Stanford: I did, in fact! However, when you’re crossing multiple dimensions, what stays real and what doesn’t differs depending on which you’re in. After so many physical journals I’d tried to keep disintegrated from dimensional crossing, I decided to quit.

That is, until I came across Dimension 41′?. It’s much like ours, but if corporations ruled the world and ethics were thrown out the window in favor of technological advancement. A cyberpunk dystopia, if you will.

Stanley: I get the dystopia part, ‘cause we live in one. But cyberpunk? The hell is that? Care to nerd translate for me?

Stanford: You probably would like the genre, Stan. It’s usually about a group of people working to take down the law-

Stanley: I’m listening…

Stanford: The youth taking down the law, specifically, fixing the mistakes of a society they inherited. Granted, it’s pretty unrealistic that only mere teenagers could-

Stanley: Ugh, teenagers? Never mind! Spend half the damn story just figurin’ out which stupid fellow kid they’re gonna shack up with. *Stan’s voice raises an octave*. “Oh, hot boy one, how could I ever choose between you and hot boy two!? The world’s at stake and we’re barely surviving, but I need to get my rocks off before we dismantle the government together with the power of love and plot armor!”

That’s like that Divergence Games or whatever it’s called that Dipper had me endure last Summer. The part with kids fightin’ to the death? Couldn’t get enough of it! The rest, yeesh! Hollywood needs to make more dystopias with old crumbs like us as the main characters, who have realized that romantic love is overrated and what really matters is-

Stanford: Righting the wrongs of generations past? Grappling with the dark side of technology as humanity hurtles ever forward like a child playing with scissors on ice? Sacrificing your own potential gains to improve a society you won’t live long enough to see?

Stanley: I was gonna say family, money, and big explosions, but yeah, I guess those work, too.

Stanford: Anyways, Dimension 41′? was far more technologically advanced than ours, despite it being chronologically the same. The metal plate in my head isn’t the only upgrade I got out in the multiverse. I’d already gotten a neon blue mohawk to fit in with a gang of grandmotherly hackers in Dimension 41′?, so when I came across an implant that would store data inside my brain - a personal file folder accessible by mere imagination and thought - well, why not?

Something like that wouldn’t disintegrate when I crossed dimensions. A perfect place to keep a journal of sorts. Also, it was useful for storing the cookie recipes those nice ladies shared with me. And those weapon blueprints after we dismantled the government together there.

Stanley: See? I bet that’d make for a way better dystopian story than A Shindig of Love Triangles and Hormonal Angst like the crud in our dimension.

Stanford: Oh no, there was a love triangle. Actually a love pentagon, if I remember correctly. And a secondary love triangle at one point. Hah, those ladies were always getting into relationships with each other, then out, then in again.

By the end of our adventure, they all realized it was folly, gave up the drama, and got engaged to each other. Which reminds me, I need to borrow your suit next week, Stanley. Can’t be a best man without one!

hi!! hey, people don't need to know, like, everything about the stuff they enjoy. it's totally just enough to enjoy it. like, i love dance but i am not as much of a dancer as i am a vocalist, first and foremost, lol. so, what i see there is mostly informed by experience and a lot of dancers i know. but it is not nearly on the same level as my vocal expertise (and even then, i am not a studied vocal teacher, just a singer).

ANYWAYS, now to your question. oh my god, i just love it. because i adore both, btob and pentagon so much. btob could literally raise me out of my grave, the first notes of missing you are enough to revive me, ready to take eunkwang's high harmony. it's also my go-to karaoke song. so, i like. i just love to sing that song, man. more under the cut cause ramble.

i wanna start with changsub here, because he was one of the first vocalists i noticed in btob. his strong suit are a stunning falsetto (when he sings high notes in a high, soft pitch) and vibrato (when the voice, like, trembles after you finish a note). like, he is so beyond good at that and i think his tone is so crazy beautiful. sungjae and eunkwang harmonize so beautifully with him, too. they really compliment his voice tone. he has such a soft yet strong sound quality. his voice sounds like a lullaby, perfectly suited for pop ballads, yet he also sounds great on r&b songs. you catch my drift.

i fell in love with hyunsik super quickly, something about the fact that he wrote missing you immediately spoke to me. that song is like a cornerstone of my identity, i am sorry that i keep talking about it. anyways, his voice sits lower than eunkwang's or changsub's but he’s got those soaring vocals when he sings high notes. he was made to sing with eunkwang, i believe. like, these two voices are like honey and caramel. bread and butter. they belong together. he is super good in his own range, and especially when he allows his voice to really rise. he is soooo musically gifted. it's good when a vocalist knows his way around an instrument, or composing. and his tone is like a warm blanket on a cool day. he tends to go a little nasal but i think that is just his vocal quality. still, he often sings open and rich and beautiful.

