Now that whumptober is pretty much upon us I'm beginning to have doubts about a lot of my submissions 😭. I really struggled coming up with ideas for quite a few of the prompts. I know you encouraged us to think outside of the box and not necessarily take things too literally, but I'm concerned a few of mine might a bit of a stretch.

Nonnie, the only one judging your work is you. Go easy on yourself, ok? ♥️

We just want people to have fun. Please don't stress about whether your work is good enough or meets some kind of standard. No one's going to disqualify you (what would that even look like? We're not gatekeeping posting on any platform).

For everyone who is stressing in any way about this: take a breath. Remember why you like creating whump. And hold on to that.

We have no minimum requirements. You can post headcanon and plotbunnies. You can stretch the prompts to meet your setting and characters. You can use alt prompts. You can just use the prompt as the story/gifset title. You can reference past whump and focus on present comfort. You can focus on emotions and not anything physical. You can do anything!

Are you not able to do all 31? It's ok, me neither. Are you not sure it's whumpy enough? Who cares, no one is checking.

Everyone try to take a breath, relax, and if you have time this October, whump a character. If you don't have time to create, enjoy the wave of whump coming your way. 🎃

1: How many works do you have on AO3?

178 fics, since this is a fic writer meme.

2: What's your total AO3 wordcount?

1,193,590, with the caveat that that includes a collab fic of 190,409 words of which I was primarily writing only one of three POV characters. (And also one other shorter collab and the minimal amount of words required to describe the podfic/fanmixes.)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Mostly Shadowhunters (TV) atm, a lot of BioWare Games (especially Dragon Age 2) and then a truly random smattering of smaller games and tiny!fandom prompts back when askbox games were more common here plus Yuletide/Fic Exchange Matches On Unexpected Things. (I think I've broken 20 fandoms on AO3, depending on how one counts the various DA sub-fandoms.)

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

These are all Shadowhunters and Malec fics. The first three are complete, the last two are WIPs.

Parabatai Feels & Magic Lore! I wrote this for a Season 3B countdown event, and it's Magnus Being A Nerd and trying to figure out how this parabatai thing works. I snuck Jace and Michael Wayland feels in there kind of sideways too. I do think it's one of the most self-indulgent things I've ever written (epistolary! melancholy comfort! No Plot!) with many thanks to @rutherinahobbit because she helped me land the ending.

So I killed Alec off-screen right before the fic starts, and proceeded to keep poor Magnus very upset about it for the following 22k words. (It gets better! I promise! No one stays dead!) I got many angry and wailing comments, I have never been so proud. (This one suffered from very dramatic scope creep while I was trying to write it, which amused tumblr a lot, and this time I have to thank @poemsfromthealley for helping to make it work. And also the blurb, because I just could not figure out how to post it for ages.)

Epistolary!Fluff Fic that was supposed to be a bit of a missed connection thing for @pameluke but Alec instead proposed to Magnus on first sight and I just kind of went with that instead. /I am not in charge of the voices in my head

It is the first fic I ever had really break containment and get a lot of engagement/comments/subs/etc. It has been out-kudosed now, obviously as it's #4 on this list, but that's only because I killed the momentum and never finished it. 😅😅😅 ISTFG I am going to finish it some day though!

From a soulmates/massage combined prompt meme thing ALSO for @pameluke. I got stuck on this one largely because I had three different prequel/s1 retellings in my head at the same time and I kind of tangled them all up too much to get any of them done. I will eventually figure this one out too, but I may have to finish one of the other things to sort of clean my brain out, and I haven't managed that either.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

In theory? I got hung up on a comment from an FTH bidder the year I failed to finish my FTH fic, and didn't want to reply to their comment 'til I wrote their fic?

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

so about uh... five years ago? there was a really popular gifset format from an Elizabeth Hewer poem called in one timeline and I haven't the faintest idea how to gifset so I wrote a fic for Malec instead. [ao3]

I have written other things which Have Angst, but for me I tend to ease the ending... this is one of the few where I didn't.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Everything Else! (Almost)

I think, as an exercise in the true form of Happily Ever After, I'd have to go with Fine Feathers, which is an epilogue to a Georgette Heyer Regency Romance novel I did for Yuletide 2016.

8. Do you get hate on your fic?

Not usually. I don't even get people yelling at me to update on my WIPs, which may be hateful but isn't the same thing 😅

/and I'm certainly not complaining about either of these things, but I wish I knew how I avoided The Discourse™️so I could do it on purpose

9. Do you write smut?

I used to pretty regularly. I was even known as a smut!fic writer when Dragon Age Fandom and I were mutually more active together. Not so much (on either the writing quantity or the requests for more smut) for Shadowhunters.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Mostly no? I did two very short ficlets for Bingo Squares. I do still believe that Leverage is the Fix-It Fandom that fits everywhere and thus only kind-of counts as a crossover, plus I wrote a Shadowhunters / Inception bit with Ariadne as a Warlock.

