of creativity and charisma, I really like his presence on stage. The public will love this.
To be continued in the next post

Eurovision 2023 nitpicking: FINAL PREDICTION... 🫣🇪🇺
Okay, now that I´ve heard all the songs, it´s time to predict how this thing will go...
Usually I would do a "proper" ranking based on how I think it will go (as opposed to how I HOPE it goes), but I absolutely refuse to write down what I fear (yes fear) will happen (I won't even say it out loud because it would be our biggest nightmare and I will never betray my countryfolk... 😖) so I'm only going to do a ranking of how I HOPE HOPE HOPE it will go and yes I will break the cardinal Eurovision rule but I don't care! 🏼‍♀️
1 point: Australia 🇦🇺
2 points: Norway 🇳🇴
3 points: Germany 🇩🇪
4 points: Italy 🇮🇹
5 points: Czech 🇨🇿
6 points: Moldova 🇲🇩
7 points: Austria 🇦🇹
8 points: Portugal 🇵🇹
10 points: France 🇫🇷
12 points: CHA CHA CHA CHA CHA CHA CHAAAAAA!!! 🇫🇮💚🇫🇮💚🇫🇮
I really struggled to fill the slots this year because the quality was sooooo bad... 😂

Mandalorian Season 3: Episode Ranking
WHOO! It's that time again! Vote For Mighty Clocks comes back from the dead in order to write a very different post from anything he's ever posted before! Let's get into the episode ranking, and be warned, there will be spoilers for Season 3!
Episode 3: The Convert. I know this is a controversial first pick, but The Convert added so much depth to the galaxy, gave us a peek into Doctor Pershing's mind, an idea of how the Imperial Remnant managed to continue operating, and just so much juicy lore, as well as a predictable yet epic cliffhanger
Episode 7: The Spies. This one makes the high end of the list for much the same reason as The Convert. A lot of lore and depth was added here. The sacrifice of Paz Vizla was emotional, and the cliffhanger made us fear that no one, not even Din Djarin himself, was safe. It was everything we needed to save The Mandalorian. I only wish the finale lived up to the cliffhanger of The Spies...
Episode 2: The Mines of Mandalore. This is where I start to lose interest in Season 3 to be honest. The Mines of Mandalore was another great episode in my opinion, with all the lore and references presented, however in order for this to truly work, it needed strong context. That's where Episode 4 needed to pick up, and unfortunately it failed. Otherwise, this would have been much more impressive
Episode 1: The Apostate. At the time, I criticized it by saying it sacrificed itself for Season 3. It felt more like buildup than an actual, real episode. Looking back, I stand corrected. It was the most sane episode out of all we got, it left an open ended future for the show, and it's not like I wasn't excited to watch it. It held the individualistic nature of Din Djarin while keeping the political intrigue that comes with Mandalorians. The rest of the series needed to learn those same lessons. Even then, however, I'd be lying if I said The Apostate was what I wanted out of The Mandalorian
Episode 8: The Return. Look. This episode was garbage. But it was visually stunning garbage with amazing fights. Moff Gideon felt wasted, destroying the Darksaber was a mistake, they kinda cheated the sacrifice Din Djarin, Bo-Katan, and Grogu made, and as cute as it was, the whole adoption thing was basically Lucasfilm trying to bribe us into liking Season 3. BUT, aside from all that, the visuals were gorgeous, the setup for Season 4 was brilliant, and the show did a great job of reminding us how weak Grogu actually is. We needed to be reminded of that, especially since he's been shown as capable ever since Season 2
Episode 5: The Pirate. This story was kinda bland, and had a setup that ended up being completely ignored, however it's saving grace was the Mandalorian siege on Nevarro against the pirates. It was awesome!
