I think Fantasy High would look good animated in the total drama style since they’re both chalk full of chaotic sweaty teenage energy. Here are the bad kids on their first day of school

First impression: i watched FH for the first time at the recommendation of a couple of friends (one of them being @aflockofwildgeese) and i was DMing one of the friends and after fabian's intro i joking went like "haha this snobby rich kid is my favorite forever i dont need any of the rest of the characters" and then he actually was. my favorite forever.

Impression now: he's my son??? i love how awful he is and how he gets better but never loses that I Am Pretty Little Rich Boy energy. I hope he keeps it forever. also fabian's s2 arc is one of my favorite things in existence.... toxic masculinity is DEADUHHH.

Favorite moment: "are you all so POOR that you don't know what a BANK is? it's just a BANK!" "i have a motorcycle, it's possessed, papa!" fabian explaining what happened to bill's old crew after his confrontation with james whitclaw to the bad kids and having an actual breakdown.

Idea for a story: i simply think that fabian and the bad kids should have a combat that's just a dance battle with johnny spells's crew

Unpopular opinion: fabian should not get any better. he is perfect as is, i don't want him to be any better of a person than he is now because he's at his peak comedy threshold

Favorite relationship: probably fabian and bill, though i also love fabian & cathilda. fabian and bill is my fave FH kid/parent relationship. it's definitely messed up but it's also... so pure

Favorite headcanon: fabian & riz have BFF one-on-one hangouts all the time. like they are some of the only ones NOT living at mordred manner of course they're hanging all the time.

I Like Him | BlackMissFrizzle 2K Challenge

Summary: Destiny has a hard time deciding which one of the Mayans she’s in love with.

A/N: Okay, I finally completed something to submit for @blackmissfrizzle 2K Challenge. The song that inspired this is “I Like Him” by Princess Nokia. It’s one of my favorite songs right now and the video she dropped a few days ago made me even more obsessed with it. It’s down below the tag list if any one is interested. I had so much fun writing this, and I hope that translates and you guys enjoy it just as much. Reblog/like/comment and let me know!

Coco

Coco didn’t know how it happened, but the clubhouse had quickly become the hot hangout spot for Leticia and her college girlfriends. First it was Gabi, then Karmen, and finally, Destiny.

Despite his unexpected introduction to her, Coco liked Gabi. She was a good girl who kept Letty grounded. They were all good girls, but Destiny was Letty’s kindred spirit, another little troublemaker. Because they were good girls, Bishop didn’t mind them hanging around. They weren’t to be present during the weekend parties when other Mayans or Sons were likely to be in attendance, but any other time they were welcome.

The girls used the clubhouse to study, comparing notes with each other. Chucky made them snacks, and when no one was looking they were sometimes able to sneak alcohol drinks. Coco had caught them in them back gulping down beers too many times to count. He was doing worse at their age, so he let them off with a simple roll of his eyes.

Whenever he left Templo, his eyes automatically sought out the trouble making twins, interested to see what they had gotten themselves into during his absence. Every time Coco approached them, Destiny beamed like she was in a Spearmint commercial.

“Hey dad!” Letty would say, and it warmed his heart that she had come around to accepting him as her father. But then Destiny would greet him with the same “Hey dad!”, making him feel warm in other places. She always said it with a little smirk on her face which made him certain she knew what she was doing.

If the girls were hanging out and it got too late, Destiny would spend the night at their place. He didn’t mind because she always made breakfast and cleaned up her mess afterwards. Coco couldn’t help but eye her backside in the little booty shorts she wore.

Destiny always turned around to greet him with that playful, “Hey, dad!”. He would just shake his head and go out on the back porch, lighting up a cigarette. He listened to the sounds of the neighborhood while the girls bickered in the kitchen.

Letty would shove her friend and tell her to stop acting like a hoe. Destiny would just laugh. “It’s not my fault your dad is hot!”

“Stop saying that! Do I come to your house and talk about how hot your dad is?” Coco resisted the urge to growl at that admission.

“Yes. You do actually. That’s why we’re even. Besides, he knows I’m just playing. That’s my boo.”

Ezekiel

Destiny loved flirting with Ezekiel because he had a great smile and gorgeous dimples. Plus, when she took fun digs at him he gave as good as he got.