now, hui. he is just, such a beast. he is not as technically finessed as either eunkwang or jinho, imo, but he is the most interesting vocalist among them in terms of tone, color and texture. he's got so much passion and drive behind his voice, and he is super stable. he's got range. like, he can sing well up high, up into his fifth octave, his mix is super strong which affords him to sing powerful and well articulated even when he exudes the range of his chest voice (and gave us basquiat etc.)

so, i have tiers for vocalists. the first tier are my top five. the second tier is where i would sort kyungsoo, hui, baekhyun, minjun, and probably kihyun from monsta x, too. i would sort changsub there as well. and i would probably sort hyunsik a little lower because he is simply not as versatile as the others, but a strong vocalist nonetheless.

first off hongjoong’s “wake up world” intro is so cool. it gives me chills.

the sirens(?) and the very cybernetic vibes of the synth are so cool (that synth key change freaked me out highkey it’s ominous)

when the guitar hits tho it’s so interesting, like it reminded me of “daisy” by pentagon (it’s the same key as that song actually iirc) but also it’s like a calmer “guerrilla” as well with jongho’s vocals.

this is a great intro imo

THE INTRO!!! IT’S FROM THEIR PREV MVs!!!! NEAR THE END WHEN YOU SEE THE MAN WITH THE MASK!! this literally got me so riled omfg!!

but omg the song is so so good! it’s one of my new favorite b-sides from them for sure

the chill intro and then jongho comes in and it completely becomes the hype ateez dance anthem vibe again

hongjoong + mingi rap coming in again and slaying fucking fr *cries* (mingi’s rap is so so good! it’s both lowkey but has his usual aggression it’s perfect) 

the pre-chorus is so good tho omg yunho *head in hands*

the make it rain / make a wave part is so fucking catchy omg i just groove to it

san’s part in the bridge with his lower register has me feeling some type of way *looks away*

oh my god the intro slapped me in the face

ooh the chorus tho... :000 the keys they’re hitting and the progression, it’s almost like a circus type of feeling i love it so much.

i like this one a lot, has a eerie vibe but very techno and dystopian i love it (the circus-y chorus made me think of the circus area in nier automata)

THIS SONG MOTHERFUCKING SLAPS!! it’s definitely one of my favorite title tracks from them already. 

on first listen i knew immediately

hongjoong and mingi’s raps are one of my new favorites for them for sure *nod nod* (the relaxed vibe in hongjoongs and the flow of mingi’s >>>>)

the song perfectly captures the vibe of their stroyline and the imagery they were creating in the mv and even on its own it explains the story perfectly! if you’re just getting into them this is still a great intro into their overall aura for sure!!

jongho’s vocals are really amazing in this one, the ones in the ending of the chorus are almost haunting it’s amazing 

the clearness of the guitar at the end of the chorus is pure ear candy i won’t take any other opinions. thank you.

yunho and san’s part in the second verse!!!!!!!! i lost my mind omg the way san went up in his falsetto set me off it was soooo pretty (such a contrast to the rough and dark color of the song i loved it)

THE BRIDGE >>>>>>>>

the metal elements were not overused or oversaturated which was so nice imo i’m glad they didn’t overuse the heavy metal screaming sample i think it would be too grating on my ears otherwise. they placed it in the song at the perfect times which is amazing 

overall the song is great. the composition is amazing 10/10 for sure!

mv/performance ;

okay now to just talk about the mv and the dance and stuff. omg this was an amazing comeback and it really speaks to their lore and storyline! they went all in with this one for their universe they’ve made and i’m absolutely in love with it!! when i saw the teaser where hongjoong took the mask off and the heavy metal screams came in i knew this was gonna be an amazing comeback and i was right!

the mv was absolutely amazing!! i loved the sets and the overall vibe. the way they’re starting the rebellion/revolution and rising up it feels like they’re phoenixes that the world they’re in tried to silence and they’ve risen again. 

this was my favorite image from the mv by far. the symbolism and the revolution themes here are so beautiful. the colors too i love it so much. this has to be one of the prettiest scenes i’ve seen in an mv period. i love it so much. if i’m not mistaken they’re referencing an existing painting (if you guys know it please let me know bc i can’t think of it right now). 

the visual effects are so wild but at the same time they could be overwhelming when hongjoong and mingi were rapping. i for one loved them, i say this more for people who may be new to atz or not aware of their storyline/lore, however it felt like it was fitting that it was overwhelming, bc at least for my interpretation they’re overwhelming this so-called perfect system the world they’re in claims to live in.

