can you explain family abolition in a few words?

sure. there is no one unitary 'family abolitionist' perspective so be aware that i'm explaining this as a marxist and not as an anarchist or a radical feminist.

basically, "the family" is a social construct rather than a fixed self-evident truth. the family has been created and can be shaped, altered, or--indeed--abolished. this is evinced by the broad anthropological and historical record of radical transformations in what constitutes 'the family' (cf. clans, the extended family, the nuclear family). viewing the family as such opens it up to critique and also to the concept that it could be replaced with something better (in much the same way that, for communist and anarchist, refusing to accept the timelessness / naturalization of the bourgeois state opens up new horizons of political thought outside of engagement with electoral politics.)

among these critiques of the family are:

that it is a tool of patriarchal control over women and children by creating an economic dependence upon spouses / parents

ergo, that it enables and causes 'abuse' -- that child abuse, spousal abuse, and intimate partner violence are not abberations of 'the family' but in fact a natural consequence of its base premises re: power and control

that it serves as a site of invisiblised economic labour (e.g. housework)

that it is a tool of the capitalist (formerly the feudal) economy's reproduction of inequality via e.g. inheritance laws

that it serves as a site of normalization and reproduction of hegemonic ideology--i.e. that it is the site where heteronormativity, cisnormativity, gender roles, class positionality, & more are ingrained in children

among solutions family abolitionists propose to remedy it are:

the total dissolution of any legal privilege conferred by romantic or blood relationship in favour of total freedom for any group of people to form a household and cohabitate

the recognition of housework, the work of childrearing, & the general tasks of social reproduction as 'real' labour to be distributed fairly and not according to formal or informal (feminized) hierarchies

the economic and legal freedom of children--(i.e., allowing children unconditional access to food and shelter outside 'the family', allowing children the legal right to informed consent and self-determination)

similarly, the emancipation of women from economic dependence on their partners--both of these can only really be achieved via socialism (as marx put it, 'women in the workplace' only trade patriarchal dependence upon a husband for patriarchal dependence upon an employer)

communal caretaking of children, the sick, & the elderly

yeah. i know. this is a lot of words. its not few words. sorry. it's a complex topic innit. this is a few words For Me consideri ng that i've got a long-ass google doc open where i'm writing up a whole damn essay on this exact topic.

tldr: the family is not inevitable, it is constructed & can be replaced with something better. full economic freedom from dependence on interpersonal familial relationships for everybody now. check out cuba's 2022 family code for an idea of what this could look like as practical legislation.

I know a lot of people are intimidated by the prospect of working with thread, but IMO that's where interlocking crochet really shines, and it's not as hard as one might imagine—everyone has limits, but if (relatively) simple embroidery like cross-stitch is or would be achievable and fun for you, so would thread crochet. For reference, that image shows a 1.30mm hook and #10 (beige) and #20 (green) crochet thread. The patch is about 4in/10cm wide, and that represents, I don't know, 4, 5 hours of work? [Pattern here. End mandatory shill.]

In any case there are 2 things sighted people can buy relatively cheaply that will make any kind of detailed handiwork much easier: (tl;dr it's reading glasses and a lamp)

Drug-store/dollar-store reading glasses (or clip-ons like these if you already wear glasses, or whatever form of magnification works best for you), and the cheapest positionable LED ring light you can find. The reflection in my glasses is a powerful steel thing with a clamp mount and built-in magnification, but we have a few $15 plastic, rechargeable jobs from Online with big clips for bases that are if anything more versatile.

Anyway. It doesn't matter how old you are or how good you think your eyesight is, magnification and more light will make things vastly easier for you, and if you elect not to use them I will assume you are being lazy, vain, silly, or some combination of those things.