“What’s up, old man?” She knew the nickname drove him crazy. He was the youngest out of the Mayans, but for someone her age, he was an old man.

In retaliation, he called her the only thing that would be fitting. “What’s up, little girl?” That nickname drove Destiny equally crazy so it was the perfect response. She stopped calling him old, but his nickname for her stuck regardless.

Depending on how her hair was done, Ezekiel teased her about it. If it hung loosely, he’d tug on it, disappearing in the other direction like a schoolboy on the playground. Up in two high ponytails or buns? He teased her about looking like the old-school handlebars on kiddy bikes, or a wanna be Princess Leia.

“You’re trying to make fun of me, but you’re really just telling your age, old man.”

On weekends, the girls hung at the food truck during the day to keep Gabi company while she worked. Sometimes the guys stopped by for lunch. When they did, the girls sat on the bed of the truck, swinging their legs.

Like a kindergartner, Destiny would stick her leg out in a piss-poor attempt to trip Ezekiel. He’d retaliate by snatching her taco and running off with it. When he was feeling nice, he’d take a bite and then offer it back instead of scarfing down the whole thing.

“I don’t even want it anymore.”

“Suit yourself.” EZ shrugged his shoulders, going back to talking with the guys.

Destiny folded her arms over her chest in fake annoyance until he broke and bought her a new one. She and Letty always called about how easily manipulated he was by women.

When Gabi finally admitted to her friends she was catching real feelings for EZ, Destiny took the opportunity to fuck with her. “But he’s my man!”

Angel

The first time Destiny laid eyes on Angel Reyes she was in love. Well, puppy love, but still love.

“Who is that?” She asked, tapping Letty’s hand. The young woman rolled her eyes at her friend’s wandering eyes. “No, seriously. That’s my type.” Destiny bit down on her lip, eyeing the biker as he made his way towards them.

“They’re all your type.” She heard Letty mutter under her breath, but ignored her to watch her future husband. Angel strolled over to them, giving the customary head nod before turning his attention to Chucky. Destiny turned in her chair to watch him as he asked the other man for a favor.

“Don’t break your neck.” Letty joked. “Stop drooling, coqueta.” Destiny eyed Angel from head to toe, liking what she saw. A head full of healthy hair, tattoos all up and down his arms, big boot-clad feet. She watched him swagger away and guessed by his gait he was working with something underneath those jeans.

Angel joined the other guys across the room. Karmen and Gabi made their return to the table from the bathroom. “Who is she looking at now?” Karmen asked, following her friend’s line of sight.

“Yeah.” Gabi chimed in, grinning at the stars in Destiny’s eyes. “Which one do you like now?” The ‘now that EZ is taken’ went without saying.

Destiny nodded towards Tranq first. The older man had intricate, colorful tattoos that peaked her interest. She wouldn’t mind seeing the ones he hid underneath his clothes. “I like him.”

Taza was a bit too old for her taste, but he had an other-worldly vibe that drew her in. “Like him too.”

Then she moved on to EZ. She tried not to marvel at the gorgeous veins on his thick arms. Gabi would just have to understand. Or be mad. Destiny didn’t really care. “He my man.”

Destiny’s big eyes settled on Coco. He was saying something animatedly, the crook in his jaw more prominent than ever. It added character. “He my boo.” Letty groaned in annoyance.

“He’s my type. He’s so cute.” She let out a deep sigh for Angel. “I want him.”

Her eyes finally settled on El Presidente. He was a small man with a big presence. The big dick energy was strong with him. “And I want him too.”

They thought she was done until Riz, Creeper, and Gilly came inside from the yard, setting her off on another tangent.

The Report Card -- Fantasy High Sophomore Year Ep 1

Sophomores and Spring Break

Note: Hey guys! I decided to try something a little bit different and slightly more structured than my usual recaps for FH: Sophomore Year. I’m hoping this will be a little easier for me and a more useful tool for keeping up to date since there will be a lot more eps to keep track of and they’ll be easier to miss. Lemme know what you think and if you want raw, unfiltered opinions on anything specific, feel free to send me an ask. I’m always down to go off about literally whatever.

