Only Yesterday

I just finished watching this movie after hesitating a lot of times whether I should watch it or not but I am glad that I did. These will just be a mix of my thoughts about some aspects of the story and the movie itself. Personally, I haven’t been feeling all too well recently, feeling lost and stuck. Like Taeko, I longed for something different and was unsure about certain things in my life. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. More than I thought I would. I love Ghibli movies in general especially the fantasy ones but my gosh, this just hits home. It made me question things and left me wanting more. The movie was definitely not ones that have big plot twists or carried anything too significant like how most Ghibli movies are but I really loved how it brings nostalgia and how it relates to me as a woman growing up pressured by expectations of others. Granted, I wasn’t born in that era but it just shows that girls go through the same issues growing up in whatever generation.

I was intrigued at how this movie conveys her stories from her past and how it connects to her thoughts in her present. Definitely she showed herself to be haunted by these memories and she tends to minimise her feelings of her past childhood trauma. All these little events shapes who she is as a person and she was confused about who she was and what she wanted in life. I relate to that so much as I remembered feeling unloved and invalidated about what I wanted in the past especially when it comes to family. She was expected to do things a certain way or else, she would get punished. And when she expressed her frustration, she was being too “dramatic” and was criticised harshly. The parents did seem to show some remorse but the things in the past where her feelings were hurt or confused, she brought those in her present self too. She had to act a certain way or think a certain way, to be nice and to be proper so she can be happy with herself. She wanted to be a star and got discouraged. She had trouble in maths for not understanding division and got ridiculed. Sadly, that is the cultural norm in SEA families. I relate to it so much as I also felt saddened on how people react to my emotions and things that I struggled with as child. I felt the same where all I wanted was help from people. If I didn’t know or wasn’t good at something, I wanted them to help me through it. Of course I never expected them to do it for me but rather guide me so I could understand. They equate me of not understanding things to being plain dumb and that hurt me, as a child and as an adult. I understand how young Taeko feels. No wonder she feels so off balanced in her adulthood. We were conditioned to be something we were not and when we didn’t meet those expectations, we are seen as a disappointment. It really helped me understand my childhood trauma more and it gave me a sense of validation that I wasn’t the only one feeling that way. I felt seen.

I know that romance was not a big aspect of this movie but I really do adore Toshio and how much influence he has on her. I do believe that Toshio has a hard time expressing his feelings and thoughts whenever she confides in him but I love that he validates how she feels about her past and how he doesn’t make it seem that she was over exaggerating for thinking that or not encouraging her to feel as if she is a bad guy for feeling the way she did. Reality is that people aren’t going to like everything you do or who you are as a person and everyone has a dark side but its what you choose to do with those thoughts that matters most. Toshio helps her untangle these complex feelings in his own way. It could seem very inconsiderate or too simple to some people in how he says them but I think that it was conveyed to Taeko perfectly. She didn’t need anyone to debunk whatever she feels but only to understand and help her know that its normal to feel that way. He was never pressuring her unlike how her family was and supported her decisions. I do love the subtlety of their relationship where there were lingering feelings of intimacy and how she realises that it would be nice to think of a future with him. I knew that Toshio definitely liked her since the beginning and was very respectful in terms of not rushing into things. He knew that if she were not interested in him, he could still be friends with her and waited for her to make her move first if she ever did like him back. I enjoyed that. So simple yet so moving. They both are definitely compatible with each other and seem to enjoy each other’s company. I appreciate a realistic love based on feelings of companionship. It was a gradual realisation for Taeko and she really felt at home in the countryside (and with Toshio). The ending to me was more than perfect where you get to see how he actually feels about her, he was surprised but glad to be with her longer. Stumbling into love for each other. It wasn’t a huge ground breaking reunion but it was a gentle feeling like a bud sprouting into something worth growing.

You could see that she was always so uneasy whenever she thinks of her childhood and why she had to bring up her past self sometimes. She feels uncomfortable facing her younger self but at the end, I was touched that she was finally beginning to let her past self motivate her into what she always wanted for her future. She didn’t push away that part of her anymore and uses it to fuel her new found dream. If she wants something, she will go get it. Ah I loved the ending.

Overall, this movie was a blessing for me as it made me slow down and really think about what I wanted. It gave me sweet feelings of nostalgia and helped me to think that I shouldn’t be so hard on myself. My past will always be there but I should celebrate my growth also. I am not the person I was 10 years ago and I shouldn’t expect myself to be stuck thinking that way. Like Taeko, change can be hard but what we plant will be worth it in the end, especially the ones that we take good care in. I, too, can change my mundane and comfortable yellow aspect of my life and turn it into something crimson red in taking my chances in things I am scared to do. Who knows, it could lead to something magical. It doesn’t even have to be anything big but if it gives even an ounce of happiness in my life, I should take it.

All in all, I highly recommend this movie.