the styling was so nice too. the all black outfits were so nice but the ones they had in the area where the blimp flew over them were nice too! i loved the styling overall and it felt so good! 

i want to say props to their staff and their team for making such a great vibe that felt so unique and distinctive for ateez and the world they’ve made.

if you made it this far then thanks for listening to my rambling but i just had so many thoughts about this comeback (i’ll probs do this for other cbs as well when i feel up to it) this comeback is probably one of the best in 2022 and also just in general for me. i’m gonna enjoy and savor this era so much. it’s truly a masterpiece! ateez are such amazing performers and storytellers. period.

Kpop be smashing you with dope choreos and dope outfits and dope concepts or whatever. And sure, Pentagon does do that too because they can. But they also be wearing socks as a tie, half-shorts half-trousers or whatever you want to call it. They’d just scream UNIVERSE in the middle of their songs and be jumping around shouting HEY HEY and YAAAH and MY BABY. They wrote countless songs about being happy and hopeful, and loving their fans, they also wrote fuck the old generation and fuck the haters. And they’d be serving us a range of 84 octaves within one song. They genuinely have the most fun with simple and playful yet efficient concepts, just laughing and cheering each other like the kids they are and everything about them is absolutely wholesome. BUT the amount of work and dedication that goes behind their production is honestly unbelievable. Everything they do has a meaning, every word, beat and steps actually conveys something. Their approach to music is so passionate and genuine I can’t even wrap my head around how much I love them and how they deserve everything in the world.

The Meaning behind the Pentagon in Steven Universe

 So this pose along with the star suddenly turning into a pentagon, made me think of the Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man

It shows the idealized proportions of a man. The human body serves as an understanding of the universe with the naval (belly button) as the center, ah hello, where life begins. 

These proportions and the pentagon are often paired with the idea of the Divine or human perfection. 

The shape is supposed to improve overall health, which might help explain Stevens's change in physical appearance.

A pentagon also perfectly holds a star, or a pentagram..

Which has a whole history behind it reaching back to Ancient Greece, Babylonia, Christians and Wiccans.

It's also interesting to note that the stars intersection holds an upside down pentagon.

I’m wondering if the split second where the pentagon appears on Stevens shirt is supposed to represent his reach for Human Physical Perfection and also the reach to perfect/control his diamond powers. He is struggling to fully identify with Gems and struggling to fully identify with Humans. He is searching for BALANCE... and the pentagon is a pretty balanced shape. 

 Speaking of Diamonds. The traditional “perfect” diamond look you see in commercials also has the five points of a Pentagon.

“I think my diamond powers are coming out. I can’t control them”

He can’t control them, so he seeks Jasper to help him perfect his control over them, she was considered to be a perfect cut when she exited the Kindergarten after all. Steven has tried very hard to be perfect when we know that even ideas of human perfection and even perfect diamonds are not realistic.

 His search for finding who he is meant to be and what is future should look like has taken over not only his mind, but also his physical form at this point.

Not going to explore it really, but the Number 5 is pretty important aswell. Five points in a pentagon, five touchpoints in a star. Steven is the fifth of his core group: Pearl, Garnet, Amethyst, Greg and then Steven at number 5. He is also really the fifth of the diamonds, White, Yellow, Blue, Pink and now Steven. The drive of his character has been to be considered as good as the other gems he looks up to, a goal to become the Perfect fifth (consonant harmony in music, musical staff is made of five lines, scape with fives notes per octave is called a pentatonic scale). There is also an interest in the show with stardom, the rockstar, Greg, Steven, and Sadie. Five is a magical number, and yet is a very human number.

I wish I could find the source but I read somewhere that the Star, or pentagram, is considered infinite (spiritual) while the Pentagon is finite, meaning human. So Stevens Star Pentagon combination shows off his mixtures of spirituality (represented by magical qualities of the gems) and his humanity.

What could it all mean? What does it show in Stevens Character Development? I’d be interested to know what others think. I don't usually post about stuff I notice.

30. Heroine – Sunmi

I hesitate to call Sunmi feminist – does she consider herself one? Can k-pop really be feminist? – but her matter-of-factly, eyes-wide-open songs that touch on the position of women in relationships and in society are the closest thing to genuine female empowerment I’ve seen in k-pop. It doesn’t hurt that every single one of her songs is amazing.