(nondysphoric trans anon again) really appreciate the recs, especially the anthologies! i'll definitely check them out. just to clarify, i completely agree that dysphoria is a social dynamic and not just a symptom, and that dismantling the structures and social norms that cause/worsen dysphoria is necessary. i've also met many trans folks who have at one time been unaware of their dysphoria in the ways you described, and i'm sorry that you also had to go through that. personally, i've used "nondysphoric" to mean that i actively like and find happiness in my body/physical appearance, regardless of my mental state or external expectations. i was also aware that i felt this way (and that it's considered atypical) when i saw myself as a cis girl. i'd like to meet other people (trans or otherwise) who've had experiences similar to mine someday, if possible, but for now i'd just like to learn from people who are navigating dysphoria that's considered atypical, regardless of the language they use to describe it. i'd be open to using a framework other than considering myself nondysphoric, but i'm not sure what that would look like yet. i also know that i probably wouldn't have had many of these positive experiences without the specific privileges and social contexts i grew up with, and i'm trying to understand that better as well. thanks again for responding!

Michael Chiesa dominates Neil Magny to earn UD over 5 rounds

As the world’s only Neil Magny fan, this one hurt a little. I don’t hate Chiesa and I’ve always defended him as being better than people give him credit for. I’m mostly just hurt Chiesa will continue to elevate his coach Rick Little, who is just....hard to take seriously.

Anyway, Chiesa looked amazing as positional grappler. Dude just floated between positions so smoothly, making it damn near impossible for Magny to get to his feet. Before his fight with RDA, I always thought of Chiesa as more a early career Do Bronx style sprint grappler who needed to chase a sub to be effective on the ground. Both have since proven they’re actually really good positionally as long as they aren’t draining themselves. I don’t trust Chiesa’s wrestling chops as he moves up the division though. Magny was feeding him those body lock takedowns and that’s not something I see him hitting on a Leon Edwards or a Colby Covington.

Not sure who Chiesa gets next after a big main event performance like that. Had that been a co-headliner, I’d say Li Jingliang but it feels too high profile to be anything but a top 5-er next. Maybe Wonderboy? (Don’t see that going well for him).

note: some mods, though very few and for the most part insignificant, were found on the steam workshop. so if it doesn’t appear on the nexus, you’ll find it there.

some general advice for new modders/just reminders - 

- always check compatibility. some mods have patches to use in combination with other mods. always read the description too. 

- if you’re able, cleaning plugins is always good. i was never able to get a hang of it but that doesn’t mean you won’t have better luck.

- never, ever test mods with an actual playthrough. the chances of corruption are small, but there. start a new game; if you can’t bother with the helgen intro, use Quick Start to skip past it and begin at the cave exit instead. 

- load order. can’t go wrong with LOOT or Wrye Bash. imo LOOT is easier to install and use but it’s all up to preference.

OVERHAULS -

Noble Skyrim (a HUGE overhaul of basically all exterior textures. but, if you don’t like the look this gives, i’d suggest 2k Textures for a more vanilla feel but in higher res, or Tamriel Reloaded - Textures and Parallax.)

Realistic Water Two (get the enb textures, with the watercolor effect too. they have a non-enb version as well, if you don’t use enb.)

aMidianborn retextures (i use almost everything. weapons, armor, creatures, dragonborn dlc, except the terrain overhaul. i also use the differently ebony and glass variants plugins, which basically mean that there’s multiple variants of the armor with the different retextures. they’re so cool, it’s a must.)

RUSTIC ( i also use almost everything from this too. alchemy/enchanting tables, daedra, death hounds, dinnerware, east empire company signs (i really don’t know why), elder scroll, monuments/tombstones, nordic murals, pottery, silverware, standing stones, windows, and word walls.)

okay, here’s the thing. i’ve been modding skyrim nonstop for three years now. i’ve gone through, a lot of enbs. the big ones, the small ones. rudy, tetrachromatic, project enb, you name it. and here’s the one that i finally found that works great, lots of customizability, awesome fps, and looks fucking fantastic. 

it’s called seasons of skyrim. easy install, easy uninstall if you don’t like it. nothing else. includes further darker dungeons as well as revamped exterior fog.

my configuration’s here.

but let’s assume you don’t want to use an enb. that’s fine! there’s a lot of other ways to get dynamic lightning too. i used to use Climates of Tamriel, or ELFX, or Realistic Lighting Overhaul. note that i’m almost certain that RLO hand places light sources, so i don’t know how altered cells would go. you might be able to avoid conflict by loading the changing mod after RLO? but i don’t know for sure. 

if you want help with installing anything/with enbs or are new to it, i’m always down to help.

