Last Monday of the Week 2023-10-02

Lots of neat new things out this week

Listening: New release from We Kill Cowboys, well, not new because they've been playing it live for a year but they mostly run in Cape Town so I didn't get to hear them even when I didn't live a continent away.

Also, finished COUNTER/weight from Friends at the Table. I think I have figured out one of the things I like about Friends at the Table, which is that they behave like a real world Darths and Droids table. They move between a lot of systems and they regularly have players playing at very different scales, often someone plays multiple characters, it's an interesting mix of very, very old fashioned TTRPG techniques with some very new styles of games.

The other way it's like Darths and Droids is that they have patently absurd names (Territory Jazz, Lazer Ted, Territory Jazz Junior!) and also have a really solid mix of detailed character driven storytelling and extremely silly comedy. Mako really bought all those robots in like episode 3 and deployed them in the final fight. Legendary.

Gonna give it a moment before I move on to Marielda but man. What a good show.

Reading: Digging through some 1999 weblog posts about contemporary server technologies in an abortive attempt at a computer history blogpost. Unfortunately turned out to not be very interesting beyond what can be easily found already.

I did finally track down where a furry writer I read pretty heavily in high school moved to when his website disappeared so that's like a ten year mystery that didn't need solving but damn if it didn't just get solved.

Watching: Movie night once again canned. Idly browsing random comedies on Mosfilm but not really grabbed by anything.

Oh. Conspiracy has a new 64k realtime demo out. I still preferred their 2021 entry but the particle effects here are very impressive, especially for a realtime.

Making: Prototype knife block prints, also picked up someone's scrapped undergrad quadcopter project cheap for parts so I am interested to dig into that.

Playing: Almost done with Breath of the Wild, beat the last Divine Beast (Medoh) and now just have to wrap up.

I was originally planning to finish "Every Main Quest" before hitting the castle but a) one of those requires basically going to the castle, b) the game suddenly spat out an "EX" quest where you do some weird fights on the plateau which I have now learned means it's a DLC thing. I will finish the first one and see how I feel but it's the first in a whole long-ass chain of themed quests that I probably don't care about.

I was also planning on doing the trial of the sword but I really do not enjoy replaying all those levels any time I die. Boring. Not doing it. I'll probably get through that soon.

In other news, new Twinbeard game: Gordy and the Monster Moon, adventure PICO-8 game from Jim Stormdancer. Cute little thing! I had a great time. Legend of Zelda-esque runaround story. You can really tell Jim has a kid these days.

Tools and Equipment: If you like me are trying to consolidate on USB-C for simplicity but you still have a pile of micro-USB devboards and also a watch charger and game controller, these tiny USB-C to Micro-B adapters are handy to just leave plugged in wherever needed.

I think it's great! I eat vegan occasionally as many of my friends are vegan. There's a lot more options these days, but you do have to be mindful of your protein and nutrient intake. And remember that your personal eating decisions are yours, not anyone else's -- this goes for all food-related things.

Yes, but it's a really sad Gatorade with the twisty top from like 2021. Don't judge me.

I go out pretty frequently, and you can never go wrong with a low cut black top and tight flare jeans. I have men eating out of my hand all night, and it makes me feel very powerful.

It was late 2021 and some local conventions had just opened back up. This was during the first huge wave of popularity and I was fucking living for it so I did a lil BF cosplay and my girlfriend at the time of course cosplayed GF with me :))

We were like 16 or 17ish back then and of course we did the responsible thing: Skip school for the entire day and not tell our parents we were traveling an hour away to the largest city in the state to go to a fucking anime convention.

The con itself was actually super fun??? Our cosplays weren't like top tier (again keep in mind we were young we did this shit on a highschoolers budget). We met the fucking ninja turtles?????

Anyways though after the con we were super hungry and walking down the street to the parking garage and attempting to find a place to eat because our asses were STARVING.

This super tall older dude (like clearly balding, at least in his late thirties) got our attention as soon as we walked out of the convention center because he did the fucking pico rap at us all the way across the street but like??? With his voice?? (It did. Not sound good. He had to yell it because cars were passing and it just was not a thing you should do with your voice compared to calculator noises or some shit)

I kinda ignored the funny rapping and asked if he knew of any hotdog places nearby. I don't think I was rude or anything but he stopped making noises at us and just kinda hit us with this blank stare. We weren't really creeped out and just kept walking.

