Albums of 2023:

#3 - The Record by Boygenius

this album feels like spending time with close friends and savouring every single moment. phoebe, lucy, and julien each provide a different element into this album to make it feel very intimate.

the tracks led by phoebe are quite emotional and confessional, sharing stories of longing for a lost love in emily i'm sorry and dealing with mental health stuggles in not strong enough. by contrast, julien's songs are generally more reckless with a lot of adrenaline, telling stories of a spontaneous road trip with friends in $20 and a near-death experience in anti-curse. these themes are tied together by lucy's songs, which cherish the bond shared between the three band members. "you could absolutely break my heart; that's how i know that we're in love," she states rather beautifully in we're in love. the three different personalities in the songs remind me a lot of hanging out with my own friends, giving the album a very nostalgic feel.

the style of the album also gives it a lot of replay value. from the a cappella singing on without you, without them, to the punchy guitars on satanist, to the soft plucking on revolution 0, there's something available for every listener to latch on to.