Chapter 24 Jake* Part Two

First Date and Another Week

Finally, he arrived at my place to pick me up for our first date, what normally was a five minute drive became twenty five minutes due to traffic. I hop in his car and I’m excited. While we are driving, I look at his center console and see a book regarding Emmanuel Kant, a philosopher. We talk briefly about philosophers, this one in my opinion tells me a lot about him, though he says he doesn’t think Kant’s ideals are sustainable and rather just interesting to think about. Jake* did not have high degrees from college, but is intelligent and well read, there’s more to this book than just the cover.

I had made reservations for my favorite restaurant, Maggiano’s. At the restaurant, it feels like we’ve been together forever, I’m discussing with the waitress that he’s allergic to cheese and making sure that certain items on the menu are okay for him. I order my food and get a glass of wine. Dinner is the opposite of awkward, we are engaged in conversation without a dull moment and happy to be together.

My best friend got word that we were going to our favorite place, so I ask him if it’s okay if we bring her some leftovers of cheesy garlic bread. He’s completely cool about it, so on the way, we stop by my friend’s apartment to give her the food. She meets us outside and meets him briefly. He is a little quiet but otherwise friendly and we chat for a couple minutes before driving off to my place, a few minutes down the street.

We get back to my place to continue hanging out. My dog goes crazy for him, but after a bit, she relaxed so we could focus on each other. I couldn’t tell you what we were watching, we were just cuddling. We kissed not that much, as his beard’s length scratched my face and I told him it was uncomfortable on my face, but that I definitely wanted to kiss him. I at one point brought my dog outside, and upon returning inside I said I didn’t feel good. My Apple Watch said my heart rate was at 160 bpm, insanely high for me, and I laid back down on the couch. Again, a caring man to the rescue. He tells me to relax there and he will get anything I need and not get up. He gets my dog and brings her back inside, he brings me a drink, I’m waited on hand and foot. I feel better with him around. We spoke about a lot that night of course, but I remember him telling me about him having deleted Hinge and I was the only one he was talking to. Although things so far had felt pretty deep, I was still super surprised he had dropped everything, seemingly, to be with me. I of course had done the same, but for my own reasons. I had talked about Jake* to my best friend and in talking with her I made a deal that if things with him didn’t work out, I would cease dating around until a vaccine comes out/COVID is more or less over.

Meanwhile, outside of my head, he touches my leg and I admit that I have become rather *excited* by being with him in person, our chemistry is just as good in person. He starts to finger me, I tell him to be careful because I wouldn’t want my heart rate to increase again. Strangely, I let him continue and my heart rate goes down. Upon taking a break, this man takes his hand and puts his fingers in his mouth, tasting it. I laugh at him and call him a freak but he laughs too. He too is turned on and he asks me if I want to touch him. I say that I am afraid his claims of being a shrimp are true. Curiosity gets the best of me and over his pants, I touch him and say “oh okay.” I know enough that he is not small. Besides that, nothing happens, as due to my heart issues, I have told him that I want to wait until I’ve seen a cardiologist and make sure it is safe for me to be participating in “cardio.” I ask him if he wants to sleep over, because I want to spend time with him now that I can, and because sexually I am tempted and almost want to just see what happens. He says no. We stop fooling around and just hang out together for another bit of time before he starts to get a headache and becomes really tired. It is then time to leave and agree that we will both have to masturbate later tonight due to our forbidden sex.

The next day, I am off to test drive a potential new car. We text during my experience there while I’m waiting and I share my news of the new car and the not so great experience at another dealership trying to take care of my old car. He talks about how he felt off due to his headache/tiredness and is seeing a doctor Monday:

I remind him of the activities we DID do, and that obviously I definitely was feeling it. It’s bizarre to me that he still holds uncertainty for my growing feelings of him.

He is talking about me to his family, I know because he mentions his mother “keeps asking” about me, “will I get to meet this one?” He jokes about telling her I’m 10 years older than him. I say “yeah we just had our first date last night so I should meet your mom tomorrow.” “Exactly.” He now claims he is bored, I ask if he’s bored or if he just wishes I was there. Again, an “exactly.” I get real again.

He decides to take a nap before watching football with his family. He says he is coming back after dinner and asks to come over. I say absolutely and he sends an emoji surrounded by hearts. More or less, he appears at my door maybe 45 minutes later. I did not notice at first, but he had shaved so that his beard was more like stubble. He called me out for not noticing, but upon kissing him and touching his face I told him it was a lot better and I could actually kiss him now without hurting myself.

I do not really remember much about that night or what we did as much as our first date, besides what I am about to describe. Again, he played with me, I touched him, and it got to a point where I finally said, “ok let’s have sex now,” caught by surprise he said “what?” I reiterated I wanted to have sex with him and go to my bedroom. He said he didn’t have condoms, I told him I did. That was that. Shrimp definitely was NOT a shrimp, when we were actually at the point of penetration, it felt a lot bigger. I did not climax but enjoyed myself, and he was attentive, gentle, and communicative. As a joke, he said “good girl” to me, referencing my story to him regarding Dan*. I laughed and playfully nudged him. Similar to Ethan*, compatible sex can only grow feelings. We cuddle, re-clothe, and return to the couch for a while. When he leaves I verify he’s reached home safely before passing out.

