It’s Fine Press Friday!  
This week we’re highlighting our 1942 Nonesuch Press edition of French Naturalist writer Guy de Maupassant’s (1850-1893) most popular novel, A Woman’s Life. Translated into English by frequent de Maupassant translator Marjorie Laurie, this publication features an introduction from writer and critic Edmond Jaloux (1878-1949) along with delicately enchanting illustrations by Edy Legrand (1892-1970) which were hand-colored by commercial artist Charlize Brakely (1898-196?), who employed pochoir (stencil coloring) techniques similar to those commonly seen in Parisian fashion illustration. The work was planned and published in London by book designer Frances Meynell (1891-1975) and composed in Monotype cochin typeface by the New York Monotype Composition Company, with letterpress elements printed by Quinn & Boden Company. Meynell and Nonesuch press were known for using a small hand press (an Albion Press) in the design process and mechanical printing techniques in the production process to create books that emulated the quality of hand press publications.  
De Maupassant’s work depicted the stratification of human experience across class divides in French society and portrayed the constraints of gender roles in the 19th century with sensitivity and depth. Though A Woman’s Life centers around the personal tragedies and mounting dissatisfactions of Jeanne (an upper-class heiress) it is balanced by characters like Rosalie, a single mother from the working-class peasantry whose own background and perspective on Jeanne’s privilege complicate a purely sympathetic view of her story.

Storied Leaves: Unveiling the Library's Rare Art Book Collection
Visit Minneapolis Central Library to see Storied Leaves: Unveiling the Library’s Rare Art Book Collection! The exhibit, located in Cargill Gallery, features over 80 titles from our rare art folio collection and includes some really stunning prints of art from all over the world! There’s also some library/collection history, explanations of printing techniques, and more. The exhibit runs October 4 – November 29, 2023.
Travel through time and across the globe as you explore the library's rare Art Book Collection. This vibrant exhibit showcases art from six continents—Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania—spanning ancient to contemporary times. Produced between 1850 and 1950, the works in this exhibit are leaves from folios, or individual pages contained within portfolios. Most have been carefully hand-printed, stenciled or hand-colored. Delve into the stories of these unique prints to learn how this remarkable collection came to be at Minneapolis Central Library, gain insights into the art and craft of printing, and be inspired to connect with art at your library. This exhibit is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

It's Fine Press Friday!
Today we’re taking a closer look at our sister set of editions from Trianon Press: William Blake's Illustrations of the book of Job : the engravings and related material and Colour versions of William Blake's Book of Job designs, both of which were published in 1987 in London by the William Blake Trust.  
The former edition includes two volumes of original black and white illustrations and facsimiles, process prints which document the evolution of the final product, and essays. It was edited by David Bindman (b. 1940) and includes plate-by-plate commentary and an introduction by Bo Lindberg (1937-2021), whose Ph.D. thesis on the work was published in 1973.   
The latter includes three sets of color plates- The New Zealand set, The Collins set, and the Fitzwilliam plates- all of which were reproduced in facsimile from the original engravings, which were published in 1826. The New Zealand set are finished watercolor drawings, while the Collins and Fitzwilliams sets are hand-colored collotype reproductions (using the pochoir method) of the published engravings. All told the set includes 22 fascicules containing the title page and accompanying texts and 46 plates of illustrations measuring from 40-41 cm., all housed in marbled portfolios nested in leather-bound slipcases.
