A thing I noticed about Newt and Hermann
When we learn that Newt and Hermann have "sides" of the lab, Hermann is positioned on the left side of the room; Newt on the right side:
Tumblr media
Their respective sides of the room appear to be separated by a yellow line - one which they obviously did not put there themselves, but effectively adopted as a boundary marker.
Newt is a little stinker about the whole thing and lets his stuff sprawl out over the line quite a bit:
Tumblr media
Hermann apparently tolerates the tables and trays, but the kaiju viscera - the physical symbol of one of Newt's biggest passions right now - is not allowed. He shoves it back over to Newt's side of the room.
And then we all knows what happens next: Newt does his kaiju drift experiment, and Hermann sees just how determined Newt is to gain intel that will help them fight the kaiju. Knowing that Newt would get hurt in a second drift, he offers to drift with him so he won't be taking the entire brunt of the hivemind again. In doing so, Hermann is opening himself up to Newt - he's allowing Newt to see and feel anything that passes through his mind during the drift, including some painful childhood memories.
At the end of the film, we see Hermann and Newt standing in LOCCENT, once again positioning Hermann on the left and Newt on the right:
Tumblr media
And then! We see Hermann scoot over toward Newt's side of the screen:
Tumblr media
WATCH OUT LITTLE GERMAN BOY, NEWT'S SIDE OF THE SCREEN IS FULL OF GRABBENHUGGEN... Oh! Oh, he LIKES it!!!
Tumblr media
So! Hermann has gone from (symbolically) pushing Newt away, to taking the initiative in approaching Newt physically, emotionally, and presumably intellectually.
I think, then, that it would be very thematically appropriate if what followed was Hermann sitting down with Newt, and asking him to tell him about kaiju biology and what his favorite monster movies are and why, and listening with absolute appreciation for everything Newt says.

Hey Pacific Rim fans, ready for something interesting?
Today I was looking at screencaps of Hannibal Chau's apothecary, and it clicked that the shopkeeper has something kinda interesting going on with his design. Here's a picture if you need a refresher on what he looks like:
Tumblr media
(Thanks, movie-screencaps.com!)
Like Hannibal Chau, he wears a pair of round sunglasses. But where Hannibal Chau wears reds and golds, the shopkeeper wears black, white, gray, and violet.
Now as you might recall, there's a big fucking sunburst in the middle of the processing room behind the secret passageway. Hannibal Chau has some kinda solar motif goin' on:
Tumblr media
So if Hannibal Chau is in some sense the sun, then perhaps the shopkeeper, a sort of pale reflection of Hannibal Chau himself clothed in nighttime colors, is the moon. (Perhaps that's also why they wear round sunglasses - to suggest the shape of the sun and the moon?)
Tumblr media
Also, just to see if there was anything there, I went and looked up the entry on the moon in Man Myth and Magic - An Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Supernatural, the encyclopedia set that Guillermo del Toro: At Home With Monsters informs us that he read as a child.
A few lines stick out in particular:
In a number of legends, the moon is regarded as male, and the 'Man in the Moon' is said to have a lustful attraction for all females…
Among certain tribal communities the moon is regarded as a lecherous male who roams the earth…
Now as you probably remember, the first thing this guy does in the movie is ask Newt if he's come to buy some kaiju bone powder. For, you know, male potency. He even claims he takes it himself.
This is another one of those things that I can't prove, and I'm not saying Guillermo del Toro absolutely must have done this on purpose, because it's surprisingly easy for thematic serendipity to emerge when you're writing. But given what an immense nerd del Toro is, I really, really have to wonder!