I do also enjoy a good fusion fic, aka using a different canon as an AU setting, rather than combining characters from two settings.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware of? I've seen it happen to co-authors though, and other friends

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! I am still stunned and amazed and delighted by this!

Batty_Blue translated several of my Shadowhunters fics into Russian:

And Pomyluna translated 'First Choice' into Polish

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

Yes!

Only once successfully (aka one and done and finished and posted), and that was entirely thanks to my co-author Raph. 😅 (Against All Odds for @galedekarios back when I knew her as Chignon on an actual forum prior to tumblr. She's who got me onto tumblr, so if you met me here? That's her fault. 🥰)

I have started things with people a few times that never got posted, and there's a massive Mass Effect retelling on potentially permanent hiatus, though all three of us do hold out hope that someday our lives will align again. (Persephone Rising)

14. What‘s your all-time favourite ship?

Me & Sleep

(Sorry, can't do it, can't choose. Beware My Armada. With a couple ancient ship leviathans which can raise themselves from the deep with the slightest provocation.)

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Every thing I have ever posted (except for 12 Moons) is something that I do in fact hold out hope I will eventually finish.

Things I have not started posting are too numerous to count and/or list. Sometimes they come back. Sometimes they are fertilizer for other things that will be written later.

16. What’s your writing strengths?

Dialogue and hopeful melancholy? I get a lot of compliments on emotion/mood, and I do feel like I am usually pleased with the, idk, vibes of most of what I write.

17. What’s your writing weaknesses?

Plot & structure! What is? How do? What do you mean I have to have things happen rather than just reacting all the time?!?

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I have done it with mixed success and there are definitely ways to do it more accessibly than I did. It can add a lot, but you do have to think about the execution.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Uh. I think Lois & Clark back when I was a teen!jilly. Either that or Sailormoon when I was a slightly older teen!jilly?

In terms of posting in public, it was Bioware something, either Mass Effect or Dragon Age: Origins back around when Thing 2 was born. And he's 14 now, so... 😅

Orion's Belt, I think? I didn't originally post it on AO3, and then I deleted myself off the internet for awhile, and then I re-uploaded everything, and I'm bad at time in the best of circumstances, which that clearly was not, so it might not have been that one specifically but it was close.

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

I CAN'T CHOSE JUST ONE WTF

As a formative event/process, I have a certain enduring fondness for Lost for Words, which was like the first fic I really wrote while in fandom... I was social about it and posted while I was writing and finished (eventually) and it is still the longest single story I have ever written. (Tho I am for you will beat it out when I finish that.)

It's not particuarly good from the perspective of who I am as a writer some dozen years later, but it's sincerely meant cotton candy, at least. 🤣

Hello and welcome to my gifset blog!! I have a couple of important messages for this one which contain some rules for interaction:

• First and final warning guys! Don't tag my stuff with any type of Cleon tags please! Someone just did and the ship makes me very uncomfortable! I don't like blocking people because of this kind of thing but I have and will do so if you refuse to listen to me. It's the one and only boundary I have for now when it comes to my gifs, please respect that!

• Q. Can I make use of your gifs?

A. As long as you use them in things that wouldn't be uncomfortable for me to see, I've had people use them on like hard-core smut fics before and because tumblr sends me a notification every time someone uses them I have to see that shit 😭 Another thing I wouldn't recommend is using or reblogging my sets to negatively comment ON the set or game I made a set about in the first place. You can easily just scroll or make your own post for that instead of being disrespectful in my tags like I've had recently experienced. Aside from the aforementioned points you're good to go! I don't mind at all and I actually appreciate being asked for once! No-ones actually asked me before lol

If you have a negative opinion on a positive post please don't reblog my gifsets bashing the positive its based on. I.E if I make a post tagged with a certain ships tag don't reblog that set with something like EWW THAT SHIP SUCKS. Make your own post.

I use many tags to get around so if you have a specific ship, dynamic or thing you're looking for, follow one of the following:

sighs... writing... sighs... wouldn't it be nice... sighs. jokes aside, i visited the graveyard that are my drafts and i found a couple of ideas for dalton. none of them include the actual road house (can you blame me for preferring safe and comfy beds to unsanitary bars that aren't even safe enough to give you enough time to take your pants off before there's another fight? maybe. oh well.). i am praying to the gods of fanfiction that i get to write something that takes place in the road house he works at. in the meantime, i hope you'll enjoy the quick quickie i will be posting soon!!! either later today or tomorrow, it depends if i post a new gifset or not! i went all in with the trailer, i have like 3 more gifsets to share! 😂 but the fic is fresh out of the oven! i’m excited for you to read it!