Episode 4: The Foundling. This episode was just bland and lacked memorability. It's only silver lining is Bo-Katan doubting her beliefs. I hate Bo-Katan as a character, and yet I loved her in this episode
Episode 6: Guns For Hire. This episode was...cringe at best, and incredibly frustrating at worst. Grogu was adorable and I loved seeing Jack Black in Star Wars, however absolutely nothing about this episode screamed "Star Wars" beyond that. It relied too much on celebrity cameos and fanservice to truly be what any nerd wanted. This was an episode designed solely to keep casual fans interested in the show, and as a nerd, I found the episode as a whole to be insulting
This is where I abruptly end the post with no real elaboration

snw2 #10
My personal episode ranking based on my enjoyment: 3 - 9 - 6 - 4 - 10 - 2 - 8 - 1 - 7 - 5 (might change after I do a rewatch)
I loved the whole season so much <3
Sam Kirk is really lucky that he can't die lol
AFTER 20 EPISODES THEY FINALLY GAVE ME A MEANINGFUL SPOCK AND UNA INTERACTION. WOW. will wonders never cease? Send me gifs! :D
Why was I right thinking that there would be another legacy character surprise in the finale? [I'm kinda not a fan of how much he's trying to copy the original tho...]
also La’an just remembering the roster of Cayuga… reading Jim Kirk’s personnel file (but apparently not Sam’s?)
glad to know that my prediction that Spock and Chapel won't end on a bad note this season came true (I mean, yes, at the beginning of the season I thought they would end it (because I didn't expect them to end Spock and T'Pring), but as the season progressed, and especially after the musical, I was like nah, they're still not finished with Spock/Chapel, and it's nice that their relationship ended on a hope - considering the looong hiatus. I mean maybe they both apologize, Chapel leaves, and that's it, but until then...)
(before the musical, before the whole business with Kirk/La'an, I was like, yeah, the season might end up with Spock/Chapel separated, but when they broke La'an's heart, I was like there's no way they're gonna end all three romantic relationships as separated by the end of the season)
Marie isn't dead either, so there is also hope for them to figure out how to save her. idk like they can freeze her, can't they? (that's typically what happens when a character is put into a stasis at the end of the season - well, they might subvert the expectations, but I think letting her live is already subverting the expectations) [if she can't be saved, I don't think Pike would start another romantic relationship... not with anyone in Starfleet, at least]
The finale doing what I more or less expected with the relationships, makes me feel good about what I still expect for Kirk/La'an (don't wanna people start saying La'an's gonna die in the first ep of s3 now tho - like what writing would that be if she lost a love, got her heart broken, and then was immediately killed by the Gorn who took her entire family and were half of the cause why she can't be vulnerable and is distant from everyone?)
guess only babies are really really aggressive and adult Gorns are more like the one in the Arena
kinda fun that I expected the Enterprise crew to be split up, but a bit differently - i.e. Pike's group stuck on the planet
now La'an is back among the Gorn (that was also a cliffhanger I expected) :( With Sam and others. Maybe in the first episode of s3, Kirk will come and save the day LMAO (I don't want that but it's just fun to think about - fun things to think about VS what I want to see in the show are two separate things) (yes, don't @ me that Kirk didn't know what a Gorn was)
"Sam, trying to play a hero?" "Shut up, Jim."
(and then the Farragut will take in Scotty. Even though some novels did always have Uhura and Scott serve under Pike - maybe SNW will give us background for Scott/Uhura 👀 (even though I personally like Chekov/Uhura)) But no, I don't expect Scotty to stay.
s3 bring on McCoy!

Oscar Thoughts
With mere hours to go before the big show, I managed to squeeze in the last of the ten Best Picture nominees. My personal rankings:
1. American Fiction
2. Poor Things
3. Barbie
4. Past Lives
5. The Holdovers
6. Oppenheimer
7. The Zone of Interest
8. Anatomy of a Fall
9. Killers of the Flower Moon
10. Maestro
My thoughts notwithstanding, I think Oppenheimer is the clear favorite to run away with most of the statues tonight. I’m predicting it will take home Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Director although I don’t think it deserves any of them. No shade to Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy, or Robert Downey Jr, all of whom I love, I just think Oppenheimer was a by the book drama that didn’t excite me at all.