I could hear what sounded like thunder in the distance while sitting on my porch earlier tonight. But it couldn't be. The booms were to closely timed. I'm pretty sure that there's protests going on in Tampa tonight but they're not being covered.

A couple of weeks ago a protest nearby on Sligh and 56th was covered as just a random large gathering of four hundred people that ended up with four gunshots.

This is crazy.

I wonder what happens when a repressive state feels that protestors on the streets will all be labeled rioters and looters by the media or altogether ignored. They can do all they want to them. Unleash all their fancy anti personnel weaponry on the populace. First amendment rights be damned.

I remember the reason I found out how massive the Ferguson riots were was because they were all being covered here and the live stream links being posted here on Tumblr.

There's so many protests and so many police shootings of unarmed black and brown men, an out of control pandemic and a crashing economy... and an inadequate private sector to deal with any of these issues after finally getting their way and destroying our federal democratic government***.

1. Have A Seat

Ivy haphazardly pulled into one of the many empty parking spaces and threw the silver Nissan in park, opening her door.

"It is too fuckin hot," she groaned leaning out, her white coffin nails resting on the inside door handle. "I know I said I wanted summer to hurry up and get here but bitch I'm bout ready for fall.."

She was crooked and straddling the white line. If she'd parked between cars, she may have backed out to straighten up so that no one would dent her door or chip her paint, but since the only other cars were at the surrounding businesses, she closed her door and lifted in her seat to bare her full rows of teeth in the review mirror, passing her tongue over them. She hadn't flossed in the past two weeks, but she'd brushed her teeth for a second time in the day after lunch with a travel sized toothbrush in the bathroom at her job.

Turning her head right to left in the mirror, she examined all of her teeth close up before checking the corners of her eyes for boogers, the green of her irises lit by the sun shining through the window.

"My eyes look bout big as shit," she mumbled pulling her tube of chapstick to smear back and forth across her full naked lips without breaking her own eye contact.

"Okay shut up.." She pushed the radio to quiet the new Katy Perry song threatening to assault her ears and looked at her reflection once more before turning off the car. The A/C cut with it of course which meant it was time to go.

Climbing from the car, she looked up at the brick building with one of its offices labeled Orthodontist. Luckily, it was easy to find, she'd just never been inside. She drove passed it every day to get to work. It was a nine minute drive from her apartment. From work, it was about thirty minutes however and that was how long it'd taken to get there today.

The weighted glass door was tinted but once she put a little muscle to it, it opened to reveal a small but comfortable looking space with calm water blue walls and daytime television at a murmuring volume, mounted to the far right wall.

Two opposing leather navy couches sat invitingly. A small blue model sailboat sat on the tall receptionists counter that Ivy found herself standing in front of. It seemed to come to her neck. A petite black girl with long black box braids and deep skin of about the same age was typing on the computer, but she looked up immediately, a polite and professional smile on her face as she turned in her chair. She had small elfish features, high pointy ears, and perfect teeth.

"Hi, you have an appointment?"

"Yeah, Ivy Stevens. This is my first time here though, I-"

"Stevens? Your name is Stevens too? That's so cool. Dr. Stevens is amazing. Have you already spoken to him about your records?"

"Yeah, my dentist said he sent the requested information and I wondered if y'all got it."

"One sec, hon, I'll pull you up. Okay.. Yep, we've got em. Your insurance.. Okay.. Looks like you're set just fill out the intake paperwork."