In the morning we text each other our good mornings and I tell him I’m glad we didn’t wait. He mentions how great it was and that he’s turned on by thinking about it. I tell him the options of masturbation, bringing “that dick over here,” or a cold shower. Jokingly he says the latter before sending a follow up “just kidding.” He is taking a shower before coming over. I too am going to take a shower, so I let him know the door is unlocked. I hear the front door opening as I am finishing up my shower. I yell out to him that I’m in the shower and he comes to my room. More or less since I’m already naked, we go straight to business. He ate me out, as that is something that he really enjoys doing before having sex. We spend more time together before I more or less kick him out since a plumber is supposed to come by and I am getting my hair done.

Later on, we have a conversation about condoms, he expresses it’s difficult to stay erect with them and I let him know that later down the line we don’t have to use it because of my IUD. He says “Look we’ll stop using them when YOU want to.” I describe to him I am not a fan of them necessarily but the pros and cons. We have more sex talk then immediately segue to sports. I joke that he had better luck with his sports bets before we started having sex. He claims no sex until the end of football season, with another quick “jk.” I am told I wouldn’t make it, I respond that he wouldn’t make it. At this point, we have seen each other three days in a row. I express to him again that I like him.

Monday comes along and both of our appointments go well more or less. They’ve found an abscess in his tooth and he was about to get a root canal to clean it out that day. He mentions he’s driving by my work. For some reason he didn’t think I was there, so missed the opportunity for him to have stopped by. Later that day, I finally feel confident enough to start showing off his Instagram to my co-workers and show them this guy I’ve been talking to. Upon showing one coworker his photo, she says “wait…. I know him!” Turns out she went to middle school and high school with him; they were friends in middle school before he started being a bad boy in high school. My other coworker keeps yelling as a joke that she and I are Eskimo sisters.

We make a plan Tuesday for him to help me swap out my cars, a very nice gesture I appreciate. Consistently he let me know his head is bothering him, an ailment that plagues him constantly. At this point, I don’t have his address, despite him having had mine for a while. I pick him up and we take care of the swap. After the swap, we go back to my place and I flip flop about what we are gonna eat for dinner. Finally, decide on Outback Steakhouse. I insist on paying to thank him for helping me today, something he has never had a girl do for him.

Not much in between, we spend Wednesday night together again and have a sleepover scheduled for Thursday. Wednesday he says something about seeing me in 11 business days, which for whatever reason rubs me kind of the wrong way. When Thursday comes, he, unfortunately, bails since he isn’t feeling good. Friday I made a joke about seeing him for 11 business days. I had promised to give him Hulu logins and a profile, I just needed to get to his place. I mention I am watching the new episode of The Boys on Amazon Prime, we have inside jokes about it, quoting lines like “lazer my tits” and later, “Fuck Fresca.” He gets “upset” that I watched it without him (I did not know we were supposed to watch things together). I asked “was I supposed to wait for you lol,” he says he thought that we would watch it together while eating lunch together. Also didn’t know we were getting lunch together. I came over, watched the episode again, and then we went to McAllister’s for lunch. When we are at his place, we get into sexcapades, with sex brain logic, I decide now is good enough to no longer use condoms. Not to be sketchy at all, and he mentions he feels bad shooing me away after sex, but he has to pack and get ready to stay at his parents’ for the weekend. He plans on Sunday that he is gonna come back after a 1pm football game, and wants to make me dinner at my place. He used to be a sous chef and is quite a talent at that, so out of everything and anything that I could want or have from a real chef, all I want is sloppy joes. We go back and forth on different real dishes he could make, risotto, chicken marsala with pasta, but in the end, I end with sloppy joes. I don’t expect really to hear much of him since he is hanging out with his family for the weekend before Sunday. But I am wrong.

Finished So I’m a Spider volume 10. I have...mixed feelings about this one. Under the cut, and no spoilers in comments, as always.

First off: what I liked. I liked the stuff with Kyouya, but that’s a given. His armor-piercing question to Ms. Oka was pretty great. Even if, in a way, when considering his history it comes off as a bit hypocritical, at the same time, it makes complete sense for him as a character. He feels a lot of regret over his violence, and he’s always had a complicated relationship with it, both on Earth and here. For him to see someone treading a similarly complicated, bloody path--of course he’d get angry about it, even if only out of a desire to not inflict that on anyone else.

Also, his reactions to not reacting gave me feels. Oh Kyouya, you’re so traumatized! ;-; Poor kid.

I swear this series is just trauma central for everyone. Kyouya, Mera, Ariel, Oka, Shun, Yuri, Hyrince, now Asaka and Kunihiko, and even Kumoko/Wakaba at several points! And more people besides that! They’re all traumatized! I swear the only person who isn’t having serious issues with trauma is probably Sophia, and that’s mainly because of Envy fucking with her head. And even with that, her clingy jealous nature is probably at least in part due to her trauma. I can at least see it, anyway.

