the shining-bronze cuckoo is a small cuckoo native to australia, new zealand, and surrounding islands. they primarily feed on insects caught in flight, with a preference for moths. the sexes are similar, but females’ heads and necks have a purple sheen and have deeper brown barring. these birds are nest parasites, and do not raise their own young. they lay a single egg in the nest of a host parent, removing one of the brood’s preexisting eggs. when the cuckoo chick hatches, it will displace other baby birds from the nest almost immediately, gaining the undivided attention and feeding from the host species. they commonly invade grey warbler nests; in one study, up to 55% of nests were taken over by shining-bronze cuckoos.

The Glorious Complexity and Mysteries of Galls, Wasps, Ants, and Aphids
Plant galls are structures of plant tissue that grow in response to the actions of arthropods, bacteria or fungi. These living things hijack the plant and "make" it grow something they find useful.
Tumblr media
An "oak apple" type gall created by a parasitic wasp by laying an egg in the leaf as it was growing.
Tumblr media
The shapes and structures of galls vary wildly, and often have no obvious correspondence to any of the other parts of the plant. (If you you have a strong trypophobia response be careful googling images of galls some make my crawl, others are etherial)
Tumblr media
Some galls seem to be optimized to foil parasitoids who try to lay their eggs inside the pupae of other insects. A wasp would need a very long ovipositor to get to this larva suspended in the center! Somehow the wasp egg induces the tree to grow this complex structure! Amazing!
Tumblr media
Although ants are closely related to wasps who play a large roll in the formation of plant galls, ants are *normally* only secondary fauna of galls and not gallmakers.
Tumblr media
This is surprising to me since so many plants roll out a welcome mat for ants: extrafloral nectaries as cafeterias, hollow stems& thorns as dormitories. A resident colony of ants can be a plants personal private security detail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For all the many symbiotic parings of ants and plants there are only a few ants that induce their own galls. As secondary fauna of galls (often created by their creepy cousins, the parasitoid wasps) ants may also act as pest control.
Tumblr media
This raises the question: Could plants "allow" gall wasps to make these otherwise energy intensive and potentially harmful structures in hopes of attracting ants as secondary guests? It's a complex web of ecological relationships! Read more here.
Another potential player in this story of galls and wasps and ants are aphids. Aphids are the other main insect that can induce galls. The aphids live in these galls for generations (they don't live long so this is only several months) Of course, ants are famous farmers of aphids.
(Some gallmaking wasps get attacked by hyper parasitoid wasps who only lay their eggs in other gall wasps galls. To prevent this some gallmakers make the galls attractive to ants... who can deter the invaders.)
Glorious Complexity!

Little thing on parasites for my hyperfixation
(INFO GATHERED FROM CDC WEBSITE)
What is a parasite?
Any organism that feeds off of another (different species usually) in order to survive. This can be both internal and external, but most are internal. The host, or species the parasite is benefiting off of or harming, never benefits from this and can be damaged from being the victim of the parasite. In this form, we are mostly talking about their effect on humans, so humans are always the host in the examples below unless specified.
What are the main sub-classes?
Protozoa
Traits- microscopic, single celled, able to multiply in humans, often transferred through a fecal-oral route or contaminated water. Some travel through insects such as mosquitoes as well for one's that are inside blood and tissue. They can live on their own or be parasitic.
Infectious subclasses- sarcodina, mastigophora, ciliophora, sporozoa
Helminths
Traits- large, multi celled, most times visible in their adult stages, and cannot multiply in humans. They can live on their own or be parasitic.
Worm subclasses- Flatworms, thorny head worms, roundworms
Ectoparasites
Traits- can be visible most times, living organisms like insects, mostly relate to human skin (burying or attachment), and very broad class. This includes arthropods. They can either just be parasitic in nature or can carry diseases with them such as malaria or lyme disease.
Specific species- ticks, fleas, lice, mites, and mosquitoes (but those aren’t officially recognized as much)
Parasitic infections
So, these aren’t really parasites, but they are classified as a subtype because they are diseases often spread by parasites (most often ectoparasites). They are less parasites on their own and more often results of being the host to a parasite or the disease that is more likely to kill you than the parasite itself. More of a symptom than the actual cause, but still deadly in its own right and needs to be taken into account.
Examples- malaria, head lice, toxoplasmosis, trichomoniasis, etc.

I stumbled on something awesome...
Tumblr media
Not that!
This:
Tumblr media
As I was scavenging streaming sites, I came upon this peculiar animation that I went into with no prior knowledge. And I dare say that's EXACTLY how it's meant to be watched.
You should crash land into this storyline and experience the disorienting environment in ignorant tandem with the characters you'll be stuck with.
[SPOILERS]
Tumblr media
This show is basically an adult Sci-fi/horror darkside Studio Ghibli with a dash of the movie Annihilation.
Scavenger's Reign was made for those who not only like a grotesque horror element added to their entertainment but also for those who want to philosophize and draw parallels to our very real nature. It's an ode to planetary organisms that are governed by an unforgiving food chain.
However, on planet Vesta, humans can be found at the very bottom.
Tumblr media
[THEIR BOND]
Tumblr media
Kamen & the Hollow were by far the most chaotic and dangerous symbiosis that came from their accidental meeting. They were also the most interesting to decipher.
The Hollow is a formidable force. Telepathic and telekinetic, there's no doubt the species are capable of dominating every other life form.
...so why haven't they?
Tumblr media
Vesta went mostly undisturbed in its life cycle until the Demeter survivors crash landed. The Hollows had only shared symbiosis (telepathic bonds) with lesser cognitive species that fulfilled their needs. It wasn't until our monster Hollow attempted telepathy with Kamen that it become more...well...human.
Greedy and insatiable, angry and violent, ambitious and selfish, grief...
Kamen's emotions and toxicity was at its most potent and well...you are what you eat, right? Or rather, you are what you share a telepathic bond with. And the deeper their bond grew, the more corrupted our monster hollow became.
[OKAY I'LL SHUT UP]
Tumblr media
Dude, there's so much to unpack here, but mainly, I wanted to get my thoughts out on the Hollow & Kamen. Maybe I can do more posts on my favorite moments and creatures.
My ADHD:...nah.

Haha, I was curious, I wanted to know how Escáloz looked controlled by Phatos, the parasitic character of @snowsupply 😁, I couldn't leave it behind 😁… Poor Escáloz 😭. The worst thing is that the infection is mutating in him 😱.

The life cycles of parasitic nematodes begins when dormant eggs recognize specific compounds secreted by the plant root (Figure 23.33). (...) As a result, the cell walls break down and neighboring cells are incorporated into a syncytium (see Figure 23.33A). (...) Roots infected by root knot nematodes form large cells, resulting in the establishment of the characteristic knot or gall, which also remains in close contact with the vasculature and provides the nematode with nutrients (see Figure 23.33B).

Thinking about parasites.... Being such a good little breeding ground for you to cultivate whatever specimens you most want to collect, no matter the damage to my body. Every part of me being infected, parasites in my brain, my intestines, my heart.... Maybe even my reproductive organs 👉👈
Sorry for taking so long, life been a bitchhh.
But dear lord, wouldn't that be cute? Seeing you all bloated and helpless as I have you injest capsule after capsule of parasite eggs. Just imagining them swelling inside of you is quite arousing. Just a marvel and great breeding ground! I do quite like roundworms, but I think my work collection might need to spread out with tapeworms, ringworms, and other parasites. Maybe some larva eggs that will travel up your blood stream to that pesky thinking brain of yours too! There are a plethora of parasites.. let's see how long you last, my pet.