We’re back, baby! It is Sophomore Year at Aguefort and the gang is on Spring Break. A lot is going down so lemme break it down. The Bad Kids, having defeated Kalvaxus last year, are all entitled to a share of his hoard and all the red tape is finally cleared so they all get 20k gold each (which is an insane amount of money converted to USD if you use the WOTC conversion rate of a gold coin being around $145 (circa 2006 when they answered the question)--which would be close to $330 with inflation). Jawbone and Sandra-Lynn are moving in after less than a year into a profoundly haunted house and it’s kind of a Full House situation because Adaine, Fig, Kristen, and Tracker all officially live there (plus it seems that Zayn has also anchored himself to Adaine’s tower--btw, Adaine took the tower that the haunted house obviously has) and you know all the other Bad Kids are gonna be there on the regular.

More importantly, Aguefort gives the gang their big project for the year--finding the crown of the Nightmare King which was stolen at the end of last season--which is worth 60% of their grade (Adaine does a full Hermione at this information). Each of the gang has info about the NK but the trail has mostly gone cold. Luckily, Fabian just got a hot tip about where Falinel is keeping Aelwyn and she seems like a pretty good lead to start with since she was super tied up in the bad side of all the messiness of last year. Adaine is displeased to say the least.

Going off to find the crown is super exciting story-wise for two reasons. First of all, it means the gang gets to hire, well, hirelings to help them and temporarily join the party! They ping basically every cool NPC they can think of (except for Tracker for some reason which is BONKERS because (1) she probably would have done it for free and cutting her in would still be keeping the money in the family, (2) she’s dope as hell, (3) she’s a cleric and the party can always use more healers, (4) she’s a werewolf so presumably she has skills that would help in the woods, and (5) they’re t r a c k i n g down a crown and the girl’s name is literally T R A C K E R, but I will not backseat D&D) and eventually end up with Ragh (who has been without an adventuring party all year, poor guy), Sandra-Lynn (swayed by a nat 20 rolled by Fig), Cathilda (!?) ,and, for some reason, Gilear (which Fabian is happy about, mainly for the opportunity to maybe bump him off on the way). Second of all, if you recall, Elmville is a pretty modern town but the rest of the continent is less fantasy high, more high fantasy. Horses and lanterns and all that pseudo-medieval goodness. They are gonna stick out like a sore thumb. I am very here for it.

Everyone goes home to rest up but, after some ominous dreams, only four of them wake up. Riz and Fig are left asleep and then Brennan mic drops and ends the episode which is a power move and I am extremely upset about it but also, respect. Right for the jugular immediately. I heard Murph and Emily are on tour in the UK next week which probably has something to do with this but, in the moment, I did not know that and I really felt the hammer drop in my heart. It was wild. Cannot wait to see where we go from here. Plus, who doesn’t love watching characters freak out because their friends are in danger?

Random Thoughts

I have no idea what the title of this episode is or if it’ll even have one and not a number but I gave it a placeholder one for now. I also don’t have access to the stream yet so I didn’t get to include some info I wanted to (like a record of nat 20s, and nat 1s so I can track their stats for the school year) and I probably missed some stuff because my brain can only hold so much info guys. I’m not Brennan.

I mentioned this yesterday during the stream, but there will never be anything better than the pure D&D joy of everyone, in character, talking over each other to clown on each other. They get the friend-group banter that’s a hair breadth’s away from bullying so true to life and it’s so fun to watch. On the flip side, the opening scene with everyone introducing themselves and affirmatively claiming each other as their best friends was also peak D&D. Found family= best trope.

Fig and Adaine burn spell-slots at basically the same time to try and beat each other to the best room in the (Scooby-Doo ass) house--which is exactly the kind of thing that would happen in this world. It’s such an intuitive setting. I love it so much. (BTW, Fig ends up staying in the false space under the revolving grand piano because, of course).

Fabian and Gorgug went to recruit Ragh, who assumed they were propositioning him for a three-way. In his defense, they did do it in a super proposition-y way and they were in the middle of the LGBTQ student union.

Also, Gorgug gives Ragh an inspiring speech about thinking you’re your own dad which makes him burst into tears.

Speaking of, Jawbone offhandedly says he’s poly but, like, based on some of the stuff he’s said, I feel like that’s not really a reveal. He also gets along well with Gorthalax and would be down w/ a three-way if Sandra-Lynn wanted to which, again, totally checks out.

