Zero has an edgy pokémon coma theory, and I kind of love it.

Obviously this is contradicted by a bunch of things, and presumably isn't secret lore the devs decided to include. But in the spirit of demonstrating how easy it is to develop a plausible conspiracy theory with sufficiently hyperactive pattern-matching, here's some "evidence" we found:

Apart from Wishiwashi, which might be a separate phenomenon (where do the extras even come from when it does Schooling?), no pokémon which is actually multiple pokémon exceeds a squad of six members. Falinks tops out at six, and Exeggcute has six but one of their heads exploded.

Random trainers around the map tend to only have two or three pokémon in their team. Game balance reasons? No! Only career trainers like the Elite Four or breeders bond with the maximum safe number of pokémon at once!

Gary/Blue has seven distinct pokémon, but only swaps one out when it- judging by its disappearance in the fight in Lavender Tower- literally dies.

The protagonist of gen 1, Red, shows up in the next game... totally nonverbal, hanging out at the top of a mountain, unable to interact except to battle. He's lost his mind to bonding with too many pokémon! The price of power!

Things this theory explains:

Multi-pokemon like Magneton- what makes Magneton a single pokémon, and not two or four Magnemite? Magneton is the configuration of Magnemite that's capable of bonding with a trainer as a single pokémon.

This is the function of pokéballs- they're a prosthesis for the organ pokémon have but humans don't that allows them to form psychic mind-meld links with other pokémon. It's not mind-control or convenient loyalty- you're in each other's heads now. Escape from a pokéball is rejection of the psychic link.

The original four trade evolutions- Gengar, Alakazam, Machamp, Golem- all become more humanlike on evolving. This is a side effect of trading a psychic bond with one human for another one, giving them more humanity to sample.

Things this theory makes way more sinister:

The pokédex quest is way spookier under this paradigm. The box system- if you can't catch more than six, why do boxes exist? Actually, it's weird that they exist at all, isn't it? Boxing the majority of your pokémon is a weird neglectful thing that the games just kind of pretend doesn't happen- trainers rarely if ever acknowledge its existence.

What if most trainers don't HAVE boxes? What if that's something you have, because the evil professor gave you a special pokédex that can access a private computer system belonging to a confederate? For example "Bill's PC" or "Lanette's PC", as opposed to "[playername]'s PC"? You don't normally keep pokémon in indefinite stasis in a computer system- this weird app just exists to allow you to complete the pokédex without your brain exploding!

In Red/Blue/Yellow, Oak gives Blue a pokédex, sure, but he clearly makes no attempt to fill it out. And... really, why would he? He didn't give his grandson the special pokédex that cares about whether you've caught pokémon. He just gave him the normal one! The one that's already filled out! Because of course a filled pokédex already exists! It's yours that records new information only when you catch stuff.

The implied endgame here is... the professor wants to create a pokémon-catcher capable of melding with a legendary pokémon, to interrogate it about the secrets of life.

There are so many levels on which this doesn't even kinda work, but it's extremely fun to occasionally cut loose and take a swim in some cool refreshing Edge.

"Wh-- Hey, buddy, what's wrong with the PC?"

Kerry tapped out her password slowly and with a little irritation. Curse these claws! Just barely dexterous enough to be annoying to use!

The sound of a log-in connection to Lanette's system gave Kerry some of the best news she'd had in days. No biometrics! TrubbishTreats hadn't steered her wrong!

Wally, trying to avoid coughing and wheezing, set the cask down in the Safari park lobby. "please tell me we're not going to keep that pace the whole time..."

"Is... this... your Absol, sir...?"

Kerry loaded Bunny into the PC and swapped her out for Spiritomb.

As soon as the Dusk Ball appeared, black and green marks started to waft out from it.

Wally opened the cask.

Kerry dunked the ball inside, and, with both of their weights together, kept the lid down so Wally could tie it down.

