ALBUM OF THE MONTH—SNAPSHOTS https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/album/snapshots-live-half-plugged-expanded-reissue  ...Cappuccino and novel reading fueled SNAPSHOTS, an album of songs extracted from my appearances on TV shows as well as concerts and the studio. I released this album in 2003 when I earned the tag "The Tasmanian Devil of the coffee house set." Part of my audience wanted a raw, acoustic album. Hence SNAPSHOTS—a mix of blues, California pop, roots rock’n’roll, and gospel standards ("Workin' on a Building”). Live cuts include energetic covers of Patti Smith’s "Dancing Barefoot" and a Staples Singers-styled remake of "For What it's Worth” (Buffalo Springfield) performed on slide 12-string guitar.
Writers are outsourced in the Beatle-esque "Unresolved (Graham Greene's Script for Laurel and Hardy)" and "Desert Ruby" is a semi-autobiographical "Los Angeles allegory," with images from The Bible and Raymond Chandler. SNAPSHOTS also has 2 of my personal favorites, The Beach Boys-influenced “Like a Father a Son” and "Steinbeck Found the Valley"—an instrumental with accordion, cellos, piano, and trombones by Richard Marriott.
Please enjoy this collection of audio snapshots of my life:

10 facts Kirsty? 🥺
1 – Kirsty's main comfort items are a stuffed whale from Mia and a blanket knit by Sookie. She's had both since she was a baby, and Sookie knit the blanket big enough that even now it fully covers her
2 – Whenever Kirsty is really stressed or overwhelmed, she goes into a deep cleaning overdrive until she physically can't anymore and just ends up laying on the floor wherever she was last working
3 – Kirsty became fascinated with photography when Rachel was around when she was a kid, got her first camera from Rachel and still has it, whenever she isn't participating in town events for Patty, she's taking pictures
4 – Kirsty has a key to Miss Patty's (she's the only other person who does) and when she's having a difficult time with her brain she'll go at night and either goes on one of her cleaning sprees until she falls asleep on the mats or she just puts on her music and dances until she's too exhausted to keep going
5 – Kirsty has a car (at least until Teach Me Tonight) which was a gift that Emily insisted on getting for her sixteenth birthday, but Kirsty is terrified of cars and never gets her license
6 – Emily is significantly more involved in Kirsty's life. When Kirsty was 8 she took the bus to Hartford by herself and made a deal that Emily would pay for all of her activity fees (mainly dance/skating/gymnastics but also travel fees to competitions) in exchange for Kirsty having lunch with her every Sunday. Over the years this grew to include Kirsty's involvement with the DAR (she actually enjoys planning events for them) and a lot of Emily's other organizations/committees, as well as Emily accompanying her to New York every December for Kirsty to be in the New York Ballet's Nutcracker. While Kirsty loves Emily and Emily tries to love Kirsty, Kirsty is also very much her attempt at a do-over daughter and can be controlling to the point of abusive, Kirsty has yet to unpack how traumatized she actually is from some of it
6B – Emily being hyper-controlling and hypercritical has also led to Kirsty developing an eating disorder as a child and was a main factor in her severe addiction spiral
7 – Kirsty's natural hair colour is very auburn, but after getting home from her New York trip with Emily in her freshman year of high school she had Chandler (her best friend) dye it dark brown, and that night was also when she got drunk at a party for the first time
8 – Kirsty suffers from a lot of chronic pain from dance (especially hips, knees, and ankles) and is almost always using at least one hot water bottle when she's at home. For her sixteeth birthday, Sookie knit her a whole collection of cute covers for them
9 – Kirsty also struggles with chronic fatigue. On her bad days she can be found carrying her blanket from Sookie around everywhere until she finally feels comfortable to just curl up somewhere and rest
10 – some of Kirsty's main ballet's have been Nutcracker (she's been a party girl, Clara, a snowflake, the Snow Queen, and the Sugarplum Fairy), Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, Coppelia, the Secret Garden, Swan Lake (as Odette/Odile), Alice in Wonderland, and she's done a Phantom Of The Opera as Meg when she was pretty young but then again when she was older as Christine. She's also been a New York City Rockette for years and was a dancer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris
10B – she's also been on Broadway, and some of her main roles have been Victoria Cats, Natalie in Next To Normal (OBC), Jenna in Waitress (OBC + wins a Tony), Sophie in Mamma Mia (thinking National Tour not Broadway), Satine in Moulin Rouge (OBC + wins a Tony), Velma Kelly in Chicago, and Anastasia in Anastasia

True, we haven’t bought our Halloween candy yet, but as loyal fans of the holiday romance genre, we are prepared to start the most wonderful time of the year today. With Hallmark Channel’s annual Countdown to Christmas and Great American Family’s Great American Christmas now in full swing, and Lifetime and other networks loading their sleighs, we’re here to help you choose between the season’s many offerings. Each Thursday, we’ll spotlight the movie that should be at the top of your weekend list and preview why other debuts will make you merry.