Arthur Aguefort uses Chronomancy to rewind time and catch a snide comment Adaine made under her breath, which is exactly the kind of frivolous use of God-like power I’d expect from him.

I really love Adaine’s energy coming into this season. She’s in therapy. She’s in a good home environment. She’s comfortable enough with her friend group to do stuff like prank Fig (love that they’re gonna be living together now). And she’s good friends with Zayn now which I want to see more of based on their one interaction in this ep which was very cute. I am already on record as saying I would be down with her getting a ghost boyfriend--I mean, for the aesthetic alone--but I’d be happy with just more friendship.

Fabian is also hilarious this season because you can tell he’s gone a bit soft from having friends and leaning into that (the friendship necklace with Riz) but also he’s fully aware that it’s happening so he’s, like, ping-ponging back and forth like, “These are my friends,” and, “What am I saying? I used to be cool,” and it’s very funny. Very happy the Aelwyn storyline is happening right out of the gate, both because I think Aelwyn is a very interesting character with a lot of potential for nuance but also because Fabian reacting to her and Adaine reacting to Fabian reacting to her is always gold.

Prompted by an offhand conversation from Fig about rock and roll, Brennan--earning another feather for his Cap of God Tier DMing--goes on an impromptu five minute long improved diatribe about a bard who played such a good concert that it instantly impregnated everyone in attendance (dudes too) who gave birth to kids with sick rocker hair and denim jackets and ascended to Rock Heaven on their 18th Birthday. You truly have to watch it to believe it. At a certain point I thought he was gonna drop it but that was the moment he doubled down and kept going. Amazing.

Watching Murph, in real time, make up a girl/boy/whateverfriend in Fantasy Canada was a gift.

I don’t have access to the stream yet but best quote of the night that I can remember is Kristen choosing her room: This is triggering and I’ll take it. (Her line about her lesbian starter kit and the one about wanting a horse were also bangers).

The group talks about what they’re going to do for transportation outside of Elmsville since they don’t really use cars out there and they somehow get from “disguise Fig’s tour bus” to “commission Aguefort to create a brand new animal that can hold six people plus hirelings, one of which is Fabian who is also riding his motorbike”.

I love that Sandra-Lynn’s Mom Powers work on Tracker.

Basrar doesn’t accept the invitation to come with on the quest, but he does give Kristen a bag of infinite ice cream sandwiches, which is basically just as good, IMO.

Oh Gilear. The man is sleeping in the Seacaster garage, being bullied by skater kids, and now he’s stuck on this quest with his ex and Fabian who actively wants him dead.

Speaking of, I’m psyched to see more of Sandra-Lynn. She was kind of a sleeper badass at the end of last season.

Ragh is keeping secrets which I hope the cast doesn’t forget because it could be nothing serious (like the high school drama happening with Skrank and the 7 maidens--maybe he’s just crushing on Gorgug who did full kiss him during Promocalypse) or it could be Serious Business that will blow up if the don’t stay on top of it. We’ll see.

Oh, almost forgot. Adaine wants an emotional support frog. Every time I think I can’t love her more.

Detention

Fig for Not Respecting Personal Boundaries

Fig goes full Emily right out the gate and, after finding out that Skrank (nerdy bird dude who apparently can get it) was not only dating Ostentasia (rich, popular dwarf) but also dumped her in pursuit of Danielle Barkstock (one of Ostentasia’s party members, the scandal), disguises herself as him with Danielle to figure out what’s going on. And, wouldn't you know it, when she gives herself away, Danielle immediately is shocked and appalled, as you would be, obviously. We also learn that she’s still catfishing Dr. Asha which is, how you say, for sure a crime. Fig, please, I’m begging you. Cease.

Wasn’t my plan for this to be a three-way tie (also didn’t expect to use the word “three-way” this many times in this writeup) but I think their contributions were pretty much equally valuable. Facts

The party is currently at 44,100 exp. each. Next level is at 48,000 (which will probably take 3 more big battles, 2 if Brennan is super generous with RP awards).

Abernant family had all their land and wealth reclaimed by The Court of Stars for their treachery and failure to prevent a war with Solace. Elianwyn committed treason and betrayal as well.