Have you seen Pacific Rim? Which Overwatch characters do you think would be Drift Compatible? (Able to mentally pilot a giant mecha together)
I have watched Pacific Rim but it has been awhile since I've watched it, mostly because I don't really watch Kaiju movies and media, so I needed to refresh on the plot and stuff.
So after doing some research I think I have a good enough understanding to answer this.
First things first, I immediately think that D.Va would be Drift Compatible with either D.Mon and Dae-hyun. D.Va and D.Mon were in the same gaming team together and knew eachother long before MEKA, it's why their callsigns have the same style. As for Dae-hyun, though I don't think he'd ever get into a Jaeger (he is a mechanic in canon) I think he and D.Va would be compatible on the count that he and D.Va are childhood friends. These two are people who have known Hana for a long time and would be able to adapt to her fighting style, and vice-versa.
The other people I immediately thought of were Jack, Gabe and Ana. A big part of those threes story as a whole is about how well they all worked together, without Ana and Gabe, Jack is impulsive. Without Gabriel and Jack, Ana is reclusive. Without Jack and Ana, Gabriel flies off the handle. Also from what I've seen knowing what the other person is going to do is key when it comes to being Drift Compatible, which is something that all three of them can do. It even actively stated with Jack and Reyes.
Now the next ones are Cassidy, Genji, Angela and Fareeha. Now the reason I think this is less because of how they fight together and more to do with their personal relationships. Cassidy and Pharah haven't been in regular contact in years yet when he comes back they fall into what their dynamic has always been, they see each other as family and it's implied that Cassidy was the one to teach her how to shoot, they are insanely close and they both understand each other on a level that many other characters can't say the same for. The same goes with Cassidy and Genji, Genji is one of the few characters that actually pick up on the fact that Cassidy, isn't doing that great. They both knew each other during the worst parts of their lives and helped each other during those times. Again the same can be said for Angela + Pharah and Genji + Angela. And even if we haven't seen much of Genji and Pharah's dynamic I think they would be Drift Compatible too.

Autism & Guillermo del Toro
While some light research of "Guillermo del Toro autism" doesn't get many results, other than complaints and praise for The Shape of Water, it is apparent that many of his characters are autistic.
Aurora || Cronos (1993)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aurora is near-mute, but has a lot of agency despite this. She isn't afraid to kill a bug or help Jesus defeat De la Guardia. In fact, she's the main heroine of our story, despite her silence. She shows intense feelings, especially of love for her grandfather, shown in scenes such as where she reaveals shes ripped the head off her beloved teddy bear to put the Cronos device inside. She's incredibly smart for her age and very capable, but I believe her (maybe not optional, but definitely not permanent) silence is vindictive of her autism. I cannot figure out what her special interest would be, though.
Chuy || Mimic (1997)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chuy is another one of Guillermo del Toro's strong children. Shown first playing spoons incredibly skillfully and crafting creatures out of wire, Chuy has unique interests. He can tell the exact type of shoe down to the size because of his grandfather, and he has the ability to perfectly mimic the Judas' cry. He's nearly silent but not always, and he seems unaware of the rules of the world, leaving his home and entering the subways seemingly unaware of the danger. Upon watching a man get sucked into a gutter, he barely reacts. One pivotal scene showing his autism would have to be when he's trapped in the elevator shaft and has a meltdown. He also speaks in a somewhat unique manner. His special interests are obviously playing spoons and shoes.
Ofelia || Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ofelia is yes another child character who shows a lot of agency, going against what practically everyone tells her to follow her own path. But she's also very bookish, obsessed with her fairytales so much she believes anything the fantastic tells her. She crawls through the mud and talks back to adults, keeping a somewhat quiet demeanor otherwise. I believe her special interest is fairtales.
Newt || Pacific Rim (2013)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not a child, but worth mentioning anyways, is Newt. He's obsessed with Kaiju, to the point of drifting with one multiple times (and eventually.. living with one?). He speaks fast and erratically, he knows every indexical fact about Kaiju, and he's obviously insanely smart. He's, however, balanced by his childlike wonder at everything. His love for kaiju is, of course, his special interest.
Tumblr media
Hope you enjoyed my analysis! I'm missing plenty of characters simply because I haven't seen his full repertoire yet! But as an autistic person, I love to find it in everything else!

Now that I've uploaded all the chapters for What Was Three Has Become One, it is time for me to tell you how much thinking I had to go through to get to the final draft.
Heads up, there will be SPOILERS, so if you haven't read the story yet, click here!
So in the final draft, Mav and Ice met in 2019 for the battle against Barb-E (good job me, for making that name up) and they have a year together to get to know each other and develop feelings until the Knifehead incident where (spoilers!) Goose died. Then obviously, they drift apart and don't meet again until 2025.
In the first draft, I actually wrote how they only met briefly in 2019, and is only going to get to know each other on 2025. I wrote 3/4 into that draft before i realized that their relationship wouldn't have enough time to develop, given the third act happens in a span of weeks, and there wouldn't be enough *drama* and *suspense*.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This are actually Mav and Ice's on screen interaction before Knifehead. And while fanfiction doesn't exactly follow story rules to a t, if this was an original novel, it's not enough time to properly introduce the characters to let the readers get attached to them, or to even think that they're compatible with each other. It's just too short.
So I had to go back later and add more scenes with them, turning the draft from 50k to 85k.
(Also, peep the penguin restaurant. It's only mentioned by name, but became a more special place later on.)

