Happy Plastic Free July! This rainy day is a good time to start to highlighting my favorite plastic free swaps. • For morning coffee, I buy local beans in paper or foil bags when I can. Sometimes if the bags are lined in plastic, I reuse them for bulk items. I wish I could buy bulk beans in my own bag! Hopefully one day! I have a burr grinder to grind beans at home. I use a metal container to store the extra ground coffee. I use a pour over method to make my coffee. I boil my water in a pot on the stove, use a washable unbleached cotton coffee filter in a @martinathornhill ceramic pour-over to pour directly into my cup or a repurposed glass jar or more often both. I love my pour-over devise bc I can make up to 4 cups of coffee depending on the amount of beans I use. If I don’t drink all 4 cups I save the rest for the next day and reheat in the same pot. This method is an easy way to make iced coffee, too. Just pop the jar in the fridge to drink later. My spent grinds go right in the compost or get used in houseplants and blueberry bushes for the nitrogen it contains, which helps them grow healthy leaves and stems! • How do you make your coffee in the morning? Can you think of how to reduce the waste (plastic or otherwise) in this process? #plasticfreejuly #plasticfreetip #beachlife #beachtown #morningroutine #coffeeroutine #plasticfreecoffee #zerowaste #zerowastenj #reuserecycle #localcoffee https://www.instagram.com/p/BzlkqM1HfM3/?igshid=1g86sh954hwkr

I made it to Oahu and was excited to explore the white sand beaches I heard so much about. I stepped onto the sand and looked down at the ground and saw miles of small tiny plastics poking out; no exaggeration. I couldn’t even find a place to sit that wasn’t covered in micro plastics. 🌊🌊🌊 I am sad. I feel for these oceans and hear their call for help. I spoke to some surfers who said, this was a “good” day compared to what is normally covering this beach. Beach clean-ups are amazing but all of us can help too by choosing reusables. 🌊🌊🌊 Say no to plastic when you are out eating. Bring your reusables with you. Don’t have any? Message me I’d love to help you! • • • • • • #beachcleanup #plasticistherealkiller #5minutebeachcleanup #sustainablestyle #zerowasteliving #takethreeforthesea #microplastics #saveourseas #sustainablyaimee #instagramvsreality #plasticfreehawaii #plasticfreeliving #ecofriendlytips #plasticfreetips #ecowarrior #earthlove #setanexample #beachystyle #raiseawareness #kokuahawaiifoundation #breakfreefromplastic #hawaiibeach (at Kailua Beach - Oahu, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtM8V3ShvNw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=hh81bol6ngqi

GOING PLASTIC-FREE AT HOME: In some areas, curbside ♻️recycling will accept metal clothes hangers. Unfortunately, most recycling centers are not prepared to handle the pointy edges of the hanger that can easily damage their sorting machines. Before placing any metal clothes hangers in your recycling bin, please confirm that your program accepts them. . Keep in mind, plastic and wooden hangers are much less likely to be accepted in your curbside bin. . Just because your local recycling program accepts “scrap metal” or “all plastic,” think twice before just dropping those clothes 👗👕👚 hangers into your bin. . Double check with your recycling services to make sure they can handle them otherwise your entire recycling bin may be dumped into the trash pile. 🏹THE STATS: ❗Only 15% of the 8-10 billion plastic coat hangers produced each year are recycled. ❗The remaining 85% usually end up in landfills. ❗Most plastic hangers are made of #6 plastic (polystyrene) or #7 plastic (polycarbonate). ❗Once they’re in the landfill grave, they’ll take upwards of 1,000 years to breakdown. ❗Break down means leaching toxic chemicals like Benzene and BPA into the soil. 🤒☠️ . I’m with you all the way @hookaway4crochet with @get_repost ・・・ “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it” Robert Swan - Shall we do something about it? Which ones do you do? Number 6 is the hardest for me, it’s so difficult to buy what you need without plastic wrapping - especially since most of our food comes wrapped in some sort of plastic. 😞 I’m fairly stuck as I can’t drive for medical reasons and so get shopping delivered, ideally on a ‘green delivery’ so have no say on what bags they do and don’t put my food in. At least I can opt for no shopping bags 😁 . . #plasticfree #plasticswap #plasticfreelife #plasticfreetips #saveouroceans #saveourplanet #ditchtheplastic — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2LW3ODn

Easy tip to avoid plastic wrap! Keep food fresh (in the fridge) by putting a saucer or plate on top of a bowl. Also works great with two deep dinner plates. 🍲🍜🍝 Perfect for stacking left-over food in the fridge! 😉👌 #plasticfreetuesday #plasticfreejuly #noplasticewrap #refusereducereuse #plasticfreetip #foodstorage #dontfeedtheplasticmonster