To save Adaine, the group decided to break up into 3 teams: Pylon 1 (Ragh, Tracker, Cathilda, and Sandra Lynn), Pylon 2 (Gorgug, Fabian, and Riz), and Recovery (Ayda, Fig, and Kristen). Team 1 and 2 would simultaneously take out the pylons. Then, the recovery team would go in (invisible and/or disguised) and gets Adaine and Aelwyn. They would all meet back at Van where they would most likely use Ayda's teleport to leave Fallinel (or regroup to plan their next move).

Crinkle in the corners of his eyes shows his age in sort of an Elrond way. He look of a dude in his late 40s/early 50s who took excellent care of his body and kept it tight

Obsessed with the fact that his grandson will die before him (Your human blood has brought mortality to this family. You will one day die.)

Offers to send word to an elf who is a fabled eye smith who lives on the high mountains at the heart of Fallinel that can craft a working eye (from songs, whispers, beams of moonlight, jeweled edges of the blue of the sea, and shimmering poems pulled from the ether itself) for Fabian, but has no clue how long it will take (a moment, a year, or a hundred years).

Can't pronounce words in common very well, especially words he's never heard before (which delights Fabian and pisses off Gorgug)

Calls Fabian Aramais Seacaster fa-bee-ahn ah-rye-ah-my-ess Seacaster (which might actually be the proper pronouncations of his name in that region as "Seacaster" was said correctly and that's how all the other elves say his name as well) and calls Hallariel ha-lair-ee-el

Weeps without moving his face, but also sometimes makes a soft eeehhhh sound when he cries (at one point he cried over a drop of water)

Gifted stewardship of Khy-low Meh-new-rah 3000 years ago after he crafted The Sword of the North Star (he was the smith of fung-dran-ghoor) for the ancient king of Fallinel Th-wrist-win Eversong.

"Without the Elven Oracle, we are lost."

Saw the Abernants as power hungry and cruel and can't understand why they would leave Fallinel. He found Anguin in particular to be a crass and small man with no nobility, only a thirst for power.

Thinks Riz has a harsh energy, is "a little dick", and calls him "a strange green mouse thing"

Got physically ill when a gun was explained to him, calling it gross and some dwarven kind of thing before vomiting which he turns into a flock of white crows

Fabian's aunt

Tried to heal Fabian's pneumonia with elvan singing

Said "I have failed" when her singing doesn't work before she fades into starlight and vanishes

Hal-door-in and [unnamed youth]

Felt really good when he tried out dance yoga, even wondering if he should be some kind of yoga dancer instead of a fighter (how about a whirling dervish dancer like Cathilda?)

The grapes he put in his pocket (after refusing to eat them) turned into song

Indifferent towards saving Aelwyn and doesn't want to be on the retrieval team

When he started feeling anxious about the Aelwyn stuff, Riz told him to lose himself in dancing again to feel free (Riz: You are the only one that I wanna see dancing right now.) It made him feel much better.

The Italian food company has set a design competition to define the iconic architecture of the new Ferrero Technical Center. Frigerio Design Group has been selected for the human values of its design proposal: an industrial structure integrated into the landscape, designed for the well-being of employees and respect for the planet.

Alba (Cuneo, Italy) | A new technical center for Ferrero, the Italian multinational food company, where its unique corporate identity, history and know-how converge. The Ferrero Technical Center, designed by Italian studio Frigerio Design Group, stems from the need to combine the company’s engineering operations, in particular those devoted to designing new production lines, with the workshop where they are developed – currently not located within the factory.

Following a competition by invitation held by Ferrero in 2017, the project was awarded to Frigerio Design Group. The concept of the design centers on a building that is sustainable and integrated in the territory but also able to support management and operational functions: for automated and interconnected production. The new center boasts a 12,700 sq m ecological building that is nZEB (nearly Zero Energy Building) and will host 200 employees. The work began in 2020 and will be completed in December 2021.

The Ferrero Technical Center is located in Alba, Italy, a city closely connected to the history of the group and where Ferrero has its biggest Italian production facility. The architectural project was inspired by the scenery, nature and colors of the Langhe, the hilly area located in Piedmont region in northern Italy. They were reinterpreted through abstract geometries using warm colors from yellow to red.