Acting like a pack Pokemon, she let Wally slowly strap it on to her back at her arms.

"YOU WILL LET US OUT OF THIS ACCURSED BALL!"

In response, Kerry shook herself out, just like if she were wet.

The muffled sound of a Poke Ball releasing underwater was swiftly followed by an angry hiss and the cask rattling on her back.

"We're going to Lilycove," Wally said. "Call your friends! Bring a hundred of them! We'll be heading to the new ferry station!"

The second of Celio and Lanette’s twins, her twin brother being Hal. Pangea, while interested in computers, thinks less of code, much rather preferring to study how pokemon would act with it. She would much rather be in an actual lab though, experimenting with pokemon and seeing artificially created ones. Her mother has given her a castform to start. She wants to be a professor when she is older, and has already started taking classes, as well as helping around the nearest lab she can.

Though Bill developed the practical aspects of the Storage System, Lanette (his original co-developer) was the one who upgraded the system to include the more user-friendly elements and added the options for detailed customization by users to better suit their stored Pokemon.

Lots of progress in the Nuzlocke!

First, a new friend!

SO happy to introduce Gamble!

Next, we trained for a bit and met Lanette, the creator of Hoenn’s Pokemon storage system.

Critical Hits can be very scary.

In Meteor Falls, we met Rodney, who may be on the team for the upcoming Gym.

And then Maxie introduced himself.

With Professor Cosmo confirmed to be safe, we trained for a bit longer, and explored the other side of the Falls a bit. We can’t reach the entire route without jumping a one-way cliff and ending up all the way back at Rustboro, so for now I’m holding off on that. There were a few trainers that could still be fought, however. One of the trainers surprised me with a Zangoose.

Um. Please don’t do that.

No, please either stop doing that or use only that move for the entire fight, one or the other.

So with Tina once again the MVP, we were able to train a bit more on the way back to Mt Chimney. And got a pleasant surprise!

Whoo!

The teams are blocking the shortest route to Lavaridge, and we need to go collect that Meteorite for Professor Cosmo anyway and save the volcano. So we get the scenic view!

Team Aqua and Team Magma are having a bit of a fight. Now, if you pressed me hard to pick a preferred team I’d say maybe Aqua, but honestly Magma has a bit of my love too. And I didn’t remember/realize how clearly in the wrong Aqua seems to be. Magma is winning me over a bit by pointing out that what Aqua is doing is basically environmental terrorism. However, Magma’s solution to stop them by summoning a Pokemon of land in a region mostly filled with water isn’t a perfect-

Hello! If you're up for it I desperately need to know more to the story about your OC Linn and what's going on with them with Proton and Bill it's so funny to me that we're both into the same characters in nearly the same way and since I love them and I love shenanigans 👀 spill the tea pls, but it's totally fine if you don't want to I can daydream to anime and vocaloid songs

HI YES i would love to share, let me give you the rundown of their storylines. if you want more on specific things (or if you yourself wanna gush) plz feel free to ask i love talking about it!!!

i almost definitely forgot some details but i think this is a comprehensive basic idea???

(just noticed after writing that it's REALLY long af so i'm gonna put this on a read more sorry ksjdhfk)

so basically it starts off with linn in johto. i haven't decided exactly how but i know linn kept running in with proton who went from needing to take them out (derogatory) to needing to take them out (affectionate). linn decided "why not, he's kinda cute" and the two became a couple with a surprising amount of chemistry

proton tried to get linn to join team rocket (which linn did not want to do because their gym leader father, crasher wake, would probably NOT be a fan of that) but when proton took linn to the hq it's how linn found out they had a godfather (giuseppe) who proton answered to as one of his two bosses (the other being giovanni). we'll remember giuseppe for later

