I've been thinking about it because I've seen some insightful posts cross my dash recently on related subjects, and I think one of the big sources of bad blood in this fandom stems from an inability to really agree on the fact that we are in the Hetalia fandom and not the Actual Literal Real Life Political Entities Called States/Countries fandom, no matter how much those characters may have their characterization and backstory inspired by aspects of the history and culture of Actual Literal Countries.
What I mean by this is that the expectations people have of how they and others should conceive of, react to, interact with, etc. Hetalia countries are all over the place because some people approach them as if they are characters inspired in some way by aforementioned political concepts and some people approach them as the actual country -- And to complicate this I think most people differ on who, when, where, and to what degree they do this and perhaps more importantly, the degree to which they think other people are or should be doing this.
In essence I think at least this specific issue comes down to an ability to see one's own favorite or least favorite characters or even OCs and know that, you know, this is my country-themed Boy that I am playing with and obviously I know they're not the same thing, yet struggling with the uncertainty of whether other people know that they aren't the same, and rather than saying "Well maybe they're just like me and their opinion and understanding of the Country is more nuanced and complex than their opinion of the Boy," sometimes/often then defaulting to the assumption that they don't have that separation.
And when we assume they don't have that separation, then it follows that there is a direct correlation between how they treat the Boy and how they feel about Actual Country, whether it is in the "i'll excuse the Bad Government and Bad History because I love the Boy" direction or the "I love the Boy because I excuse the Bad Government and Bad History" direction. It means that a difference in interpretation or minor historical inaccuracy suddenly becomes A Big Old Deal because instead of being wrong about a Fake Thing, they are now assumed to also be wrong about a Real Thing (and so probably lots of other real things too) and that is way more important.
And, alright, look, I won't even say that nobody is like that, because I know for a fact there are people with genuine bad opinions about characters who also have those genuine bad opinions about real countries and people from those countries, though I would argue that typically they're in the category of already having had bad opinions before Hetalia. (Those people also tend to be obvious in other ways.) And there are also definitely people who are wrong about history in minor ways who also happen to be wrong about history in big and important ways.
But people come to a fandom for different reasons, and they get different things out of their fandom experiences, and the assumption that we can tell how they feel or how much they know or care about a thing by simply looking at how they play with the characters and concluding there is a 1-to-1 correlation there is not, uh... It's definitely not nice, for one, but it's also not conducive to a welcoming or enjoyable community, and I'll go ahead and say that it's pretty arrogant, too, whether one means to be or not.
Giving people the benefit of the doubt, adjusting our expectations and assumptions, approaching other fans as people who have the same capability we have to differentiate between a Hetalia country character and an Actual Country, and above all presuming good faith unless/until given a reason to think otherwise, would go a long way towards making the fandom experience better, broadly and individually.

look. instagram and twitter and tiktok all have their issues but at least you can see who liked your post for free. these dating apps - which, for those of us who don't live in the city like myself, are used as ways of making queer friends in our area - want you to lock into a monthly subscription fee - of the amount you would pay to get a few drinks with these people you're trying to connect with - just to see who liked you're profile. the apps already feature multiple ad segments but they still charge you for basically functionality - and don't tell me it's for app maintenance or server costs or whatever bc this subscription hellscape of modern times came from folks realising they could turn their userbase into an endless cashcow instead of just being a one time purchase. i hate it. i hate the capitalist hold on interpersonal relationships. i hate queer people being isolated bc they're not willing or able to fork over considerable funds for features that should be included for free. this pride month i want to point out all the companies and apps that promote queer inclusion and celebration only bc they want our money. the HER app is one of those apps. no company truly cares about queer folk unless they offer support and connection without asking you to pay through the nose for the privilege.

Just finished House and omg the feels I have right now is surreal! I can only delusion myself into believe that House somehow found a way to keep Wilson alive and they both are happy. And 8 goddamn seasons and the fact it's over is just hitting while I write this so I'll probably drown myself in fanfics. And the last 3 episodes where they were basically confessing to each other! Like the if only the writers didn't end it exactly like that I would worship them. Honestly the fact is every writer is killing off people right and left and that is a whole other branch of therapy cause can you not! I am happy they mean so much to each other but I'll probably cry myself to sleep today so cheers to all the Hilson fans and House fans out there! 🥂

Of course, I will always be a diehard fan of the MacDonald Hall (Bruno & Boots) BOOKS, but I recently gave the movies a try. So this is a list of stuff that stuck out to me ig, although it could also be just as accurately titled "An essay on why this show is gay and Bruno/Boots is OTP."
(All of these are from Go Jump in the Pool, I haven't watched beyond that yet...)
"McDonald Hall without Bruno and Boots is like the North Pole without Santa and Ms.Claus." Bruno says and both turn to each other immediately and should "I'm Santa!" Both more bothered by who is the guy (which is interesting to me since Bruno in the same movie dresses up as George's AUNT) and not that Bruno just compared them to a married couple.
At the swim meet, moments after Boots has been kissed by Diane, he's looking into the stands and who does he make eye contact with? Not the girl who just kissed him and he (presumably) likes back, he looks at Bruno.
Bruno never doubts himself, never questions his plans, never spirals, until Boots tells him he'd be better off without him. And even though Boots immediately takes it back, the damage is done. And Bruno starts to spiral at the meet as Boots falls behind because he finally confronts the idea of losing Boots, really losing Boots for the first time and realized Bruno isn't better off without Boots, even if Boots might be better off without Bruno.
I forgot to actually write it down as I watched it but that moment where Boots is on the phone with his parents and finds out that he's staying and Bruno rushes out to tell him that !they got the pool! is adorable.
(I excluded all my "it was different in the book!!" notes, because this post would be way too long otherwise.)