Simple and linear architecture conceals plants and technical equipment. The compact building maximizes all the passive space and minimizes the resources needed for operations and maintenance. Safety and sensorial comfort are key to the entire architecture, aiming at total quality in line with the standards of Industry 4.0: automation and interconnection, human / machine reciprocity and insertion in a specific ecosystem. Technology is ubiquitous throughout the new center, but it is never obtrusive. It is always seamlessly integrated in a recognizable and reassuring architecture.

The architectural project

Transparency and opacity define the iconic architecture: the offices located on the last floor have transparent facades, whereas the lower floors containing the workshop and plants are hidden from view. The great hall, entirely glazed, covers one end from ground to roof with a grand staircase connecting the three floors of the building.

The workshop was designed with a minimal and essential floorplan where the primary color is white. Openings in the facade capture natural light while preventing direct sunlight: the architect Enrico Frigerio refers to them as actual “gills” that enable the building to breathe. The curtain walls selected for this area have micro-perforated and sound-absorbing panels to improve the quality of internal acoustics and minimize any sound pollution.

In the offices, located on the last floor, the materials and colors reproduce the landscape and nature surrounding the building, so making the offices an actual “high-altitude landscape”. Six green areas, named by the architect “flying gardens”, were introduced to perform a bioclimatic, acoustic and aesthetic function.

Sustainability and architectural comfort The building – bioclimatic and nZEB (nearly Zero Energy Building) – was developed to minimize carbon dioxide emissions. The volume is compact, made from industrial materials, mainly dry assembled: it maximizes all the passive contributions (light, air and sunshine) and minimizes the resources needed for its management and maintenance, without renouncing a sober and clear identity. A photovoltaic system on the roof generates a peak of 300 kW.

University book: complete?

Here I am about 3 years and 4 months since my first post (approximately anyways).

I PASSED NURSING SCHOOL.

I just read my 3 posts previously and I feel like such a grandma. That was a lifetime ago, and I feel like so many things have changed. Also I have no idea who Alaska is…

So what’s up with me now?

I GOT A NURSING JOB. Which is totally a huge deal considering I have been out of school for not even a month now, and I did not have to go through any horrific job searching. IT IS A BIG DEAL. How do I feel about it? NERVOUS AS HECK. but I am also very excited to be starting this chapter and becoming a real nurse (well temporary licensed … but eventually)

STILL SINGLE. Been on first dates, made out with a decent amount of strangers (mostly drunk), was/is (really not sure) in love with my best friend, and really just hoping I don’t die alone. Edward is no longer in my life, other than the occasional text conversation we have on our birthdays. As far as I know he has a girlfriend, for almost a year now. I miss him today, but usually it does not faze me. I really got over it … like after 3 years, and I am very happy with who I am. I think right now its just experiencing new people and hopefully finding the right one.

MY FAITH. Right now is not at a peak, I have regressed over the past couple months due to the craziness that is nursing school (4th years might I add). But I have made so many breakthroughs in this past school year thanks to RC. I love how I feel about myself and God, and I know it will just get better. I definitely need to get on track, but I have faith.

FRIENDS. I feel so blessed to have found the people at RC, especially Riz and Lex. They have become like soul sisters to me over the past school year. I still have the TBD crew, but in terms of individual relationships with each member … not as strong but I accept that happens. My BM girls, definitely distant … not #1s by any means, but I know we always have each other. Junie is top, she is my go-to and that will NEVER change. Disney is the same as always. I am still trying to grasp my emotions though, I recently had an off hangout so I am questioning some things. Still rooming with designer and retail, who I love dearly … but it has been hard to spend time. Balancing so many different relationships is so hard. I hate it sometimes. I envy those that have their core and just put all their heart into that. I will admit I put energy into relationships that are not majorly significant in my life and that is a flaw. I will keep trying to figure it out.

FAMILY. The best. No words other than love. I am so happy to be home and with my parents. I am so in awe of how amazing our relationship has blossomed over the years. I truly cherish every moment.

The Pell Bridge measures 2.1 miles across and rises to a peak that stands 400 feet off the water to allow Navy aircraft carriers to pass underneath the roadbed below. Students began by creating a 3D model of the existing bridge structure.

Providence, RI, August 2021 – Rhode Island School of Design’s Interior Architecture students have created innovative design proposals to add pedestrian and cycling lanes to Pell Bridge, an iconic suspension bridge connecting Newport and Jamestown, RI.