Taking the clipboard, Ivy sat on the couch closest to the door she'd come through. She completed the paperwork fairly quickly before handing it back.

"Thank you. Have a seat. Dr. Stevens will be right with you."

As Ivy returned to the couch, her eyes darted about taking in her surroundings. It had a nautical feel. Artwork hung on the walls consisting of framed big ships on the ocean and then there were the abstract paint swipes with various shades of blue. Magazines were splayed on the end tables that met each couch and there was a floor abacus-type game meant for kids set aside neatly under the opposite end table along with a puzzle and a coloring book.

As nice as it was, right now A/C was its best feature.

"..I don't care what he told you, if it's not in writing.. see that's why you need to get things in writing," Judge Mathis nodded sternly toward the defendant before grabbing his gavel. "Case dismissed."

The woman tried to argue.

"No evidence, no case," he countered.

"Stevens," a questioning voice called chipperly.

Ivy turned her head to see the elfish girl smiling brightly as she held open the wooden door conjoining the waiting room to the hall. Her clothes were different. This time she wore light blue. Ivy's eyes darted briefly to the receptionist's desk and the girl was sitting there too in the same white getup. Okay identical twins. It clicked in Ivy's mind making sense and she followed the blue twin to the back.

"Have a seat and Dr. Stevens will be out in a second," the blue elf said disappearing. Ivy settled onto the bed-like dentist's chair with her legs extended, ankles crossed, and her keys and phone in hand. Her eyes shut as she waited, resting her lids. It was about two minutes or so before she heard shuffling.

She looked over to her left to find a man wearing light blue scrubs under a crisp white coat sitting on a stool and looking intently at a computer screen. She could tell he was young from the back, close to her age. The back of his head was faded into a top full off short dreadlocks. His long leg was extended off to the side, telling Ivy that he was tall and his poised left hand lightly touched the mouse. It was lively and held no wrinkles or ring. It looked strong though he moved with a gentle flow of ease.

Even through the scrubs and the coat, his build was such that she could tell he was active. He was visibly fit like he did intense sports or spent hours at the gym. Ivy watched his back waiting to see his face, but he was focused on the screen. Her nails drummed against her  Rick and Morty phone case in curiosity.

"Ms. Stevens.. you sure we aren't related?" The texture and richness of his tone and his cadence said round-the-way nigga, but the way he enunciated sounded practiced for white America.

"Depends.. your family from Florida?"

"Nah." The warmth of the smile in his voice could be felt and Ivy continued to stare at his locks and shoulders waiting to see his face to see if it matched. "Cali by way of Wakanda."

"Orlando from Antigua."

"I can hear it in your voice. What you doing on the west coast?" He clicked the mouse a couple of times and slid his foot as she tried hard to see more of his side profile. She could see he had a beard and small studded earrings

"What you mean? I ain't think I had an accent."

"Believe me when I say you do."

Finally he turned and Ivy's eyes widened as she whispered a low, "Damn" catching his reaction.

"You good?" His brows rose and he slid his stool to her right side getting closer. His dainty flattered smile gave her a glimpse of a few white teeth. She liked that. He was sexy and he had nice teeth. A good job too?

"Alright Ms. Stevens," he paused looking her in the eye, "Looks like you're here for a cleaning but you also want a filling.."

She wanted to be filled all right.

"I'll need to take some pictures of your teeth first if that's alright. It should be fairly painless. We'll work on the composite filling for a natural look and then we'll move into the cleaning."

"That's fine."

"Have you felt any pain or discomfort in your teeth?"

"Yeah, my bottom row. Right in here," she pointed watching his eyes train onto the tooth in question. His focus was making her hot.

Erik cranked the womans's chair leaning her torso back so that he could see her teeth more clearly. He draped a lead apron over her chest and took a blue rubber glove and pulled it onto his hand, pulling and adjusting the thin rubber over his palm. His middle finger held down her bottom lip gently as he peered into her mouth looking to the tooth she'd pointed out. It was a molar, tooth 19 to be specific.