No, scratch that, the only one who isn’t traumatized is D. Speaking of, I think we got hints that she might literally be the devil? Like, in the chapter where she gets found out and dragged off by that maid. There was a mention of “several circles of hell,” and with her initial and her proclamations of being an evil god, the devil certainly fits. Interesting personality, though. I wouldn’t normally think the devil as having a non-interference policy, but at the same time it kind of makes sense? In the way that it lets people go wild, at least.

Okay, other things I liked...the banter between Wakaba and Ariel was really good, same with Wakaba and D in that chapter I mentioned. I liked that callback to how Oka saved the nameless spider’s life back on Earth--of course her soul would want to care for Oka because of that. Um, that scene between Bloe and Balto was pretty tragic, especially when considering that Bloe is canonically doomed to fail already. Like, we hear that he dies early on in the Demon Lord’s Aide Interludes. Poor Balto, he tried so hard to protect his little brother for it all to be for naught ;-;

Finally, the best part. ENBY DRAGON. They’re consistently referred to with they pronouns and the narration doesn’t designate them as one gender or the other, nor does the character ever clarify, so I’m calling it that they’re an enby. I mean, they purposely chose an androgynous appearance when shifting to a human form. No cis person could ever. I know that this nonbinary pal only showed up for like 2 seconds at the very end, but I would die for them. We stan. I hope we get to see more of them.

Now, stuff I disliked, and why I’m mixed on this book: first, the pacing in the beginning dragged on too much with the exposition. Maybe it was because I kept getting distracted by my family watching the Mandalorian, but I remember feeling the same way even after they stopped and I was able to concentrate more thoroughly. Ususally, there’s a good mix of exposition and action going on, rather than it being all tell, but in the beginning there was a LOT of tell going on with the spy network Wakaba set up and stuff. And there was a little bit in the middle, too, I think. Didn’t like that.

Then, the main thing I don’t like: The implications of Wakaba’s plan. In a way, breaking the system in such a manner would result in what seems to be planetary genocide. She herself comments that it’s a massive amount of death, even if she also implies it wouldn’t be explicitly everyone who dies, but I’m still not super comfortable with that. Also, killing all the elves save Oka. If Potimas is the main big bad, and the reason why the elves are considered a threat, why do they need to kill all of them?

Yes, you can argue he can just latch onto another elf as a new body, but it’s only certain elves, right? I’m willing to bet none of the out-of-the-loop elves fulfill those conditions. Or, at least a majority don’t. They don’t need to die. They can be told the truth and even help oppose Potimas if need be. Those elves only want to help save the world as they understand it--that’s not wrong. That’s not even a crime! They’re just being manipulated like Oka is.

So why do they have to die, too? Furthermore, with the cyborg elves/any other compatible elf, they can have those “feelers” removed. Magically, physically, or whatever. Or even just put Potimas into a position where he can’t latch onto a new body. Like, there must be a range limit, right? I don’t remember if it said there was, but I can double check later. Or, hell, even use his own barrier against him by modifying it somehow. I’m willing to bet those “feeler” things are related in some way to something that could either resemble a skill or exist outside the system. If conjuring exists outside the system, at least with certain things, then you can theoretically conjure a way to force Potimas to be trapped within his own body when he dies.

It’s magic. Wakaba has already shown that you can basically do whatever the fuck you want as long as you have the energy/runes to do it. So just do something like that instead of committing elf genocide.

I mean, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the author before, in terms of how she’s (?) handled tropes. Okina Baba might betray my expectations and end up writing something other than literally killing every last elf save Oka and/or planetary genocide. She handled the goblin concept/design super well, and she’s handled the demon stuff petty well. It didn’t read as antisemitic, and there’s been a consistent pattern of Not Always Chaotic Evil throughout the work.

It would be severely disappointing if this is where her writing fell flat, considering how well she’s handled all the other stuff so far, and I’m honestly not sure if it would ruin the series for me. Probably not completely, as there’s a large amount of material that;s legitimately good and fun, but I would definitely be disappointed.

That’s my feelings on it, at least.

You know, I’ve seen a bunch of complaints about the lack of prominence of non-Rika and Satoko members of the Games Club in Gou, but... is there any reason for the other three to be prominent other than just because we want to see them? Unlike Rika and Satoko, their character arcs are finished:

(Higurashi and also The World God Only Knows spoilers under the cut:)

- Keiichi’s arc is mostly learning to trust his friends, with a side of learning how to put his talents to use to to help his friends inside the system. The former arc is completely resolved by the end of Tsumihoroboshi-hen (and the lesson sticks; Onidamashi-hen does him a bit dirty, but with Rika’s help he does remember), and the latter arc by the first half of Minagoroshi-hen (carried into Tataridamashi-hen).