The parking garage was like half a mile away so we had a lot of walking to do. We noticed him behind us on the other side of the road a few times but again weren't really creeped out or anything (neither of us had been to a big city before, we had no idea what the hell to look out for).

Once we were like halfway there the street got kinda narrow and had less traffic. We heard someone running and when we turned around the guy was fucking booking it twords us. Thankfully we had enough common sense and survival instincts to realize we were about to get fucking snatched and started running like our asses were on fire. We hid in a coffee shop for like 20 minutes until we knew for sure he was gone.

The best part was me n my gf switched shoes as soon as we left the convention (she couldn't walk that well in heels but I could, we also wore the same size shoes so it just made sense to swap) so for a couple of blocks I was hauling ass in fucking stilettos.

We didn't see him again thankfully but we seen him on the news a year later after he got arrested for attempting (and thankfully failing) to kidnap some different cosplayers at the same damn convention.

Uhhh TLD;r Dumb teenager harnesses the Boyfriend kinnie energy and almost got kidnapped because he wanted to get some chili dogs

It is low like 2020/2021 George would have had 100k easy. English Twitch viewers have just disappeared after Covid. Dream on 76k is like crazy number for an English streamer if he’d stayed in like snf i bet he’d be going up every day. Still never like Hispanic streamer numbers but yeah English streamers just aren’t the hype they used to be. And I’m sure it’s because they fell off from consistent content but yeah

I mean, pandemic numbers were insane but obviously, everyone went down after it passed. I think a bit it has to do with consistency but also there's a lot of people who moved on and without the dsmp as an excuse there's no real reason why so much people would watch one stream. Like cmon, we always joke about Karl Jacobs lobbies but they were sick cause it was Something Exciting To Watch.

Because like, the biggest hispanic streamers pull 60k-100k often because there's always something going on, whether is an smp (karmaland, tortillaland, elitecraft) a short series (minecraft Extremo, Piratas, GTARP, Ark) an event (SquidCraft, La Velada, Juaniquilocopa, Mario Kart Tournament, Eslands) or just a dumb group game (Pico Park, Monopoly, Uno) and these things usually don't overlap, so people are less divided and they always have something to watch.

If only we could go back to jackbox and among us I bet they dtkq would pull 50k viewers consistently

Just watched The Magic Voyage review, and I made a few notes of my own:

-Diego made me think of a bootleg animated version of Wormtongue, but he doesn't figure into the plot enough for that

-"Fun" history fact: Ferdinand and Isabella, along with being the parents of Catherine of Aragon, were also second cousins

-I first became aware of this movie through the Nostalgia Critic, and one thing he complained about was (in his words) "all the noise, noise, NOISE!" so I'm glad that you touched on that and marked it as a sin

-It is creepy that Pico made THREE portraits of Marilyn in his room, right? Oh, and I'm sure the chandelier won't spark any traumatic memories for her, no sir

-Did they not even give Columbus three ships?

-Molten gold and boiling blood, interesting. I don't suppose you could share the punishments of other historical figures?

-I majored in graphic design in college, and one of the projects we did was an interactive poster about a topic we felt strongly about. One of my classmates focused her poster on how Columbus Day more or less sweeps his atrocities under the rug. I think she would approve of your review!

Pengu Survives Christmas

I've made an arcade highscore game based on Pengu Saves Christmas by STANNco on Newgrounds

This wasn't originally a Pengu game, it was actually an original minigame being made for the Neopets private server Neopets Classic. Titled "Jump Bruce", it had mostly the same gameplay and obstacles, just originally made using a Neopets skin.

The idea was for a pixel-art arcade game that would progressively get more difficult the longer you survived by adding more obstacles. I love those original score-based arcade games and I feel like it's a form of gameplay that a lot of these kids MMOs base their minigames on, so I thought it'd be fitting

These are some of the original assets. Pengu went on to replace Bruce, Quiggle was replaced by a piranha fish, and Pteri never got reskinned. Rather than having an enemy who flys through the sky, I settled on replacing Pteri with the seal from Pengu Saves Christmas, who now resides on the bottom platforms.

This brick got replaced with an icicle, and the fireball's sprite got remade and reused. The Brucicles would eventually become the varied Christmas treat pickups in Pengu Survives Christmas.