For my money, American Fiction deserves the top prize, as does Jeffrey Wright for Best Actor. I thought that movie was an absolute masterpiece.
Best Actress should go to Emma Stone, but I’m predicting Lily Gladstone takes it. Stone’s performance was miles ahead of the rest in this category. I’d love to see Yorgos Lanthimos take home the directing prize for this as well but I really think it’s Nolan’s night.
In the supporting categories, Ryan Gosling absolutely nailed it as Ken in “Barbie” so he’s my preferred choice, but Downey has all the momentum and is taking this one home. Da’Vine Joy Randolph is going to take it down on the female side, and this is honestly the only one of the big six awards that I actually ageee with.
No matter what, looking forward to the show as always and hoping for some big upsets. My ballot is complete and I’ll update later tonight with my final score.

Pics:
1 & 2. The original poem that we're discussing, in the Brown U archives.
3 thru 5. Lovecraftian towns, enough said!
6. The real horror here is the racist hatred that drove most of HPL's tales.
1913: Output.
Intro: What lingers, from reading Lovecraft's tales, is a feeling of rapt captivity & blind fear.
But, what 'hurts' is the fact that it was Howard's own racism that empowers most his works.
While it's true that readers can't really separate an author's life experiences influencing their works, 1 can enjoy their fiction without liking the writer him or herself.
Though HPL was a bit rabid in his hateful thoughts, I still enjoy his take on cosmic horrors.
I'd gladly be chased thru time & space, 'projecting' myself back to Arkham in the early 1900s.
Or, slip thru the dimensions out to the Great Australian Desert. And then, plunge down into the depths of the Pacific Ocean!!
I'll even play the part of a lonely & scared academic who learns too much to survive any longer.
But, I won't act like some blind bigot. I'm not a racist & have friends of all kinds & sexes.
Hey! Watch where you put that sinful tentacle...
Plot: We start out with "New-England losing (its) original inhabitants¹ & agricultural atmosphere²."
"Being now the seat of... industries (run) by southern Europeans & West Asiatic immigrants of low grade³..."
"(Their) squalid, nosy village (now) asleep. Dusk & quiet hide a monstrous mill⁴... (now belonging to) alien serfs."
"Tainted air for (a) moment clears the ruin wrought by evil years⁵ & (my) tortured mind is lightened of its pain."
Suddenly "ancestral spirits reign anew & old New-England... lives again."
But, this only lasts for a moment.
The poem now focuses on describing "an empty green⁶, ancient structures rotting (away & a) temple spire (that) ascends no higher (due to) the Popish cross⁷."
Then, the poem asks "where dwells that race... whose rule is benign⁸?"
Suddenly, we get a twist!!
"From the woes which blend in modern times, new blessings emerge⁹!"
Yet, the poem ends with a final sad prediction, "contemplation mourns New England's end¹⁰ (for) draped in sack-cloth¹¹, 'She' (=s New England) chants her country's dirge¹²."
Notes:
1. At 1st, it sounds as if Howard's writing about the aboriginal American 'Indians' but, we know better!
If he were, he would be sadly correct. There's few of the aboriginal nations left - but, they're not extinct.
Not even in New England...
2. Wrong again.
Today, New England farms provide 50% of the dairy & 40% of the veggies consumed in the region.
Even though farms only make up 7% of the modern land use!!
Cheer on our modern practices.
3. Howard again ranks minorities as being of low quality as a whole.
Due, no doubt, to the then current pseudo-scientific 'thinking.'
But, Lovecraft liked to obsess on most things & didn't like 'change' at all.
The only type of changes that he allowed himself, were on scientific advances.
As even we are finding out, science is always changing. Usually by advances that are 'unexpected'.
Look at the amazing findings of the James Webb telescope, to see what I mean.