So Monday night we watched Pacific Rim.
Then, yesterday we met up with a friend, who mentioned to mr Pancake that Uprising exists. He got curious, so we watched it.
There is so much wrong with that movie.
I'll put a cut here because a) it's Spoilers if you haven't seen either movie, and b) it's a long, long rant.
I would die happily without remembering that movie even existed. So, thank you, friend, for reminding me of it. 😒
First things first, they're ignoring the established lore. On the words of Ron Pearlman, Kaiju bone sells for 500 dollars a pound, so why are there still so many carcasses laying about?
Also, the war ended 10 years ago! Why are Jagers still in production? The whole shebang of the first movie was that the program was ending, and they were given a final shot at the Jagers before the walls were done. The governments didn't want to keep the Jagers then, they sure as fuck wouldn't want to keep them after the war!
(Attack on Titan looking kinda weird.)
And why do they have Jagers strolling around casually? Those things are heavy and expensive to maintain. They would stay in docks until they were needed, make quick work of the Kaiju and return to docking. What's fueling the Mark VI Jagers?
Why wasn't Jake ever even mentioned in the first movie? Where did the kid come from? He just popped up and we gotta swallow it now? And this kid wouldn't be poor! His dad was Marshal Stacker Pentecost, ffs! His sister is Mako Mori! His family are all high ranking war heroes!
Then... There's the kids. The biggest human issue we had in the first movie was actual tension between the GROWN UP pilots, who were dealing with the apocalypse incoming their way. Now, we have kids fighting over who's getting the top bunk.
And don't (please do) get me started on the drift. First movie? They were all family. We had two Russian siblings, Chinese triplets, father and son, twins... People you already share memories with, what makes it easier to drift.
The second movie? They tossed a bunch of random kids together and expected them to drift on day fucking one! Not even Mako and Raleigh managed to drift on day one, and he was ready to give her the world the second she showed up. They actually spent time together before attempting to drift. Talked. Got to know eachother for a couple days.
Yes, sure, there was the impending apocalypse knocking at their doors so they had to speed run a drift compatibility. But it made it believable. The cadets on Uprising didn't have to deal with the world ending.
That Chinese lady? Boss, have the whole "I hate repeating myself" thing? Did they want to divert us into thinking she was the BBEG when Newt (Charlie Day, my second favourite character in the first movie) was acting completely out of character and LITERALLY DATING A FUCKING KAIJU BRAIN? LIKE THAT WASN'T INCRIMINATING ENOUGH?
[deep breaths] ok. I'm calm.
And did they want the boss lady to be a strong female character? She was annoying. They already had a strong female character. Yes. Mako Mori.
I'm honestly glad she died when she did, before they had the chance to destroy her character for good.
And why did they present the solution (Jagers still in commission) then the problem (Obsidian Avenger/return of the Kaijus) to justify the solution?
It's been 10 years since the war! The world wouldn't still be in shambles!
I would have liked that movie if:
"look, we built some Jagers again to put as a display/just in case, and transformed the Shatterdome into a wartime museum."
"oh no. The Kaijus are back! Who can help us now?"
Tumblr media
Put together a ragtag band of fighters, trained by Mako and Raleigh (happily married, thank you. Also, please feel free to send some fluff fics of them my way), and they have to help new pilots to find their way into the drift. There would be a lot of awestruck new pilots, being like "omg, we're being trained by them!", while others are like "what do you know? Your war is over." And they have to wrangle the kids to get a fighting force to go and destroy the Kaijus.
That would make it a better movie. Not necessarily a good one, but one where we're willing to suspend our disbelief and fall back into the amazing lore of Pacific Rim.
Yes. I like the lore of Pacific Rim. Sue me.
ETA: it was such a bad movie, I only remember the names of two characters, Mako because Mako, and Jake, because he's supposed to be the main character.