linn and proton, again, got along surprisingly well for their completely opposite lives. linn had completed a good chunk of the dex for sinnoh and hoenn and had received all eight badges from both regions. proton was personally responsible for the mass harvesting of slowpoke tails and had a kill count. somehow these two made it work. although, it did come with linn occasionally having to hide proton from authorities if he was on the run, and a lot of their love life had to stay behind closed doors

there were a few reasons the two of them split. the first was that proton and linn had gotten a little careless with pda and had been spotted by an onlooker who had reported linn as a potential criminal (which was NOT fun to deal with on their end). the second was that their godfather giuseppe did NOT approve of the relationship. out of all four executives, he always liked proton the least. sure, he made money, but the guy was super unhinged and did a lot of extreme crime when all he needed to do was, like, steal shit? the main reason proton's still with team rocket is because he makes a ton of money for the group (and also because if giovanni gets to keep proton, giuseppe can keep jessie & james)

eventually, linn wanted to go explore kanto, so giuseppe personally paid for linn to leave immediately. so linn hopped ship, broke up with proton because turns out he "conveniently" had to stay at his outpost in johto (this was toooootally not a giuseppe move what /s), and made their way across the region

unfortunately, the whole "linn got caught kissing proton and got in trouble because of it" thing meant something in the system had messed with linn's ability to access pokemon, but of course they didn't know about that system, so they trekked down to route 25 and met a delightful guy bill who they fell in love with at literal first sight

(side note i do have a ficlet about them meeting right here)

so bill helped linn get their system back online, gave them an eevee, and the two stay in touch for a while after that. as linn earned some badges, the two talked more and visited each other more often to the point where sometimes linn would take bill to watch them battle (and considering he didn't really battle much if at all, it was an experience for him). linn helped bill get used to battling a bit as well, although he was getting totally sweeped even when linn went easy on him

now, mind you this entire time bill has been getting teased senselessly by lanette and bebe, his pc-admin friends from other regions, ever since in the footnotes of the bug report (from when he met linn) he referred to them as "cute girl". they pushed him to have linn over for dinner more often, or sometimes to stay the night. it's not like he was opposed to the idea, he was just really flustered considering he also was a love at first sight case

meanwhile linn has jessie & james (sent by giuseppe to watch over them) who are teasing them about their little crush on bill and also were big helps for linn's major confession object: a shiny eevee

they bred so many eevees over so much time, none of them thought it would be possible after a while but after what felt like ages a shiny eevee was finally hatched! linn presented the gift to bill on a surprise visit to his cottage, to which he got really REALLY excited to the point where he couldn't NOT give linn a big kiss on the lips. he then knew what he had to do: get linn a luvdisc to show his affections (he heard about the cultural significance from lanette). unfortunately he is not at all used to catching pokemon and had to ask for one via trade instead, but the pokemon eventually got to him and he used it to fully confess to linn

but then here's the final kicker: after months of dating (fun side note, the eevee bill gave linn evolved into an umbreon by now!), bill wants to take linn to see his family.......in JOHTO (specifically goldenrod)

bill had good intentions, he simply wanted to let linn feel more familiar with his life. in fact, linn had considered doing the same and dragging bill to sinnoh to meet their dad and close friends

that being said, linn is hesitant for obvious reasons but agrees anyways because they don't think they'll run into proton in THAT fast.....right?

they do. within 24 hours. proton had gotten word and immediately dropped everything to check it out. bill was also hoping he wouldn't meet proton because (fun fact) that's his COUSIN who he HATES

(short drabble about the cousin thing here but just be aware this is something bill has been plagued with for AGES)

proton basically picks up like he and linn never split with how initially welcoming he seems, recollecting "silly" memories like how linn helped him hide from the police when they were trying to find him as a potential murder suspect (linn was NOT aware that was why proton had stayed with them) or other "fun" stories where it definitely makes linn look like a criminal

and this gets bill LIVID because he wants nothing to do with proton, but also what do you MEAN his girlfriend used to date his BOZO ASSHOLE COUSIN??? and was SUPPORTIVE OF THE CRIME???