But, HPL couldn't seem to master his racial fears - whose origins still remain largely unknown...
4. This seems to refer to Howard's preference to water powered grind- stones & his 'hate' of coal powered mills.
I'd have to agree with him on this point.
5. Hmm... Methinks we can see the slow growth of Lovecraft's Mythos vocabulary in moments like this.
6. Dude, come on. Your poem takes place at night...
If someone (of any color) was there, it wouldn't be for romantic reasons.
7. Howard (the atheist) taking a pot- shot at Christianity while upholding a Protestant past.
8. In some fantasy realm? No 'rule' - especially a royal one - is ever 100% perfect.
Not even democratic 'rule'...
Every known form of government has had some kind of problem(s) during its existence.
9. Hmm... "The woes which blend?"
("Whatchu talking about, Willis?!")
I don't think this is sarcasm aimed at "race mixing."
Perhaps, it's a poetic way to say that America has a lot of problems.
Well, I'd match our problems with yours anytime, bro.
Though HPL would probably like the Big Orange Rump! Lovecraft was always attracted to 'royalty.'
10. Quite wrong again.
As stated before, New England is still in white hands & in no danger of being overrun by minorities - we just don't have the money to live there...
11. Sack-cloth were 'clothes' woven out of goat or camel hair! It was the proper garment to be worn during times of mourning.
In English, it also describes "coarsely woven fabrics made from flax, hemp or cotton."
12. Still wrong!!
We've certainly come close to extinction - several times! But, the U.S. is still here...
Right now, we're still fighting off the greedy power lust of an ex-prez who wants to become 'king.'
The kind of person that Lovecraft would like - at 1st sight!
But, HPL could change his mind!
As he did with Hitler, once Howard understood what kind of a danger Adolph posed - to HPL's beloved England!
Criticism: Not really much written on "Village." So, I'll add some quick notes after the 1 comment that I could find...
The National Amateur said, "Lovecraft chants a dirge (death song) over the New England of American history... discovering that the New England of their dreams is not the New England of today."
Notes:
1. You could think of this poem as part three of Howard's "Racist Trio" for 1913!
The more racist poems being the already examined "Providence in 2000 AD" & "New-England Fallen."
2. But, if this is true, this poem is a toned down version of the other two poems' hateful bigotry! Because, for HPL, this poem is a minor exercise in Racism Lite...
Still, all such works hurt somebody.

I watched 25 movies in 2023 – down from 30 last year. Here they are, ranked in order.
Cherry
Fantastic story, well told. It covered a lot of ground in a short time and made me believe everything. Despite the bad decision, I never stopped pulling for him. Tom Holland crushed it.
2. Tetris
I love these stories that pull the curtain back on pop culture phenomena. An enthralling sprint from start to finish.
3. I, Tonya
Nice job of showing the other side of the story. I felt some empathy for “the monster.” Also, I wasn’t expecting to laugh, but I laughed multiple times.
4. Dune (2021)
It’s always impressive when someone creates a new world that seems to add up. The story is set, now show me the sequel.
5. White Noise
Intellectual and quirky, but ridiculous, in a good way. But it also feels a little too unhinged. Adam Driver crushes it.
6. The Beanie Bubble
Zach Galifinakis’s best performance? Enough of a true story to give me the satisfaction of learning something while also pointing to the ridiculous nature of American capitalism in the 1990s.
7. On the Rocks
Bill Murray and his character carry it.
8. Barbie
Stylistically, really fun. Concept, fantastic. Kate McKinnon and Michael Cera’s characters are the best part of the movie. It was also nice to see so many actors from Sex Education. Of course, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were fantastic as well. Overall, the was good, but it certainly didn’t measure up to the hype (and how could it). My only real complaint comes with when they have all been enlightened and they name all of the problems with society, which is a little too on the nose for me. We got it without being told.