- Rena’s arc is related to Keiichi’s: it’s okay to ask friends to help with big personal problems. Again, this is resolved by the end of Tsumihoroboshi-hen (pending full answers for Onidamashi-hen - if H173 wasn’t involved there then Gou did her dirty).

- Mion, unlike any of the other Games Club members, doesn’t really have a character arc at all, as fitting the one character who never goes L5 in OG. She basically starts off having already learned the lessons needed to escape Rule X and Rule Z of the OG loops (the former by personality, the latter by virtue of her position), and is functionally a static character whose role is to provide a safe space for other characters (the Club) and access to resources to help everyone escape June 1983.

The one exception here is the “who does Keiichi wind up with?” question, and I think it’s pretty clear from Gou that Ryukishi07 has no intention of ever providing a canon answer to that question. I’m a little dubious about that from a characterization perspective (4-5 years is an awfully long time for teenagers to crush on each other without either getting together or moving on), but it’s a bend rather than a break - I can absolutely buy Keiichi (who was nerdy before moving to Hinamizawa) not really understanding that Mion and Rena want to jump his furry seal for years on end even *before* factoring more restrictive Japanese cultural mores, I can buy Rena pining but not really doing anything for such lengths of time as well, and AIUI Mion (the character most likely to actual take action to resolve the situation) has apparently been living away from the other two for an extended period. Aside from that, though... well, there’s the issue of “why were the club bonds insufficient to prevent the events that lead to Gou and could this have been avoided?” (AFAICT the answers are “friends sometimes grow apart with time” and “no”), and if you moved the timeframe forward a few years I could see a new interesting arc (how would these three characters react to the economic slump of the early Heisei years just as they’re graduating college?), but other than that all three are basically in the same boat as Mion was in OG (only relevant insofar as they can help the other characters who still have arcs solve their problems). They’re less relevant this time around because so far they have no reason to be relevant.

Contrast the other two full members:

- There was already enough hanging Rika threads to support Saikoroshi-hen as an epilogue arc. More importantly, on top of the dangling Seacats connection one of Rika’s key character flaws (a certain kind of selfishness) was never really resolved in OG (Saikoroshi-hen suggested that the loops alleviated it, but never resolved it - and indeed the arc ending can be read as the triumph of that very flaw!)

- Satoko should have learned to not bottle up and try to bear it on her own when she’s having trouble and ask for help just like Rena did (Minagoroshi-hen), so if Gou is as presented she’s been done dirty there (if the mirrored narration theory is correct and Rika is actually in Satoko’s situation then this melts away, mind - in that case the issue is the very same selfishness issue I mentioned in Rika’s section). But her abandonment issues remain, and there was also the old dangling question of “is there a connection between Satoko and Lambdadelta?”.

(Now, that’s not the entire story. There’s one other big dangling plot arc left unresolved by OG Higurashi: the Satoshi situation. That ties into Satoko’s situation; more importantly, it means that there is one occasional Club member whose arc is not quite finished: Shion. Actually, that’s not quite right since Shion’s got two arcs and one is finished in Meakashi-hen (her understandable resentment at her family) - but the other (her love of Satoshi) was left stalled at “I will wait until he wakes up”. Except, of course, for some reason Gou has so far completely avoided covering that dangling plot thread despite the other character most affected by it being the new nominal MC, so Shion has been left in the lurch. The Clinic is coming up next episode (and that one official art does have Satoko holding what looks like Shion’s ribbon), so we’ll see if that changes - but as it is, the dangling Satoshi thread is one of Gou’s biggest flaws, and Shion should really be more prominent in Gou than she has been.)

(You know, this entire argument is reminding me of back when The World God Only Knows was still ongoing, where I called Chihiro as Winning Girl within a day of the chapter that finalized the five goddess host candidates during the Goddess Arc (the Chihiro Incident) - one of the three key reasons was because four of the five girls had a reason for still being plot-relevant, but not the girl who didn’t have a goddess (who was always going to be Chihiro, because Normal Girl is not compatible with being a goddess host)... unless she was Winning Girl. Actually, at least one of the other two reasons also had elements of this, too: I’d recognized that Keima’s character arc was acceptance of the real world and getting together with a girl who wasn’t an eroge archetype was the logical endpoint of this (and by Keima’s own admission that was Chihiro. Somehow large parts of the internet never got the memo; apparently 4chan’s rage was legendary when the final chapter came out. Learn to narrative-fu, people.)

Castiel sits in the corner booth of a small café and waits. He has read through the menu about five times now and now there is nothing for him to do but stare out the window and wonder if every person who passes by is there for him.

He hasn’t been on a date in a while, not since he began the search for his witch. Now that he seems to have found him, his brother Balthazar has decided that he needs to turn his attention back to his love life.

Not that Castiel is certain that he and his witch are a good match yet. He likes Dean and their magic is compatible but he hasn’t yet allowed Dean to learn his name or see his human form. They’re still getting to know each other, building up trust, and Castiel would much rather be focusing on that.