When the state of Rhode Island completed the iconic Newport Bridge in 1969, the massive steel-framed suspension bridge connecting Jamestown and Newport stood as a testament to economic and technological progress. Measuring 2.1 miles across (about the length of Central Park in NYC) and rising to a peak that stands 400 feet off the water in order to allow Navy aircraft carriers to pass underneath the roadbed below, the bridge offers motorists spectacular views of Narragansett Bay.

In 2019, when the state celebrated the 50th anniversary of the structure (which has been renamed the Claiborne Pell Bridge after the longtime US senator), Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and other forwardthinking government leaders wondered if there was a way to make the bridge accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. They also hoped to reroute access on the Newport side, where the on-ramp now divides the economically disadvantaged North End from the more affluent areas of the city. Professor Liliane Wong, who heads up RISD’s Interior Architecture department, posed the design challenge to graduate students in a spring studio focused on adaptive reuse. “Proposing change to an icon like the Pell Bridge is difficult,” Wong notes. “Our goal was to help acclimate the public to something new using virtual reality to create an immersive 3D experience.”

Eight graduate students—Shuyi Guan MLA 22, Nupoor Maduskar MA 21, Saira Margarita Paz Nepomuceno MA 21, Seung Hwan Oh MLA 22, Demi Okunfulure MA 21, Sofia Paez MA 21, Mohan Wang MLA 22 and Yu Xiao MLA 22—formed cross-disciplinary teams of two and developed stunning visions for adding a suspended lower level to the bridge that would allow for pedestrians and cyclists as well as arts venues, parks, cafes and even a floating fish market.

With guidance from Wong and faculty members Michael Grugl, Andrew Hartness and Wolfgang Rudorf, students considered everything from intense wind conditions to expected sea level rise to new, lightweight composite materials in their plans. They studied successful projects launched elsewhere, like the Lightpath in Auckland, New Zealand and Superkilen Park in Copenhagen, Denmark, with an eye toward environmental impact, social equity and feasibility.

Okunfulure and Wang proposed a system that would harness solar and wind energy via photovoltaic and piezoelectric components to power the bridge’s lights as well as 275 homes (see image, above). They describe their methodology as “a holistic approach to the future of bridge design that captures energy through infrastructure.”

Maduskar and Xiao played off the area’s historic fisheries and envisioned a new floating fish market and a series of floating eco-islands along the span that would create new habitats for fishes and spur a new type of fishing tourism. The project pays homage to the state’s fishing economy by incorporating an architectural vocabulary of nets that play with natural elements such as light, wind and gravity.

Nepomuceno and Oh also hope to boost the local economy with their proposal and to embrace tourism with a welcome center, docking points for sailboats and a spectacular outdoor theater on the bridge viewable from a new floating amphitheater. Paez and Guan responded to concerns about high winds with an enclosed 3Dprinted structure created from carbon fiber and wrapped with a translucent composite membrane. These groundbreaking construction methods would be safer, quicker and less costly.

In late May the class presented their ideas to Whitehouse’s team using cardboard VR viewers and a tour of the site created with Pano software, offering a visceral sense of what it would mean to cross the Pell on foot. “I am completely in awe of the vision and talent of these RISD students,” says Whitehouse. “They reimagined what the Pell Bridge could be. I hope Rhode Islanders will be inspired by these designs as we look to include more innovative elements in future infrastructure projects.”

Funding from the Champlin Foundation allowed the Interior Architecture students to purchase VR/AR headsets, a stationary bike and other equipment needed to create an immersive exhibition presenting the four design schemes at RISD’s Sol Koffler Graduate Student Gallery (on view August 2–6, 1–5 pm). Plans are also in the works for the exhibition to travel to a series of other Rhode Island venues. The goal is to inspire citizens and encourage government leaders to adopt elements of the student designs for implementation.

Wong was on hand to introduce the project to visitors at the exhibition opening. “Whatever the long-term outcome of their proposals, I couldn’t be more proud of the students in this class,” she says. “As the culminating learning experience in a post-professional program, the studio supports RISD’s commitment to sustainability—a pillar of our strategic plan—and pushed them to consider real-life parameters such as communities divided by economic disparity, the threat of sea level rise and the positive and negative effects of tourism on the city. These are exactly the kinds of issues that successful professionals contend with in practice.”
