I really want to talk about Paulina/Danny right now.

I'm listening to Let You Break My Heart Again by Laufey after reading a few fics for the two, and it is making me think. I really want to write a fic where Paulina slowly realizes through her forced time with Danny throughout the series had made her actually not dislike Danny.

She starts to see him as an actual person who isn't some loser. She sees how Sam and Val like Danny and starts to think how Danny, a total loser, managed to get an ex-A Lister and a albeit an outcast rich kid to like him. Paulina doesn't seem to be the type to actually give dudes a real chance, only stringing them along for her amusement because they won't leave her alone. So her actually starting to realize she wants to get to know Danny and feel remorse for her trying to use him against Sam rattles her to the core.

Because why did she even think dating Danny was a good idea back then? She could have just went on dates with him. The overshadowing doesn't count in her eyes, but the rest of it does. Why didn't she just string him along for a few dates and drop him? These questions rattle around in her brain as she realized that maybe, on some small level she didn't realize existed, the thought of actually dating someone who was interesting and different didn't make her feel like nails on a chalkboard.

I just also want to write a fic where Paulina isn't a two dimensional girl and actually has a personality other than pretty popular girl. I've done it with Star for the most part, so Paulina is next on my list.

“Paulina. I’m serious. You need to stay here,” Danny said for the thousandth time. 

Her doe eyes pleaded, sparkling with the infatuation for her beloved hero. 

“But Dannyyyyyy,” she complained. “How else am I supposed to get new pictures of you for the blog? It’s helped so much with your approval rating.”

This wasn’t untrue. Since they’d started dating, and since Danny had shared his secret with Paulina, she’d taken on the task of being his PR agent. He admired her determination to shift public opinion of Phantom, and was surprised that it was so effective. 

They’d done this dance before, though. Paulina begging to follow Danny to a fight, and him begging her to stay behind. He couldn’t put her in danger like that; it went against everything he believed in. Yet she still managed to wear him down each and every time. 

Not today though. 

He moved in closer to her, grabbing her arms. “Listen. I appreciate you and everything you’ve done for me. But this fight isn’t going to be pretty, and I don’t need you near that. I promise - the blog will be okay. I just need you to be.”

She gave him bigger puppy-dog eyes in response. He felt his resolve melting away, but he had to stick to his gut. 

“Paulina…,” he warned.

His girlfriend dropped the act with a defeated sigh. “Fine. Can I at least fly with you there? I promise I’ll leave.”

Danny raised his eyebrows. “You promise?” She nodded quickly. 

He considered the compromise. “I’ll drop you off outside of the affected area. That’s it.”

This seemed to please her enough. She threw her arms around his shoulders and pecked his cheek. Danny looped an arm under her legs and they were off, towards the docks. 

It was a clear night - the moon and stars shone bright down onto Amity Park. It was sometimes off putting for Danny to fly towards a fight when the journey was so peaceful. Nothing compared to the quiet solitude of being so high. Of course, this time he held Paulina, and he shifted his attention to her, amused at the dreamy look on her face. 

“I love this,” she said breathlessly. 

“Yeah. Me too.”

He spotted a spot to briefly land and slowly let Paulina onto her feet. Fear and concern were written on her face, but this was nothing new. 

“It’s gonna be fine. How many times have I done this?” Danny said, trying to lighten the mood. 

Paulina stared at the ground. “I know. I just never know when…it’s not gonna be fine.”

“Hey. I’ll see you at home. I swear.” He held out his pinkie, which Paulina only stared at. 

“A pinkie promise isn’t gonna keep you safe,” she finally said.

He flashed his signature troublesome grin. “But it won’t hurt.” 

She finally locked their fingers together. Danny tried to pull away, but she held tight. 

“You’d better come visit me later, ghost boy.”

“I promise.”

"Alright!" Paulina slams her hands on the table, making Tucker and Sam jump in surprise.

"I'm throwing Danny a surprise Christmas party, I'll need your help."

For a beat there is complete silence before Tucker cautiously starts.

"Y'know Danny…hates Christmas, right?"

"Yeah! But only because his crazy parents make it so miserable for him, so I'm gonna give him the perfect Christmas." Paulina trills.

