Puis, ponctuellement, les Rois y enfermèrent des prisonniers, mais c’est sous Louis XIV qu’elle devint officiellement une Prison d’Etat… Un certain masque de fer y trouva la mort! Au long de son existence, cette bâtisse fut plusieurs fois prise d’assaut, mais son heure de fin avait sonné, lorsque des révolutionnaires vinrent y récupérer les armes un certain 14 juillet, y mettant le feu, laissant des milliers d’archives partir en fumée.