9. Narvik
I’ve been into Dutch things lately, and I always like a new perspective on World War II, but I wouldn’t say this one is a can’t-miss.
10. Seven Kings Must Die
SPOILER ALERT: I feel like I couldn't get into the movie because legitimately the only person I was pulling for at the end was Uhtred. King Athelstan was a dumbass who deserved to die. All the kings who got duped into allying with the evil Dane guy made the move I would have made. Moral of the story: War is terrible. But that final shot of the Great Hall was awesome.
11. Parasite
Kind of funny. A little too far-fetched.
12. This is Where I Leave You
Weak story, great actors.
13. Air
I know why they did it, but it was a mistake to make a movie about Air Jordans without Michael Jordan.
14. Blood & Gold
I couldn’t buy that what happened in that small town didn’t alert larger authorities. In that way, it was a lot like Three Kings, but less humorous.
15. Those People
I am writing this review months after I watched the movie and even after watching the trailer, I have no recollection of ever seeing this movie, but in my notes I gave it three stars, so I’m putting it at the end of my three-star movies for the year.
16. Everything Everywhere All at Once
Loved the first half-ish, and the acting was great, but – as is with most action mind-benders – when anything can happen because the filmmakers aren’t bound by the rules of reality, it felt completely out of control by the end.
17. The Covenant
Movies that pretend like you can move about freely in war are out of touch with reality. But I do love a battle-buddy flick.
18. Raymond & Ray
A little absurd, but Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor are always likable.
19. To Leslie
Predictable addiction story. Bad Southern accents.
20. Midsommar
A horror film, but replace the dark aesthetic with light. Immature characters who ignore all the red flags.
21. The Wonder
SPOILER ALERT: Eerie and intriguing, but my investment diminished once the jig was up. I don’t buy that a devout little girl like that would just walk away.
22. Greyhound
SPOILER ALERT: Decent action sequences at sea, but not enough background for any of it to really mean anything. Elizabeth Shue needed to come back, for sure. Otherwise, why have her play the role?
23. Dead for a Dollar
I’m a Christoph Waltz fan, but this one was full of melodrama.
24. The Incident (1967)
None of the characters do what they should and there was no payoff. I did enjoy seeing those actors in the early stages of their career, though.
25. The Menu
I want to know how Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, and John Leguizamo got trapped in this stupid-ass movie.
See previous years’ lists here: 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017.

The Benidorm Fest Songs!
I'm gonna open my post about the Benidorm Fest songs with a very Very VERY bold prediction. Spain will win Eurovision at some point this decade. Their National Final, Benidorm Fest, has proved to be a lucky charm sending songs that the fans like since 2022. So if they decide to keep it up, Benidorm Fest could bring Spain their first win since 1969 really soon! Will it be the 16 songs I ranked based off of first impression today? I guess we will find out in May!
That being said, Spain announced the songs competing in Benidorm Fest at the end of January and beginning of February. And I will admit, this was a hard ranking to do. Literally any of the songs could win and I'd be happy, and (sadly) I'm not feeling so well today. But let me tell you, this felt so good to rank. Mind you, these are my first impressions of the songs, and this can all change later!
16. Miss Caffeina – Bla Bla Bla 15. Dellacruz – Beso En La Mañana 14. MARLENA – Amor De Verano 13. Jorge González – Caliente 12. Mantra – Me Vas A Ver 11. Quique Niza – Prisionero 10. Almacor - Brillos Platino 9. María Peláe – Remitente 8. Yoly Saa – No Se Me Olvida 7. St. Pedro – Dos Extraños 6. Noan – Te Echo De 5. Nebulossa – Zorra 4. Roger Padrós – El Temps 3. Lerica – Astronauta 2. Angy Fernández- Se Quien Soy 1. Sofia Coll – Here To Stay

2022 in Anime
i give ratings out of 10 stars based on a rubric that considers the following:
2 points / ambition of what the anime is trying to achieve 3 points / effectiveness of the anime in achieving its aims 4 points / my personal, subjective enjoyment 1 point / pacing +1/-1 miscellaneous
so with that said... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (2 anime)
Ping Pong The Animation - believe the hype. incredible.
Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2 - honestly if this show sticks the landing, it may become my favorite anime of all time. it's just the best week to week viewing experience. my jaw lives on the floor. and i spend at least half an hour after every episode debating ethics with my friends. amazing.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (6 anime)
samurai champloo - music! animation! episodic storytelling! STYLE! this anime just has style
ranking of kings - most loveable anime characters of all time. classic fantasy setting. stripped down for honest and charming character storytelling. hilling is best girl of the season FIGHT ME
Golden Kamuy - slow start and then POW. perfect shonen story in an atypical setting. juggles a large cast of characters with competing motivations expertly so you can never predict the twists and turns. criminally underrated
Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song - managed to make me - a known hater of ai/robot stories - glue my eyes to the screen for 3 days. tons of heart and fun storytelling.
Odd Taxi - this is a novel come to life. some of the best dialogue in anime history.
Kotaro Lives Alone - cutest anime child of all time must be protected
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (6 anime)
princess jellyfish - kind of the pinnacle of a generation of shoujo for me
yona of the dawn - tbh i can't remember if i watched this last year or in 2022 but anyway it's great. gripping stuff. the lack of season 2 is criminal and i'm gonna have to collect the manga smh
kaguya-sama love is war season 3 - continued great direction, gimmicks, and jokes
ya boy, kongming! - the shock of the season. somehow this is actually funny and the rap parts are genuinely powerful. i didn't know anime could do music this well tbh
the devil is a part-timer season 1 - had fun watching but nothing sticks with me
parasyte - truly ambitious, gripping sci-fi that doesn't spoonfeed you answers but examines a dilemma from every angle
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 anime)
banana fish - high stakes international thriller with a diverse cast and a gary stu at the helm
darling in the franxx - the not quite as good cousin of evangelion, interested in pubescent sexuality in big robots. major points for bonkers ambition. i was stunned with what it was trying to do.
spy x family - that little girl really is cute
space patrol luluco - studio trigger on speed with 7 min episodes
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (8 anime)
the tatami galaxy - smart, stylish, creative use of the medium.
made in abyss season 1 - a classic hero's journey to confront the unknown and come back forever changed
btooom! - prisoners' dilemma with explosions
demon slayer season 2 - i liked that guy with a bunch of wives and the bad guys
black lagoon - peak 90s anime
moriarty the patriot season 1 - no one told me moriarty is a righteous socialist antihero. it's fun.
theatre of darkness: yamishibai - horror vignettes in 5 minutes for halloween
ascendance of a bookworm season 1 - slow, dull isekai about learning to make a book (not write a book. make a book) until it suddenly gets political in the last couple episodes. can't decide if it's worth continuing tbh
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 anime)
seraph of the end - 'has-to-learn-the-same-lesson-500-times-protagonist'
my dress up darling - i watched the first two episodes in a dark room with strangers and it felt like a soft core porn showing but for kids ??
mushoku tensei: jobless reincarnation season 1 - damn this for having good animation and actually decent pacing because this was gross and i wanted to give it a garbage rating
horimiya - cute romance but i forgot everything about it
⭐⭐⭐⭐ (1 anime)
no game no life season 1 - confused that this was such a phenomenon when it came out. it's fine i guess.
⭐⭐⭐ (5 anime)
that time i got reincarnated as a slime season 1 - when given a name for the 1st time, male goblins evolve into 'hobgoblins' and female goblins evolve into...wait for it...'goblinas.' i died laughing + that's this show's legacy to me
danganropa - edgy and strange and not altogether convincing but it has its moments
my teen romantic comedy snafu - 🤷
call of the night -pretty colors! boring anime¡
death parade - philosophy for dummies the anime
⭐⭐ (1 anime)
k-on season 1 - i know it's a classic & i'm so sorry i was just so bored. cute girls doing cute things is not for me! maybe if it was a movie, but a whole 24 episode show!?!?