"You two meet me at the gym after school, I have a plan."

And that's how Tucker and Sam got roped into helping with the disaster on December 21'st.

Pissed off Paulina: the whole killing Danny mess happened because you were jealous I wanted him to come to my quinceañera party!

Sam equally pissed off but is so out of her league when it comes to Paulina's anger: He promised to hang out with me!

Paulina even more angry: He hangs out with you all the time! He's allowed to have a life outside of you! I can't believe you killed him on purpose!

Tucker being a little shit: Technically she killed him twice. Sams the reason Danny died the first time.

The setting sun turned into a rich orange haze, lighting up the sky for the sun’s last huzzah before night took over. Paulina watched as Phantom swooped down to the ground and gently let Dash go. Her boyfriend’s golden hair looked like fire in the sun's setting rays, and she loved to run her fingers through it. But if Dash was like Apollo the Phantom was Hades himself with his hair and skin glowing on their own. The soft white light that constantly radiated off the ghost boy was not only a reminder that he was not of this world, but that nothing in this world could compete with his ghostly beauty. 

Paulina moved closer, her body was hidden in the alley’s dark shadow. There was a ghost attack at Amity mall today. Some ghost with a bike ripped through the mall’s stores, his girl stealing everything she could grab. Dash tried to play hero, and failed. He had to be rescued by Phantom. 

“Typical,” she scowled. Dash was getting saved by Phantom a lot lately. He had started throwing himself at every ghost he saw. It was ridiculous. Dash was always the jealous type, but everybody knew he wasn’t the hero type, so why even try? Paulina scoffed to herself. It wasn’t making her like him any more than she did and it prevented her from approaching Phantom. Maybe that was his plan. Dick. 

“Dash, I know you want to help the town but you can’t keep putting yourself in danger. One day I won’t be there to save you,” Phantom said. 

“But I don’t know how else to see you,” Dash said. 

“What?” Phantom said. He looked confused and Paulina agreed. What was going on? 

“Truthfully, uhh I’m not fighting Ghost to save anyone. I just want a chance to see you again.”

“Me? Oh well you can always see me flying around town.” 

“That’s not what I mean, and you know it. I - Um wait. “

“Dash are you alright?” 

“Yes, no. I just. I’ve never felt this way about another dude before.”

“But I thought you were dating Paulina?” Phantom asked. Paulina slammed her mouth shut. He knew her name. 

“Paulina and I are only dating because everyone expects us to date. I don’t actually feel that way towards her, and she doesn't like me that way either. We’re just using each other to stay popular.” Dash said. And Paulina couldn’t disagree. “But then I met you for the first time, and it's not like being with Paulina. It makes me feel funny and strange, but wonderful, and sometimes it hurts.” 

“Dash..” 

“Worst of all. I don’t know if it's a phase or not. But I want to find out.” 

Phantom was silent, his mouth gaping like a fish out of water. “Does anyone know?” 

“No. But I don't care if they do, cause I’ll show them why I won the state wrestling championship last year.” 

“Um… good to know,” Phantom’s face was blushing? Where red would appear was now a light green, but he didn’t look sick. 

“Look this is new to me too, so you don’t have to say anything, just here take this,” Dash held out something to Phantom. “It’s tickets to the boxing match Friday, at the Ravens stadium. Some YouTuber is gonna box Lance McFist. He’s a  three time world boxing champion. I’ll be waiting outside for you okay! I’ll see you then Ghost boy!” Dash spun on his heels and bolted down the street. His face matched the setting sky. 

Paulina collected her jaw off the ground. Her eyes fixed to the spot where Dash was, slowly grinded against her eyelids to Phantom. Who, while very embarrassed was not disgusted? His bright eyes were soft and a smile was drawn upon his face. He looked at the ticket again, and muttered so softly that she could barely make out the words, 

“I guess I have a date this Friday.” 

Paulina wanted to scream. She had lost a war she didn’t even know she was fighting, to her boyfriend. Life couldn’t get any worse. She hung her head low and wandered through the streets of Amity Park, finding her way back to her home. She collapsed into her pink princess bed and fell asleep dreaming of better days.