Let's talk about what's going on with Hermann here.
So y'all probably remember this Iconic Moment in Pacific Rim:
Tumblr media
In this scene Stacker Pentecost is telling the fellas about how he made a deal with black market dealer Hannibal Chau so he could supplement the shatterdome's meager budget, because the PPDC sucks that way.
Up to this point, Hermann's general behavior around Pentecost suggests that he saw him as basically the Ideal Authority Figure; a man of Rules and Protocols. The novelization bio informs us that Hermann relies on order and control to feel safe, and while Alexander Irvine's editing definitely compromised del Toro's intentions on a lot of points (we can see this by comparing the bios he released on Twitter with the bios in the novelization), it's reasonable to think that something was like this the bio del Toro wrote. So it's also reasonable to think that it never really crossed Hermann's mind that Pentecost might bend or break the rules for any reason. (Even though Tendo Choi's bowtie would've been a giveaway if he'd thought about it for more than a few minutes.)
So in this scene, Pentecost reveals that he's actually not the stickler for rules that Hermann thought he was. He's been dealing with the black market and now he's telling Newt to go and talk with a major black market dealer. In this moment Hermann's entire perception of Marshal Stacker Pentecost is radically altered as he essentially realizes that Stacker Pentecost didn't do such a good job of protecting people because he always followed the rules and protocols of the PPDC, but because he chose to break them when the PPDC refused to give the support that he and everyone at the shatterdome needed. And what does Hermann do afterward? He willingly, happily chooses to drift with Newt, that's what. Hermann comes out of this a very changed man: he's realized that following rules and protocols does not protect people, but rather that making conscientious choices protects people. (And arguably, he's also learned that conscientious choices are not always morally pure choices - those black market people are still a dangerous bunch, producing and selling dangerous products.) What all of this means is that Hermann is going to be a very different person going forward - and luckily for Newt, a much more relaxed person overall. (No more petty complaints to HR, that's for sure!)

I think about this whenever I see people assume that because the PPDC produced the Jaegers which happen to be useful for punching kaiju means the PPDC is supposed to be considered unquestionably just and moral.