It's a real shame that none of these assets got put to proper use, because I'm fairly proud of how they came out. The game was actually near completion, but it unfortunately got canceled because the Neopets Classic developer that I had been in contact with decided to start ghosting me.

It was a nearly completed game that I thought had potential though, so I decided to reuse it for another now canceled project called the Newgrounds Bootleg Pack.

The idea of the Newgrounds Bootleg Pack was to make a Newgrounds themed minigame collection based on those bootleg NES game packs. Y'know, the ones that hilarious mistranslate and misname classic games, also sometimes containing some of the stankiest bootleg homebrew known to man such as "Angry Birds" or "Plants vs Zombies" NES roms. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look up some videos of them, they're hilariously terrible.

Anyways, Jump Bruce got reskinned to be "Fulp Hero", which was just a direct reskin of the game.

Rather than Bruce, you played as Tom Fulp's avatar and collected Beers

You'd avoid bullets shot at you by Pico

And dodge flying envelopes and Tom Fulp's cat, Sherbert. I kinda had a difficult time coming up with obstacles related to Tom Fulp and Newgrounds, but the strangeness of it fits with the bootleg theme in my opinion.

The Newgrounds Bootleg Pack was going to be released for April Fools 2022, but unfortunately wasn't finished in time. I might end up making a blog post dedicated to the bootleg pack itself just so I can share some of the minigames I made that never saw the light of day.

2 canceled remakes of my first released Newgrounds game Egg-Legs and 2 more canceled Christmas projects (that I cannot talk about right now because they might still be finished in the future) later, we've come to Pengu Survives Christmas. I really wanted to get something out for Christmas, and considering that Jump Bruce/Fulp Hero was already nearly finished, reskinning the game and releasing it for Christmas wouldn't be a very tall order.

Turns out I wasn't entirely right

The original code for Jump Bruce goes back as far as 2021, and dear lord I was a bum-ass programmer back then. A lot of the code was kinda buggy so I tried to fix it, but it was just so poorly made and shotty that attempts to fix it resulted in even more broken code. The organization and build of the project itself was so poorly organized that trying to navigate it to fix its issues was such a headache.

The jumping felt terrible and was such a pain to fix without rewriting it. My system for having platforms you can jump through the bottom of was just amateur, but the organization of the actual scene was so poor that I'd have to go through each and every physics object individually and fix each one. The platforms also weren't instances of one platform, but each an individual node. I'd have to fix each of the 5 platforms individually. Like what the fuck was I thinking when I originally made this.

Overall, I decided to simply remake it from the ground-up. I felt it'd be easier to make the game feel the way I wanted it to feel if I just remade it all rather than trying to sort through and fix my shotty work from over a year ago.

I don't know how entirely right I was to do this, if it really was faster and more efficient, but overall I'm proud of the product that I've made. In addition to remaking the original game (minus the flying enemy on the top of the level), I also added new obstacles in the form of the seal on the bottom platforms and the rising water. Overall, this version of the game feels and looks way better than any of the previous versions. It's also a much cleaner project which will make it easier to make additions to if I decided to update it in the future (which I'm already thinking of doing, as I'd love to implement a hard-mode and potentially more level layouts)

funniest shit ever to me how there was no pico day in 2020. because he was so unpopular and FORGOTTN at that point that they were thinking of just renaming it newgrounds day. and then that one level in that one game came out in december and pico day 2021 got the most submissions out of any year up to that point

Okay so P much, after Picos School Love Conquers All/2021 Picos School April Fools Day Hoax came out, was like at the beginning of my Pico phase. Because of this timing, the character lore/personalities revealed and the fact that I’m a sucker for good AUs, I grew attached to the game. Later on Ramen Noodiles Cassandra (or did that come out before LCA??..I don’t remember) became a hyperfixiation for me as well, and with the juicy lore mixed from both, I just started makin’ an AU!!!

It started out simply as first, just furrified Pico characters, but as time went on I started creating lore, developing personalities and designs, I took a lot of inspiration from comic series’ I love, like Sparklecare Hospital or Stupid Short Eevee Comics in a weird way.

Some lore even came from songz and stuff!! Literally, I thought of how Pico got his leg injury/scar while listening to Waving Through a Window from Dear Evan Hansen while on vacation, I shit you not

Helene Riley history part 2

(SPOILER ALERT)

Meeting Villains:

After her gang's formation she begin to meet the others villains like Robbie Rotten, Tord, Herobrine, Asriel, Vukmir, Chloe Bourgeois, Julie Hinikawa, Black Hat, ect. and work with them to fight against the heroes and other people once they saw them every day. At the time, she met the Disco Zombie and his team from Plants vs. Zombies, then team up with them to brought misery together. Their relationship got fall off in November 2021 for unknown reason.