Hi there! I just want to make sure you know that I am not the same creator of that gifset, but I can definitely explain how this person made that gifset.

This is the Natasha gifset, as you can see it’s gorgeous.

Before I begin I want to start by saying it’s totally fine to take inspiration from other gifs, to see something that someone has done and replicate it in your own way. With giffing, at the end of the day, we’re all using the same source material, the same amount of scenes and minutes of screen time to create something so there are going to be similarities in gifs across the same fandom. However, it is never okay to steal someone’s gifs and repost them as your own, nor is it okay to directly and blatantly copy someone’s gifset frame for frame to post even if you make the gifs yourself. Copying to learn a technique is fine so long as that gifset stays in your drafts or stays in your groupchat.

It is always a good idea to give credit where credit is due when giffing, in that if you use a text post/tweet/a specific set of graphics or theme, to credit the person you got the idea from by linking back to where you got it.

I’m assuming you’re asking specifically about the third gif. The process is going to be similar to the one I detailed here, however the gif on the left has either a grayscale or black and white filter on it, or you can even open a Hue/Sat layer and take out as much saturation as you want. It all depends on the look you’re going for!

The gif on the right has cyan added to it, whether they did that with a brush or layers idk and I’m not going to try to recreate it exactly, so if you want to know for sure I recommend asking them. But I can show you a similar process with Photopea, which is what I’m assuming you’re wanting (although to be completely honest I primarily use Photoshop now😂😭)/

Lately in my own gifs I’ve been doing blend types other than Lighten (like Screen for example), and this kind of looks like that but I could be wrong! Again, it all just depends on what kind of look you want, the vibe or aesthetic you’re going for.

The tutorial I make for you will use Lucas from Stranger Things S4 because that is the only live action on my hard drive at the moment😂😭 I mainly gif anime now (anime sideblog: @icythot-bakubitch) and I could absolutely do a tutorial with it but it won’t come out the same as what you’re wanting to see.

This tutorial is made on the basis that you already know 1) how to make a gif 2) how to make overlays and 3) have a good sense of familiarity with photopea/photoshop.

If you don’t have those things, you’re welcome to look at my other tutorials:

Please remember that this gif is made with Photopea and not Photoshop, so there is going to be a deficit in quality compared to the set you’ve shown me. Your quality will come out much better if you’re able to use Photoshop.

Basically all I really did was add a Black and White layer to the bottom gif, making adjustments to keep as much quality as possible and adjusting the brightness to my taste. The original gif is already pretty dark, I probably should have picked something else but for a tutorial I’m not that pressed.

On the top gif, I used Selective Color and Hue/Sat to change the cyan of his background to purple.

Using a soft round brush I cleaned up their faces and got rid of any parts of the background that I felt was too distracting.

Attached below is a side by side of the original and recolor respectively, and then a screenshot of my layers.

Again, this is my way of doing things. It’s going to look different from someone else’s. Focus on finding a style that you like and that works for you. Just because a style of giffing is popular or something a lot of people are doing doesn’t mean that you have to do that.

I’m sure there are better or more efficient ways of doing things as well! And there isn’t one set way of doing things, this is not a be all end all of doing overlays or giffing.

If you have questions regarding the Natasha set more specifically, I highly recommend asking the creator personally. All I’m doing is explaining the recoloring process when it comes to overlay gifs as it applies to Photopea.

I'm one of the "old bloggers" too, been around here for 15 years and just turned 30 last month 🥳 and you're right, could be the age why we dont understand the conceptual change 😭😂

I'm also pretty sure we both have the same idea of tumblr and how to use it respectfully and politely, so as to not make this ask even longer, I'll skip it if that's ok?

The thing is, some content creators I follow occasionally post rants and warnings about not wanting any opinions in the hashtags, comments, any text added to their gif sets, positive thoughts included. It's not that I've ever received a msg directly, but I do feel like I'm being yelled at too in those rants because I type things like "this is so gorgeous and I love that character so much" in the tags.

I definitely don't reblog as much as before and tbh don't even want to anymore. That, however, doesn't include your work, which I often reblog without thinking twice. So thank you, for everything you're doing here. Wishing you a nice week 🫶🏻🩷☀️🌺

Oh, I see what you mean now. I think I've said it in one of my asks, how much we love to read other people's thoughts and opinions (= you screaming about how much you love the character/person or show or scene or whatever in the gifset) on our gifsets/content. So please always reblog stuff and yell about how much you love it, it's the best thing to see :) I know some content creators don't like when people add stuff to their gifset in the comment section and not in the tags. So it changes the layout/style of the original post a bit. I don't mind if people add their thoughts in the comments section and it's defo no reason to send hate to other bloggers.