The only reason he agreed to go on this date is because he knows he’s in serious danger of pining after Dean. He is a good looking man, kind and attentive to a fault, but mixing magic and romance is rarely a good idea.

The doors to the café open, catching Castiel’s attention. His heart skips a beat when he sees that it is Dean who has entered. He is dressed in a nice, pale-blue shirt, looking around the café nervously.

He spots Castiel and begins to approach him, and Castiel’s stomach drops when he realizes why Dean is here.

He is Castiel’s blind date.

“Excuse me?” Dean asks. “Are you Casteel?”

“Castiel,” Castiel corrects faintly.

Dean looks him over, brief enough not to feel inappropriate, and smiles. “Hey, I’m Dean.”

He holds out his hand. Castiel takes it, palm tingling at the touch. He has felt Dean’s hand on him before, softly petting his feathers or offering him a comfortable perch. It feels different touching him as a human, more charged somehow, and Castiel knows he’s not the only one who feels that way when Dean’s hand lingers, dropping reluctantly only when Dean takes his seat across from him.

“Not to sound like a cliché, but have we met before?” Dean asks. “You look kind of familiar.”

He’s looking Castiel right in the eye as he says that, and Castiel flushes when he realizes that he recognizes the color.

So much for not pining.

Castiel opens his mouth, fully intending to explain the situation to Dean but something stops him. What if Dean, like him, has been raised to believe that magic and romance don’t mix? What if he’s one of those witches who wouldn’t dream of pursuing their familiar? Some of them do consider it a form of bestiality, as incredibly insulting as that is.

“I don’t think so,” he lies. “I’m certain I would remember.”

He can’t regret laying the lie on so thick when Dean blushes prettily at the compliment, smile turning softer.

“Just getting this out of the way, Balthazar told you that I’m a witch, right?”

Castiel nods, even though Balthazar did nothing of the sort. “What did he tell you about me?”

“Well, he didn’t tell me you were so good looking,” Dean says, and now it is Castiel’s turn to blush. “Didn’t tell me much, really. Just your name, that you are his brother, and that you work at the animal shelter downtown.”

Castiel nods in confirmation. He knows he should tell Dean the truth now, before this goes too far, but he can’t bring himself to do it just yet. He wants the chance to get to know Dean as a human, before Dean’s impression is inevitably colored by the fact that he spends half his time covered in feathers.

The date goes well, near as Castiel can tell. Dean is even more attractive when he is trying to be, all confidence, compliments and teasing grins. He tells Castiel some things he already knows, about his craft and his recently acquired familiar, and some things he didn’t, mostly about his family which he is clearly very fond of.

They finish their lunch and leave the café together. Dean takes Castiel’s hand once they’re outside and Castiel lets him, heart pounding harder when Dean’s fingers intertwine with his own.

“You live close by?” Dean asks.

Castiel nods mutely. He feels a strange mix of flustered and guilty, the two conflicting emotions making his stomach churn unpleasantly.

“Can I walk you home, then?”

Again, Castiel nods. He needs to tell Dean the truth before this date ends, he decides then. Keeping up the deception won’t just affect any potential romantic relationship but their connection as witch and familiar as well.

He takes them the long way home, both wanting to put off an awkward conversation and to hold Dean’s hand just a little bit longer. Eventually, though, they arrive at his doorstep.

“I had fun,” Dean tells him, and the way he says it warm and low makes it feel like more than a routine statement.

“Me too,” Castiel says. He draws in a deep breath. “Dean, I-”

That’s as far as he gets before Dean leans in, kissing him softly. It’s a brief kiss, just barely long enough for Castiel to catch on and begin kissing him back before Dean pulls away.

“Sorry,” he says, licking his lips. “I didn’t mean to interrupt you, I just wanted-”

Castiel cups his cheek and pulls him in, shutting him up with another kiss. They’re both smiling like idiots when they part.

“Wow,” Dean breathes. “Um. I’ll call you?”

“Please do.”

It’s only once Dean is gone that Castiel realizes that he didn’t tell him after all.

That evening, Dean summons him.

They’ve spent more evening together than not lately so it’s hardly a surprise, but it puts Castiel on immediate alert anyway. He takes flight from his living room window with trepidation, too nervous to enjoy it like he usually does.

In too short a time he’s arriving at Dean’s home, landing on a perch in his kitchen that Dean set up shortly after they met.

“Hey,” Dean greets, smiling. He has changed out of his previous outfit into tattered jeans and a faded t-shirt, the kind of clothes more appropriate for potentially messy spell casting. “That was quick.”

Castiel responds with a trill, feeling a rush of pride despite his anxiety.

“How was your day?” Dean asks, smile widening when Castiel replies with another trill. He can’t actually understand Castiel in this form yet but he likes to pretend he does. “Yeah, mine too. I had a date, it went pretty great. Hot guy, looks adorable when he blushes.”

Castiel inclines his head, knowing that if he could blush now he would.