29. Bboom Bboom – Momoland

Considering I usually hate “viral” songs – I’ve been brainwashed to like Gangnam Style just recently – I’m still shocked at how much I love Momoland’s Bboom Bboom. I’m also proud to say that I was an early adopter of the song, and watching their success skyrocket made my Q1. I’m still not tired of the sax line and of the “GREAT!” shouted during performances. This song (and Momoland, really) is just irresistible.

28. Retro Future – Triple H

The last ever song by Triple H (anger abounds) is just a taste of the genre-bending, sound-mixing, absurd-lyric-writing that we could have gotten for many years. Their retro-future has nothing to do with the Jetsons, and much more with insane 80’s synths and, well, that sexy vibe.

27. Love Shot – EXO

Well, EXO, that was last minute. My ambivalence towards EXO is represented by this song, which I both find ridiculous and adore at the same time. This song’s luscious synths and layered vocals make it elegant, then the performance makes it kitsch. I don’t know if I’ve been brainwashed, but it’s so great.

26. Not That Type – Gugudan

A thousand times yes for Gugudan doing edgier concepts. Not That Type is the spiritual successor to A Girl Like Me, and it’s almost as good. This song, however, is even tougher and more explosive. The new 8-member Gugudan is off to a great start.

25. Beautiful Feeling – Day6

Yet again, it’s my special skill to ignore all the popular songs that a group has, and in this case the rock vibe that defines it, and pick the sweetest, mellowest song they’ve put out. Day6 make some amazing power ballads, and Beautiful Feeling gives me warm and fuzzy feelings every time I listen to it.

24. Dinner – Suho ft. Jane Jang

I don’t know how the powers that be decided that this duet should happen, but the result is everything. Jane Jang’s one-of-a-kind voice layers beautifully over Suho’s, who ended up being often overlooked as an EXO vocalist for all these years.

23. Remember Me – Oh My Girl

Every single Oh My Girl put out is juicy in its on way. They may always go back to their foundational dreamy pop, but they never fail to throw in a twist. Remember Me’s EDM flavour and heavy rap are a total change from Secret Garden, but the song still blossoms into a romantic, airy chorus, and all of the members find something to sink their teeth into.

22. La Vie en Rose – IZ*ONE

My resolve to ignore the existence of IZ*ONE (and survival show groups in general) faded at the first two octaves of La Vie En Rose. This song does so much with so little: the atmosphere it creates, and the contrast between the powerful pre-chorus and the understated chorus are what makes the song for me. In the meantime I’ve started to learn their names, so I’m doomed.

21. I Want You – SHINee

SHINee’s constant stream of releases this year is at the same time a new beginning and the beginning of the end. It’s hard to imagine that a whole year has passed since Jonghyun, and it’s hard to think that the group has survived even though these songs are concrete proof. I really struggled to make it through the more melancholy songs, so I picked I Want You out of a series of basically perfect tracks.

20. LATATA – (G)I-DLE

I would be surprised if there was a single Boombayah lover who didn’t love this song. It has the same (pseudo-Indian?) influences, the same rhythms, the same anthemic quality. Latata is catchy, hypnotic, fun, and showcases all the members equally (ok, maybe Soyeon a bit more than everyone else). This is a textbook debut for 2018.

19. 1, 2, 3! – Seungri

Here’s someone who usually did club music and for once didn’t, and I loved it anyway! 1,2,3!  is retro, guitar-led and much more lighthearted than anything Seungri has ever done. It’s lovely to see a less sultry (and a biiiiit slimy?) side of him. Also Anda.

18. 22 Century Girl – fromis_9

I feel that my obsession with fromis_9 is still at its earliest stage, and that by the end of 2019 I will have gone totally mad for them. I am in love with their singles – To Heart, Love Bomb, what instant classics! – but the whirlwind of sounds of fever dream 22 Century Girl have stolen my heart.

17. Blue Moon – Gyeong Ree

Another one for the theme of this list: house! Give me all of it in your pop songs! Here’s hoping that Gyeong Ree (wasn’t it easier when she spelled it Kyungri? Anyway) continues her solo career with such intriguing, sophisticated but super-fun songs.

16. Stay Here – Sojung

I don’t know exactly, but I cry my eyes out more often than not when I hear this song. Ladies’ Code’s Sojung’s voce is as light as a feather, until it explodes in the soaring chorus. Everybody knows that I love any power ballad, but the complex emotional balance of this one is just on another level.  

15. Now or Never – SF9

I can’t say I’ve been following SF9 as idols, but I have been listening to all their releases and they have given me nothing but quality. I know I complain about songs with drops, but the deep house (yep, again) and that sensual “jealous” have been killing me ever since they came into my life. It might be my favourite hook of 2018.