"Bite down."

He placed a positioner between her top and bottom teeth and positioned his x-ray cylinder getting behind the radiation generator to take the picture. He repeated the process on both sides of her mouth.

"See, painless," he smiled moving back to the computer screen to analyze the x-rays. He could see the negative space in the tooth in question along with another tooth. "Looks like two cavities."

"The fuck? Two?"

"Don't worry I'm a fill em both today and you'll be good to go... just remember to floss. Always floss. If you go by the receptionist desk before you go, Saraya will make sure you get floss along with a sample of listerine... Okay." He moved back to her right side and pulled out a q-tip. "Here we go, open up for me?"

Nervously she opened her mouth and he swiped the q-tip gently over her gums.

"This is a topical numbing cream so that when I inject you.. you won't feel it. Ideally when you're getting work done, you don't wanna feel it."

He didn't expect an answer because she couldn't yet move her mouth, but the conversation was mostly to ease her anxiety. Patients tended to relax somewhat as long as he spoke to them constantly.

"That numbing gel kicking in yet?"

"Uh-huh," she grunted.

"Good.. Now, this is the anaesthetic. I'm a inject you and you should barely feel it."

"O-ha," she grunted. His experience as a dentist translated her response automatically. Okay, she'd said. He presented the needle and poked her gums at the injection site. He waited a few moments having injected her,  walking over to the computer again.

"How you doing," he asked as his fingers drummed on the keyboard. Her voice was low in response.

"I'm doing okay."

"Good.. I'm just giving it time to kick in. The more time you give it, the less you feel."

"That's good. I don't wanna feel it, I heard it could hurt and I don't like pain.." Her voice was getting lower and lower.

"Any moment now," he assured her letting the room go quiet as he stepped out for a minute. On his return, he went straight back to her x-rays before continuing to type through a couple of silent minutes.

"We still doing alright?"

No response. He waited a second deciding to ask again.

"Ms. Stevens.. you alright? How numb are you right now from a scale of 1-10."

Her only response was soft but heavy breathing. His fingers went still on the keypad, and he looked over at the woman to see that her eyes were shut. Her lips were slightly parted. He waved his hand in front of her eyelids getting no response.

"Saraya," he called and his receptionist appeared almost immediately, her smile wide. "Bring me my tools and lock the front door."

Her eyes glinted, her excitement rising. She turned leaving from his sight returning with a rolling silver metallic cart stocked with tools that were neatly arranged. He turned back to the computer screen exiting and discarding the dummy word document he'd been typing gibberish in for the past few minutes. When he turned back, Saraya was close to the woman's face.

"Aht, let's give Ms. Stevens some space please."

Saraya's hand reached out to stroke the woman's face with her index and Erik picked up the Bushcraft knife from the metallic cart swiping his thumb lightly over the sharp, smooth edge. It was a medium-sized knife with a sturdy, thick steel blade. Not one of his better knives, but useful and handy.

"Her skin is so soft," Saraya grinned in awe, her fingers lightly brushing the sleeping woman's cheek. She flinched, her smile dropping, and she froze when the knife whizzed by her cheek knicking her in the exact same spot where she'd touched the patient before thudding to the ground.

"That was my second time telling you.. Don't make me tell you again."

Saraya's face had fallen from the shock, but now the grin was back full force. "You spared me," she purred slowly standing and putting distance between herself and the body. "..She's all yours." Backing from the room with her hands in the air she disappeared and Erik's eyes returned to the sleeping young lady.

He sighed looking from her face to the phone and keys in her hand. Those had to be taken and he had the perfect space for them on the second tier of his cart. He was sure to turn the phone completely off.

"Let's get you trussed up, Ms. Stevens," he whispered reaching for the crimson bundle of rope. The color excited him as he wrapped it around his hand.

Righteous - Your Identity in Christ!

Subject: A closer look at who you are in Christ. What your new righteous identity reveals about God, and what it requires of us!