THE ONE TO WATCH
Bringing Christmas Home (Premieres Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8 pm on Great American Family)
The holiday movie genre has made a tradition of honoring veterans for their service, and this film is another worthy salute — with mystery and romance to boot. Jill Wagner stars as army intelligence officer-turned-military history professor Caroline, whom antique shop owner Russell (Paul Greene) enlists to help return a recently-acquired WWII dress uniform jacket to the hero’s family in time for Christmas. A love letter and photo found in a pocket sweeten their mission to uncover who this man was, what happened to him after he was listed MIA, and whether he ever reunited with the gal who wrote him endlessly (juicy twist alert!).
Fans of the Mystery 101 franchise will enjoy seeing Wagner play another smart sleuth. But beyond that, she’s riveting in the scenes where Caroline, who’s trying to adjust to civilian life with help from her army buddy Alton (Simon Arblaster), recounts a Christmas Eve they spent in the desert. As always, Greene’s vibe is as warm and soothing as a cup of cocoa. You believe that Russell would be chill enough to leave his plucky sister Jules (Jess Brown) alone at their store during the holiday rush, and that he’d be patient with Caroline, who’s afraid her past will scare off future happiness. As Caroline points out, not every story has a happy ending; you’ll root for hers to.

Runner-Up: Ms. Christmas Comes to Town
Keep those tissues handy! In our runner-up pick, Ms. Christmas Comes to Town (premiering Thursday, Oct. 26 at 8 pm, repeating Saturday, Oct. 28 at 10 pm on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries), Barbara Niven plays Gale, a beloved host of the Holiday Shopping Channel, who receives a terminal diagnosis and decides to retire — but not before taking her “Ms. Christmas” act on the road for a farewell tour. She wants to train Amanda (Erica Durance), the daughter she never had, to be her on-air successor, Ms. Holiday. And since Gale is hiding her illness, she makes Travis (Brennan Elliott), the nurse traveling with them, pull a double shift as Mr. Winters. It’s great to see Niven, a scene-stealer in the network’s Hannah Swensen movies, take center stage. She and Durance have co-starred before, so their affection for each other feels real, as do their eventual tears. Just know the movie brings tidings of comfort and joy, not sorrow.
The Best of the Rest…
Mystic Christmas (premieres Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8 pm on Hallmark Channel) When globe-trotting marine veterinarian Juniper (Jessy Schram) spends the holidays in Mystic, Connecticut helping her college roommate Candace (Patti Murin) rehab Peppermint the harbor seal, it’s also a chance for Juniper to reignite her spark with Candace’s brother, George Bailey-esque pizza restauranteur Sawyer (Chandler Massey). Schram and Massey have the weekend’s winningest chemistry, and you’ll definitely want to add a boat parade to your yuletide itinerary after this.