antics definitely ensue because proton is most certainly bringing up his times with linn in johto to get under bill's skin (yeah they never got along like ever) and also proton brings up that linn not only has family in team rocket but also linn was granted immunity and even active protection courtesy of team rocket (which bill translates as linn working as a double agent for team rocket)

basically it's like the most unexpected blown out family drama that linn got themself dragged into, except they're way too busy wondering MY BOYFRIEND IS MY LAST EX'S COUSIN??? and it's a total internal crisis

i'd say it's a love rivalry but part of me is like........i wonder if proton is really that into linn anymore or if he just really really wants to cause problems on purpose. to be honest it could also be both, i just think the idea of proton intentionally causing a relationship rift purely for the fun of it feels in-character for my interpretation of him

Oh hey Bill, how does it feel to fly under your own power? I've always wondered how that feels...I've flown on a Pidgeot before but I feel that doing so under your own power must be a completely different experience!

In a word, anonymous . . . it's liberating.

Imagine that you've spent your entire life being held down by weights tied around your limbs. One day, you're able to take off those weights for the first time. Imagine how that must feel, how your limbs feel when you lift them above your head, how fast you run without weights tied around your ankles.

That's what it feels like.

[This answer doesn't surprise Lanette, actually. It doesn't even worry her. She just presses post, then hands the phone back to Bill, and they both stare out at the sunset from atop the lighthouse beacon. She leans against him, hand resting on his wrist, feeling the skin beneath it. Skin, not scales. Not yet. That part surprises her.

It's been several months since the two of them started focusing on other projects. It's not that they had lost interest in the blog. It was more that there didn't seem to be much left to say. Oh, sure, there were questions left unanswered, and Lanette's aware she'll have to make Bill answer them eventually. But . . . it seems less like a priority now. Less important than the world in front of them and the questions they had yet to answer, not from readers but from each other.

How long has it been so far? Half a year since that incident in Crown Tundra. Two since their first adventure into Galar. Lanette isn't even pretending that she'll eventually go home at this point; in a way, she's already there. She knows that's the answer to one of Bill's questions—probably more—but she enjoys the idea of holding out from answering that one, even just for a little while longer.

Bill inhales deeply, rocks back on his heels, and closes his eyes.

"I hope you're not bored," he says.

"What do you mean?" Lanette answers.

"I mean it's been rather quiet," Bill tells her. "We have our research, but how long has it been since we've last had something exciting happen?"

Lanette smirks. "Given the fact that 'exciting' usually ends with one of us kidnapped or stuck as a pokémon, why are you saying that like it's a bad thing?"

"Hm. Maybe you have a point."

Bill opens his eyes, then jumps. Before Lanette can stop him, he's perched on the railing, facing her. And then, he's gone, off the edge and dropping towards the sea. Lanette doesn't have time to shout; her voice catches in her throat as she leans over and stares down at the black waters below.

Then, there's a flash of green and a wind, and she's swept off her feet and arcing into the air until she lands squarely on a flygon's back. Bill beats his wings once, then sets off, flying away from the shore.

"Where are we going?!" Lanette shouts over the wind.

"Off to find some excitement!" Bill calls back. "Let's see which of those two scenarios you're talking about will come up this time!"

It takes a second for that to sink in before Lanette leans against her partner's back. She pulls herself close to his ear.

"You know," she says, "I wasn't going to say anything beforehand, but supposedly, there have been new legendary sightings in Sinnoh."

Bill glances at her without turning his head. Then, his dragon's snout twists into a wicked grin, and he picks up speed.

"Do you think Bebe has enough room for a trainer and her dragon?" he asks.

"Absolutely not," Lanette replies, "but I'd love to see the look on her face when we drop by anyway."]

It was folded carefully, like a formal letter of challenge.

They were excellent uses of strategem, and I commend your use of peculiar Pokemon to fantastic effect.