“He had beautiful eyes, too.” Dean gives Castiel a fond look. “Kind of looked like, yours, actually. Who knew I was such a sucker for blue eyes?”

Castiel fidgets, the pleasure at Dean’s flattery turning into heavy guilt. He can’t keep this from Dean any longer.

He shakes his wings, kicking himself off his perch and transforming midair. Dean’s eyes widen, expression going from delighted surprise to recognition to plain shock in moments.

“I enjoyed the date as well,” Castiel says. “I was hoping there would be another but if not, I understand.”

Dean stares at him wordlessly.

“Just please tell me that I can remain your familiar.”

Dean opens his mouth. Closes it again. “You lied,” he finally says.

“I did,” Castiel admits. “But I wanted to go on this date with you and I was afraid that it wouldn’t happen if you knew the truth.”

Dean looks him over. “Did you lie about anything else?”

“No! I haven’t ever lied to a date like this before. If we continue our relationship in any way, I promise to be honest with you from now on.” Castiel cringes, reluctantly adding, “Of course, I understand if you can’t trust my word.”

Dean’s expression is closed off, impossible to read. “Guess I don’t have to call you, then.”

Castiel’s stomach drops. “I - I suppose not.”

“Summoning’s a lot more convenient, anyway.” Dean smiles and relief floods Castiel. “Cheaper, too. I don’t have a great data plan.”

“Dean, I - thank you.”

“You’ll stay on as my familiar, right?” Dean asks. He takes a step closer, and Castiel can feel the pull between them; it’s magic but it’s more than that. “I know some people have issues with mixing magic and romance, but I’m willing to try if you are.”

In response, Castiel pulls him in for another kiss.

Emerson felt like Schopenhauer, facing existentialism and digging in her own thoughts, craving realization or new ideas. Although, her brain worked in a fast pace even during the ungodly hours of the morning. After so many sleepless nights, there were no clues on what's a proper slumber under blankets and anchored by pillows, only flying and allowing her body to float around through dreams.

Tired of stiring between the sheets, she took a deep breathe, opening her blueish-greenish eyes, staring at the darkness consuming wholly the bedroom. When you cannot rest peacefully, nights and days seem to last long, long dusks and long dawns. The yellow mornings and purple evenings all feel the same, no longer being capable to differ them.

She couldn't pierce her eyes closed anyway.

Still feeling the queer comfort of being left sitting in the dark, Emerson got on her feet, hazy with tiredness, awake with one thousand thoughts cruising, synapses and explosions, lighting the darkness behind her eye globes. Brain producing more energy than the whole neighbourhood.

It's weird to imagine how much electricity a body can produce, but cannot spread. Humans are nothing but a storage of unused energy. We are atomic and Emerson knew it, she swore that if the room was quiet enough, she could feel atoms setting, blood rushing in her eardrums, result of the heart beating, pulsating the red and white globes through veins.

Standing up felt weird, anything a palm in front of her face couldn’t be seem. The darkness is terrifying once you’re no longer hiding yourself from everything outside. Once you feel obligated to navigate along it, reach the light switch and hope it will be there. Not being able to perceive a fly in front of you is scary, and Emerson knew it.

Instead of turning the lights on, Emerson decided to keep walking through darkness, listening to shadows speaking. Telling her secrets only daylight can keep, nighttime is a loud speaker, a tattletale. Corners whispers, but once you drown it all in black, then nothing else contain their incessant talking, babbling nonsense.

Emerson listened to them, not stopping their ranting.

Darkness, sleepless nights, tiresome afternoons, nothing could quite hurt her anymore.

Nothing but loneliness.

Maybe, all the rating could not bother Emerson, their voices fulfilled the silence, not leaving room for loneliness. A loneliness daylight couldn’t occupy, fill to the brim. Shadows are full of sounds, everything seems livid in darkness.

Why turn the lights on, when the gloominess hugged so tightly those who accept it?

However, in that specific night, Emerson felt lonely, even accompanied by her ghosts, loud thoughts and thuds of her feet hitting the cold ground.

Emerson felt numb by sleeplessness, but awake with jolts of thoughts. Finally reaching the kitchen, after an eternity of walking and exploring the darkness, she got to the door and, only then, turning on the lights, hissing with clarity, asking for apologies from the shadows who were abruptly shut down. She could no longer bear listening to them. She was going insane.

The fridge was opened and Emerson grabbed a box of milk, not worrying about pouring the content in a cup, drinking straight from it. Long sips, nurturing her body and slowly blowing away the fog.

A long day ahead. A long day back.

Sitting on a chair and reaching for her laptop, Emerson began remembering the past day.

A high school reunion. Almost 12 years passed and yet douchebags were douchebags, people still talked shit about each other, but now whilst rambling about their conquerings, children, jobs, travels, fulfilled dreams, and well, Emerson felt like just Emerson.

A gymnasium crowded with people on their 30s, old students, old friends whose destinies run apart. They were now gathering 12 years of news, 12 years of events and occurrences. Dyed hair, wigs and a lot of dieting shakes, adults swimming in debts and bills, yet proudly bragging and showing off their achievements.