Christmas By Design (premieres Friday, Oct. 27 at 8 pm on Hallmark Channel) In need of inspiration for a Christmas Eve fashion show/contest, luxury designer Charlotte (Rebecca Dalton) reluctantly heads home and agrees to attend the town’s “Elfcapades” events with mechanic/mannequin Spencer (Jonathan Keltz). In exchange, the thoughtful, handsome widower gets a buffer between him and the local single ladies whose engines he rightfully revs.
Joyeux Noel (premieres Sunday, Oct. 29 at 8 pm on Hallmark Channel) Two newspaper colleagues, green idealist Lea (Jaicy Elliot) and seasoned Grinch Mark (Brant Daugherty), are sent to France to unearth the untold love story behind a popular painting of a holiday market where, legend says, people meet their soulmates. As they retrace the enigmatic artist’s steps…well, you can guess!
Journey to Christmas (premieres Sunday, Oct. 29 at 8 pm on Great American Family) Kindhearted model Cali (Ash Tsai, charming even when delivering the weekend’s most stilted dialogue) embarks on a cross-country road trip with hired driver Jack (Joey Heyworth), who took the gig to avoid spending the holidays with his family and ex-fiancée. Unfortunately, a storm strands them in Illinois with his relatives. Unsurprisingly, it’s the diversion they both needed.

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in Carol (Todd Haynes, 2015)
Cast: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Kyle Chandler, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, John Magaro, Cory Michael Smith, Kevin Crowley, Nik Pajic. Screenplay: Phyllis Nagy, based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith. Cinematography: Edward Lachman. Production design: Judy Becker. Film editing: Affonso Gonçalves. Music: Carter Burwell.
With her Mamie Eisenhower bangs and heart-shaped face, Rooney Mara in Carol becomes the reincarnation of such '50s icons as Audrey Hepburn, Jean Simmons, and Maggie McNamara -- particularly the McNamara of The Moon Is Blue (Otto Preminger, 1953), that once-scandalous play and movie about a young woman who defies convention by talking openly about sex while retaining her virginity. It's just coincidence that Carol is set at the end of 1952 and into 1953, the year of the release of The Moon Is Blue, but the juxtaposition of McNamara's Patty O'Neill and Mara's Therese Belivet seems to me appropriate because the 1950s have become such a touchstone for examining our attitudes toward sex. Director Todd Haynes and screenwriter Phyllis Nagy, adapting a novel by Patricia Highsmith, have done an exemplary job in Carol of not tilting the emphasis toward Grease-style caricature or Mad Men-style satire of the era, or exploiting the same-sex relationship in the film for sensationalism or statement-making. Carol is a story about people in relationships, clear-sightedly viewed in a way that Therese herself would endorse. After asking her boyfriend Richard (Jake Lacy) if he's ever been in love with a boy and receiving a shocked reply that he's only "heard of people like that," Therese replies, "I don't mean people like that. I just mean two people who fall in love with each other." It's this matter-of-factness that the film tries to maintain throughout its story of Therese and Carol (Cate Blanchett), the well-to-do wife in a failing marriage. That the film is set in the 1950s, when cracks were showing in the conventional attitudes toward both marriage and homosexuality, gives piquancy to their relationship, but it doesn't limit it. The story could be (and probably is) playing itself out today in various combinations of sexual identity. The film works in large part because of the steadiness of Haynes at the helm, with two extraordinary actresses at the center and beautiful support from Sarah Paulson as Abby, Carol's ex-lover, and Kyle Chandler (one of those largely unsung actors like the late Bill Paxton who make almost everything they appear in better) as Carol's husband, the hard-edged Harge Aird. The sonic texture of the 1950s is splendidly provided by Carter Burwell's score and a selection of classic popular music by artists like Woody Herman, Georgia Gibbs, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Perry Como, Eddie Fisher, Patti Page, Jo Stafford, and Billie Holiday.