What I personally dislike tho is, when people reblog my gifset and add negative tags to it (like I fuckn hate this show, or the character sucks). Why reblog something you don't like, that makes no sense to me. That's actually the only reason I don't like people reblogging my gifs. Thankfully most of the reblogs I get are lovely and happy reblogs which makes me happy too :)

Anyway, I think I got what you mean and I think you also understand my points. Thanks for talking about this and clearing things up. I get why it's a bit discouraging for you to reblog stuff, no one wants to get hate and no one should get hate, ever. I do hope your Tumblr experience will get better and you can enjoy reblogging again.

I really, really enjoy your 'Chains of Heart' gifs because they show the incredible cinematography and aesthetics of the show so beautifully. Thank you for making these! And may I request this kind of gifset for ep. 6 after your hiatus ends?

Because I feel like they've outdone themselves with some of the shots in that episode! The scene with the wooden statues, the silhouettes of Payu and Din looking out of the window, Ken making a phone call in front of that stained glass window, DeeDee's basket of flowers, the shot with the cross at the end of the episode (!!?!?!) and so on. Truly awesome. 😍

Anyways. I'd love to see a gifset of your favourite, aesthetically pleasing shots from that episode. (Only if you're in the mood and have time for it after "your return" of course! :))

(And let me add some quick afterthoughts because there are so little people to talk about 'Chains of Heart' with and I just read your review of the episode: I also think that Lue's dream was one of the best scenes of the show so far. Maybe even THE best scene. Boom's acting was heartbreakingly beautiful, right? And the fact that they used this as a COLD OPEN! Can't believe I had to pause and breathe for a second before we even had reached the opening credits! 🙈😭

You said that the most disturbing scene for you was the one-eyed man dancing (with the woman). You know what? I think that might have been a Quentin Tarantino reference. There's a very famous and unsettling torture/dancing scene in 'Reservoir Dogs' and it was the first thing that popped into my mind while watching this. Just as a random fun fact. :) But you know what I really liked about that scene? The fact that the mask of our "Joker" slipped for a second and we got a glimpse of the real emotion and fear hidden beneath that crazy laugh and constructed "nothing can touch me"-persona. 👀

Anyways. Can't wait for the next episode - the bed scene in the teaser looked like a lot of fun. 🤭

I am back from my hiatus and I had a very pleasant time 🥰

And of course the first thing I do after coming back are gifsets for Chains of Heart 😊 The cinematography is just too beautiful! I couldn't resist! You can find the one for episode 6 here 🌸 Thank you for the request! I don't like DeeDee that much, so he won't come up that often in my sets 🙈 But the flowers were beautiful.

I never thought of Reservoir Dogs or Quentin Tarantino in general, but now I can't unsee it! That is brilliant! Perhaps tat is one of the reasons I like this series taht much, I enjoy Tarantino's movies very much.

The series might not be in the top spot right now, because of all the stupidly good KBLs, but I still enjoy and love it! I just hope Ken and Din/Lue can have a reunion before the last episode...They suffered enough.

ceecee NO warning at all before putting that creddie gifset on my dash?? 😭 please take some accountability for the way i just spent the last few hours binging the show and realizing that the icarly reboot is FEEDING the creddie crops my adolescent self had planted and had thought were long dead? I can't believe this is the way I am realizing this! I am in shambles! Like. GOD there's just something so personal to me about freddie who has constantly been in relationships with women in his life who have walked all over him and hurt him, now actually really FINALLY being endgame with the one girl he's loved from when they were KIDS, who also happens to be the one girl who has always been kind to him 😭 shambles, ceecee! but also, listen!! my absolute favorite thing about how they're handling this is how they've shown both of them have grown and are working on having a healthy friendship — they've both acknowledged that their relationship as children was, at best, Imbalanced, but now both of them are like. they have so much life experience under their belts and so many years of actual, genuine close friendship that it just. it MAKES SENSE now and it!! it makes me so happy actually

because, like. ok. icarly on nickelodeon was not meant to be taken seriously, obviously. but the fact that these new writers acknowledge that the people watching this reboot are probably the people who are grown up now as well, and that if they want to write a compelling, more mature show, they're gonna have to acknowledge some of the weird, stupid shit That One Man made canon in the original and, like. CORRECT IT. and they do. they bring it up and fix it without once losing its charm and energy

so like!! now they're written as two adults, best friends, who know each other inside and out and have so much love for each other and have been through so much with each other so of course it makes sense and wow i really just. wrote that many words about the icarly reboot huh lmfao i'm a mess this is so embarrassing

Peace and quiet and sweetness, just pure domestic bliss. Bc that’s all I want for them, and your fic was just so freaking lovely and brilliant and gave us all of that and more.