14. I Love You – EXID

I was a bit taken aback by EXID’s Lady earlier in the year, but it was love at first listen with I Love You. The distorted hook opens and holds together a song that has all the best of EXID, including Solji, who has returned stronger than ever with flawless vocals and zero shame.

13. Dejavu – NU'EST W

You guessed it – house. Nothing has given me as much joy as the rise of NU’EST W, and I’ve been even happier because they did it with superb, incredibly on-trend songs while retaining the dark charm of their pre-success material. They really leaned into the “sexy bandit” thing, and I’m all for it.

12. Oh! My mistake – APRIL

This song is fluffy and super-poppy and at the same time side-eye in music, if that was ever possible. The super-innocent and cute concept that APRIL have been doing since forever is now tinged with tongue-in-cheek sarcasm, and a little creepy synth that perfectly matches the theme of the track. It’s so addictive and so delicious.

11. Snapshot – IN2IT

I love when smaller groups do really, really great and out of the box stuff instead of copying their more successful peers. I’ve watched countless performances, entranced by the bass that opens the song, holding my breath for that “heartbeat go fast, heartbeat go slow”. This is one sexy song, and IN2IT are one good rookie group that I will keep my eye on.

10. Timeless – NCT U

Leave it to me to find the most niche release a super-popular group has had, and fall in love with it so deeply that the rest (most of which I hated, not sorry) doesn’t count. NCT are too big of a group with some really, really good singers hiding in the back line while the rappers swagger about. I loved that some of them got their chance to show off and I adore this poetic, heartbreaking song.

9. Shine – Pentagon

I have to wonder if this song would have been higher in my charts if it wasn’t for the bloodbath that was of Pentagon and their career after this song came out. It’s such a pity that such a feelgood song has become, well, not so feelgood. This song’s wonky piano riff and anthemic chorus are still a delight, and their personality really shines (LOL) through. OT10 forever.

8. The Grand Dreams – Minseo

Where did Minseo even come from? Why hasn’t she been here our entire lives? Her dreamy vocals have been giving me life this year, and her refined musical sense (or of her producers, really) is a breath of fresh air when everything gets a bit to same-y in k-pop.

7. One of Those Nights – Key ft. Crush

Key came in last minute and slapped us all in the face with a perfect album that is reminiscing of SHINee’s work from earlier in the year, but also shows his personality as an artist. The lead single One of Those Nights moves fast and interweaves the melancholy of the lyrics in the music. Both Key and Crush are shockingly good vocalists, but together they just make each other shine even more.

6. Allegro Cantabile – Nature

Random music terms / Italian? I had to check it out. Nature put out something that’s a musical number, j-pop anime opening and k-pop bubblegum all in one. Their vocals are amazing and they are adorable. I’m excited to follow them into 2019.

5. DDU-DU DDU-DU – BLACKPINK

Is this Blackpink’s best offering? No. But what does it say when your not-best is still miles ahead of the competition? Blackpink have been doing k-pop bangers better than anyone else, and DDU-DU DDU-DU, from Jennie’s spitfire rap to Rosé’s melodies, hits all the right spots (like a ddu-du ddu-du).

4. Puzzle Moon – GWSN

This song is so good. These girls are so good. As I put together this list, I realised how much all I wanted in 2018 was a good deep house sample, and GWSN delivered. The bass contrasts elegantly with the tiny voices, and the obscure chorus – “make it moon” – emphasizes the magical atmosphere of this song.

3. Air – Winner

I miss old Winner. New Winner’s YOLO swag annoys me at best, so I dig through their b-sides in search for what we lost when Taehyun left. Air’s appropriately breathy chorus and gentle, romantic atmosphere did it for me and managed to put Winner on my podium yet again. Good job, Winner. Now stop it with the tropical house.

2. KILLING ME – iKON

The year started well for me (and everyone else) and iKON with Love Scenario, but I had no idea of where it would bring us. Killing Me’s bitter, moody atmosphere made for the dance song of my dreams. The decisive beat and array of distortions somehow create an eerie, understated atmosphere. It’s a dance song, but make it sad and a little creepy.

1. Oh My – Monsta X

I know. I am annoying myself by picking a b-side as my favourite song of the year, but here we are. Monsta X have become one of my very favourite groups and, while their album songs have always been amazing, to me Oh My summarizes everything I love and everything I want from them. In a year of minimalism, it’s loud, larger than life, unafraid of bleeps and bloops, rich in both vocals (Kihyun!) and proper rap sections. It’s the powerhouse that I expect from them and I hope to hear again and again.