When Tina got kicked out of Elaine's Crew for her bad behavior the same month she let her join Helene's to bring despair together until 2022.

The New Year's Day 2022 Incident:

She and her allies fought Elaine and heroes again and was prepared to fight, it was interrupted by the news regarding Trixie Prank leaves them terrified. Helene teleported to the Victopolis cemetery and saw Trixie's gravestone, she began to cry as she mourned her death. Helene teleported back to her mansion and kick the door open to her gang, much to their terrify reaction. Helene explaining them about the death of Trixie Prank and desperately ran out of her mansion, demanding her team will be disbanded. Her friends told her not to do but refuse to listen to her friends' advice until she gets overwhelmed by Amulet of Chaos which teleports her to the Void, leaving her friends horrified.

At her arrival, she was welcomed by Don Tech who introduced himself to her. Don explain his past to Helene after the latter asks him about how he lived. At the same time, he tells her to look around the void, she agrees with him to look around the place and following him. However, she feels scared when she saw the screens resembles her friends and other characters before both her and Don gets stopped by the glass breaking noises. They run to the other direction to checking it, It's the Dancing Zombie attempted to breaking the barrier, she initially wasn't fond of him due to his similar appearance to Michael Jackson, but starts to feel bad for him when Don reveals his mysterious past to her. He told her to bring him back to Los Angeles, but Helene declining it and bringing people to Los Angeles instead, triggering the incident around the city as she teleported back to her mansion until it went back to normal which caused her to fall, only to be saved by Sadistic Mean-spirited666.

Rings of Madness Terror Formation:

In the night of the start of January 2022, when she finally met Tessa and Lila near the mansion Molly appears next to them. She was impressed with Molly's return and the latter reunite with Lila following the day. Later, Helene make a deal for Molly about the sub-group for her. Molly accepts the deal and joins them. She later turn on the light that makes 6 people following the direction until they reach the mansion. Helene met the 6 people: Classic Stephanie, Rosemary, Pico, Trina Riffin, Kevin Goldstein (aka Entitled Commentator) and Granny. Soon, they join them as sub-members.

Next 2 days, she announces to the villains about the sub-group. Later, she called 7 people as a invitation for the sub-group. At that time, the 7 villains has arrived at Helene's Mansion where they meet the members of Helene's Gang and soon they join the sub-group thus finally formed as Rings of Madness Terror.

2023 is almost over (original post from my Newgrounds)

This year started with me trying to finish my entry for Pixel Day (and ended up releasing it unfinished) and ended with me trying to get blender to work properly on my computer so I can give a proper go at 3D animation. I went from coding on scratch to picking up godot and making my first game in that program (that wasn't a prototype) for Pico Day. This was the first year where I really tried to put in more effort in participating in collabs, jams and competitions no matter how many other projects I had going on in the background. Hell, even now I've joined the writer's jam and are waiting for the themes to come out.

I think that's all. I hope I haven't missed any out. I was planning on doing the most recent lunum dare but there was just so much going on at that period of time that I couldn't participate without driving myself insane.

Overall I would say my programming skills improved the most this year. Like I said earlier, I started this year using a modded version of scratch called turbowarp and now I know a decent amount in godot. I'm not a master at it, but I know enough for the types of games that I code.

Music is also another one that I think I've improved on. I've learned more about the DAW that I use, LMMS, and can do some fancy stuff with it like automatically making tracks louder and quieter and automatically changing the tempo. Also I'm a bit better at melodies and stuff because I started using scales and taking advantage of drums, and also because I make music quite frequently as I keep making tracks for my current project. I also started the compositions for my music GCSE this year so there's 2 of those.

I've gotten a bit better at voice acting because my current project is voice acted. My mic sucks but I'm getting a better one for Christmas.

So yeah that's basically it. I haven't used the blog feature much here ever since I moved most of my blogging stuff to tumblr, but this is special as it's mostly about Newgrounds (but I'll probably copy and paste it there too 'cause consistency). I have no idea what I'll do in 2024 apart from make that ddlc fangame idea that I have and also work on my main project.