One of the most incredible aspects of our new God-given identity is that of being righteous. This is a true treasure. Being made righteous before God is a gem in the heart of the believer. But what exactly does this mean?

We have heard about this aspect of our new identity. We have heard it declared. We have heard it confessed. We have heard it offered as a positive affirmation meant to reinforce who we are! The way our righteous identity is most regularly taught is not wrong. It is, however, more than a vocal profession. It simply leaves us with a desire for something with a more profound effect on our lives. It is a revelation of something deeper. As it is with most biblical identity statements, a closer look at our identity as righteous will reveal something about God. It will, also, reveal something about what is expected of those made righteous.

What does it mean to be righteous!

“In other words, righteousness is tied to the act of justification. This action occurs when a good judge – a judge who desires fair justice – makes a declaration of one’s innocence. The declaration of one’s innocence is the act of Justification. Upon receiving a just declaration of innocence, the individual on trial is reckoned righteous (right/just) in the eyes of the court of law. The declaration of an innocent verdict leaves the accused in right-standing with the judge and governing body. Thus righteousness is begun in them by declaring them righteous" (Peter Toon).

This is why understanding ourselves as righteous is one of the most treasured, life-giving realities. This is a gift to the undeserving that is centered in the heart of God’s mercy, grace, and love. Our fallen and sinful nature is inherently guilty before a good, fair, and just God. And so while we naturally deserve to receive a damning verdict, God graciously frees us from shame and guilt if we were to place our faith in Jesus Christ. What an incredible God – not requiring of us the impossible task of trying to earn our own salvation and right-standing. Instead, He gifts righteousness to mankind because of the substitutionary death of the Messiah. God knew that “what was impossible with man is possible with God” so He made our identity as righteous attainable through believing in Jesus.

Gal. 2:16 states, “yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified” (ESV).

As mentioned in our introduction and as you can tell from this teaching, any discussion or study on the Believer’s identity requires us, first, to ask the question, “what does this say about God?” And this is especially true of our identity as righteous. ​

Theological Implications - What does it tell us about God?

It should be evident from the legal description above, God is a good and justice-loving Judge. This is both a refreshing and terrifying reality. God is the ultimate Judge over all of creation. As stated in Philippians, there will be a day when “every knee will bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ” is the righteous standard by which everyone will be judged (Phil. 2:10-11).

Furthermore, God’s generosity is set clearly upon display, here. The mercy and love of the generous Judge are seen in that the righteous standard of Christ is imputed to man through faith in Jesus. What an incredible revelation of our Lord! We have the legal and spiritual requirements for an innocent verdict gifted (or imparted) to us if we personally place our faith in Jesus. On that great and glorious day, when we stand before the Holy Judge, all of those who received the innocence of Christ will be ushered into the eternal state to enjoy the blessings of infinite joy and painless perfection. Whoah! How generous and merciful is that!? We do not deserve it. We could not earn it. Rather, God generously allows the righteous standard found in Messiah to be gifted to all who would believe.

“First, Yahweh-Elohim, the Lord God, is righteous in that he speaks and Acts in accordance with the purity of his own holy nature; further, what he says and does for Israel is in accordance with his establishment of the covenant with this people (see Psalm 22:31; 40:10; 51:14; 71:15-24; Amos 5:21-24). Micah declared the righteousness of God as his faithfulness to keep and act within the covenant and thus to save Israel from her enemies, as well as to vindicate the penitent” (Peter Toon).

What does this mean? This means exactly what we have been discussing. The gift of a righteous identity illustrates something about the actions of God. It should be evident, now, that we cannot look at our new identity in Christ without seeing how God interacts with mankind – specifically the goodness of God! What Peter Toon is trying to highlight is the concept of righteousness is connected to God’s covenant faithfulness. God is faithful and acts faithfully to keep and apply His covenant promises to His people. Simply put, Romans 1:17 shows us that God’s righteousness is seen in that He is the faithful giver of this incredible gift. From the faith of our ancestors to the faith of our contemporaries, God is faithful to act in accordance with His character. It is profoundly refreshing to know that our righteousness in Christ gives us a very personal and intimate glimpse into the faithful actions of a Covenant Keeping God!