My AO3 Wrapped 2023
Welcome to my AO3 Wrapped 2023, where I take a look at some of my favourite fics from 2023 (one bookmark per month).
There were so many amazing fics in 2023, so many new people and friends I met because of fanfic <3 So here’s to a very good 2024, full of words and worlds!
Let’s go to the fics:
January-
The Fine Line Between Hormones and Home by seekingmoonscapes (Bad Buddy: The Series)
In an almost canon universe where the only difference is that it is omegaverse, Pat is an omega, and Pran is an alpha. And during one of his heats, Pat is at home, and decides to ask Pran for a shirt with his scent to help with his heat. But instead, he asks Pran for help in other ways. Fic where the porn IS the plot, everything is super consensual, and sexy and hot. Alternating POV, so on Pran’s pov we get to see all the pining.
February -
If Never Again, If Every Day by gallifreyburning and takiki16 (The Old Guard)
This fic was wonderful from beginning to end. For reasons, 2021 Nicky goes back in time to Jerusalem and his first death at Yusuf's hands. Meanwhile, 1099 Nicolò goes forward in time to 2021 and meets Joe. It's heartbreaking and loving and funny and so full of love. Nicky and Joe miss each other even when around their younger versions. But the love they feel for each other is stronger than that. Wonderful story, happy ending.
March -
Wooing the Water Tribe by lenaballena (ATLA) @dameferre
Sokka has been living in the Fire Nation as Zuko's second in power and his best friend and everything. When Katara comes to visit, Sokka thinks Zuku is courting her. And he realizes he is also in love with his best friend. Lots of pining. There's absolutely no courting of Katara. It's also really funny. My heart broke for Sokka at some moments.
April -
The Grand Unified Theory of Shen Qingqiu by 00janeblonde (SVSSS)
WIP - This story is all fluff and no angst, like the tags say, slice of life and it's wonderful. SQQ dies at Maigu Ridge, and is offered to acquire the Game Plus, where he can go back to the past with his cultivation and memory intact, and try again. Doing that he discovers that he is actually the real Shen Jiu reincarnated, and he can try to recover memory markers to be able to restart the "game" even before than when he first "transmigrated". His friendship with YQY becomes strong, LQG also becomes his friend (it's really sweet how he wants his friends back). Everything is very soft. Absolutely great teacher SQQ.
May -
but for me, there is a storm by Authoress (Haikyuu!!) by @kiribakus
An epic pacific rim au. Hinata and Kageyama are both cadets who want to be Jaeger pilots, but they cannot get along. So they work really hard because they are their last hope to pilot a one of a kind Jaeger - a Kaiju/Machine hybrid. They solve their problems in the beginning (and then later they have more problems). Hinata and Kageyama are not the only main characters, other characters are also very important and have their own storyline and pov. This story is heartbreaking as well. There's MCD, and it made me cry so hard I got puffy eyes. It's a wonderful read, and very well written.
June -
The UA Analyst Kid by RogueVector (BNHA)
Izuku meets the UA teachers before getting OFA and they see how good his analysis is, so they start to train him (together with some other heroes). But some things don't change and Izuku still meets All Might and gets offered OFA. This story is funny, sweet and with amazing relationships. Izuku is OP with his intelligence and training. All the teachers and heroes are so supportive and good. A really feel good story.
July -
Deku? I think he’s some pro… by Clouds (BNHA)
After All Might told Izuku he can't be a hero, he finds himself in a forum used by some underground heroes and offers his analysis to them, since he can't be a hero, he will help them. The underground heroes think Izuku is some kind of retired pro when they ask for help analyzing some villains and all, and when they finally meet face-to-face they all decide to practically adopt Izuku and teach him to fight so he will have a chance to be a quirkless hero. It is amazing! Also, the relationship between Izuku and the underground heroes is more like friends than teacher-student, and it's amazing that way. (some All Might bashing - be warned)
August -
Mobius by Foxquills (BNHA) @fox-quills
WIP - I love this story so much!!! Third-year Izuku is sent to the past because of a quirk accident, to the time both Shouta and Hizashi are third year students at UA. Problem is, according to Nedzu, time is constant, or a loop, so he can’t change anything in the past, and everything that has happened, will happen again. He becomes fast friends with both Shouta and Hizashi, and starts crushing on them as well. Both Hizashi and Shouta also start crushing on him. It is lovely. There’s pain. It’s awesome. (also omegaverse).
September -
Factory Settings by Anonymous (Good Omens)
Post season 2 au, because Crowley follows Aziraphale to heaven. Things happen, and instead of Crowley, there is Raphael, without any memory of all the time he's lived as Crowley. Heaven and Hell are at it again. Aziraphale has no idea what to do, and he misses his Crowley. Muriel is a sweetheart. Both Aziraphale and Crowley/Raphael povs. Great story, feels very much canon.
October -
Justice in Defiance by Foxquills (BNHA) @fox-quills
WIP - Aizawa is a hero turned villain who kills both heroes and villains alike. And one day Izuku finds him right after he kills someone. They fight. And now Izuku needs to know more. What made Aizawa turn????? To do that, he will also need Hizashi in his corner. Absolutely lovely story!!!! The povs are amazing. The feelings and pining are perfect.
November -
If I Must Starve (Let it be in Your Arms) by Igneum807 (The Witcher)
So think about the softest story involving Jaskier and touch-starved witchers, and this is the result. During his travels alone, when he and Geralt go their different ways for a few weeks, Jaskier meets Geralt's brothers, who are just as touch and companionship-starved as Geralt was before meeting Jaskier. It's super soft and tender.
December -
Cultivate: Slow Life on a Monster-Infested Mountain by NeonGhostCat (SVSSS) @neonghostcat
When SY transmigrates, the System tries to put him on SQQ's body, but SQQ is aware and is able to stop it from happening. The System then gives SY his own body, but something goes wrong with the system and SY is decided to not get involved with the plot, or with Cang Qiong Sect, and specially SQQ. He finds an abandoned mountain, with an abandoned house there and decides to stay there until he is strong enough if SQQ finds him and wants to kill him. Obviously things cannot be that simple. Now he is stuck on the mountain he can't get out of, every full moon night there are monster attacks and one day LQG appears on the Mountain, how can he get out of helping with the plot now? Shen Yuan is absolutely perfect on this fic. I love how he deals with the mountain and its beasts and plant-life. Liushen is the softest you'll see. Slow burn, super domestic, feel good story.
~
Enjoy your readings!

ngl one of the reasons i love ofmd fandom is because it is VERY difficult not to center ed and his experiences and perspectives in analysis of the show, and to a biiiig extension, fanworks. I have been in so many fan communities where that SHOULD have been true, where it should be impossible to not center characters of color, And Yet Fandom Finds A Way
(pacific rim fandom, overwatch fandom, i'm looking at your bitch asses)
but in OFMD, Ed is inescapable. Oluwande and Roach and Frenchie and Fang and Ivan are all, to varying degrees, inescapable. not just loveable, but beloved, and enmeshed in the fandom. this is not about to be a sleepy hollow situation and that's a relief.
