Advantages and disadvantages of various rubber materials

(NaturalRubber) is made from latex collected from the rubber tree, which is a polymer of isoprene. Has good wear resistance, high elasticity, breaking strength, and elongation. It is easy to age in the air, becomes sticky when heated, expands and dissolves easily in mineral oil or gasoline, and is resistant to alkali but not strong acid.

Advantages: good elasticity, acid, and alkali resistance.

Disadvantages: Not weather-resistant, not oil-resistant (vegetable oil-resistant), it is the raw material for making tapes, hoses, and rubber shoes, and is suitable for making shock-absorbing parts, products used in automobiles brake fluid, ethanol, and other liquids with hydroxide radicals.

Styrene Butadiene Rubber SBR

(StyreneButadieneCopolymer) The copolymer of butadiene and styrene, compared with natural rubber, has uniform quality, less foreign matter, better wear resistance and aging resistance, but weaker mechanical strength, can be blended with natural rubber.

Advantages: low-cost non-oil-resistant material, good water resistance, good elasticity below 70 hardness, poor compressibility at high hardness.

Disadvantages: Strong acids, ozone, oils, oil esters and fats, and most hydrocarbons are not recommended. Widely used in the tire industry, shoe industry, cloth industry, and conveyor belt industry.

Nitrile rubber NBR

(Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) Nitrile rubber is a polymer made of butadiene and acrylonitrile through emulsion copolymerization. It is a synthetic rubber with good oil resistance (especially alkane oil) and good aging resistance. There are five kinds of acrylonitrile content (%) in nitrile rubber, such as 42-46, 36-41, 31-35, 25-30, and 18-24. The higher the acrylonitrile content, the better the oil resistance, but the corresponding decrease in the cold resistance. It can be used in the air at 120℃ or in oil at 150℃ for a long time.

Advantages: Impermeable to most common gases, good resistance to sunlight and odors, can be exposed to animal or vegetable oils or vaporizable chemicals.

Disadvantages: Not resistant to ozone and aromatic, halogenated hydrocarbons, ketones, and ester solvents, not suitable for insulating materials.

Hydrogenated nitrile rubber HNBR

(HydrogenateNitrile) Hydrogenated nitrile rubber is a kind of nitrile rubber that has been hydrogenated to remove part of the double chain. After hydrogenation, its temperature resistance and weather resistance are much higher than that of general nitrile rubber, and its oil resistance is similar to that of general nitrile rubber. The general operating temperature range is minus 25-150 ℃.

Advantages: It has better abrasion resistance than nitrile rubber, and has excellent corrosion resistance, tensile strength, tear resistance, and compression properties. It has good resistance under atmospheric conditions such as ozone and is generally used in laundry or dishwashing detergents.

Disadvantages: It is not recommended to be used in the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry in alcohol, ester, or aromatic solutions. It is widely used in environmental protection refrigerants, seals in R134a systems, and seals in automotive engine systems.

Ethylene propylene rubber EPDM

Ethylene propylene rubber EPDM (Ethylenepropylene Rubber) is made of ethylene and propylene copolymer, so it has excellent heat resistance, aging resistance, ozone resistance, and stability, but it cannot be sulfurized. In order to solve this problem, a small amount of the third component with double chains is introduced into the main chain of EP and sulfur can be added to form EPDM. Generally, the temperature is minus 50-150℃. Excellent resistance to polar solvents such as alcohols, ketones, etc.
