You know, there's a fundamental disconnect that I've noticed in discussions about the police in the US that I wanted to dive into.
On the one side are the people who propose police reform and suggest redistributing some police tasks (and at least some of the budget that goes with them) to other agencies and on the other side are people who oppose police reform and argue that more police and more police funding are needed instead.
What's interesting about this is that, if you dig into the arguments a bit, these people actually agree on a good deal. Dig a little bit into the pro-reform arguments and you find that most of them want the police to focus on violent crime instead of things like drug offenses, homelessness, and mental illness. Dig a bit into the anti-reform arguments and you find that they, too, are focused on violent crime and the need to combat it.
Once you understand that, the data on police activity get really interesting. For example, how many people are aware that police only make an arrest in about 20% of reported violent crimes and only achieve a conviction in about 4%? In addition to this, an estimated half of all violent crimes are never reported at all, meaning that only about 10% of violent crimes end in an arrest and 2% in a conviction. (1)
How many people realize that only 4% of police time is actually dedicated to dealing with violent crime at all? (2) A 2020 study in New Haven, CT, for example, found that only 4.4% of police dispatches were related to violent crime. (3) In 1996, "[f]ewer than 5 percent of most cities' total dispatched calls… are made quickly enough for officers to intervene or make an arrest." (4) There's reason to believe that it's gotten better with the proliferation of cell phones which can automatically locate their position, but improvement from a very poor baseline could still leave you with a very poor result.
So if police aren't spending most of their time on violent crime, what are they doing instead? Well, to take one large police force as an example, in 2022 the LA County Sheriff's Department spent about 90% of their time on officer-initiated traffic stops. (5) In fact, as of 2016, there were over 20 million traffic stops nationally. (6) Overall that seems to be by far the largest use of police time and resources.
In other words, one of the biggest issues we face is that police aren't actually spending most of their time (and probably resources as well) on the one thing that most Americans on all sides of the police reform issue seem to want them to be doing. (7)
Those who oppose police reform argue that police need more money, people, and resources to devote to violent crime while those who propose police reform argue that, actually, police need other responsibilities taken off of their plates in order to focus on violent crime instead.
I'll admit, reviewing this data definitely puts me more in the pro-reform camp than I already was, am I missing something here?

Of course, the burkini ban is messed up on grounds of religious freedom and racial discrimination. But also
Under any other circumstances, people would be HORRIFIED at a government mandate that women have to show a certain amount of skin. Like. That’s fucking dystopian, and the absolute opposite of feminism. If a government tried to pass a law that all women had to wear tube tops and miniskirts to go outside, people would rightfully be up in arms demanding blood
But because it’s targeting a marginalized religious group, many folks are lauding the blatant forced sexualization of women. Appalling
(apparently the ban also outlaws things like sun – protecting bathing suits if they cover too much skin. Which like. Yes, let’s give everyone skin cancer just so we can spite a religion we’ve decided to hate. Sounds like a good plan </s>)

Pargas’ resignation comes ahead of a rare Saturday “special meeting” that was called by the city to decide his fate. His resignation is effective immediately, according to McLaughlin.
Pargas, 65, was expected to be terminated during Saturday’s scheduled meeting, if he had not been terminated by then.
He was placed on administrative leave by McLaughlin in July when videos from body-worn cameras raised questions about whether he had taken any action to assume command. A recent CNN report demonstrated Pargas was aware students were alive and needed rescue during the shooting but failed to organize help.
Supposedly he was going to be fired (and lose his retirement benefits), and he saw the writing on the wall.

i think kim is just as complex of a character as harry, but i think a good amount of players (not all, but a chunk) choose to unflinchingly characterize him as “the Good Cop” and leave it at that.