Emerson decided to sip on her non-alcoholic fruit punch and observe, questioning all her life choices, mainly the moment where she accidentally accepted hanging out with venomous colleagues. She was sitting on the benches and taking a mental note on never accepting anything without thoroughly reading ever again, specifically if the e-mail has her school emblem and the option to turn down.

Staring at everyone, showing off their kids and apartments, Emerson thought about life.

In ten years she rented her own small place, kept a good long-distance relationship with a korean music producer, a stable job as a psychologist, yet all the bragging made her question: How much did I actually change?

Growing old felt easy, but growing old comfortably always bugged Emerson. Once she left high school, her dream was to evolve, grow out of her shell and be Karen Horney for the teenagers. Unfortunately life ain’t that easy and concluding university costed too much of her sanity, despite all the loneliness and issues, she managed to survive.

Leaving the High School meeting felt reliving. What a waste of precious time, getting around people she hated or barely knew. It drained all the energy from her body and once she arrived at home, let her flesh and bones carve their shape on her bed, hopeful and wishing for some rest. But her brain couldn’t shut off and get in R.E.M sleep, going through everything that happened during all those 12 years.

In a well filled with loneliness and gloominess, Emerson met Min Yoongi through internet.

After finishing high school and entering university, Emerson discovered a profound love for acoustic rap. Her roommate showed a song from Rap Monster and his lyrics about anxiety and fear of failure, some of them masterpieces and within weeks, the girl was dipping down on a spiral of acoustic songs, charged with unhuman levels of sentimentalism and words. Among the talented rappers, a certain small yet rageful guy named Min Yoongi, or Agust D, started playing on Youtube.

Agust D, stage name from a korean rapper who moved to United Kingdom when he was 14, wrote about depression crudely, getting rid of metaphors whenever the subject was himself, but showing off his writing skills and capacity of creating parallels between rap and philosophy. Emerson fell head over heels for him and commented on one of his videos with such passion, expressing how grateful she felt for finding out about his work.

What actually surprised her was his answer: his personal e-mail address, an emoticon winking and other of a phone. He asked for her phone number in a subtle way. Smooth.

Their bonding was instantaneous.

Although he lived in Northern Ireland, too far from Emerson, yet they worked their arses off in order to meet monthly.

Her dating aspect of life was amazing, a long-term relationship with someone compatible and comprehensible.

Why did she feel so incomplete and lonely after all?

Staring blankly at her laptop screen, suddenly her vision got wet and blurry. Tears streaming down her face, ruining the make-up she applied in order to look more mature. Black eye liner? Ruined. Concealer? Stained. Mascara? No longer existing. Everything running down and breaking the coat of foundation.

Emerson wanted to improve herself and wished upon a star everyday.

She had an amazing life, with a good job and a stable relationship. Yet her brain couldn’t see how amazing she was. No one half as strong and tough could go through hard times on her previous job, all the bullying and mental health struggles without letting the existential pain drop them to their knees.

Her insatisfaction seemed pointless, whenever she thought about rationally, but couldn’t control her brain. Could not hold the negative thoughts down.

Everyone on that goddamn high school reunion seemed to have improved, matured and grow out their childish pants. Changing and living their best life, regardless of bills and difficulties.

Yoongi always bragged about how great his girlfriend was and her co-workers constantly compliment her skills, her empathy.

How could she not understand it? How could she still feel so lonely despite everything surrounding her?

Why couldn’t she feel like evolving and changing?

Out of nowhere, the ghosts decided to pronounce themselves even without shadows to support their voices, asking her why she was crying, who did hurt her and saying the sweetest words, slowly helping and making everything seem to be less lonely.

After crying a river, she cleaned the last remaining tears. The clear, small and, before contaminated by rests of makeup, the black eyeliner corrupting the pureness of each drop, now clean and sheer, the most raw demonstration of innocent sadness.

Indignation.

Rage.

Frustrations.

Among so many changes, ups and downs.

Evolution, it’s not solely a synonym for improvement. Changing, this defines the human evolution. It frustrates. It hurts you. Changing is painful. Emerson felt so much pain whilst watching time flying by.

The teardrops, now transparent, candid like newborn soul, brought to this world within seconds.

In that moment, pure, crude, bare, stripped of luxe, all the past risks and struggles drowning in realization, oh in that moment, Emerson realized her growth. Her changing.

The ghost now had only one voice and the source from every word was placed in front of her: the laptop.

“Hey, love, are feeling better now?” - Yoongi asked through a video call, his gummy smile flashing and making Emerson grin.

She was changing, growing, improving and slowly accepting it.

People at the show realized this tiny barely-teenager in the back knew every word to every song and pulled me to the front, and there was no barrier between crowd and stage, so I got to lean on the stage and got smirked at by the guitarist. After the show I shook Hansi Kirsch’s hand and got my copy of Imaginations From The Other Side signed. Good times