Ooo, what's bring your fandom to work day?? 👀👀
Long and short is that Lambert is a rank and file member of the Kaedweni steelworkers union and has to go to a fancy campaign lunch in support of a local politician's bid for reelection. The union is endorsing the campaign and no one else would go.
Keira is a union lawyer also there under duress.
They end up sneaking out of the shindig and splitting a joint of Vesemir’s homegrown good weed, and getting each other's numbers (or fucking, I didn't quite get that far)
I literally started writing it on a napkin at a fancy campaign lunch I went to for work the other week because I was bored and thought the concept would be funny (also I may have been hoping the cute guy from the Laborers local would invite me outside for a joint). It was mostly an exercise in "hmmm what union trades would each Witcher be in?" I doubt I'll do anything more with it but it kept me entertained for a good four hours of stuffy speeches and cocktail shrimp lol.
“No” Lambert says, or rather whines.
Vesemir doesn’t even look up from where he’s trimming his plants, mouth set in concentration, a frown between his brows.
“Yes”
Lambert isn’t pouting because he doesn’t fucking pout but he does stick his lower lip out a bit and makes his best impression of a baby seal in Vesemir’s direction - violently and with intent.
“You’re going”
“They just want a tame rank and file to parade around” Lambert grouses “Why not send Letho? he’s much more impressive looking”
“Because Rennes knew no one would volunteer but that I could make you go”
“You can’t make me do shit”
Vesemir just pins him with a bored stare over the tops of his glasses as though to say try me.
Lambert lasts a solid fifteen seconds before he crumbles.
“Ugh. Fine”
“When leadership tells you to jump you say how high” Vesemir reminds him “Sometimes you gotta kiss a little ass”
“Seems like a pretty big ass to me” Lambert grumbles.
“Well” Vesemir says, making a considering noise and holding his hands an arm-span apart as though measuring the true width of the proverbial ass “At least there’ll be an open bar”

i feel like a lot of the 'i hate kids' crowd would be more tolerant if they understood that due to a kid's limited experience of the world that 4 hour flight might just be the longest they've ever had to sit still for or that trapped finger might literally be the most pain they've ever felt in their short life or they might not have ever seen a person with pink hair ever so of course they want to touch it or nobody's told them yet that they can't run around the museum and they only just learned cheetahs are the fastest animals so of course they want to put that to the test. how were they supposed to know etc etc.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
#yeehaw#1k#5k#10k#posts that got cursed. blasted. im making these tag updates after... 19 hours?#also i have been told it should say speech loss bc nonverbal specifically refers to the permanent state. did not know that!#unfortunately i fear it is so far past containment that even if i edited it now it would do very little. but noted for future reference#edit 2: nvm enough ppl have come to rb it from me directly that i changed the wording a bit. hopefully this makes sense#also. in case anyone is curious. though i doubt anyone who is commenting these things will check the original tags#1) my friend did not do this on purpose in any way. it was not intended to distract me or to hit on me. im a lesbian hes a gay man. cmon now#he felt very bad about it afterwards. i thought it was hilarious but it was very embarrassed and apologetic#2) “why didn't he use 🫵🏼?” didn't exist yet. “why didn't he use 🆗?” dunno! we'd been using a lot of hand emojis. 👌🏼 is an ok sign#like it makes sense. it was just a silly mixup. also No i did not invent 👉🏼👌🏼 as a gesture meaning sex. do you live under a rock#3) nonspeaking episodes are a recurring thing in my life and have been since i was born. this is not a quirky one-time thing#it is a pervasive issue that is very frustrating to both myself and the people i am trying to communicate with. in which trying to speak is#extremely distressing and causes very genuine anguish. this post is not me making light of it it's just a funny thing that happened once#it's no different than if i post about a funny thing that happened in conjunction w a physical disability. it's just me talking abt my life#i don't mind character tags tho. those can be entertaining. i don't know what any of you are talking about#Except the ppl who have said this is pego/ryu or wang/xian. those people i understand and respect#if you use it as a writing prompt that's fine but send it to me. i want to see it#aaaand i think that's it. everyday im tempted to turn off rbs on it. it hasn't even been a week

The older I get the more I admire people who are earnestly, genuinely into whatever their thing is. I know it sounds like an annoying cliche but unless you're being cruel or hurtful there is really no need to be normal about things. The dude with the bad fake accent at the renaissance faire is having the time of his life. The people having photoshoots with their fashion dolls are loving it. The old lady with a yard unreasonably full of tacky ass lawn ornaments is having a blast, HOA be damned.
Don't waste your time being too cool to have fun, y'know?

My solution for bloatware is this: by law you should hire in every programming team someone who is Like, A Guy who has a crappy laptop with 4GB and an integrated graphics card, no scratch that, 2 GB of RAM, and a rural internet connection. And every time someone in your team proposes to add shit like NPCs with visible pores or ray tracing or all the bloatware that Windows, Adobe, etc. are doing now, they have to come back and try your project in the Guy's laptop and answer to him. He is allowed to insult you and humilliate you if it doesn't work in his laptop, and you should by law apologize and optimize it for him. If you try to put any kind of DRM or permanent internet connection, he is legally allowed to shoot you.
With about 5 or 10 years of that, we will fix the world.