Practical Expectations - What demands does this place on us?

While the term “demand” may make us a bit uneasy, it does need to be understood that being made righteous places certain expectations upon us (reference work from Douglas Buckwalter). We can know that being made righteous was not without cause. We were made righteous for a purpose. It needs to be understood that the purpose of this gift is more than just vociferous affirmations and confession. Here, we will look at the purpose of this reality and attempt to offer the expectations placed upon us by way of that purpose.“ (3:16; NIV). This means the expectation of us is to let the Joy of our right standing before God move the heart to works of righteousness. After having been reckoned right before God, our lives should intersect that reality.

​If you have heard any teachings on your new righteous identity, it is clear that it offers a value proposition for who we are. First, it shows us that we are fully and completely absolved of guilt before God. The technical terminology is "positional righteousness.” Before God, we are wholly vindicated and made right. We are positionally viewed by God as being perfectly innocent in His presence. This does not, of course, mean that we cannot sin or cannot make mistakes. Rather, this shows us that according to heaven’s judicial system we are innocent before God! What a treasured reality.

Also, it proves to the soul that we have entered into a covenant relationship with God (1 Peter 3:12, “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer...”). While being absolved of guilt, and spiritually and positionally viewed as justified, it declares our right-standing before the Lord. In short, this means we can enjoy a shameless and condemnationless relationship with God. Our right-standing with God allows us to experience the full joys of a relationship with our Savior! What a treasured reality.

This is true and wonderful, but we must ask still one more question. “what demand does this place on us?” There are two primary demands that being made righteous places upon the believer.

First, it is clear that being made righteous – being given the gift of righteousness before God – means that we are to live righteously. This point becomes clear in one of my favorite Scriptures. In Philippians 3, God inspired Paul to write about one is made righteous before God. In summation, it is by placing your faith in Jesus Christ that justifies you before God and makes you righteous. But in one of the most profound, practical applications to our new identity, the Bible states, “Only let us live up to what we have already attained” (3:16; NIV). This means the expectation of us is to let the joy of our right-standing before God move the heart to works of righteousness. After having been reckoned right before God, our lives should intersect that reality.

Look at what Peter Toon says about righteousness as it pertains to the life of the Believers:

“… the covenant people of God are called to live righteously, that is, in conformity to the demands of the covenant and according to God’s will (see Psalm 1:4-6; 11:7; 72:1; Isa 1:16-17). Having within the covenantal relation with God the gift of salvation, they are to behave as the people of the holy Lord.”

Scripture also attests to this. We know that faith is pleasing to God, but we also know that we are called (upon being saved) to live righteous and holy lives. Psalm 11:7 declares, “For the LORD is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.” And again, Ephesians 2:8-10 highlights, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” This means that our new righteous identity demands that our lives be lived ever in conformity to the righteous standard of Jesus Christ. We are to “live up to what we have already attained.”

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:8-10).

Lastly, it demands the refreshing and regular engagement of our relationship with God. Like briefly mentioned above, the gift of right-standing before the Lord allows us to enter into a relationship with God – one that is devoid of shame, condemnation, and guilt. We have been made right with God, and now we can freely enter into that relationship through prayer, fasting, reading the Scripture, fellowship, etc.

The other purpose for having been made righteous before God to freely, regularly, and consistently enjoy our relationship. We can engage and press into a relationship with God. One that is not limited by guilt or shame. We can be bold and confident. We can seek the Lord and know that He is near. We no longer need to consider ourselves separated from Him. We have been made right with the purpose of relationship. May we, now, go and seek our Savior in ways that are unrestrained by condemnation and fear.

“And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father” (Eph. 2:17-18).