⭐ (1 anime)
overlord - overpowered isekai fantasies for men are something. i'll leave it at that.
& then ongoing shows that i'm not going to rank until i finish them (but actually all are pretty good so far) - chainsaw man, blue lock, mob psycho season 3, to your eternity, ao ashi, made in abyss season 2, dororo

album review: Air Guitar -- Sobs
(originally posted October 29, 2022)
i just started listening to them last year, this album grew on me a lot faster!
ALBUM RATING: 8/10
initial thoughts
I generally liked the title track when it was released as a single, so I decided to listen to the album! Their previous albums required quite a bit of relistening to fully appreciate, and even then, I only really liked 1-2 tracks per album/EP. I was pleasantly surprised that this album needed only 1 relisten, and I had a very similar experience with Mercurial World
EDIT: guess I predicted the pitchfork score LMAOO
tracklist
Air Guitar
Dealbreaker
Lucked Out
Friday Night
Last Resort
Burn Book
World Implode
LOML
Cool - Bonus Track
track 1: Air Guitar
youtube
I really like this title track!! Very light and breezy, like a breath of fresh air. Personally, I prefer the studio recorded version to the live version, and I was quite disappointed in the live performance (at least the one at baybeats 2019)
solid 8/10
track 2: Dealbreaker
youtube
One of my favourite tracks from this album 😌 I love the synth beat that reminds me of the end of Something For 2 / start of Chaeri by Magdalena Bay. 8.5/10!
track 3: Lucked Out
youtube
I didn't like this track too much, but I love the transition to Friday Night! That gives the album some bonus points, for making me relisten to tracks because of the cohesion :)
I think the 4-track start of the album is the strongest. 6/10
track 4: Friday Night
youtube
Another of my favourites, the outro?? AMAZING. I love synthpop so much and this is just perfect! A similar synth in the bridge was also the reason why I liked The Beginning in Mercurial World
8.5/10
track 5: Last Resort
youtube
This track grew on my after a few relistens, now I jam out at the opening. When I was listening this album while doing work, I kept subconsciously tapping my feet along to the beat,, it's just so good.
7/10
track 6: Burn Book
youtube
This track stood out to me on my first listen, although I'm not too sure why. I really like the melody, and it never gets boring even though the track is considered quite long (at least in a short-track pop world to increase the chances of virality).
7.5/10
track 7: World Implode
youtube
This grew on me, and "we're still picking up from yesterday" is so memorable!! the line stood out to me and when I think of this track, I think of this line. The bridge×chorus is quite interesting! 7/10
track 8: LOML
youtube
Might be my least favourite track from this album :(
It's still very decent, just not as memorable as the rest. 6/10
track 9: Cool (bonus)
youtube
Also not my favourite, although it's left off the album which makes the album stronger as a whole
5.5/10
best lyrics --
"Tracing the outlines of my sunken eyes
So burnt out from the light"
"Maybe it's time we recognise the flowers we are not"
overall, Sobs is really good at lyrics!! I had to search up the lyrics for all the tracks and I was so impressed at everything. Such vivid storytelling 😭
Air Guitar is the strongest lyric-wise, with metaphors and descriptions that are very effective.
my final rankings
Dealbreaker
Air Guitar
Friday Night
Last Resort
Burn Book
World Implode
Lucked Out
LOML
Cool - Bonus Track
Almost the original order, the album starts off really well but gets weaker towards the end.
Given the number of times I mentioned Mag Bay/Mercurial World,, yes this album really reminds me of that. Which is a massive thing because that album is basically perfect synthpop, and very critically acclaimed. Amazing pop album from Sobs, I love their overall sound! I'm really a sucker for pop (recently.. synthpop), because I enjoyed this album a lot more than Catflap and Telltale Signs 🤭
